This activewear powerhouse—spun from simple beginnings as a T-shirt manufacturer—sells 2.8 million garments a week under a variety of playfully named brands: Soffe, The Cotton Exchange, Junk Food, The Game, Fun Tees, Intensity, Realtree Outfitters and Salt Life.

Until recently, Delta’s Greenville presence was relatively unknown beyond local board members and professional representation—but that is changing quickly as the company makes itself more visible within the community. A street-level lobby in Delta’s headquarters now features a corporate brands wall and showcases sample apparel to Main Street passersby.

For six years running, Delta Apparel has been awarded exclusive rights for all apparel and accessories sold at the Kentucky Derby.

Welcome to the Community Journals’ ninth annual “Behind The Counter.” I have to admit this is one of my favorite projects. This publication began as a way to show you successful local businesses and the people behind them. It’s always fun to peek behind-thescenes and learn who, how and why. Many businesses have revealed themselves as never before, making this a fun publication that you will enjoy perusing as much as we enjoyed putting it together. People like to buy from people, and the Upstate is rich with local entrepreneurs and leaders who bring so much to our community. “Behind The Counter” is an important part of our “Shop Local” awareness campaign. It is more important than ever to support local businesses to ensure our community’s economic growth. As a community publication, we always strive to promote the importance of local business investment. Shopping local and trading with local businesses keeps the Upstate strong. Thanks to the response from our readers, this promotion has been a huge hit and continues to be the talk of the town. Our commitment to the awareness campaign is what led to the creation of “Behind The Counter.”

“Our focus is on creating the most positive outcome imaginable,” says Sean McEnroe, CEO of Proaxis Therapy. “Our formula is simple. Fill our clinics

with compassionate and talented people and the rest will take care of itself.” Apparently this formula is working for the Upstate. What started with just two employees and one clinic in 2004 has now grown to over 120 employees and 13 clinics throughout Greenville, Spartanburg, Pickens and Anderson counties.

Proaxis Therapy, in collaboration with the Steadman Hawkins Clinic, is currently working with the National Football League and Major League Baseball on injury prevention for quarterbacks and pitchers.

We’re all Works of Art

Since 1973 the Metropolitan Arts Council (MAC) has preserved and expanded the cultural arts of Greenville. In 2010, MAC had its best year ever with total income surpassing $1 million, representing a 33.3% increase over income raised in 2009. The organization also granted a record high of $306,154 to area artists, arts organizations and arts education programs throughout Greenville County. Greenville Open Studios 2010 had a record high of 142 participating artists with record high attendance and sales of 63,070 and $233,941. SmartARTS, MAC’s arts-integration partnership with the Greenville County Schools, has a record high of 33 participating schools in Greenville County for the 2010-2011 year. Since federal funding expired in 2007, MAC has raised over $500,000 to continue and expand the program. 2010 also heralded a wonderful artsintegration collaboration with the Peace Center for the Performing Arts. $14,000 was added to the MAC grants endowment in 2010. With a total of $25,500 in the endowment fund, 5% of unrestricted income will be added on an annual basis for the next three years prior to launching an endowment campaign.

ine years ago, Bryan and Rebecca Feldman were living as newlyweds in Atlanta when he asked her to make a big move. He wanted to buy Greenville’s Two Men and a Truck franchise, and he wanted Rebecca to be his business partner. That move has proven to be a good one, as this business has continued to grow and is now considered one of the most reputable professional movers in the Upstate. The two are still actively at the helm of the local Two Men and a Truck franchise, taking a load off local families during one of life’s most stressful events. With 10 trucks and a dedicated staff, they’ll do anything from rearranging furniture to

relocating entire households – whether across town or across the country. In addition to running a business together and raising two children five and under, Bryan and Rebecca are both very involved in the community and are dedicated to helping with local charities. Rebecca is serving as the Chair this year of the Children’s Museum’s Chocolate Soiree and is actively involved in the Junior League, her church, and their children’s schools.

espite numerous offers, Mark Alexander can’t bring himself to sell the utility trailer his wife, Wanda, sold him the day they met. It’s a symbol of their harmonious hitching of home and workplace. Today, the Alexanders own and operate TNJ Trailers, the business founded by Wanda’s family more than two decades ago. The couple, happily married for four years, shares the work load. While Wanda handles sales, Mark manages the service department. At various times, they’ve been assisted by their Brady Bunch-style family of five children from previous marriages.

