DELTA APPAREL, INC.

Deb Merrill (CFO) & Justin Grow (General Counsel/Corp. Secretary) Deb: Inquisitive, self-motivated professional, energetic Justin: Northern Florida native & happy Upstate convert What is the most rewarding experience you have ever had? Deb: As CFO of a fast-paced, growing company, my most rewarding experience has been being on the ground floor and playing an integral part in seven acquisitions. There is nothing more satisfying than learning about a new business, understanding its needs, determining the synergies that can be achieved, finding a “win-win” acquisition structure, and closing the deal. Of course, the work does not stop there, but instead just begins. However, the satisfaction that comes with seeing the success of the acquisition makes it all worth it. What is your favorite childhood memory? Justin: I grew up near the Gulf Coast of Florida so my favorite childhood memory has to be going to the beach, fishing and just generally living the “Salt Life”® with family and friends. What advice would you give a young person just starting out in business? Deb: To all aspiring young people, I would tell them to take control of their careers, to take chances, and to go after their goals. Take every day to learn and be diligent in keeping your skill sets aligned with the demands of your career goals. Be curious. Be courageous. Be ethical. Where would you like to be in 5 years? 10 years? Justin: I love what I do, who I work with and where I live so I’d like to think I’ll still be the General Counsel at Delta Apparel 5 to 10 years from now. However, I’m an inveterate sports nut, so if Michael Jordan called to offer me a coaching job with the Charlotte Bobcats or the Atlanta Braves called about a management position, I’d tell my agent to at least take their calls and possibly give it serious consideration if they’d let me commute from Greenville!

How is your business different from your competition? As we have grown from a small commodity T-shirt manufacturer to a publicly-traded, branded apparel company (NYSE MKT: DLA) with approximately $500 million in annual sales, we have maintained our roots in the Carolinas as a U.S. apparel company. Different from our competitors, we still offer apparel products that are 100% made in the USA – from cotton to decorated garments. No matter which college team you root for – go get your “American Threads by The Game” ® apparel products in stores this fall!

VILLAGE AT PELHAM Tony Kouskolekas, President of Village Hospital

Community, quality, innovative, caring, cutting edge, unique What does your company do best?

What is your pet peeve?

We provide high quality, compassionate healthcare in a community setting. Village Hospital strives to be the very best, serve this community and be a good neighbor. Our emergency department has fast become the place where our neighbors and patients know and trust they are going to receive quality care in the Greer and Greenville areas, no matter what time it is. Our staff is second to none, and that is demonstrated by our high patient satisfaction scores.

One pet peeve of mine is people who blame others for their own negative circumstances. The other is the idea that everything should be easy. Life can be hard and when it is, we might just need to work a little harder to achieve success. We all need to take the responsibility for our successes as well as our failures.

What is the most rewarding experience you have ever had?

I want to be at Village Hospital, Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System and in the Upstate and watch it grow. I look forward to the opening of Gibbs Cancer Center/Pelham to serve the needs of residents who want and need their outpatient cancer care near home. This is a wonderful place and I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve here.

Being able to help people with their healthcare needs. As an administrator, I am not a direct caregiver but consider it a blessing and honor to help people in the community if they have a need. Village Hospital is a community hospital. That means we take care of our home community, offering the services they need by people—direct caregivers—they know and trust.

Where would you like to be in 5 years? 10 years?

What advice would you give a young person just starting out in business? I would advise young people just starting out to work hard; understand that every work opportunity they have affords learning that will be useful throughout their career. I would also tell them to follow their dreams and not let circumstances keep them from realizing what it is they really want to do in life.

MASSAGE ENVY GREENVILLE

Caroline and Don Taylor Caroline: Always trying to fit one more thing in and “completely" catch up! Don: Always looking for the next dream to achieve What is your favorite thing about the Upstate?

What advice would you give a young person just starting out in business?

Don: I love the weather, which allows me lots of great days to be outside!

Caroline: First, spend a lot of time learning everything you can. Make connections that can help you then try to help those people, too. Commit to a standard of excellence and make sure that those around you know you expect the same from them. Recognize that you WILL make mistakes with staff and customers … own up to them right away and people generally will give you the opportunity to make it right. Keep some balance in your life, no matter what.

Caroline: I love the location … being close to the mountains, lakes, beach, and my beloved Clemson University. I love the weather, especially having all four seasons. Our beautiful downtown area is amazing and as a whole, our diverse community continues to strive and get better and better. I am proud to be from the Upstate.

What is the most rewarding experience you have ever had? Caroline: As as a member of the Junior League I participated in a week of hands on rebuilding with volunteers from around the country in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina – an experience I will never forget. Physically and emotionally exhausting, but exhilarating to see a group come together with great planning to accomplish so much in such a short time. To see the appreciation and feel the rewarding embrace of the residents who worked alongside us made the sore muscles worth it!

What is the best advice you have ever received? Don: Success is the result of focusing on the success of everyone around you. Caroline: My grandfather told me, at the beginning of my marriage, one secret of his 56-year happy marriage to my grandmother. “Both spouses must feel like they are giving more than 50%: giving in, compromising … and if both are giving more than 50% then it will work out!” Being married almost 25 years, I agree with that … but I believe it also takes a little luck

What was your first job? Don: In middle school I got a job as a paperboy in Fargo, North Dakota. Caroline: A gift wrapper during holiday season at Rey’s Jewelers downtown on Main Street. I loved the excitement of the holiday shoppers and the thrill of making them happy by giving them that extra little thing – the perfect wrapping on their gift. That job taught me the value of making someone happy.

Why should people do business with you? Massage Envy Spas are focused on skin and body health and wellness, rather than beautification. We focus on informing and educating our clients on regular skin care and how to make it work for the long term rather than as an occasional treat. We provide a pathway to wellness, well-being, and worth, through professional, convenient and affordable massage therapy and spa services. We think that we provide the best facials and massage therapy services you can get at the right price.

What was your “ah-ha” moment?

Photography by carol boone stewart

Don: Reading an article about Massage Envy in Entrepreneur Magazine in 2007.

BTC2013_LAYOUT REV.indd 5

Caroline: That moment, when I realized that Don and I actually would be great at working together in a business and we made a good team with the same things that work well in our marriage. We “complement” each other and have different strengths and weaknesses; this helps us in our business venture and now I am having fun with my best friend (most of the time)!

DESIGN ON TAP

Jay Kimbel, Manager; Danielle White (left) & Barbara Dendy (right), Sales Associates

An elegant, creative reflection of your personal style What is the best gift you have ever received?

How did you get your start?

Jay: My daughter Breely Jane. Being a father to her and Kerns, her brother, has taught me so much about myself. I am forever grateful to be their father!

Barbara: I am a NKBA certified Interior Designer. I came to Greenville five months ago to be closer to NC, which is my home.

Barbara: A hand-colored picture of flowers on Valentine’s Day from my boyfriend with a note saying, “I wanted to give you flowers but couldn’t afford to buy them. They’re tulips, your favorite.”

Danielle: I walked into Cregger Company to select plumbing fixtures for my home and walked out with a job. After eight years in software sales, I am back with a vengeance!

Danielle: I receive the best gift every day—the love and support of my husband, Billy, and my children, Hannah Claire and Chet.

What is your “ah-ha” moment? Jay: Realizing that life is really 10% circumstances and 90% how you react to those circumstances. Barbara: The day my moving van unloaded in Savannah, where I had always wanted to live. My first evening, I was on my porch watching the moss blow in the trees, and I realized … the South is home! Danielle: I cannot worry about what tomorrow holds. If I focus on today and making the most of it, tomorrow will take care of itself.

Jay: I worked in a family plumbing business after college, and got the opportunity to manage the Cregger Company warehouse. Now I oversee their operations in the Upstate.

What advice would you give a young person just starting out in business? Danielle: Follow your passion and your heart. While you have to earn a living, be sure that you love what you do and where you spend your day. Jay: Work hard, do what you say you are going to do and try to add value to other people’s lives. Barbara: Be true to yourself, and deliver what you promise. Treat everyone with respect, and remember that they, too, have a story.

How is your business different from your competition? Design on Tap is different because we provide personal, courteous, and professional service to all of our customers. Whether you need a single faucet or full home design, we are here. Budget, size, or design will never be a reflection of the superior service our clients will receive. 6

GREYSTONE ANTIQUES & RESTORATION Trey Sherman, Owner A tradition of excellence - dedicated to service What does home mean to you?

What would I be surprised to learn about you?

Home to me is wherever I am with my wife, Natalie, and our 8-year-old twins, Olivia and Greyson. We all love to travel and especially enjoy camping in our Airstream. Whether we are at the beach or the mountains, in France or one of the National Parks, we are home as long as we are all together. Home is family … and family is home!

I think you would be surprised to know that I raise, ride and train saddle mules. After earning a degree from Furman University, I was torn between becoming a veterinarian and going into the family business. I had a passion for both. Fortunately, I have a hobby where I can work with animals.

What advice would you give a young person just starting out in business? The best advice I can give to the younger generation is to work hard and always do the best job you can do, regardless of what it is. Do your homework and find out if you can run a successful business doing what you love. I am very fortunate to have been able to make a living doing what I love, but I still have had to work hard to learn all I could to get where I am today. You can be successful through hard work and dedication.

What does your company do best? Our strongest attribute is our knowledge. We know every angle of the restoration process, when to do something and when not to. We share this knowledge every day, through advice we give our clients and in the quality work we do for them. Our approach to each job is unique. We offer quality craftsmanship that will satisfy the most discerning customers at a price they can afford.

What is the best part of owning your own business?

Photography by carol boone stewart

Although I’ve only been in this saddle as a career for 26 years, I was born into this business. I have been in a workshop since I was 5 years old. I’ve seen many come and go in this business and what I believe makes the difference is to “be” what you do. My name and reputation are as sacred to me as the desires of my customers.

ROOTS

Wesley Turner, Owner A creative entrepreneur who’s ready for a challenge What is the best advice you have ever received? I have received a ton of great advice. Sometimes I listen and sometimes I wish I would have listened. I would have to say one of the best pieces of advice that I have received is, “You’ll be happier in life if you go for it and fail, rather than regretting that you never went for it at all. If you fail you will move on. If you never try you will always be wishing you had.”

What is the bravest thing you’ve ever done? Until this year the bravest thing I had ever done was to open my own store in 2009, during a not-so-great economy. I decided to take the leap and hoped the Upstate would appreciate the products and value I had to offer. Fortunately it is the best thing I could have ever done. Today, I have to say, I believe opening 4Rooms in March 2013 is the next bravest thing I’ve ever done.

What advice would you give a young person just starting out in business? My advice to a young business owner would be, unless you are willing to live and breathe your business, you should not start your own business. I work 24/7 for my business and I LOVE IT! You have to be brave, take chances, and always keep your business in mind. Everyone has an opinion on how things should be done. You just have to go with your gut and do what you think is right. If you can do this, you will never regret it!

What is the best part of owning your own business? One of the best things about owning my own business is that my business is seasonal and always changing. Just about the time I get tired of the current season, the next one comes along, with new products which inspire me to create new things! Another great part of owning my own business is how rewarding it is to see our customers leave happy and to know that our hard work has brightened their day. At Roots, we specialize in living arrangements. Our container planting and design service for indoors and out is what keeps us very busy. Our customers are welcome to use a container that they already own or we can help them select one from our collection. Other than our container planting, we offer a great selection of Home/Garden Accents, Plants, and Gifts. Our Outdoor Garden Department is paradise in spring with all of the blooming plants. We think we do a great job and we hope our customers do, too!

ROLLING GREEN VILLAGE Offering a healthier, happier lifestyle What does home mean to you?

What is your company’s mission statement?

Home is where you hang your heart. Rolling Green Village, with its 175 acres including lakes and walking trails, is “home” to around 500 active seniors who recognize that they are not defined by the house they live in but rather the home they have created in this continuing care retirement lifestyle.

The vision statement of Rolling Green Village is to create a village where remarkable service creates exceptional living. Rolling Green Village, the retirement community of choice in the Carolinas, provides the highest quality services and amenities in a secure, caring, Christian environment promoting health, wellness, and independence.

What have you done for the community that you are most proud of?

What is your favorite thing about the Upstate?

Rolling Green Village provides Greenville with the best retirement living options at a value price. The history of Rolling Green Village was born in the gracious donation by Hoke and Mildred Smith of 175 acres to build a continuing care community. Today, residents and employees carry on that generous spirit by actively raising money for local charities such as Alzheimer’s Association, Meals on Wheels, Gideon Bibles, Julie Valentine Center, Child’s Haven, Blood Connection, Gracious Hands Open Hearts, United Ministries, and many more.

Greenville is such a wonderful, eclectic community. Whether you are into the arts, outdoor adventures, education, dining, or staying at home, you have such wonderful choices and opportunities living in Greenville. Please call today to schedule a visit, so you can see for yourself, how much fun retirement living can be!

What was your “ah-ha” moment? When you are at Rolling Green, you meet such interesting, energetic, giving, smart, funny residents, and you realize that “age” is just a number and that the residents have made an “art” of living. As you can see in the photo, our staff and our residents enjoy life and love to have fun … what better way to spend your senior years?

KITCHEN ARTS & POTTERY Liz Bardsley, Owner

Caring, creative, outgoing, loyal, neighborly, Italian-Irish, silly, dependable. What is your favorite childhood memory? My favorite childhood memory was going to Delmonico’s Restaurant in NYC. My brothers had to wear restaurant issued ties that were not very attractive. I remember my astonishment at and absolute love of the dessert table, which featured a giant crystal punchbowl filled with strawberries in Champagne. I stood in front of that big bowl until my Mom came and got me and forced me to sit back down at the table.

What have you done for the community that you are most proud of? I am most proud that I put aside personal fear of failure and opened a thriving gourmet gift shop. I felt that our community, state, and country needed people who were able to open businesses and help create jobs and tax revenue. My store is comfortable and welcoming to everyone.

What advice would you give a young person just starting out in business? My father used to put everything into perspective by saying, “How many espressos, muffins, and ‘whatevers’ do you have to sell to pay your rent?” Think about a balanced product mix to satisfy a good amount of customers but don’t try to please everyone. I still struggle a bit finding that “pain threshold” for foodstuffs and gifts to pay rent and make customers happy.

How has the Upstate helped you? The Upstate has some of the most loyal customers available. People tell me years later how much they enjoyed my cooking at Seven Oaks, Restaurant la Boheme and Northampton Wines. That kind of connection makes opening a business less scary since I am hopeful that all those people want to help me succeed. If I succeed, our community succeeds.

Why should people do business with you? I think any customer who walks into my store immediately knows that I am here to help. Hospitality is in my blood and I love having a specialty tea or coffee available to offer. I really do care that my customers buy exactly what they need. And if it is a gift, I want someone to see my store’s label and get all excited without even knowing what is in the bag or box! It makes me happy to make others happy.

HYATT REGENCY GREENVILLE Gary Cohen, General Manager

Caring, friendly, focused, loyal, detail oriented, customer driven What is your favorite thing about the Upstate?

What is the legacy you would like to leave behind?

We worked for five years to get back to Greenville because it’s such a special place. The people are friendly and hospitable. The mountains and lakes are beautiful, downtown is vibrant, and we have the Clemson Tigers! The business community is dynamic and progressive – all working together to make Greenville the best place it can be to live and to work.

That my wife, sons and extended family know that I loved them and always wanted the best for them. That the people I worked with knew that I only wanted to see them grow and prosper … and the best part of my work day was spending time with them. Finally, that my employer knew I was loyal and dedicated and always appreciated the chance I had been given to be part of such a dynamic group of people.

What was your first job, and how did you get it? I realized at 13 if I wanted a car I needed to work. My grandfather owned a scrap metal business and he let me work for him on Saturdays, holidays and summers, making $20 per day. We worked in many types of factories separating stainless and other types of metal, loading the truck and taking it to a scrap metal yard. The truck was weighed, and then we off-loaded the scrap metal. It was a very dirty and dangerous job, but I learned a lot.

