PRESIDENT’S NOTE
Welcome to
CLIFFS LIVING Dear Members at The Cliffs, With great pride, we present the fall/winter edition of Cliffs Living—A Magazine With, For & About Members at The Cliffs. The approach of autumn reminds all of us of the importance of letting things go. Just as the trees release leaves from their branches, we release the difficulties and limitations imposed by a year in global lockdown. Now, as the world opens up again, we welcome the chance to reconnect with family, friends, and neighbors, and to celebrate the season ahead. It is this devotion to fostering community and kinship that inspired the further evolution of The Cliffs Vision Statement. In fine-tuning our overarching mission for the future, we solicited input from employees across all three regions of The Cliffs. The result is an aspirational new description of what we are and what we will strive for in all of our endeavors yet to come: The Cliffs are seven beautiful communities served by one Club that connects its members to new adventures and lifelong friendships through fellowship, fun, and the natural bounty of the Western Carolina Mountains. We’re confident that in this issue of Cliffs Living we’ve highlighted some of those connections and memories being made between you, our members. Our cover highlights our new caddie program, a service introduced to elevate members’ golf experience. Through CaddieMasters, you can utilize the services of a caddie in order to better enjoy the design and beauty of our seven golf courses. You can spend more time socializing, too, as the caddie handles everything around the course— besides swinging the club. This issue also gives you a sneak peek at some of our favorite upcoming amenities, plus a look into ladies’ golf programming, relationships, and education. And, in the words of the master himself, Tom Fazio recounts the creation of The Cliffs at Keowee Vineyards golf course. We hope you find the current issue to be as vibrant and colorful as autumn itself, and that you’re inspired by the stories and photos within.
Warm regards,
ROB DUCKETT President, The Cliffs

A SA LU T E TO SERV ICE New memorial designed as lasting tribute to veterans Brick by brick—literally—the dream is becoming reality. Work is underway on a new Veterans Memorial, located at The Cliffs at Keowee Falls and designed as a tribute to service men and women across all seven communities. Members are supporting the project via commemorative bricks engraved with the names of loved ones from every branch of the military, some going as far back as the Civil War. “This endeavor is near and dear to the hearts of so many of us at The Cliffs,” says David Delahunty, who is part of an eight-

member committee to head up design, fundraising, and construction of the memorial. “It’s an idea that has transpired and evolved and grown over time, and we are all eager to see it complete.” Delahunty served as a Marine Corps pilot for about 10 years before launching a civilian career with American Airlines, and he says he’s in awe of the military backgrounds of many of his neighbors and their family members. “There’s such a strong military presence here, with members who are veterans and members whose loved ones are veterans, many of them highly decorated,” he says. “This memorial is a way for us to honor them all while also showing support for the
values we hold so dear.” The Cliffs Veteran Memorial was designed by members Trip Agerton and John Keith, with stone and color selections by Kim Mitchem and Colleen Delahunty. Keith is owner of Keith Monument, a company that’s been creating personal, civic and public memorials for more than 150 years— including the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., and the Ulysses S. Grant Memorial at West Point. Design plans incorporate the armed services medallions in a stone-faced, halfoval wall embedded into the hillside adjacent to a koi pond and other water features. The half-oval surrounds a 30-foot illuminated flagpole centered in a patio

paved with commemorative bricks. The monument will be oriented for view via the roundabout at the Keowee Falls Clubhouse. “We chose this beautiful, peaceful location at Keowee Falls,” Delahunty says, “but I want to emphasize that this is a tribute to all veterans, and all families of veterans, throughout The Cliffs communities.” A ground-breaking ceremony was hosted on May 19 and completion is anticipated by late Fall 2021. Meritus Signature Homes is general contractor of the project and the company is gifting its services as an expression of gratitude to those who have served in the armed forces. Vendors and subcontractors making in-kind donations to the project include Ponds and Paths Landscaping, Keith Monument, Royal Engineering, Holder Electric Supply, and General Shale. Upstate Warrior Project volunteered to administer the fund-raising process, which lends 501(c)(3) status to donations. SPORTING LIFE Rita & Ed Lang
TA K ING A T I M EOUT Major league sports exec winds down at The Cliffs When Ed Lang steps out onto the porch of the home he and his wife Rita built two years ago at The Cliffs at Mountain Park, he sees stars— millions more than are visible where they live most of the year.
Well, he sees a lot of stars in New Orleans, too: Zion Williamson. Alvin Kamara. Cam Jordan. Drew Brees (at least, before he retired). Those are just a few of the marquee names Lang encounters in his role as CFO of the NFL’s New Orleans Saints and the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans. “It’s very much of a roller-coaster-type business and that can be hard,” he says, “but it can be exciting.” On a call from his office in the “City That Care Forgot,” Lang sounds ecstatic about the cares he forgets when he and Rita escape to The Cliffs every six to eight weeks. “We love our house in Mountain Park, and the ability to just sit on the porch and hear nothing but the birds and the wind,” he says. “In New Orleans and Uptown, we hear the boats coming and going up the river, we hear trains, we hear cars.” Lang’s career started in Racine, Wisconsin, at SC Johnson. He moved into sports administration in 1997 with the NHL’s Nashville Predators. In 2011, Lang moved his family to the Crescent City and, before long, began looking for a place where they could ultimately retire. The Upstate kept calling, perhaps because he was born in Greenville, South Carolina, although his family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, when he was 3. 32
CLIFFS LIVING
SPORTING LIFE Lang learned about The Cliffs from a “Wall Street Journal” article. During one visit, he cycled around Mountain Park: “And I thought, ‘Man, this would be what I enjoy.’” The couple often avail themselves of the community’s trails as well as the tennis courts at neighboring community, The Cliffs Valley, where Rita Lang enjoys matches and clinics. One of her fondest memories is also one of her freshest—when their grown sons, Andrew and Eddie, visited while Ed’s parents, Fred and Evelyn, were there, too. One day, she caught her father-in-law sleeping out on the screen porch, the fan spinning. “It was just nice to see him enjoying it and seeing the whole family enjoy it, and that’s what we’re hoping for,” she says. “We want a place where the kids and their families want to come, and The Cliffs offers that to us, between the amenities that they’ve got now and the amenities that they’re going to be adding in the future.” Their favorite? The Cabin at Mountain Park, which sealed the deal for

them. In 2021, The Cabin will undergo expansion and renovations to enhance services to members. “The food is fabulous,” Lang says. “The Cabin’s rustic feel really stood out to us.” For now, both see a (slow) transition to a much quieter sporting life. “When I get to The Cliffs, it’s a good way for me to just wind down and download, it’s a way for me to recharge my batteries,” he says. “I can get out by myself on a bike ride, being in the hills and the mountains.”

