There’s No Place Like Home Home is a haven of comfort, love, fond memories, and security. Really there’s no place like it. In fact, more and more frequently, home is where people prefer to be as they age, surrounded by familiar things such as their own bed, their family photos, and their pets. But, what happens when an elderly person, living at home begins to need assistance with daily tasks? What if family members live far away or have other commitments, such as careers or families of their own? Fortunately, advance planning can help you and your loved ones prepare for such situations. For many families, home care is becoming an increasingly viable option. Home care refers to a wide range of health and social services provided in the home to recovering, disabled, elderly, or terminally ill individuals who are in need of medical, social, or therapeutic treatment and/or assistance with activities of daily living. Depending on the individual’s needs, home care services may be provided by an individual or a team of specialists on a part-time, intermittent, or hourly basis. Frequently, home care involves assistance with cooking and cleaning, running errands, or driving to and from medical appointments. Or, it might also involve nursing care, occupational therapy, or other medical assistance. The need for home care is increasing for a variety of reason. First, our elderly population is increasing, and a growing number

of older individuals are choosing to remain in their own home rather than moving to an assisted living facility or nursing home. In addition, advances in surgical techniques and new drug therapies have shortened the average length of a hospital stay, but individuals often need continuing care once they return home. Finally, home care is generally less expensive than care provided in a hospital, or skilled nursing facility, especially when only custodial (or non-medical) care is required.
WHO PAYS FOR HOME CARE? Home care services may be paid for directly by the patient and his or her family or through a variety of private, community, or Federal sources, such as Medicare or Medicaid. Traditional health insurance policies typically cover some home care services for acute needs, but benefits for longterm services vary and generally have a cost-sharing provision. Personal care services may not be covered at all. However, long term care insurance covers a variety of long term care expenses including many home care expenses. This may be something you want to further explore. More and more often, home is where people prefer to be as they age. It’s familiar. It’s comfortable. Indeed, there’s no place like it. Advance planning may allow your loved one to receive care in the comfort of his or her own home. Be sure to talk with your loved ones today.
