Floating promotes the release of dopamine and endorphins, which allows the body to rest and heal.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Drift’s owner, Kelly Caldwell, is so inspired by the effects of their services on her own health, she’s compelled to share those benefits with others.

We’ve all heard the expression about troubles floating away. Thanks to a little known but highly effective method of self-care, those words may be close to reality at Drift Float & Spa.

Owner Kelly Caldwell discovered floating more than 10 years ago and says it changed her life and has made all the difference as she has dealt with PTSD. “My post-traumatic stress wasn’t related to military service, but any type of trauma can have lasting effects. After I tried floating, I was feeling less stressed, sleeping better, and just experiencing more joy,” she says.

Caldwell wanted to help others enjoy that type of tranquility and improve their physical and mental health. She and her mother, Robin Carroll, started their spa with infrared sauna,

massage, flotation therapy, and an oxygen bar, and added Lucia Light within the first three months. Last year, they began offering Comprehensive Resource Model (CRM) therapy, a neurobiologically based trauma treatment model. This year, they will add 1,600 square feet; the new rooms will accommodate many types of yoga, including aerial yoga and classes conducted in Spanish, along with cold plunge therapy and massage.

“We’re happy to talk with anyone who wants to hear more about our services. It’s a different approach, but the undeniable benefits are relaxation and healing,” Caldwell says.

Strategic and Creative Marketing Solutions ANVIL MARKETING CO.

Anvil Marketing Co. is not your typical marketing firm. As stated by the Head of Marketing Jon Moldovan, “Our agency is far from being purely transactional. We prioritize the relationships with our clients and generate consistent results with an unmatched level of service. We want our clients to see we truly care about their success and have the right talent in-house to support them. We’re deeply committed to offering a boutique marketing experience where our clients view us as an invaluable extension of their team.”

Anvil operates as a low-volume boutique marketing agency that was built to serve upscale clients such as Dillard-Jones, a well-known luxury homebuilder who’s multimillion-dollar residences can be found in some of the most exclusive communities in the Carolinas.

This spring, Anvil doubled its capacity and relocated to a beautifully renovated building in the creative arts district of West Greenville. Since its founding last year, Anvil invested heavily in high-quality photo and video equipment and recruited a team of top-

level talent. Their award-winning team includes a marketing director, photographer, cinematographer, senior web developer, senior graphic designer, and a pair of amazing FAA-licensed drone pilots.

“We’re dedicated to partnering with the right clientele so we can give them the personal attention they need while helping them achieve measurable results,” Moldovan added. “It doesn’t matter who you are; if you’re an agency with 100 clients—you’re struggling, and it isn’t possible to give your clients the level of attention and support they need. We’d rather take on fewer clients and really take care of them with exceptional service than stretch ourselves too thin.”

Healthgrades named Pelham Medical Center among the top 5% in the nation for outstanding patient experience in 2022 and 2023.

WHAT INSPIRES

YOU? “You see many people who have a debilitating problem, and if you’re doing the right surgery for the right patient in the right circumstances, then I think you can make people a lot better.”

PELHAM MEDICAL CENTER

Offering Nationally Recognized Patient Experience, Spine Care

Spine surgeon Dr. Andrew Bachinskas enjoys learning about patients’ challenges and goals before deciding what procedure might improve their lives the most.

Back surgery isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution, so it’s critical that surgeons and patients work together to evaluate their options.

“I spend time with patients before surgery so that I can understand their symptoms and get an idea of their expectations,” Dr. Bachinskas says. “Then to see them improve after surgery is incredibly gratifying.”

Dr. Bachinskas is part of Medical Group of the Carolinas—Orthopaedic & Spine Surgery—Pelham and is now accepting patients.

He enjoys operating at Pelham Medical Center, adding that

the 48-bed hospital offers surgeons access to the equipment and technology—such as surgical imaging systems—that allow them to perform complex spine procedures.

“Pelham Medical Center is convenient for patients and their families. People are well taken care of here,” Dr. Bachinskas says. “It’s a comfortable environment for recovery, and that matters because the after-surgery period is just as important to patients as the surgery itself.”

If you think you might need back surgery, call 864.849.9150.

Movers Who Care TWO MEN AND A TRUCK

For more than two decades, Two Men and a Truck has taken care of Greenville’s moving needs. “We are problem solvers. We take the stress and headache out of moving,” says owner Rebecca Feldman. Her husband and co-owner, Bryan, began working for the company as a student at University of South Carolina. He worked his way into office management, and then the couple bought their first franchise. They now own 14 franchise locations across the Southeast, and have 150 trucks in their fleet.

“Our employees are like family,” Rebecca says. “We focus really hard on helping them grow and find opportunity. From day one we have felt like we were given an opportunity to buy this business, and we always want to be helping the next person.”

The employees bring that same helpful attitude to customers. “One of our managers says to his crew

each day, ‘Let’s make our customers happy today,’” she says.

The company also offers full-service storage with pick up and delivery, a great option for home remodeling, holidays, and more.

“Moving is one of the most stressful events in someone’s life,” Rebecca adds. “We are here to listen, to serve, and to make the move as stress-free as possible.”

Real estate scratches a competitive itch for me. It’s the closest thing to any sport I’ve been involved in.

In September 2022, Alex and Ellis Crigler’s real estate company officially took on a new identity. After two years of ownership, they moved and rebranded from The Chet and Beth Smith Group to The Crigler Group. Alex says, “It has been an unbelievable year with the transition.” From a long lineage of real estate professionals, it’s finally time to start their own legacy.

Every agent shares those values and specializes in representing either buyers or sellers. “On our team, you

MASSAGE ENVY

Massage Envy Greenville Springs Forward

Massage therapy and skincare treatments are often considered luxuries reserved for the wealthy. Since discovering Massage Envy’s membership plan in 2007, the Taylors have changed their perception. For just $80 a month, customers can receive one hour of massage, assisted stretch, or esthetic treatment. This model benefits both customers and therapists, providing convenient, affordable, and professional services to clients and a great work environment for their team.

Caroline finds the most fulfilling aspect of owning Massage Envy is knowing they are helping people. She has met customers who share stories of how much one of their therapists has helped them, such as connecting a woman with an esthetician who helped her daughter with acne before her wedding day. Meanwhile, Don finds fulfillment in guiding employees through career and professional development. This is why they are opening a massage therapy school in the Berea area, providing opportunities to enter a high-demand trade and transition into other health and wellness jobs.

The Taylors are committed to keeping the massage therapy school neutral, partnering with many in the Upstate massage community and encouraging graduates to work where they feel led. They also prioritize community involvement, supporting organizations such as the American Cancer Society, the Alzheimer’s Association, and Junior Achievement, for which the Taylors have a personal passion.

Massage Envy has made wellness services more affordable for more people. The Taylors want to positively impact their customers, employees, and community through their membership plan, consistent scheduling, commitment to professional development, and community involvement.

GENCO POOLS & SPAS

Experts in Pool Construction and Renovations

From the most sophisticated resort-style setup to a simple backyard swimming pool, the team at Genco Pools & Spas can turn any outdoor space into an oasis. As custom builders, they use 3-D modeling to help bring visions to life for both commercial and residential clients. Some of their amazing projects include grottos, tanning ledges, and a vanishing-edge pool overlooking Lake Keowee.

However, they use their skills to make a variety of areas even more inviting. Service Manager Tommy Sherwood notes that material, water, and fire features can transform a standard pool into a masterpiece. “People tend to use the space around a pool more than the pool itself, so it’s a good place to invest,” he says.

Thanks to their material of choice, gunite, Genco can offer nearly unlimited options. In contrast to concrete, gunite is composed of smaller particles, resulting in a smoother finish. Builders can navigate curves using a compressed-air spray gun to apply it, and the finished pool is less prone to cracking. “There are so many selections, it can almost be

overwhelming, but we make the process fun,” Sherwood says.