Together, they oversee the Upstate’s preferred dealership for commercial, residential and recreational trailers. TNJ’s large inventory includes trailers for virtually every hauling need—enclosed, utility, heavy equipment, dump, aluminum and motorcycle. s different as night and day? More like two sides of the same coin.

In their 17 years together, Paige and Robbie Haney have spent untold hours on their mutual passion – homes. The adventure began when Robbie, who was working as an electrical contractor, acquired his S.C. Residential Builders License so he could build a home from start to finish. He enlisted Paige to head up the interior design, from paint colors to fine appointments and finishing touches.

2005. Not long after, Robbie joined the Prudential team, and has been able to put his construction knowledge to good use, assisting a recent client who bought an unfinished home. “That’s where he can really shine,” says Paige. The Haneys live and breathe homes. When time permits, they still enjoy Sunday afternoon drives looking at houses. “Our literature is house plan books,” Paige says with a laugh. “Besides the people in your life, your home is everything.”

In 1933 Francis Odom and his brother-in-law, Harold Trammel, started a sandwich shop and soda fountain in downtown Greenville. It was located on Augusta Road where the Warehouse Theatre now sits, and was a popular stop for milkshakes, cherry Cokes, and conversation.

In 1941, the shop briefly closed its doors when its owners were drafted to World War II, but in 1947 the Pickwick reopened in its current location at the other end of Augusta Road. In addition to a soda fountain, Francis and his new co-owner, his brother Edgar, added a drive-in restaurant and a pharmacy. Forty-five years later, the Pickwick is still going strong, and it’s still run by Odom brothers – Edgar’s grandsons Kelly and Chad. A 2007 update brought back the popular soda fountain, which had closed in 1964, and the Pickwick is once again the place to pick up your prescription, have a hot dog and an ice cream cone, choose a unique Greenville-themed gift and chat with your neighbors. “We consider our customers our extended family,” says Kelly. “We can offer that personal attention and know our customer’s medical history.” Customers are often surprised to find that the independent Pickwick can also beat the chains when it comes to price. Unique gifts, friendly staff, competitive prices, and delicious food that takes customers back to another time – it’s no wonder that people who grew up saying “Meet me at the Pickwick,” are now dropping by with their children and grandchildren.

Smith’s 10 years of experience with the SC Department of Commerce played no small part in his ability to broker a favorable deal and employ more Upstate workers. A small staff—supplemented by many a big-hearted volunteer—operates Greenville’s Ronald McDonald House. Here in “the house that love built,” they’re carrying on a legacy of hope, a lightening of the load when a parent’s heart is made heavy by fear, uncertainty or doubt. More than temporary housing for families with hospitalized children, Ronald McDonald House is a refuge, a safe haven. “We are a home away from home,” says Chief Development Officer Marti Spencer. “We help parents withstand the strain of a child’s medical crisis.”

The Grove Road facility hosted over 800 families in 2010—more than 4,000 overnight stays. Demand increases in tandem with the Upstate’s growing reputation for exceptional pediatric care; expansion plans are underway to add a dozen suites to the 10,000-square-foot House, which currently comprises 12 bedrooms with private baths, a living room, dining room, playroom, double kitchen and laundry facilities as well as an outdoor patio and playground. Funding is provided by corporate, civic and individual donations; McDonald’s owner/operators; and a variety of local fundraising events. “This is a place of hope,” Marti says.

Local McDonald’s owner/operator Frank Landgraff spearheaded the effort to open Greenville’s Ronald McDonald House in 1989.

olling Green Village, a 175-acre continuing care community, is celebrating its 25th anniversary with pride in its success as a senior living community and excited about new growth. Eric Dudasko, Executive Director since July 2010, has immersed himself in taking Rolling Green Village to the next level. “My goal is to build on the 25 years of excellence and make it even more spectacular,” he says.

And as fate would have it, Caroline credits her business success to the leadership training she received in, yes, the Junior League, of which she is a proud sustaining member. What began as a hobby eventually morphed into a business. Golf Cart Outfitters now shares a storefront with ATV Outfitters— reuniting Todd and Matthew.

Golf Cart Outfitters also specializes in servicing, accessorizing and customizing carts. Customers can choose from a variety of lift kits, stereos, wheels, tires, lights and paint jobs. He can even add a back seat and customize carts for yard work or hunting.

atthew Bell and Todd Harrison share the same “twisted sense of humor” but it was sharing a common pastime that the longtime buddies parlayed into a commercial success. Today, ATV Outfitters is in its 10th year of selling allterrain vehicle parts and accessories across the Upstate-and around the world. It all began when Todd introduced Matthew to ATVs, the three- and four-wheelers that take on all terrains, especially mud and mountains. They’ve since traveled around the country in pursuit of the off-road induced adrenaline rush and freedom to explore places a car can’t reach.