Why should people do business with you? The Hyatt was just renovated—we essentially have a new hotel. We are state-of-the-art and have a great new look. We can accommodate any guest’s needs, but the best part is our employees. We have the best employees in South Carolina who go through extensive training by our professional team of managers. The staff truly cares about our guests, and is always mindful of creating positive guest memories while working hard to sustain the Hyatt Regency legacy in Greenville.

The hospitality industry requires multifaceted individuals. Remember you cannot do it alone, therefore take excellent care of your employees, so they can then take care of your customers. Never expect what you don’t inspect. We are in the people business. Treat everyone with joy and respect and as if they were the most important thing in your life – because they are. Be patient, do the best you can in the position you are in and promotions will be automatic.

What advice would you give a young person just starting out in business?

T·N·J TRAILERS, INC. Wanda & Mark Alexander, Owners

We are here for the long HAUL!!! What is the best advice you have ever received?

What was your “ah-ha” moment?

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. And that is why it is called The PRESENT! So many times we try to live in the future, which causes us to feel anxious, or we live in the past and feel depressed. After several dramatic life-changing events, we finally learned to live in God’s PRESENT, where we can live in peace. We both cherish each and every day that God has given us.

In early 2009, after the financial crisis, TNJ was struggling. It was a scary time. Our only option was to release it and put it in God’s hands. We decided to stop listening to the news and when anyone asked “How is business?” our answer was, “Good, God has it under control.” We cut expenses, worked longer hours and I am proud to say that thanks to our Lord and Savior, 2012 was the best year ever for TNJ Trailers.

What does home mean to you?

Why should people do business with you?

Home is love, peace, faith, dreams, laughter, respect and second chances. Home is warm and comfortable. Home is not a house, it is the people in your life that support and love you. Our home is blessed by God’s Grace. Our children are now grown, but we want them to always feel like they can escape life’s struggles and come HOME. There is a sign that sits on our mantel that says, “We may not have it all together, but together WE HAVE IT ALL.”

We care more about our customers’ needs than about a big sale. We try to match the perfect trailer to our customers’ applications. We are your modern day Mom and Pop store, with the third generation now helping out. We have worked hard to build a reputation as honest, knowledgeable and fair. We carry all types of trailers: utility, dump, cargo and now even horse trailers. We have a full-service shop and our motto is “We sell the best and service the rest!”

How did you get your start? In 1988 a young couple moved to SC from Texas to sell Diamond C Trailers. They leased a house on Augusta Road that would serve as a home and office for their new trailer business. Wanda’s parents owned the house, and after about 10 months the Texas couple got homesick and did not want to haul the trailers back to Texas, so they asked if we would like to go into the trailer business. Twenty-three years later, as they say, the rest is history.

POSH PAWS GROOMING & PET SPA, LLC Seta Chorbadjian, Owner

Warm, adventurous, happy, cosmopolitan, passionate, multicultural, tenacious, persevering What is the most rewarding experience you have ever had? I have had several rewarding and life changing experiences. One of the profound experiences was immigrating to Canada from Jordan in my late twenties. We’re talking about a time when there was no Internet, no satellite and the world was not a global village like it is today. It was a life-changing experience for me. Living in a different culture, adapting and assimilating. Although it was difficult in the beginning, it definitely was a rewarding experience. It broadened my horizons to say the least. What made you start your business? In 2009 I married my husband and moved to Greenville. When I visited Falls Park for the first time in May of 2009, I knew right there and then that I wanted to start a pet business in downtown Greenville. Thus, a career in the pet profession was born. My husband inspired me, encouraged me, and tolerated the many long hours I put into studying and preparing for this profession. What is the bravest thing you’ve ever done? I worked in Iraq during the war between 2003-2006. Three weeks into my stay we were attacked by the insurgents. It was a scary experience. I was ready to come home. But then I had to look at the bigger picture. We were there for humanitarian reasons and there was work to be done. So, by the grace of God, I was safe and was able to stay there for almost three years to continue working on the assigned projects. What was your first job, and how did you get it? My first job had nothing to do with what I’m doing now. I was living in Jordan and I saw an ad in the paper that read “A diplomatic mission looking to hire a person fluent in English.” I applied for the position and it turned out to be at the US Embassy. I worked for the Controller’s Office for about 10 years processing payroll and disbursing project related expenses. I held that position until I immigrated to Canada.

BTC2013_LAYOUT REV.indd 16

How did you get your start? My two very first Dachshunds, Ringo and Jenna, had a huge impact on what I’m doing today. Jenna was rescued and driven to me from Alabama to Toronto. Over the years, Jenna and I formed a strong bond. As a result, I volunteered for the Canadian Dachshund Rescue and served on their Board of Directors from 2000-2003. Although Ringo and Jenna are no longer with me, they ignited a passion in me to start this adventure into the grooming profession. Why should people do business with you? Posh Paws is a professional, full-service grooming salon and spa. We specialize in grooming your feline and/or canine companions, as well as canine massage. Grooming one pet at a time limits the distress that some pets experience during the grooming process; this is why at Posh Paws we will only groom one pet at a time. Premium products, soothing music, clean environment, and aromatherapy are but some of the other attributes you and your pets will appreciate. What is the legacy you would like to leave behind? Obviously, I want to be successful. I also want to set a great example to young and aspiring groomers. Grooming is not about bathing and/or shaving a pet down. It’s about being passionate about what you do, and compassionate towards the animals. Additionally, it is important to stay abreast of the latest trends in the industry, gaining expertise in the field to better serve our pets. It’s about using creativity, flare and expressing oneself to make our pets feel good and look good.

BRADSHAW, GORDON & CLINKSCALES, LLC

Dell Baker, Andy Foth, Mandy Satterfield, Pete Tiffany, Sandy Watkins, Del Bradshaw, Laura Foster, Roger Clinkscales Integrity, humility, timeliness, thorough, honest, trustworthy, friendly, helpful What is your favorite thing about the Upstate?

What is the best part of owning your own business?

Roger Clinkscales: My favorite thing about the Upstate is the people. They have a “can do” attitude, are constantly looking toward the future, are always friendly and willing to help others in many ways, including charitable giving, volunteering and mentoring the next generation. We constantly meet Upstate residents who have lived in numerous places and say they will never move again because of the people. Our firm is lucky to be located in such a wonderful place and have great people as clients and staff.

Pete Tiffany: I enjoy employing and working with great people at our office. I like getting to know different people and businesses and helping them all to be successful. We all work in this business to help other people to the best of our ability, whether that involves preparing a tax return, working on a financial statement or helping a client with virtually any type of business issue. It is truly our pleasure to help other people and the community.

What is the legacy you would like to leave behind?

Dell Baker: Professionalism and personal service can go together, and at BG&C we prove it. I often hear from clients how much they appreciate working with a CPA firm whose people are competent, accessible and personable. Since 1980, BG&C has grown to 37 professionals and support staff by providing quality tax and accounting services to local businesses and individuals, while remaining readily available for client phone calls and visits. If you want a CPA firm that knows your community and you, BG&C is that firm!

Roger Clinkscales: My parents left the legacy of a better Greenville community than when they started their community volunteer work. I want to leave a similar legacy, and with the help of current partners and current and past employees, I believe Bradshaw, Gordon & Clinkscales will be a viable business for years to come. The firm will provide its clients reliable professional services, its staff good jobs and opportunities, and the Greenville community with motivated volunteers. In the business community, what could be a better legacy?

Why should people do business with you?

What made you start your business? Del Bradshaw: In the late 1970s self-employment was not my original goal. Seeking a greater challenge, in May 1980, the opportunity arose and my life’s journey began. Acknowledging the difference this “started from scratch” public accounting firm has made for so many wonderful people is my greatest joy today. Over the last 33 years BG&C has positively touched thousands of lives and crossed paths with some of the brightest employees and partners imaginable. If I had it to do over again, I wouldn’t change a thing. 18

MORTGAGES WITHOUT OBSTACLES. 25 YEARS STRONG. After discovering a shared commitment to excellence and track record of strong performance, Dallas-based PrimeLending approached Citizen’s First. The result of last year’s merger means the local mortgage lender delivers even better, faster service to its growing client base. Founded in 2001 by Lance King and Mark Hawkins, Citizen’s First, with its three branches, was already an established leader in the Upstate mortgage market. The company won the South Carolina Housing Authority’s Lender of the Year 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 and was GSA Business Magazine’s 2007 number one volume lender. The opportunity with PrimeLending, a PlainsCapital Bank, one of the nation’s premier lenders, sweetened the pot. “We did considerable research into PrimeLending’s stability,” says King. “Their commitment to mortgage lending is phenomenal in the industry.” As PrimeLending branches, the local firm is now a full-service mortgage banking institution, underwriting and lending its own money on a wide array of loan products. With quick, efficient transactions of 48 hours or less, its customers are the ultimate winners.

A.T. LOCKE

Anna Locke, President Innovative executive energized by open communication What is your favorite thing about the Upstate? My favorite thing about the Upstate of South Carolina is the diversity in thought and perspectives that is blended together in the region. Individuals from around the world choose to call this place home. The wealth of opportunities – both personal and professional – is impressive. My husband and I travel to many places and, while we enjoy learning new cultures, we always enjoy returning home to the Upstate.

What is the one small thing that always makes you happy? Seeing the sun’s rays bursting through a puffy white cloud always, and I must say always, makes me happy. The directness of the rays that seem to extend forever reminds me of the strength and opportunity we are granted each day to move forward. Things may not seem to be going our way but the sun (the answer) has not been diminished and is still just as powerful as we remembered.

What is one lesson you learned in school that you will never forget? Every participant in a musical performance is important. Every note on the page contributes to the beautiful sound heard by the audience. As a piccolo player growing up, my seat was in the front row – close enough to see the perspiration dripping off of the conductor. Our conductor taught us to focus on the collected sound, the end result. If we didn’t, we were simply a group of solo performances playing at the same time. The collected sound was the most brilliant.

What advice would you give a young person just starting out in business? Come to every new conversation with your own opinion. Don’t let someone else’s thought become your own just because you don’t have one. Listen with intention. Ask questions. If you sense that you are losing yourself to your surroundings, grab hold and stand firm. Be yourself first and what someone else wants second, third, or never. Be you!

What is the most challenging part of owning your own business? Staying focused on the goal is tough for me. Everything is fun and I want to be involved. I love the day to day interaction with my team and have a hard time pulling myself away from the details to focus on long-term goals and strategies. Patience with implementation is also a struggle. Once I do have a great idea, I want it now.

What was your first job, and how did you get it? I believe my first job was at a local deli, in the summer when I was in high school. I can’t remember how I got the job. I just remember that my first role was in the kitchen and it didn’t last long. I don’t like dry bread so I kept neatly closing up the bread bags, complete with twist ties - not understanding the need for speed during the business lunch rush. No wonder I was quickly transitioned to the cash register.

Why should people do business with A.T. LOCKE? A.T. LOCKE brings the team with the right balance of skill sets and perspectives to help a business fully integrate our external function with the internal management team so that everyone is playing off the same sheet of music. For every financial decision within a business, there are multiple perspectives for decision making. With the A.T. LOCKE team at the table, decisions can take on brilliance through just the right balance of accurate, timely and relevant data.

GREENVILLE CARPET ONE Michael Wilson, Owner

Honest, hard-working, sincere, loyal, committed Clemson Tiger fan! What is the most rewarding experience you have ever had?

How has the Upstate helped you?

Without question, my most rewarding experience is being a father. My wife and I have three boys and one girl, ages 4 to 18. My happiest moments are with my family. Whether I’m playing tag with my youngest, reading with my daughter, watching my boys play ball, or visiting college campuses with my oldest, I love spending time with our children. My wife and I feel blessed we have been able to create a comfortable home and “hang out” place regardless of their age.

The Upstate community has been very good to me. Despite the recent economic downturn, I was able to expand Michael & Company Interiors with the purchase of Greenville Carpet One in December 2011. Greenville Carpet One is a division of the largest flooring retailer in the United States. Because of the enduring support of our community and loyalty of our customers, I am able to continue to do what I love. I cannot imagine a better place to work or live than Upstate South Carolina.

What is the legacy you would like to leave behind? When I think about the legacy I’d like to leave behind, my first thought is that of my children. If nothing else, I pray my faith journey will have a positive influence on my children’s continued spiritual growth. I hope too they will learn from me an honest work ethic, to give of yourself as much as you can to the best of your ability, always remain sincere and thoughtful of the needs and concerns of others … and to always enjoy life.

How did you get your start? After graduating from high school, my brother and I chose to take a leap of faith and open our own carpet cleaning business. Our small business grew into a retail carpet and paint store and within only a few years, we began operating as a residential/commercial design and installation company. In 1988, I sold my part of the business and ventured out on my own. I opened Michael & Company Interiors in Greenville and am proud to say this year we are celebrating our 25th anniversary. 24

Why should people do business with you? We take pride in our commitment to our customers – understanding and evaluating their needs and guaranteeing our work start to finish. Our team of designers and sales specialists work together to tailor a custom solution to our customers’ needs. Our vast selection of products and warranties are unmatched and give us an edge over our competition. And, we strive to always make sure our customers have the knowledge they need to make the best purchase for their business or home.

GOLD COLLECTIONS

Ashley & Frank Clark, Owners Creative, hard-working, caring, friendly, trusted, reasonable, experienced What makes you laugh?

What is the most challenging part of owning your own business?

Our children make us laugh. We have three children, ages 16, 14 and 10. Life at any stage brings challenges and obstacles. Add children to the mix and you have a formula for humor. Sometimes you just have to chuckle at life and move on.

The most challenging part of owning your own business is finding the balance between family and work and as a small business owner, that is not always easy to do. You really have to put 110% into each of them for both to be successful. That is where the blessing of being a family-owned business comes into play. One family member is always there to help with the business or family. We are grateful that our family helps us take on the challenge.

What is the legacy you would like to leave behind? We would like to leave behind a legacy of a successful family business built on hard work and Christian values. Twenty years of experience has taught us a thing or two about creating and selling beautiful jewelry. We take pride in the strong relationships we have developed over the years with our customers and community. That involvement means a great deal to both of us.

How did you get your start? My mom and my husband, Frank, started Gold Collections in 1992. They really weren’t sure what they were getting into, starting a family business. Frank was the expert jewelry repairman and my mom the very energetic sales person. It didn’t take long for them to realize that it was working and they needed extra help. In 1998 I began working here full time. We moved to our current location on Fairview Road in Simpsonville in 2003 to expand our showroom floor.

We take pride in helping our customers choose that perfect piece of jewelry for that special occasion, in turn creating a happy memory that can last a lifetime. Dr. Hughes was my orthodontist twenty-three years ago. I was one of his first patients, and now he is one of my closest friends. My oldest son, Chapman, has the privilege of not only being a patient of Dr. Hughes, but his godson, as well. Dr. Hughes has served as a role model to me in so many ways. I admire his faith, family life, and work ethic. I would recommend him to anyone looking for the best orthodontist in town. — Jacob Mann

MELISSA MORRELL Owner, Greenville’s Agent 24/7

Blessed mother & wife, dedicated realtor, passionate volunteer What is the best advice you have ever received? Someone close to me once said, There is a “season” for all things. You have opportunities and moments in life to do certain things and play certain roles. My challenge is trying not to do and be everything at one time. Life is short and I tend to live it to the very fullest! Other than family, who were the most important people in your life growing up? I was a classical ballet dancer from the age of 5 until I entered high school. My dance instructors were instrumental in teaching me discipline and focus, as well as growing my self-confidence at a young age. My 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Gibson, was another key influencer in my life. She gave me a love for writing which eventually resulted in a Journalism degree from the University of South Carolina. How did you get your start? A local custom home builder gave me my start as a REALTOR. The knowledge, connections and experiences I gained have been invaluable. As I transitioned from new construction to the broader marketplace I have drawn upon those early days and am so very thankful. What advice would you give a young person just starting out in business? Find your passion. Find something that makes you stay up at night or makes you cry. We each are given talents and skills and it’s our responsibility to grow those qualities to benefit others in our lives. In this way, work won’t ever feel like “work.” What does your company do best? When developing my brand name and mission, the one thing that I heard over and over from my past clients and even fellow agents was my level of responsiveness. The result was Greenville’s Agent 24/7. I truly make an effort every day to respond to the needs and goals of my clients. They deserve it. My dedication is what has earned me the title of #1 Agent for Prudential C. Dan Joyner for two consecutive years. So just BRING IT!