Another part of pool ownership that could be a chore is maintenance, but built-in automated cleaning systems, efficient filters, and overall quality design now make life much easier. “The heat in this part of the country poses a challenge with manually dispensed chlorine, but new technologies take away that burden,” Sherwood says. “Sanitation can be accomplished with very little monitoring.” He also pointed to the role design plays in ongoing care for a pool. “The entire water flow system needs to be configured just right, depending on the size and shape of the vessel. The planning phase is really crucial,” Sherwood says. “We not only advise on aesthetics, but also ensure the pool itself is durable and placed well given the topography of the land. A great deal of thought goes into it.”

Genco’s technicians also service and repair pools and spas built by other companies, and in their Simpsonville retail store, you’ll find supplies and parts— and hot tubs. Call them today and get started on your backyard summer getaway.

ELITE INTEGRATED THERAPY CENTERS

Elite’s Got You Covered

Elite Integrated Therapy Centers has been serving the Greenville community since 2006. Paul Hecker, co-owner and director of clinical operations, saw promise in a blossoming Upstate and decided to base his company out of Greenville. “I felt like there was a need in the Upstate, and it felt like the right time in my career to do something like that.”

As a primarily outpatient orthopedic rehabilitation center, the company has grown to include 15 locations in South Carolina and 28 locations nationally. Elite employs close to 200 people. In addition to physical therapy, they also offer occupational therapy, speech and language pathology, and personal training. “If you told me in 2006 we’d be where we are today, I would have said no way,” he says. “It was our focus on culture and community, a little bit of luck, and some smart long-term decisions that got us to where we are today.”

He prides himself on a patient-first mentality. “We enable our employees to serve the community. We believe that ultimately, we are responsible for their health and well-being, and we take that responsibility personally,” Hecker says.

All Elite Integrated Therapy Centers are locally owned and operated. This is not something so common in today’s modern healthcare system. “A lot of our competitors can’t say this.  They are new to the area or community, or they are national entity. All of our people have homes here. We live here. We grew up here. We are a vital part of the community.”

Outside of the clinic, Hecker likes to stay active. He and his wife have two daughters, one in high school and one in college, and he enjoys golf and getting outdoors as much as possible. “As physical therapists, we teach that exercise is medicine, but it’s important to practice what we preach. Maybe it is to walk around the block, or maybe it is a run, but as humans, we need to get out and be as active as we can to be healthier. And there’s no better place to stay active than Greenville. I’ve lived all over the state, but Greenville is home. Greenville and the Upstate are growing so rapidly and there is so much to offer. We are proud to be local.”

GREEN LAUNDRY LOUNGE

Eat. Drink. Laundry. Repeat.

Combining several types of businesses into one isn’t a new concept, but for Jay Desai, it’s a unique one driven by his commitment to his community. After moving to the Upstate in 2011, Jay and his wife wanted to find a way to connect and give back to the area, and the idea for the Green Laundry Lounge was born.

It’s a place where anyone can come and order a meal or a drink and do their laundry—all in a clean, safe environment. According to Jay, creating a progressive atmosphere was essential, and it’s become a place for people to meet up. He said it’s become especially popular with families since they have open space, games, and more that are welcoming to everyone. There are murals on the walls done by local artists, indoor couches, and outdoor seating, making it truly a cozy place.

The cafe features many of Jay’s favorite meals from India and several vegetarian options. His favorite menu item is the chickpea masala bowl—it reminds him of home. The farm-to-table cafe uses locally sourced ingredients to help other local businesses and farms, and also offers several varieties of coffee and smoothies. Menu items can be ordered through the website.

In terms of laundry services, Green Laundry Lounge offers state-of-the-art Electrolux washers and dryers. GLL is focused on sustainability and quality. They offer a laundry service for customers and will pick up, wash, dry, and deliver clean clothes and linens that can be done on a subscription basis, all through their mobile app. Eco-friendly dry cleaning is also available. All laundry soap sold inside is economical and made locally with biodegradable and sustainable products.

Being high-tech was also a key component for Jay. The space features comfortable and spacious areas, including an iPad station, where those waiting for food or the wash can play games, read books, check out local news, and more. It also feature an outdoor park with kids’ play area, chess table, checkers, firepit, and more.

Growing up, helping the community was important to his family and he wants to instill that passion into his children. Jay said that being a member of the community isn’t just living somewhere, it’s doing whatever is necessary to make the community better. He does this by creating a welcoming, efficient, ecological business right in Greer.

As an artist and as the producing artistic director, Quinlan believes in honoring the past while looking toward an exciting future. That includes continuing an ambitious lineup of shows, thrilling productions for all ages, and expanded community outreach.

“Live theater teaches us about ourselves,” says Quinlan. “It holds a mirror up to society so that we may see ourselves reflected through different perspectives. Theater connects us more deeply to ourselves and to one another.”

There’s a buzz in the community swarming Pink Bee for being more than a Lilly Pulitzer retail shop. Store owner Leigh Ann Miller wants everyone to know, “We’re not just a shop with four walls; we’re out in the community meeting people with a cute dog.” Her mini goldendoodle, E. UPSTATE FATHERHOOD COALITION

Dads Make a Difference

In the late 1990s, a group of concerned citizens gathered to address poverty in the Greenville area. Working with the Sisters of Charity Foundation, they traced the problem to one of its roots: the absence of a father in children’s lives. Since then, the Upstate Fatherhood Coalition has been helping fathers reconnect.

According to Director of Programs and Interim Executive Director Tommy Rice, expenses associated with the court system and the ability to navigate child support and custody issues are insurmountable obstacles for many fathers. “Most fathers aren’t deadbeats; they’re dead broke,” he says. Local dads who qualify for their Responsible Fathers/Parenting Program can avoid incarceration and get assistance finding stable employment.

With cooperation from the family court system, participating fathers can avoid incarceration for past-due child support payments. The balances must still be paid, but incentives are available to those who complete a curriculum of parenting and relationship skills, men’s

health, and financial management.

Thanks to the Sisters of Charity, the coalition has benefited from more than two decades of consistent backing through the South Carolina Center for Fathers and Families. Local donations are also needed and appreciated for activities designed to solidify relationships between fathers and children.

ROBINSON FUNERAL HOMES & MEMORIAL GARDENS

Glen Vista Mausoleum & Pavilion

Families who entrust Robinson Funeral Homes’ caring team with arrangements don’t forget their kindness. Fourth-generation Funeral Director and President, Chris Robinson, says, “They will remember you for the rest of their lives and be so grateful.”

It’s important to have the best team by the family’s side. Robinson says, “We’re a sincere, professional, and empathetic team that takes our role seriously in helping others at a very difficult time. We focus on listening to the family and learning about their loved one to help guide them into a meaningful and specialized service”—right down to planning military rites for a veteran’s funeral, a remembrance video, or recommending the perfect ceremony and location.

Services can be held outside in the pavilion or overlooking the peaceful serenity pond. Robinson says, “We can have a funeral anywhere the family prefers. Our grounds and buildings are well maintained. We’re one of the few cemeteries that have an outdoor pavilion with a sound system incorporated into it.”

With full-service funeral homes in downtown Easley, Powdersville Road, Central-Clemson Commons, two crematories,

JOYNER, REALTORS

Home Happy Home

Maggie Toler is celebrating 10 years as a real estate agent. In the past 10 years, she has sold hundreds of houses and over $172 million dollars in real estate. Toler says, “I loved it from the first day—it hits on my specific strengths and personality.” As an effective multitasker and a detail-oriented people person, she has earned the Best REALTOR of the Upstate award seven times.

Though Greenville’s housing market is still strong, it has shifted. “Interest rates have increased, and some houses are sitting on the market longer,” she says. “It’s more important than ever to have an agent with proven results and market expertise to put you in the best position possible to buy or sell a home.”

Getting a house under contract is only the beginning. “I have an amazing team of vendors that I utilize in a time crunch; whether that is lining up inspections or preparing your house to be listed,” she says. It can be a challenge to align a long list of inspections and vendors, but Toler has well-established relationships to ensure a smooth and timely transaction.

Toler treats clients like family: “From start to finish, I’m going to take meticulous care of you. I want you to make the best decision for your family.” It’s what keeps her motivated. Toler says, “What an incredible 10 years it has been! I can’t wait to see where the next 10 take me and hope to help you with all your real estate purchases in the future!”

