do downtown

G R E E N V I L L E

Do Downtown Greenville is an initiative of several downtown merchants, restaurants, and hotels in partnership with the Greenville Journal. Our goal is to communicate to residents and visitors alike everything our downtown has to offer. Downtown Greenville presents opportunities unlike any other with noteworthy shops, remarkable restaurants, visual and performing arts venues, beautiful green spaces, and more. The redevelopment vision of the City of Greenville is to have “a thriving Downtown which is recognized nationally as an example of a ‘state-of-the-art’ community in which to live, work, and play… which serves in itself as a national attraction.” Mission accomplished. Downtown Greenville is home to more than 90 shops and 90 restaurants. If you can’t find it here, chances are it can’t be found! Another component of Do Downtown Greenville is a focus on all things local. Shop local. Eat local. Support local. When you shop local, you help support our community. Many of our friends, neighbors, and families are employed by, or own, these businesses that bring special products, services, and variety to Greenville. Make the commitment to shop local this holiday season and know the joy of supporting our community – one of the greatest gifts of all. Thank you to JHM Hotels, Kristy Adair, and Channellheimer Oompah Band for photos contributed to this issue.

David Drake: Potter and Poet of Edgefield District on view through January 19, 2014

Asked if she has a favorite story about geocaching, Tracy Bond replies with an enthusiastic “I do!” Which, as it turns out, was also her answer on that particular adventure. More on which in just a moment. Bond got into geocaching – pronounced jee’-oh-kash-ing – about ten years ago, back when she and her husband, Johnson, were still dating. “It’s something that’s just so fun and easy to do,” Bond says, describing a slightly addictive game of hide-and-seek that combines GPS technology with the great outdoors. Participants can place a cache – a sealed, hidden container of any size or shape – anywhere in the world, pinpoint its GPS

coordinates, then share its existence online at www.geocaching.com. Seekers, armed with a GPS-enabled device, try to locate it. Every cache includes, at minimum, a logsheet for finders to sign; some also contain little trinkets for trade within geocaching’s takeone, leave-one code of honor. There’s more to the seek than simply typing numbers into a GPS app on your smartphone, though. “The coordinates get you close, but most of the time you still have to really hunt,” she says, explaining she and Johnson once found a micro-cache magneted inside a cannon in Charleston’s Battery Park. Indeed, caches vary from tiny pill boxes to large buckets and many are stashed in out-of-the-way places.

Experience the powerful story of David Drake. An enslaved African-American, David Drake learned to read and write, dangerous and even illegal skills for a slave to possess. Drake openly expressed his literacy and his literary skills by inscribing original poems on many of the utilitarian works he created.

Wizards of Pop: Sabuda and Reinhart October 5 – December 31 Celebrated children’s book creators Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart combined their talents to create beloved and remarkable pop-up books. This exhibition, organized by the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature, features 80 original works from more than 16 of the duo’s dynamic picture and pop-up books.

Caching In at Falls Park A cache, named “Liberty” Rocks...”Reedy” Falls, was found by Ryan Adair using the GPS coordinates N 34° 50.673 W 082° 24.133, and details elaborating on the location from geocaching.com, including this additional (decrypted) hint: “for this Reedy hide..., within Humpty’s home, is where I abide! Rocks below the rail’s end.”

“You don’t always find it, but that’s part of what makes it interesting,” Bond says. “Geocaching takes you places you never knew about. You find things you typically wouldn’t see. We’ve done a lot of really good hikes.” The Bonds both work downtown, so they enjoy scouting out caches in the central business district. “It’s amazing how many there are right around Greenville,” she says. The couple has also geocached on out-of-town weekends and vacations in other countries. “There are geocaches everywhere.” Indeed, this high-tech scavenger hunt – launched in May 2000 by a computer consultant in Portland, Oregon – boasts some 2.2 million active geocaches around the world, according to geocaching.com, and more than 6 million participants of all ages. Kids love the thrill of the hunt – and because it gets them outdoors, their parents love it, too. “This is a great way to engage with our girls,” says Tedd Garner, who pursues the hobby with his tweens Mason and Katy. “It’s a fun chance

to explore places we might not otherwise have found. Wherever we go, we check the (geocaching) app to see if there’s anything close by we can try to find.” The Garners have geocached all around Greenville, particularly in Conestee and Furman University, and sometimes simply when they’re out and about at a restaurant, a store, a sporting event. Garner’s girls especially like caches with tradeable items – they’ve picked up, and left behind, sercies such as stickers, toys and dime-store rings. “I keep looking for one with a winning lottery ticket,” Garner jokes. “It’s kinda neat because geocaches are all over the place,” he explains. “This is a fun, easy thing to do with kids. We love it.” Chris Pare – who got turned onto geocaching several years ago by his brother – agrees. “My kids enjoy it, and I have so much fun watching them hunt around,” he says. “It’s really just about spending time together.” Geocaches are rated by level of difficulty and terrain, Pare points out, noting some offer a “park and grab” simplicity that’s ideal for young children whilst others require a complexity of skills ranging from puzzlesolving to rock climbing to SCUBA diving. His son Jackson and daughter Hayden

f otob k o o@ est r e b o f t k @

have made finds as close to home as their neighborhood sign. “Some caches are tricky, some are pretty obvious,” says Pare, recalling one that was under a rock tucked into a knot in a tree. “What’s really neat is you are finding things that most people don’t even know are there.” Keeping uninformed “muggles” from inadvertently discovering – or worse, moving – a geocache requires seekers to be somewhat surreptitious, Pare says: “You have to be kinda stealthy, especially if the cache is hidden in a high-traffic area.” Speaking of stealthy, here’s Tracy Bond’s favorite geocaching anecdote. She and Johnson were in Charleston to celebrate New Years Eve 2005 when he suggested seeking out a (supposed) cache at Colonial Lake. Per Johnson’s coordinates, Tracy found a box in a bush beside the lake. “I looked inside and said, ‘Oh my goodness. We found someone’s diamond!’” Tracy recalls with a laugh. “It never occurred to me it might be MY engagement ring until he got down on his knee and asked if I wanted to marry him.” Just proving people sometimes find happiness in unexpected places.

do downtown Oompah Abounds! NOMA Square to host rollicking Oktoberfest Everyone loves the toe-tapping, thigh-slapping, hand-clapping energy of an enthusiastic oompah band – especially the musicians themselves. “Oh, we keep ourselves entertained, too,” says Fabio Mann, a trumpeter with the popular Channellheimer Oompah Band. With so much dancing, impromptu improv and audience interaction going on, “there’s just never a dull moment!” A regional favorite for its traditional Bavarian repertoire interspersed with Germanized variations of American tunes, Channellheimer ups the musical ante with alphorn demonstrations, dance lessons, contests and sing-a-longs. “Everybody has so much fun,” Mann says, noting his ensemble is just as likely to play a chicken dance as a polka. This engaging oompah quartet is highlighting downtown Greenville’s upcoming Oktoberfest at NOMA Square. Slated for Oct. 1-6, the new-to-Main-Street festival features German food – think pretzels, Bratwurst, schnitzel sliders, Reuben fritters and German potato salad – amidst a traditional biergarten with beer benches and twinkling
