DRIFT FLOAT & SPA Expect nothing Kelly Caldwell is providing the Upstate with the therapeutic experience of floating in solitude. At Drift Float & Spa, customers have the opportunity to float freely in a pool with the peace of mind that they are alone in a soundproof room. In these cutting-edge float tanks, customers can tune out the world while drifting just above the water’s surface. Drift’s owner started floating to clear her mind, but she soon realized it had tangible benefits in her daily life. “I didn’t know it was great for PTSD, depression and anxiety,” she says. “I saw a lot of benefits from floating, and it changed my whole life.” Kelly was hooked, and she wanted other people to experience the benefits of floating. She returned to her hometown of Greenville and opened up Drift Float & Spa, which now features four services: float tanks, infrared sauna, Lucia light and an oxygen bar. The three float tanks feature top-tier sanitation, ensuring that 100% of the water gets filtered through four different systems after each use. “At Drift, we have a real focus on innovation and providing tools that aren’t available anywhere else,” Kelly explains. “Greenville is becoming one of the premier cities in the South, but it was missing this cutting-edge spa service. We’ve been able to bring a whole new experience to people of the Upstate.”

PELHAM MEDICAL CENTER ESTABLISHED: 2008 DID YOU KNOW? The ER and in-patient units have a friendly kickball rivalry. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? “I love having the reward of working together as a team–it’s inspiring.”

Working hard to exceed the highest standards of patient care and safety It’s impressive to hear about the numerous accolades Pelham Medical Center has earned over the past year. But it’s even more impressive to hear about the supportive leadership, friendly environment and commitment to continuous improvement from the perspective of a few of the nurses that made the awards possible. “Our teamwork is what sets us apart,” said Rhonda Wright, registered nurse and clinical coordinator. “Quality improvement is part of our jobs, and we encourage everyone to get out there and make positive changes.” Listening to patients is priority one, with hourly rounds and checkins. “We’re inviting patients to be a part of their care plan,” said Myra Whiten, chief nursing officer. “They feel safe, and family feels comfortable leaving their loved ones in our hands.”

Amberly Tate, a registered nurse in the ER, says the family atmosphere among the staff translates to a better experience for patients. “I enjoy the people I work with and I wake up wanting to go to work and impact lives,” she said. Recent awards include the prestigious ANCC Pathway to Excellence, Modern Healthcare Best Place to Work and a S.C. Quality Forum’s Silver Achiever Award. Wright is a Palmetto Gold nurse, an honor recognizing nurses who contribute quality improvements, and she’s one of 32 Palmetto Gold winners currently on staff. Awards aren’t everything, but the staff at Pelham Medical Center lives up to the honors every day, all in the name of patient health and satisfaction.

GIBBS CANCER CENTER & RESEARCH INSTITUTE Working hard to exceed the highest standards of patient care and safety Dr. Tondre Buck says the expansion of Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute at Pelham, which just opened in March, brings together the most important elements in cancer treatment. These include a stateof-the-art facility, a multidisciplinary approach and highly trained, caring staff members who put the patient at the heart of every treatment plan. Combining the warmth of a community hospital and the advanced care you’d expect at a large medical center, the new 191,000-square-foot expansion recently welcomed its first patients. “We’re all very excited,” said Dr. Buck, a hematology oncologist who has been affiliated with Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System since 2016. “With all of the teams in close proximity, we’ll be able to work efficiently and effectively to find the most effective treatment plan.” The seven-story expansion offers a convenient location near one of the fastest-growing areas in the state, easily accessible from the Simpsonville area and I-85.

Dr. Buck was drawn to hematology — the study of blood and blood diseases — in medical school but wasn’t sure he was going that direction until his former little league baseball coach showed up at the hospital with myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells. He still finds the field immensely rewarding, getting to know his patients and their families and working to improve their lives. “We’ll continue to provide state-of-the-art care in our new facility, in the effective, efficient way we all believe in,” he said. “We are open and ready to see people.”

P&H CONSULTING OF RAYMOND JAMES & ASSOCIATES Active risk management from a team of investment professionals ESTABLISHED: 2012 DID YOU KNOW? Anthony is a Clemson alumnus and the proud father of four beautiful daughters.

Anthony Panuccio, managing director of investments for P&H Consulting of Raymond James, has 30 years of experience in providing carefully customized and personalized financial advice to his clients. “This is our life’s work,” he says of himself and Emory Hendrix, his co-portfolio manager of eight years.

Emory and Anthony believe their clients deserve a more personalized approach, and pledge to personally review and evaluate every position for every account every day. “You want to be able to look yourself in the mirror every day and be proud of what you do,” Anthony says. “Our clients become our extended family, and we care about them.” Raymond James & Associates, Inc., Member New York Stock Exchange/SIPC

Anthony and Emory are committed to maintaining their boutique practice. As such, they work with fewer than 100 client families and therefore are able to offer a high-touch service model and an uncommon client experience. To communicate, educate and bring their clients through the rough patches in the market, the team holds frequent social and educational events with clients in addition to their regular contact.

Hiring a mutual fund or other third party to manage client accounts as a group is common practice for financial advisors today, but not for clients of P&H Consulting.

Making it easier to enjoy your toys You can tell a lot about a person just by looking at their boat. “Show me the boat and I’ll tell you the personality of its owner,” laughs Blake Jones, who grew up on Lake Hartwell and spent a dozen years working at a local marina. “Pontoon? Laid-back owner. Wake boat? More extreme. Bass boat? Oh, that’s a hardcore fisherman.” A center console owner himself — easygoing, loves fishing — Blake is general manager of Take Cover Storage. GRACE HERLONG LOVELESS 2019 President’s Circle Member Grace Loveless has real estate in her DNA. As the daughter of Joan Herlong, Grace grew up learning the real estate business from the comfort of her car seat in her mom’s van. Still, Grace had to earn her entry into the market. “My mom always said I shouldn’t go into real estate before I’d bought my own house,” she says. “You’ve got to personally understand and empathize with the buying and selling process.” After graduating from Furman, Grace and her husband Ryan moved to Charlottesville, VA, then to Atlanta, where she worked for BMW of North America. At BMW, she managed the luxury client experience in concert with 100+ dealerships. Greenville is home to their family, so after their first child was born in 2017, Grace and Ryan traded in hectic big city life to be close to their families, and to have more time to enjoy their own growing family. They just welcomed their second baby. When Grace went into real estate sales in 2019, she paired her corporate experience with all that she had learned by osmosis growing up: she finished in the top 3 percent of MLS (by sales volume). She was also company 2019 Rookie of the Year.

GENCO POOLS AND SPAS From backyard getaways to commercial paradises For more than 30 years, Genco Pools and Spas has been the premiere installer for luxury pools, spas and water features in the Upstate. Whether it’s in a new hotel complex or a backyard in need of some recreation, Genco’s innovative pools can enhance any space. Todd Edwards, director of sales and business development and marketing, says, “Genco is the pool company of the Upstate. We often get asked to build what no one else can, so many of our pools are unparalleled in South Carolina.” The experts at Genco are second to none, and their willingness to think outside the box has led to some of the most unique creations in the area. Pieter Vorster, design team leader, takes customers’ dreams and makes them into an executable design. “Over the years I’ve been here, I’ve found Genco to be a family,” Vorster says. “You don’t just buy a pool from us, but you get a friendship as well — a friendship that lasts longer than any pool you can buy.”

Rusty Sabo, operations manager at Genco, takes Pieter’s ideas and makes them a reality. “What sets us apart is our ability to construct high-end projects,” Sabo comments. “We build everything from backyard pools to waterparks.” Many of those creations can be found throughout the Upstate and into Western North Carolina. Some of the most iconic pools and outdoor areas in Greenville were dreamed up and constructed by Genco. Once it’s time for shovels to hit the dirt, construction manager Josh Laughlin takes the lead. He’s been with Genco basically since the very beginning. “I’ve been here a long time,” says Laughlin. “And it’s been amazing to see how we’ve changed the way pools are designed and constructed.” On the cutting edge of design and technology, Genco has incorporated automation, lighting and water features that are second to none.