INTERNATIONAL BALLET

Training, Outreach, and Performance

International Ballet’s mission is to inspire joy and success through professional ballet training and performances. On all counts, Executive Director Sarah Shoemaker, Artistic Director Vlada Kysselova, the IB staff, and, of course, their dancers, achieve that. Having just celebrated their 20th anniversary season, IB is a thriving contributor to the Upstate arts community.

The word “international” in the IB name is indicative of dancers hired from around the world to perform in three main stage productions each year, including IB’s annual production of The Nutcracker at the Peace Concert Hall with live accompaniment by the Greenville Symphony Orchestra.

Their outreach programs include free Storytime Ballet performances at local libraries and classes for adults with disabilities in collaboration with Thrive Upstate. This summer, they will launch Project Pirouette, offering instruction through the Phillis Wheatley Center, the Empowerment Zone, and Pleasant Valley Connection.

The IB company is composed of pre-professional dancers; however, classes are available for children as young as 3 and

adults of all ages. “You don’t have to aspire to be a professional to grow tremendously,” Shoemaker says. “The benefits of training are similar to an elite sport in terms of discipline and focus, and you’ll definitely develop an appreciation for what the arts can do for you personally and for the community.”

REGENERATIVE MEDICAL INSTITUTE

Empowering You to be Your Best

Dr. Kenneth Orbeck is proof that sometimes experiencing trauma stimulates greater ambition. After falling two stories and escaping a serious injury on a construction site, Dr. Orbeck decided to take a different career path. Intrigued with physiology in the human body, he chose to pursue medicine.

Dr. Orbeck’s medical career eventually led him to home health care, and he owned and operated a mobile medical service delivering care to patients’ homes. Dr. Orbeck transitioned his career path to integrative and regenerative medicine.

His approach to medicine changed dramatically. Rather than identifying disease and medicating as necessary to control symptoms, Dr. Orbeck now identifies metabolic derangements and supplies the products needed to support the body’s natural healing process. As a bioidentical hormone expert, he commonly helps patients with hot flashes, night sweats, low libido, fatigue, and more. Dr. Orbeck explains, “My reward is

patient outcome. Every patient has his or her own customized treatment plan. We are not just treating underlying symptoms of disease; rather we are addressing the underlying issues that are involved in the disease process. These are scientifically based and tested protocols.”

Eva, Dr. Orbeck’s wife, has been working by his side for over 20 years. She oversees most of the office operations and has an interest in nutrition, which fits with Dr. Orbeck’s overall goal:  “To help people be the best that they can be—that’s my drive, my passion.”

Rush Wilson III was a boy when his father opened Rush Wilson, LTD in downtown Greenville. Rush Jr. chose Greenville because it was one of the fastest-growing cities in the Southeast. The clothing store, which began in Davidson, North Carolina, specialized in natural shoulder clothing. The style began in New England and was attributed to the Ivy League look.

New York investment bankers and businessmen, who set the style of the day, were having their personal tailors take away big, defined shoulders and were opting for more of a natural drape.

“There was nothing like what my father was selling in Greenville in 1959,” says Wilson, whose son, Jay, now runs much of the day-to-day. The quality and tradition continues. Rush Wilson employees are experts in the clothing they sell.

“Every product has a story and a history. We are the storytellers,” Rush III says. Clients come in

GOODWILL

Goodwill to All

In May, Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands SC celebrated 50 years of providing free employment services and training to the people of South Carolina.

“This is a great time to look back at the impact Goodwill has had in the Upstate,” says Monique McDaniels, vice president of community engagement. “We are a beacon of opportunity and hope. That was true in 1973 and it’s true in 2023.”

To honor the golden anniversary, Goodwill hosted a Great Gatsby-themed gala at the Greenville Convention Center.

“We unveiled our new vision at the gala,” says McDaniels. “We also celebrated our employees and their commitment to our community. We applauded all of the participants in our program who have shown tremendous grit and resiliency getting to where they are.”

McDaniels emphasizes that Goodwill’s success is built on hard work and an enduring mission. Informed, thoughtful change leads to sustainability, longevity, and innovations that are responsive to the times yet rooted in tradition.

“We adapt to provide services that the community needs now,” McDaniels says. “Services that aren’t just excellent, they’re relevant.”

For instance, Goodwill Job Connection facilities assist more individuals than ever with resume development, interviewing skills, and employment training. Other programs include food service, certified nursing assistant (CNA), commercial driver’s license (CDL), forklift

and heavy equipment operations and power line technician, and technology workshops. “Goodwill started off teaching skills to people who had barriers to employment,” says McDaniels. “Now, we’re scaling our impact, becoming an organization that helps change the trajectory of whole families and generations.”

Scaling up has also meant continuing to augment brick-and-mortar facilities with greater online accessibility and increased mobility, including a Mobile Unit, a 30-foot RV that serves 16 counties four days a week.

Beyond job training, Goodwill also provides transportation, childcare, GED courses, health assistance (including companion care), financial planning, taxes, and reintegration of incarcerated individuals.

“Goodwill’s ABC philosophy advances folks beyond A job to a Better job and then a Career,” McDaniels says. “That means we stick with people. We help them take that first step toward employment, then we upskill them so they can get a better job. We train them and help them get a technical degree or another certification.”

The goal is a good career and a better life.

“As long as there’s a need, we plan to continue reaching beyond our doors to help more people in different ways,” says McDaniels. “I hope people will continue to celebrate the power of work in South Carolina with us.”

CAROLINA FURNITURE & INTERIORS

New Showroom Opens for Casual and Outdoor Pieces

Chances are, if you’ve lived in the Upstate for at least a few years, there’s something from Carolina Furniture & Interiors in your house. For more than 40 years, they’ve brought fine furnishings and accessories to the Greenville community.

One reason they’ve been able to offer such a wide selection is that they have their own warehouse, an expansion that boosted their business in 2021 when supply chain issues affected many. This spring, they’re building on that success by opening a new 8,500-square-foot showroom. Located on Ketron Court, not far from their flagship store on Mall

Connector Road, Lifestyles of Carolina Furniture & Interiors will feature casual and outdoor furniture.

The company’s founder, Linda Dickens, started by personally selecting beautiful pieces from top manufacturers, and no matter how much the store has grown, the family’s commitment to quality has not wavered. Will Dickens says everyone has always appreciated his mother’s style, but there is an amazing work ethic and dedication to service at the heart of their business. “We’re very fortunate to be in an area that’s still growing and to grow along with the community that’s been so supportive of us,” he says.

What Will You Create Today?

Are you in touch with your artistic inner self? Whether you’re an artist working in a visual medium or you just want to learn how to create your own art, the Greenville Center for the Creative Arts has something for you.

From its outset, the nonprofit center has had a very unique mission in Greenville’s burgeoning arts scene, according to CEO Jess Burgess: “It’s a wonderful story. There was a lack of space for art classes in Greenville, so this dedicated group of artists living in Greenville came together to create a space for artists and to support the arts community. It was a big group of friends who came together and wanted to give back to their community and make sure arts education was going to be something ongoing in Greenville.”

Located in the former Brandon Textile Mill, the center provides both studio and classroom spaces. Recent renovations have added 11 new studio spaces and two classrooms.

“Not only are we educating and helping local artists, we’re also assisting them through entrepreneurial development,” explains Burgess, a former dancer herself. “We’re unique in that we look at the business side of art. We’re creating an ecosystem of sustainability. We want Greenville to be the cultural hub in South Carolina.”

TRULIANT FEDERAL CREDIT UNION

Brighter Banking

There’s a new kid on the banking block in Greenville, only it isn’t a bank, and it’s no kid, either.

Truliant, chartered 71 years ago in North Carolina, is in the midst of a 10-branch expansion in the Upstate. Truliant Business Services Officer Roslyn Gilstrap, a Greenville native with more than 40 years in banking, says she joined Truliant because she shares its values.

“We are here to help our members and communities reach their financial goals responsibly,” Gilstrap explains. “It’s always about doing the right thing for our members.”

As banks receive growing scrutiny, Gilstrap stresses not only Truliant’s stability, but the differences between FCUs and banks, and what those differences mean to Truliant’s consumer and commercial members.

