The Rotary “Read-to-Me” By Ralph Williams with an update by Jean Calvert and Katherine Muller For many years, Rotarians have been active in efforts to reduce illiteracy. Close to a billion people worldwide lack the most basic literacy and numeracy skills. Many more are functionally illiterate, lacking the skills necessary to meet the demands of everyday life. The ability to read and write and do simple math is not only critical to progress and prosperity, it is necessary for the very survival of individuals in a modern society. Those who cannot read and write will always be on the periphery of prosperity in our nation. Literacy is not just a third-world problem. The number of functionally illiterate in the Greenville area is startling. The National Institute for Literacy reports that 20% of the adults in Greenville County function at 5th grade level or below in reading and math. Statewide, that number climbs to 25%. There are homes without books, magazines and newspapers in Greenville. There are homes in which parents are working two jobs and they have no time to read to their children. Children

in these homes experience a “poverty of words”, hearing approximately 600 words a day compared to 2150 words a day in a professional home. A nationwide study revealed that 40% of fathers NEVER read to children. As reading is the vehicle for learning in school, some children enter school unprepared for success. Because we know that 90% of the brain’s growth occurs from birth to 5 years of age, language development of all children must be a priority. One of the primary findings in A Nation of Readers is that “The single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children.” The Literacy and Numeracy Committee of the Rotary Club of Greenville is focused on improving both literacy and numeracy skills through two programs: Rotary “Read-to-Me” and Money Smart. Dr. Sara Mansbach created the Rotary “Read-to-Me” Program in 1995. Dr. Judith Prince chaired the program 2003 through 2005, revitalized it and has led the way to today’s success. Currently, this Rotary committee is chaired by Jamie Moon of the Center for Developmental Services. Approximately 60 Rotary Readers are reading aloud to children in nine child development centers, and almost 400 children are being read to this year. Readers are focusing on the fun of reading aloud to children, emphasizing the importance of reading in future success – and, a longer attention span through words, pictures, and stories. Most of all, they are providing role models and showing that reading is fun! >>

Roper Mountain Science Center Association | Rotary Club of Greenville | www.RoperMountainHolidayLights.com | LIKE US ON

Prior to beginning to read, most Rotary readers participated in a training program focused on the importance of reading in stimulating language development, and on successful techniques for reading aloud. Every reader was provided a Rotary Book Bag with age-appropriate books. Every reader has a name badge that identifies them as a Rotary “Read-to- Me” volunteer. According to Doris Santanello, principal for the Greenville County School System’s six child development centers, the Rotary Club’s involvement in their “Read-to-Me” program has made a measurable impact in the lives of at-risk 4 year olds. Again, these are children who may have no books in the home, and no one reading to them. As a result, they are not able to identify their letters and numbers as they should. The Rotary Club’s volunteer efforts and resources help them catch up to their peers. As an example, last year, the Rotary Club provided the same book to each student from which teachers created curriculums and special activities. The books then went home with the children at the end of the project. (For the 2011-2012 reading year, the Rotary’s “Read-to-Me” Program expects to provide free books to students twice in the year.) In the last few years the Rotary volunteers have also created wonderful family events with many literacy activities at such venues as the Upstate History Museum, the Greenville County Library, and the Roper Mountain Science Center. At the end of the evening, the families again took books home. Story time is made special each and every week when Rotary members come out and read to the children. This is an activity the children very much look forward to. At the end, they are usually pleading for “just one more story!”