MASSAGE ENVY Your body deserves — and needs — constant fine-tuning and maintenance

The Taylors are ME’s National Franchisees of the Year, a real honor in a company that has 1,157 outposts across the nation. Only the top-performing franchisees are eligible for the award, and letters from employees took the Taylors straight to the top of the list. They are employers who care – about their staff as well as their customers. “I guess the things we do that are typical in the South – treating people like family, taking meals when people are having a tough time – are considered extraordinary by some people,” says Caroline with a laugh. But that’s just another day at the office for the Taylors, who have three Massage Envy locations in the Upstate: Verdae Village, (opened in 2007); Pelham Hills (2008); and Downtown Greenville (opened in 2016), one of the top three performing franchises in the state. Despite the tough start of the year, the Taylors are looking forward to getting back to normal. They help the Upstate community with an ever-expanding variety of offerings: massages, facials, skincare, assisted stretch, Rapid Tension Relief,

chemical peels, microderm infusion, and a new six-week series of facials that target acne. “You can partner with a licensed aesthetician to achieve clear, healthier-looking skin,” Caroline says. All three locations now offer high-quality, hard-to-find skincare lines, including Jan Marini and Obagi. Massage Envy is a national franchise, so the three Upstate locations are locally owned and operated by a couple with deep Greenville roots. The Taylors remodeled their Verdae and Pelham Road locations with updated interiors that bring clients a sense of calm and relaxation. Don and Caroline also stay busy with the Upstate community, where they serve on the advisory board with Greenville Technical College. The couple participates yearly with Alzheimer’s Ride to Remember. In recent years, Don has ridden while Caroline volunteered; this year they are both training to ride in the three-day, 252-mile cycling event from Simpsonville to Mount Pleasant. They are longtime supporters of the cause in honor of Don’s mother, who battled Alzheimer’s disease. “We like to stay active, volunteering in the community, and this cause is so important to us,” Don says.

SCHOEN CAPITAL GROUP OF RAYMOND JAMES Helping to build and strengthen your financial foundation

Craigen Schoen has never been afraid to put in the work and wait for what’s right. A native of Florida, Schoen first made his way to Greenville as a student at Furman University, where he completed his business degree just in time for one of the worst economic downturns our country had seen since the Great Depression. Thanks to a pass/fail course he had taken in computer science he found work with a data processing company. “I didn’t like it, but it got me my first job,” he says. As he learned more about the financial planning industry Schoen determined that a fee-based structure was the right fit for him. “The question for me was, could I do what was best for the client, have passion for my work, and make a living at the same time,” he says. Schoen says he was blessed to start his career with Ron Blue and Company in Atlanta. “Their goal was to help wealthy clients give away more money for the kingdom through Christian causes,” he says. Schoen married a fellow Furman alum and the couple eventually wanted to make their way back to

Greenville. He spent the next 18 months working minimum wage jobs and moving furniture while he looked for the right opportunity to gain a foothold in the financial services market here. He found that opportunity at Smith Barney, where he started out leading seminars and making 6,000 cold calls a month to build his business, and worked his way to Vice President of Investments. “Making cold calls was hard, but it wasn’t as hard as the jobs I’d worked to get me there,” he says. After 17 years with Smith Barney, Schoen joined Morgan Keegan eventually acquired by Raymond James - where he now serves as Managing Director of Investments and oversees more than $250 million in client assets. He has been consistently recognized as one of the state’s best wealth advisors. Schoen and his wife, Cindy, are the proud parents of three grown sons, through whom he was able to indulge his lifelong love of baseball by coaching their youth teams for 15 years. You can still find him cheering on Upstate teams with his boys. Schoen is also active as the chair of Greenville Young Life Committee, and small group leader with Fellowship Greenville Church.

GATEWAY SUPPLY CO. Help you take the guess work out of the selection process

When you see the big orange gates off I-85, think of Gateway Supply Co. — and make sure to think of them for all of your plumbing, HVAC, kitchen and bath needs. You’ll usually find the Gateway team helpfully serving customers in their stunning showroom, though you may find them out in the community — for example, celebrating their customers at Fluor Field, cheering on the Drive. They probably won’t bring a bathtub, as seen here, but this tight-knit, hardworking group will definitely be having fun. Founded in April 1964 in Columbia, South Carolina, Gateway Supply Co. began as a plumbing supply warehouse. It has now grown to 14 locations all over South Carolina and it is still owned and operated by the Williams family. “We now have plumbing and HVAC supply counters and incredible bath and kitchen showrooms,” says Aimee Williams, marketing and showroom director. The Gateway showroom is a must for anyone building or remodeling a kitchen or bath. The helpful staff can assist with your plumbing needs along with an incredible array of faucets, fixtures, hardware and accessories

that can make your vision come to life. Customers have three extensive showrooms in the Upstate to choose from in Greenville, Spartanburg and Pendleton. The knowledgeable staff members at each location set Gateway apart from the rest. Gateway Supply Co. has been serving Greenville since 1989, and is managed and operated by Bill Fitts and Lonnie McCall. “We would not be where we are today if it wasn’t for our team,” Williams says. “We have an incredible staff that is always ready to help.” After more than 30 years in Greenville, Gateway has deep roots in the community, and loves to support local organizations and show appreciation for its Upstate customers. They are excited to team up with the Greenville Drive for an upcoming customer appreciation event. “Our customers mean everything to us, so we’re excited to have some fun in downtown Greenville with the people who make our business possible,” Williams says. Pictured are Gateway team members Tabitha Nelson-Cuyar, Aerika Paxton, Aimee Williams (in the tub) and Chasidee Knapke.

That appreciation informs his design work as owner of Mobius Construction. “We try to make our houses look like they’ve always been there,” he says. Matt got his start in homebuilding more than 20 years ago, gaining valuable hands-on experience working as a brick mason while earning his degree in civil engineering from Virginia Tech. DID YOU KNOW? Jacob Mann was named the #1 agent by volume for 2019 by the Greater Greenville Association of REALTORS®. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? “To show my family — especially my three fine young men — what being a dad, husband and loving your career is all about.”

JACOB MANN Your Greenville Realtor® As the consistently awarded number one agent in sales volume and units for Coldwell Banker Caine, Jacob Mann continues to not only be a top producer, but a leader in the community. Jacob is always on the move and known for his friendly disposition and work ethic — but when his feet hit the floor every morning, he’s just another man working hard to get the job done. Jacob’s passion for real estate and zest for life is evident to all who interact with him. As the number one producer per volume in the Greenville MLS in 2019, Jacob approaches his career with great care. When asked about his motivation for success, he says, “I wake up excited every day. It’s a blessing to be able to go out and thrive in my career — I absolutely LOVE what I do, and I do it to support my family. I want them to be proud of my work ethic and successful career.”

Jacob has called residential real estate his career for approximately 20 years and attributes this success to his willingness to take on any deal — from a first-time buyer, investor looking to flip, or a multimillion-dollar property buyer looking for their dream home. No deal is too small or too large. Jacob also values his ability to devote himself to his clients while still being present in the lives of his wife, Elizabeth, and their sons Chapman, McCrady and Bates. “Sometimes it almost feels like a circus act and I may come in on two wheels, but I am always there cheering for my boys in their sports activities. JEFF LYNCH

APPLIANCES • ELECTRONICS • BEDDING • FURNITURE

Local family owned and operated since 1951 Home in time for dinner; with family on Sunday. These are the principles on which Jeff Lynch founded his appliance business in 1951, and they are at the core of how his son Mark still runs it today. Jeff Lynch occupied several prominent locations in Greenville before landing in Lake Forest Shopping Center, where they operated for the better part of four decades. It was in this location that Mark first came to work for the family business, eventually earning the job of watching the store on Wednesdays while his father played his weekly round of golf at Bonnie Brae. Mark learned the business from the ground up, riding along with the senior delivery installer while in high school, and working as much as he could during breaks from the University of South Carolina. While in college he started learning the sales and accounting end of things so he left college in 1981 and joined Jeff Lynch full time. “My father was a great mentor and he showed me everything he did and I was always interested

in it,” Mark says. “We had some tough times because we were both passionate, but we would always work it out.” Mark remembers the turning point in their relationship, when they weren’t seeing eye to eye and his father hauled him out to the parking lot and pointed up at the sign, reminding his son of who was in charge. “He said, ‘I want all your ideas but I have final veto. Once I’ve heard it, if I don’t agree with it, it’s time to get back to work,’” Mark remembers. “He was always fair and would always hear me out.” The business continued to grow and relocate as needed, finally taking over the former Lowe’s location at the corner of Woodruff and Roper Mountain Road — a move not without controversy, being that Jeff Lynch gives the big box stores a serious run for their money here in Greenville. “We’re fierce competitors of theirs, and that’s because we have the best staff in Greenville,” Mark says. “They’re good, and they know what they’re doing.”