Driven for Solutions. Powered by Passion. THOMAS & HUTTON

When  former U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officers Hue Thomas and Joe Hutton joined forces in 1946 to create the engineering firm that bears their names, they laid the foundation for a company that would go on to touch the lives of millions of people throughout the Southeast and beyond.

The firm was founded in Savanah, Georgia, and has grown as it added one prestigious and transformational project after another to its portfolio: Sea Pines and Harbor Town (Hilton Head Island); Shem Creek Park (Charleston); Kiawah Island development; Grand Bohemian, The Kessler Collection (Greenville); to name a few.

Along the way, the company itself has grown to more than 15 offices in four Southeastern states.

Kevin Shoemake, vice president and regional director for the firm, says the tradition of excellence that traces back to the founders is still alive and thriving at Thomas & Hutton.

I’m very proud to be part of an organization that’s been around for 75 years,” says Shoemake, himself a 26-year veteran with the firm. “There’s something to be said about having been in business for 75 years and all the while growing year to year— not just from a numbers standpoint and number of people, but the services we offer—and doing that while maintaining the culture of Thomas & Hutton has just been a tremendous feat.”

CRUMBL COOKIES

Taste Weekly

When Paul and Robyn Gallucci were looking for a business opportunity, they found a dynamic company that deals in one of the world’s most cherished commodities: cookies. In 2020, they opened Crumbl in Greenville and soon expanded to Simpsonville. As of press time, they were set to open in Spartanburg and Easley.

With a background in real estate, Paul has always looked for sound investments, and Robyn, a practicing veterinarian, says Crumbl is a perfect platform for his entrepreneurial instincts. While other dessert purveyors have come and gone, their shop showcases staying power perhaps rivaled only by some famous elves.

“People remark about the experience—the smell of the cookies baking and the sights, our employees’ smiles as they work with the 60-quart mixers or at the balling table,” Paul says.

“Taste weekly” refers to rotating flavors such as the notable Chocolate Oreo, which Restaurant Clicks called “a trip to cookies

and cream paradise.” Customers can mix and match with the popular four-pack or order larger quantities for corporate events or special occasions. The ultimate goal is to provide the world’s best cookies to share with friends and family, and their unique treats are definitely being shared around the Upstate.

ESTABLISHED: 2020

MATT THE DRIVEWAY GUY

Professional Quality from a Friendly Neighbor

You’re not having triple vision: Matt The Driveway Guy’s business is growing by leaps, bounds, services—and trucks.

Matt Jackson has come a long way since his college days, when he started pressure-washing driveways to make some extra cash. After graduating and trying a few other ventures, Jackson decided in 2020 to launch a full-time professional pressure-washing service.

In the beginning, it was a one-man, one-truck show. From that humble beginning, the business has thrived, and Jackson has added three employees to his team and two trucks to his fleet, to facilitate speedy service on an extensive slate of services for both residential and commercial clients.

“It went from simple stuff—cleaning driveways as the college kid hustling his first business,” Jackson explains. “Now I’ve identified additional needs that clients run into, like concrete sealing. It’s not just cleaning driveways but protecting driveways.”

His expanded menu of services is a result of client input: “You don’t know until you get into the business and people start asking you questions,” he says. “Now, with new trucks and additional employees, it allows me to be that one-stop shop for every external cleaning need, from roof washing to window cleaning to sealing driveways to staining concrete and all that.”

HIGH SPIRITS HOSPITALITY

Remarkable People Creating Top-Shelf Events

Ask any employee of High Spirits Hospitality what they love about their job, and every person might give you a different answer. Some will tell you they love the culture—the work hard, play hard attitude that permeates the whole team, summed up by their unofficial motto, “We Got This.” Others may talk about the satisfaction of pulling off a successful festival weekend at Fall for Greenville, euphoria, or Artisphere. Still others might mention wedding days, and the joy on the faces of the guests as they party long into the night.

“We do everything from kids’ birthday parties to festivals with thousands of people in attendance,” says Katie Babb, marketing manager for High Spirits Hospitality. “Our team works incredibly hard every day to make sure people have remarkable experiences.”

And that’s how High Spirits Hospitality spells out the entire organization’s mission: REMARKABLE (Radically inclusive • Embracing individuality • Making life fun • Active learners • Responsible citizens • Keepin’ it real • Ahead of the curve • Bold • Leading with heart • Exceeding expectations every day).

But High Spirits Hospitality didn’t become the Upstate’s leading event company overnight. Tammy Johnson started out of her Greenville garage in 2011 with Liquid

Catering, a mobile pop-up bartending company. Now, she is president and CEO of High Spirits Hospitality, which formally launched in 2017 and now operates six additional independent companies, including Events at Judson Mill, The 405, Topside Pool Club, Bravo1 Protection, High Spirits Events, and High Spirits Overnight.

Johnson’s latest venture, Events at Judson Mill, plays host to more than 200 events per year in two venues tucked in the former textile mill that opened in 1912 as the largest textile operation in Greenville. The Annex, which accommodates up to 500 people, boasts 16-foot ceilings, tall windows that wash the room in natural lighting, original timber beams, brick masonry, refinished hardwood floors, and other elegant amenities. The Smokestack, for up to 200 people, offers a more intimate and industrial feel with exposed brick and painted ironwork throughout.

“We spent the last 18 months designing and developing the venues,” says Johnson. “It’s been a long and very detailed process, and the finished spaces are even better than we imagined. We look forward to creating many wonderful memories here at Judson Mill.”

Throughout Greenville, you’ll find a High Spirits Hospitality extravaganza somewhere on any given day. One thing’s for certain whatever it is, it’s going to be remarkable.

LEGACY POOLS & SPAS

Bringing Dream Pools to Life

One conversation with Todd Edwards is like a history lesson in outdoor recreation. Sharing facts about the art and science of swimming pools and surrounding designs, the founder of Legacy Pools & Spas is also an astute business owner who forecasts trends and is pacing the growth of his company with that of the Upstate.

Legacy’s marketing focus is luxury, custom-built pools, which Edwards more aptly describes as “backyard fun centers.” They actually handle everything from traditional, rectangular pools to more elaborate havens that include landscaping, decking, and more. “We also do both static and dynamic renovations — static, meaning updates to filtration equipment and facelifts to interior plaster, and dynamic, meaning additions such as grottos, spillover spas, and hardscape makeovers,” he says. Edwards notes that the trend over the next five to seven years should lean toward renovations. “We can make your home a staycation paradise,” he says.

Hailing from Hendersonville, NC, Edwards spent five years in the Marine Corps. After being honorably discharged, he studied advanced mathematics and computer science at the University of North Carolina Asheville and got started in the pool

business to make ends meet. Soon, a part-time position turned into a full-time passion.

Edwards has a tenure of more than 20 years in the pool business, 10 of which were focused on business development, sales, marketing, and project management in this area. Recently, Legacy acquired another local pool company, along with a concrete company, allowing them to offer clients a singularly focused approach and well over 40 years of combined experience.

Edwards ardently believes in undergirding the community that is helping him build Legacy. A member of Rotary International and the Greenville Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors, he supports the Metropolitan Arts Council and numerous other organizations. When asked what he loves about his chosen profession, he is quick to compliment his clientele. “Our work is creative. It’s interactive, and we get to meet a wide variety of people,” he says. “No matter what the budget or the dream is, we approach every project with the same attention to detail and joy. We love Greenville, and we want to be here for all of it.”

Organizing Life Your Way CUSTOM ARCHITECTURAL SOLUTIONS

Custom Architectural Solutions is known for handcrafted woodwork, from paneling to ceilings to specialty pieces such as commercial bars. Owners Peter Pasienza and Eric Anderson often pair with contractors in North and South Carolina, and you can view their beautiful work at their Travelers Rest showroom. While you’re there, you can also explore another kind of custom work in the form of a perfectly designed closet.

Pasienza’s daughter, Amanda Mashburn, manages the closet business and loves helping her clients maximize space. “We’re really three businesses in one—commercial, residential, and the closet business, which goes hand-in-hand with residential,” she says.