With its emphasis on adventure and companionship, the sport is revving up. Eighty-five percent of Matthew’s business is online, with much of it from outside the U.S. In addition to selling discount parts, accessories and apparel, his shop services and customizes ATVs with wheels, racks, winches and more. Many of his customers come through referrals thanks to his reputation for straightforward honesty. lizabeth Garrison started out in 2007, picking up cardboard boxes and plastic jugs at Coffee Underground and taking them to be recycled. Just a few years later, her company has carved out a niche as a premier commercial recycling company, able to handle everything from a small bag of material to tractor trailer loads. From small businesses to large manufacturers, EverGreen picks up paper, cardboard, aluminum, plastic, glass and even electronics, light bulbs and batteries from across the Upstate. “Most people have great intentions to recycle, but it’s not always easy,” she says. “We make it easy and they know they are doing

the right thing.” She also offers recycling and wastemanagement consulting, designing programs to make recycling even simpler. Growing up on a farm in Anderson, Elizabeth always had an interest in sustainability. She appreciates that in addition to keeping materials out of landfills, she is also creating revenue and jobs by keeping valuable material in use. “It’s good for the environment and the economy,” she says. When she isn’t expanding her business, Elizabeth is a community volunteer and member of Downtown Rotary, the Junior League, and Westminster Presbyterian Church.

She is celebrating two anniversaries this year – the 80th year in business for Merle Norman, and the 75th anniversary of the Miss South Carolina Pageant. As a new executive director for the Miss Fountain Inn and Miss Golden Strip pageants, Janice is excited to encourage young women to become involved in America’s number one scholarship program, and to wear cosmetics manufactured in the USA onstage and off.

ourishment is about so much more than food.

“When you’re isolated, you hunger for a friendly face,” says Barbara Taggart, one of the 1,350 homebound seniors throughout Greenville County who enjoy a hot, nutritious lunch every weekday from Meals on Wheels. Barbara enjoys the tasty variety of home-delivered meals— prepared according to her nutritional needs—but even more, she appreciates the daily visit from a volunteer she’s grown to know and love. Because along with lunch comes a sense of security, the reassurance that someone is stopping by each day and can, if needed, initiate arrangements for other community-based services. “It’s just been wonderful,” Barbara says.

Founded in 1968, Meals on Wheels operates with 2,500 dedicated volunteers, including 110 corporate program members, who do everything from answering phones to prepping food to driving one of the 117 delivery routes. Some volunteer every day, others weekly or monthly, as their schedule allows. Meals on Wheels is supported exclusively through corporate and private donations, and raises funds through annual signature events such as the Sweetheart Charity Ball, Wheels for Meals, Par Tee and MOW Fall Classic. Generous donors, even during tough times, allow Meals on Wheels to provide services to all clients completely free of charge.

Meals on Wheels relies on 140 volunteers every day to carry out its programmatic mission.

Their edgy, sophisticated store, Evolve Male, is specifically aimed to expose men to designer fashions and unique looks unavailable at large retailers. Designer denims, button-up shirts that can go formal or casual, T-shirts, hats – including fedoras – and one-of-a-kind cuff bracelets comprise the stock of forward-leaning fashion at Evolve Male. “Men need help here,” says Kelly, who has an apparel merchandising background. “We offer our customers one-on-one assistance, and make sure the clothes are fitted properly.” Kelly, who customizes clothing for

The couple plans to add a women’s line in the same edgy style in late spring. “We want to appeal to the many female customers who shop for men,” says Geoff, who adds that their main focus remains on men’s fashion. Married with a six-year-old son, Kellen, and a 100-lb. German Shepherd, Bella, the couple enjoys learning new skills through their work together. In fact, Geoff learned the computer codes to design the shop’s online shopping site.

Three of our staff members know firsthand about dealing with physical handicaps. Phillip Peters, owner of Advanced Prosthetics, lost his right leg when he was only 15 years old following a football injury. Technician Joey Birch was 38 when he had a motorcycle accident and lost his left leg. Brian Steele, another staff technician, lost part of his hand at 18 after a machining accident at work. They all live very active, fulfilling lives and enjoy helping other amputees do the same. It really is more than a job—it’s personal.