CHRIST CHURCH EPISCOPAL SCHOOL Personalized learning, care, attention, education CCES is an independent school with approximately 1130 total students in the Episcopal tradition serving primer through 12th grade on a beautiful 72-acre campus in Greenville. The school’s lower, middle and upper divisions are all housed on these pristine grounds that are reminiscent of a small college campus. Academic expectations at CCES are known to be very high, but not at the expense of turning out well-adjusted and well-rounded graduates. “Relationships are key,” says Jamie Bryant, director of Strategic Marketing and communication. “Each student is known by leadership and known by their teachers. We know how they learn, their personalities, what motivates them. We’re able to meet each student where they are.” Using a carefully coordinated curriculum, CCES students are taught resilience, intellectual curiosity and growth mindset, and are empowered for rational decision making. Self discovery is taught through service learning projects, starting as early as primer and first grade with oncampus projects, such as decorating pillowcases for homeless shelters and placemats for soup kitchens. Beginning in second grade students are out in the community, volunteering in soup kitchens and playing cards with residents at retirement centers.

CCES also boasts strong athletic and arts programming to complement the curriculum. “We have so many opportunities to get involved, and because of our small size if a student wants to join a team or be part of a performance, there is a place for them,” Bryant says. “Our students are well-rounded because they have the opportunity to pursue all sorts of interests.” CCES is currently in year three of a five-year strategic plan – Cultivating Deep Roots & Abundant Growth – which Angela Allen, assistant head for academics, was hired to see through. The plan lays out eight goals that hone in on things like exceptional writing skills and college preparedness, as well as cultivating a respectful, spiritual, welcoming community and promoting well-being and balance in all students. Pictured above is the CCES leadership team – names (left to right): Dr. Angela Allen, Assistant Head for Academics; Wes Clarke, Upper School Director; Amanda Beckrich, Upper School Assistant Director; Kate Fagan, Middle School Director; Hamilton Parks, Middle School Assistant Director; David Johnstone, Lower School Director; Valerie Riddle, Lower School Chaplain/Assistant Director – whom Bryant calls “champions of creativity.” “They infuse joy in the daily life of each student and faculty member, and that cultivates an environment people want to be part of.”

“A servant attitude is instilled in our students from day one of them being here,” Bryant says.

COMFORT KEEPERS In-home care that elevates the human spirit For 14 years running, Erin and Chris Couchell have been providing personalized care for seniors in the comfort of their own homes. The Couchells are the local owners of Comfort Keepers, an inhome senior care company that has expanded from Spartanburg to Greenville and even into North Carolina. With over 500 caregivers, they are able to provide personalized care throughout the Upstate. The idea for the business emerged as Erin was taking care of her mother, who was battling a terminal illness, while also working full time and caring for her own family. Erin realized a need for seniors to get professional care in the comfort of their own homes. “People were caring for their loved ones in their home but were not able to get this kind of professional care,” Erin says of those earliest days. “We are now able to come in and personalize care for each of our clients, and that makes a real difference.” Whether it’s a client who only needs a few hours a week or a person nearing the end of life, Comfort Keepers has caregivers who provide the highest quality of care in the Upstate.

MELISSA MORRELL Leveraging creativity and old-fashioned hard work for buyers and sellers You don’t hit No. 1 nine years in a row without being BOLD. Melissa Morrell is hard-working, has endless energy and boundless positivity for her chosen career — everything you want in a real estate agent. But to maintain her proven track record she makes sure to stay ahead of the curve, using all of the latest technological tools from videos, social media and virtual tours while also relying on an old-fashioned arsenal of methods that still work like price, presentation and photography! “I find that having genuine and meaningful information and ideas for my clients is of utmost priority,” says Morrell. “Likewise knowing how to communicate with different audiences is equally important.” This wife and mom of three is smack-dab between young buyers purchasing their first home and retirees selling their final home. “I love being able to relate and assist buyers and sellers at every stage of their lives,” says Morrell. “With 17 years of experience, I have a wealth of experiences to draw from and a network to capitalize on.” Each year, Morrell looks for a word that she focuses on for inspiration. This year, she chose the word: BOLD. “It can be easy to become complacent in this business, but I want to step up and outside of the box for my clients by being creative each and every year, especially as we enter a new decade and with it oftentimes unchartered waters,” says Morrell.

As a S.T.E.A.M accredited school, skills such as creativity, problem-solving, empathy, teamwork and critical thinking are infused into every aspect of the classrooms at Five Oaks Academy. Known internationally for her design collaboration with Nike, Anthropologie and a French linen company, Eva gets her inspiration from the natural world. With her guidance, students gathered images of interesting colors, textures and patterns to create personalized inspiration boards. She then demonstrated different techniques with liquid watercolors, allowing students to experiment with color and collage papers together in new and unexpected ways.

Bring birds back

Abbie Pressley and Melanie Moore, co-owners of Wild Birds Unlimited in Greenville, have always had a soft spot in their hearts for birds. For 22 years, Abbie and Melanie have provided the Greenville-area with a one-stop shop for everything bird lovers and watchers need to accommodate their feathered friends that grace backyards across the Upstate. The mother-daughter duo is invested in the bird population of the Upstate working tirelessly to ensure that birds have a sustainable environment here. Since 1970, three billion birds have disappeared from our environment. That is one in every four birds that have vanished in the last 50 years. By educating the public and providing innovative products, Wild Birds Unlimited leads the way in preserving

and improving bird habitats in private backyards and public places around Greenville. Wild Birds Unlimited is a partner with the National Wildlife Federation (NWF). Bird-lovers can now get their backyard habitats certified by the NWF, which ensures birds have all of the necessities for a sustainable environment. At Wild Birds, Abbie and Melanie can help customers provide the appropriate food, water, cover and place to raise young that the NWF requires for certification. The Congaree Road store sells everything you might need to support the birds around your home, from feeders and seed to birdbaths and nesting boxes. COUNTYBANK Helping you get ahead since 1933 Banks are typically where you make a deposit or take out a loan, but Countybank is so much more — it is an integral part of the community. Candice Good, Greer market administrator for Countybank, values her opportunity to serve the community where she was raised. “Watching the downtown Greer streetscape transformation is an experience I’ll never forget,” she says. “The city’s ability to invest in both itself and every business in town speaks volumes about their commitment to the community.” Countybank follows the same philosophy. With locations in downtown Greenville, Pelham Road, downtown Greer, Anderson and Greenwood, Countybank has been helping the Upstate community get ahead since 1933. With a full suite of financial services, they are a local, trusted community bank that works with businesses and individuals to provide personal, customized

financial solutions — and they have grown right alongside the communities they serve. “When small businesses experience growing pains, they need a bank that understands their business and their community,” says Matt Cloutier, SBA development officer. Tim Lincolnhol, commercial banking executive, and Scott Presley, director of residential construction lending, agree that they have seen surrounding areas like Simpsonville and the construction lending market take off — areas Countybank can financially support. With commercial and retail banking, insurance, mortgage, trust, and investments, Countybank is well positioned to assist residents and businesses as our area continues to grow — always putting people first.