GINGER & ASHLEY SHERMAN

Photography by Parkkonen Photography

Ginger: Energetic, experienced, sense of humor, involved

Ashley: Positive, professional, analytical, results-oriented What is the best gift you have ever received?

Why did you choose the Upstate for your business?

Our son, Lee, was born in September 1993 and has been the greatest joy of our lives. We have had wonderful adventures traveling together as a family, and exposing Lee to our love of the outdoors. Our vacations have ranged from rock climbing in Alaska, skiing in Colorado and Wyoming, to trekking in Italy. Watching a child grow and mature is the best gift a parent can receive. Lee is now a freshman at Wofford College where he is pursuing his own dreams.

We have witnessed the growth in Greenville since moving here in the mid 1970s. We think this expansion in Greenville provides great opportunities for young people starting their careers as well as for seasoned professionals, making the Upstate a great place to live and work. We love the cultural and philanthropic opportunities as well, and can easily share our enthusiasm with newcomers to the area.

What would I be surprised to learn about you?

How is your business different from your competition?

Ginger: On a bet that I couldn’t run a marathon in under four hours, I jumped in the race and finished in three hours and 42 minutes! I couldn’t walk for a week, but I won the bet!

We both love working with people. When a client comes to us, we listen carefully to their preferences, their short and long-term goals, and strive to merge them into an achievable objective. Our focus and determination as we help each client realize their dreams set us apart.

Ashley: I was a tennis pro at the Gainesville Country Club while working my way through graduate school at the University of Florida.

What made you start your business? We both had rewarding careers in other fields. Ginger as a regional manager with a national clothing company and Ashley as a CPA and investment advisor with South Carolina companies. By working together as Realtors, we are able to capitalize on the respective strengths we each bring to the table. Ginger’s drive and experience in sales complement Ashley’s analytical approach which stems from his background in accounting and investments. Together we are equipped to lead our clients toward an informed decision about their real estate needs.

HEARING SOLUTIONS BY MARCY

Marcy Stowell, MA, FAAA, Owner Tenacious, free spirited, funny, blessed, dynamic, respectful, curious, dependable What have you done (DOING) for the community that you are most proud of? To help someone be able to hear in all of their life environments is my greatest reward. Fitting the best hearing aids for someone’s particular hearing loss is great. But, it doesn’t stop there. Even the best hearing aids do not work everywhere. That is where Hearing Loops come into play. By using Hearing Loops, a person’s hearing aids double their capacity. My husband James and I started the LOOP GREENVILLE initiative in December 2011. LOOP SC, LOOP NC, and LOOP GA followed.

What was your “ah-ha” moment?

What does home mean to you? Home means sharing food, laughter, love and good stories around the dining room table.

How is your business different from your competition? Between Hearing Solutions by Marcy and American Hearing Loop, we hope to provide a full-service approach to meeting our clients’ hearing needs. James’ engineering background coupled with my audiological background will be the perfect way to find the best solution to everyone’s various listening/hearing needs.

In November 2011, the NY Times published an article on how all the subways in NY were being equipped with Hearing Loops. A sound bite was provided and the auditory example just blew me away. I began researching how to get this in our area. I knew the American Disabilities Act would go into effect for hearing loss in March of 2012 so it seemed a perfect time to push for this benefit for all of my patients with hearing loss.

What made you start your business?

I opened Hearing Solutions by Marcy, Inc. in the hopes that I could get out into the community and teach about hearing loss, hearing aids, Hearing Loops and how to implement them. I realized that to get Looping to take off in my area, I would have to be the voice, and educate our leaders, so the value of Looping would be understood and the community could embrace it and help move the Loop initiative forward.

Our goal: make your brand a success! What is the best advice you have ever received?

How did you get your start?

We might agree that as a company our best advice came from our friend Jerry Cooper. We were young, facing those early challenges, taking two steps forward, then one back and had strong opposition from a billion dollar company. Jerry told us to stay strong and stay the course. Keep digging, even if it’s one shovel at a time. It meant a lot then and even does now. As a salesperson of mine used to say, “They can’t eat ya!” Keep plugging!

This picture says it all. Joel and I met every morning for weeks around my kitchen table, this very table, trying to decide what avenues to pursue. When buying two companies in decline became the answer, we knew it would be a huge gamble. However, we put ALL of our chips in to form emediagroup. We’ve been blessed, and since our humble beginning have purchased two other companies. Oh yeah, and we love our dogs too (Amos, Sampson, and Floyd Bishop—pictured; Copper Hogg—not pictured)

What does your company do best? We’re flexible, fast, yet seem bigger than we really are. I always tell folks our boat is big enough to take into deep water, yet small enough to not hit an iceberg. Our folks have an incredible work ethic for our clients, and I dare not say many other people can turn print jobs as fast as we can. We do make mistakes, but we own them, quickly. We’re honest and always try to do the right thing. It’s why we continue to be successful.

What have you done for the community that you are most proud of? I’m proud of our company for giving back to the community. In 2012 we did our customary give to BI-LO charities (serving many charities). We also give to Meals on Wheels, the Meyer Center, Ronald McDonald House, Senior Action, SCCT, Lead Academy, Cancer Society, Wounded Warriors and other veteran events. We try to help children, the elderly and our brave soldiers with our contributions, but we also donate our time. We do MOW routes and volunteer at the Meyer Center. We do our best to give back!

What is the best part of owning your own business? The ability and flexibility to make decisions for our company and our folks. Joel is incredibly smart and I’m the touchy-feely guy. We complement each other well. Even though we might see things from different angles, we have the same goal and purpose for our company, our people, our clients and our community. If we want to buy equipment, have a company lunch or dinner, maybe give something back to charity, we can make those decisions quickly and without too much red tape.

SEALEVEL SYSTEMS, INC. Tom O’Hanlan, Owner Driven, fun, academic, family-oriented, caring, generous, rebellious

What is the best advice you have ever received?

What made you start your business?

To pursue an engineering degree … and that was good advice! Another piece of advice I received was that you learn more with your ears open and your mouth shut. I learned early on that it is important to listen to others who have done similar things, not be cocky or vain (even when you’re right), and get all of the facts before making a decision. In business, however, you must lead, and that means making those tough calls after weighing all the options. Trust your gut instincts.

Losing a job and having the desire and groundwork in place to start out on my own. Sealevel’s first two products were developed prior to the formation of the company in 1986. The IBM PC was increasingly being utilized to replace older minicomputers or to allow implementation of new corporate manufacturing and monitoring operations. I was consulting on textile machine monitoring. The PC was the ideal “brain,” but lacked the interface electronics to connect to factory equipment. We still sell the equivalent of both of these products.

What is the one small thing that always makes you happy? I’m blessed in that all my kids and grandkids are within 30 miles. I didn’t know either of my grandfathers, so I’m enjoying being one. We do a lot with our grandkids from travel to playing on the farm. They are learning (along with me) all about the farm. I’ve tried to show them that you can do, be or build anything. We make and paint Christmas ornaments in my shop. We recently devised a quad marshmallow roaster stick holder for making s’mores.

What have you done for the community that you are most proud of? I have helped shape the community through economic development, job creation, urban re-development and education. Hopefully, I’ve set a good example. I have served or am currently serving on several boards and elected positions that benefit the community. I currently serve on the Baptist Easley Hospital Board of Directors. In the past, I’ve enjoyed serving on Liberty’s City Council and with the gifted people on the Clemson University Research Foundation board.

What advice would you give a young person just starting out in business? Customer service is the largest single factor to success. A dime cut here will cost you dollars, but a dime spent here will net you dollars. Don’t burn bridges.

What does your company do best? Sealevel provides solutions to real world problems that move the ball forward—whether that be in military communications, hospital bed controllers, boat navigation or 911 call process/monitoring and control. We always deliver what we promise: quality designed, manufactured and well-supported products. A few years ago, I wrote about my promise to our customers. To read “Tom’s 5 Promises to Sealevel Customers,” visit my blog at www.sealevel.com/ community/blog/toms-5-promises-to-sealevel-customers/. “All ya gotta do is give ‘em what they want” comes to mind.

How did you get your start? I took apart electronic things as a kid, and I eventually learned how to put them back together. I was learning to play bass guitar, but I didn’t have an amplifier for it. My first guitar amplifier was my parents’ old record player, modified for a bass guitar pickup. I started my first band in the seventh grade. That was a good early business experience. In school shop class, I built the big speakers for the PA system.

HERLONG BATES BURNETT INSURANCE (L to R) Susan Finley, Curtis Taylor, Beverly Duvall, Tom Bates, Christy Hobson, Michael Herlong

Community, assurance, family, savings, personal, insurance, devoted, compassionate What is the best advice you have ever received?

What have you done for the community that you are most proud of?

The best advice I ever received was twofold. The first is: always make it about the other person, and never lead with the mindset of “what is in it for me?” Focus on the needs of others and a foundation of trust will grow. The second is: simplicity is essential for success. Hone in on what your company is extremely versed in and run with it. Assume your clients are not versed and provide a service that allows them to not worry about anything.

Our participation in the Make-a-Wish foundation has been life changing. We have been given the opportunity to make these kids’ dreams come true. There is nothing more rewarding than watching them break out into huge smiles when they hear the news. It reminds you just how precious life is and how lucky we are to be able to help make just a small mark on our community.

What is the best part of owning a business?

What is the legacy you want to leave behind?

We thrive on interaction with our clients. Helping people is the core of our business. Getting to know people on a first-name basis is the best part of owning a business. We love not only handling your accounts but knowing your dog’s name and what your weekend plans are. We are like a family and treat our clients as if they were our brothers and sisters. What a blessing to have a job where that is possible. It makes it worth coming into work every day.

We want people to remember our agency as a group that didn’t make it all about money, but instead strived to make something good happen for our clients. Insurance is truly our passion. If just one person says HBB always followed their intuition and led me in the right direction then we have done our job. We are all linked together by something greater than ourselves– realizing that and working towards a common goal will hopefully leave a powerful legacy behind.

How has the Upstate helped your business? The Upstate encompasses so much more than just Greenville; it’s Travelers Rest, Simpsonville, Easley, and Mauldin, too. The Upstate is such a happy, healthy, driven community with so many opportunities to network and grow our business. The people are so welcoming and open to new, innovative ideas. We have found that being part of the Upstate pushes us to stay on our toes as we constantly look for new ways to help our clients and serve the community. 36

VIRGINIA HAYES Realtor®, Prudential C. Dan Joyner Co.

Personable, dedicated, spontaneous, fun, enthusiastic, caring, professional, knowledgeable What is the best advice you have ever received? The best advice I have ever received is to treat others the way you want to be treated. I focus on being kind and respectful of my fellow realtors, clients and vendors. This has helped me win the respect of those in my business and make wonderful, lasting friendships along the way. Through one client friendship I am gaining an awesome (soon-to-be) sister-in-law! What have you done for the community that you are most proud of? I am so proud to call Greenville home. It’s a wonderful town filled with many opportunities for business, personal and cultural growth. In order for Greenville to continue to grow and thrive, I believe it’s important for everyone to give of their time and talents. Through the years, I’ve logged countless hours serving on local boards, fundraising for local non-profits, and generating publicity for many arts organizations. Each hour I have spent helping make our town a better place is truly rewarding to me. Where would you like to be in 5 years? 10 years? Whether it’s five or ten years into the future, I want to see my life as a success. Success to me is being happy in all aspects of life and achieving balance between work, family, friends and outside interests. It means having strong beliefs and sticking to them. It means serving as a role model to others and having a great reputation. It means making an impact on the lives of others and your community. That’s what I want for my future What is the best part of owning your own business? As a realtor, the demand for your time is high. Your schedule revolves around what’s best for your clients , which is typically after “normal” business hours and on weekends. I’m often asked if I like this schedule and I can honestly say I do. The excitement of interacting with different people on a daily basis, the unpredictability of what your day will hold, and the feeling of freedom found with pockets of time that people working normal hours don’t have are all truly wonderful to me. Why should people do business with you? I believe my knowledge of the Upstate market, extensive experience in real estate sales and marketing, and community involvement are all important reasons to do business with me. What’s most important is what clients say so I’ve included a testimonial from LinkedIn. Top qualities: Great Results, Personable, High Integrity “Virginia helped us with the sale and purchase of our home. Throughout the entire process she was extremely helpful, professional, and had a sincere care for our well-being. I would definitely work with Virginia again.”

HAMILTON & CO.

Dan Hamilton, Founder and Team Leader

A proven leader, steering our community and driving his businesses to success What is your favorite thing about the Upstate? The people. I’ve been a lot of places, and the people here in the Upstate are some of the most genuine and friendly I’ve ever seen. The Upstate is on the RIGHT TRACK, with forward-thinking leaders that helped bring diversity to our economy as textiles faded. We are fortunate to be in a place with a broad and diverse economy and a good mix of manufacturing and servicebased businesses.

What have you done for the community that you are most proud of? It was a privilege to be part of the formation of what was the Greenville Housing Fund and is now Community Works Carolina. It began out of a United Way committee as a way to bring about more affordable housing and has since grown to help address the cycle of poverty by offering micro loans, community loans, and other home buying assistance programs.

Was there a “game changer” in your career? Without a doubt, it was my affiliation with Keller Williams Realty. It’s really almost a leadership development company disguised as a real estate company. No other real estate franchise teaches its CREW to think like business owners, how to hire the right people to build your business, and how to WIN the race to profitability. I was fortunate to be a founding partner of the first KW Market Center in South Carolina. KW is now the largest national real estate franchise in North America and is expanding globally.

What would you do if you weren’t in your present occupation? I would be a high school government or history teacher. I became interested in government service in high school. I’ve always thought it would be fun to teach civics and our responsibility as citizens of the United States.

What was your first job, and how did you get it? My first job out of college was working as field representative for then U.S. Rep. Jim DeMint. I met Jim through a mutual friend while I was in college and worked on his first campaign for Congress. He hired me to work in the district office after he won. It was a wonderful first job to get to see all the “moving parts” of the Upstate and how business and government can work together.

What would I be surprised to learn about you? I’m adopted. My biological mother passed away when I was 9 months old. She hand-picked the family to take me when she died. It’s an amazing story that illustrates God’s sovereign grace and has brought great strength to my faith. I am grateful for the family and heritage God gave me.

How is your business different from your competition? We have a proven, repeatable system to sell homes for up to 18% higher than the average agent can, and we guarantee that we will STAY ON TRACK to sell a home, or we will buy it. Our CREW of specialists proactively manages the multitude of variables in a real estate transaction to help our clients CROSS THE FINISH LINE netting the most amount of money possible. We all come out WINNERS, and that is what makes it all worth it.

RYAN COOK, DMD

Owner, Family & Cosmetic Dentistry Caring, trustworthy, friendly, dentist who wants to help What is your favorite thing about the Upstate? Thing? I would say things. Greenville and the surrounding areas have a vibrancy and local feel that many places lack. Good people, good food, and good weather mix very well.

What is the best gift you have ever received? Here is the “canned answer.” My beautiful wife Allyson, or was it my headstrong blonde beauty of a daughter Emerson? Could it also be my little crazy and destructive son James? Canned but true, my family has been my most precious gift.