PURSUITS
L I V ING THE H IGH L IFE Retired pilots at The Cliffs still fly as often as possible Camaraderie is in the air. Sipping cocktails at The Cliffs at Glassy during a particularly glorious sunset, three friends gather to talk planes. One of the guys tells about flying Russian MiGs around Moscow. Another mentions his 250-odd touchdowns in a Navy A-6 fighter on aircraft carriers. The third, well … “You could call it barnstorming, if you wanted to—fly low and slow and land at grass airstrips, pastures,” Owen Waggoner says during happy hour with Chuck Ferguson, a onetime Navy lieutenant commander, and Gere Gaige, who served in the Air Force as a fighter-pilot instructor and later worked as a real estate consultant in Russia. Many a member at The Cliffs spent some or all of their careers in military, commercial, or corporate cockpits. A few still fly as often as they can, soaring maybe another thousand feet or so above where they sit on the patio in the Carolina mountains. Tonight, their stories are as disparate, and often as multilayered, as the cloud formations they navigate. Soon, for instance, Waggoner gets to talking about his airborne assaults on Southwest Florida’s most nefarious aerial enemy: mosquitos. Back in the ’90s, when he lived near Fort Myers, Florida, and worked in the insurance industry, he also flew for Lee County Mosquito Control. Waggoner recalls the six twin-engine DC-3s flying in tight formation, barely above the treetops. Once, just before sunrise, they zipped around the second floor of a 10-story building, waking up the residents, many of whom watched from their upper-floor condos. Sometimes, they would buzz a golf course’s long par 5, he says. “You'd hear 'em coming, right down the fairway,” says Chips, Waggoner’s wife of 55 years. “It was great. Everybody loved the mosquito-control people.” These days, Waggoner owns a Piper J3 Cub, his seventh airplane, which he picked up—in boxes—in Wisconsin. “Rented a U-Haul truck and bought this basket case. The entire plane was in boxes, the engine was falling apart,” he says, explaining that, yes, he assembled the 34

bright-yellow contraption himself in his garage at The Cliffs at Glassy. Meantime, Gaige enjoys a far more elaborate model that flies higher—and faster. His Cirrus SR-22 even packs a full-plane parachute in the fuselage. One pull on a cockpit handle, and the aircraft floats to safety. Back in Moscow, though, where Gaige met his wife Larisa, he could rent a Russian fighter jet for $300 an hour. These days, the Gaiges fly several times a year to their second home in Mountain Home, Arkansas. When he’s local, he enjoys weekly swings over his beloved
community, The Cliffs at Glassy. “The facilities, the waterfalls, the meadows, right down to the social life,” he says. “It’s just unbeatable in terms of the range and variety of activities for an active lifestyle. I don’t think there’s another place in the world that has the variety of activities and amenities that we have here.” Waggoner copies that. He takes to the air once a week, sailing along at only 60 mph (Gaige’s aircraft exceeds 200 mph). At this leisurely pace, he circles at about 500 feet—the same bird’s-eye view of the native
Cooper’s Hawk. “It’s just a beautiful place to fly,” Waggoner says. “Mountains. Hunting for waterfalls.” Ferguson, a former, long-time member at The Cliffs at Mountain Park, spent 12 years in the military and then flew for 30 years with Flying Tigers and FedEx. Today, he taxis his Vans two-seat RV plane out of a Greenville Downtown Airport hangar, from which a turn in any direction leads to somewhere pretty. “I mean, it's stunningly beautiful flying up here,” he says.

General Manager, The Cliffs at Keowee Vineyards BACKGROUND: With a Master of Fine Arts degree in acting from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, Jim Killion sets the stage for an engaging member experience at The Cliffs at Keowee Vineyards. He has worked in the hospitality industry for more than a quarter century, beginning as a server and ultimately becoming a GM at Rehoboth Beach Country Club in Delaware, a position he held for 14 years prior to joining The Cliffs in 2016. He holds the Certified Club Manager designation. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TRADITION AT KEOWEE VINEYARDS? Progressive dinners on the golf course— these are gorgeous crowdpleasers. WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF PROFESSIONAL ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? Work smart, with humor and humility. YOU’RE ON A REALITY SHOW—WHAT’S IT ABOUT? Theater kids take over the corporate world … and achieve world peace. WHAT’S SOMETHING PEOPLE ARE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT YOU? On stage I’ve played R.P. JAMES SCOTT General Manager, The Cliffs at Keowee Springs BACKGROUND: James Scott joined The Cliffs in October 2020. After playing football at Valdosta State University, he built a strong career in hospitality and private club management, notably as opening general manager at Canoe in Atlanta—a high-end restaurant concept tapped as a James Beard nominee for Best New Restaurant in the Country—and the Ford Plantation in Savannah, Georgia. He holds the Certified Club Manager designation. WHAT’S A SMALL THING YOU DO EVERY DAY THAT HAS A BIG IMPACT AT THE CLIFFS? Treat everyone as ladies and gentlemen. WHAT CELEBRITY WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO HAVE JOIN THE CLIFFS AT KEOWEE SPRINGS, AND WHY? Bear Grylls. He has a spirit and determination to keep going despite overwhelming odds. HAVE YOU EVER HAD A SIDE GIG? I collaborated with a three-star general to improve the culinary programs for the U.S. Army. To prepare for the U.S. Armed Forces Joint Culinary Training Exercise [the largest military culinary competition in North America] the Army’s team trained with our team at the Ford over several years of events—and they took home a gold medal. WHAT’S SOMETHING PEOPLE ARE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT YOU? I come from a long line of preachers: my father, grandfather and great-grandfather were all Methodist ministers.

KYLE CAUDILL General Manager, The Cliffs at Keowee Falls
<
BACKGROUND: Kyle Caudill joined The Cliffs in March 2018, bringing nearly 20 years of experience in the country club industry. His resume includes a variety of positions—everything from head golf pro to general manager—with Walt Disney Co. and ClubCorp, where his work earned eight national awards. A graduate of the University of Florida, he is pursuing the designation of Certified Club Manager. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE LAUNCHING A CAREER IN LUXURY CLUB MANAGEMENT? Build a team with a sincere dedication to service and hospitality. A strong, united culture and associates with servants’ hearts are the foundation of this industry. IF YOU COULD WORK IN A DIFFERENT POSITION AT ONE OF THE OTHER SIX CLUBS WITHIN THE CLIFFS, WHAT AND WHERE WOULD IT BE? I love my job as general manager at Keowee Falls; however, there is an old adage that all of us will eventually be “put out to pasture” and when that happens, I see myself mowing fairways on the top of beautiful Glassy Mountain. YOU CAN BRING THREE THINGS TO A DESERTED ISLAND. WHAT ARE THEY? My golf clubs, my fishing pole, and my family—my wife Emma and our two boys, Camden and Cooper. WHAT’S SOMETHING PEOPLE ARE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT YOU? I became a scratch golfer just three years after learning to play at age 17.

