Event brings community together for festive family fun

Sometimes, shopping without the kids is a must for parents, but Shelly Walker, mom of five-year-old twins, said the Holiday Open House is one shopping event that kids enjoy at least as much as their parents do. “We go to everything they do on Augusta Road, but John and Caroline Walker at definitely this one,” said Walker, who lives just off Augusta. last year’s Holiday Open House “My kids love it.” The Walker children, John and Caroline, have attended every year since they were babies, and now they are old enough to take in all of the sights, sounds and tastes that make the holidays special. Their favorite activity? No surprise here - it’s at Phil Hyman Photography, where Santa Claus himself is on hand to read a special holiday story. “It’s a great early chance to visit Santa,” Walker said. “It gets them excited about the holidays.” This year, Santa will be at Phil Hyman Photography at 1:30, and kids who visit The Grey Goose afterward will receive a ticket for a free Chocolate Moose cupcake. Santa will also be visiting Capers Place and Augusta Commons, so this is a great chance to meet the man in red. John and Caroline are also big fans of the face painting and balloons. “That’s at the top of their list,” Walker said. Walker appreciates that the event helps get kids into the spirit of giving, not just receiving, by collecting donations that will be distributed to Meals on Wheels and The Samaritan House. The kids are also able to select special gifts for family and friends, at a discount, while their parents support local, independent businesses. “Last year, they picked out gifts for each other, and they were so excited,” she said. “The stores really make it easy for parents to bring their kids, and that’s important.” More than anything, it’s the social aspect that brings families like the Walkers back year after year. “It’s the sense of community,” she said. “You see your friends, and you see your friends’ children. Everyone has hectic schedules, so it can be hard to connect. It’s a great way to see people and connect with people you haven’t seen in a while. “To be able to experience a festive event with the kids, and also to be able to shop it’s really a treat.”

arba Gives back

Members gather to help two local charities

Members of the Augusta Road Business Association started off the season in the spirit of giving by covering a shift on the kitchen line at Meals on Wheels on Nov. 19. The group also organized and loaded emergency shelf kits, which include nutritious, shelf-stable foods that clients can have on hand for emergencies. Meals on Wheels is a nonprofit organization that prepares and delivers hot meals to homebound residents who don’t have the means or support to prepare daily meals. Helping out each November has become an annual tradition for ARBA members. This day of service is just one way the organization works to help nonprofit organizations located within the Augusta Road Business District. Another favorite cause is The Samaritan House, a ministry of five churches and other groups that work together to collect and distribute food and clothing to those in need.

Director Gerry Barlik suggests potential donors visit www.thesamartanhous.org to learn more about the organization and to see what food donations are needed most. The group’s basic food bag distributed to those in need includes canned goods such as tuna, soup, fruit, beans and peas. This December, ARBA members are gathering a group of members, employees and friends to shop for Samaritan House and hope to make a large delivery to this charitable group, which currently spends about $1,000 per week assisting clients. If you’d like to help these worthwhile organizations, ARBA is offering a simple way to get involved at Holiday Open House. At the checkout area of every participating shop, simply drop your change - or any donation - in the boxes and help make a difference this holiday season.

2014 Participants:

Lights on Augusta spotlights local businesses

Augusta Road is more than just a shopping destination - it’s a community. That’s more evident than ever at Lights on Augusta, now in its fourth year and sponsored by Talk Magazine. Just as neighborhoods throughout the Upstate start decorating their homes for the season, businesses on Augusta Road participate in this community tradition by decorating their building or storefront with colorful lights, wreaths, poinsettias and all of the other hallmarks of the season. The contest encourages camaraderie and friendly competition among area businesses, and the best part - customers have the final say. Customers and visitors to the shops can go online at onlyonagusta. com to vote for their favorite display. Voting begins on Dec. 1 and continues through Dec. 31. The reigning champion for two years running is Phil Hyman Photography, and

Becky Hyman said the team is already gearing up to decorate again this year. “We’re focusing on Holiday Open House first, but after that, we’ll decorate. I don’t know the theme yet, but we have a competitive flair here so we’ll come up with something.” Last year, the Hymans purchased a leg lamp just like the one in A Christmas Story, and had fun posting photos and videos on social media. “Our clients and friends get a kick out of it, and they keep voting for us,” Hyman said. “We have the tackiest lights, but it caused a lot of buzz, so it’s fun.” For business owners, it’s a great way to increase exposure by

encouraging customers to vote. And for customers shopping in this unique area, the participating businesses create a scene along this historic road that is magical - or, as the Hyman’s showed last year, humorously festive. “We hope a lot of businesses compete this year,” Hyman said. “That just makes it better.”