What is your favorite childhood memory? Hitting a walk-off home run to win the championship, getting mobbed by my teammates between 3rd base and home plate … then not touching home plate. Was called out by the umpire. It was total and supreme happiness and complete devastation all in the span of 60 seconds!

How did you get your start? After graduating from dental school in 2002, I joined a partnership with a great cosmetic dentist here in Greenville. We opened up a second location and two years later I made him an offer on one of the offices. I learned more about complicated dental cosmetics from him in those two years than I would have in 10. On the business side, I learned that success in the clinical side of dentistry will falter if your team doesn’t focus on excellent customer service.

What was your first job, and how did you get it? My first job was at a body repair shop. I thought at the time it would be cool to learn how to repair cars and learn how to paint them. The nostalgia of that job wore off about one hour into sanding down old paint on a Camaro. Good grief, that was a rough two summers. For the next two summers I worked for a 65-year-old general contractor. Guess who lifted every roofing shingle and moved every single piece of dirt or gravel?

Why did you choose the Upstate for your business? I met my wife Allyson in Ft. Lauderdale, FL while I was in dental school. She was a student at Clemson University and we made it up to the football games several times a year. Allyson had many friends in Greenville as well, and while we were visiting, we spent time downtown. It was so vibrant but had the small-town feel we both wanted. The access to Charlotte and Atlanta was another plus. We chose to settle here and we love it!

What does your company do best? I do not have structured “selling” systems in my offices. Our customer service is top notch and you will feel comfortable and attended to during your stay with us. We value our guest’s time and you won’t be sitting around waiting on me for long. We also do a great job at presenting you with options. I’m not here to tell you what to do or sell you a product or service you didn’t ask for. We are your advocates and you will know it.

Nine men had a mission to bring banking closer to home. That mission began its fulfillment in March 1946 when Bank of Travelers Rest opened its doors. Under the leadership of John White, the bank made banking more accessible to the people living in communities around Northern Greenville County. Today that mission continues under the leadership of Bruce White. Bank of Travelers Rest is the oldest bank to be chartered and still headquartered in Greenville County. It has grown to nine branches located in Travelers Rest, Marietta, Berea, Greenville and Greer/Taylors. From traditional banking products to technologybased banking, Bank of Travelers Rest has become a full-service financial institution while staying committed and involved in the communities it serves. Pictured on the Swamp Rabbit Trail, these branch managers operate their locations with the same hometown values that have sustained the bank for 67 years. As the bank continues to grow, it pairs the charm of small town Travelers Rest with the resources and technology that serve the needs of our customers. Bank of Travelers Rest is proud to celebrate our heritage of

PALMETTO OLIVE OIL CO.

Michael and Sandy Burn with Charlotte and Michael Easler, Owners

Healthy, enthusiastic, fresh, knowledgeable, fun, friendly, flavorful, entrepreneurs What does your company do best?

What is your favorite thing about the Upstate?

Palmetto Olive Oil Co. is the best venue to purchase the freshest extra virgin olive oils and quality aged balsamic vinegars in the Upstate. We not only offer the largest variety, but the customer is able to taste before they purchase. Whether you have a gourmet palate or prefer good “southern comfort food,” we can make your diet healthier and your cooking will taste even better than your grandmother used to make.

We love the diversity of the people and the ever-growing business climate of the Upstate. Eager to embrace this unique concept, Greenvillians have enjoyed the ability to enhance their own cooking to rival the taste of high-end restaurant quality food and feel good about what they are eating.

What made you start your business? We started Palmetto Olive Oil Co. out of a desire to own our own business. Not only did we not have experience in the olive oil business, we were new to retail in general. With our love of good food and healthy eating, we wanted to educate our customers on how truly fresh extra virgin olive oils and quality aged balsamic vinegars can improve not only their health, but enhance the flavor of their food.

What is the bravest thing you’ve ever done? In the middle of a recession, we opted to open Palmetto Olive Oil Co. in an untested market. While many of our friends believed this was not the best of business ventures, our leap of faith has proved to be quite rewarding.

What is the best part of owning your own business?

The best part of owning our business is introducing our customers to the many varieties and flavors of oils and vinegars we offer. We love to mix pairings such as Chipotle olive oil and Pineapple balsamic vinegar or Wild Mushroom and Sage olive oil with Cranberry Pear balsamic to take them to a whole new level of culinary pleasure. It is fun to watch people taste our product for the first time and realize what a fresh, quality olive oil can do for their food.

SW PROMOTIONS, LLC

Sam White Jr., Owner Trustworthy, hard-working, involved, sense of humor, respectful, organized What is your favorite childhood memory?

Was there a “game changer” in your career?

This may not be my favorite but it has stuck with me the longest. In the third grade, I had to write, “It is nice to be important but it is more important to be nice” 50 times on the chalkboard. This lesson has stuck with me throughout the years. I think to this day it applies to who I am as a person, how I want my children to be and how I am known in the community.

Obviously, for me it was to start SW Promotions last year. Having worked in the promotional item business for over 15 years, I felt the timing was perfect to go out on my own. So far, I have been really encouraged and appreciative for what we have done but certainly will continue to strive for perfection. Our company has a good blend of experienced staff with a strong work ethic so we are looking forward to a bright future!

Why should people do business with you? Easy answer—our customers are our top priority and we know our success depends upon their satisfaction! Therefore, we strive to make every order a great experience so that a first order will develop into a long-term partnership. Prompt service, attention to detail, creativity and on-time delivery are our main focuses. With our background of over 30 years of experience in this business, we have the knowledge and the capability to zero-in on each customer’s specific needs.

What is your pet peeve? Tardiness! Being on time is being respectful of someone else’s time. I do get teased for being early but I believe it is a good thing to not be late. I think it is especially important in sales, customer service and in everyday business to be respectful of my clients’ schedules.

What did you want to be when you grew up? A sports announcer! I have always been fascinated with this profession as I thought it would be tons of fun. In fact, in seventh grade I was invited to broadcast a couple of innings with the late Jim Phillips, who was doing the play by play for the Greenville Braves at the time. I never pursued it but I still enjoy imitating announcers and singing around the house. If you don’t believe me, just ask my family!

ACCU-BRICK PAVING SYSTEMS

Darren and Lisanne Anderson, Owners Positive, driven, focused, kind, family-oriented, motivated, successful, athletic What is the one small thing that always makes you happy?

Why did you choose the Upstate for your business?

I am most happy playing sports with my family. Our children like a variety of athletics including hockey, soccer, and baseball. It is not uncommon for us to spend the majority of our free time on the ice or at the ball field. I grew up in Canada playing hockey, as well as at Iowa State University. As an adult, I have continued to play recreationally and coach my children’s hockey team. Sports are most definitely a major priority in our lives.

When considering a location to grow our company, our first priority was to find a familyfriendly community in which to raise our children so that they would be in the best environment possible. We also wanted to live in an area with all four seasons without the extreme winter weather we experienced in Canada. The Upstate has the ideal climate where outdoor spaces can be enjoyed throughout the year. We now service locations throughout the Carolinas and have an office in Charleston.

What is the best advice you have ever received? I learned at an early age that it is important to surround yourself with trustworthy people who share your interests, values and goals. Your true friends are the ones who motivate you and encourage you to be your best. The company you keep has a huge impact on your success because it impacts your attitude and behavior. As a business owner, I make it a priority to hire talented and reliable employees who are also enjoyable to be around.

What would I be surprised to learn about you? I am a total Foodie! My wife and I enjoy eating at many of the Upstate’s nicest restaurants. Lisanne is a huge connoisseur of sushi. One of my Southern favorites is shrimp and grits, a unique dish that is much different from the typical Canadian cuisine. Lisanne and I hadn’t experienced them until we moved to the Upstate. Since then, our family has acquired a true appreciation for the Southern culinary experience.

What made you start your business? I grew up in Ontario, Canada, where cold weather placed limitations on enjoying the outdoors. As a teenager, I started my first business applying a protective coating to driveways and other outdoor surfaces. My appreciation for a warmer climate and my entrepreneurial spirit fed my desire to invest in a business that promoted outdoor living. Lisanne and I established Accu-Brick while at Iowa State University and moved to the Upstate in 1999. We’ve developed strong relationships with high-end builders and landscape architects in the local area.

What advice would you give a young person just starting out in business? I would encourage young entrepreneurs to choose a business endeavor based on what they are most passionate about. Small business ownership is extremely time consuming and requires a great deal of commitment to achieve success. Therefore, it is important to enjoy your work and to hire a team of employees who appreciate your enthusiasm. I would recommend that a young business owner establish a strong relationship with his or her staff that is based on commitment, trust and respect.

Why should people do business with you? We are known for our diverse brick paving systems and superior installation. From patios and pool decks to driveways and walkways, our pavers complement your home and add curb appeal. We strive to give customers our best ideas with their budget in mind. Our goal is to create a space that will increase their home value and enable them to enjoy the outdoors in a comfortable and inviting setting. With that in mind, the tagline for our business was created: “Expect More from Your Outdoors.”

REEDY RIVER DENTISTRY Dr. J. Hunter Hicklin, Owner Outgoing, meticulous, dedicated, dependable, trustworthy, patient, easygoing, adventurous What is the bravest thing you’ve ever done? Without a doubt, starting my own dental practice. It has been exciting and extremely rewarding but has had its share of challenging moments. I really had to trust that people would catch on to my vision. Like anyone else, I had my doubts and fears, but that comes with the territory. I figure that anything worth having in life will not always come easy.

What would I be surprised to learn about you? Despite living in the city, my wife and I have our own backyard chickens and a summer garden. We made a pact in 2012 to get egg-laying hens. After a lot of research, building a coop, and getting our neighbors’ approval, we haven’t looked back! The six “girls” have become part of the family and surprisingly our Boykin Spaniel, Cooper, does great with them. We have enjoyed eating fresh food that comes from our own yard and love sharing our eggs and produce.

What does home mean to you? Home means a lot of different things to me. My childhood was spent in Spartanburg, and I still love to go stay in the same house where I grew up. My wife is from Sumter, and after countless trips and getting married there, it has become a special place to me. We are blessed to both feel “at home” with each other’s families. As a student at Furman, Greenville became my home away from home, and now I’m proud to have returned here for good.

What would you do if you weren’t in your present occupation? I probably would have been a South Carolina DNR officer. My favorite hobbies include hiking, camping, kayaking, hunting, and fishing. Spending time outdoors has really given me a deep appreciation for our natural resources. It would be very rewarding to help protect and preserve them for future generations.

What is the best part of owning your own business? I have been able to envision and develop my dental practice from day one. I was well prepared as a result of having completed a general dentistry residency and working in some outstanding dental practices in the Upstate. I enjoyed being heavily involved in the design of my building, the selection of equipment, and putting together my team of compassionate employees. It is rewarding to have a growing number of patients trust us, and we love getting to know them beyond their dental needs.

What did you want to be when you grew up? My father was a family physician, so I grew up wanting to be a doctor like him. I saw how he developed lasting relationships with his patients and was able to care for them in so many ways. Although I took a slightly different route by going to dental school, I feel like I have found a profession that suits my personality while also serving people and my community.

Why should people do business with you? We go above and beyond to get to know what is important to you, besides just your dental concerns. Our goal is to treat you like we want to be treated, and do everything we can to make your experience as pleasant as possible. We understand people have anxieties and fears about dental appointments, and we bend over backwards to help you feel comfortable. If you have any special considerations related to your appointment times or treatment, we would like to accommodate them for you and your family.

CHRISTOPHER ASHLEY SALON Chris Maddox, Owner Inventive, artistic, genuine, bold, driven, faithful, energetic, dedicated What is the best advice you have ever received? “When you’re green you’re growing and when you’re ripe you start to rot!” Every day is an opportunity to see things in a new perspective. It never fails that as soon as you think you have it down, bam, something happens to let you know otherwise. Even if clients have come for years, I study them each time with a new eye trying to evolve their style, however small, to keep them looking fresh and current. Being a robot is a sure path to ordinary.

What is the one small thing that always makes you happy? Deciphering what each client needs and delivering just that, is wonderful. Hair is not about a look. It’s about creating a feeling. We see ourselves every day and what’s up top has much to do with how we feel. When that coif is looking great, we feel confident, excited, even bold. If it’s blah, we can feel frustrated or miserable. But, when you twirl that chair around for the reveal and their face lights up with excitement, no words are necessary. That connection says it all.

What advice would you give a young person just starting out in business? Stay focused on the long term. Everything you choose to do will exponentially affect your career, years down the road. Engross yourself in quality education as often as possible. Work with humility, a positive attitude and a great business code of ethics. Understand that each client is the “star” and you are not. Be honest and loyal to the place you call the “home” of your business. Each new person you encounter has the ability to be your best advertisement so give her an exceptional experience!

Was there a “game changer” in your career? Interning under a couple of amazing French stylists taught me important lessons: To see hair like a tailor fitting you with clothing. To think of hair as a raw material sitting in front of you with great potential! To treat each texture differently and understand it on a deeper level than just a visual one. To remember that what you’re creating must be the right “fit” for each client. The only thing that really matters is that the client is really comfortable with what you have done.

What does your company do best? No one wants to feel like “Combo #2 and supersize it...next!” We focus on clients having fantastic experiences. We view our hair services and products as fun, individual and unique. Our coloring technique calledHAIR PAINTING is the ultimate way to create “childlike” color. This freehand painting of color perfectly accentuates the shape of the cut but more importantly doesn’t look “colored.” Continued training in NY through the years helps keep us original and fresh. You’ll agree when you come in and experience the difference for yourself!

JACOB MANN/COLDWELL BANKER CAINE Jacob Mann, Realtor

Dynamic, energetic, hard-working, fun, generous, husband, father, friend What is your favorite thing about the Upstate?

What is the best part of owning your own business?

My favorite thing about the Upstate is its progressive nature. The growth we have seen has undoubtedly been tremendous, but it is the type of growth that makes the Upstate unique. We have options in our area that rival those of many major cities. Our culinary and arts communities are extraordinary, and our outdoor recreation options are fantastic. The leaders who have spent decades putting these ideas into motion have created a wonderful place to live.

Everyone’s time is extremely valuable. Time with my family is the most valuable. Working in real estate allows me to have a flexible schedule. Granted, I frequently work seven days a week, but I am able to carve out time to be at my children’s class programs, sporting events and field trips, and occasionally even time to take my beautiful wife on a date! I chose to be affiliated with CB Caine, the best there is! The AMAZING staff has helped my business immensely!

What does home mean to you?

Why should people do business with you?

Home means the world to me. It is where my family creates memories that will last a lifetime. It is where I can bring people together to share the joys of friendships, both old and new. It is where my gift of generosity is shared with so many as we enjoy being the “hosts.” A house is simply a structure with walls and a roof. A home is an entirely different place. It is my pleasure to help my clients turn a house into their “home.”

How did you get your start? Real Estate is second nature to me. My father (who is my hero and mentor) is in the real estate and development business. When I was a child, he would drive our whole family around looking at houses, trying to find the most desirable areas for his particular clients. As an adult, I knew I wanted to be in sales so when it came time to settle into a career, real estate was a natural fit. I met with Brad Halter and started sellin’ Greenville!

You don’t make it to number one agent in one of Greenville’s largest and most respected real estate firms without a lot of hard work, determination and passion. I have been in this business for 12 years. I was awarded “Rookie of the Year” in my first year and have been the top producing agent at CB Caine for seven of the past nine years up against incredible agents I enjoy working with every day. Why should you do business with me? I LOVE what I do, and it shows! As you can see from the photo above and the yearly results, Jacob Mann is Still On Top!

