Come downtown and ride the trolley! The free service operates weekly from Thursday through Sunday. On Thursdays and Fridays, it runs from 6 to 11 PM; on Saturday, hop aboard from 10 AM to 11 PM; and on Sunday afternoons, experience it from 1 until 8 PM. The trolley runs along Main Street to the North Main area and loops back around to the West End. To ride, simply ﬂag down the trolley and the driver will stop. The City of Greenville will host the 2009 Greenville Poinsettia Christmas Parade Saturday, December 5. The parade will begin at 6 p.m. at the intersection of Augusta Street and S. It is holiday time again and in order to ensure a great time is had by all, here are some easy safety tips to put into place while you are doing one of the most popular past times of the season, shopping. Holiday shopping can be chaotic, tiring and frustrating. Jostling through crowded areas while carrying your jacket and/or purse, juggling countless bags and keeping up with your child makes you an attractive target to criminals. In addition, as parking areas fill, shoppers are often forced to park further from their destinations, sometimes in poorly lighted areas. Now that there is less daylight, you’re likely to find yourself entering stores while the sun is up and returning to their car as it’s getting dark, so make sure there are lights nearby before parking. But remember, as a courtesy and convenience to shoppers, the City of Greenville offers FREE trolley service Thursday through Sunday (see page 5 for details). Here are some simple safety tips to remember this season, these can easily keep you from having a holiday nightmare on your hands.

PREPARATION & PERSONAL SAFETY The holiday season is a time when busy people can become careless and vulnerable to theft and other holiday crime. The following tips can help you be more careful, prepared and aware during the holiday season. • Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you must shop in the evening, shop with a friend or family member. There IS safety in numbers. • Dress casually and comfortably. And avoid wearing expensive jewelry. • Visit ATM’s only at well-lighted and populated locations (only visit ATM’s during daylight hours, if possible). • Carry only the charge cards you will need. Don’t carry or flash large sums of cash. • Using debit or credit cards is much safer than carrying a lot of cash. If the vendors you will visit don’t take cards, consider obtaining traveler’s checks

which, unlike cash, can be replaced if lost or stolen. • A woman should carry her purse next to her body, with the opening (or flap) facing toward her; when walking with another person, the purse should be held between the two. • Men should carry their wallets in front or inside pockets, rather than in back pockets or his jacket. • Be aware of your surroundings, you can help keep yourself from becoming a victim. • Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. At this time of year, “con-artists” may try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money or belongings.

IN YOUR CAR & PARKING As a convenience to visitors and shoppers to downtown Greenville, parking garages are located in a variety of places around town. (In the center spread of this publication you can determine which parking lots and garages are located closest to your shopping destinations.) Because of the busy time of year and increased traffic in the heart of the city, you will probably find it easiest to utilize the parking garages. Here are a few safety tips for using parking garages and parking in general: • Take notice of lighting in the parking garage or parking lot and try to choose a spot in the brightest or best lit section.

• Consider carrying a small flashlight on your key ring or in your purse in case of poor lighting.

• Look around your vehicle for any suspicious activity. If someone is loitering around your vehicle, do not go to your car. Change your direction or return to the store until the person leaves.

• Always lock your car and make sure the windows are closed, no matter how long you’ll be gone. Lock your doors while driving as well.

• Be alert and suspicious of anyone approaching your vehicle to hand out leaflets, ask for donations, etc. Always leave the car window up.

• Avoid parking next to vans, trucks with camper shells, or vehicles with extremely dark tinted windows.

• Consider using your vehicle alarm system in case you are confronted.

• Once your car is parked, familiarize yourself with its location so you can find it without delay.

• Keep valuables out of sight. So that people won’t know where you’re storing your valuables, put them away before entering the garage.

• Have your keys in your hand before you leave the safety of your store.

• Drive slowly and follow the designated routes into and out of the garage.

• Do a quick scan inside the passenger compartment of your car, including the backseat, as well as under the car itself, before getting in to make sure

At the STORE & SHOPPING Shopping during the holiday season can present unique danger. Taking a few prevention measures can help keep your holiday season joyous, productive, and safe. • Check your credit card receipts and properly dispose of them. • Check to see you’ve been given back your card once you’ve paid for what you bought. • When walking through parking lots, be sure that you are aware of your surroundings. Walk with authority. Don’t look like a victim! • Walk in the driveways of parking lots rather than between cars. If you are pulled down between cars and cry for help it will be difficult for anyone to tell where the cries are coming from. • Among pickpockets’ favorites are revolving doors, jammed aisles, elevators, and public transportation stops and vehicles, especially at rush hour, so be aware of your surroundings. • Don’t allow your attention to become distracted from your purse or packages. • Carry the day’s most expensive purchases closest to your body, and don’t carry so much you lose the ability to react quickly. • Lock packages in the trunk out of sight if you have to leave packages in your car unattended. Avoid leaving any packages or shopping bags visible in your car. • Leave your most expensive purchases until the end of the day when you can quickly hop in your car and go directly home. • If you purchase big ticket items or large packages drive up close to the store to load them in your car.