Mashburn notes that closet organization is not what they do; however, their services make storage and organization easy. “The level of customizability makes our company stand out. If you have 200 pairs of shoes or any particular need, we can measure the

space and create a solution,” she says.

At Custom Architectural Solutions, manufacturing is under the same roof as design, along with the office and showroom—and just as the three businesses share a roof, so do multiple families. “There’s more than one employee with a family member here,” Mashburn says. “We’re several families and one big one.”

THE PHOENIX CENTER

Inspiring Hope, Promoting Health, and Strengthening Communities

For 50 years, the hard-working and highly trained staff at the Phoenix Center has provided prevention and treatment services to more than 15,000 people annually—a true community impact.

The Phoenix Center focuses on well-being for everyone while providing services across all ages, from newborn to the aging population. Through their prevention programs, they teach individuals of all ages the dangers of substance use and how to prevent the development of a substance use disorder. They accomplish this through many evidence-based and interactive methods, including school activities, community events, trainings, and mobile education.

For those who need help with a substance use disorder, they offer both residential and outpatient options. Their withdrawal management and residential programs help adults who need medical stabilization before moving to an outpatient treatment setting. They also offer a residential program called Serenity

Place for mothers who are trying to overcome addiction. Outpatient treatment for adolescents and adults is provided at different levels based on the individual’s treatment plan, which is customized for each person entering treatment with that individual’s input. Services are provided regardless of an individual’s ability to pay.

Clients come to the experienced staff from all over the state because of their professionalism and commitment to helping make the community a happier and healthier place for everyone.

Last year Lea was able to turn her life around. After completing treatment at Serenity Place, she was able to move into transitional housing. From there, she enrolled in school, gained employment, and more, all thanks to her hard work and the support of The Family Effect.

Success stories like Lea’s are made possible by the volunteers and fundraising efforts of The Family Effect. Volunteers from the community provide resources for those who are recovering from substance use. It’s through their time and donations that families like Lea’s can make a positive change. Donations cover everything from hygiene needs to school applications.

The fundraising endeavors have provided three villas to act as transitional

Fundraising has also provided a new children’s center built at Serenity Place as well as an updated kitchen and dining area. Real Estate From The Ground Up TUEHL SEYBOLD REALTY

The Upstate father-daughter team of Tuehl Seybold Realty, Wendell Hawkins and Savannah Hawkins-Seybold, have developed an exciting new brokerage with a special family touch. Wendell says, “We just want to tone things down a little and help navigate our clients through what can be a very stressful process.” With Savannah’s energy and marketing ability, and Wendell’s 26 years of experience, clients feel more at ease once they find a house or decide to sell.

Wendell was a nuclear operator in the Navy (USS Ray (SSN 653)) and taught at Trident Design School in upstate New York before going to law school and moving to the Upstate in 1997. He has practiced transactional real estate in both commercial and residential settings, has developed several subdivisions, tried various

cases in Upstate counties, and practices appellate advocacy. Savannah has been a Realtor in Las Vegas for three years and still carries her license to serve clients there. “My father called one day and asked if I wanted to do this,” Savannah says, “and that’s when we started working on branding and putting it together.”

Wendell collects and restores cars and enjoys the family farm. Savannah, whose husband is detaching from the Air Force this spring, lives on the farm, raises chickens and ducks, and spoils her hundred-pound Bulldog, Rascal. After a career spent traveling, Ann Nager wanted to do something local and something with her mother, Jennifer. The idea of a furniture and design store was the perfect solution.

DZN brings a design-forward storefront right into the heart of downtown Greenville, where they enjoy being a part of the local community. As an interior designer and owner of DZN Home and Studio, Ann and her team have curated collections of furniture, rugs, lighting, decor, and local artists’ work that reflect what she calls “cozy modern,” a unique DZN Home aesthetic that blends mid-century modern and Scandinavian design styles.

Since opening three years ago, DZN has grown beyond being just a furniture store. The business now offers full interior design services and a trade program. It Takes an Inclusive Village

Greenville seems to be making all the Top 10 lists. From “Most Beautiful Downtown” to “Top Foodie Destinations,” we are incredibly lucky to call this city home. But, as the late Barbara Stone would ask, “How can we become the ‘Top 10 City for Disability Inclusion?’”

In the 1960s, Barbara was blessed and challenged to raise a son born with severe disabilities. Rather than accept life with a lack of services, she took it upon herself to advocate and create change. Barbara helped establish the Greenville County Disabilities & Special Needs Board (now called Thrive Upstate), and her perseverance and advocacy have helped thousands of individuals with lifelong disabilities in the Upstate.

Many key visionaries have worked relentlessly to bring Greenville to where it is today. And while some focused on topics like economic development, greenspaces, housing, or tourism, Barbara made sure individuals with disabilities could access every corner of such amazing growth. Today, the Barbara Stone Foundation carries on

Barbara’s legacy by acting as a champion for individuals with disabilities.

BSF offers direct assistance and services while also partnering with area businesses, organizations, and municipalities, including the City of Greenville. The mission is all-encompassing, but it can be captured in two words: providing choices. Make it your choice to support a foundation that ensures everyone has options to flourish.

“A nail salon has been a part of some of my biggest memories. Since opening, we’ve celebrated birthdays and weddings. The non-toxic atmosphere is a game changer for guests who have had adverse reactions to the fumes or ingredients found in other salons, including Stout’s sister who suffers from chronic migraines.

“At freecoat I get to work with talented, creative people and spend time with friends and studio guests. It inspires me to see the resilience and strength of the people around me. Many parents say their children’s grades go up in other subjects when their math skills improve—and their confidence is definitely boosted.

Mathnasium Builds Skill and Confidence for Life

Like many parents, Dawn Sheriff went through private tutors, online programs, and many a flash card when her daughter struggled with math. A professional educator, Sheriff even tried homeschooling before discovering Mathnasium. It made such a difference, the Sheriffs now run three Upstate Mathnasium centers.

Sheriff says anyone can do math with the right strategies and enough practice. “We teach the simplest common-sense methods,” she says. Mathnasium actually appeals to students of all levels. “We’ve helped National Merit Scholars and finalists stay fresh and raise their test scores,” Sheriff says, adding that they hire “high school rock stars,” along with teachers and other “natural problem solvers” such as retired engineers. There are three students to a teacher, a practice Sheriff says promotes independence. “When a student gets attached to a one-on-one tutor, it’s easy for the tutor to accidentally spoon-feed,” she says.

Today, Sheriff’s oldest daughter is pursuing a college degree in graphic design; her middle child will soon graduate high school, and her middle schooler is in advanced math. “I give Mathnasium lots of credit,” she says. “Here, there are no grades or fear of failure, and we believe that if you can do math, you can do anything.”

Dedicated to Improving the Lives of Runners

Jeff Milliman has been involved with running for more than half a century. Today, he and Karen Becker still run their Greenville Running Company.

“Most runners have no idea how much more they could enjoy running or how much faster they could be with what appear to be little differences,” Milliman says.

The store specializes in fitting proper running shoes designed to maximize performance and prevent injury.

With 45-plus years of experience, the record-holding runner and coach was an NCAA All-American and a member of the USA International Cross Country Team, among other achievements.“The reason I’m in the shoe business is that at first, I was an athlete. I started running when I was very young. I ran in middle school, high school, college—and for decades since,” he says.

Becker, a runner for nearly 35 years, holds a masters in health and exercise science from Furman University. The

former teacher of the year and state and regional running champion also chairs Riverside High School’s science department.

“Running stores didn’t used to exist,” Milliman says, “and finding people with a lot of knowledge about running and running shoes was difficult. It’s been an evolution over nearly a half-century.”

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

“I enjoy working with the people I work with, and I enjoy working with the public. We’ve built a lot of relationships over the years.”

It’s easy to make jokes, but portable toilets are serious business for Brad Steele.

As the owner and president of Littlejohn Portable Toilets for more than three decades, Steele has provided waste-handling solutions to wedding venues, general contractors, universities, municipalities—even industrial plants with temporary plumbing issues.

A former IBM employee, Steele says of the career change: “I went from IBM to UBM.”