THE LAWTON TEAM

Karen Lawton, Owner A people-oriented team personifies our business What makes you laugh? My son Bill makes me laugh! You would think with his position as broker for Keller Williams Realty and serving as this year’s president of the Greater Greenville Association of Realtors, he would be one very serious man. But, his sense of humor is often a great relief. He can make everyone laugh, and when he and my older son, Kevin, get together, there is much laughter – especially when they’re laughing with me.

What advice would you give a young person just starting out in business? Advice is easy to give—harder to live. My advice to anyone starting out in real estate is to learn your craft. Find a mentor; if there is no one who you admire that will spend time with you, attend classes. Find a place to work that will invest in you, your education and your knowledge. Arrive early, stay late and prove that you care, join committees and volunteer.

What have you done for the community that you are most proud of?

What does your company do best?

My involvement in the community has been a real high for me! Volunteering with the Greenville Symphony, the JL Mann Marching Band, the Greenville County Youth Orchestra, the Warehouse Theatre, the Greenville Ballet, the Development Council at St. Francis Hospital and raising money for the Children’s Hospital as the foundation director at the Greenville Hospital System have exposed me to wonderful people who care deeply about this community.

With over 90 years of combined experience, the Lawton Team brings a wealth of knowledge to every transaction. Constant education prepares our team to handle the broad range of challenges that exist in today’s market. We LISTEN to our clients. The physical home is important, but the people who live in or will live inside those homes are our focus. We strive to keep our clients for life and believe, like Keller Williams, in building careers worth having, businesses worth owning, and lives worth living.

What made you start your business? I started my own business because I wanted to direct my own destiny. Working for non-profit boards taught me many good lessons – especially how to meet the expectations of different personalities, how to encourage harmony and how to keep an organization fiscally healthy. Never being afraid of change became a big part of the Lawton Team’s success. 52

AJH RENOVATIONS, LLC & DESIGNED FOR DOWNTOWN Chuck & Ariel Hartman, Father & Son Team

Someone bringing critical and analytical thinking to bear What is your favorite thing about the Upstate? When I think about my favorite attribute of the Upstate I immediately think of its geographic location. We in the Upstate, are both industrially well located in the I-85 corridor and wonderfully situated for recreation, both near the mountains and within easy distance of numerous beach resorts. The Upstate benefits immensely from that one thing Realtors value above all else: Location! For me this makes the Upstate a great place to live and also to pursue commercial endeavors. What does home mean to you? Home is defined in many ways, especially by builders, who often think in quantifiable parts. I think of home as parts that combine into a whole. Home is both where I live with my family, watching them grow and achieve their dreams, and it is also being close to extended family. As an extended family living in the Upstate we are able to spend time together, trade tips and insights, and support one another when needed. Home is more than one house, it’s a community. How did you get your start? Fellowship Bible Church, our congregation, did several missions construction projects when I was a teen. One was on Seth Street near Mills Mill, and several were in Miami for a Latino congregation. I caught the construction bug, enjoyed bringing new life back to old buildings, and appreciated the satisfaction of a finished project well done. Several private projects followed from folks excited about helping a teenager get started on a career. What advice would you give a young person just starting out in business? The simplest advice would be not to think that you won’t make the same mistakes everyone makes; I assumed that, and then made the same mistakes everyone makes. I guess that is why they’re the mistakes everyone makes! Watch your processes closely; mind the expenses; and try not to grow faster than your ability to track the numbers. What does your company do best? We think there probably isn’t a home renovation contractor in the Upstate better able to visualize and actualize a wholehouse transformation of an old-neighborhood residence. We follow the flow of the old home, and the atmosphere of the neighborhood, while incorporating the lifestyle needs of the homeowner, to arrive at a seamless renovation that blends the new with the old. 215 E. ACUTECH AUTOMOTIVE INC. Jimmy Williams, Owner

Honda, Acura, Toyota, Lexus service and repair specialist

What is your favorite thing about the Upstate?

How did you get your start?

The Upstate is like one big extended family and we love that since we try to treat our customers like they are family! We want to be sure that we take care of their vehicles just like we take care of our own. We want them to be as safe on the road as we want our families to be, and we work hard at providing great service to meet that goal. Family first, that’s exactly what matters and that means yours or ours!

In 1984 I was an Acura/Honda technician. I was factory trained in California, and worked at an Acura dealership in Alabama. In the late ‘80s moved back to Greenville to work for Rick Hendrix Acura and be closer to my family. In 1990 I opened Acutech, thanks to the support of my family and my friend, Steve Smith. We started with only two bays and have expanded to an 8,000 square foot work space, with tire and alignment services which make us a truly one-stop shop.

What is the legacy you would like to leave behind? We would like to be remembered for our integrity. We think everyone wants to be remembered, but we want to be remembered for our honesty, loyalty and tireless work ethic. We want people to look back and say “Wow. Those guys at Acutech aren’t only great at what they do, but they do it with an incredible amount of integrity and passion.”

What have you done for the community you are most proud of? We support different agencies in the Upstate both financially and with volunteer work. I was named Volunteer of the Year by Crossroads Adolescent Group Home. Most recently we have supported Generations Group Home in Fountain Inn. Being a volunteer is a rewarding, eye-opening experience. I have realized the many hardships that exist in our community. Doing this work has changed my life. I wake up with a mission every morning to “make someone’s day” and hope I am able to accomplish that.

What is the best part about owning your business? I have really enjoyed developing relationships with the diverse group of people I have met over the years. Some of them have turned into life-long relationships. We now are servicing cars that belong to the children of some of our first clients. They are raising families of their own now, and we offer them the same great service, reliability, and honesty that we gave their parents. This gives me such a feeling of satisfaction and is really the best part of owning my own business!

What is your mission statement? “At the heart of any relationship there has to be trust, and earning your trust is meaningful to us.” This is just not a statement hanging on the wall. It’s the foundation of how we run our business. We did not just open our business using someone else’s business model. We had to be true to our own values: honesty, integrity, humility and having very satisfied customers. This is why our business is thriving and we have had 23 successful years of serving this community.

What is the most challenging part of running your business? It is a challenge to prove to people that we are not just like every other shop. We are dedicated to excellence and do everything we can to make sure we deliver the best customer service possible. I have set high standards for my employees and the work they do. My business has grown through word of mouth alone, until now. We have decided to start advertising, since we have expanded our services and look forward to adding new customers to our family!

GABRIEL BUILDERS INC.

Gus Rubio, Owner Detail oriented, faithful, thankful, optimistic, organized, visionary, loves to laugh, determined

What is the best gift you have ever received? Given?

How did you get your start?

The best gift I have received is the gift of freedom, which my parents bravely made possible by leaving their homeland of Cuba and moving to the USA. Basic things, such as religious rights and the opportunity to start a business, are still unheard of in Cuba. My father went back to school to continue his education in the US and became a college professor at Furman. I am very thankful for him and this sacrifice he made for our family.

While in college, I started buying rental properties. I was intrigued with the creative side of the construction business as well as the ability to construct something from a pile of lumber. I would read all that I could concerning the building business and totally fell in love with residential construction. I am very detail oriented, so the unique and beautiful custom homes we build go hand in hand with my abilities.

What does your company do best?

Was there a “game changer” in your career?

We get to know our clients by listening to them and providing individual attention to their needs, questions, and desires. As a former quality control manager, I am passionate about high quality, integrity, timely service, and total customer satisfaction. Our quality and customer service programs have won national awards. In addition, we have won the South Carolina Pinnacle Award in the highest price point for the last four years for outstanding craftsmanship in the construction of quality homes.

In the early ‘90s the economy struggled, and I was caught with six speculative homes. In addition, a developer that I was building two $400,000 houses for went out of business. We cashed in our retirement and the kids’ college funds, sold our house, and moved in with my Mom and Dad. Belinda went back to work and I did not take a salary for three years. I was determined not to give up on this dream for my business. God has blessed our business and family since!

How has the Upstate helped you?

What is one lesson you learned in school that you will never forget?

The natural beauty of the Upstate, the excellent year-round weather, the world-class developments such as The Cliffs, and the warm and friendly people have all been instrumental in attracting folks to the area. We have been privileged to build homes for approximately 40 company presidents and CEOs. In many cases these folks have owned several homes and this Gabriel home will be their last. It will be a generational home, one that will stay in the family and be passed along for generations.

Athletics taught me that hard work, dedication, team work, and perseverance are ingredients for success. A team is comprised of individuals willing to work together diligently towards a common purpose. Our team purpose is to serve the customers with “Ritz Carlton” service, build a home of extreme quality and integrity, and have fun during the process. Without our great team of employees and subcontractors, our success would not be possible!

What is your favorite childhood memory? One of the silliest memories I have is standing in front of a mirror at the age of 5, jibber jabbering as if I could speak English. My all-time favorite memory is of dating my wife Belinda in high school. She was amazing and I knew I wanted to marry her after that first date. After our third date, we knew we would name our first son Gabriel; it is spelled the same in English and Spanish and it means “man of God.”

ROCKY CREEK DENTAL CARE

Photography by carol boone stewart

Skilled and caring team providing functional, beautiful smiles What is the one lesson you learned in school that you will never forget?

What was your first job, and how did you get it?

Dr. Roth: Communicate! If you explain something before it happens, it’s an explanation. If you explain it afterwards, it’s an excuse. We always try to help patients understand their options and possible outcomes of their treatments and choices. This helps us meet our patients’ expectations, leaving everyone smiling!

Dr. Piccione: It was October 23, 1972, and I was a few days away from turning 14. I said I was turning 15 to get the job. My interview consisted of my boss giving me a broom and telling me to sweep the kitchen floor. When I was finished, he said he could tell many things about a person’s work abilities just by how they swept a kitchen floor. He hired me as bus boy making 50 cents an hour plus tips.

What have you done for the community that you are most proud of?

What is your company’s mission statement?

Every year our staff chooses a community project. The doctors and staff team with our patients to make a difference. One year we raised money for the Ronald McDonald House. Our patients purchased raffle tickets for free whitening and donated can tabs. Our staff and doctors came in on a Saturday and worked to get our 25 winners smiling brightly. We had a lot of fun and raised the money for a great cause!

To enthusiastically treat patients with a commitment to sound quality treatments and unyielding pursuit of patient comfort. To always ask ourselves how we can improve the care we can provide. To use the golden rule as a means of professional integrity, honesty and patient advocacy. To grow our family of patients without compromising our mission.

How has the Upstate helped you? Dr. Freedman: I am blessed to work in a profession that I love, with a team that strives for excellence. Feeling fulfilled in my career, I look to the Upstate for ways to balance my family, my work, and my hope to make a positive impact on the community. Being a member of the Junior League of Greenville—an organization that “develops the potential of women, improves the community, and promotes voluntarism”—encourages me to take risks and makes volunteer opportunities readily available.

Aviation is one of those things that can’t be told, it can only be experienced. Once it is experienced, it gets in your blood. We wanted to find a balance of all of the things we had grown to love: aviation, luxury, helping people, and having fun. With this as our motivation, we founded Tempus Jets and five years later we have become a luxury lifestyle brand with exclusive signature events, a quarterly magazine publication, and a non-profit organization, Global Flight Relief.

C. DAN JOYNER PROPERTY MANAGEMENT Alex Crigler, Property Manager-In-Charge

Motivated, hospitable, faithful, strong willed, trustworthy, dedicated, reasonable, team member What is the best advice you have ever received?

What was your first job, and how did you get it?

I’ve been given so much great advice over the course of my life that it’s hard to choose which has been the most valuable. Two things that I try to live by every day are to have a contagious attitude and to treat people fairly. Being in a leadership role you have to encourage, motivate and try to create a positive environment every day. No matter what is going on in my life I try to make my attitude worth catching. Secondly, my grandfather was a firm believer in the golden rule. He always taught us that if we treated people fairly it would benefit everyone.

I was a substitute lifeguard in high school. I needed something that I could balance with summer sports training. I worked at Dove Tree, Greenville Country Club and Gower pools. It was a great summer job. I was able to work outside, hang out with friends and get paid a little bit of money all at the same time. I worked with several people I still keep in touch with today. It was a great way to meet new people in different areas of Greenville.

What does home mean to you? To me, home is a place that gives you a feeling that’s different from any other. It’s a combination of happiness, relief, comfort and excitement. Family is the main trigger for me. When I pull into Greenville, either of my grandparents’ driveways, or even when I’m on family vacation I have this feeling. Home isn’t a specific place for me, it’s where my family is.

What is your company’s mission statement? C. Dan Joyner Property Management Co. is committed to servicing our clients with respect. We take pride in the work that we do and have been doing for over 20 years. As the times have changed so has our focus to the idea that our service is the value-added item that draws renters, owners and homeowner associations. Being partnered with Greenville’s largest real estate firm gives us options that other property management firms would find hard to match.

What was your “ah-ha” moment? At a family gathering after my grandfather passed away, a reporter asked my younger cousin, Dan, if he planned on going into the real estate business. He nonchalantly replied, “Yeah, probably.” The effortlessness in his response was exciting to me. I had always wanted to be in the family business, and at that moment I thought to myself,” “How great would it be to continue this tradition that ‘Pop,’ my dad and uncle had built with my family?” I’ll never forget that night. 60

ATWOOD: FINE ARCHITECTURAL CABINETRY Kris Atwood, Owner Innovative, conscientious, reliable, distinctive, precise, deliberate, intuitive, experienced How did you get your start?

Who is your hero?

I grew up as the son of a cabinet maker. From a young age my dad would teach me the art and skill of fine cabinet building in his shop. I spent many years learning at his side before heading off to college to expand my horizons. After graduating with a degree in architecture, I later bought my dad’s business and grew it into a design/build firm, specializing in interior architecture and fine cabinetry. I’ve loved this profession my whole life.

One of my all-time favorite movies is “It’s A Wonderful Life.” In it, George Bailey is a man who has lived his life serving not only his family, but the whole community. Through his work, he’s made a difference in the lives of many. He doesn’t have a big bank account and finds himself with some financial woes.

What is the best part about owning your own business? The best part of owning my own business is the privilege to work with people I enjoy … from the clients who trust me with a dream for their homes, to the professionals who share the vision for those projects. The Upstate is filled with people passionate about what they do, successful men and women from all walks of life … each of them anxious to create something unique and lasting. Bringing those dreams to life gives me great joy and satisfaction. Even better, many past clients I now call “friends.”

What have you done for the community that you are most proud of? I have been a Rotarian for 30 years. The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise. Toward that end, I have served in many capacities within the organization. Currently, I am serving as District Chair for the Group Study Exchange program which advances international understanding and goodwill through a world fellowship of business professionals united in service. I have also worked extensively on the Holiday Lights project at the Roper Mountain Science Center.

Photography by CHRIS ISHAM photography

BTC2013_LAYOUT REV.indd 61

But in the end, the whole town comes to his aid and brother Harry toasts George saying “to George Bailey, the richest man in town.”

Why should people do business with you? Atwood: Fine Architectural Cabinetry is different from any other business in the Upstate. The reason is my vision, combined with my degree in architecture, a builder’s license, and 33 years of experience with one-of-akind designs. My projects range from backyard helicopter hangars, indoor riding arenas, gourmet kitchens and exquisite closets to complete renovation of restaurants, law offices, and now Hotel Domestique. I look forward to serving clients with a vision not only for their own homes but for the future of the Upstate.

What is the best part of owning your own business ?

My hero is my dad, Bill Honeycutt. His integrity and ethical principles in business and in his personal life are to be admired. He started this business back in 1953, always keeping the highest standards of a quality product for his customers. Continuing his legacy, Lafayette “Scientific” Cleaners, is important to me. I want him to be proud of how we continue to offer service that guarantees customer satisfaction. I have BIG shoes to fill! My Dad is not just my hero, he’s my inspiration!

The best part of owning my own business is seeing successful results from the products and services we offer our customers. Offering consistent good service and staying on top of what my customers need makes me happy! Watching my business succeed is of course a great reward as well. Don’t get me wrong, running a business isn’t always easy, but working together with my employees as a team/family gives me a feeling of great satisfaction.