here are days Mark Smith will never forget. Like this one: The Glassy Mountain Fire Department (GMFD) responds to a horrific car crash. Firefighters use the Jaws of Life to extract the driver, who is young, terrified, and seriously injured. A helicopter awaits some distance away—it’s rough terrain here. “I was holding her hand while the younger guys carried the stretcher. I kept telling her she’s being so brave, so brave … she was in shock, just scared as can be, but I was able to calm her down a little bit,” Smith recalls. “And that touched my heart.” It motivates his spirit, too. Smith is one of a dozen committed members at The Cliffs who volunteer in a variety of capacities for GMFD, which covers a fire service area that’s 52 square miles and five stations strong in the northern portion of Greenville County, South Carolina. These men bring the community several hundred years of combined experience as firefighters and first responders. “They’re willing to get up in the middle of a meal to run out and help somebody who’s having the worst day of their life,” says Smith, who was inspired by their unwavering dedication to get involved when he retired to The Cliffs at Glassy in 2012 after a career in finance and commercial real estate. “My hat’s off to people like that.” Mark Shaver complemented his career as a global executive with a mining equipment company by serving as a volunteer fire chief in West Virginia for 23 years; a retiree at The Cliffs Valley since 2017, he now serves as GMFD’s chaplain. Shaver is also trained to fight structure fires which, fortunately, the Glassy Mountain department sees only a couple of times a year. “We all need to give back in some way or another,” he says. “Service isn’t something you do, it’s an attitude.” Bob Otto shares that attitude—and has since he was
21. He recalls that time he took off work and spent three days pitching in after a tornado ripped through his hometown outside of Cincinnati, Ohio. After a career with GE Aircraft Engines, Otto initially purchased a homesite in 2008 at The Cliffs at Keowee Falls and joined the Keowee Fire Department. When he and his wife moved into The Cliffs Valley, he signed up with GMFD. “I said, ‘Oh, my God, this is beautiful. I love it,’” Otto says. “You know, when you’ve got an emergency and somebody needs you, you go and do it. That’s what life is about. We help each other. We’re a community.” John Soley moved to The Cliffs Valley in 2019 and recently volunteered to fulfill many of the nonfirefighting duties that must be done. “You live in a community, and you look at the service that’s provided by the fire department, and you think, ‘Gee, all these people around here are relying upon this. How can I help out in some way?’” Soley says. Stuart Safft is helping in a new way. After 25 years as a volunteer firefighter and an EMT for 40—with six different departments as he and his wife relocated several times—he’s now also part of GMFD’s Board of Fire Commissioners, which boasts five members of The Cliffs. “A lot of things you do are good things, they’re very intangible, or they’re a tiny piece of a huge group that’s doing things,” says Safft, who continues to drive trucks and operate some of the department equipment. That’s the thing. Firefighting isn’t just fighting fires, and GMFD Chief Robert Staples is quick to list a variety of supporting roles. He appreciates every single volunteer—and he welcomes more. If someone wants to serve, he can for sure find something for them to do. Of The Cliffs crew, he says, “They’ve been able to retire, they moved to a beautiful community here in northern Greenville County, and they want to give back. It’s fantastic because it’s a vital need.”

Putting Mettle to the Pedal Cyclist from The Cliffs rides coast to coast to help conquer cancer

my Rosenberg woke up thinking about her dad on April 29—it would’ve been his 83rd birthday, if not for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma— and then she hopped on a bike to ride across the country in his honor. “I rode in memory of loved ones who lost their battle with cancer,” says Rosenberg, an employee at The Cliffs who participated in the Challenge to Conquer Cancer coast-to-coast ride from San Diego, California, to Charleston, South Carolina, “and I rode in honor of loved ones who are still fighting.” Challenge to Conquer Cancer, commonly called C3, is an Upstate South Carolina cyclingcentered nonprofit that raises money for cancer research and survivorship. The organization launched in 2008 with an annual relay-style bicycle ride from Greenville, South Carolina, to the LiveStrong Challenge in Austin, Texas; in 2012, the destination changed to the Dempsey Challenge in Lewiston, Maine. To date, C3 has donated $1.9 million to charity. This spring’s coast-to-coast ride was a oneand-done extra fundraising event. Cyclists conquered the grueling, 2,608-mile route by dividing into five groups and riding six-hour
shifts in a 24/7 relay. “It was hard, but when we got tired, we remembered how hard it is for cancer patients— that’s how we persevered,” says Rosenberg. A trainer at The Cliffs at Keowee Falls, Rosenberg is no stranger to cancer. She has survived her own bouts with thyroid and bile duct cancer and, in addition to her father, she’s lost a cousin and two grandparents to the disease; her mother is currently being treated for lung cancer. “It’s everywhere,” Rosenberg says sadly. “Everyone, it seems, has been touched by cancer—if not themselves, then a loved one.” The Cliffs generously sponsored Rosenberg’s commitment to cycle cross-country to help conquer cancer. Training included lots of time in the saddle, putting in plenty of miles across various terrain and practicing riding at night. “It was worth every bit of effort and of course I’m just so lucky to be healthy enough to get out and ride,” she says. “Being active is important for everyone, especially cancer patients and survivors, and I don’t take riding my bike for granted.” In fact, Rosenberg is already training for C3’s 1,300-mile ride to Maine in September.

embers at The Cliffs enjoy easyaccess hiking trails within all seven communities and seemingly endless off-the-beaten-path miles just beyond the gates. Take perfect proximity to an abundance of state parks and national forests—then add in some of the South’s ideal fall weather—and you’ve got a calendar chock-full of potential day trips. Just ask Jim Floyd. He and his wife Shawn purchased a retirement home in The Cliffs at Walnut Cove in 2019 and now they’re making the most of its prime location. A few steps out the door and they can be hiking into Pisgah National Forest; within a mile, they are on the Blue Ridge Parkway segment of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. Floyd has been into the outdoors all his life. Raised in eastern West Virginia, he grew up spending as much time outside as possible— much of that in the Shenandoah Valley. He moved to Upstate South Carolina to attend Clemson University, where he earned a degree in forestry and forest management while spending “a lot” of his college years exploring the lakes— Hartwell, Keowee, and Jocassee—and state parks surrounding the Tiger Town campus. After a career that began in forest products with Proctor & Gamble, he knew that he wanted to retire somewhere that offered opportunities to do what he loves best: hiking, kayaking, and spending time in nature. “I love the Blue Ridge Parkway and trails there, and I love Jocassee, but my favorite [places to explore] may be the ‘Four Jewels’ of the Upstate,” Floyd says, referring to four rivers in North and South Carolina—Whitewater, Thompson, Horsepasture, and Toxaway—that flow into Lake Jocassee. These gems sparkle with multiple waterfalls, including the upper and lower Whitewater Falls along Whitewater; High Falls and Big Falls along Thompson; and Drift Falls (aka Bust-Your-Butt Falls), Turtleback Falls, and Rainbow Falls along Horsepasture. “The easiest to see is the Toxaway Falls,” he says, noting the accessible location just off North Carolina Highway 64 as it crosses the Toxaway