All jokes aside, Littlejohn has enjoyed great success in the Upstate, and Steele credits that success to providing consistently excellent service, even when it comes to answering the phones.

“We answer our phones; you don’t have to press 1 or press 2,” Steele explains. “A lot of vendors, you have to press a number, and then you’re on hold for a long time. Sometimes, you just give up.”

Steele says he also works to foster a positive attitude among his team.

Serving the Upstate for Over 30 Years

“As important as answering the phone is, it’s really about what we do after we answer the phone,” he continues. “Our drivers have more than 60 years of experience and our office staff has more than 50 years of experience. We have very talented people with good attitudes, and I think people like doing business with people who have good attitudes.”

GRAHAM KIMAK LANDSCAPE DESIGNS

Designs From Consultation to Completion

A strong economy and mild weather make the Upstate a perfect location for Graham Kimak Landscape Designs. A Clemson graduate with a degree in landscape architecture, Kimak started his firm in 2009 and prospered despite a downturn in the housing market. Since then, the company has grown with Greenville.

Kimak loves bringing clients’ visions to life, literally, in the form of flora, but the company’s comprehensive designs include patios, decks, fireplaces, firepits, luxury cook stations—even swimming pools. Kimak’s wife, Lynda, has always been part of the business, and during the pandemic, her role expanded. “People were spending so much time at home, attention shifted to enhancing that space. Naturally, there was a lot of focus on exteriors,” she says, noting that they manage installation for many clients.

Kimak’s smallest project in terms of area was a single cemetery plot while the largest was a private island off the

coast of Belize. Currently, he and his team are donating time to enhance the landscape design for the expansion of his son’s former school, Lead Academy, where students will soon enjoy greenhouses, vegetable gardens, and an amphitheater. Call them today to get a start on your own great outdoor living space.

“Cleaning

As the old saying goes, “One person’s junk is another person’s treasure.” And now Junk King Greenville turns people’s junk into customer-service treasure.

Justin Harris and his business partner, Shannon Trawick, opened their company last June, one of more than 100 locally owned Junk King franchises across the country and Canada.

75%

Harris says every customer with a large project—from a full garage clean-out to a full attic—has said, “‘I wish I had you here two years earlier, it wouldn’t have gotten to this point.’ And all the people that call when they just have a very small project are left smiling and

happy, saying some version of, ‘Thank goodness, I got my garage back!’”

Harris, a former lawyer and Coast Guard veteran, takes his cues from his Eagle Scout days: “Leave places cleaner than you found them.” And their mantra: “Treat every job and every customer like you’re going over to your buddy’s house to help his mom.”

Along with his fellow California native, he says, “We decided that Greenville is the best place in the world to live, so we really wanted to find a way to serve the community—and we have. Thank you, Greenville!”

Healing Lives Through the Arts and Music

When people experience trauma in their lives, the process of healing and recovery is complicated. Often, the pain from the memories and scars is too difficult to be spoken or even written. Self-expression through the arts and music helps to heal wounds and pave paths for recovery unlike anything else.

Premier Arts Collective, a nonprofit organization based in Greer, offers a wide range of programs to help people heal from trauma and abuse. “There is an abundance of pain in this world,” says Gene Krcelic, president of PAC. “We are using the arts and music as a vehicle for healing.”

PAC partners with organizations that are on the front line of healing and hope. Currently, PAC offers programs locally in association with Julie Valentine Center, Triune Mercy Center, and Upstate Warrior Solution as well as with Set Free Alliance in India. Programs have also been launched in St. Paul, Minnesota, and in conjunction with organizations in El Salvador, The Bahamas, Mexico, and Cambodia.

Ultimately, PAC seeks to follow Jesus’ path of serving those who are suffering. “Our faith has called us to this work,” Krcelic explains. “Jesus Christ is our inspiration and our hope. That’s why we do what we do.”

UPSTATE UROLOGY The Vasectomy King

There’s one procedure in the upstate with a twoyear waitlist. Dr. Scott Donaldson is trying to increase accessibility and reduce the costs. To do so, he was recently crowned the Vasectomy King.

One question he often gets is, “Does it hurt?” His response, “It hurts less than another pregnancy, college tuition, or wedding to pay for. I’d call it a 15-minute investment.” This investment will cost about a third of the price of a standard urologist.

For 25 years, Dr. Donaldson has practiced urology. He even did his residency with actor and comedian Ken Jeong. He is proud to have a photo he took alongside Jeong and former president George W. Bush!

Donaldson’s experiences have included chief of staff, chair of multiple committees, and clinical faculty at Duke and the University of North Carolina. What he loves most are patients’ stories. “I just like making friends along the way,” he says. Friendly conversations have led to many gifts from patients—his favorite is a jump map from a World War II veteran with an attached piece of his silk parachute.

Don’t expect the standard experience. It’s more intimate and unconventional. Dr. Donaldson says, “I meet them at the door with a glass of whiskey. Their wives or significant others are allowed in the room. I’ll even let them cut the tube.”

Hold onto your manhood, gentlemen. Leave the worry behind. It’s time to turn procreation into recreation.

BRIGHTFLOW TECHNOLOGIES

A Brighter Way to Manage IT

Brian Mangum was once told by a mentor that he had a gift for explaining technical issues in clear terms and fixing them. This mentor became BrightFlow’s first client, inspiring Mangum to bring a new approach to the world of IT. BrightFlow caters to small and mediumsized businesses, whether or not they have IT staff in-house. They set up, build, secure, and support networks, develop endpoint workstations and servers, and also build phone systems. The company’s aim is to improve efficiency and security, but their technical skill is underpinned by effective communication and prompt service.

“A lot of companies are doing things the way they did 10 or 15 years ago. Whether they hire us or not, we correct bad information and tell potential clients what needs to be done,” says Mangum.

Mangum also hires with service in mind, recognizing that attitude is even more important than aptitude. “We can teach the technical aspects, but we need people who understand that we can’t take three days to return a call, and that attention to detail, along with good communication, is paramount,” he says.

After establishing a Charlotte office, BrightFlow’s founder Brian Mangum had been scouting for a second location for over a year when he and his wife passed through Greenville on an anniversary trip. BrightFlow has been helping Upstate businesses ever since.

BrightFlow doesn’t require longterm contracts. Everything is monthly, which is a testament to how confident they are in their ability to bring immediate value to their clients.

DIPPLE PLUMBING INC. ELECTRICAL – HEATING & AIR

Better Call Dipple

The toilet is backed up. Air conditioning goes out—in the middle of the night, on the hottest day of the year. Homeowners wonder who can come to the rescue. That’s when they pick up the phone and say, Better Call Dipple.

For 44 years, Dipple Plumbing Inc. has served the Upstate with trustworthy 24/7 service. The company owner, Chuck Dipple, explains, “We have employees that answer the phone after hours and on the weekend. If it’s an emergency, someone will get out there.”

Dipple plays by its own rules. “We’re locally owned and operated,” Chuck says. “We strive every day to do the right thing. If there’s a problem, we fix it.” The company started in his mom’s garage. It was just Chuck, his mom, and one truck. Since then, the company has

assembled a flock of loyal employees and 30 colorfully wrapped trucks.

When Chuck isn’t at the office, he’s remodeling homes. Chuck says, “We do full-service renovations. There’s a lot of people that do things, but it’s not necessarily right.” They don’t do new construction, but can remodel any room, rewire electrical, encapsulate crawl spaces, and much more.

Dipple has many competitive edges, but employees are the most important. They soar behind his leadership. “I have quality employees,” he says. “Other companies call them to ask what they should do.” Another advantage is their 10,000-square-foot shelving warehouse. Chuck says, “If you want a certain faucet, I probably have it.”

D’ALLESANDRO’S PIZZA

Good Pie, Cold Beer, Fun Time

Just like a big ol’ slice of fresh-made pizza, the name of John and Ann Petrich’s restaurant, D’Allesandro’s, is a mouthful. So everyone knows the place simply as D’Al’s.

The couple fell in love with the original D’Al’s in Charleston and became friends with the owners, brothers Nick and Ben D’Allesandro, who opened in 2006, but the Petriches’ place isn’t a franchise.

