PINWHEEL empowering the commun i ty to prevent ch ild abuse

SUPPORTED BY GREENVILLE FIRST STEPS PRIMROSE SCHOOL OF GREENVILLE

Welcome Last week I was at the Publix with my son William. We were walking out the doors when we heard this horrible screeching and wailing sound coming from the shopping cart racks. As we rounded the corner we saw a father and his 3 year old son having a “discussion” about whether he was going to ride in the front or back of the shopping cart. The father made his point, that it was unsafe. The child replied by literally falling on the ground and kicking and screaming.

Every child will have a temper tantrum. Every parent will feel like he is the only one experiencing it! Everyone else in the grocery store will walk to the other set of doors and pretend like it is not happening.

I held William’s arm, gave a “Bless your heart” look to the dad and we walked to our car. While I buckled William in my first thought was “whew, I am so glad that phase has passed for us”. Then, as I drove home there were things I wish I had told the dad. I wish he knew that we have all been there. Our kids are unique individuals, but all three year olds have fits, and often at the worst places. I wish he knew that this too will pass. The great thing about a phase, is the phase passes. I wish he knew that your child isn’t causing as big a scene as you think. Sure, we hate it when our child has a tantrum, especially in public, and there is that moment when we think every eye is upon us. This extra anxiety causes us as parents to escalate a situation, because we are so convinced that we need to shut it down before someone calls the cops. But truly, if we stepped back and looked around, we would see what most people see: a young child having a fit like every other child. I wish I had told the dad all of these things. I wish I could have set his mind at ease by letting him know that this too will pass. 2

Project Pinwheel is the Upstate’s community wide child abuse prevention effort aimed at delivering that message: We have all been there. The campaign promotes a set of protective factors; small things parents do every day to reduce abuse in the home. One protective factor is Social Connections: We know that when parents have connections with other parents, there is a voice in their ear saying: We have all been there, and this too shall pass.

Superheroes & pinwheels It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s superman holding a pinwheel! Wait, what? What is going on here? Why is superman holding a pinwheel? Why is that mother wearing a cape? Little league baseball coaches are superheroes too? Let me explain. During the month of April, Project Pinwheel spends a lot of time telling individuals how they prevent child abuse on a daily basis. We all can see how a parent can prevent child abuse by understanding their child, having realistic expectations, having a support group, etc. But

And doesn’t that make the barista, the CEO, and the mom, all superheroes for children? Doesn’t that make us all superheroes for children and preventing child abuse?

how does the CEO of a small business prevent child abuse on an every day basis? By creating jobs and providing opportunities for families to reduce some financial stress, the risk of abuse and neglect decreases. How about a barista? By providing opportunities for a stay at home to get out of the house and have a cup of coffee with a friend, the mother gets a chance to ask someone who has been there or who can relate, is it normal for my child to be doing this!?”

Parental resilience Managing stress and functioning well when faced with challenges, adversity, and trauma. Families who can cope with the stresses of life, such as unemployment, poverty, and homelessness, have resilience. Resilience often comes from inner strengths such as faith, humor, supportive relationships, problem solving, and flexibility. Resilience is what allows parents to continue giving their children the nurturing care they need even when times are tough.

Child abuse affects us all and especially those professionals working the investigations and cases. The team approach helps with communication and collaboration and teaches people how to work more effectively and to reach out to one another, to break the barriers. No one wants to have to work these cases, but when you do you it helps to have that seamless communication with others and to know you are doing everything possible for the child and family”. Participants included healthcare providers, teachers, guidance counselors, social workers, counselors, law enforcement, first responders, clergy, child care providers, guardian ad litems, attorneys, foster parents, coroners, parents and many more. Some of the educational trainings offered are Mandated Reporting, Abusive Head Trauma, Unexpected Child Death; SIDS, Unsafe Sleep or Homicide, Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy, Drug Endangered Children and Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. The division is currently working on new trainings for 2015. For more information on the division, trainings or group presentations call 864-454-1090 or mgreco@ghs.org.

Celebration Sunday: On April 12th, the faith community joins together to help spread the message of prevention of child abuse and how we can all get involved. Celebration Sunday is an opportunity for churches to take the message of the 5 protective factors and make them relatable to their congregation. Churches can choose how involved they want to get, whether as simple as a bulletin insert or planting pinwheels or as fully engaged as

having a sermon about the importance of protecting children and complete Sunday school curriculum on keeping children safe. Visit www.ProjectPinwheel.com to see what churches did last year for the first Celebration Sunday and to download the packet of resources specific to churches.

"As the new pastor of Augusta Heights, I'm thrilled to be a part of a church that has supported Project Pinwheel from its inception. On April 12th - Celebration Sunday - our worship will focus on our call as people of faith to care for the most vulnerable in our society. It is greatly encouraging that churches want their actions in the community to be consistent with their words in their places of worship." – Greg Dover – Pastor, Augusta Heights Baptist Church

What are those pinwheels all about?

Has anyone ever asked you, what are those pinwheels all about? Did you know? Did you “Google it?” Did someone tell you it was for springtime? Well, here you go, here is the answer: the blue and silver pinwheel is the national symbol for child abuse prevention month (CAP month). Businesses, nonprofits, churches, schools

and individuals unite together to visually spread the message of what we can all do to prevent child abuse. Pinwheels, traditionally planted in gardens of about 100, are planted throughout the upstate. Visit www.ProjectPinwheel.com to learn how you or your organization can get involved.

knowledge of parent and child development Understanding child development and parenting strategies that support physical, cognitive, language, social, and emotional development. Social and emotional competence of children Having family and child interactions that help children develop the ability to communicate clearly, recognize and regulate their emotions, and establish and maintain relationships. Social and emotional competence refers to nurturing and supporting interactions that help children handle their feelings and develop secure attachments to their caregivers. Pinwheels for Prevention

Cut out pinwheel and fold corners marked with circles into the center. Secure with glue onto a wooden dowel or pin onto a pencil eraser. Blow it to spin and enjoy!

Children’s Trust is proud to be the state chapter of Prevent Child Abuse America and lead the Pinwheels for Prevention campaign in South Carolina. The pinwheel represents the happy, healthy, carefree childhood every child deserves and the commitment to give every child the opportunity to thrive in a safe and nurturing environment.

Taking Steps for Our Children Children’s Hospital of Greenville Health System (GHS) thanks Greenville First Steps for leading the way in the prevention of child abuse. We all take child abuse prevention a step in the right direction by caring for our most valuable resource—our children. At GHS Children’s Hospital,we provide patients and their families the full spectrum of care—medical to emotional needs, primary to specialty services and prevention to rehabilitation. We recognize that children aren’t small adults, and one size doesn’t fit all, so we deliver “whole child” care that’s just the right size. Working together, we can keep our children healthy and safe. Let’s step up!
