Welcome to
do downtown G R E E N V I L L E
Do Downtown Greenville is an initiative of several downtown merchants, restaurants, and hotels in partnership with the Greenville Journal. Our goal is to communicate to residents and visitors alike everything our downtown has to offer. Downtown Greenville presents opportunities unlike any other with noteworthy shops, remarkable restaurants, visual and performing arts venues, beautiful green spaces, and more. The redevelopment vision of the City of Greenville is to have “a thriving Downtown which is recognized nationally as an example of a ‘state-of-the-art’ community in which to live, work, and Saffron’s is an eclectic cafe, with a welcoming outdoor patio, specializing in delicious and reasonably priced cuisine. The menu is hardly basic, and is loaded with a variety of fresh salads, flatbread wraps, sandwiches, sides, soups and specialties like seared tuna. All items are homemade, including the warm pretzel bread, buckeye cookies and chicken salad. The burgers on the menu “fly out of our door” and are wildly popular! Plus, Saffron’s offers an extensive catering menu – from lunch buffets to sit down dinners. We can feed your party of 5 to 500. We offer cold sandwiches and boxed lunches for the casual needs, to filet mignon and rock lobster for your special event. Check out the entire catering menu on-line. Whether you are in the mood to indulge in something new or just want to enjoy some old favorites, we promise to leave you truly satisfied.
play… which serves in itself as a national attraction.” Mission accomplished. Downtown Greenville is home to 90 shops and 90 restaurants. If you can’t find it here, chances are it can’t be found! Another component of Do Downtown Greenville is a focus on all things local. Shop local. Eat local. Support local. When you shop local, you help support our community. Many of our friends, neighbors, and families are employed by, or own, these businesses that bring special products, services, and variety to Greenville. Make the commitment to shop local this holiday season and know the joy of supporting our community – one of the greatest gifts of all.
Trust Saffron’s – you will NOT be disappointed!

Procession lights up Main Street on Saturday, December 4 Is it possible the Poinsettia Christmas Parade has gone to the dogs? Melinda Hoover sure hopes so! “Dogs enjoy the holidays as much as we do,” says Hoover, who is preparing Camp Bow Wow’s first-ever float for the procession that traditionally marks the beginning of Greenville’s Yuletide. As proprietor of a doggy day care and overnight camp, she has conceptualized a “12 Dogs of Christmas” theme with toys, treats, fire hydrants – in
short, “all the things dogs might look forward to for Christmas.” Accompanying Camp Bow Wow’s float will be canine companions of every shape and size, decked out in holiday costumes while walking to the beat of dog-inspired music. Hoover expects it to be a barking good time. So there’ll be dogs indeed, and plenty more, when the Poinsettia Christmas Parade lights up Main Street the evening of Saturday, Dec. 4. This year’s event – themed “The 12 Days of Christmas” – promises everything from drummers drumming, dancers dancing, horses trotting, cows a’mooing and, yes, dogs a’barking. And, as always, “there’s going to be a jolly guy in a red suit at the end of the parade,” says Will Young, special events coordinator for the

City of Greenville. “I guess everyone will have to come out to see who this guy is!” The parade begins promptly at 6PM as more than 70 groups ring in the season, either on foot, on floats, on bikes, even on a golf cart or two, starting at Shoeless Joe Plaza (intersection of Augusta and Main) and ending at the corner of North and Main. It’ll take about 90 minutes to watch the entire parade, which includes high school and college marching bands; youth sports clubs and dance troupes; business, civic and church organizations; elected officials; police and fire units; and much, much more.
Great Gifts. Great Prices.

While some groups are new to the parade, others have been participating for years. Bob Jones University, for example, has long awed spectators with its beautifully inspired floats. “Every year we try to do something completely new and different,” says David Lovegrove, head of BJU’s creative services department. This time, expect a stunningly-lit display – the float incorporates more than half a mile of
lights – along with animated figures. Some choir members will ride the float while others walk alongside and interact with the crowd. “We strive for a high level of quality, for the kind of float you’d expect to see in a televised parade,” Lovegrove says. “We truly enjoy doing this. I think we have as much fun as the spectators.” With roots in the 1920s, the Poinsettia Christmas Parade is now sponsored by the City of Greenville and the Upstate chapter of Blue Star Mothers. Paradegoers are encouraged to help Blue Star Mothers collect care packages for America’s active duty troops. Requested donations include: stationery; reading materials; pre-paid phone cards; toiletries; music and games; food, candy, coffee and dry drink mixes; and other items such as disposable cameras, flashlights and sunglasses. Event organizers suggest you
also bring warm outerwear and/or blankets as well as a comfortable chair. Parking is available in lots and garages throughout downtown, but with an expected crowd of 30,000 it’s a good idea to arrive early. “In recent years the Main Street Bridge has not been a crowded area, so that’s definitely a place to go,” says Young, who encourages parade-goers to consider watching from the Falls Park area. “You can still see all the floats and it’s right at the beginning of the parade.”

Looking for a family outing that’ll light up the holidays without lightening your wallet? Come see the St. Francis Festival of Trees! This beloved tradition – which, by the way, is absolutely free – has charmed visitors for 20 years with an array of beautifully decorated trees displayed in the lobbies of downtown hotels. Each evergreen is sponsored by an Upstate business, then trimmed by employees, by area school children or by local interior designers, florists or decorators. The 2010 Festival features 65 trees on exhibit through Dec. 27 at the Hyatt Regency Greenville, Hampton Inn & Suites RiverPlace and, new this year, Courtyard by Marriott. Every one sparkles with its own creativity – some elegantly traditional, some smartly modern, others delightfully whimsical. “Coming out to see all these marvelously decorated trees is a great way for families to spend an afternoon,” says Eileen Bunch of Sew Creative Teens & Kids. “This is always such a happy event.” Sew Creative students decorate a Festival tree every year, conceptualizing a theme, then designing and hand-making the ornaments. In 2009 they created the Pepsi tree – a re-imagining of Candy Land complete with character dolls, sweets and garland representing game board squares – and earned such phenomenal praise the company requested their services again. Not to give too much away – come out to the Festival and see it for yourself – but the 2010 Pepsi tree is all about a “Rocking ‘50s Holiday” so expect some pink Cadillacs, vinyl records, burgers and a tree stand covered with, of course, a poodle skirt. “I marvel at their creativity,” Bunch says of the student-inspired, student-produced project. “What
makes our tree so different is that everything – everything – is done by the kids. I’m just the facilitator. … I never know what they’re going to come up with each year. They always manage to amaze me!” Walking through the Festival of Trees is an exercise in delight, so prepare to be dazzled by all the designers’ originality. Here’s a tree graciously adorned with ribbons, glass balls and twinkling lights, while there’s another bedecked in characters from a beloved children’s story. This tree reflects a sponsor’s product or service while that one shows a new interpretation of an age-old scene. Festival of Trees sponsors range from manufacturers to service providers to medical groups – and everything in between – with proceeds supporting Bon Secours’ mission of