“We got to know them and hung out with them, loved their pie. And one day we decided Greenville needs one of these,” says John, a University of South Carolina graduate with a—wait for it—pharmacy degree.

In 1979, he moved to Greenville and later opened Parker Road Drug Store, which he owned for 31 years before biting into a fresh new slice of life.

Along with classic pizzas, D’Al’s serves specialties such as the Drunken Hawaiian, with red sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, pineapple, and mushrooms; and Hyped Experience, with oil and garlic, mozzarella, barbecue chicken, jalapenos, red onions, and honey-sriracha drizzle—named after the streetwear/vintage shop across the street. Vegan and gluten-free offerings are available.

CAROLINA VEIN CARE & AESTHETICS

Proven, Effective Results

Not all clinical facilities are created equal. Carolina Vein Care and Aesthetics offers something greater in a brand new building. It’s also an independent practice locally owned by Dr. Mark Jackson and Dr. Julie Park. Dr. Jackson says, “We’re really the only local vein care practice that can say either of those two things.” While the building may be new, the service is old fashioned. Exceptional expertise and compassionate care make all the difference.

The practice has moved to the easier side of Woodruff Road in Five Forks. “We have more space to accommodate more patients with a more convenient location,” Dr. Jackson says. The beautiful building contains top-notch staff who’ve been hand-picked by both doctors. Dr. Park explains, “We really do offer each patient a personalized experience. They get to know us and our staff really well. The patients feel comfortable and are treated as if they were a family member.”

The treatment of painful leg veins usually takes only a minimally invasive ablation procedure or a simple sclerotherapy injection — both done in the office. Dr. Jackson says, “Varicose veins that no longer function get worn out. When someone stands or sits, blood will go backward, causing pain and swelling.” Most private insurance and

Medicare cover procedures and include a work-up for the vein problem unless it’s for cosmetic reasons.

Though the company is in-network with Saint Francis and Spartanburg Regional, patients don’t need a referral to see them. That goes for vein care or cosmetic services. Dr. Park oversees the aesthetics side of the business. Services include facial rejuvenation, neurotoxin, fillers, tumescent liposuction, and Sculpsure. All are carried out with skill and a tender touch.

Patients have no reason to worry. Both Dr. Jackson and Dr. Park are board certified in vascular specialties. Doctors and staff are genuine neighbors who just want to serve others with precision. Dr. Jackson says, “This is our community. Our kids were raised here. We just want to provide a higher level of expertise. That’s the most important thing that sets us apart.” Not to mention they aren’t controlled by a corporation.

“We’re not a part of some hospital system,” Dr. Jackson says. “No one is pressuring us to generate revenue. We do what’s in the patient’s best interest.” There’s no quota to meet or dollar amount tied to their patients. Only a name, face, and personal relationship with staff members.

staff knows exactly where your best fit will be. Whether you’re a new mom looking for nursing bras, a woman who’s undergone a mastectomy, or just someone who’s struggling to find the right size, Breakout Bras can help.

For Thomason, seeing how the results impact her customers makes her day. “For some people, the right fit can be life-changing,” she says.

And now a new look and a better fit are coming to Breakout Bras in August, and not just for the customers. Thomason and her team are moving to a new location on Haywood Road that’s bigger and more client-focused. The intimates retailer is bringing inperson shopping back into view and is excited to continue bringing the best-fitting bras to the Upstate.

“Our online business has been the focus for many years now, and I’m so excited to get back to the local customer being the main focus,” Thomason says.

While they’re open for walk-in fittings, appointments are available Monday through Friday, and anyone needing a special mastectomy fitting will need to make an appointment.

The new location for Breakout Bras will open later this summer, with more space, more options, and new inspiration for everyone.

THE COTTAGE GROUP

Smart. Curated. Exquisitely Crafted.

Luxury is a lifestyle, and for some, it doesn’t have to mean large. Cottage Group, a smart-size home builder, creates luxury homes in some of the Upstate’s most desirable neighborhoods, using a custom but time efficient process.

Homeowners pick from a variety of customizable floor plans and make all their selections, from fixtures to cabinets, up front.

“Designing and building a home can go from a two-to-three year process to a 12-to-18-month process with Cottage Group,” explained Liza Dillard, the firm’s head of business development.

Something that gets Cottage Group’s customers in their forever homes more quickly is the firm’s breadth of in-house talent. The homes’ interiors are created by Tribus Interior Design, a sister company of Cottage Group, which includes cabinetry design and manufacturing. Many of their designs are completed by their in-house architecture and design firms.

“Having everything in house allows us to have everything within arm’s reach to get that stuff done a lot quicker,” Dillard explained.

Cottage Group has existed for years within Dillard-Jones, one of the Upstate’s premier luxury home builders, and last year spun off with its own operations, keeping the same standard of luxury but in smaller—average 3,000-square-foot—footprints.

GREENVILLE GAY MEN’S CHORUS

FOUNDED: 2011

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Sharing this bond of being gay men and having a place to get together and be part of our community.

DID YOU KNOW?

Auditions are required, but, the website says, “We have members who only sang in the shower before joining.”

FUN FACT: “We have a straight man in the chorus.” Any man may audition. “They’re there to support us, we’ll support back.”

Every Tuesday evening, 35 men gather at Greenville Theatre to rehearse in pride and unity.

“It’s having this sense of community, where we all feel very welcome,” says Shelton R. Love, artistic director of the Greenville Gay Men’s Chorus.

At every audition, the chorus asks aspirants why they want to join.

“Almost 100% of the people there say they want that sense of community,” Love says. “I bet if you asked any member of the chorus, that’s their favorite thing about it. You would hear that word over and over.”

The chorus presents two major concerts annually, a holiday show and one during Pride, as well as smaller shows throughout the year. The big shows are donation-only, the others are ticketed.

“We love to do fun stuff, funny, campy things,” while also

Building Community Through Song

performing classical and foreign-language pieces, he says. Offstage, GGMC works with several charities, including those that support young people. And the chorus is seeking more sponsors.

As Love says, “We want to be doing a lot of activism and using music to further not only our mission, but the mission of a broader sense of community, where everyone feels like they have a place, they feel welcome.”

SOUTHERN WAY CATERING GREENVILLE

Provide the Client with the Most Delectable Food, the Most Attentive Service, the Most Memorable Presentations, and the Most Pleasurable Event Experience

“We make your event come alive,” says Mark McCalmont, managing partner at Southern Way Catering Greenville. “We listen to your vision, and we bring it to life with the most delectable food, the most attentive service, the most memorable presentations, and the most pleasurable event experience possible.”

From intimate dinners to elegant weddings to large corporate galas, Southern Way has served from eight to 8,000 people at a time. Steeped in 41 years of tradition, Southern Way specializes in off-site catering with a fully equipped mobile catering kitchen.

“We’re a local company with regional reach,” McCalmont says. “And we’re nimble. Flexible. That’s critical. We can change on a dime. We can specialize for big clients and small. We execute at a very high level for all of our customers regardless of size.”

Venues and menus may change, but one thing remains the same: every event is important, and Southern Way’s performance reflects that.

“We execute flawlessly—every time, every day,” says McCalmont. “We don’t get second chances. We don’t make excuses. We make events special. For instance, we earned a five-star Google review recently that said, ‘From the food to the bar service, everything was perfect and they were great to work with.’ That level of customer satisfaction—that’s what we strive for. That’s what we do.”

McCalmont and his team thrive on precision timing, ambitious menus, and the exciting variability of weather, crowds, and supply chains.

“We’re constantly faced with new challenges—a new venue, a new space, a new client, a new menu,” he says. “We go into a five-person home on a cliff and turn the backyard into an event space. There’s going to be 200 people there that night, and by tomorrow morning, it’s a five-person home. That’s very exciting and rewarding.”

The key to a successful event is teamwork.

“Catering is a real group effort,” he says. “For any event, we provide a group of talented people dedicated to creating a lasting impression for you and your guests.

Southern Way has catered for the University of South Carolina for years. McCalmont and the Greenville team have recently expanded the athletic side of the business into the Upstate.