Bonnie Conforti loved her role as a homeschool mom, but when her family lost everything during the 2008 recession, she needed to find a way to earn income. She started Busy Beez to help people who were busy and didn’t want to spend their evenings or weekends cleaning, and the business grew rapidly. “We were caring enough to be honest and provide the services people ask for,” says Bonnie, who now has 20 employees. Busy Beez doesn’t hire good employees. They hire amazing employees, and they train them to do work that is spectacular. “We have an awesome customer service experience as well, and we’re customizable,” she says.

Bonnie gets the best employees in the field by paying more, investing in them, and taking the time to find out how they are doing and what she can do to help. “People are happy to have a job where the owner cares, and I like to see people slowly and meticulously making a difference for themselves,” she says. For customers, she does not believe in contracts — “I don’t like to be roped into anything” — but offers impeccable cleaning on a weekly, biweekly or monthly basis, or a one-time clean that leaves your home or office spotless. “We work with people to give them the best, most dependable, experienced service,” Bonnie says.

Earning trust, protecting assets, providing sound 1031 Exchange advice Taxes may be one of life’s few certainties but, like death, John Boyd thinks they should be put off as long as possible. “A tax dollar deferred is a tax dollar saved,” says Boyd, Founder/ CEO of Banker Exchange. “It’s a simple idea — and a complex process.” Banker Exchange focuses exclusively on maneuvering the complexities of Section 1031 of the Internal Revenue Code, which allows investors to defer capital gains taxes on real estate transactions through qualifying exchanges. With roots in the barter system, 1031 exchanges are highly regulated, with strict, detailed requirements and somewhat daunting terms.

“But the rewards,” Boyd says, “can be significant.” Banker Exchange advises investors through the process, thereby creating additional equity for future purchases. In effect, Banker Exchange originates a resizable, interest-free loan from the government, that only has to be repaid when the taxpayer decides to repay it. “Our purpose is providing sound 1031 advice and cutting-edge solutions,” says Boyd, whose team hosts educational seminars for investors as well as their advisors. “1031 exchanges are what we do — it’s all we do — and we’re humbled that clients from around the country trust us to do it right. We are committed to helping people keep more of their hard-earned money.”

JILL CHAPMAN “Buying or selling – a piece of cake” When it comes to getting things done for her clients, Jill Chapman is unstoppable. Recently she got a call from a couple – Steve & Kay Koffel – who were interested in looking at condos on Lake Hartwell, in a development where Jill happens to live. Dedicated to her exercise regimen, Jill got caught on the phone and was still in her gym clothes when it was time to meet her new clients. No bother, they said. If they were going to end up as neighbors, gym clothes were an inevitability. So onward Jill pressed. When they arrived at the unit in question, they were greeted by a swarm of wasps who had made their home in a wreath hanging on the front door. Jill grabbed the wreath, threw it over the railing and managed to make it inside, wasps swarming all the while. Now Jill was trapped inside and the Koffels were stuck outside. The front door was a no go, but Jill was determined they would do what they came to do. So like any quick-thinking superhero, Jill opened the bedroom window and pulled her clients safely inside – saving the day, and making the sale.

Banking executives like Doug Thackston, Betsy Steifle and Justin Hill are citizens as well as bankers, and

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK We move people forward

Two Men and a Truck has been moving folks around the Upstate for decades, but in the 18 years since Rebecca and Bryan Feldman have owned the business, it has extended its services to meet the needs of every homebuyer and seller. “Our core business is moving,” says Rebecca. “But we have expanded to help better serve the Upstate.” Among those additional services are storage options, accommodations for designers, and junk removal. Two Men and a Truck can now store homebuyers’ belongings until they are ready to be moved, and they offer receiving, storage and delivery for interior designers while homes are being planned and designed. The newest addition to the Feldmans’ franchise is junk removal, in which a truck can come to customers’ houses and haul off unwanted junk. “When you move, you realize how

much you’ve accumulated,” says Rebecca of the new service. “And you often try to clear out excess items. That’s what this new service is intended for.” Now, Two Men and a Truck can move what you want and throw away what you don’t. The Feldmans own 13 franchises across the Southeast, but they call Greenville home: “We love Greenville. We love all the growth it is experiencing, and it’s a wonderful town to raise our children, who are now 12 and 14.” Two Men and a Truck is certainly growing in the Greenville area, but top-of-the-line movers are still the core of the company. “What sets us apart is our dedication to customer service and the professionalism of our movers,” says Rebecca. That’s why when the Upstate is planning to move, Two Men and a Truck is planning to help.

SILVERLINE INC. Quality, style and service you expect It started with a hand-drawn farmhouse. Every inch of that home was thought through and designed to be what blended the best of old-world farmhouse and our modern style today. From there … another. And another. The Farmhouse Series was the spark. We opened one of the homes for an event the night before it hit the market and over 400 people came through, drawn to the quality and design, and drawn to the importance placed on community as well. Aspects of personal dreams were seen in the homes, and clients began designing and building with us.

“Strength in numbers.” It’s a catch phrase because there is so much truth to it. We can often do more when we combine our strengths, abilities and resources then we can when we go at it alone. This is the philosophy of Mark and Jeremiah (over 45 years combined in the building/ high-end custom home industry) and it is the heartbeat of Silverline Inc. It’s the reason we have the resources to be able to communicate and skillfully take a project from a dream to completion, without compromising attention to detail, quality or design. It’s why we can run a referralbased business and continue to make wonderful new friendships along the way. Fine custom home building is a process requiring communication, creativity, skill, knowledge and analytical execution. When all the parts are there, the end product is a lifelong dream come true, and that is the heart of our success.

FRANCIS PRODUCE Driven to meet all your produce needs and then some For nearly a century, Francis Produce has provided the highest quality produce to the Upstate. The Francis family began providing local farm-fresh fruits and vegetables to the Greenville area in 1927. The goal was and still is to provide the best product the area had to offer. Ninety-three years later, Francis Produce is still family-owned — run by the third and fourth generations of the Francis family — with no sign of slowing down. The company has blossomed over the decades, providing services that span across the United States while maintaining its local charm and commitment to quality. Today, Francis Produce specializes in food service, grocery stores and logistics. In order to deliver the best

produce to the Upstate, the Francis family picks up directly from farms around the Southeast, as well as nationally. That produce is delivered to local restaurants and grocery stores around Greenville. However, those trips around the Southeast and to the west coast aren’t just one-way. Francis has added a trucking division, which ships dry goods from the Upstate to places all across the country. Through those years of buying from trusted farms across America, the Francis family has made relationships with the highest quality farmers for every kind of produce. Those relationships, along with the relationships they have created with their customers, have made Francis Produce an essential part of the Upstate community.

ROBINSON FUNERAL HOMES Digging roots deeper in the Upstate Established in 1875, Robinson Funeral Home is one of the oldest family-owned businesses in the Upstate. Nearing 150 years of helping people say goodbye to their loved ones, the company maintains its tradition of caring, but continues to grow and change to reflect consumer needs. One important aspect of that is Robinson Memorial Gardens, currently undergoing a large expansion of more than four acres. Robinson Memorial Gardens already offers a variety of options, including glass-front niches, a Veterans Garden of Honor, Chapel of Reflection Mausoleum, and plots overlooking more than 80 acres of rolling green hills. The new addition will offer even more options for Upstate families, including a garden mausoleum and pavilion that is unlike anything else in the area. “This will be a really unique development with the garden

mausoleum and pavilion, various cremation options and more burial plots,” says Chris Robinson, managing owner and a fourth-generation funeral director. “It will be a peaceful place, and a calming and soothing gathering place for families and loved ones.” With full-service funeral homes in downtown Easley, Powdersville Road and Central-Clemson Commons, plus Robinson Memorial Gardens being easily accessible to each, Robinson can assist families throughout the Upstate as they honor and celebrate their loved ones. The Powdersville Road location is the only funeral home in the Upstate that can facilitate all arrangements in one convenient setting including a crematory, cemetery selection area, and an experienced staff, which is licensed, professional, dedicated and responsive.