What does home mean to you?

Why should people do business with you?

Home to me is Greenville! After living in the Atlanta area for 29 years, I have recently returned and realize just how wonderful it is to live and work in this area. I have had the good fortune to travel the world and see overwhelming sights and cultures, but none of those places gave me the contentment that I feel being back here. I guess I didn’t really appreciate all Greenville had to offer when I left, but I am sure glad I am home.

I feel confident that when people do business with us that they know we will do the best job possible in cleaning their clothing, household and specialty items. Our “Scientific” approach uses the highest quality eco-friendly solvents to make sure fabrics never retain odors and always look bright and fresh. Each item is pre-spotted, hand-pressed and inspected twice before it is returned to our customers in the best possible condition. We guarantee that our customers will be completely satisfied.

How has the Upstate helped you? As a professional, hand-finishing dry cleaners, we are very fortunate to be located here in the Upstate for several reasons. With the strong international presence from all over the world, we see clothing made of the most exquisite fabrics, some with detailed embroidery that requires the utmost care in cleaning. With the many social and cultural events held year round, residents of the Upstate want to look their best, wearing their finest clothes that look better and last longer when professionally cleaned.

Loyal, caring, creative, dependable, fun-loving, honest, passionate What is the small thing that always makes you happy?

Why did you choose the Upstate for your business?

Just playing silly with the ones you love! In the hustle and bustle of today’s crazy world we need to be sure to plan family time. Whether it’s playing patty cakes, making patty cakes or dancing around the kitchen. It’s those moments when laughter fills the air – and your heart – that make you happy just to be alive!

Choosing to live in the Upstate just felt right! Anywhere you go you never meet a stranger and there’s always someone waiting to lend a helping hand! This mindset is the way we have decided to conduct business and exactly the way we want you to feel when you enter our showroom! We may not be making cookies that day, but we’ll certainly offer you unmatched southern hospitality and expert advice!

What advice would you give a young person just starting out in business? Being successful in business is almost like creating your own special recipe! It starts with about 2 cups of education and a gallon of passion! With all the new technology, your mom’s recipe just won’t do! There has to be a tablespoon of tech savvy sophistication and a dash of social networking too! But don’t leave out that pinch of old-school ability to form long-term relationships! The baking time depends on what drives you and how far you want to go … the sky’s the limit!

What is the legacy you would like to leave behind? That people matter! That we’ve worked hard and taken the time to make family, friends and customers feel special. Never allowing them to settle for mediocrity or second best! To treat everyone with kindness and respect…and always greet them with a smile! At the end of the day, it’s all about relationships! People have the conscious choice to make it a good one … or not!

How is your company different from your competition? One thing we do better than anyone in our line of work is listening. It’s not just about a fixture; it’s about helping provide the quality of life they’re trying to accomplish. We’re not just working on a project together; we’re building relationships and dreams. When customers come into our showroom, before you know it, their children are crawling up in our laps like family … priceless!

SEABROOK MARCHANT

President, The Marchant Company, Inc. Conservative, patriotic, dependable, compassionate, trustworthy, friendly, kind, confident

What is the best gift you have ever received?

What made you start your business?

My family – my wife, children and grandchildren. They are truly a gift from God. I am so proud of all of them and treasure the time I spend with them.

Having an entrepreneurial spirit and the desire to start my own business, I wanted something I could put my own signature on. For the past 20 years, I have never doubted that I made the right decision.

Who is your hero? I have to say that I have three heros. My parents, because they taught me how to be successful in life and the importance of family. My other hero is Ronald Reagan, because he was a true conservative who always exuded confidence and optimism and led this nation to its longest period of peacetime prosperity.

What is one thing you have done for the community that you are most proud of? There are two things I have done for the community that I am proud of. I arranged the first meeting between thenMayor Bill Workman and Carl Scheer that led to the eventual construction of the BI-LO Center. I also chaired the committee that hosted the ACC Baseball Tournament during its successful nine-year run in Greenville.

Why should people do business with you? We are a family owned, non-franchised full-service real estate company. Our agents and staff have over 200 years of combined real estate experience and have an unparalleled knowledge of the Upstate market. We have earned a reputation as being honest, dependable, and trustworthy. We are small by design, but consistently rank in the top 10 of all real estate companies in Greenville. This year we celebrate our 20th anniversary and look forward to serving our clients for many more years to come

What is the most challenging part of owning your own business? In today’s ever-changing world of technology, we are constantly challenged to keep up with the changes that affect our business. Controlling expenses is another ongoing challenge as well as making decisions that help us better serve our clients and customers. We have wonderful and loyal agents and staff, and knowing that they depend on me and look to me for leadership is always uppermost on my mind.

What was your first job and how did you get it? From age 13-16, during the summers, I worked for my father at the general store at Caesars Head, SC, where our family has a second home. The first full-time job I had was as an officer in the United States Army, a job that Uncle Sam “gave to me.”

JOYNER COMMERCIAL

Prudential C. Dan Joyner Commercial Real Estate Team Upstate specialists in industrial, retail, office, and multifamily What is your favorite thing about the Upstate? The people. The Upstate is a welcoming place. We often tell our clients, “If you’ll work hard and give back to the community, this community will work hard and give back to you.” You can walk down Main Street in Greenville any evening and hear people speaking five different languages, but you’ll also run into people you have known all your life! The Upstate is made up of polite, good humored, hospitable people who like to get things done and have fun doing it.

What is the best advice you have ever received? The golden rule: treat others as you would like to be treated. It’s amazing how many times people only see one side of an issue. In business, as opposed to sports, “winning” does not have to mean that somebody else loses. This concept can be especially important when negotiating leases, which, in essence, create long-term relationships. We consider ourselves very fortunate to be part of a company with a community-oriented culture that C. Dan Joyner started and his family continues to build upon.

What did you want to be when you grew up? Fireman, policeman, astronaut, teacher, food critic, preacher, comic, artist, TV personality, mayor, sail boat captain, photographer, veterinarian, or super hero. But, we’ve come to the conclusion that there is nothing else we would rather be doing today. We help people. We are creative in what we do. We work on projects that end up being in the news and which may be politically substantive. We eat out a lot. We laugh at ourselves more than most. And, well, we have a golden retriever in the office. 66

How has the Upstate helped you? Our community shapes us, and our community is shaped by us. Some people shop – we see a shopping center and gauge its success. Some go downtown for dinner – we check on renovations to a building we sold last month. Industrial parks, retail development, multifamily projects – the Upstate is woven into the very fabric of our lives. It hasn’t just helped us. It has made us. We are who we are because of what we do and where we do it.

Why should people do business with you? We’re effective. If you are involved with commercial or industrial real estate, then you have needs. We effectively fulfill those needs. It’s irritating when you can’t find space for your business. It’s frustrating to own an empty building. It’s entirely maddening when someone doesn’t call you back. We understand, and we can help. Industrial, retail, office, multifamily – improved or raw land – for your use or as an investment – think Joyner Commercial. We want to earn your business. JP COLLECTION-HOME DÉCOR & GIFTS

Julie Phillips, Owner Compassionate, honest, sensitive, positive personality, nice, leader, creative, humble, funny, extrovert What does home mean to you?

What does your business do best?

Home is my safe haven. It is a place where I can totally unwind and relax. Home is a place I love being with my husband, Mike, and our son, Alex, when he is home from college. It is where we have made our family memories and started our family traditions. No matter what type of day I have had, I can go home and receive a grand welcome from our two precious Cavalier King Charles spaniels and feel loved. Home is my sanctuary.

Customer Service! When you enter our store we are there to help find the right accessory for your home or that perfect gift. We are knowledgeable about our products and can show you different ways to use them. We have a large selection of Bridesmaid and Groomsman gifts as well as lots of items to help you plan a special event or make your party perfect! We will listen to you and promise to help you get exactly what you need!

What advice would you give a young person who would like to start their own business? The best advice I could give someone going into business would be to find or hire a mentor in your field of business. It could be the best money you will ever spend! Mentors can help you learn about all areas of running a business from A to Z and can speak from their own past experiences. There are always challenges that come up and it is great to be able to speak with a professional to get the advice to face those challenges.

What have you done for the community that you are most proud of? The one closest to my heart was a fundraiser I did for the Cancer Society of Greenville County in honor of my Dad, who we lost to cancer in 2012. I sold blankets in the store, like the one I had given my dad to keep him warm during his treatments. I was able to donate $2,500 to the Cancer Society and keep the promise I made to my Dad to do something to thank them for all they did for him.

What is the most challenging part of owning your own business? Staying on budget with your inventory. In the retail business you are not guaranteed a certain amount of revenue each day. You must be prepared for bad weather days, college game season, schools breaks, and slow summer months, which all can affect your budget. You have your projected sales, but if it is a slow day you can get behind on budget very quickly and you will have to constantly find creative ways to increase your sales to get on target by the end of each month.

CLOTHES MAKE THE MAN, LLC. Arthur L. Smith, M.D., Owner

Quietly driven and passionate about reaching my goals What is your favorite thing about the Upstate?

Why should people do business with you?

I have several things that I like about the Upstate. The first thing would be the wonderful people. I’ve lived several places throughout my life, but I don’t think I’ve ever lived in a community more accepting and warm. I also really like the Upstate’s seasonal and moderate weather. The Upstate is also very well positioned between other great cities, including Atlanta, Charlotte and Charleston. Additionally, I really like the spirit of the Upstate in being willing to facilitate starting new businesses and professional opportunities.

People should do business with my company, Clothes Make The Man, for several reasons. No. 1—We strive to offer the absolute highest quality men’s clothing and accessories available not only in the Upstate, but anywhere. We will offer the highest quality with the most competitive prices. No. 2—We will do anything to service our customers. We pride ourselves in “out-servicing” our competition. Whatever your wants and needs are, we will accommodate. If you visit our store, this will be clear.

What made you start your business?

What is the legacy you would like to leave behind?

I have always had a passion for fashion. I think it came natural for me. Both of my parents also loved fashion. When I was a young man, I was very interested in dressing well and usually was the “best dressed man” wherever I was. As a professional person (i.e. neurologist), I was inspired to always have a professional presentation. I recently decided that NOW was the time to pursue a lifelong passion and start my own retail clothing store.

The legacy that I would like to leave behind is multi-faceted. First and foremost, I would like to leave a legacy of respect and kindness for our fellow man regardless of race, religion, politics, or socio-economic status. I would also like to leave a legacy of refusing to let anyone or anything set my limits. Our limitations should only be determined by the extent of our imaginations, and our willingness to do whatever it takes to reach our goals. Last—but not least—always Trust In God.

I would like to be very well established as a Men’s Clothier in the Upstate and beyond. I want to be the “Premier Men’s Clothing Retailer” for in-dividuals, professionals, and corporate clients. I also want to establish my company nationally through my e-commerce division, and have customers from coast to coast. I also aspire to extend the brand to women’s clothing, men’s consignment clothing, stylist and image consulting, and other products and services.

UPSTATE VETERINARY SPECIALISTS

Photography by Lisa Carpenter

Members of our Oncology Team celebrate a chemo “graduation”

We provide advanced veterinary care by referral only What is your favorite thing about the Upstate? Our favorite thing about the Upstate is the people. We have such a diverse population but one thing everyone seems to have in common is that they are so welcoming. We also have a very pet-friendly community and we are happy to be able to play a role in strengthening that human-animal bond. We are also proud to have brought four international awards to the Upstate and help put the area on the map for veterinary excellence.

What is the one small thing that always makes you happy? One thing that always makes us happy is that moment when a client is reunited with their furry family member after a stay at the hospital. Seeing a wagging tail and a smiling owner makes our day. Whether it is after surgery or at a party celebrating the end of chemotherapy, there is nothing more special than those reunions.

What advice would you give a young person just starting out in business? Any person starting out in business needs to know that the most important thing is to do something you’re passionate about, then surround yourself with great people. Our success has been because we have a fabulous team of compassionate people doing what we love to do.

What is the best part of owning your own business? The best part of owning your own business is being able to follow your instincts and focus on those things you feel are most important. We live by the credo “Specialty Medicine, Personal Care” and we get to make sure we live up to that standard every day.

What does your company do best? Upstate Vet Specialists provides the most advanced treatment options for pets in the Upstate. We have the latest cutting-edge technology including CT, MRI, Radiation Therapy, and non-invasive surgery. However, what we do best is take care of each pet as if it were our own. If your family veterinarian sends you to us, we feel that we have been entrusted to take care of someone that is special to them and a family member of yours. That’s a responsibility we take very seriously!

MOBIUS CONSTRUCTION Matt Ruth & Dave Smith, Partners

Conscientious, creative, dependable, diligent, detail-oriented, likeable, knowledgeable What is your favorite thing about the Upstate? Greenville has so much to offer. The geographic diversity is great – we’re right on the edge of the mountains, close enough to the coast for a quick getaway, and the lakes on which we’ve built so many houses are absolutely spectacular. The city has all the advantages of a major city with none of the disadvantages. All of this makes Greenville a great place to live, raise a family, and do business. We enjoy being part of the growth and renovation of Greenville, and becoming friends with the families we do business with.

What does home mean to you? Too often people in our business forget the difference between a house and a home. While we build or renovate houses for people, we help create their homes – where they will live, raise a family, and entertain friends. From design through construction we remind ourselves of that; and while we enjoy putting the pieces of the puzzle together to complete the project, it’s not complete until there are people living, working, and playing in it. It makes us proud to be a part of that process.

How did you get your start? We helped each other build our own homes before formally starting Mobius Construction in 2006. Due to the poor economy, we sought opportunities and capitalized on the renovations market in the city of Greenville and surrounding areas when other people were focusing on making the houses they had into the homes of their dreams. With vast experience in all aspects of construction and an affinity for taking on challenges, renovation work quickly became a core part of our business model.

What is the best part of owning your own business? We’re proud to be part of the community and to be able to see the result of our hard work. There’s no greater reward than having an impact on people’s lives as we build or renovate their homes. Nothing is more satisfying than getting a simple text message saying, “We love our new home.” We get up every day, work hard, and love what we do, and we are looking forward to serving our clients and this community for years to come.

Why should people do business with you? We both come from engineering backgrounds and bring a level of professionalism and respect that is often lacking in the construction business. We always remember our clients will live with the result of our work for years to come. We offer a beautiful finished product showing exceptional attention to detail, while making the experience as smooth and painless as possible for the homeowners.

SERRUS CAPITAL PARTNERS

Photography by Lisa Carpenter

Greenville-based, residential real estate investor and full-service sales & leasing firm What is the legacy you would like to leave behind? Serrus’ mission and core business belief is centered around the principles that the Upstate is a great place to live and grow your roots for generations to come. We strive to invest in neighborhoods by restoring foreclosed or bank-owned homes to a better time when these properties thrived with life. We aspire to leave a legacy where our tenants become buyers in tomorrow’s market, while creating sustainable and sound personal investments with their housing choices.

What would I be surprised to learn about you? People are surprised to hear of a successful real estate business launch in the worst residential real estate period since the great depression. Since 2009, we have purchased over 250 residential properties mainly in the Upstate from local banks and public foreclosure auctions. To manage these properties, we now have a full-time staff of 15 employees and two Upstate locations in Greenville and Spartanburg. In 2012, we were named the 2nd Fastest Growing Company in South Carolina – the ONLY real estate company in the Top 25.

What was your “ah-ha” moment? In 2009, Leighton Cubbage and Steve Mudge saw an opportunity in the struggling housing market to purchase distressed properties and patiently weather the real estate storm by turning the properties into rental homes, and eventually selling off the properties when the market corrected itself. With Steve’s corporate real estate experience at various Fortune 500 firms like Marriott International and Centex Corporation, and Leighton’s success in funding numerous Upstate firms such as CTG, they combined their efforts and strengths to form one of South Carolina’s largest residential real estate funds. 72

How has the Upstate helped you? Serrus Capital Partners is built on the personal relationships that the founders have had in the Upstate since their football playing days at Clemson University in the 1970s. Their list of business partners reads like a “who’s who” of Greenville entrepreneurs and business executives, including local bankers who call on Serrus when they have non-performing assets in need of a professional plan of action. Serrus is poised to continue being a leader in the Upstate real estate market, thanks in part to the help of all of our local partners.