OTHER TIPS During the chaos of the holidays, we tend to be rushed and thinking about a thousand things. It’s during these times that we need to be most aware and taking as many precautions as we can to avoid any risks or dangers. • Always carry your driver license or identification card along with limited cash, checks and/or a credit card you expect to use.

• If someone does grab your purse, let it go. You can get hurt—badly—by trying to hold on to it. You will probably lose it anyway.

• Keep a record of all of your credit card numbers in a safe place at home.

• If you are a victim of a crime, report it to police immediately.

• Always carry a cell phone. However, don’t allow the cell phone to be a distraction. Often, people can be so involved with a phone conversation that they become less aware of their surroundings, allowing themselves to be easy prey.

• Do not jaywalk. Make sure drivers see you by taking the time to cross streets at corners. During the holidays, pedestrians are more often victims of traffic accidents than at any other time of the year.

• If you must leave a key with a parking attendant, leave only your vehicle’s ignition key. Don’t leave anything attached to it, especially with your name and address. • If you have to wait for a ride, wait in a busy, welllighted place. • Don’t hesitate to notify store security if you see suspicious activity.

BRINGING HOLIDAY MAGIC

to downtown For over 20 years the St. Francis Foundation Holiday Festival has brought holiday magic to downtown Greenville. The event begins with the Festival of Lights when the St. Francis Foundation and the City of Greenville work together to create a special night where downtown Greenville dazzles with holiday lights. With a flip of a switch, Greenville comes to life in lights for the special holiday season. The Festival of Stars, featuring beautiful window displays, and the Festival of Trees, with 65 sponsored trees, begin the day after Thanksgiving and continue throughout most of the month of December. Greenville residents and visitors alike will enjoy a taste of Christmas’ past with a snow-covered village, live entertainment, wonderful tastes and treats,

and a complimentary carousel ride for the young and young-at-heart. Two traditional meals are held during the festival as well: the Teddy Bear Luncheon and the Holiday Brunch (to reserve tickets please call 864.255.1040 or 864.232.5600, respectively). The St. Francis Holiday Festival is the St. Francis Foundation’s vehicle to continue their mission of caring for the poor, sick, and dying and providing quality health care to the indigent, uninsured, and underserved in our Greenville community. Your support of the festival and other initiatives makes programs such as Bone Marrow Transplant and Hospice possible. Goodnight Moon is the children’s book that the mice idea came from. As a senior project at Christ Church Episcopal School, Jimmy Ryan proposed the idea of placing the mice downtown for children to hunt. He raised the funding and commissioned Zan Wells, local sculptor, to make the individual mice. A bronzed sculpture of the book and one mouse are mounted on the fountain in front of the Hyatt Regency hotel and the other eight mice are installed along a nine-block stretch of Main Street between the Hyatt & the Westin Poinsett hotels. Here are the hints to finding the mice: 1. Begin your search on North Main where the water flowing in and out of the hotel makes a fountain on the outside. You’ll find the father mouse, Marvin, reading his book. He can’t hide – take a good look! 2. Mother Maggie is just across, sitting where she can see Marvin. When she looks down the street, she can see their five baby mice, placed here and there, all so sweet. 3. Cross the street and walk a bit. You’ll see Marvin, Jr. at the top of the stairs where coffee lovers and computer gurus meet and poets love to count their feet. 4. Marcley’s somewhere near the plaza square. Look around. You’ll find him there. 5. Millie’s a high “high-tech” girl. You’ll really have to search, but give it a whirl. 6. Watch out! Mitch does his skateboarding in the bank’s alley. You’ll be lucky to find him; don’t dally. 7. Across the street there’s healthy stuff along the way. That’s where Melissa loves to play. 8. You’ll find Aunt Millfin where there’s old money. She’s looking at the flowers, honey. 9. Mifflin’s husband, Uncle Miles, loves to eat Italian. He’s by the rain spout. If you’ve found him, give a shout! That’s what a mouse hunt is all about!