“We run premium seating for Clemson football at Littlejohn Coliseum on game days,” he says. “Catering 96 suites on game day is a big job. But it’s also 96 small events with 96 menus and guest lists. The hard part—and this is what we specialize in—the hard part is making sure every individual has a great experience.”

THE WHEEL SESSIONS

You’ll Be Amazed

When jazz musician Kevin Korschgen moved to the Upstate from Chicago seven years ago, he rented a shared arts space called The Wheel in West Greenville. It was the ideal spot for practicing drums and giving private lessons without the fear of being kicked out of his new apartment. In the summer of 2016, Kevin gained permission to host a small performance at The Wheel. Little did he know, that one gig would become the first of over 90 shows, now known as The Wheel Sessions.

Since that first concert, The Wheel Sessions has become an underground sensation—hosting many of the best jazz musicians in the Upstate and beyond. “I have a mission which I embraced a long time ago,” says Korschgen, “to entertain, enrich, and enlarge the Greenville jazz community.” He goes on to explain that the brand has not changed in 94 sessions. The Wheel Sessions are a jazz performance series hosted in front of an intimate listening audience.

In 2019, The Wheel Sessions moved from its original location to a photography studio in the Heddle Industrial Park on Rutherford Road in Greenville. With great sound and exceptional sight lines, the new space combines the acoustics

of a concert hall with the atmosphere of an underground jazz club. “When you come to one, you realize how special it is,” says Korschgen, who by the way, provides complimentary beer and wine at each session. “Most attendees BYOB.”

While the shows remain an intimate affair with space for up to eighty people, the quality of music at The Wheel Sessions continues to soar. Major jazz artists such as Jon Faddis, Ignacio Berroa, James Carter, and John Fedchock have played the series, not to mention many of the Southeast’s foremost musicians. The next session, #95 on July 21st, features a jazz quartet, Art of Thieves. AOT is a collective of Greenville musicians recently put together by Korschgen and features saxophonist Peter Dimery, guitarist Troy House, bassist Sam Kruer, and Korschgen on percussion.

PACE JEWELERS

Trust Pace Jewelers for Custom Jewelry in Greenville

Pace Jewelers has been a mainstay in West Greenville since Edgar W. Pace opened his shop on Pendleton Street in 1948. Times have changed, but some things remain the same.

“Nowadays, we mostly sell diamond jewelry and watches,” says Steve Pace, who joined the business in 1972. “But we’re also still a full-service jewelry store. We offer in-house jewelry and watch repair. Most jewelry stores aren’t doing that anymore.”

Like his father, Steve Pace is a watchmaker at heart.

“Somebody wants a family heirloom back in running condition again,” Pace says. “I take it apart, find the problems, and get it running again. That’s a very meaningful thing to do.”

Repairs take time and patience. “You’ve got to be patient with yourself and patient with your hands,” he says. “The parts of a watch are so small and delicate.”

What happens when a gear or pinion accidentally falls on the floor? “Well,” says Pace, with a laugh, “I get down on my knees and search diligently. Or I get the one with the

youngest eyes to help!”

Pace’s grandson is the fourth generation to work in the shop, and Pace Jewelers is a family-oriented business in another way, too.

“Some families have shopped here for three or four generations and they’re still coming in,” he says. “I’m very grateful for the people that we’ve served through the years.”

GIFT COUNSELING CENTER FOR WELLNESS LLC

Instilling Hope, Building Resilience, Living Well

At Gift Counseling Center for Wellness, local therapists

Elizabeth Willingham and Kelsey Johnson’s mission and passion is to do therapy differently. Both therapists and their integrative team are Guiding Individuals and Families

Through Trauma (GIFT) while empowering clients to live well. “Everyone is worthy of living well,” says Willingham.

Their intention is to connect the mind, body, and spirit. People think of the mind when they hear mental health. “At GIFT, we start with the heart,” Willingham says. “When we stop our overactive minds and move into our hearts, the body calms, the mind clears, and healing happens organically.”

Traumatic experiences affect mindset, manifest into physical illness, and cause a restless spirit. “We focus on you and your experiences rather than simply a diagnosis,” Johnson says. GIFT teaches mindfulness skills and selfcare practices to reestablish safety, self, trust, control, and connection. Individuals shift out of survival mode and learn to thrive. Willingham says, “A two-degree shift creates a

totally different trajectory. Resolving trauma allows us to put energy into creating the life we want.”  GIFT offers yoga, massage, health coaching, Healing Touch, and expressive arts. Johnson shares, “We journey together, helping clients discover how to heal trauma and create wellness.” Healing is a gift, according to Willingham. “The GIFT is the transformation that happens in the healing relationship and ripples outward; that GIFT gives us the power to live well and can change the world.”

ESTABLISHED: 2014

FUN FACT: The collection covers 45 centuries of culture; the oldest object is a pottery jar from Egypt, c. 3200 BC, and the most recent object is a 1916 Russian icon once owned by Czar Nicholas II.

QUOTE: “We have major artists from the baroque period, and many of their works in our collection are the best examples by the artists in this country.” — Erin

Did you know that one of the largest and most influential collections of European old masters in the United States is here in Greenville?

For decades, art lovers in Greenville have been treated to the extensive collection, which is now held by the nonprofit Museum & Gallery, Inc. Even though the museum is now closed, M&G Executive Director Erin R. Jones said there are opportunities for people to view pieces from the collection, even as M&G works to establish its new home in downtown Greenville.

And if you love art, this is not an opportunity you want to miss.

“Normally a collection like this—you’re not going to find in a community the size of Greenville,” Jones explained. “It’s going to be in a major metropolitan area or a European capital.”

As M&G works to secure an appropriate facility for its

collection, it is “still serving the community through a lot of programming, plus making exhibition loans nationally and internationally,” Jones said.

Locally, 14 baroque masterpieces are on loan for the Ponder Anew exhibit in the newly opened Lenz Gallery of First Presbyterian Church. The exhibit is open by appointment and on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

ROSENFELD REALTY GROUP

There’s a Difference

Sometimes one step can turn into a giant leap. Several years ago, Ryan Rosenfeld made the jump from insurance to real estate and has held his license for almost a decade. Two years ago, he started Rosenfeld Realty Group. He says, “I decided there was no time like the present to start something new.” What started small quickly expanded into something big.

The business party of one organically grew to nine agents and one office manager. Rosenfeld points to his incredible team. “There’s a difference when you work with us,” he says. “It’s focused on developing relationships with the people we work with.”

“We find positive-minded people that are good humans,” he adds. “I’m very particular with who I bring on board.” From agents with 25 years of experience to newbies, there’s an agent to fit clients’ needs. Agents specialize in residential but can assist with land, commercial, and new construction, and the company also develops properties.

Rosenfeld says, “We build spec houses and sell them. We’re comfortable with the new construction process.” They’ve developed great relationships with builders, contractors, and other agents, too.

Clients can expect Rosenfeld agents to be honest, show integrity, work hard, and give great customer service, guiding them through the hurdles of buying and selling.

Community Journals delivered 2.4 million publications in 2022.

In 1999, Mark and Donna Johnston hatched an idea around their kitchen table: they wanted to create a community newspaper that was 100 percent local, built on strong relationships with readers and the local community.

After a lot of planning and hard work, the model worked. “We feel so fortunate that the community supported us from day one,” says Mark Johnston, publisher and CEO.

Now approaching a quarter-century of delivering for the people of Greenville, the company has expanded its offerings over the years. The original Greenville Journal weekly newspaper is going strong, along with its growing digital version. Upstate Business Journal offers a monthly deep dive into the business community, while magazines TOWN, atHome, and vive bring features, fashion, arts, culture, health, news, and much more to readers throughout the Upstate.

Mark Johnston says while the company has grown, the team has never lost sight of the original goal: informing, educating, and

entertaining readers, whether they prefer print issues, online stories, or social media updates.

While industry analysts have repeatedly sounded the alarm about the loss of local journalism, Johnston is gratified that his team has continued to create products and share stories that drive the community forward.

“Our mission has always been to be with, for, and about Greenville,” he says. “We take that responsibility seriously, and we will never lose sight of it.”