What does your company do best? Purchasing, managing, and disposing of over 250 single family, residential homes is no small feat. Serrus’ team has developed systems to efficiently manage real estate properties in a cost-effective manner for any real estate investor or owner of multiple properties. These systems have continued to let Serrus grow and deliver above market rental rates with almost zero vacancies for Serrus properties, as well as third party owners’ properties as well. Due to this efficiency, Serrus now manages rental properties from Asheville, NC to Columbia, SC for multiple property owners.

COWART AWARDS, INC.

Cheryl Taylor, President & CEO Exceptional service, excellent quality & affordable pricing since 1965 What is your favorite thing about the Upstate?

How has the Upstate helped you?

It is a privilege to be a small business in Greenville, serving the Upstate with awards and recognition. I have lived here all my life and watching Greenville grow has been rewarding. Everywhere I go, I hear people talking about visiting Greenville and how beautiful our city is. I am so thankful I get to live and work here every day!

Many successful companies, organizations, universities, schools, and churches call the Upstate home. We have been privileged to provide quality products to many of them. The tremendous growth of manufacturing and other industries in the Upstate have contributed to the continued success of Cowart Awards during our 48 years in business here.

What is the legacy you would like to leave behind?

What is your company’s mission statement?

I would like to leave a legacy of owning a small business that provided many opportunities to shape lives and help build a better future for my employees. I have had the opportunity to work with so many talented people in different corporations and to volunteer with non-profits across the Upstate. Cowart Awards was recognized as the Awards and Recognition Association’s Retailer of the Year. We were commended for our dedicated community support and volunteer service. That is the legacy I would be proud to leave behind.

Cowart Awards, Inc. is dedicated to being a leader in the awards and Recognition industry by having a staff of Recognition Specialists who are honest, friendly and understand the value of awards and the impact they have on people’s lives. We have a commitment to service, quality and a superior knowledge of the awards and recognition industry. We will stay up-to-date with current technology and continuously improve our processes so that we can ensure we understand and meet our customers’ needs.

How did you get your start? George and Tom Cowart started Cowart Engravers in 1965. They set up shop in the family garage which was located in West Greenville. The business then moved to Laurens Road in 1968, added trophies and changed the name to Cowart Awards. When George and I married in 1970, I would say I married into the trophy business! After working together for over 30 years, George passed away in 2005. Cowart Awards continues as a family business, with my son George Cowart Jr., daughter Erin Hester and brother Raji Ward—serving customers locally in the Upstate, nationally and worldwide.

THE VALET, LLC

Jeffrey Dawkins, Landon Cohen & Terence Dawkins, Partners

Friendly, trustworthy and personable. Dedicated to safe, convenient parking. What does home mean to you? Home always has a direct connection to family, literally and figuratively. We all have an obligation to give back and take care of what we call “home” – whether it’s our hometown, alma mater, or current household. One should have a sense of pride when talking about their home and it’s always fulfilling to make a contribution to rebuilding or strengthening the places and people from which we come.

If you taught a class, what would it be? I would teach art to both children and adults – there’s nothing like getting those creative juices flowing. Ideas expressed in an artistic form often ignite creativity in those around us.

What advice would you give a young person just starting out in business? Read, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. As you begin to apply what you have learned to your business, you’ll see knowledge slowly transform into wisdom. Understand that you’ll always be a student of your respective industry, so continue to read, ask questions, learn and go!

Why did you choose the Upstate for your business? The Upstate, especially Spartanburg, has taken huge steps to grow a community that has traditionally been known as a small town. As our city and its businesses continue to thrive, we knew that valet parking would be the perfect service to cultivate the Southern hospitality that we grew up knowing while providing amenities that are usually seen in metro areas.

Why should people do business with you?

Wendy D. Watkins, RD, LDN, Founder/President

Innovative, smart, warm, entrepreneurial, funny, open, multitasker & fearless Who is your hero?

What is the best part of owning your own business?

No question, my mother has been the inspiration for my life. She taught me to think positively, learn from failures, and turn them into successes. She was a creative person with an interest in everything, and she knew how to have fun. That spirit of adventure and fun did not stop at the kitchen door; she was a wonderful cook who inspired me to become a dietitian, an entrepreneur, and so much more.

Owning my business gives me the opportunity to grow and shape it in ways that meet the needs of my clients. Initially, diet consults involved discussions of healthy foods. Now with Plate 108, I have a dedicated kitchen space where I can demonstrate food preparation, and clients can experience good food firsthand. In addition, Plate 108 serves as a cooking and entertainment venue open to the public through classes and events.

What would I be surprised to learn about you? I was a multitasker before it was cool. I have always been happiest and do my best work when there is more than enough to do. Through Upstate Nutrition Consultants we serve nursing and rehab centers, assisted living homes, and provide nutrition counseling to clients. Plate 108 adds to that multitask continuum, and gives me the opportunity to take teaching about healthy eating to the public in a beautiful setting while making it fun.

How is your business different from your competition? There is no other cooking venue you can attend that pairs a licensed Registered Dietitian with a chef. We tackle eating well, with eating right infusing culinary arts, with nutrition to give folks a full food experience!

What made you start your business? Leaving a job that I thought I would retire from and having a new baby made me think outside the box. Flexibility and paying the bills were key components in designing my future. As an independent dietary consultant, I was able to meet those goals. I had a talent for management and before long, dietary consultants were working for me. Having my own business has allowed me to change with the industry, and looking back I could not be happier with the results.

RENEW CREW Keith Drew, Owner

Friendly, focused, customer-driven, dedicated, responsive, motivated What is your favorite thing about the Upstate?

What does your company do best?

My wife and I were looking to move to the South, possibly Asheville or Charleston. Someone told us to be sure to stop in Greenville and when we did, it was love at first sight! The small-town atmosphere with the big-city feel, near the mountains and not far from the beach, the ambiance and the great restaurants and live music on Main Street on Thursday and Friday nights! It felt so European and we immediately knew it was our new home.

Renew Crew cleans, restores and preserves all outdoor hard surfaces. We are the local source for gutter, siding, patio and deck cleaning in the Greenville area. Our goal is to offer excellent personal service while delivering a cleaner clean, a greener clean and a longer lasting clean—all without risking damage to your surfaces. We have a unique, three-step process which uses our proprietary cleansing, staining and sealing products. We offer a better way to clean and protect virtually all exterior surfaces.

What would we be surprised to learn about you? I guess it might be a surprise to find out that I am an absolute soccer fanatic! Growing up in England, I played on two club soccer teams. Unfortunately, I was not good enough to play in the pros, but I am the world’s biggest fan of England’s Tottenham Hotspurs and follow them religiously. There is not a single weekend that goes by that I am not firmly planted in front of the television watching soccer. Soccer is my passion, and this year my team is having their best season in many years. Go Spurs!

What is the best part of owning your own business? I am a born salesman! I get an incredible rush from seeing my business grow and flourish. The thrill of any sale, no matter the size, never wanes and is the ultimate reward for the time, energy and commitment that it takes to run a successful business. Hiring good people, watching them learn and grow, and helping them succeed is another reward. I can’t imagine ever working for anyone but myself!

MOSQUITO SQUAD Keith Drew, Owner

Caring, friendly, customer driven, dynamic, reliable, determined What is the best gift you have ever received? The best gift I ever received was 6 Deep Dish Pizzas from Lou Malnati’s Restaurant in Chicago. It was a Valentine’s Day gift from my wife, Cristina, and it’s the best pizza in the world. We used to eat it when we lived in Chicago and I can honestly say that I couldn’t have enjoyed anything more! I hope it becomes a Valentine’s Day tradition!

How did you get your start in business? In the late ‘80s, I was at a crossroads in my life and knew that I wanted to make some changes. I had a young family and wanted stability. I made the bold decision to go into business for myself and started a steel rule cutting die business in Chicago. After 20 years in Chicago we wanted to live somewhere warmer, so my wife and I relocated to Greenville and I decided to go back into business for myself. The opportunity to purchase Mosquito Squad came my way and I grabbed it!

Who is your hero? My hero is Margaret Thatcher. I was born and raised in London; I remember back in the 70s, England was a turbulent country, facing many problems, financially and otherwise. Margaret Thatcher was a great stabilizer, a strong woman and a great leader who had the courage to stand up for what she believed was right for her beloved country and mine.

What advice would you give a young person just starting out in business? If I were to give advice to any young person starting out it would be this: It doesn’t matter what type of business you are in, you have got to be a salesman! It is all about marketing and selling … you have to not only sell your business to potential customers, but you have to sell yourself as well. You can’t wait for people to find you; you have to go out and find your customers by advertising, marketing and selling.

Why should people do business with you? I sincerely believe that Mosquito Squad is the absolute best service of its kind not just in the Upstate, but in the industry itself. We are experts in mosquito management and eradication. Our excellent service continuously satisfies our loyal customers … many of whom have told us, “We have tried the rest, but we came back to the best!” We are proud of our excellent reputation and work hard to assure that never changes. No bugs, no bites, no kidding!

PAPA MURPHY’S TAKE ‘N’ BAKE PIZZA

Austin Wilson, Director of Operations & Maria Ahn-Wilson, Owner

The Best Pizza Chain in America What is the best gift you have ever received? Austin: The best gifts I have received were my two children, Ava and Mason. They have influenced me in ways I could never have imagined. They inspire me to look for ways to make a positive difference for their futures – and to lead them by my example. My children have taught me not to take myself too seriously, to live more spontaneously and to start each day with enthusiasm!

What is one small thing that always makes you happy? Maria: I love receiving a card or handwritten note from family or friends. It means so much to know that someone has taken the time to choose the perfect card for me or to write a letter of thanks for something I have done … this always makes me happy!

What have you done for the community that you are most proud of? Maria: Through Comfort Keepers, the home care company I opened in 2001, I have had the privilege of helping many seniors live independent lives in the comfort of their own homes. It is rewarding to provide care for those who are recovering from an illness, and to support families who are trying to balance children, job responsibilities and care of aging parents.

Where would you like to be in 5 years? 10 years? In five years, we hope to own and operate 15 Papa Murphy’s locations throughout the Upstate. In 10 years we hope to own and operate over 30 locations throughout the Southeast. If we could do that, in 10 years we would have created at least 200 jobs in South Carolina, which would be a wonderful way of helping the people in the Upstate. Papa Murphy’s has been a great venture for us, and we hope to share that with the place we call home.

What advice would you give a young person just starting out in business? Maria: I would advise young people to be

willing to start at the bottom and learn the business. Ask questions! This will show your enthusiasm and humility. Accept advice and input from your family, friends and peers. They may recognize your strengths and weaknesses before you do. Learn to graciously accept criticism. Don’t let fear of failure hold you back … believe that you and your company will be successful. This confidence is contagious! And lastly, be sure to surround yourself with great people!

Why did you choose the Upstate for your business? Austin: We chose to do business in Greenville because we wanted to bring the Papa Murphy’s Take and Bake pizza concept to the community we know and love. We were eager to participate in the local economy … create jobs, bring high quality, fresh affordable meals to busy families in our area and partner with civic organizations in their fundraising efforts. Maria and I have achieved our goals and look forward to many more years of “serving” our hometown.

What does your company do best? Papa Murphy’s was voted “The country’s best pizza chain” by Zagat and Consumer Reports. We make our own dough, shred cheeses, and chop veggies every day from local vendors. Our business model is “20% more for 20% less.” Because we have less overhead, we can put our money into the quality of the food, and keep the pricing below the competition. The difference with Papa Murphy’s is clear after the first bite. It really is a difference you can taste!

PAISLEY & PAPER Marty & Bryan Garrison, Owners

Gifts, invitations & paper products with a colorful flair! What is the best gift you have ever received? Given?

If you taught a class, what would it be?

It’s not a single gift but the meaning behind each gift! A slogan we created and have painted on our store wall is, “Happiness isn’t found in the things you possess, but in what you have the kindness to give away!” Helping a customer make a gift choice, the laughs we hear over the greeting cards, or the satisfaction we receive in helping word a wedding shower invitation … makes us smile inside! Giving or receiving a gift makes anyone happy … and we love being a part of that.

If we taught a class it would be written word etiquette. Specifically, the social graces of action and reaction to the written note, party invitation, or any other correspondence in the maze of social events and holidays.

How did you get your start? The idea came from sitting around the dinner table with good friends talking about the closures of gift and paper stores and the limited offerings for unique invitations, gifts, and party supplies. We offer a few of the best products from different vendors, and a lot of new ideas, too. The most frequent comment we get is, “We love your store!” Our colorful store is a fun place and it should be! Our shoppers are people giving gifts, conveying a sentiment, or throwing a party!

How is your business different from your competition? Paisley & Paper offers gift wrap, greeting cards, invitations, fine and artisan paper, ribbon, party supplies, school supplies, unique gifts, and much, much more … BUT we are not part of the “chain gang” of chain store big box retailers that buy identical mass-produced products! We are unique, local, born and raised Greenville people who want to keep on doing business in our community for generations!

What is the best part of owning your own business? The best part of owning our own business is the freedom it allows … the freedom to focus on what we like and what we are passionate about. We buy what inspires us … but we keep a suggestion notebook on the checkout counter at all times for client input! We are both lifelong Greenville residents and devoted to this area. We love to add our creative touch to a great event or idea and we have the freedom to do that every day. 80

AESTHETIC CENTER FOR BREAST & COSMETIC SURGERY, PA Dr. Sutton Graham II, MD

Reputation for quality results, personal caring & great staff What is the best gift you have ever received?

What would you do if you weren’t in your present occupation?

Several years ago one of our patients came in for a follow-up visit. She had undergone a mastectomy for breast cancer, and we reconstructed the missing breast using her tummy skin and fat. She had already showed my nurse her surprise, and when I joined them in the exam room, our patient opened her robe to reveal a paper sign hung with a string around her neck: “Handcrafted By Dr. Graham.” The sign is a cherished keepsake.

Graduating high school I couldn’t have imagined what my life would be like today. Most likely I would have ended up in another surgical specialty (maybe pediatric surgery). Outside of medicine, the possibilities are less certain: architecture, photography, adventure travel, landscaping / commercial / industrial design, realty, marketing, or education. Since change is one thing we can count on in life, perhaps I should have given this more thought.

What is one small thing that always makes you happy?

Why should people do business with you?

Sunrise. My work often has me up and going to the office or hospital before the sun comes out. However, I am frequently delighted by the sun creeping up toward the horizon, rays piercing through scattered, low morning clouds. A photograph wouldn’t do it justice. The warm, rich colors are amazing, and most people aren’t out in time to enjoy the sight.

We have a unique relationship with our patients. We understand each patient chooses us, and trusts us with a very important part of their body (ie. face, breast or tummy). We don’t take that lightly. We appreciate, honor and respect that trust. Cosmetic plastic surgery is one of the few fields of medicine where the doctor is directly responsible to the patient, rather than an outsider such as an insurance company, hospital administration or medical practice group. I can only say “thank you” to each of our patients.

What advice would you give a young person just starting out in business?

Photography by Lisa Carpenter

Expect to get up each day and enjoy your work, eventually. My simplistic view is you should start with a plan, work the plan, and be open to new opportunities and ideas. In reality, life will not be that simple, but accept the challenges without resentment. Look for ways to surmount those challenges, then use that experience to help others succeed, build something new, and progress to a new stage of your own life.

MAST GENERAL STORE

Mary Nase, Manager Career oriented, conservative, observant, honest, direct, creative, diligent

What is your favorite thing about the Upstate?