You’re getting insight into landscape design, interior decorating, renovations, paint colors, Greenville neighborhoods and so much more. And her trustworthy, no-nonsense approach is yet another plus for her clients, who can rest assured she has their best interests at heart. “I don’t think of myself as a salesperson,” Heidi says. “I’m more of a home consultant, and I think about what’s best for the client.” She’s even told several clients not to sell their homes, putting their best interests above her own. Heidi got her start in real estate after having a less-than-ideal experience buying her own home. “I felt like the agent only cared about the paycheck, and I didn’t want anyone to feel that way,” she says. “I decided I could do it better. Now, their firm is a prominent piece of the Upstate’s legal landscape, and the attorneys are proud of turning their dream into a reality. While Amanda and Jessica are always looking for opportunities to learn and grow, they are also finding comfort in being an established part of the family law community in the Upstate. Proven ability, personal commitment

When it comes to accounting, Graydon Thompson does things differently. While many accounting firms have operated the same way for decades, Phyllis Graydon and Greg Thompson are embracing the newest techniques and technology. Nine years ago, the firm went completely paperless. “A lot of accountants still do things with pencil and paper,” says Phyllis. “But we don’t even have file cabinets here.” The desire to provide the very best for its clients led Graydon Thompson to its innovative approach. The firm offers tax planning and preparation, auditing services for commercial enterprises and retirement plans, review and compilation services, as well as bookkeeping and payroll processing services for local businesses. Graydon Thompson has built a reputation as a reliable firm for more than 15 years, and their modernized approach enables them to more readily meet their client’s needs in a timely fashion, without the excessive wear and tear of old technologies. “We strive to maintain an even workload for ourselves and our staff. LARUE FINE CHOCOLATE Her love of wine and food and travel translates into every bite of chocolate For years, Elizabeth Logan McDaniel was a wine distributor in the Upstate. Today, she’s providing another kind of indulgence to the people of Greenville. Owner and founder of LaRue Fine Chocolate, Elizabeth has finally opened her first chocolate shop after several years of selling chocolates at the TD Market and online. Located at Poe West, the new shop will feature seating for 40 people, cakes and pies from various chefs, ice cream, cheese boards, small meals, coffee, beer, wine and cocktails. And, of course, chocolate. Several years ago, Elizabeth began making chocolates with her niece as a fun project. She quickly realized that she had natural skill as a chocolatier and began giving out samples to her customers at Christmas time. She tinkered with the idea of leaving her corporate job and starting her own business after her husband bought her some books and chocolate classes. Eventually, she went to Vancouver and took a Master’s chocolate course, which put her on the path to become a professional chocolatier.

Before long, Elizabeth was selling her chocolate at the TD Market to great acclaim. She believes her past as a certified wine specialist helps her create chocolate creations that are one-of-a-kind. “I believe that my experience in the wine business and spending so much time thinking about flavor profiles and pairings helps me blend sweets as well,” says Elizabeth. “My truffles unfold the way that a fine wine does.”

TANYA STIEGLER DESIGNS Translating the wonder of nature into wearable art

Tanya Stiegler creates using ideas and aesthetics that she collects outdoors to set herself apart as a jewelry designer. She is meticulous about how she presents these ideas in her jewelry, explaining, “I spent 25 years learning the language of my craft: what each material is capable of and what each technique can achieve.” This attention to detail is driven by her dedication to craftsmanship, ensuring that each piece is made with functionality and durability in mind. A Philadelphia native, Tanya grew up playing with her grandmother’s rhinestone jewels and pop-it beads, and learned early on how jewelry was a powerful way to celebrate family milestones and remember connections with loved ones. Both of her parents loved gardening, and her mother, a master gardener, also passed on a passion for creating. Tanya started metalsmithing and goldsmithing in college, and worked in the jewelry business for several years before switching to the kayaking industry — another passion. But her love of jewelry-making was too strong, and she returned to the creative work full-time in 2007. Popular lines include her Tendril series, cast in silver or gold using real grapevine tendrils to create one-time molds, and a Fizz series inspired by water tumbling in a stream.

She learned to sew while still in high school and went on to earn a master’s degree in finance. Even while working for one of the largest banks in her home country of Bulgaria, Ivet practiced her passion through a small home design business she ran on the side. When her husband Lyudmil’s job brought their young family to the United States more than two decades ago, Ivet soon saw an opportunity to put her passion to work for the benefit of her new community. “I realized there was a marked absence of quality European

After suffering through a shockingly malicious vandalism in March of 2019, they have bounced back with determination. “As I understand,” says majority shareholder Reggie Meehan, “it was the largest herbicide attack in U.S. history.” More than $190,000 in plants were quarantined and then either thrown away or rehabbed for later sale. Looking at the “five acres of gorgeous” comprising Martin Garden Center now, one could hardly believe such an event had taken place. The tables in the greenhouse and courtyards are laden with blooming plants everywhere. “You just have to keep going – and growing. We’re as green as we’ve ever been,” says shareholder Linda Schweickert. The shareholders boast about their new hybrid pansy named Meehan’s Melancholy, a white pansy with just a little blue around the edges. Silas Lewis, owner of Samson Stone, took a chance after realizing there was a need for a reliable stone company in the area. “I took a leap of faith and started my own company,” says Lewis. “Now, we’re the largest stone installer in the Upstate.” But Samson Stone’s size doesn’t mean it only tackles large projects. “No job is too small for us, and rarely is a job too big,” says Lewis, who has over 70 expertly trained masons. “We’ll install a 40 square-foot fireplace or a 20,000 square-foot apartment complex.” In fact, Samson Stone has done large projects all over the region. They are responsible for the remarkable stonework at the Kroc Center, Cancer Survivors Park in downtown Greenville, Lakeside Lodge in Clemson, the pool house at Greenville Country Club and many other notable doctors’ offices, restaurants and commercial buildings throughout the Carolinas. Samson Stone’s work speaks for itself, but Lewis knows that earning the trust of the Upstate takes more than just expertise. “It’s a combination of communication, management and quality,” he says. “We communicate well, we have several project managers that provide the best service and we do quality work.” Because of that, Samson has built a reputation in the Greenville area that is rock solid.

HARMONY AT FIVE FORKS ESTABLISHED: 2017 WHAT INSPIRES YOU? “We welcome your family to join ours, because at its core, Harmony is ‘Family Serving Families.’ – Terry Howard, CEO, said.

Comforts of home, care of professionals, energy of life It’s been on few individuals’ short list to move into a senior living community. Perhaps, it’s because they’ve not yet visited Harmony at Five Forks in Simpsonville. Celebrating their three-year anniversary in June, Harmony continues to grow their family with services in independent living, assisted living, and memory care. The team, with 40 years combined experience recognizes the necessity to care for their residents, but similarly, for all those who love them. Adam Jennings, the Director of Marketing, believes, “Our community is successful because we are committed to transparent communication with our residents and their families.” Jennings

explained how residents are able to stay in their new home even as needs change. “What makes this community stand out continues to be the people I encounter, our beautiful accommodations, delicious meals and continuing care.” Barbara Rawls, a resident, explains. Harmony at Five Forks features luxury amenities, like restaurantstyle dining experiences and round-the clock concierge services. “But, we believe our care separates us,” Catherine Kirk, Healthcare Director, explains. Their founder, James Smith, believes, “By making the move to Harmony, you will live longer and with a much higher quality of life.” Take to that short list and experience Life in Harmony today.

Real estate law Trey Ingram and Hayes Holliday view every real estate closing as an opportunity to help people plant roots in the Upstate community. “We are actually helping our community grow, in tangible ways,” says Ingram. “We all absolutely love our community and it is really such an honor to get to help people achieve the American dream of homeownership, which is one of the most exciting and monumental purchases they will ever make in their lifetime.” Ingram, Holliday and their team love what they do, and it shows in the way they intentionally handle each closing from start to finish. They make sure to let clients know from the outset that they are here to help navigate the sometimes-overwhelming barrage of legal paperwork, and they tailor the experience for each client’s needs. And most importantly they make themselves available at all times for any questions that arise for the lawyers. “We want our clients to know

they are valued personally and are not just another file,” he says. “We make it a simple, approachable process that is celebratory and provides a unique experience.” Buying a home, especially for the first time, can seem daunting and intimidating, but Holliday Ingram helps make it stress-free and enjoyable for everyone involved. Holliday Ingram has maintained that commitment as the company continues to grow. With 17 staff members – up from eight just last year — and a new location in Charleston, the management team has remained tightly focused on the impeccable service customers have come to expect. The company keeps its roots planted firmly in the community by pitching in with organizations including the United Way; Genesis Homes, an affordable housing organization; and Fostering Great Ideas, a group that works to improve the lives of children in foster care.