Doris Santanello, Greenville County System’s Development Centers Principal

Doris Santanello vouches that all these activities carried out by the Rotary Club increase vocabulary and concept development, but more importantly, they create bonds with the children and introduce literacy to their extended families. But, the experience has a wonderful value for volunteer Rotarians, too. Charles Warne has been a Rotary Reader for several years. He says, “The joy of seeing children learn from reading is profound. You receive much more than you give in this program.” Another reader says that “Everyone should have the privilege of starting their day with such a positive and uplifting experience as reading aloud to children.” ■

The Rotary Club Impacts Lives

T

wo Rotarians have played a particularly important role in the life of Damaris Taylor. Damaris met Rotarian Dr. Judy Prince of USC Upstate when he attended Youth Leadership Greenville. Youth Leadership Greenville was founded by Greenville Rotarian Russell Stall. Dr. Prince became a mentor to Damaris, and Russell Stall would later offer him an internship at his nonprofit, Greenville Forward. It was through these relationships that Damaris, now making a Comparative Study of Religion at Harvard, became familiar with the Rotary and applied for the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA). He won this award in Summer 2007, and attended a week-long leadership camp at Erskine College that he described as “life-changing” for many of those who participated. Damaris returned as a counselor the next two summers, and his sister attended in 2011. Meanwhile, as a senior at Greenville High School, he applied for a Greenville Rotary Scholarship, and was awarded $1,000 which has helped him with books, spending money and transportation to Boston. The oldest of five children,

What’s another exciting result of his association with the Rotary Club of Greenville, S.C.? Well, when Damaris spoke to the Rotary Club in the fall of 2010 at Dr. Judy Prince’s suggestion, Senator Jim DeMint was in attendance. He was so impressed with Damaris that he invited him to be his guest in Washington, D.C. at the State of the Union Address this last January. Definitely an event to remember! The Rotary Club has had a very positive impact on the life of Damaris Taylor through the friendships formed with Dr. Judy Prince and Russell Stall. They have mentored Damaris who is representing the Upstate of S.C. in such a stellar way at Harvard. Congratulations, Damaris Taylor, on all your accomplishments!

May your holiday season be merry and bright!

Damaris was the Student Body President at Greenville High and a participant in Bridges to a Brighter Future. He hopes to study abroad, perhaps in the Czech Republic, before graduating from Harvard. Upon graduation, Damaris plans to be a minister. As a Harvard freshman he founded a ministry called “Faith and Action” which has grown from “six guys in Bible study” to now having 160 members.

Empowering Adults in our Community By Jane Thomas of the Rotary Club of Greenville, S.C., and Executive Director of The Greenville Literacy Association Rotary Charities Grants provide books and resources for Greenville Literacy Association’s adult learners. The Greenville Literacy Association received a $2,000 Rotary Charities Grant to purchase books and math software for volunteer tutors to use with their adult literacy students at the Rotary Family Literacy Center at the YWCA. In the 20102011 Program Year, seventy-seven adults studied in the Adult Basic Education program, and thirtyone studied in the English as a Second Language Program (ESL) at the Rotary Family Literacy Center. With the support of the Rotary Charities Grant, adult learners were able to make progress towards improving their educational levels.

a year later he was promoted to Fleet Maintenance Manager. That job ended when the Hollingsworth Company dissolved in 2009. Through the years in the back of his mind, Richard had always wished he had finished school. At the age of 62, Richard enrolled in the Pre-GED program at the Greenville Literacy Association. He says, “My time with Greenville Literacy was one of the most positive learning experiences of my life. Words cannot express the good the tutors and staff do for those of us who, for whatever reason, did not finish high school when we should have. Their reward is seeing us ‘late bloomers’ blossom into educated adults.”

“My time with Greenville Literacy was one of the most positive learning experiences of my life.”

Richard H.

Richard H. left school at sixteen in Virginia with a plan to get a head start on getting “rich” instead of wasting his time on an education. He worked in construction and auto repair until he moved to Greenville in 1990. He went directly to work for John D. Hollingsworth as an auto technician, and

Richard obtained his GED in January 2011 and is currently enrolled at Greenville Technical College. He achieved the Dean’s List in his summer session and is moving toward his goal of receiving a degree in accounting.

The mission of the Greenville Literacy Association is to empower adults to participate more effectively in the community by providing quality instruction in reading, writing, math and speaking English.