e’re at the back tees of the most picturesque golf hole in all of South Carolina—some say anywhere—and the man who designed it more than two decades ago is still intrigued by the spectacular view. Sitting on the bench overlooking the 17th hole at The Cliffs at Keowee Vineyards, Tom Fazio gazes across the shimmering, turquoise water of Lake Keowee with the Blue Ridge Mountains draped in the distance. He takes a deep breath and says, “Twenty-two years.” A soft smile spreads over his face and the twinkle in his eye is only slightly obscured by the signature tinted glasses. Summer is here and a family boats by on the lake, out for a morning tubing adventure. “The memories of creating this golf course are so vivid,” Fazio says. “It was so much fun to do.”
A DESTINY FOR EXCELLENCE Fazio’s name is synonymous with excellence in golf course architecture.
58
CLIFFS LIVING
Over the past half century, he has designed award-winning courses across the United States and abroad. This was not his dream; rather, his destiny. “I grew up in golf, all I’ve ever done is golf,” Fazio says. “People ask me how I got into it … I was in the right place at the right time.” In the 1950 U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club, his uncle, George Fazio, lost to Ben Hogan in an 18-hole playoff. “Obviously winning the U.S. Open would have changed his life,” Fazio says. “He probably would have continued playing more and more golf.” Instead, George Fazio launched a career in golf course ownership, designing and building his own to operate. As a high schooler, a young Tom Fazio went to work for his uncle; this part-time gig ultimately led to an illustrious career as a golf course designer. Today, an ever-evolving lineup of Fazio-branded courses are each uniquely delightful to play. At its core, his
philosophy is to make sure no two holes or courses look alike. “You create golf holes to fit your philosophy,” Fazio says. “Change grades and elevations so that you create the quality golf experience you want a golfer to have.”
A PERFECT SCENARIO Among hundreds of golf courses within the Fazio portfolio, The Cliffs at Keowee Vineyards stands out. Fazio made Western North Carolina his summer home in the 1980s. When The Cliffs approached his firm in 1997 to design the Keowee Vineyards golf course, the proximity of the site to his home and office added to what was already a perfect scenario. “This was a textbook, ideal situation: a beautiful environment, a lake, great longrange views,” Fazio says. In a secluded setting, Fazio was given the freedom to route the course so that the environments changed hole by hole, thus maximizing the beauty of the entire site and making the most of all the pockets and
“I didn’t create all of this. Nature did.” – TOM FAZIO, GOLF COURSE ARCHITECT, THE CLIFFS AT KEOWEE VINEYARDS
nooks carved by Lake Keowee. The result is a beautifully crafted golf course that’s fair and playable, but also becomes more challenging the farther back you tee off. During players’ rounds, they enjoy tree-lined chutes, polished Champion Bermuda greens, grapevine fairways, and a breeze bouncing off the water’s edge. Any challenges designing this lakeside masterpiece? Hardly. “People ask, ‘What was the biggest challenge?’ Fazio says candidly. “It wasn’t a challenge, it’s [my] job.” When you give an expert a flawless piece of land as a blank canvas and the freedom to operate his talent, the results are mesmerizing and the difficulties, scarce. According to Fazio, all his projects have the same set of protocols. “There are just automatic things you do and it’s not a big deal,” he says. From elevation changes that call for moving earth to drainage requirements as specific as where certain pipes must go, it’s all part of the process. A process that Fazio—a man who truly loves to work—enjoys immensely.
AMPLE CREATIVITY The Keowee Vineyards routing plan meanders its way around the lake and into heavily wooded areas, and players tackle a variety of strategic landing areas and shot options coupled with menacing bunker placements. With ample room for creativity, Fazio positioned eight holes on Lake Keowee’s edge. But could there have been more? “In an ideal world I would have had all 18 holes adjacent to the lake,” Fazio says. “There’s a combination in the planning process of blending the environment through the elevation changes, and also providing quality environments for residents.” Habitat sensitivity was paramount and Fazio’s team re-vegged the site with thousands of trees during construction. The foliage continues to mature with each changing season, creating a private sacrarium for golfers—minus the boaters out on the water. There is no debate that the view of the 17th hole is stunning, whether you are on the tee box or looking up from the water. From locals to seasonal visitors, it’s certainly considered a landmark on the lake. Fazio reveled in what he had from his first step on the property. “From day one—even before the bunkers were in, before we ever built it—we just knew this was going to be a layup,” Fazio says. But he gives credit where credit is due. “I didn’t create all of this,” Fazio says. “Nature did.”
BEST IN STATE The golf world took immediate notice of this shore-lined gem in Upstate South Carolina: The Cliffs at Keowee Vineyards was named in Golf Digest’s prestigious list of the 10 Best New Private Courses upon its debut in 1999. And it has remained steady during the last two decades as one of Golf Digest’s Best in State. Apart from the golf course, Fazio is equally impressed with the details sometimes overshadowed by the stunning backdrops. “Look at the stonework, the curbing on the cart path, the vegetation that’s framed on the roadways and settings,” he says. “Look at the mulch that’s put out underneath the trees, the continual maintenance, and the condition of the golf course. That’s why The Cliffs communities are fabulous.” Attention to detail is key, whether it’s in golf course design or hitting the links to try to master a game that is like a puzzle without an answer. Indeed, The Cliffs at Keowee Vineyards is sensational, and has the added bonus of being complemented by six other distinct gifts to nature. “Look at the variety in all the golf courses at The Cliffs,” Fazio says. “Every piece of it is just an outstanding place to be.”

NO. 2: PAR 3 - 193 YARDS The first par-3 comes early in the round and you must be wary of the bunkers stretching from the front center to the front left of the green. The natural slope of the green will feed your ball from right to left. Shots hit off-line to the left may still enjoy a par chance without nailing the green off the tee.
NO. 3: PAR 4 - 415 YARDS This slight dogleg right has a big bunker on the right side of the fairway to force the safer shot to the left, leaving players with a better angle for their approach. The fairway meanders down to an average-sized green that is guarded by bunkers on the back left and front right.
NO. 4: PAR 5 - 625 YARDS The yardage number from the back tees jumps out, making this an intimidating hole. Hitting a solid ball from any tee box will put the bunkers behind you on a downward sloping fairway. Players get their first glimpse of Lake Keowee as the angle shifts to a dogleg right on the second half of the hole that’s really designed to attack the green with a wedge on your third shot. A cove creeps up and surrounds the right side of this t wo-tiered green, making it difficult to safely reach in t wo shots.

NO. 5: PAR 4 - 380 YARDS
NO. 7: PAR 4 - 321 YARDS
This hole boasts a picturesque shore-lined fairway with vineyards on the left side. The length of the hole is not daunting as players should have a shorter iron for their approach shot. But precision is required to hit the back-to-front sloping, sectional green that is guarded by t wo front bunkers and water sweeping up behind a steep drop-off on the backside.
The shortest par-4 on the golf course forces strategic shots from tee to green. Accuracy is key and you may not need to pull out your driver at the tee box to have a short-iron approach shot. A long, sloping, boomerang-shaped green has a bunker on the left and a massive false front, so short approach shots are in danger of rolling back to the fairway. A fantastic design element, the hole can play completely different depending on the pin placement.
NO. 6: PAR 3 - 193 YARDS You’ll fire your tee shot over water at the second par-3 of this round. Club selection and distance control are key as a steep incline leading to the front of the large, dome-shaped green may force you to take an extra club. Shots that fall short likely will leave a steep uphill pitch or your ball will be wet. The front right-side bunker can save you from a penalty, but it’s no easy up and down from there, either.
NO. 8: PAR 4 - 458 YARDS A solid tee shot into the generous landing area will leave a short to mid-iron approach shot to a slight ly elevated green. Just make sure you avoid the closest bunker off the tee or the hole becomes much more difficult. Two bunkers guard the right front of the sloping green. Try your best to hit the middle of the green wherever the pin placement is that day.

NO. 9: PAR 5 - 569 YARDS Close out the front nine starting from an elevated tee box hitting onto a downward-sloping fairway. If you clear the bunker on the left, decide if you want to go for the green in t wo or play it safe. Either way, you may have a scoring opportunity, but Fazio puts a premium on approach-shot accuracy with a cluster of three bunkers on the front right of the green. And be wary of the water to the left.
NO. 10: PAR 4 - 418 YARDS Players start their back nine from an elevated tee box and need to avoid the bunker on the right side of the landing area. Longer hitters should be cautious of the ball rolling into a left fairway bunker farther up as drawing balls (or fading for lefties) will get a bit of run. Approach shots likely will face a downhill, sloping lie to a relatively flat green guarded by a front left bunker.

NO. 11: PAR 3 - 208 YARDS
NO. 13: PAR 4 - 425 YARDS
Tackle this straigh t, sligh t ly uphill shot with confidence on the first of three par-3s on the back nine. Although not too severe, the green slopes back to front and missed shots to the righ t could wind up in the large green side bunker.
Fazio deploys op tical illusions using natural elements on this swinging dogleg righ t, as the tee shot feels more narrow than it actually is. The hole is a stark contrast of strategy if you are playing from the back tees versus the other tee boxes. Players migh t try to drive their ball over the cove to set up a shorter approach shot, but the landing area straigh t ahead is the safer play. The green is plenty large, but runs downward toward the water, making putts from its back extra quick.
NO. 12: PAR 4 - 464 YARDS This tree-lined hole gives you a generous landing area to work with off the tee. Be prepared for a longer approach shot unless you can cut the ball down the hole’s dogleg righ t. A larger bunker engulfs the left side of a smaller green, and longer shots landing too firm could roll off the back.