SOUTHERN TRADITIONS Putting Southern Charm in your home decor

When Matt Cobb was in business school at Clemson University, he didn’t know that his own business would one day provide an essential element to the school’s newest building. Cobb, along with Stephen Wisdom and Sandy Williamson, built Southern Traditions into one of Greenville’s leaders in window treatments, installing shutters, blinds, draperies, motorized shades, exterior shutters and even automated awnings. Cobb and his partners at Southern Traditions provided all of the window treatments for the new Clemson University College of Business. At over 175,000 square feet, the project was quite an undertaking that included 400 roller shades. Many of the roller shades are automated, and some controlled shades adjust automatically based on the weather outside. The brand-new building, opened in 2020, required innovative window treatments, which is why they turned to Southern Traditions. The company also outfitted the new IPTAY building in November with top-of-the-line window treatments.

The commercial side of Southern Traditions has taken off in the past year, but the company still offers the best in residential work as well. “We carry great products, but above everything else, we value our interaction with people,” says Cobb. “It’s our goal to enhance the lives of our customers and our team members through establishing and maintaining quality relationships.”

Choose us. Change lives! Lisa Lane and Susan Sachs met in 1997 as two moms desperately seeking autism services for their young sons. They couldn’t find what they needed, so they created it together. Since then, Project HOPE Foundation has grown to a full range of innovative autism programs, serving across ages, across the spectrum and across the Upstate. The rate of autism has increased dramatically from 1 in 2,500 to its current 1 in 54, making the need for a lifespan of services greater than ever, particularly for those over 18. Adults with autism have the lowest rate of employment compared to adults with other disabilities.

Printed by HOPE, a t-shirt printing business run by Project HOPE Foundation’s young adults, is an innovative way to meet that challenge. Employees take orders online and print the t-shirts, while learning valuable job skills like data entry, sorting, inventory and quality control. They’re earning a paycheck, which encourages budgeting and taking care of a household. They are also building relationships and gaining confidence. “It’s important for them to learn those skills,” says Printed by HOPE supervisor Tish Amos. “This is about so much more than t-shirts. When you choose HOPE, you really are changing lives.”

MATT, DOMINICK & MICHAEL ABBATE Clearly the choice, reflecting excellence Matt and Michael Abbate’s father, Dominick, founded Golden Strip Glass in 1991. He got his start in the glass business in his native Long Island, and found work with a local company after migrating south in the early 1980s. When that company eventually closed, Dom set up shop in the back of his truck, and Golden Strip Glass was born. The business quickly grew out of Dom’s truck and into its current location in Mauldin, where the young Abbate brothers spent many afternoons and weekends cutting weather stripping, doing odd jobs, and learning the family trade. Both sons came to work with dad full-time as adults — Michael

running the residential end of things and Matt overseeing the commercial side — and are now running the show while Dom enjoys retirement. The local construction industry has grown rapidly over the last couple of years and the Abbate brothers have further expanded the original shop to include a state-of-the-art fabrication facility to keep pace with demand. They have also used their good fortune to give back through the donation of labor and materials used for improvements to local nonprofits Piedmont Women’s Center, Pleasant Valley Teen Center and Ripple of One in Seneca.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU? “I really believe in mentoring, helping people benefit from what I’ve learned along the way. I want to help the women who work for me become whatever they want to be.”

Shelly Raynes and her team can’t wait to blo you away.

4 Market Point Dr. Greenville (The Point) 864.283.6510 BloMeDry.com

Like many business success stories, Shelly Raynes’ tale began with a personal need. “I was growing out a haircut, and I wanted a blow-dry bar, and we didn’t have one,” she says. She had also been considering opening a business, and the timing seemed perfect for taking the leap. Last October, she opened her Blo Blow Dry Bar at The Point, near Whole Foods on Woodruff Road. The response has been beyond what she imagined. “It’s great for the busy woman,” she says. “You can come for a blow-out on Monday and your hair looks great for three or four days. And, you’re not cheating on your hairdresser!”

Seven signature styles make it easy to walk out with the look you want, and each staff member is highly skilled and trained by a corporate educator, so you don’t have to wait for a specific stylist. Appointments are encouraged, but walk-ins can often be accommodated. Blo can host events and gatherings that are fun and festive, complete with Champagne. The idea is offering an affordable luxury that is also a timesaving service. It offers the downtime and pampering many people love about a pedicure, but with even more noticeable results. “You could have on a couture outfit, but if your hair doesn’t look good, you don’t look good,” she says. “Good hair is the key, the ultimate accessory.”

Serenity Place is a residential treatment facility for mothers and their preschool-aged children recovering from substance abuse. Jamie came to Serenity Place in a dark space. Like many mothers that come to Serenity Place, her addiction was coming between her relationship with her and her child. Her son Oakley was no longer in her custody and she was living in beat-up hotels and doing everything it took to maintain her high. She felt alone and was living with untreated postpartum depression. Jamie completed 90 days in residential treatment and chose to continue her recovery in the step-down program known as the LOTUS Program. PHOENIX CENTER OF GREENVILLE Where families heal and find peace Derik had been in and out of detox for the past 10 years. He was using morphine intravenously every day. Derik knew the detox routine inside and out but when he was admitted for the last time in February 2018, he saw something on the daily schedule that stumped him — Introduction to Medicated Assisted Treatment (MAT). Derik showed up for the activity wondering what MAT was all about and felt hope for the first time in 10 years. When Derik completed detox he started MAT immediately. With medication, group-counseling and community support groups, Derik started to get his life back on track. He quickly found that he could think more clearly and make better decisions. Derik has made new friends and feels supported in his recovery but he is most excited about having his wife walk alongside him in recovery. They are thankful for the richness of their lives, not just surviving, but thriving. Now 2 years later, Derik has found peace and he supports others in recovery. He is not only giving back what was freely given to him, he is giving back what he fought hard for — HOPE.

PROACTIVE MD

At Proactive MD, patients are always our priority From affordable access to primary care that extends beyond clinic walls to prioritizing the doctor-patient relationship and providing patient advocates who will do whatever it takes to engage patients both on-site and through the health care community, we passionately partner with employers to elevate the standard of care for their employees and help people live fuller lives. Affordability While many Americans are struggling to pay for health care, a 2020 study proved our Care Beyond the Walls™ model of advanced primary care saves patients money. The Validation Institute, an independent, objective, third-party organization focused on changing health care, recently confirmed a study showing significant cost savings for our patients. The study revealed members engaged with us after two years cost $42 less per member per month (PMPM), while those that were not cost $129 more PMPM than they had at baseline. By partnering with companies to make health care more accessible and understandable, our model ultimately leads to cost savings. We are the first and only primary care provider to receive this distinction, cementing our dedication to serving patients by flattening health care cost curves. Doctor-Patient Relationship Remember when medicine was personal?

Today, the average primary care doctor has a panel of 3,000-4,000 active patients, according to The Oxford Handbook of Clinical Psychology, which means physicians only see each patient around three times a year, spending between just seven to 12 minutes per visit. Passionate about practicing medicine the way it should be, our provider team serves smaller patient panels for a more personal approach. This allows doctors to fully know their patients, improving outcomes and changing lives. Patient Advocacy Through our unique patient advocacy program, we guide patients through the entire continuum of care, finding better ways to provide health and care at every point. Our dedicated patient advocates manage every aspect of patient engagement. Using our proprietary analytics, patient advocates identify patients in need of support and proactively reach out, in addition to collaborating with physicians to ensure patients have access to the care and resources they need. Working both inside and outside the clinic, patient advocates are the devoted, trusted partners that walk side by side with patients to tackle all their care needs, questions and concerns. We provide the compassionate, personalized and comprehensive care that’s bringing health care full circle.