What would I be surprised to learn about you?

Greenville! I love this city and being part of the community. I moved to the Upstate in 1993. I have watched the downtown area grow and expand but retain its charm and small-town feel. I think Mast General Store has contributed greatly to that growth and I am delighted to be a part of it.

I was born in Estonia, where my parents were both veterinarians. When I was five, we escaped to Germany to avoid the Communist takeover of Estonia and the Red Cross helped us to find a sponsor in the United States! We were sponsored by a church in Marion, NC, since they were in need of veterinarians. This is an important part of who I am, and has made me truly appreciate being an American citizen and the opportunities it has afforded my family and me.

What was your first job, and how did you get it? My first job was with Thalhimers Department Store in Richmond,Virginia. I was in their Management Training Program, became an assistant buyer, buyer and then moved into management. I was a business major at Wake Forest University and was recruited when Thalhimers visited the school looking for new graduates entering the workforce. I have been in retail for my entire career, moved around a lot, and managing Mast General Store has been the best highlight.

What would you do if you weren’t in your present occupation? I would probably be in the antique business. When I lived in Dayton, Ohio, a dear friend introduced me to the world of antiques. When I got married, I found my husband also loved antiques. I have stopped buying for now, but I still really like to look! I think that is one reason I love working for Mast Store since “the past” is valued and so much an integral part of our culture.

What does your company do best? We are very proud to be celebrating the 10th anniversary of our Greenville store. Since the first Mast General Store opened in 1883 in Valle Crucis, N.C, we have been dedicated to making shopping in our stores a pleasurable experience. We take pride in selling quality goods, offered at fair prices. When you combine that with our unique environment, knowledgeable sales staff, and old fashioned friendly customer service, Mast Store is more than just a place to shop … it is a destination!

What is the one small thing that always makes you happy? I am really happy when I am out in the store meeting and talking to our customers. One of the great things about being in downtown Greenville is that about 60-70% of our customers are tourists or just passing through. I have met so many people from so many different places and it makes me happy to see the reaction on their faces when they enter our doors. I can see that they like what they see here, and can’t wait to look around. We constantly hear “I just love this store!”

Photography by carol boone stewart

What did you want to be when you grew up? I am not really sure what I wanted to be when I grew up, but I do know that I wanted to be in New York City! I wanted to live in a high rise building on the very top floor, with windows from ceiling to floor all around so that I could look out onto the city while sitting on my couches … couches with lots and lots of pillows!

WORD PLAY PEDIATRIC THERAPIES

Photography by Lisa Carpenter

Lisa Baumhofer & Amy Reynolds, business partners, sisters, speech pathologists Child-friendly therapy, natural environment, therapist-owned & family-oriented What is the most rewarding experience you’ve ever had?

Why did you choose the Upstate for your business?

Working with kids at Word Play allows for rewarding experiences to happen every day. Our caring therapists love watching the progress with their clients and their families. There is nothing like being in the room when a child takes a first step, utters a first word, or achieves a goal that was previously thought to be unattainable. Small miracles happen every day around here, and it never gets old!

Lisa and Amy were both born in South Carolina, so by settling in the Upstate, they returned to their roots. Lisa went to Clemson and eventually settled in Greenville. Amy attended UNC and moved to Greenville to start Word Play. They chose the Upstate because of its family-friendly environment. People come from all over to live in the Upstate, which has allowed us to build a strong, diverse team of therapists. The Upstate has been very good to us!

What is your favorite childhood memory?

Why should people do business with you?

Lisa Baumhofer and Amy Reynolds are business partners and sisters. They were military brats and moved almost every two years. As such, Amy and Lisa were each other’s “always friend.” Their favorite activity growing up was playing school. Being the oldest, Lisa was almost always the teacher, and Amy was the eager-to-please student. It was early training for a job they would both love someday.

Word Play is a unique family-owned business with an established reputation of excellent play-based therapy with phenomenal therapists. We believe children learn best through play and that working hard can be lots of fun. Our therapists are masters-level, certified therapists who make the lives of the families we serve even brighter. We are always looking to add to our energetic team. We pride ourselves on quality therapy with proven results by the best therapists in the Upstate!

How did you get your start? Word Play has been in business for ten years. Prior to that, Lisa and Amy worked as Speech Pathologists in various settings including hospitals, homes, schools, and daycares. When we started Word Play, there weren’t many companies doing natural environment therapy where the therapist goes to the child to provide services. We found a niche, and Word Play grew into what it is today. Word Play’s primary mission remains the same: to improve the lives of our clients and their families through exceptional, unique, and fun therapy. 86

PEDAL CHIC, LLC

Robin L. Bylenga, Owner Mom, enthusiastic, compassionate, tenacious, athletic, intelligent, sociable, networker What is your favorite thing about the Upstate? In 1989, I moved to Greenville to attend graduate school at Clemson. I am so proud of how Greenville has evolved into such a thriving, beautiful place to live, raise children, and own a business. We are incredibly lucky to live in such a progressive city with so many amenities: a vibrant downtown, the Swamp Rabbit Trail, beautiful parks, great restaurants, the arts and excellent schools.

What is the legacy you would like to leave behind? Within the cycling industry, I hope that Pedal Chic is paving the way for other women to open shops, learn to enjoy the sport and art of cycling and to get their children back on bicycles. We spend way too much time in sedentary activities. The most important legacy is for my children; of course, I would like to leave them with a successful business, but I also hope I have taught them the value of hard work, dedication, integrity and compassion for others.

It is indeed life-changing to create a vision, see it come to fruition and have others appreciate and enjoy it. To have a business that changes lives, builds relationships (and friendships) and positively impacts the community is an amazing blessing. We have a family atmosphere which we all love and we have so much fun! And as a mom, it’s nice to be able to be there for my kids when they have special moments.

What does your company do best? We are the #1 bike shop for women in the nation! We listen to our customers. We try very hard to help our customers feel comfortable, make educated decisions and RIDE the bikes they purchase. We provide a myriad of rides and events for all types of bicyclists to build community, encourage movement and family activity. We have an amazing staff and are proud of our customer service, excellence in maintenance and cutting-edge/fashionable product selection. You must come in and see for yourself!

What was your “ah-ha” moment? I was on a family vacation and I received an email from the Greenville Spinners announcing “the new women’s specific” ... couldn’t open the rest of the email! I thought someone had beaten me to the punch of opening the first women’s-centric store. When I finally did get the entire email, the announcement was regarding the women’s specific ride group – GS Elan Women’s Cycling. I knew right then and there that it was time to follow my dream and open Pedal Chic!

J. MARC DESIGNS Marc Schreckengost, Owner Creative, fun, classic, inventive, proactive, knowledgeable, conscientious & modest What is your favorite thing about the Upstate? The Upstate is a great area to live. We are close to so many attractions, cities, and outdoor activities. It is a beautiful area that is inspiring for the easy lifestyle in the Upstate area. There are so many wonderful people in our area which makes it a pleasure to have an interior design business in the Upstate.

What does home mean to you? Home is sanctuary. Home is the backdrop for what goes on in everyone’s daily life. Being comfortable by yourself or inviting large gatherings to entertain. It is a place to show our creative individual style. Where we can be ourselves, relax, and have memories. There should be a sense of warmth and intimacy in every room so people can enjoy and be themselves.

What made you start your business? It was always in my nature to create things that were design oriented. I was drawing scaled blueprints at an early age, exterior, interior and landscape designs. Very interested in how all the many facets of design come together and build on each other. Helping neighbors recreate new rooms by moving around furniture and accessories. Knowing I had a design eye. This gives an understanding of mechanical and finished products. Working together this Helps clients interpret and makes a reality of their dream home or office space.

What is the best part of owning your own business? The process of working with clients on each project. Being creative and detailed in thinking. This helps clients with electrical, paint, wallpaper, furnishings and accessories to make each space be their individual style. It is the hunt of finding each key piece to make every room a success. Each day is never routine and typical. As a designer you discover new things each day that can be an option for the space you are working on.

What is your company’s mission statement? My mission statement is, designs for your lifestyle. Each person has their own taste, aesthetic, and style. Taking information through conversations in which you find what is the style, practicality and function for each client. Giving the client a beautiful end result that they can live in comfortably, to share with family and friends. We are all different and our homes should be a reflection of that.

FIBRENEW UPSTATE

Lynn and Rick Halpin, Owners Rick: ethical, determined, hardworking, skilled Lynn: vivacious, conscientious, self-motivated, organized What is the most rewarding experience you have ever had?

What made you start your business?

Moving to Melbourne, Australia with two school-age children meant continuance of everyday life–like school projects. It also meant experiencing oddities, like Christmas and New Year’s in summer, neighborhood walks along the Yarra River spent koala spotting and listening for the kookabura’s laugh at dusk, not to mention learning to drive on the left side of the road. In our three years there, thrills ran the gamut from snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef to crossing the Tasman Sea for an adventure in Tasmania.

First and foremost, a desire to return to the Upstate for our eventual retirement, coupled with the weariness of Rick’s constant travel in the overseeing of nine manufacturing sites in five states and China. Rick’s technical and operational background in textiles with color, dyeing and finishing expertise, alongside Lynn’s attention to detail, office management and marketing experience, make for very complementary business skill sets. Perhaps most important are our combined efforts to remain personable and achieve a high level of customer satisfaction in a timely fashion.

What is the bravest thing you’ve ever done? Aside from moving to the other side of the world, our bravest feat would be making the decision to leave corporate America and go into business for ourselves, with all of the associated risks and uncertainties therein. Yet, in 2009 we remained steadfast, trusting in our gut instincts and extensive soul searching, along with our methodical approach in evaluating potential business opportunities, bravely deciding to move ourselves back to the Upstate after 15 years to become the first Fibrenew franchise owners in the state.

What is the best part of owning your own business? A home-based office and workshop, with available mobile services, is a great luxury. And, while it can sometimes be trying, working and being together daily after 30+ years is a perk – most days! There is also comfort in being part of a family-oriented, international franchise with great corporate support, along with world-class training and the use of state-of-the-art proprietary products. And there is strength in knowing we are the best trained leather technicians within the markets we serve.

What does your company do best? We are committed to providing high-quality services that add value and usable life function to personal possessions and business capital investments. We repair, restore and re-dye leather residential and business furnishings, as well as vehicle interiors. We replace vinyl in medical and dental offices, hospitals, malls, hotels and restaurants. Our restorations provide alternative “green” options to items that might otherwise be discarded before their time– at a fraction of their current replacement cost. Additionally, we offer certified, professional carpet and upholstery cleaning services.

MONTESSORI SCHOOL OF GREENVILLE Robin R. Bylenga, Owner/Director

Energetic, enthusiastic, empathetic, and always willing to learn! What is your favorite thing about the Upstate?

How did you get your start?

It’s got to be the people! At school there are families from around the world: Latin America, India, Europe, Asia, and North American transplants from all over the U.S. We also have a few life-long residents of Greenville! All this creates a wonderfully rich culture where we learn from each other. Everyone has a unique story of why he is here. The commonalities are that everyone loves our school and living in the Upstate!

Ours is a family-run school founded in 1970 by my in-laws, Norma and Peter Bylenga. Having been a reading volunteer, I loved the moment when a child could truly read, so when we settled in Greenville I knew I wanted to help educate children. I assisted in the classroom and apprenticed alongside Norma for five years until her retirement. My business background coupled with that experience and daily education from the children, parents and staff, keep me always learning and improving the school.

What makes you laugh? When you work with children there are plenty of comedic moments. Each one of our little people has a distinct character that comes shining through every day and often there are some rather funny results. It can be the outfit they chose for themselves that morning, the interpretation of the picture they just painted, or the way they describe the weekend’s activities which often cause a giggle. Children are quite observant and their epiphanies and insights are by turns inspiring and hilarious!

How has the Upstate helped you? It may sound unusual but it is a great place to experience the world without leaving your own backyard. The diversity is incredible. One of the wonderful qualities about all the international families converging on the Upstate is that they are already familiar with the Montessori education since it is practiced worldwide. The Upstate is such a great place to raise a family and the Montessori education is a natural connection for so many families whether they are local or international. 90

What makes you different from the competition? There is no trademark for a Montessori school. Each is unique. We hire the finest teachers. Tenure averages over 16 years. Some of the parents were children themselves in our school. We have seen our students go on to prestigious universities such as Duke, MIT, Emory, some on full scholarships. In our 40-plus years, we have educated people with a passion for excelling in their field of expertise and giving back to their communities–as doctors, attorneys, biomedical statisticians, artists–doing what interests them most.

CRAWLEY’S PARTY SERVICES Roland Crawley, Owner & Head Bartender

Trustworthy, efficient, honest, generous, friendly, social, & service oriented How did you start your business? My older brother had a party service business and when one of his bartenders did not show up for a party, I filled in for him. I tended bar for many weddings, parties and corporate events on a part-time basis. When I was laid off from my full-time job, I knew that it was time to start my own party service business. My business has grown and I have added employees who I have trained to offer the highest level of service possible.

What is the best gift you have ever received?

Photography by Related Images Photography

The best gift I have ever received was a compliment from two young men who I had known since they were kids. One is now a minister and the other a college student. They thanked me for being a positive influence on their lives. They said watching me work hard, make good decisions, dress neatly, and help others, helped them to make good decisions in their own lives. The older I get the more I realize the value of “living a good life!” What a gift!

Who is your hero? My mother is my hero. She is the strongest woman I have ever known. As a single parent she instilled strong values and work ethics in all three of her children. She taught us to be responsible men. She worked as a housekeeper and then ran a café, always doing her best to serve her customers. I guess I got the gift of serving and providing for the needs of others from her, and I am so thankful to her for that gift.

If you could teach a class, what would it be? I have had many friends who have battled addiction and I have counseled them with love and understanding. I would love to be able to reach out to others in my community in that way. I can be a friend to those who need me, and help them deal with daily concerns and hopefully help them solve problems, and learn to be accountable for their own actions.

Why should people do business with you?

COX PHOTOGRAPHY.NET Patrick Cox, Master Photographer

Innovative, designer, artist, experienced, reliable, perfectionist, loyal, servant What is the best gift you have ever received?

How did you get your start?

There is no greater gift than having the chance to be a father. I have two children. I cherish every moment I spend with them. I especially love what we call our “family snuggle time.” Before bedtime we all pile up in the bed and watch a movie together. Children grow up so fast. This fact makes me focus on the important things. I have rearranged my life to be with them. My wife and children are my priority.

I had been making photographs for many years. From photographs of my travels, to children and weddings, I seemed to enjoy the diversity. Our first store was in the back of a dress shop in Simpsonville. Later, we opened a second store. A prominent Greenville photographer advised me “not to come to Greenville.” When I heard his words, I knew this was our next step. Now, our studio is on Augusta in Greenville’s West End in the heart of the booming arts district. We love it here!

What does home mean to you? Home is being with my family. For me, home is not a place. Home is wherever and whenever my family is together. When our house is empty and my wife and children are not there, it is just “a house.” “Home” starts when they all come through the door. We sit at the table for dinner every night. Being together is the main thing.

What was your “ah-ha” moment? My “ah-ha” moment was a result of 9-11. As an engineer for a large company I traveled all over the world. I was in Boston on business when the tragedy occurred and was trying to return home. We rented a car and drove back to Greenville. My wife and I agreed that my traveling days were over and it would be the perfect time to start our own photography business. With a bit of luck and a ton of hard work we are still here today.

92

What does your company do best? We specialize in making photographs of people, places and things. From commercial work for Disney and National Geographic to weddings and children, we make photographs that are relevant and meaningful. I believe what makes a great photograph is you. Many people are pleasantly surprised when they realize our photography sessions are not a series of pre-scripted poses. It is a dialog between us, which helps us document you in a pure and relaxed way. You are beautiful, you are important; you are what make our business.