NO. 14: PAR 5 - 538 YARDS A big tee shot will be helpful when taking on this par-5 and the first step is getting the ball in the air over a small, creeping cove. The landing area is inviting, but bunkers to the left and right farther up can cause trouble for heavy hitters. You’ll be afforded a variety of second- and third-shot options, but be careful when taking on a deliberately bunkered green with a false front that’s elevated to protect easy scoring opportunities.
NO. 15: PAR 5 - 566 YARDS
NO. 17: PAR 3 - 250 YARDS
A dramatic setting with a huge treeline and views of Lake Keowee. Hit from an elevated tee box and you should find the wide landing area. Second and third shots likely will be from a downhill lie, and control will be key with water and a penalty area on the right and bunkers guarding the front right of the green. You get the courtesy of a stunning backdrop as you try to land the ball on a smaller green that feeds left to right toward the lake.
Take a deep breath before you reach the tee box of this signature hole. If playing from the back tees, you’ll hit your shot from an elevated tee box and must carry the ball over the water to land on the peninsula green surrounded by water on three sides. The other tee boxes offer a straigh t, downhill shot to the green jetting out into Lake Keowee.
NO. 16: PAR 3 - 177 YARDS A gorgeous hole that puts a premium on your club selection. Two big front righ t bunkers—and t wo more on the left side—leave litt le margin for error. Most shots sett ling on the middle of the green will have an opportunity for a birdie no matter where the flag is that day.
nnell both made * In May 2009, John and Sue Do hou r apart holes-in-one on No. 16 about an from each other.
NO. 18: PAR 4 - 429 YARDS Fazio ends your round with a beautiful dogleg righ t leading up to the clubhouse. With Lake Keowee at your back, launch your drive but be wary of the thick vegetation on the righ t side of the fairway. Approach shots will play moderately uphill and take on an elevated green with a cluster of bunkers on the front left side. The green slopes severely from back to front and left to righ t. Be careful not to end your round with a three-putt!

ome women are intimidated by the game of golf. Then they meet Ann Jacobson. This enthusiastic golfer loves the game, and she’s part of a mission to make sure other ladies do, too. “Golf should be fun,” says Jacobson, one of the original members at The Cliffs at Mountain Park. She makes it a point to seek out new female players at the club, encouraging them to stick with it ’til they get in the swing. “Nobody should feel pressured or embarrassed about how they play. Every shot is good in some way.” Her inclusive, energetic drive to grow the ranks of ladies golf at Mountain Park has earned Jacobson the moniker of “head cheerleader” in the community.
GAME FOR SOMETHING NEW Beth MacDonald had never picked up a golf club in her life prior to moving to The Cliffs at Mountain Park—unlike her husband, who is an avid golfer. “I started playing less than a year ago, when I was 59 years old,” MacDonald says. “To really assimilate into this golforiented community, I felt like I needed to be part of the golf scene. I was dragged into it kicking and screaming, but people kept saying ‘Give it a try; you’ll get hooked.’” And indeed, she did. MacDonald is not alone in getting hooked on golf after coming to The Cliffs. When Gay Shackelford and her husband built a home at Mountain Park in 2012, she didn’t play yet, either. “When the golf course opened [in 2013], a lot of us came out to play who were new to the game,” Shackelford says. “I remember I was terrified. There’s this feeling when you first go out on the course that everyone else knows how to play—and you don’t.”
72

But then Jacobson showed up, assuring the novice she needn’t wait to become a skilled golfer before joining in with the other women. “There was a comfort level standing on that first tee—with a group of people watching—and knowing if I missed the ball or duffed it, that was OK,” Shackelford recalls. Before long, she was out playing golf almost every day.
A CULTURE OF INCLUSIVITY Inclusivity is the name of the game. Along with Liz Yacovone—an accomplished golfer who moved from The Cliffs Valley to Mountain Park a little over a year ago—Jacobson, MacDonald, and Shackelford are doing their darnedest to get more ladies out on the greens. “It’s not overt or organized,” Shackelford says. “It’s that we’ve developed this culture at Mountain Park where new golfers feel secure.” Indeed, they’re growing a sisterhood simply by reaching out and putting novices at ease. “I remember a woman came to play with us one day and she was so nervous,” says Jacobson. “So we took great care to keep encouraging her, and made sure she stayed afterwards for lunch with us. And she’s come back every week since then.” MacDonald believes non-judgmental support is key, and everyone plays it forward. “Ann will say, ‘I don’t care if you don’t know how to swing a golf club, I would love for you to play with me.’ And Gay is so committed to the game … and so generous with her compliments. She’s always out there practicing, and when she sees me she says, ‘Every time I see you, you’re doing better and better.’” The winner of several club championships at The Cliffs—including Mountain Park in 2020—Yacovone understands it can be intimidating hitting

a round with a more experienced golfer. “When I played with the club champion at The Cliffs Valley for the first time, I hit my ball and it hit the woman’s golf cart! I thought, ‘Oh, no, I can never play with her again,’ but she laughed it off,” Yacovone recalls, and that experience reminds her to likewise keep things lighthearted when playing with newcomers. “Liz is so supportive and encouraging,” Shackelford says. “I don’t know anyone who’s played with Liz that didn’t have a good time.”
GOING WITH THE PROS Many novices find golf to be more athletic than expected—not to mention a daunting sport to learn—so Yacovone always suggests beginners take advantage of the first-rate staff at The Cliffs. “[The golf pros] at Mountain Park do an amazing job. They’ve got clinics for all levels, starting in a group setting for basic skills. They’re always out there being so supportive,” Yacovone says. A left-hander, MacDonald found the Mountain Park golf pro invaluable for golf lessons and weekly skill-building clinics. “I even had to learn how to put my golf bag on the cart,” she confides. “I might have felt stupid in another setting where there wasn’t the friendly, welcoming culture that The Cliffs offers.” The Cliffs also offers a variety of amenities and services to help golfers level up their game. Mountain Park boasts large practice facilities, including a two-tiered driving range, a short-game area to practice chipping and putting, and a caddie program to ensure golfers always pick the right iron. The option to play at all seven golf courses across The Cliffs—each one uniquely beautiful— drives women to play more often. “Having access to these seven courses is like being a kid in a candy store,” says Shackelford. “Each course is different, they’re all challenging, and there are nice people at all of them.” Golfers are encouraged to hit the Wellness Center, too. “One day I was taking a lesson with Sean Kennedy, [PGA Professional and Director of Golf Instruction at The Cliffs],” Yacovone notes, “and I said ‘Sean, I really want to hit my driver farther.’ He looked at me and replied, ‘Well, have you been to the gym lately?’” The staff at the Wellness Center coordinates golfspecific strength training and fitness classes. Golfers who need to improve certain facets of their game, such as flexibility or stability, can request customized exercise plans.