ESTABLISHED: 2014 DID YOU KNOW? A Harvard study found that improving the doctor-patient relationship can produce health effects as beneficial as some common treatments. KOPIS Proactive innovation He looked to ancient lore for a company name. For everything else, Andrew Kurtz is all eyes forward. “Businesses can’t stand still,” says the CEO of Kopis (née ProActive Technology), a software development company that’s been driving innovation for 21 years. “Our mission is leveraging technology to change the future.” Kopis established its brand by building transformative digital products that solve clients’ toughest problems. The secret is simple. Literally. “We believe software should be as simple as possible — but no simpler,” Andrew says, paraphrasing Albert Einstein. “I love an eloquent, uncomplicated solution to a complex challenge.” Kopis is synonymous with effective strategy — its name harks back to the legend of the Gordian knot, famously unloosed by Alexander the Great. “Where others struggled, unsuccessfully, to untie an impossibly tangled knot, Alexander took a different approach,” Andrew says. “He simply cut through the knot with a kopis sword … that’s the story of who we are. Innovation is always key.”

SENIOR ACTION So much more than you expected! “Some people see aging as a period at the end of a sentence. We think of it as an exclamation mark,” says Andrea Smith, executive director of Senior Action, a non-profit organization devoted to keeping adults over 55 active, healthy and engaged. Senior Action offers a variety of wellness programs, social and civic activities, art and music programs, and much more. Through eight locations across Greenville County, seniors connect with each other, enjoy lunch each day and take in a class or two — ranging from fitness, yoga and line dancing, to art, music, book clubs and educational classes. Senior Action also provides services to assist seniors with critical needs such as transportation to centers and doctors appointments, lawn care services and affordable housing.

ESTABLISHED: 1967 In 2020, Senior Action will open a new location on E. North Street that doubles the size of its current headquarters. The new space will include a 400-seat conference center, expanded space for wellness programs and a first-of-its-kind Fine Arts Center for seniors. “We serve 5,000 seniors each year, but we are barely scratching the surface. We are thrilled to reach more seniors in new and exciting ways,” Smith says. This is a great year to get involved with Senior Action. Whether you’re a current member who wants to get more involved, a former member interested in coming back, or someone who’s never been to Senior Action before, come join the fun and find your exclamation mark!

A CHILD’S HAVEN

ESTABLISHED: 1992 MISSION: A Child’s Haven is a 501(c)(3) organization that treats children with developmental delays as a result of limited resources, abuse, or neglect, and provides support and education for their families. VISION: Children in our community are thriving with families that nurture their success.

Therapeutic treatment center On the surface, it looks like a childcare center, but A Child’s Haven (ACH) is so much more. For 28 years they have provided healing therapy for at-risk, young children with social and emotional challenges while fortifying their families and strengthening our community. ACH breaks the cycles of abuse, neglect and poverty with multi-generational, mental health treatment. Trained educators and clinicians serve young victims of abuse and neglect in specialized classroom settings. All of the children in treatment have been kicked out of mainstream childcare settings and many live with adult caregivers who suffered childhood abuse and neglect. ACH’s licensed clinical social workers treat those families in their homes and work to strengthen the entire

family unit. ACH therapies equip families with behaviors and skills that keep children in their homes and out of foster care. Children move on to success in traditional classrooms, and caregivers find stability that allows them to live and work productively, making them contributing members of society. There are many ways to invest in the future of our community and support ACH. Financial gifts are always welcome, but ACH also welcomes volunteers and donations of diapers, pull-ups, clothing, cleaning items and lightly-used home goods.

COLE PROPERTIES Artfully designed, sustainably built

He learned carpentry as a teen, matching a skilled hand with a creative touch — and Trey Cole has been building a name for himself ever since. “I’ve always loved designing and building,” says Trey, founder of Cole Properties (née O’Leary Cole Inc., Trey Cole Design Group), whose passion for green living has influenced Greenville’s built environment for 35 years. “I have an eye for design and a heart for sustainable living.” These traits earned a variety of accolades, from Builder+Architect’s Home of the Year Award for a luxury lake house on Keowee to DHEC’s Earth Day Award for a certified “green” home in North Main. Over the past decade, Trey’s emphasis has evolved from custom building throughout the Upstate to infill communities within Greenville’s downtown core. “Sprawl doesn’t have to be inevitable,” he says. “Infill is part of my sustainable philosophy – build where there’s already density, infrastructure and a community.” As Greenville grows, so too grows Trey’s commitment to utilize existing resources in active, urban locales. “I like to think of infill as recycling the city,” he says. “For these projects to ‘work,’ they need to match the sense of place where they’re infilling.

The location dictates the design.” Craftsman Court, for example, blended into the Heritage Historic District on Townes Street; City Homes at Markley took inspiration from being part of the WestEnd Warehouse District. This fitting in isn’t always easy, but the effort pays off. “I’m never sure what my next project will be until we get the land,” says Trey. His next project – Augusta Street City Homes – is a Modern Tudor style, designed to match the fabric of the WestEnd community. These seven townhomes will feature four stories — each with a sky lounge on the top — along with open floor plans, a social kitchen, an elevator, and a two-car garage, just steps from all the activity of downtown Greenville. Trey and his wife live in one of his recent infill projects, walking distance from the Cole Properties office, which was upfitted from a decades-old abandoned store near the Amtrak station. “I like doing unique projects — and I can – because we are an everythingunder-one-roof company,” Trey says. “We’re the developer, the designer, the licensed builder, the general contractor — and the licensed Realtor, too. It’s our project at every touchpoint of the entire process, and that’s what makes us different.”

ESTABLISHED: 1986 DID YOU KNOW? Combining his enthusiasm for hiking and his desire to help others be their best, Trey is participating in the 28.3-mile Trailblazer Challenge to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

GENERATIONS GROUP Breaking the cycle, transforming lives For nearly three decades, Generations Group has been working to put an end to the cycle of abuse in South Carolina. As the only organization specifically designed to rehabilitate boys who are victims of physical and sexual abuse, Generations has achieved a 98% success rate – graduating young men from their program who have broken the cycle of abuse, never to demonstrate abuse themselves. “Our recidivism rate is about 3%,” says Brian Clark, executive director at Generations. “Statistically, if a boy comes to Generations, he is going to put an end to his cycle of sexual abuse.” Clark joined the organization 25 years ago and fell in love with the mission. Caring for about 60 boys at a time, Generations has graduated more than 900 boys from its program. The residential 84

facility provides 24-hour care for young men, who participate in twenty-four therapy sessions a week. In addition, Generations builds these boys into productive members of the community without putting them behind bars. “We take them to ballgames, volunteer for senior organizations, clean the Reedy River and teach them the importance of giving back,” says Scott Stephens, director of development. The staff and volunteers at Generations make it all possible. “I believe that the caring, trusting relationships that our staff are able to build with the kids while confronting issues that many people are not comfortable dealing with is what makes us successful,” says Clark, noting that the meaningful time spent with volunteers only enhances that.

DID YOU KNOW? Generations spends about $75,000 per boy each year to care for them. That is a tremendous savings from the estimated $180,000 it costs for a young man to be imprisoned for a year.

