Bringing the Record-breaking coverage airs Games on network, Charter cable and online platforms

to Life he 2008 Summer Olympics get under way today in Beijing, China … and armchair athletes are eagerly anticipating their favorite sports. Watching the Games promises to be an endurance event in and of itself, as NBC Universal has scheduled an unprecedented 3,600 hours of coverage. This includes the most live play – 75 percent in all – across the most platforms, of any Summer Olympics in history. “Many of the biggest events will be broadcast live and in prime time,” notes Geoff Hart, sports director

at WYFF, explaining this is possible due to the 12-hour time difference between the Upstate and Beijing; a morning competition in the Olympics’ time zone can air, as it takes place, during the choicest viewing hours here at home. “This certainly adds to the excitement.” In addition to high-definition broadcasts on seven networks all carried by Charter Communications – NBC, USA, MSNBC, CNBC, Oxygen, Telemundo and Universal HD – there’s extensive online coverage at NBCOlympics.com, including live streaming video and on-demand highlights and replays. Fans have access to every one of the 34 Olympic sports.

LOCAL STARS SHINE Though the Games are half a world away, some local flavor is spicing up the competition. Look for two Clemson University standouts – Shawn Crawford and Travis Padgett – on Team USA’s Track & Field squad. [ C O N T I N U E D O N PAG E 2 ]

national championships and professional victories to his credit. An eleven-time Tour de France veteran, Hincapie is the only teammate to have assisted Lance Armstrong in all seven of his TDF victories. Adding splash to Team USA Swimming is Scott Spann Jr., son of former Greenvillian Scott Spann Sr. and grandson of Landrum resident Don Spann. Though Scott Sr. set several world and American records in the pool, the U.S. boycott of the Moscow Games dashed his own hopes for an Olympic gold; now, he’s cheering as his son heads to Beijing to compete in the 200m breaststroke with a qualifying time that’s the second-fastest ever by an American. (Now 20 and a student the University of Texas, Scott Jr. still holds the 10-and-under national record for the 100-meter breaststroke). Watch WYFF Channel 4’s “Olympic Zone” for spots on these local hopefuls and other area athletes.

Crawford, a Tiger star from 1997-2000, is competing in the 200m dash. This is the event that earned him Olympic gold in Athens, where he also won a silver medal with the 4x100m relay team and just missed a third medal after finishing fourth place in the 100m dash. While at Clemson, Crawford was a three-time NCAA champion in the 200m dash. Noted for on-the-track antics, he once raced a zebra and a giraffe in the 100m on FOX’s “Man vs. Beast.” Padgett, currently a junior at Clemson, makes his Olympic debut as a member of the 4x100m relay team as well as first alternate in the 100m dash. A six-time All-American, he was 2007 NCAA indoor champion in the 60m dash. Padgett has also claimed three ACC championships and two NCAA East Region championships in the 100m dash; he ranks first in Clemson history in the 100m and is the NCAA record-holder in that event as well. Away from track and field, Greenville’s favorite cyclist is hitting the road in Beijing. George Hincapie – who made his Olympic debut in 1992 at the age of 18 – now has the distinction of being the only five-time Olympic cyclist in U.S. history. Recognized as America’s top classics rider, Hincapie has numerous world championships, [ C O N T I N U E D F R O M PAG E 1 ]

COOKING OVER THE OLYMPIC FLAME Adam Fox is prepped for an exciting marathon session… in the kitchen, that is. The local chef leapt at the chance to cook in Beijing’s Olympic Village, a pipe dream made possible because his employer, Aramark, has catered the Games since 1968. The food service giant will serve 3.5 million meals over the 17-day event, with dishes prepared by Aramark chefs from the 18 countries where the company has operations. This massive undertaking provides healthy fuel not only for the athletes but also coaches, officials, media and other participants. Fox, whose day job is sous chef for Aramark’s catering service at Furman University, applied for the Olympics assignment so he could experience first-hand the excitement of being amidst the best athletes in the world. In addition to learning a little Chinese, he studied the customs and cultures of other countries to be sure his customer service is worthy of a gold medal.

MORE INTERESTING

• Led by coach “Jenny” Lang Ping – one of the most recognizable celebrities in China dating back to her days as the star of China’s gold medal winning team in 1994 – a resurgent USA Women’s Volleyball Team will play in its third match against Venezuela. • Don’t miss triple world champion Tyson Gay, who ran the fastest 100m under any conditions (9.68) at the USA Olympic Trials, as he pursues the title of “World’s Fastest Man” in the 100m.

Call it “A Race for the Ages”: 41-year-old mother and American record-holder Dara Torres vies for the title of “Fastest Woman in the Water” against a pair of Aussies whose combined ages are less than her 41 years: world record-holder (and favorite) Libby Trickett is 23, and teenage sensation Cate Campbell is 16.

• Teenage track cycling prodigy Taylor Phinney has had two clear cycling role models to emulate: his father, Davis, was the first American to win a stage of the Tour de France and his mother, Connie Carpenter-Phinney, won the first Olympic women’s road race in Los Angeles in 1984. The next chapter for the Phinney family: Taylor chases a medal in the men’s individual pursuit final.

SUNDAY, AUG. 24 – DAY 16

• Who’s the “World’s Greatest Athlete?” It just may be reigning Olympic and world champion Roman Sebrle of the Czech Republic, who will face a strong challenge from his good friend and Athens silver medalist Bryan Clay in Day 1 of the two-day decathlon competition.

Noon – 4:00 p.m. Call the new USA Men’s Basketball Team, the “Redeem Team”. It’s been eight years since a USA Men’s Basketball Team has won Olympic or world championship gold, and this team has been specifically constructed to redeem those losses and return America to the top of the international basketball order. Led by the legendary Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, this roster, featuring reigning NBA MVP Kobe Bryant and Cavs superstar LeBron James, is perhaps the most talented, exciting and determined USA men’s basketball team assembled since Larry, Magic and Michael formed the core of the original Barcelona Dream Team in 1992.

• For the latest Olympic TV schedule and information, go to NBCOlympics.com

Boxing – Six Gold Medal Finals Men’s Water Polo – Gold Medal Match Gymnastics – Rhythmic Group Gold Medal Final 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. Men’s Volleyball – Gold Medal Match Closing Ceremony At the Closing Ceremony, it’s celebration time for the athletes, and the torch will be passed to London for the 2012 Summer Games. China’s flair for the spectacular in its approach to these Olympics promises to make the Beijing Closing Ceremony one of the grandest in history.

• One of the new additions to the Olympic program is marathon swimming, a grueling 10-kilometer (6.2 mile) open water race. The lone American entrant is Mark Warkentin, a 28-yearold from Santa Barbara, California, who’s the son of a former national decathlon champion. • Think of it as the roller derby of bikes. BMX racing is one of the new events at the Olympics – an all-out, full-contact, eight-man race through a twisting course with plenty of jumps.