PLAY LIKE A GIRL Ladies golf enjoys immense esprit de corps across The Cliffs as a variety of initiatives—recurring ladies-only play days, special events and tournaments—encourage golfers to come play like a girl. The grand dame is The Cliffs Valley Ladies Golf Association, with female players from Valley and Mountain Park; LGAs at Walnut Cove and Vineyards have followed suit with growing, thriving memberships in the Asheville and Lake regions. Every club hosts a weekly Ladies Day during the season: • KEOWEE FALLS LADIES DAY — Mondays • KEOWEE SPRINGS LADIES DAY — Tuesdays • MOUNTAIN PARK LADIES DAY — Tuesdays • GLASSY LADIES DAY — Tuesdays • WALNUT COVE LADIES DAY — Wednesdays • VALLEY LADIES DAY — Thursdays • VINEYARDS LADIES DAY — Thursdays Other ladies-only events include: LADIES’ INTERCLUB—A multi-club initiative that plays across all seven communities. Golfers are divided into three regions—Valley (members from Valley and Mountain Park), Mountains (members from Walnut Cove and Glassy), and Lake (members from Vineyards, Falls, and Springs)—to compete in a four-ball match format in games played at multiple courses from May through September. Scores are cumulative for the season. Upcoming matches include: • Ladies’ Interclub: Lake vs. Valley—Friday, September 10, at The Cliffs at Keowee Falls • Ladies’ Interclub: Valley vs. Mountains—Monday, September 13, at The Cliffs Valley LADIES’ PLAYAROUND—A female-only series of golf outings hosted by all seven clubs in rotation. Events are organized by the hosting club’s pro shop, and format changes from course to course. Upcoming Playaround dates include: • Ladies’ Playaround—Tuesday, August 17, at The Cliffs at Glassy • Ladies’ Playaround—Wednesday, September 22, at The Cliffs Valley • Ladies’ Playaround—Monday, October 11, at The Cliffs at Keowee Falls BIRDIE BANDITS and HEAVEN ON SEVEN (née Chicks with Sticks)—Member-organized groups for varying skill levels. Birdie Bandits is designed for stronger female players, with handicaps 18 and under. Organizers include Debe Schwedler from Valley and Bennie Whipple from Mountain Park. Heaven on Seven, led by a representative from each club, is designed for female players with higher handicaps, around 18-25. Groups play year-round, meeting weekly and playing all seven courses. The format varies. Players are encouraged to post scores on the Golf Handicap and Information Network.

CREATING CAMARADERIE Jacobson and her foursome derive satisfaction out of being able to learn and refine a challenging sport in retirement. But at the end of the day, they all say, the camaraderie matters as much as the game. An emphasis on fostering friendships is why the ladies’ 9-hole group tees off on Tuesday mornings—so everyone can stay for lunch after their round. This combination of golf and gathering is now some 20 members strong. It’s why Mountain Park’s golf pros host a lovely luncheon as part of Ladies’ Opening Day in the spring. And it’s the reason behind the fun and frequent interplay between the ladies group in Mountain Park and The Cliffs Valley Ladies Golf Association. Creating camaraderie via opportunities for women from across The Cliffs to golf, mix and mingle is important to Yacovone, who along with several fellow enthusiasts helped spirit The Cliffs Ladies’ Playaround a few years back.
Jacobson founded Ladies Day at Mountain Park on a 9-hole format to accommodate newer golfers who prefer shorter play (this weekly event is now coordinated by the club). Jacobson helped launch a Friday travel group that rotates among all seven of The Cliffs courses, “because we’re so good we need to take our skills on the road,” she notes with an infectious laugh. The club does its part by hosting golf-related social events like the monthly Nine & Dine, where two couples play in the evening and then have dinner. Women’s golf at The Cliffs is definitely on the upswing. “The culture here is so welcoming to all levels of lady golfers,” says Yacovone. “When I’m out on the course, I can hear laughter over on the other fairway, I can hear clapping and woo-hooing ... and that’s infectious and it draws you in. It’s a joy to see so many women out there on the golf course having so much fun.”

esidential real estate is hot— homes and communities in the Western Carolinas just seem to be selling themselves these days—but that’s not cooling the pace of major capital projects at The Cliffs. “We are constantly innovating and improving what we offer our members,” says Chris Calloway, Vice President of Operations at The Cliffs. “Regardless of the market today, we are making significant investments in the clubs with an eye toward the future.” The Cliffs communities already enjoy immense aspirational appeal. Positioned across a stunning swath of the Carolinas, these seven gems are anchored by award-winning golf courses, dynamic lifestyle amenities, and an abundance of natural beauty. While others might rest on these laurels, Calloway says The Cliffs leadership team believes in building on positive momentum. Indeed, when South Street Partners acquired The Cliffs in 2019, they committed to fulfill overdue promises from the previous ownership group— and even added a few of their own to the list. “Our vision is to continue elevating the member experience across all seven communities,” Calloway says, outlining a two-pronged approach that enhances both service philosophy and physical amenities. Design plans are ongoing—and permits are beginning to wend their way through the approval process— for a new clubhouse at The Cliffs at Keowee Springs as well as The Lake Club, a shared amenity at The Landing within Keowee Springs. Clubhouse refreshes have been completed at The Cliffs at Glassy, The Cliffs Valley, and, most recently, The Cliffs at Walnut Cove. A reconstructed Lakehouse at Keowee Vineyards opened in summer 2020, and an ambitious expansion is currently underway at The Cabin in Mountain Park. “Things are moving right along,” Calloway says. “Progress is always exciting, and enthusiasm is high.” Following are a few updates (details are subject to change).

CLIFFS LIVING
THE LAKE CLUB AT THE LANDING Another almost-shovel-ready project is The Lake Club, which Calloway describes as “a smaller amenity with a little bit of everything.” This amenity enhances The Landing, a development located on a prime peninsula within The Cliffs at Keowee Springs. Designed by Lake|Flato Architects, a Texas-based firm noted for its ability to blend buildings into beautiful surroundings, The Lake Club is conceptualized as one principal structure with multiple social spaces—some inside, some out.
“This is an innovative design—a fresh, new take on club amenities,” Calloway says. Oriented to make the most of cooling breezes, natural lighting, and passive solar heating, the club will comprise a wellness center with a small yoga deck, an intimate food and beverage outlet serving “high-end pool food,” a cozy event lawn, and several pools. A private dock will make The Lake Club accessible via boat. The final plans and budget have been approved; the permitting process is underway. The project is expected to break ground in late 2021.

KEOWEE SPRINGS CLUBHOUSE The Cliffs at Keowee Springs already boasts a family-friendly list of lively amenities—there’s The Beach Club and Surf Shop, The Bistro, The Porch, and an acclaimed Tom Fazio golf course—but the community has long anticipated a true clubhouse of its own. “Fulfilling this promise to the Keowee Springs community has been a priority for [South Street Partners] from day one,” Calloway says. The design has been finalized; construction documents have been delivered to contractors; and the permitting process is underway. The project is expected to break ground in winter 2021. “This has been a complex process … but we have worked out all the
details and we are excited to be moving forward.” While there have been challenges aplenty, especially surrounding the permitting process, the design is stellar. Conceptualized by Hart Howerton, a top New York- and San Francisco-based architectural firm, the clubhouse will sit atop a hill, overlooking the 18th hole and offering exceptional views from every angle. “It’s going to be a wonderful space,” Calloway says, pointing to a plan comprising open-air breezeways and interconnected pavilions that house a variety of activity areas including a dining room, a bar and lounge, a golf shop, and a wellness center.
THE CABIN AT MOUNTAIN PARK Renderings are conceptual and program is subject to change without notice.
THE TAVERN AND GOLF HOUSE AT THE CLIFFS AT WALNUT COVE A recent clubhouse refresh is elevating style as well as service at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove. The Tavern’s remodeled dining room exudes the ambiance of a high-end restaurant, thanks to new furniture and finishes. The newly covered outdoor patio creates more opportunities for indooroutdoor dining experiences. “The Tavern already had a really cool bar. The dining room updates truly

bring this space to life,” Calloway says. The renovation improved functionality within The Golf House. The new layout brings golfers directly into the pro shop, which includes a lounge area overlooking the golf course. “We want all our spaces to foster social connections,” Calloway says, “and this encourages golfers to hang out.”
KEOWEE SPRINGS CLUBHOUSE Renderings are conceptual and program is subject to change without notice.
THE CABIN AT THE CLIFFS AT MOUNTAIN PARK Underway now is a significant expansion—and slight renovation—of The Cabin at The Cliffs at Mountain Park. “We are keeping the same design intent,” Calloway says. “The Cabin was well-designed initially and its rustic aesthetics are good … we just need to make this space bigger.” The project will double the size of the main dining room and nearly double the outdoor patio, allowing for larger gatherings and special events. A new, intimate space is being added for
private parties that can run concurrent to dinner service. The kitchen and other back-of-house spaces will grow to accommodate the expanded dining opportunities. The expansion also will yield enhanced locker facilities and “an appropriatesized pro shop,” Calloway says. The Cabin is expected to reopen by the end of spring 2022. In the meantime, golf is operating from a temporary unit while food and beverage are being served at The Outpost.

