There is an awareness that is unleashed the moment all your senses are harmoniously content. When an expertly-prepared meal, married with perfect wines, is finished with music that moves your soul. That moment is known as Euphoria. Euphoria is a highly anticipated weekendlong event includes exclusive tasting events, cooking demonstrations and wine seminars, as well as multi-course dinners and live musical performances. Dedicated to excellence, Euphoria features domestic and international wines, celebrity chefs, master sommeliers, and national recording artists. It’s a weekend destination event that has impressed many with its passion for quality and value. Every September this event shines a spotlight on Greenville, South Carolina’s thriving Culinary and Arts Communities. Greenville, situated at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, stands out with its award-winning downtown, vast entertainment options and diverse population.
THE HISTORY
In 2006, two of Greenville’s favorite sons, recording artist Edwin McCain and restaurateur Carl Sobocinski, came together to create a forum where renowned epicurean and musical artists could come together and celebrate their passions. The result, for those in attendance who tasted, sipped, listened to and otherwise imbibed their creations was…euphoric. And as with all great stories this one comes complete with a happy ending. a n d It seems not much has changed since Shakespeare’s time. That’s why it’s John Fagan’s goal to have the Upstate Shakespeare Festival perform all 39 of Shakespeare’s plays. The festival is entering its 16th year. And as it has grown as an organization, so has the audience in its understanding of the writings that most were taught in school to fear, Fagan said. “Everybody, including me, thought Shakespeare, was something to be feared, something to be intimidated by,” said Fagan, who is in his 12th year leading the festival, which falls under the auspices of the Warehouse Theatre. “Even actors say they can’t do Shakespeare. They’re afraid of him, too.” While Fagan thinks its important that residents of the Upstate and beyond are exposed to Shakespeare as it was meant to be – performed, not read – he wants the experience to be entertaining. “We never wanted to feel like medicine that’s good for you,” he said. “The reason that Shakespeare is still done is that he does most of the work for you in his writing.” Fagan said he’s been asked often which version of Shakespeare his group used because audience members are surprised they “get it.” “Our job is to make it something the audience gets,” he said. Shakespeare was writing for a contemporary audience. His actors often wore their own clothes. “His audience knew the way an actor came out whether he was the

fool, the clown, the young lover or the king,” he said. “There was a shorthand between Shakespeare and his audience.” Fagan said the USF is discovering shorthand for their contemporary audiences. Instead of a guy walking out in tights, he walks out in baggy pants and a long shirt, he said. Sometimes the shorthand may seem a little weird to those not used to USF and Fagan’s style. To help offset the misogynistic leanings of “Comedy of Errors,” Fagan cast all the male parts with females and all the female parts with men. To make sure the production didn’t have the feel of a drag show, the men weren’t allowed to shave or speak in falsetto, and the women made no attempt to hide their curves. “As You Like It,” the Bard’s most musical comedy, was infused with Linda Ronstadt music from the late 1960s and 1970s. And in “King John,” Fagan used only chairs and costume pieces for props. The actors fought with the chairs, used them to build walls and, in the battle scenes, chairs became dead bodies. Characters that died stayed on stage and, wearing white makeup on their faces, followed the king around for the entire play, turning what Fagan called a boring history play into a ghost story. Fagan said the Upstate Shakespeare Festival wants its audience, which has grown to about 15,000 people a year, to rethink what Shakespeare is.

How to Make Your USF Experience More Enjoyable Arrive Early!
Read the Plays!
Our audiences have grown over the years and experienced USF audience members know to arrive in the park at least one hour prior to curtain in order to obtain the best locations on the lawn. Seating is available on a first come, first served basis. There are plenty of USF staff members around, so be certain to ask for the better lawn areas.
Many of our veteran audiences like to familiarize themselves with the scripts they are about to see. Because the USF likes to explore different ways of staging the shows, it is fun to see how the interpretation of the artists relates to the audiences’ perceptions.
Pack a Picnic! An outdoor theatre experience is unique in many ways. Packing a picnic supper is one delightful way to enjoy the evening. Spread a blanket and enjoy the evening with your favorite foods and beverages.
Bring a Blanket, Pillows, and/or Lawn Chairs! The Festival provides very limited seating. To ensure your comfort, bring along whatever it is you wish to sit upon for the evening. We do set aside ground areas for those who wish to sit only on blankets. Once again, arrive early to get the best areas on the lawn.
Dress for the Weather! The thermometer may say it’s sweltering and hot outside, but once the sun dips behind the trees; the Falls Park on the Reedy can get a bit chilly. Be certain to bring a light jacket or sweater so you can stay comfortable.
Watch the Weather Forecasts! If the weather turns inclement, we do have to cancel the performance. However, we have performed shows through light drizzles. We have put the show “on pause” if the rain briefly gets a bit heavier. But, Greenville summer weather being the unpredictable thing it is, we try all we can to perform our shows. If you have any questions regarding whether or not a show is being performed, please call (864) 787-4016.
Bring Friends and Family! USF productions are geared to be enjoyed be the entire family. Attending our shows has become part of many families’ summer traditions. On more than one occasion, parents have been brought to the shows as a result of the child’s enthusiastic experience of a prior viewing. Most productions have a running time of less than two hours, so they are perfect for family outings.
Stick Around After the Show! The Festival invites you to talk to favorite members of the cast after the show. Be sure to hang around afterwards to ask them about the experience and learn more about what it is we do. Many of our past performers’ favorite experiences have involved meeting with and talking to our audiences after the shows.
Visit Downtown and the West End Greenville has a great variety of restaurants, clubs, coffee houses and other evening entertainment options. Most of these are within a walking distance, or at the very least a short drive away. So when you come, plan on making a full evening of your experience by truly enjoying all that Greenville has to offer.
Bring Donations!
Be Aware of the Bugs!
Try as we might, we can’t do any of the productions with out your monetary support. If you enjoy the shows, please be generous when to company comes out at the end of the show.
Yep, there are mosquitoes. Bring along bug spray or citronella candles.
