Downtown Greenville is home to more than 90 shops and 90 restaurants. If you can’t find it here, chances are it can’t be found! Another component of Do Downtown Greenville is a focus on all things local. Shop local. Eat local. Support local. When you shop local, you help support our community. Many of our friends, neighbors, and families are employed by, or own, these businesses that bring special products, services, and variety to Greenville. Make the commitment to shop local this holiday season and know the joy of supporting our community – one of the greatest gifts of all.

Thank you to the Greenville Convention & Visitors Bureau, City of Greenville, TD Saturday Market, & Carol Stewart for contributing photos to this issue.

unintended consequence of the video and game culture created by technology advances. We are thankful that our City Council recognizes the importance of getting children away from screens and outside to play and have continued to provide funding for playgrounds and recreation programs that improve the quality of life and play for our residents.” The selected communities are making a commitment to play and physical activity by developing unique local action plans to increase the quantity and quality of play in their community. “Some of the most innovative concepts and cost-effective programs are being developed in Playful City USA communities,” says Darell Hammond, Founder and CEO of KaBOOM! and author of The New York Times Best Seller KaBOOM!: How One Man Built a Movement to Save Play. “Cities like Greenville are key allies in the fight to combat the play deficit and serve as outstanding role models for government and community leaders across the country.” Each of the 2012 Playful City USA communities demonstrated creative commitments to addressing the play deficit. A primary goal is to encourage cities and towns to share ideas, concepts and programs in an effort to increase play opportunities for children. KaBOOM! also selected Greenville for its outstanding dedication to play. Greenville’s play street event last fall created a safe space for the community to play, and socialize. A goal for 2012 is to host more play street events to involve other neighborhoods. Joint use agreements with all of the schools within the city allow access to the schools’ playgrounds during off-hours.

Today’s children spend less time playing outside than any previous generation, but 213 cities and towns, including Greenville, earned recognition from national non-profit KaBOOM! as 2012 Playful City USA communities for their efforts to increase play opportunities for children. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, play is critical to healthy brain development. It allows children to use their creativity while simultaneously developing imagination, dexterity and physical, cognitive and emotional strength. Yet today’s children spend less time playing outside than any previous generation in part because only 1-in-5 live within walking distance of a park or playground. The resulting play deficit is having profound consequences for kids physically, socially and academically. Presented by The Humana Foundation, Playful City USA is a national program advocating for local policies that increase play opportunities for children and is a key platform in combating the play deficit. KaBOOM!, the national non-profit organization dedicated to saving play, created Playful City USA in 2007 to help local governments address the play deficit and it is through mayors, city council members, parks and recreation departments, school districts and community leaders that the program succeeds in benefitting children. “The City of Greenville is honored to be selected as a Playful City USA for the second year in a row,” said Dana A. Souza, Director of Parks and Recreation. “Greenville’s selection recognizes the significant efforts the City has made to reduce the Play Deficit our children face which is an

do downtown Experience the country without leaving the city Beth Magera runs by the TD Saturday Market – literally – most every weekend. “Oh, we love it,” says Magera, an officer with the U.S. Probation Office who puts in four or five early downtown miles with her running group before heading over to the Market for a cup of gourmet West End coffee, maybe a fresh pastry or breakfast bar, and a bit of socializing in the festive, outdoor setting on Main Street at McBee. “This coffee is off the hook!” The post-run perk always puts Magera and her friends in the mood to shop. The Market

features some 50 vendors – all from a 100mile radius of City Hall – offering freshfrom-the-farm fruits and vegetables, baked goods, meats, cheeses, seafood and other specialty foods as well as handmade arts and crafts. The weekly gathering also features live music and interactive events such as chef ’s demonstrations, spotlights on seasonal crops and wellness/lifestyle tips. “This is the place to find truly genuine, local products,” says Deb Potter of Merciful

Hearts Farm. Part of the committee that launched the original Saturday Market, Potter has watched the event grow from just a handful of vendors in April 2003 to the bustling crowd of today. “The City of Greenville has really reached out to bring authentic farmers to town.” Buying seasonal produce directly from local harvesters is a wholesome choice – you get peak flavor, of course, and that means peak nutritional value, too. “It makes my day – it makes my summer, really – knowing that I can find all this fresh, healthy food for my family,” says Magera, who

typically fills her basket with a colorful array of just-picked fruits and veggies. She enjoys coming home from her run with something interesting to cook for that evening’s meal. Last Saturday, for example, she bought fresh crabcakes along with shrimp and scallops, which she sautéed in “amazingly aromatic” heirloom garlic. “The Saturday Market gives us a chance to buy food right from the farmers who grew it,” says Magera, noting a special affinity for Iszy’s Heirlooms Vegetables. “(Vendor Jeff Isbell) can tell me all about these heirloom vegetables – what to do with them; how to use them. The taste is very different from what you find in a grocery store.” »

Heirloom flavors are indeed more intense, says Isbell, and their nutritional values are higher, because they have not been hybrid-ized to speed growth or alter natural characteristics. “The seeds have been passed down from generation to generation,” he says. “They have not been tampered with by man – these vegetables come from the same source our great-grandparents used.” Originally established Fresh Produce, Specialty on E. do downtown Art in the Park as you

Festival returns to showcase original, local artwork Your portfolio isn’t the only thing that disappeared in 2008 – the crash wiped out a favorite local arts festival, too. “Art in the Park definitely fell on hard times when the recession hit,” says Rebecca Jonas, and this once-thriving event went into hiatus after 17 years of showcasing original works by the Upstate’s best painters, sculptors, photographers, metalsmiths and more. “The loss of our festival left a huge void in venues for local and regional artists.” That’s why Upstate Visual Arts (UVA) is investing plenty of creative energy to bring Art in the Park back to town. A revived celebration of local artwork is scheduled the weekend of September 22-23 with plans to fill South Main Street and Falls Park with exhibits, demonstrations and hands-on activities for all ages.

“We want to re-create the best of the previous festivals while incorporating some exciting new ideas,” says Jonas, who is serving as event director of Art in the Park. The festival’s program director is Karoline Shaffer. As in years past, artists’ booths will line South Main Street from Broad to Camperdown, giving visitors a chance to peruse, and perhaps purchase, original works in mediums such as painting, pottery, mixed media, woodworking and drawing, just to name a few. UVA members can exhibit their best works in the traditional Tent Show in Falls Park – some 300 pieces will be on display – while a nearby Fence Show gives members the opportunity to showcase their art on a smaller scale than the South Main booths. Plans also include the always-popular Children’s Make & Take area, where young

Based on the children’s book Goodnight Moon, there is a bronzed sculpture of the book and one mouse mounted on the fountain in front of the Hyatt Regency hotel. This is where you need to begin. The other eight mice are installed along a nine-block stretch of Main Street between the Hyatt & the Westin Poinsett hotels. Use these clues to find the remaining mice:

2. Mother Maggie is just across, sitting where she can see Marvin. When she looks down the street, she can see their five baby mice, placed here and there, all so sweet. 3. Cross the street and walk a bit. You’ll see Marvin, Jr. at the top of the stairs where coffee lovers and computer gurus meet and poets love to count their feet. 4. Marcley’s somewhere near the plaza square. Look around. You’ll find him there. 5. Millie’s a high “high-tech” girl. You’ll really have to search, but give it a whirl.

He’s by the rain spout. If you’ve found him, give a shout!