If life is a banquet, Ronnie and Dawn Mabra certainly have a full plate. Ronnie played football at Georgia Tech and earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Georgia School of Law before opening a personal-injury law firm in Atlanta, Georgia. Dawn, who holds master’s degrees in public health and educational psychology, is a fourth-year student at Morehouse School of Medicine. This busy couple is also raising two young sons—Remiii, 5, and Riley, 1—and the need for a family getaway far removed from big-city life prompted them to purchase a lakefront lot at The Cliffs at Keowee Springs, where they’ve been members since 2015.
Ronnie: The Beach Club is amazing … and Keowee Springs is building a new clubhouse and a wellness center. We also enjoy [the waterfront amenities] at Keowee Vineyards and Keowee Falls.
Dawn: And there’s something to be said for the service at The Cliffs. We spend a lot of time at The Beach Club, and the [staff] there is so wonderful. They never skip a beat, they always remember us, they always ask about our family. I always feel a warm presence when we come here.
Dawn: I’m from New York, but I’ve been in Georgia for 20 years. I always say I came for a visit to see my parents [who had recently moved to the South] and never left.
CL What does being a member at The Cliffs mean to
Ronnie: I grew up on the southside of Atlanta. I’m a country boy who married a city gal.

The Cliffs at Keowee Springs
the prettiest water that I’ve ever seen, and we’ve been all over the Caribbean. When I’m at The Beach Club and look from the pool over to the lake, it takes my breath away.
CL Tell us where you both are from. A
<
Dawn: We have actually been coming to The Cliffs for a long time—Ronnie has a very good friend whose parents have a place in Keowee Vineyards, so we’ve visited for years. That’s the benefit of growing up with the same people since third grade.
Dawn: We love the lake for ourselves, but we really are about family. We often come here with a lot of family members. My 5-year-old son loves to go on vacation, and any time we come up to The Cliffs, it’s a treat for him. It brings so much joy to all of us. The way The Cliffs at Keowee Springs is set up with The Bistro and The Porch, there’s a lot of opportunities for families to gather. Choices are good when you have little ones!
CL With plans to build a second home at Keowee Springs within the next few years, do you foresee a day when you might be living at The Cliffs fulltime?
CL You haven’t built your planned lake house yet at Keowee Springs, so when you come to The Cliffs, how do you enjoy the community as members?
A
Ronnie: We try to get out on the lake as much as we can … and we visit the clubhouses for dinner. We have a fire pit by our dock, so we sit out there by the fire, roasting marshmallows, talking, having a beer.
CL What attracted you to The Cliffs at Keowee Springs? A
A
Dawn: We talk about it. We certainly love the idea that Keowee Springs is only 2.5 hours from Atlanta, where most of our family lives. Being able to come up here—not with a whole agenda; you don’t have to have a thousand things to do—just to enjoy each other’s company outside of what can be a very stressful environment in the city has been such a blessing.
Dawn: I like the fact that it’s a young community. Knowing that we were going to be starting our own family, we really wanted to be in a place where there were other young families, too. And we love Lake Keowee … nothing beats that clear water! It’s

The Cliffs Valley
Scott and Candida Moore didn’t have to look too far for the community of their dreams. He’s from Asheville, North Carolina; she’s a native of Greenville, South Carolina; and The Cliffs Valley—nestled off the roadway that connects the two cities—immediately felt like home. The Moores, married 25 years and parents to two adult children, moved into The Cliffs in April 2021. Scott is CEO of 98 Ventures, a Greenville-based executive-management services company. The couple’s daughter Megan works there too, as a communications specialist; their son Tyler is stationed in Virginia Beach, where he’s studying to be a U.S. Navy intelligence specialist.
CL Why did you choose The Cliffs Valley? A
Scott: We’ve made that trek [along U.S. Highway 25] past The Cliffs, and specifically The Cliffs Valley, almost our entire lives. We always thought, “Wow, that is the crème de la crème, a jewel.” Also, in the age of the pandemic, we’ve learned to appreciate serenity and peacefulness and just each other, so The Cliffs was a natural choice.
Candida: I’ve always loved privacy, so I feel really good about having a home where I can just walk outside alone with my dog, but still be part of a community where we can get together with other people and have that family-type feel.
CL What are some of your favorite amenities at The Cliffs? A
Scott: We’re still exploring and learning. We love how relaxing and peaceful the golf course is. We also love having options. The other day, we went to the range to hit a few balls after work but didn’t realize it was closed. So we turned around and said, “OK, well, let’s just go hiking.” It’s so great to have the choice of playing golf on a beautiful course or hiking on a trail that feels like any great state park—without ever leaving the neighborhood.
TYLER MOORE
CL What is it like to live at The Cliffs Valley full time? A
Scott: I don’t know that we understood just how “community” this community would be. We were here for all of 24 hours before the first banana bread was delivered to our house. The very next week, I got a text message from the next-door neighbor inviting us over for drinks. There were probably eight to 10 couples who attended that night just to welcome us to the neighborhood.
CL Other thoughts about living at The Cliffs Valley?
Candida: I enjoy golfing and going to the range. The wellness center offers a lot of fitness classes. Loving Zumba!
A
Candida: I would add that The Valley Clubhouse has really good french fries!
Megan: I love the hiking trails as well. I also like the wellness center. My mom and I enjoy working out there. Just even in our backyard, having places to walk to like the waterfalls. It’s definitely nice and serene.
Scott: The staff has been amazing. Every single person we’ve met has been really welcoming, really fantastic, and we feel like we’re in a resort every single day.

