FOCUS ON PHILANTHROPY Charter Communications gives generously to local community Tuning in to the community is all in a day’s work at Charter Communications. The company offers the Upstate’s most reliable cable, high-speed Internet and home telephone service, of course; but what truly sets them apart is a dedicated focus on philanthropy. “Corporate citizenship is a core value at Charter,” according to Brooke Sinclair, director of sales and marketing. “We work to take an active role in social, environmental and community concerns that make a difference in the lives of others.” Thus, Charter provides abundant financial support as well as in-kind donations to a diverse array of civic and charitable endeavors in the Upstate, with major sponsorships of events such as a CarolinaClemson Pep Rally benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters, Larkin’s Rhythm on the River/ Rescue the Rhythm benefiting public middle school music programs, Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and Let There Be Mom, to name a few. The beneficiaries list is intentionally eclectic – indeed, Sinclair says, the company doesn’t want to limit corporate giving with any pre-set parameters. “We focus on issues of all kinds, issues that are important to all people,” she explains. “It’s important to us to be involved in a wide range of organizations, to give back in as many ways as possible.” This community is diverse, so Charter’s philanthropy is, too. “We want to touch everybody,” Sinclair says. Charter’s 600-plus local employees are fully engaged in the company’s “Good Neighbor” philosophy, too. They’re trained to be cooperative, helpful, trustworthy and resourceful when filling orders, processing requests and/or installing services, but such traits extend far beyond the office as these caring professionals donate thousands of hours to improving the community in which they live and work. Charter fosters employees’ individual voluntarism by promoting their efforts with spotlights in the corporate newsletter as well as rewarding outstanding outreach

Employees serve causes such as medical research, affordable housing, poverty relief and education, while collective efforts have ranged from hosting food drives to playing in charity golf tournaments to landscaping at a local youth center. “Our Good Neighbor program encourages all employees to find ways to give back to the community,” Sinclair says. “We want them to participate in organizations that are meaningful to them.” In addition, Charter provides cable and Internet services to all public schools in its service areas. “It has always been Charter’s philosophy to be a positive participant in the communities we serve,” Sinclair says, emphasizing Charter’s commitment to giving back to the people who keep the company in business. “It’s our way of saying ‘Thank You!’”

IN a large bowl, add the butter and sugar and cream together with a hand mixer. Add the eggs and vanilla extract to the creamed mixture and mix until combined. In a medium bowl, mix the cocoa powder, flour, baking soda, and salt. Slowly add the dry ingredients and continue mixing until incorporated. ROLL the dough into 2 logs that are about 2-inches high and 1-foot long. Wrap them in waxed paper and place in the refrigerator for 2 hours. PREHEAT oven to 350 degrees F. ONCE thoroughly chilled, slice the cookies into 1/2-inch thick rounds and cover with sanding sugar. Place on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet and bake for 10 minutes. MOVE to a wire rack to cool.

1 pkg. (8 squares) BAKER’S Semi-Sweet Chocolate, melted, slightly cooled 1/4 tsp. peppermint extract 1 sleeve RITZ Crackers (36 crackers) 1 candy cane (6-inch), crushed MIX chocolate and extract. DIP crackers in chocolate, turning to completely coat each cracker. Carefully scrape off excess chocolate. Place crackers in single layer on waxed paper-covered baking sheets; sprinkle with crushed candy. REFRIGERATE 30 minutes.
BIG-BATCH KRIS KRINGLE COOKIES Makes: 72 servings (1 cookie each)
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened 1 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar 2 eggs 1 tsp. vanilla 2-1/4 cups flour 1 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. salt 2 pkg. (6 squares each) BAKER’S White Chocolate, chopped 2 cups chopped pecans, toasted 2 cups dried cranberries HEAT oven to 375ºF. BEAT butter and sugars in large bowl with mixer until light and fluffy. Blend in eggs and vanilla. Add flour, baking soda and salt; mix well. Stir in chocolate, nuts and cranberries. DROP rounded tablespoonfuls of dough, 1-1/2 inches apart, onto baking sheets. BAKE 9 to 11 min. or until lightly browned. Cool on baking sheets 3 min.; remove to wire racks. Cool completely.
2 1/2 cup quick-cooking oatmeal 1/2 tsp. ground allspice 1/4 tsp. ground cloves 1 tsp. ground cinnamon 1 tsp. freshly ground nutmeg 1 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. ground ginger 1/2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. baking soda 1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup buttermilk 2 eggs 1 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar 1/2 cup vegetable shortening 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened 1 cup raisins 1 1/2 cup chopped walnuts 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract BROWN BUTTER ICING 1/2 cup butter 3 cups sifted powdered sugar 1 tsp. vanilla 3 to 4 tbsps. of water PREHEAT oven to 350 degrees. Grease one or more cookie sheets. Using an electric mixer, cream together butter, shortening, and sugar in a bowl until fluffy. Add eggs and beat until mixture is light in color. Add buttermilk. Sift together flour, baking soda, salt, baking powder, ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, and allspice; stir into creamed mixture. Fold in oatmeal, raisins, walnuts, and vanilla, blending well. Drop by rounded teaspoons onto cookie sheet. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes. Drizzle with Brown Butter Icing.
