A Holiday Note...

In its 22nd year, Roper Mountain Holiday Lights continues to grow. The crowd-favorite Caterpillar light display is back. We’ve added a few more displays, and a brand new, 45-foot lighted Christmas tree that you won’t want to miss! The tree is 25 feet in diameter at the base and contains 20,000 white, red and green lights! In addition to driving through the lights, I hope you will take the time to park and visit Winter Wonderland. There you will find Santa, colorful Holiday Cards painted by students from Greenville County Schools, many more lights, concessions, and other fun happenings! You’ll also find Santa’s Living Room, where optional family photos may be purchased as a remembrance of your trip through Holiday Lights!

May your holidays be healthy and bright!

While Roper Mountain Holiday Lights is a magical, family-oriented experience, we’re proud to boast that the event is put on by a not-for-profit organization that is co-managed by the Rotary Club of Greenville and the Roper Mountain Science Center Association. In its first 21 years, Holiday Lights has raised over $1.93 million for the benefit of charities and educational programs in the Upstate. This has been made possible thanks to our volunteers who spend literally thousands of hours throughout the year to make Holiday Lights a reality, to our wonderful sponsors who support our efforts, and to the thousands of visitors that come through Holiday Lights each year. A Special Thanks to you all! On behalf of everyone involved with Holiday Lights, I hope you enjoy the sparkle of the lights, the fun and joys of Winter Wonderland, the twinkle in Santa’s eye, and the sights and sounds that are part of this event. Your visits help us raise more funds and are the reason why our volunteers volunteer and our sponsors sponsor. Thank you for making Holiday Lights part of your holiday celebrations!

Happy holidays to all!

The Rotary Club of Greenville

Gives Back

T

he Rotary Club of Greenville – the state’s oldest and one of the world’s largest – has supported the Greenville community since 1916. With the motto, “Service Above Self,” the club has sponsored many landmark service projects over the years, such as Rotary Lake at Camp Greenville, Textile Hall, and a YMCA health center. At present, the club’s focus targets literacy, ranging from educational to financial. Projects benefiting from this focus include Teacher of the Year, Salute to Education, Money Smart, the Science and Engineering Fair, and the awarding of 5 new four-year college scholarships annually.

In 2005, in conjunction with the YWCA and Greenville Literacy, the Rotary Club helped create the Rotary Family Literacy Center. In addition to the Literacy Center, Rotarians participate in the “Read to Me” program, a program in which Rotarians read to disadvantaged pre-schoolers and elementary aged children. The club also recognizes the importance of vocational service through its Career Day, where students shadow a Rotarian to learn more about different career opportunities, and Law Enforcement Day, where local law officers are recognized and rewarded for their service.

Internationally, Rotary has led the way in the near elimination of polio worldwide, as well as funding humanitarian grants for nutrition programs and the installation of water wells and clean water systems.

While the Rotary Club of Greenville is responsible for many philanthropic efforts in the Greenville area, the one that is perhaps most beloved by the community is the Roper Mountain Holiday Lights. Beginning in 1991, the Rotary Club of Greenville has co-sponsored this event and has helped raise more than $1,930,000. Last year, more than 20,000 vehicles attended the lights, carrying an estimated 83,000 visitors to the Roper Mountain Science Center. The Roper Mountain Holiday Lights generated more than $130,000, with the proceeds being split between Rotary Charities and the Roper Mountain Science Center Association. This year, the Roper Mountain Holiday Lights will be illuminating the night sky from Thanksgiving until December 30, 2013. Happy Holidays

Holiday Cards in Winter Wonderland

from our family to yours.

The large, colorful Holiday Cards displayed along the path in Winter Wonderland are actually works of art created by local students. Starting with a blank, large piece of plywood, school art classes create the spectacular Holiday Cards each year. This year, a fun, “audience appreciation” contest will take place, and plaques will be presented to the first through fifth place winners. Thanks to our 22 participating schools:
