Concerns over proposed West End apartments SHERRY JACKSON | STAFF

sjackson@communityjournals.com About 50 West End residents voiced concerns Tuesday evening at a neighborhood meeting to hear plans from a developer on an apartment complex to be built on the property where the Pendleton Street Baptist Church currently sits on South Main Street.

Brian Schick, with Charlotte-based Woodfield Investments, presented plans for a five-story (six stories at one end of Main Street due to a basement level needed to address the slope of the land), 272-unit, Class A apartment complex with units wrapping around a 423-space interior parking deck.

Schick encouraged attendees to look at the firm’s first project in the area – Innovation Apartment Homes, located on the Millennium Campus – to see what to expect.

The West End Neighborhood Association has created an online petition about the project and was still collecting signatures this week prior to the baseball games at Fluor Field. The petition outlines eight requests for modification to the developer’s current known plans for the site.

In response to the petition, Schick said Woodfield had already made several design modifications before the meeting. More brick was added to the exterior, and a rooftop terrace was also realigned to face more towards Main Street rather than over homes along Rhett Street, he said.

Schick said a request to limit the height of the building to the height of the nearby Fluor Field/Liberty Taproom buildings has already been met. That building is about 55 to 65 feet high,

The church won city approval last month for a zoning change from C-3, regional commercial district, to C-4, central business district, which allows a denser, more urban-type development. Schick told Tuesday’s crowd that the C-4 zoning allows for no height restrictions, no setbacks and no parking requirements, but that Woodfield wants to be a good neighbor.

Schick said church officials made it clear in discussions with Woodfield that the church didn’t want retail, large offices or nightlife; it wanted a compatible use that would add more “neighbors to the neighborhood.”

The leasing, fitness and community center of the complex would be located at the corner of Main Street to “give it a feel of retail,” he said. Also, first-floor

Residents expressed concerns that the absence of retail would discourage people from walking further past Fluor Field toward future development that may happen along Pendleton Street, which could impact development of the Village of West Greenville.

Schick said another key component in the discussion with the church was to have a significant buffer between the property the church is keeping and the new development. Included is a 15foot, heavily landscaped pedestrian walkway and dog walk area.

Schick said Woodfield not only contracts for a daily cleanup service but also requires residents with pets to sign an agreement and submit a sample of their pets’ DNA. Problems can be tracked to the pet owner, who will be fined.

Schick said the plans will be put into the city’s new 3-D modeling software and be presented at the Sept. 3 Design Review Board meeting. Schick said they will also be submitting a sun study to see how shade will affect existing homes in the area.

Residents also voiced concerns over the proposed rental prices of the apartments, which are projected to be from $975 for a studio to $2,500 a month for a threebedroom unit.

The application and plans will go in front of the Design Review Board at the Sept. 3 meeting, 4 p.m., at City Hall.

amorris@communityjournals.com Greenville’s local hockey team has a new name. Owner Fred Festa and team representatives announced Wednesday that the team, once the Road Warriors, will now be known as the Greenville Swamp Rabbits.

The new moniker was chosen to increase the team’s ties to the community and references the historic train line that once ran from central Greenville to northern Greenville County, said general manager Chris Lewis.

The new name will allow the team “to ingrain ourselves into Greenville and its history,” said Lewis.

The team signed a new five-year lease with the Bon Secours Wellness Arena earlier this year and the timing was right to rebrand, according to Festa, who is chair-

man and CEO of W.R. Grace and Co. He purchased the team in 2012.

Festa said Wednesday the team began thinking about rebranding after signing the new lease.

“The Road Warriors never connected,” he said, adding that some people still called the team The Grrrowl. After reviewing nearly 100 potential names, “This one popped early,” said Festa. The familiar name “makes us Greenville’s hockey team,” Lewis said.

When the announcement came, Festa said though it was difficult to see their faces in the darkened arena, he could tell that some people were smiling and others had dropped jaws.

“I think it’s going to turn some heads,” Gratz said of the new name. “We’re going to bring a ferocity to the Swamp Rabbit name.”

“He’s a little fierce, this rabbit,” Festa said of the team’s new logo.

The team is associated with the National Hockey League’s New York Rangers and the American Hockey League’s Hartford Wolf Pack. The Greenville Swamp Rabbits play their first game of the season on Oct. 23 against the North Charleston-based South Carolina Stingrays.

A salute to the quiet heroes IN MY OWN WORDS

For 75 years, Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative has built a corporate culture focused on community involvement and volunteerism. On Sept. 10, to celebrate our 75th anniversary and support the communities we serve, Blue Ridge Electric will honor 75 area individuals as “Bolts of Brightness.”

These are the quiet, everyday heroes who selflessly give back to their neighbors and the community to improve the lives of others. To salute these outstanding individuals, Blue Ridge Electric will donate $500 to the charity of each winner’s choice.

Among these unassuming heroes are people like Martha and Jenna, two friends who have helped raise more than $100,000 for Safe Harbor in Oconee County to help build a shelter for victims of domestic violence. Over the past decade, these two Bolts of Brightness have organized countless grass-roots fund-

raisers, participated in speaking engagements and hosted gatherings to educate, illuminate and effect change. Their hard work, sincerity and determination not only helped build this much-needed facility, it also inspired others to join their cause and make a difference.

Another Bolt of Brightness is Betty, a retired teacher, volunteer, community organizer and proponent of the arts in Pickens who introduced traditional dance and instrument classes for children in her community by creating the Young Appalachian Musicians program.

Betty has inspired hundreds of children at a dozen schools through an additional after-school educational program dedicated to teaching dance, music and the arts.

There’s also Brian, a businessman, father and Eagle Scout who leads an outstanding local Cub Scout program in his free time. He further spearheaded the renovation of the local scouting facility in Westminster by leading fundraisers and organizing volunteer groups.

These few stories of volunteerism, compassion and determination are just the tip of the iceberg.

Among our neighbors and 64,000 members across Blue Ridge Electric’s service area are hundreds of similar stories of quiet heroism.

In addition to celebrating these Bolts of Brightness, we are proud that Blue Ridge Electric employees also take full advantage of the opportunity to volunteer to help improve the communities where we work and live. The ever more anxious child IN MY OWN WORDS

“Many in this college generation have been raised in a culture of conformity and high expectations. Parents have given their children every opportunity to enrich themselves, to excel, to become super kids. Today’s college students are more driven to succeed than any generation before them – and more likely to break down.”

The above quotation is from a book published in 2005, “The College of the Overwhelmed,” co-authored by Dr. Richard

Kadison, chief of mental health services at Harvard University. This is seldom discussed in our society today because we are basically an achievement-oriented culture that strives for perfection in everything, including raising our children.

Unfortunately, our young people now suffer from this same need to be perfect, which often translates into anxiety, depression, self-imposed unhappiness or even more serious manifestations such as selfharm or harming others.

Having worked at Furman for 22 years as vice president for student services (1985-2007), I had

the opportunity to witness this transformation that Kadison writes about and is prevalent throughout higher education.

The fastest-growing service provided to students in higher education is mental health counseling. Most schools have increased the number of campus counselors to meet this need, but too often still cannot meet student demand. Thus, many schools cap the number of times per term students can see a campus counselor before they must be referred to off-campus resources.

Not only are the numbers of students seeking or needing counseling increasing every year, but so are the numbers of students with serious emotional difficul-

This is an increase from 37.4 percent in 2012 and up from 16 percent in 2000.

Sitting at the corner of one of Greenville’s busiest intersections, the venerable Augusta Street fire station is a clear sign of days past.

The two-story, 60-year-old brick building’s bays are too small to accommodate today’s fire trucks, forcing the city to special order trucks that can fit into bays designed for older models. Firefighter living quarters are on the second floor, with no fire protection between floors. The building has no sprinkler system and the second-story sleeping quarters’ windows are sealed shut.

This past fall, I was invited by several schools to address these issues with parents, and to talk with many of the counselors in the Greenville County elementary and middle schools. This is a highly professional group of dedicated individuals under the excellent leadership of

Rob Rhodes, director of school counseling services for Greenville County. Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, many of the counselors are seeing students with anxiety or other mental health issues as early as third grade. The good news is they now have fewer administrative duties and greater time for counseling.

So why are young people under so much stress? The answer relates to three underlying factors that interact to cause

student distress: societal expectations, the overuse/misuse of technology, and parents not fully understanding the intricacies of the world their children face on a day-to-day basis.

“The Hurried Child” by Dr. David Elkind is even more applicable in 2015 than it was when first published in 1981. We are now a “hurried society” and our children are often the ones who suffer from our compulsive, excessive busyness to

achieve perfection in everything we do.

St. Francis calls for collaboration on EMS GHS willing to meet again ‘on this issue’

Questions have emerged about the availability of patient choice should the Greenville Health System (GHS) assume authority for EMS operations. For many conditions, county EMS now routes patients to a certain hospital based on the presenting need:

amorris@communityjournals.com Bon Secours St. Francis Health System publicly presented its case for operational collaboration during a special Greenville County Council meeting Tuesday about a proposed takeover of EMS by Greenville Health System (GHS).

So many people packed the conference room, the public hearing was moved to council chambers.

St. Francis officials spoke about how an EMS run by one health care system would affect the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and accountable care organizations (ACO), a group of health care providers that collaborate and are measured on quality and delivery.

A county staff presentation in June proposed giving GHS operational authority over EMS, with the county contributing roughly $1.5 million a year as part of a 10-year contract with GHS. Johnna Reed, vice president of population health for St. Francis, said where EMS transports a patient could affect how health systems receive payment for a patient’s total care under the ACO model. She encouraged collaboration to avoid fragmented care.

“Patients don’t travel to one health system, whether it’s green or blue,” she told the council. “We want to co-lead it [EMS]. We just don’t want to be a passenger on the bus.”

Several times at Tuesday’s hearing, St. Francis spokespeople called into question whether their health system would have any sort of influence on the EMS advisory board included in the staff proposal. With as little input as St. Francis has had in the discussion so far, St. Francis COO Dan Duggan said, “why should St. Francis trust patient choice will be preserved?”

Councilwoman Lottie Gibson objected to the lengthy, behind-the-scenes research on the issue, none of which reached the council’s Public Safety committee before the presentation of a totally completed proposal to council.

FUNDING CONCERNS EMS and communications operations are a large part of the county’s budget, approximately $16 million annually, and both have lost roughly $5 million annually, according to the county. Projected annual losses range from $3.6 million to $4.3 million over the next four years, according to figures presented by county administrator Joe Kernell this week.

St. Francis CEO Craig McCoy urged council to consider a not-for-profit joint venture model that would operate EMS and include the county along with both health systems.

“Let us fund the shortfall,” offered McCoy, who also asked council to require the health care systems to collaborate.

Council members questioned Kernell about why he recommended the oneoperator model. Councilman Lynn Ballard said all he has learned about a mobile integrated health care practice (MIHP)

“At the county’s request, GHS has met several times on this issue with the county administrator and representatives from Bon Secours St. Francis Health System. If the county administrator wishes to convene another meeting, we will certainly attend and participate.”

Kernell reiterated his belief that it is in the county’s best interest for a single entity to operate EMS. The county can always cancel the contract and patient choice will always be protected, he said.

Having the two competing health systems equal partners at the head of the table would prove problematic, Kernell said. “It is difficult to operate with two bosses,” he said, warning such an arrangement requires “two willing participants” and “could cause a stalemate.”

Councilman Jim Burns drew chuckles when he replied to Kernell, “With all due respect, you have 12 bosses.”

Councilman Sid Cates asked whether the motivation to make a change was based on saving the taxpayers money, to which Kernell replied that it was “to ensure the best health care coverage” for residents.

POTENTIAL FOR COLLABORATION The county-run EMS operation is award-winning, but Kernell told the council he is unsure whether the county could take care to the next level in light of changes wrought by the ACA and potentially diminishing revenue.

GHS chief medical officer Dr. Angelo Sinopoli said in June that operating EMS is the next logical step for GHS since the health system has provided EMS medical oversight for years and operates a nurse triage program. GHS officials have said in the past that they do not want to collaborate with another health system on the EMS proposal.

about keeping people out of the emergency room. It’s about decreasing our emergency volume, it’s about providing better health care for the community.”

Councilman Willis Meadows said the heads of St. Francis and GHS must meet without council present and come up with ways to collaborate and work together. He said he intends to make a motion to that effect at Tuesday’s regular council meeting.

If the two health systems cannot come up with a way to cooperate, Meadows said council should take a look at the entire operation, including management and advisement. St. Francis’ offer to help pay for the operation’s shortfall is an attractive one, he said.

Council Chairman Bob Taylor said collaboration would be beneficial, but he remains skeptical that it will happen.

“We can’t make them do anything …

I’ve had them in the same room a couple of times,” he said. “With a board to account to and the philosophy of their hospital, maybe one or the other is not willing to give in.”

McCoy said after the meeting that he was grateful for the chance to educate council on how EMS fits into the ACA and ACO structure. On the potential for collaboration, he said, “I welcome the opportunity for a one-on-one meeting.”

Ballard commented that the crowd indicated “EMS is important to those in Greenville County” and he saw the staff proposal as the start of a discussion rather than an agreement.

Taylor said he hopes for a council vote on any EMS changes in September. “We will be at the table regardless of what the arrangement is,” he said.

Greenville County Council is scheduled to meet at 6 p.m. on Sept. 1 at County Square.

clandrum@communityjournals.com Northwood Little League’s historic World Series trip may have skidded to an end after two losses this week, but the team scheduled to return home Thursday afternoon came back a winner.

The scrappy, happy team of 11- and 12-year-olds from Taylors became the first team from South Carolina to ever win a Little League World Series game when it defeated a team from Rhode Island in a first-round game marked by a no-hitter by pitcher Alex Edmondson.

While the next two games ended in Northwood losses, bringing the team’s season to a close, a national television audience saw a team that never quit, battled back from adversity and enjoyed the experience.

In its second-round game on Sunday,

Northwood fell behind home state team and crowd favorite Lewisberry, Penn., a team that up until then had won every game this season by seven runs or more, 6-0 after two innings.

But Northwood rallied and pulled ahead for the first time in the game in the top of the sixth inning when Brock Myers hit a two-out, three-run triple to go ahead 8-6. But Lewisberry rallied in the bottom of the sixth and won on a walkoff double.

Northwood was eliminated from the

World Series on Tuesday when it lost to Bowling Green, Ky., 4-3. Northwood fell behind 3-0 in the first inning. A tworun home run by Braden Golinski trimmed the deficit to one.

In the fourth inning, Northwood loaded the bases. Ryan Chapman hit a grounder to shortstop that was initially ruled a double play. But the call was overturned when replay showed Chapman beat the throw to first. During the next at-bat, Northwood attempted a double steal but base runner Kip Johnson was tagged out at home.

Kentucky scored the winning run in the fifth on a bloop infield single. Northwood got a base runner on in the sixth but couldn’t score.

The team was scheduled to arrive at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport Thursday at 3 p.m. A crowd of supporters was expected to loudly welcome them home.

Scott opposes transferring Gitmo prisoners to SC BENJAMIN JEFFERS | STAFF

bjeffers@communityjournals.com Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) said last Thursday he strongly opposes the possibility of moving prisoners housed in Guantanamo Bay to the mainland United States.

The Pentagon is looking at the Naval brig in Charleston as one of the potential locations for the prisoners. Another possible site announced by the Pentagon is Fort Leavenworth in Kansas.

“Can you imagine what would happen if we made South Carolina a destination for terrorists who are too bad to be returned to their own countries?” Scott told reporters in Greenville. “We would be attracting folks who are supportive or empathetic with these terrorists to a state.”

Scott was in Greenville attending an event hosted by the Greenville County Republican Woman at the Poinsett Club.

“Why would we move [the prisoners]

from Gitmo? What is the compelling reason?” Scott said.

President Barack Obama promised since he took office to close the controversial prison. A reported 116 men remain there.

The Defense Department said it plans after Labor Day to present Congress with SCOTT a proposal to close Guantanamo Bay. At a press conference last week, Gov. Nikki Haley also decried the possibility of the state’s housing the prisoners.

“Even though the president signed this on his first day in office, Congress has never given him the support to move these terrorists into any of our states,” she said. “We are absolutely drawing a line that we are not going to allow any

terrorists to come into South Carolina.”

Scott said that anyone who is determined an enemy combatant should not be on American soil.

“There is no plan or study that shows transferring prisoners from Guantanamo Bay to South Carolina or any other domestic location will make America safer,” he said in a statement last week. “It is unbelievable that the president believes they need to assess whether the Naval Brig, which is right next to an elementary school and a residential neighborhood, as well as just a short drive from one of the biggest tourist destinations in the world, is a better option for housing dangerous terrorists than Guantanamo Bay.” Members of the Kansas delegation and Scott are working together to fight plans for transferring the prisoners, he said.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) also opposes the moving the prisoners to Charleston.

“If more moderates and Republicans would just allow themselves to listen to his message, to realize their circumstances, then they would feel an affinity [for him],” Frank Contreras of Ashville said.

“Up until Bernie Sanders I had considered not voting for anybody at all.”

Catherine Wesner of Easley said Sanders is a better fit for her ideologically than Clinton.

“I don’t know if Bernie can win, though. That’s the problem,” she said.

The Vermont senator and self-described socialist drew around 2,800 people during a stop in Greenville, according to his campaign. His first presidential campaign stop to the Palmetto State brought out an enthusiastic crowd cheering loudly after almost every line of the Vermont senator’s stump speech.

Much of that speech attacked the “top 1 percent” of Americans.

“It is not acceptable to me that while the wealthiest people in this country become much, much wealthier, kids here in South Carolina and all over this country go hungry, lack decent child care, lack decent educational opportunities, lack decent housing,” he said. “That is not the kind of America we will continue.”

Many in the crowd resonated with Sanders’ opposition to the U.S. Supreme Court decision in favor of Citizens United, allow-

ing corporations to donate unlimited amounts of money on political activities not directly associated with campaigns.

According to Sanders, his campaign has received contributions from 400,000 individuals with an average contribution of $31.20, highlighting his distance from large financial backers.

“He’s not bought by anyone,” said Polly Iyer of Spartanburg.

Her son, Matt Iyer, said, “He says the No. 1 challenge for this generation and young people is Citizens United; he’s absolutely right.”

THE NEWS IN BRIEF POLICE SHOOTER ARRESTED AFTER CHASE A man accused of shooting at Greenville County deputies after a two-county chase has been arrested.

Randolph Martinez Burton faces charges of attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a violent felony, failure to stop for a blue light and possession of a stolen vehicle.

A Greenville County deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop of a pickup truck near Augusta Road and I-85 on Aug. 14. The driver did Burton not stop and the deputy decided not to pursue the vehicle.

A Highway Patrol trooper tried to stop the vehicle after it continued into Anderson County. The driver did not stop and a pursuit began. The driver began shooting at the

pursuing trooper, according to Sheriff’s Office spokesman Jonathan Smith. The pursuit went back into Greenville County and the driver fired shots at Greenville County deputies involved in the chase.

The driver eventually crashed the truck and fled into the woods near Ridge Road.

The driver escaped that night but investigators identified Burton as the driver.

At the time of his arrest, Burton also had 15 outstanding warrants.

SCHOOL DISTRICT BUYS LAND FOR 2 SCHOOLS Two landlocked city schools will be getting a little more room with two land purchases approved by the Greenville County School Board at its meeting Tuesday night.

At Stone Academy, 0.237 acres at 801 Townes St. will be used for future parking and use. The land cost $185,567.

Summit Drive Elementary will use 2.604 acres on Chick Spring Road and Solomon Circle for future site access. The school board approved the $100,000 purchase.

TEACHER CHARGED WITH CRUELTY A teacher at Kiddie Academy in Simpsonville has been charged with cruelty to children after an incident at the school.

Sandra Lorayne Teska was charged after the father of a 5-year-old boy went to the front desk of the Law Enforcement Center to file an incident report. The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office’s Crimes Against Children unit investigated the case.

The arrest warrant said Teska forced the child’s head to the floor Teska and caused a small bruise on his eye.

Teska was released on a $1,000 surety bond.

COACH SUSPENDED AFTER ASSAULT PLEA Greenville County Schools placed a Greenville High teacher and coach on leave Tuesday after discovering he had pleaded guilty to third-degree assault.

Richard Singleton, a business education teacher and assistant football coach, pleaded guilty on Aug. 18.

An arrest warrant said Singleton was in a verbal altercation with a woman on April 14. The warrant said he pushed the woman onto a pool table “with the intent to cause her injury.” A burglary charge Singleton was dropped.

School district spokesman Oby Lyles said Singleton had reported to the principal a personal incident in which he was charged. A preliminary investigation into the incident led school district officials to believe the charges would be dropped, Lyles said in a statement. The investigation did not uncover facts that would indicate a need to remove Singleton from the classroom, Lyles said.

After district officials learned Singleton pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor charge, he was immediately placed on leave pending a review of the circumstances surrounding his conviction, Lyles said.

University of South Carolina faculty received $242.8 million in sponsored award funding in 2015, a 5.5 percent increase over 2014, school officials said.

USC received $156.8 million in federal research awards. The university’s top federal award sponsors include the National Institutes of Health at $46.6 million, the Department of Health and Human Services at $43.2 million and the National Science Foundation at $12.4 million. ‘Super lice’ in SC 25 states see treatmentresistant bugs APRIL A. MORRIS | STAFF

amorris@communityjournals.com They are called “super,” but a case of head lice is anything but.

Just in time for students to return to school, a study recently presented to the American Chemical Society’s national meeting revealed that mutated lice resistant to over-the-counter treatments were discovered in 25 states, including South Carolina.

“We are the first group to collect lice samples from a large number of populations across the U.S.,” said Kyong Yoon, Ph.D., of Southern Illinois University.

“What we found was that 104 out of the 109 lice populations we tested had high levels of gene mutations, which have been linked to resistance to pyrethroids,” which are commonly used to treat head lice.

The mutations are “not really a surprise,” said Dr. Jeremy Byrd, pediatrician and internal medicine doctor with Heritage Pediatrics and Internal Medicine Simpsonville.

Resistance can stem also from misdiagnosis and overtreatment, he said.

Pyrethroids are a first-line treatment and lice can be controlled using a different regimen, he said. A different type of treatment, malthion, is not used in the United Kingdom and Europe, said Byrd, because of resistance. Dr. Steve Newman of Poinsett Family Practice said prescription treatments include Lindane and Sklice lotion, which so far have proven effective.

Head lice are insects and to stop an infestation, both the live lice and eggs or nits must be killed.

Suffocation treatments using substances like oils, mayonnaise or conditioner may work, said Byrd, but it takes four to six hours for several days in a row and then children are left with the problem of removing the oils from their hair.

An extreme measure is simply shaving the head, he said.

Prevention tips • Don’t share: brushes, combs, hair accessories, hats, helmets, scarves, towels and even earbuds • Avoid head-to-head contact • Check out SC Department of Health and Environmental Control’s post at blog. scdhec.gov or the Centers for Disease Control at cdc.gov/parasites/lice/head.

A heated air treatment, called the LouseBuster, can be used to dry out lice and their eggs and takes about 30 minutes, according to the manufacturer.

Newman said heat treatments could create a “toxic environment” for nits, but he cannot say how effective it is compared to chemical treatments.

In the future, resistance to prescription treatments could become an issue, Newman said. “The more you use a product, there is more of a chance of mutation and resistance.”

Avoiding head lice if possible is the best bet, said Byrd, who is the father of four school-aged children. “Prevention is the smartest thing, or early detection.”

Byrd recommends parents keep a close eye on their children’s hair and follow guidelines of not sharing hats, combs, brushes and other headgear. Newman said lice are often detected in young children because the children play in close proximity.

Within a family, using separate combs can make a difference, Byrd said. He also recommends avoiding dress-up clothes that are shared among many children.

In addition to chemical treatments, vigilance with a very fine-toothed comb on the part of caregivers can help, Byrd said. “A really good mom and dad is the best treatment for super lice.”

Continued stigma is associated with head lice, Byrd said, but stressed that anyone can catch lice and it “does not equate with poor hygiene.” Newman agreed, noting that acquiring head lice “has nothing to do with being dirty or unclean.”

Both doctors also emphasize that parents should not panic if their child has lice because the tiny insects do not transmit disease. Newman recommends a head check if parents learn of an outbreak at school.

Lice treatment resistance is much less troubling than antibiotic-resistant infections or bacteria that can be fatal, said Byrd. “Lice can’t kill you.”

Trafficking may be more prevalent than thought CINDY LANDRUM | STAFF

clandrum@communityjournals.com Nearly 20 percent of kidnapping and prostitution cases in Greenville County from 2010 to 2012 showed signs of involving human trafficking, according to a study by Clemson University researchers.

That indicates human trafficking in South Carolina may be more prevalent that previously thought.

“Our study indicates this is likely a serious problem in the state,” said Mark Small, professor in Clemson’s youth, family and community studies department and associate director of the school’s Institute on Family and Neighborhood Life.

Small said human trafficking has historically been viewed as a problem of smuggling and illegal migration, but more recently has been seen as a problem of commercial sexual exploitation, especially of minors, and of forced labor, especially through the use of coercion or fraud.

The research team led by Small analyzed the police report narratives for 42 prostitution and 22 kidnapping/abduction cases in 2010 through 2012 in Greenville County for markers indicating the presence of human trafficking.

Nine of the prostitution cases and four of the kidnapping cases could be human trafficking cases, the study showed.

Human trafficking was criminalized in the United States in 2000. South Carolina passed a law in 2012 making human trafficking a felony with a first offense carrying a penalty of up to 15 years in prison.

Trafficking with a minor can add an additional 15 years.

Researchers said the presence of indicators doesn’t verify the presence of human trafficking, but should result in further investigation. They said some kidnapping and prostitution cases could warrant additional charges.

Tindal Park safe – for now School district assessing options after ‘nonresponsive’ bid for property CINDY LANDRUM | STAFF

clandrum@communityjournals.com Greenville County Schools received one bid for Tindal Park and an adjacent former district office annex building, but the bid was not considered because it did not meet the terms of the bid notice.

The Randolph Group submitted a bid for $925,000 for the property, but school district spokesman Oby Lyles said the bid contained at least five issues that caused the bid to be ineligible for an award. The property is listed for $2.5 million.

Neighborhood residents who rallied against the sale say they are working to get Tindal Street designated as a city historic preservation overlay district. Overlay districts have special development guidelines designed to preserve the character of historic neighborhoods.

“We did what we set out to do – protect the vibrant history of a piece of property

and a loved park. We see this as an opportunity to work at getting some protection for ourselves,” said Gina Smith, who has been a vocal opponent of the sale of the park.

Greenville County Schools owns the Tindal Park land, the site of the former Donaldson Elementary School, where Albert Einstein once visited to speak to fifth-graders. Next to the park is a building most recently used by the school district as a district office annex that has been vacant since 2010.

The school board declared the property surplus in January.

Lyles said the district is evaluating options “in the best interest of taxpayers.”

Superintendent Burke Royster could make no recommendation, which would leave the property on the market to be sold “in a manner to be determined by the administration that is most advantageous to the district and in accord with the procurement award,” Lyles said.

Or Royster could choose to ask the board to remove the property from the district’s surplus list, effectively removing it from the market, Lyles said.

property surplus and putting it up for sale and approves an actual sale. All that happens in between is handled by the administration,” board chair Lisa Wells said. “It’s in the hands of the administration how to move forward with this property.”

Lyles said the city, which maintains and has made improvements to Tindal Park, has not approached the district about donating the property to the city.

“It has been a long-standing practice of the district, as good financial stewards of taxpayer resources, to dispose of surplus

property in a manner with the greatest possible return,” he said.

Among the reasons The Randolph Group bid was deemed non-responsive were the addition of two clauses that would have materially changed the terms of the real estate contract, and the firm’s failure to provide an earnest money deposit. In addition, the district could not determine whether The Randolph Group, Indigo Investments LLC or a related LLC was the bidder of record and had no way to determine the “responsibility” of the bidder, Lyles said.

Journals’ Cindy Landrum publishes stories of Greenville’s legendary locals APRIL A. MORRIS | STAFF

amorris@communityjournals.com Over the past 25 years living in Greenville and relaying its stories, Community Journals writer Cindy Landrum had been also conducting book research – she just didn’t know it. Writing a history book was not on her mind, but after Landrum was asked to compile a book of influential people, she began work on “Legendary Locals of Greenville” featuring photographs and text documenting folks who made their mark on the city.

The new title from Arcadia Publishing was released this month.

From founding fathers and public servants to artists and athletes, Landrum brings together a cross-section of figures who shaped Greenville. The diversity is intentional, Landrum said. “I aimed for a good mix of older and current, and also a good demographic mix.”

Alongside well-known locals like Rev. Jesse Jackson and Joanne Woodward, Landrum includes former contractorturned-public watchdog Edward D. “Ned” Sloan and Head Start trailblazer Alberta Tucker Grimes.

Though she spent years writing about and interviewing many of the book’s subjects as a journalist for The Greenville News and Community Journals, Landrum said she still learned a great deal putting the book together.

“It was fun to research. They are people who you see their names on buildings, streets and landmarks and they really

have interesting stories,” she said.

Landrum recalled the amazing story of how Greenville Symphony Orchestra’s maestro Edvard Tchivzhel came to the Upstate by secretly arranging to defect from the Soviet Union. “It’s like a spy novel, but it’s real life.”

Multiple people in “Legendary Locals” also had an impact beyond the Upstate, she said, citing Johnny Mac Walters, the IRS commissioner who refused to go after those listed on President Nixon’s “enemy list,” and Renato Moncini, who created illustrations for NASA’s space programs.

Historical sources and families contributed photographs of the locals while Landrum, also an award-winning photographer, supplied photos.

“History is so much more than dates and places. It’s more than the names we see on street signs, schools and other buildings. History is the compilation of the stories that have helped to make us what we are today,” Landrum said.

“Greenville has so many good stories.”

A conservation agreement, also called a conservation easement, is an incredible tool for land protection from any perspective. Through a conservation agreement, a landowner can voluntarily give up undesirable development rights on their property. For doing so, they may enjoy significant tax benefits.

Upstate Forever is honored to partner with the owners of these 100 Special Places, these visionaries who looked to the future in order to protect some of the most amazing properties in the region.

There is no one better to give testament to the importance of land conservation, or its benefits.

“I grew up in Owings in Laurens County, swimming in creeks and rivers, playing in fields and forests, looking at constellations at night,” said Dianne Culbertson, landowner, board member of Upstate Forever and Land Trust Committee Chair. “When my husband Charles and I moved back home in 1980, we bought 187 acres in the country east of Gray Court – Timber Creek Farm. It is home – all our memories of raising our

boys are here. We love this place and wanted it to always remain natural, so we protected it with Upstate Forever.”

The National Forensic League Speech and Debate Honor Society (NFL) has awarded Chuck Nicholas the NFL Distinguished Service Plaque – Eighth Honors. Henderson, the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Education, has been a member of Furman University’s Education Department since 1998. Before joining the Furman faculty in 2002, Thomas taught high school English in rural South Carolina.

He earned undergraduate, masters and doctoral degrees in education from the University of South Carolina.

Dr. Roger Bradley has joined the Bob Jones University faculty this fall as professor of social science in the College of Arts and Science. Bradley previously served as an Bradley assistant professor of economics in the Department of Business Administration at Flagler College in Saint Augustine, Fla. Bradley previously served on the faculty of BJU, as a teaching assistant at Clemson University, an adjunct professor at the University of South Florida, an instructor at DeVry University in Tampa, Fla., and an associate professor of Economics at Clearwater Christian College (CCC) in Clearwater, Fla. Clemson students publish guide to state’s invasive plants SCOTT MILLER PUBLIC SERVICE ACTIVITIES, CLEMSON UNIVERSITY

CLEMSON — South Carolina residents may finally rid their landscapes of that pesky kudzu or other invasive plants thanks to a new publication from Clemson University and the South Carolina Exotic Pest Plant Council.

As part of a Creative Inquiry project, Clemson University students Margie Lund of Lexington and Diego Soriano of Maquoketo, Iowa, researched the state’s most threatening non-native species and developed the 76-page Exotic Invasive Species in South Carolina guide to offer methods and tips to identify invasive plants.

The guide is a publication of Clemson University Extension, the Clemson forestry and environmental conservation department and the Exotic Pest Plant Council, which developed a prioritized list of invasive species described in the publication. The council is a nonprofit organization focused on managing invasive species through education and outreach.

Itchgrass is one of the invasive plants included in the guide.

“Invasive plants create economic and environmental problems, overtaking agricultural crops, threatening natural ecological communities and degrading wildlife habitats,” said Lauren Pile, the council president and a Clemson doctoral student who oversaw the project.

The last printed guide to South Carolina’s invasive plant species was eight pages and included information about just 10 non-native, invasive plants. The new publication provides information on more than 50 species, as well as a one-page list of “emerging

threats” being monitored.

The publication includes more photos, descriptions, ecological information and management guidelines for each species listed. The book also contains maps that show documented cases by county for each invasive species — a new feature to the publication — and detailed photographs.

Information is provided for invasive trees, shrubs, vines, grasses and herbs.

Copies of the publication can be requested by contacting the S.C. Exotic Pest Plant Council at southcarolinaeppc@ gmail.com. Copies of the publication also have been provided to Extension offices in all 46 counties of the state.

Now pursuing her doctorate in forestry resources, Pile focuses her research primarily on developing integrated methods for the control of Chinese tallow.

Even if you are a 26-year-old guy who just moved to town two weeks ago, bring a potted mum or a box of bakery cookies. If you’re a little more settled, try one of these easy, surefire recipes.

Preheat oven to 375. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and place a cooling rack on top. Mix the sugar and pepper together in a gallon-size zip-top bag and then press the mixture firmly into both sides of each strip of bacon.

Place the bacon on top of the rack and bake for about 15 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool. Then, cut each slice into thirds and pack in an airtight container.

Offer these to your hostess, and you’re sure to move to the head of the class – and, more important, be invited to tailgate again.

The Sunshine Vitamin CLEMSON COOPERATIVE EXTENSION

The summertime’s most prolific nutrient is found above. Vitamin D, also known as “the sunshine vitamin,” is unique in the fact that its predominant source is not food, but sunlight. As opposed to water-soluble vitamins that should be consume daily, vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, which means it is stored in fat and eliminated much more slowly.

ROLES Vitamin D plays an important role in your muscle, nerve, and immune systems. Specifically, it is used to form and maintain strong bones by helping the body absorb calcium. Nerves also use vitamin D to carry messages between the brain and parts of the body for muscle movement, and the immune system relies on it to help fight off invading bacteria and viruses.

SOURCES You can get vitamin D through your skin, from your diet, and from supplements. The term “vitamin D” refers to several different forms of the vitamin. The two forms most important to humans are ergocalciferol (previtamin D2) and cholecalciferol (previtamin D3). Previtamin D2 is derived from plant sources and can only be obtained through diet. Previtamin D3 is the most readily absorbed form of vitamin D and is made when our skin is exposed the ultraviolet-B (UVB) rays from sunlight.

Foods may be fortified with both previtamin D2 or D3, but the best way to build adequate amounts of vitamin D is

by exposing the skin to the sun for 5 to 15 minutes a day.

Our body forms vitamin D naturally after direct exposure to sunlight; therefore, clothing, sunscreen, indoor living, shade, dark-colored skin, and cloudy days may compromise this process. Of all the factors that affect our ability to make vitamin D from sunlight, the most significant are latitude and time of year. During the winter months (November to February) in the northern half of the United States—above a line drawn between Boston and the northern border of California, there may not be enough UVB rays in sunlight for skin to produce vitamin D. People who avoid the sun, cover their skin with sunscreen or clothing, or live in the northern half of the United States during the winter months should include good sources of vitamin D in their diets.

However, very few foods contain vitamin D, and fortified foods provide most of the vitamin D in American diets.

• Fatty fish such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel are among the best sources with about 450 International Units (IU) per three ounces.

• Beef liver, cheese, and egg yolks provide small amounts.

• Mushrooms provide some vitamin D, which may be boosted by exposing these mushrooms to ultraviolet light.

• Most milk in the U.S. is fortified with 120 IU of vitamin D per serving.

However, foods made from milk, like cheese and ice cream, are usually not fortified.

• Many breakfast cereals, some brands of orange juice, yogurt, margarine,

diabetes, influenza, and immune disorders. However, further research needs to be conducted for these claims to be warranted. In short, vitamin D’s major benefit is to maintain healthy bones. It is also important to remember that overdoses on vitamin D and other vitamins are primary caused by excessive intakes of vitamin supplements.

and soy beverages have vitamin D added to them. So be sure to check the product labels. For example, fortified orange juice has around 137 IUs per serving.

Even with the fortification of foods, some people may still have difficulty getting enough vitamin D through the diet and may want to consider taking a supplement. There is some speculation that daily doses of 1,000 to 4,000 units of vitamin D can prevent ailments, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, arthritis,

Certain people may have difficulty getting enough vitamin D, such as older adults whose kidneys are not efficient in converting the vitamin into its active form, and those with certain disorders that cause problems utilizing fat properly, like Crohn’s or celiac disease. Since fat binds to the vitamin and prevents it from getting into the bloodstream, obesity may also prohibit people from getting enough vitamin D. People who fail to get enough vitamin D may develop soft, brittle bones, a condition known as rickets in children and osteoporosis in adults.

Observe what changes are taking place in your yard or your favorite public garden. The moving

sun means changes to patterns of light, shadow and temperature. Each day I stroll my garden with my dog observing and making mental notes of what to do next. Dogs are constantly sticking their snouts into everything, completely in the moment as they explore wherever they are. He snorts and sticks his nose into everything, I snip, smell, taste and always find a smile when I get back to the porch.

Being in the garden is being completely in the moment, a place I can never get enough of. See you in the garden.

R E A L E S TAT E N E W S Home Prices Rise in Nearly All Metro Areas in Second Quarter

A promising climb in home sales throughout the country amidst insuf�icient supply caused home prices to steadily rise in most metro areas during the second quarter, according to the latest quarterly report by the National Association of Realtors®.

The median existing single-family home price increased in 93 percent of measured markets1, with 163 out of 176 metropolitan statistical areas2 (MSAs) showing gains based on closings in the second quarter compared with the second quarter of 2014.

Thirteen areas (7 percent) recorded lower median prices from a year earlier.

The number of rising markets in the second quarter increased compared to the �irst quarter, when price gains were recorded in 85 percent of metro areas. Thirty-four metro areas in the second quarter (19 percent) experienced double-digit increases, a decline from the 51 metro areas in the �irst quarter. Nineteen metro areas (11 percent) experienced double-digit increases in the second quarter of 2014.

Matthew Thrift, 2015 President of The Greater Greenville Association of REALTORS® and Owner and Broker-in-Charge of Humble Abodes Realty in Greenville, SC, says the housing market has shifted into a higher gear in recent months. “Steady rent increases, the slow rise in mortgage rates and stronger local job markets fueled demand throughout most of the country this spring,” he said. “While this led to a boost in sales paces not seen since before the downturn, overall supply failed to keep up and pushed prices higher in a majority of metro areas.”

Adds Thrift, “With home prices and rents continuing to rise and wages showing only modest growth, declining affordability remains

a hurdle for renters considering homeownership — especially in higher-priced markets.”

The national median existing single-family home price in the second quarter was $229,400, up 8.2 percent from the second quarter of 2014 ($212,000). The median price during the �irst quarter of this year increased 7.1 percent from a year earlier.

The �ive most expensive housing markets in the second quarter were the San Jose, Calif., metro area, where the median existing single-family price was $980,000; San Francisco, $841,600; Anaheim-Santa Ana, Calif., $685,700; Honolulu, $698,600; and San Diego, $547,800.

The �ive lowest-cost metro areas in the second quarter were Cumberland, Md., where the median single-family home price was $82,400; Youngstown-Warren-Boardman, Ohio, $85,000; Rockford, Ill., $94,700; Decatur, Ill., $96,000; and Elmira, N.Y., $98,300.

Total existing-home sales3, including single family and condo, increased 6.6 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.30 million in the second quarter from 4.97 million in the �irst quarter, and are 8.5 percent higher than the 4.89 million pace during the second quarter of 2014.

“The ongoing rise in home values in recent years has greatly bene�ited homeowners by increasing their household wealth,” says Thrift. “In the meantime, inequality is growing in America because the downward trend in the homeownership rate means these equity gains are going to fewer households.”

At the end of the second quarter, there were 2.30 million existing homes available for sale4, slightly above the 2.29 million homes for sale at the end of the second quarter in 2014. The average supply during the second quarter was 5.1 months — down from 5.5 months a year ago.

Metro area condominium and cooperative prices — covering

changes in 61 metro areas — showed the national median existingcondo price was $217,400 in the second quarter, up 3.1 percent from the second quarter of 2014 ($210,800). Fifty metro areas (82 percent) showed gains in their median condo price from a year ago; 11 areas had declines.

Rising home prices weighed on affordability in the second quarter compared to the second quarter of last year despite an uptick in the national family median income ($66,637)5. To purchase a single-family home at the national median price, a buyer making a 5 percent downpayment would need an income of $49,195, a 10 percent downpayment would require an income of $46,605, and $41,427 would be needed for a 20 percent downpayment.

Thrift says Realtors® are reporting strong competition and limited days on market for available homes — especially at the entry-level price range. “Buyers should work with their Realtor® to deploy a negotiation strategy that helps their offer stand out,” he said. “If a bidding war occurs, it’s important for the buyer to stay patient and only counteroffer up to what he or she can comfortably afford. It’s better to walk away and wait for the right home instead of being in a situation where one has purchased a home above their means.”

Familiar childhood ritual subject of Wee Play Theatre Everything ends well Snow White in nonDisney version of fairy tale overcomes challenges CINDY LANDRUM | STAFF

clandrum@communityjournals.com It may not be the Disney version everybody knows, but in the adaptation of “Snow White” that the South Carolina Children’s Theatre will stage beginning Sept. 11, everything still ends well.

The same could be said of the story of Angelina Mussro, a recent Anderson University musical theater graduate who plays the lead role.

Right before the start of her senior year in college, Mussro discovered a lump on her neck above her clavicle. Since she was a dancer, she figured she had slept wrong.

But a biopsy five weeks later revealed she had lymphoma. Instead of concentrating on her future career plans as an artist, Mussro was thinking about cancer treatments.

“I look at the world differently,” she said. “You see what’s important. You’re more concerned about who’s around you and taking care of and paying attention to others.”

That’s what makes her a perfect princess, said SCCT Artistic and Education Director Betsy Bisson.

Even so, it’s the first time Mussro, who started at the SCCT as a student taking advanced classes and worked as an assistant teaching classes there this summer, has played a princess.

“I’ve played Juliet, Puck, St. Joan, a hen in ‘Click Clack Moo,’ the ugly stepsister in ‘Into the Woods,’ but I never played a princess before,” she says.

Mussro has been in shows at the Ware-

house Theatre and at Anderson University, but this is the first role she’s held since her cancer diagnosis, which forced her to give up a role in “Mary Poppins” at the college.

“It’s like coming home theatrically,” she said.

“Snow White and the Prince” has the same familiar characters as the Disney version except the dwarfs are actually forest friends who are tall and short, male and female.

“It’s a happy, non-threatening story,” Bisson said.

The show opens Sept. 11 and runs weekends through Sept. 27.

It’s that nightly time of kid-generated excuses designed to delay the inevitable lights-out – from those last-minute snacks to stave off sure starvation before morning to those monsters that hide under the bed of brave soldiers suddenly frightened by every creak they hear.

Surviving bedtime hour can sap the energy and patience out of every mom and dad – the very subject tackled in “Go To Bed, Little Raccoon,” the South Carolina Children’s Theatre’s second Wee Play Theatre production with eight more scheduled showings through Nov. 10.

Wee Play Theatre allows children ages 18 months to 5 years old to be introduced to theatre on their own terms. That means they won’t be expected to stay in their seats and be quiet. In fact, there are no seats, and they’ll be encouraged to participate instead of just watch.

After the success of the inaugural Wee Play Theatre show, “The Teddy Bears’ Picnic,” last year, SCCT’s principal teaching artist Traysie Amick wrote “Little Raccoon.” Bedtime was an obvious choice of topic.

“That’s the No. 1 thing I talk to parents about most except for shyness,” Amick said. “Kids don’t like to go to bed. I didn’t like to go to bed as a child. Even today, I have to convince myself to go to bed.”

While Amick’s play talks about why it’s important to pick up toys, taking a bath and snacking, it also throws in some science words such as nocturnal and diurnal, too.

“There’s a lot of cause and effect. Parents can use parts of the play as moments of reference with their children,” Amick said.

Each audience is limited to 40 children and adults who sit on carpets. The lights stay on.

“We ease them into seeing a performance,” said SCCT Artistic and Education Director Betsy Bisson. Wee Play

Theatre leads children into other SCCT offerings, from Second Stage performances where they sit more and listen more to Main Stage performances at the Peace Center’s Gunter Theatre and perhaps acting classes.

“It’s an easy transition to everything else we do,” Bisson said.

Mixing it up

When Athens quintet Sumilan fuses rock with electronica, the result is the addictive “En Transit” Mixing musical genres can be both liberating and polarizing. If the listener is willing to go where the musicians are heading, then an album like Miles Davis’ funk-rock-jazz fusion monster “On the Corner” or Metallica’s classical-metal hybrid “S&M” can be revelatory. But if the person listening doesn’t see the connection, or if the musical genres simply don’t mix, then the experience Go see them can be miserable.

“I think that with a lot of electronic stuff, the main voices are synthesizer-type sounds,” says guitarist Harris Culley. “And with rock, the driving force is typically the guitar. Both of those instruments take up the same frequency range – right in the middle. With a lot of new modern guitar technology that’s come out, you can make a guitar sound very electronic, and make synth sound like guitar. Sometimes that can be a bad thing if they overlap and take up the same space, but if you use them interchangeably, they can really work well. We try to take those electronic influences and make some of those traditionally artificial sounds sound like real instruments.”

What’s fascinating about “En Transit” is how well constructed the songs are. Some groups that combine elements of electronic dance music and rock tend to stretch songs to their breaking point on record, jamming and experimenting until the tracks lose their shape. “We wanted to keep the album more condensed and give more musical value to it instead of having long, drawn-out jams,” Culley says. “On the albums we’re more conscious about keeping the songs concise, so that they actually feel like songs.”

Sumilan, who will play the Independent Public Ale House on Friday night, take a different approach to their live show, however.

“We can change the songs in a live setting and stretch them out if we want to. We like to work a lot of experimentation and improv into the show because it keeps it interesting for us and hopefully for the audience, too,” Culley says. “We don’t want to play the same song the same way every time. We like trying out new things and taking the shows in different directions.”

The band’s debut album, “Natural Selection,” came out in 2013, and though both albums are strong, it’s interesting to note Sumilan’s development over two years on “En Transit.”

“We really matured as songwriters, and matured in the studio,” Culley says. “Every time you record, you get better at the studio process and figuring out where you want a song to be. You can go in with a concrete structure of a song, but a lot of times the fun is in adding new layers that weren’t around when you originally wrote it. That makes the songs come to life.”

clandrum@communityjournals.com Yes, “Kinky Boots” is a musical about a failing shoe factory’s revival, thanks to the new owner’s discovery of a special niche of providing sexy shoes for drag queens.

But the national touring musical that opens at the Peace Center on Tuesday is so much more than that, said Steven Booth, the Broadway actor who plays Charlie Price, the 20-something square who has reluctantly taken over his family’s shoe company.

“It’s about accepting others for who they are and being who you want to be,” Booth said. “Now is a good time for the show. Our culture is becoming more tolerant of people who are different. It’s a simple message but an important one, a deep one.”

When the Dark Room, a Wilton Avenue venue dedicated to spotlighting the arts from concerts to plays to visual art, closed after only a few months in 2013, the loss hit founder and co-owner Daniel McCord hard.

McCord, whose day job is as a filmmaker and videographer, was discouraged by the difficulties involved in securing the permits and licenses required to run a venue, and doubly let down a few months later when an attempt to keep the Dark Room going on the West End failed, as well.

stead, he took the innovative (and increasingly popular) step of inviting bands to play for small groups of fans at his home on Rowley Street near downtown.

He successfully hosted shows for the Durham, N.C., pop group Bombadil and the Philadelphia indie-rock band Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! before he realized that he might have a new way to promote the arts in Greenville right under his own roof. That realization led to McCord’s new venture, called the Hospitable Cat. “We’ve hosted shows under the names ‘DanManor’ and ‘Dark Room presents’ before at my house, but this, essentially, is a reboot of Dark Room focusing on music and art,” McCord says.

McCord says that two things made him want to give the livemusic-and-arts venue idea another try: “Pure insanity, and a lack of something like it in the local music and art scene. I hear from people all the time how much they loved and miss Dark Room. I felt like I had to give it one more go.”

Lola complained that she and her “angels” – the backup singers in her drag show – keep breaking the heels of the women’s shoes they wear because they aren’t designed to support the weight of men.

Charlie is inspired to create a line of “kinky boots,” stiletto-heeled, thigh-high boots for male crossdressers. He convinces Lola and her backup singers to come to working-class town in northern England.

The journey doesn’t come without its challenges, from the factory workers who are not used to seeing or working with men who dress like women, to the discovery by two men who are complete opposites that they have more in common than they thought.

“It’s definitely a role of a lifetime,” Booth said. “Charlie gets to run the gamut of emotions.

On the musical side, the show will include Mourning Dove, The Long Canes, The Winter Sounds, Excons, Archer Vs. Gunman and Anna Kareiva. On the visual arts side, painters/mixed media creators Wes Brooks, Alexander Harrison and Andy Finkle will be there exhibiting their work, along with stone worker Tim Deaver.

McCord says he intends to seek a warehouse or loft space as a home for the Hospitable Cat in the near future, but also that he learned a valuable lesson from the Dark Room that he’ll carry with him into this new venture.

“I learned not to think for a minute that I’m in control of this thing,” he says.

“I learned to let it have its own legs, and just hang on for the ride.”

“THE SOUTH AFRICAN QUIRT” by Walter Edmonds I discovered this book, about a young boy living with his tyrannical father, around the same time that my dad bought me Bruce Springsteen’s “Nebraska” (on cassette, of course). In retrospect, experiencing both of these two incredibly dark, unforgiving works at essentially the same moment opened a door I never even knew was there; a door to an uncertain world where words like “home” and “trust” sprouted multiple, sometimes ominous meanings. – Vincent Harris, contributor

A greaser, on the other hand, always lives on the outside and needs to watch his back. Ponyboy is a greaser, and he’s always been proud of it, even willing to rumble against a gang of socs for the sake of his fellow greasers – until one terrible night when his friend Johnny kills a soc. When I was teaching in New York back in the ’70s, I read it aloud, chapter by chapter, for about 12 years, to my third- and fourth-graders. I perfected a different voice for each of the animals. The life lessons in the book, combined with the personalities of the animals, set the stage for great discussions with my students. “THE BRAVEST DOG EVER: THE TRUE STORY OF BALTO”

by Natalie Standiford “Balto” is a book for first- to third-graders who are either dog lovers or adventure lovers. Or, it’s for the kids of parents who want to introduce their children to the Iditarod. The book is based on a true story about a hero sled dog that led his team across 53 miles of Alaskan snow to deliver penicillin during a diphtheria outbreak in 1925.

The train carrying the medicine was buried in the snow 700 miles from its destination; Balto and his sled dog team truly saved lives with their journey. This was my favorite book during the early elementary years and I read it many times.

“BUNNICULA” by Deborah and James Howe This was a favorite during my elementary years. The story of a would-be sinister family pet – a cuddly bunny that leaves a mysterious trail of drained, white vegetables in his wake – “Bunnicula” was a read (and re-read) paperback. When confusion shines

Two films that get it all backwards – brilliantly

FRANKENSTEIN DAY commemorates the birthday of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, the author of “Frankenstein.”

Imagine a film employing this same technique.

As an example, consider how a standard scene is structured: We start with an establishing shot of the outside of a home. We then see a car pull into the driveway. A man gets out and walks to the front door, unlocks it and enters. We then cut to a shot from inside the man’s home as he enters, pets his dog, turns on the TV and plops down on the couch.

Now let’s say that we have a scene with all of those same elements, but we jumble them up. The first shot is the man unlocking his front door. The next shows him petting the dog. Then we cut to him pulling into the driveway. Then we see him turning on the TV. We then see him exiting the car and then we cut to him plopping down on the couch.

Sound bizarre? Well, I’m going to tell you about two films told in a structure similar to just that.

“21 GRAMS” Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu | Available on Netflix DVD and for rent on Amazon From the director of “Birdman,” this film starring Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro and Naomi Watts is not about cocaine, as you might infer from the name.

Twenty-one grams refers to a theory that when humans die, we instantly lose that much weight. Some believe that this is our soul leaving the body.

This film is fascinating and confusing. It takes a good 15 minutes to know what’s going on at all, and it’s really not until the end that it all comes together – but when it does, it makes for a very satisfying ending.

1910 – year of the first motion picture adaptation of “Frankenstein” (it was 12 minutes long) .

“UPSTREAM COLOR” Directed by Shane Carruth | Available on Netflix streaming and for rent on Amazon Imagine being kidnapped and drugged and waking up with only vague memories of the experience. This film emulates that confusion with masterful editing. Unlike “21 Grams,” though, the ending of “Upstream Color” does not bring everything into clear focus, at least not immediately. It takes some time to ponder the film to truly understand what happened – but once you do, it’s one of those great “a-ha” moments.

BORIS KARLOFF – actor whose performance is the most famous “Frankenstein” monster.

“FRANKENSTEIN” is actually the scientist who created the monster (first name, Victor). The creation itself had no name other than “Frankenstein’s monster.”

“FRANKENSTEIN” means “Stone of Franks” (“stone” refers to “castle” or “stronghold”).

Ideals, enlightenment, imagination: Look them up at the library Johannes Gutenberg’s name may not be universally known, but his printing press transformed how information and knowledge were disseminated. Arguably, that revolution takes second place to an event that occurred in 1991: the world’s first Internet site.

At that point few, even the most visionary, could have imagined the upcoming, exponential changes on how we seek and secure information. However, anyone over the age of 35 will remember when we looked first to our local libraries and perhaps a set of encyclopedias at home.

When Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David McCullough spoke in Greenville this past spring, he made a comment on the importance of libraries that intrigued me. He noted that America is the first country in the world to support public libraries through taxation. The more I reflected on it, the more it made sense.

Indeed, public and publicly funded libraries reflect our nation’s core political values. President Franklin D. Roosevelt stated that libraries are “the great symbols of the freedom of the mind … essential to the functioning of a democratic society.”

Libraries, both pubic and private, have a rich history. The oldest among them, which resembled archives more than libraries, date to 2500-2250 B.C. Democratic civilizations have long valued the notion of public accessibility to learning, and over the centuries democratic societies increasingly availed their holdings to the public. Hence, the tradition of public libraries began.

In the American colonies, the earliest library was established at Harvard University in 1638. Subsequent libraries at colleges and universities and the development of private libraries, subscription libraries and public libraries supported by donors followed Harvard’s initiative.

The private Library Company of Philadelphia was established in 1731 with support from Benjamin Franklin. A group of Quakers established the Darby Library in Darby, Penn., in 1743, which claims to be the oldest continuously operating free public library in the country. In our state, the subscription-based Charleston Library Society was founded in 1748 by

19 men who wanted access to the latest published materials from Great Britain.

Yet despite libraries’ long, global history, our country was the first to adopt the notion that everyone in a community has an obligation to support a community library available to all at no extra cost.

What is believed to be the world’s first public library supported by taxation was established at a town meeting in 1833 in Petersborough, N.H. The federal government passed the Library Services Act in 1956 and expanded it again in 1964 as part of President Lyndon Baines Johnson’s Great Society agenda. During the era of the civil rights movement, Congress believed it particularly important to support public libraries, particularly in underserved communities.

Greenville’s first library was established by a group of women in 1868. According to historian A.V. Huff, by 1870 the group had over 30 members and 170 volumes, and had arranged for several northern publishing houses to send “their most popular works as soon as published.”

In 1897, the Neblett Library, named for Viola Neblett, who provided a home on East McBee Avenue to house the library, was established. By 1900, it had collected 3,000 volumes, mostly by donation, and charged a small subscription fee. In 1907, a Carnegie-funded library opened on the Furman campus, which was located downtown until the late 1950s. The building and furnishing of the library cost $23,000; Carnegie donated $19,000 while others provided the balance.

The Greenville Library System, the first free public library locally, was established in 1921. By mid-century, when facilities remained segregated throughout the South, the whites-only library was located at 400 N. Main St. (and later moved to an expanded site on what is now Heritage Green), while the AfricanAmerican library was located on McBee Avenue.

The African-American library was woefully underequipped, seriously hampering the efforts of students and others who relied upon its holdings. One of the more significant actions taken by local

activists during the Civil Rights Movement occurred when the “Greenville Eight” staged a study-in at the white library. Their arrests initially shut down the library, but instigated discussions that within weeks resulted in the desegregation of the white library in the fall of 1960. The Civil Rights Movement helped to fully realize the underlying premise of a public library open to all.

I have enchanted memories of the old Greenville Public Library, now the Children’s Museum on Heritage Green. I vividly remember my mother and Betty Farr magically transforming themselves into characters from books and bringing those characters to life at Children’s Hour. I still recall how the huge rotating globe fascinated me; I delighted upon its transfer to our new main library. As a middle schooler, I frequently asked my mother to drop me off at the Augusta Road branch of the library while she ran errands. I learned so much from trolling through those old stacks, picking up anything that piqued my interest, from sign language to Shakespeare.

Today, this country’s public libraries continue to be critically important: They provide context for our civic ideals and offer limitless opportunities for enrichment and enlightenment, as well as an expansion of our imaginations.