ENGINEERED SLEEP True direct-to-consumer business — manufactured right here in the Upstate Quality sleep comes from quality mattresses made right here in Greenville. Engineered Sleep Mattress Company was born in the Upstate and has locally manufactured eco-friendly bedding materials with real wool from real sheep farmers. Unlike the standard petroleum-based foam beds and fabrics containing fiberglass, Engineered Sleep uses organic cotton and sustainable products, which helps Earth-conscientious customers sleep at night. On a traditional foam mattress, what’s comfortable in the showroom may not be consistently comfortable over time. With the materials used by Engineered Sleep, the bed is going to feel the same out of the box as it will in 10 years. An important trend in the marketplace shows people care more about the environment and the products they buy. The shift led consumers away from cheaply made mattresses. They’re interested in quality and making more thoughtful purchases. People value sleep and what they’re sleeping on. That’s why Engineered Sleep strategically makes products that satisfy customers’ needs. Their goal is to manufacture as many ecological products as possible. The company’s plan is to leave the world better than how they found it. By hand tufting the layers of the mattress, they’re connected without an adhesive. Removing glue from the process allows the

bedding to be recycled and keeps it out of local landfills. Most mattress manufacturers treat fabrics with chemicals that are bad for humans and the environment. Engineered Sleep cuts out harmful processes to create a healthier world and community. Jay Orders partnered with John Renew and Carter Mahafee to establish Engineered Sleep Mattress Company. They’ve developed strong relationships with customers by focusing on specific needs, unique products and fast shipping. There’s a no pressure sales approach in-store and the customer experience is five-star. Big benefits of being a local business are supporting the local economy and problems can be fixed quickly. The company also donates mattresses to charity and sponsors Upstate soccer teams. Jay’s family legacy has made mattresses in Greenville since 1931. His great grandfather opened Orders Mattress Company, which became one of the largest mattress manufacturers in the country. It’s no secret deep sleep leads to more productivity, better mood and improved overall health. The team at Engineered Sleep invites locals to fall into a cloud of comfort with a new mattress, feel refreshed and simply sleep better than ever before while leaving the planet in a cleaner condition.

A beautiful marriage of art and science At Vicario micro-distillery and farm, Renato Vicario and Janette Wesley create 15 different liqueurs and gin from a considerable compendium of knowledge of the historical, cultural and mythological characteristics of the herbs, spices, nuts and fruits which have been used for many centuries in liqueur making. Inspired by centuries of Italian traditions, Vicario’s products express old-world wisdom for new-world endeavors. Folks can visit their farm and facility and take a tour where they can see, touch, smell and taste many of the farmfresh ingredients grown on the property that go into their award-winning liqueurs. The other ingredients come from the family’s other farm

in Tuscany, Italy, offering a rich array of estategrown elements. The primary mission of Vicario Liqueurs and Spirits is to offer an outstanding taste experience in the glass. If not grown directly by the Vicario family, the herbs, fruits and spices are organically-grown or wild-harvested from the regions and places of the world where the plants are renowned for exceptional quality and taste, presenting the best of terroir in every element. SEASONS CATERING Full-service catering and event center Seasons Catering has been one of the top caterers in the Upstate for years, but their recent growth promises to propel them to the top of the culinary scene. Just last year, owners Julie Ellis and Mark Bergstrom moved Seasons into a new location — four times larger than their previous space. Their new home allows them to expand their catering services, but it also encouraged them to use the space in new, exciting ways. “We transformed the space into the largest catering kitchen in the Upstate,” says Julie. “We do a lot of corporate catering, but we also offer cooking classes, room rentals and team building for businesses.” Seasons provides a space for corporate groups to use for off-site training and team building with hands-on cooking activities and classes. “So many are looking for new options for team-building activities, to get out of the office. We are providing a fun, unique opportunity,” she says. As you enter the foyer of the new building, there are four huge windows that feature a view of the stainless steel commercial kitchen as far as the eye can see. Julie says, “People walk into our space and are amazed by what they see. Our location finally matches the beauty

of the food we create.” The topof-the-line equipment and space allow Seasons to accommodate any catering challenge — whether it’s a small rehearsal dinner or a corporate gathering for thousands of people. While the space and tools allow Seasons to take on new challenges, a catering business is only as good as its chefs — and Julie and Mark are two of the best. Both are professionally trained chefs, but they come from different backgrounds. Mark has worked at universities and hotels in America, while Julie brings an international flavor to the business. “I love international food. I lived in Asia for nine years,” says Julie. “I teamed up with Mark because we both cover so many aspects of food, hospitality, people and events.” While Seasons is the obvious choice for catering and corporate events, some people may want a taste of Julie and Mark’s creations without an event. In that case, you can find fresh-baked goods from Seasons at Crave Coffee, another of the duo’s businesses. You can also find their breakfast and lunch items at The Hub at Park 37. With all of these options and experiences, it is no wonder Seasons Catering is changing the culinary scene in the Upstate.

CAROLINA BAUERNHAUS BREWERY & WINERY Handcrafted beverages from the finest local ingredients As his name suggests, Keston Helfrich’s heritage is German, but the founder of Carolina Bauernhaus has created a culture that thrives on locally sourced ingredients. In 2020, he and his partners will bring that spirit of synergy and some award-winning brews to Greenville’s West End.

Thornton has constructed numerous biodiesel and ethanol facilities, launched breweries and grown ingredients for many. They met attorney Brad Thomas, whose practice covers issues affecting alcohol producers, retailers and distributors, at a home brewers’ club meeting.

Helfrich got his unofficial start over a decade ago with a simple home kit. He admits to more than one botched batch, an apparent hallmark of home brewers, but his inventiveness soon became a way of life.

For their second location, the Bauernhaus owners have chosen a part of downtown some call the Wild West — but they won’t be braving the frontier alone. As neighbors in the Poe West development, the Greenville Tech Foundation’s Center for Culinary & Hospitality Innovation, LaRue Fine Chocolate and Unlocked Coffee Roasters will enhance the creative process.

“A can of malt syrup, some hops…I thought it would be fun, and then I wondered how far I could push this,” Helfrich said. Initially, Helfrich continued to work remotely as a web developer for a New York company before taking on the “dubious distinction” of head brewer full time. In addition to Helfrich, two others helped build the Bauernhaus (German for farmhouse). Together, they set the scene for a classic joke: “A brewer, an engineer and a lawyer walk into a bar…” In this case, they walked into a successful partnership. Helfrich met David Thornton, a bioprocess engineer, at a home brew competition. Neither recalls who won, but approximately five years later, they were in business. 96

LIVE LOCAL 2020

“This is an amazing opportunity to collaborate,” Helfrich said. “We’ll have a one-barrel system designed for experimentation. It always start with ingredients, like the coffee and the chocolate, and how to integrate them. It’s an old-world style people don’t see anymore, enhanced by these fantastic elements.” Greenville’s Bauernhaus will feature an ample outdoor beer garden and an array of European-style pub ales. Helfrich says their award-winning Farmhouse Rye IPA (FRIPA) will be in the rotation and is a standout for him; however, his favorite beer “changes on the regular” with new experiments inspired by new ingredients.

COMMUNITY JOURNALS

Making Greenville More Flexible

T

here comes a time when most people feel a little out of shape and perhaps unable to enjoy sports and hobbies they love. When that time came for

Ashley Gondi, she literally decided to

stretch her limits.

“I’ve been skiing since I was four and had

always led an active lifestyle. After I had my

daughter, we were in Vail, and I found myself

feeling sore and not really able to hang in there for the whole week,” she said.

That began to change during a later trip to

California. Gondi and her husband discovered StretchLab where “flexologists” help clients increase flexibility. Returning home, Gondi

was dismayed to find the closest studio was

in Charlotte. Before having her children—now

six and two—she had a career in finance. Her husband owns multiple businesses, and their combined skills eventually led to franchise

ownership of StretchLab on Augusta Road.

“We actually looked at more than one company,

but StretchLab requires an extensive background and education for employees. We identified with their values and phenomenal positive energy,” she said.

Newcomers sometimes question this relatively

new modality, thinking stretching is something they could do themselves. Gondi insists,

however, that the results of having someone “do the stretching for you” exceed what one could achieve alone.

“Why go to the dentist to have your teeth

cleaned? It’s the same idea with this type of

deep stretch,” she said. “You feel good while

it’s happening. You feel good when you leave— physically and mentally.”

Two more local StretchLabs will open soon.

With all that to manage, Gondi doesn’t get to ski

often, but the experience is better when she does. “I can do side twists and buckle my boots

while I’m still standing,” she said. “I’ve realized

how important range of motion is. Stretching has definitely brought new quality to my life.”