Because, let’s face it, building a new custom home is a potentially daunting endeavor, especially for first-timers like the Snyders—the process is filled with infinite decisions and, quite often, unexpected delays and inevitable hiccups along the way. Partnering with Cliffs Builders allowed them a taste of the customized process
without being too overwhelming. “We have truly had the chance to create our vision from the ground up,” Tara Snyder says. Cliffs Builders built-for-sale program comprises a variety of luxury home packages with a choice of several set floorplans, a mix of finish options, and varied appliance choices. A template of inspiration gives buyers the flexibility to individualize their new homes, with a timeframe that’s about half that of a complete custom build. The Snyders downsized several years ago to a condominium in Charleston, and then began searching for a second home. As Tara and Lance are both still working—and love to travel—they didn’t want to be chained to home projects and yard work. Meadowview at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove ticked all the boxes for them: the community is close to an abundance of restaurants and cultural events in Asheville, North Carolina, and yard maintenance is handled by the POA, making it an ideal lock-and-leave situation.
When they discovered Meadowview, the only thing currently under construction was the model home—which happened to be on a lot they loved. Kevin Adams, Director of Construction at The Cliffs, agreed to sell the model, even at that early stage within the neighborhood, and the Snyders eagerly signed on. Framing was already underway on the 2,400-square-foot model but there was still plenty of opportunity to put their own stamp on the home. The biggest upgrade the Snyders made was altering the outdoor living space. While the original plan calls for a screened porch and a patio out back, they opted to screen in the entire space, which includes a stone-faced fireplace. “The house has these beautiful, big, accordion doors on one side, and when you open them up, it adds about 700 square feet to our living space,” Tara shares. For the interior design, the Snyders worked with Elizabeth McGee from Cheatham Fletcher

Scott, an architectural and design firm in Augusta, Georgia, that The Cliffs uses for many of its projects. Tara was so impressed that she ultimately hired Elizabeth and her colleague, Meghan Hickox, to do “all the pretty stuff.” After living in a traditional-style home in Charleston for many years, the Snyders wanted a design that juxtaposed mid-century modern elements with a mountain aesthetic. Their new home’s stucco and Tennessee stone exterior fits the latter, while the interior trends modern. Case in point is the focal fireplace wall in the living room, faced floor-to-ceiling with honed black granite. In the kitchen, gray-and-white marble countertops continue a clean line all the way up the backsplash, while marble drapes to the floor over the waterfall island. From Charleston, the Snyders monitored the Meadowview home’s progress in real time via an app called CoConstruct, a constructionmanagement software program that makes it possible for homebuyers at The Cliffs to see their specs, design choices, and even photos on an individual online account. “What was great was having the designers as a sounding board. They made sure everything was cohesive,” says Tara, who chose a blackand-white palette warmed by wood tones. “Cliffs Builders were also good about that. If we said we wanted to do X, Y, and Z, they would be honest and say ‘I think X and Y makes sense, but you don’t want to do Z.’” With construction completed late this summer, the Snyders are anticipating the mountain getaway experience their second home provides. “We love the community,” Tara says.

D OW N H I L L F ROM H E R E Hobby meets home space in The Cliffs at Walnut Cove
PROFESSIONAL-GRADE HOME BREW PUB Bill & Lori Clark The Cliffs at Walnut Cove
Builder: Glennwood Custom Builders Architecture: PLATT Interior Design: PLATT Home brewing has gone Downhill for Bill Clark. After acquiring a taste for the hobby out in a buddy’s garage back in Michigan, this craft beer enthusiast built a professional-grade brewery in his new home at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove. The spirited amenity exudes a definite Irish-pub-meets-Carolina-mountains vibe—there’s a game room, bar seating, and adjacent outdoor space—and the brewing process is enhanced by a designated heating system, an oversized ventilation hood, stainless steel walls, and an epoxied floor with a center drain. Clark dubbed the brewery “Downhill” in memory of his best friend and brew buddy Matt, who had earned that nickname for his hiking style on the Appalachian Trail. The men fermented a strong bond over the years via many a shared mile hiking the AT and elsewhere, as well as during the hours whiled away making beer with friends— on equipment typically set up in out-of-the-way corners of their homes. It was Downhill who first floated a what-if that took hold: What if you incorporated a true brewery into your architectural 98
CLIFFS LIVING
plans, so we could really do this right? “What if ” ultimately became “why not” and Clark tapped Glennwood Custom Builders (out of Hendersonville, North Carolina) and PLATT (from Brevard, North Carolina) to make it happen. Sadly though, Downhill never saw his idea come to fruition. “I had expected him to spend many years helping me perfect the art of brewing here,” Clark says, but his buddy died before construction on the home—and home brewery—was complete. Friends from Michigan came down for the inaugural brew in Downhill’s honor, a double IPA based on his special recipe. “He would’ve loved this. He enjoyed making beer with friends as much as he enjoyed drinking beer with friends,” Clark says. “He was instrumental in getting me excited about brewing, and now I look forward to passing along some of my own limited knowledge—and hopefully gaining some more—by brewing with new friends here in Walnut Cove.” Clark and his wife, Lori, who are parents to four adult children, moved into their early retirement home at The Cliffs in October 2020. Having an in-home brew pub is helping them meet their neighbors. “I love sharing this experience with others,” Clark says. “When the neighborhood starts to smell hops, they know I’m brewing—and I hope they know that means the door is open!”

What does one do after retiring and moving to The Cliffs? You get involved. Back in 2005, I was lucky to be one of the original five founders who established Cliffs Residents Outreach, an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit that benefits the local community. We are a 100% volunteer organization committed to working with children, our most valuable resource. We support a wide variety of student programs, with a focus centered on funding initiatives that relate to education and human services. The poverty level outside our gates is humbling. Initially, CRO started with residents supporting two public schools, where we supplied backpacks of food for families in poverty who might otherwise go hungry over the weekend. We also provided school supplies, books, classroom snacks, clothing, lice kits, and medical supplies as well as emergency crisis funding. Over the past 16 years we have expanded our scope and now annually impact more than 10,500 students. CRO started in one county and is now in four— Greenville, Oconee, Pickens, and Spartanburg. We began with two schools and are now in 14 schools and several nonprofit organizations working with children from preschool through college. Today, CRO has a presence in the communities surrounding all six of The Cliffs communities in South Carolina, with a total of about 1,000 volunteers who serve in various capacities, such as tutors and mentors. Our first fundraiser brought in $33,000; in the last 10 years, CRO has raised more than $5 million through generous donations from residents and local businesses. This funding is used to provide healthy nutrition; sponsor field trips; and purchase technology, weight room equipment, playgrounds, book

Terry Eihl, a member at The Cliffs Valley and longtime participant in Cliffs Residents Outreach, has been honored as the Travelers Rest Citizen of the Year. The award— presented by the Travelers Rest Chamber of Commerce—recognizes Eihl’s active volunteer work alongside the CRO at Slater-Marietta Elementary School in Greenville County, South Carolina, where he has chaired a mentorship program for the past 15 years in addition to tutoring students in grades K through five. Noting a student population in particular need of male involvement, Eihl has enthusiastically encouraged other men from The Cliffs to serve as mentors; a typical school year sees 50 CRO volunteers logging a collective 2,300 hours at Slater-Marietta. Pictured here, Terry Eihl celebrates his Citizen of the Year Award while flanked by his wife, Suzie, and their children Craig, Jennifer, and Stephanie.
mobiles, computer charging carts, and computer desks. In response to the pandemic, we funded COVID-safe water fountains. We also sponsor middle school robotics teams. Several of these teams have made it to state-level competition and one made it all the way to Worlds—most of the students who went to Worlds had never been on an airplane before so it was a privilege to provide this experience for them. Cliffs Residents Outreach is structured with a board of directors, officers, and representatives from The Cliffs’ six communities in South Carolina; each community has its own council, which reports to the CRO board. These individual councils identify their projects and programs, and they fundraise for their respective projects. Funds raised are controlled and stay within the individual community. Our corporate partners’ donations can be shared across communities at the direction of those organizations. Generosity helps provide magic in the lives of people who might otherwise be without hope. I believe our goal must be to find solutions
to help the total person and the best way to get there is providing caring adults to build relationships with our kids. The CRO is The Cliffs’ “Charity of Choice.” How lucky we are to have the opportunity to be agents of change within our communities, making a difference in children’s lives and their futures. I love this quote from Burke Royster, Superintendent of Greenville County Schools in Greenville, South Carolina: “Without a doubt, the entire Greenville County population owes a debt of gratitude to Cliffs Residents Outreach for their enthusiastic support of this community’s most precious resource—our children.”
