Welcome

On behalf of the members of the Charity Ball Board of Greenville and The Rose Ball Committee, we welcome you to the 21st Rose Ball. Tonight’s Ball is a time to celebrate the generosity of the businesses, foundations, and individuals in our community. Over the past forty years, The Rose Ball has raised more than $2,400,000 to benefit the physical, educational, emotional, and cultural needs of the people of Greenville. Organized in 1971 by the Charity Ball Board and held biennially, proceeds from The Rose Ball were initially raised to support the new St. Francis Hospital. The Rose Ball has continued its dedication to St. Francis by setting aside a portion of each Ball’s proceeds to benefit a community project of the Hospital. This year’s funds will be used to support development of the Bon Secours St. Francis Health System-Breast Health Center. In addition, eleven other organizations will receive proceeds from tonight’s event, including American Red Cross-Greenville Chapter, Cancer Society of Greenville County, Clement’s Kindness Fund for the Children, Governor’s School for the Arts Foundation, Greenville Free Medical Clinic, GHS University Medical Center, Meyer Center for Special Children, Pendleton Place Children’s Center, Project Host, Safe Harbor, and YMCA-Judson Community Center. Since our beginning, over fifty agencies and programs in our community have benefited from Rose Ball proceeds. The Rose Ball is one of the most beautiful and elegant affairs in the southeast. Thousands of roses, shared from local gardens of our neighbors and friends as well as those donated by professional florists and others, were used to decorate the Poinsett Club tonight. This spectacular display of beauty sets this event apart from others. More than a year of planning and effort by the Charity Ball Board and The Rose Ball Committee went into making tonight’s Ball a reality. Please take a moment to thank these individuals when you see them. We also wish to thank our many dedicated volunteers who have donated their time and creative talent. Without their enthusiasm we could not make this evening a success and one that is more special each year. To our many donors and guests, we say “Thank You!” We appreciate your generous support, given year after year, which funds so many needs of our community. Thank you for helping us to continue the tradition of “The Grandest Ball of Them All” for another year. We hope that you enjoy this wonderful evening.

Beneficiaries

The American Red Cross – Greenville Chapter – In 2010, the Red Cross responded to 97 disasters and provided assistance to 441 individuals within the community. The Red Cross is not a government agency and is the sole provider of immediate emergency disaster assistance in Greenville. The following equipment will be purchased: disposable pillows, blankets, floor mats for children, special needs cots, ice chests that can be utilized in shelter situations, and the chapter’s shelter trailer will receive a new set of tires.

Bon Secours St. Francis Health System – A new state-ofthe-art Breast Health Center and Mobile Mammography coach will expand St. Francis’s services into the community. A center of excellence will be created and mobile mammography will be provided to those who may not otherwise have access to screenings. This offers a more holistic approach to women’s health with emphasis on mind, body and spirit. In addition, St. Francis’s mission is to be a constant source of strength and guidance for patients and their families throughout the healing process. The Cancer Society of Greenville County – Lifesustaining specialized food and nutritional supplements are vital for local cancer patients. The nutritional supplements are essential for patients to have any kind of hope of winning their battle with this disease. Since these supplements are often the only food patients can tolerate, having the ability to distribute them vastly increases the patients’ chance for survival.

RoseBall_2011_RLB.indd 6

Clement’s Kindness Fund for the Children – While the Bi-Lo Charities Children’s Cancer Center works to heal the child, Clement’s Kindness works to heal the family. It specifically provides financial support to families facing the tremendous challenges associated with having a child with cancer. Discretionary funds are available for emergency needs as well as non-medical needs, including mortgage payments, utility bills, travel expenses to out of town treatment facilities, wigs, special diet food, and funeral costs. The Governor’s School for the Arts Foundation – The GSAF’s Medici Student Aid and Enrichment Fund supports basic needs and educational experiences for the school’s disadvantaged scholarship students, who comprise 30% of the student body that requires financial assistance. Basic necessities such as eyeglasses, medicine, college application fees, doctor’s appointments, and academic support materials are provided. In many cases, appropriate clothing needed for performances and interviews are also supplied. This helps level the playing field for the students, allowing them to fully participate in activities regardless of their family’s financial constraints, heightening their self-worth and self-esteem. Greenville Free Medical Clinic – With increased dental and nursing staffing and additional dental, medical and lab supplies and equipment, these clinics will be able to assist the growing number of low-income, uninsured patients who do not otherwise have access to any health care. Last year, there were over 12,000 patient-visits at all four sites and the pharmacy dispensed over 40,000 prescriptions.

Beneficiaries

Greenville Hospital System – The Medical Experience Academy – The Medical Experience Academy is a collaborative program partnering with the Greenville County School System, USC, Clemson, SC State, Furman and Claflin College. The goal of the MEA is to provide an interactive learning and teaching environment that promotes the pursuit of clinical and non-clinical healthcare careers. Basic academic development tools, such as tutoring, test preparation, and technology support will be provided for bright, financially-challenged students so they can further their academic and career goals. Meyer Center for Special Children – Partial funding of a new mini-bus will provide safe transportation for preschool children with disabilities. The Meyer Center considers the furnishing of transportation to students to be a crucial component of its services. Currently, 71% of its students are transported to/from the Center each weekday. Without this service, many of the children would be unable to attend the Center.

Pendleton Place Children’s Shelter – Pendleton Place’s onsite medical program provides complete pediatric services for its residents. These services include comprehensive medical exams for every child within 72 hours of arriving at the shelter. Many children who come to the shelter arrive with injuries, illnesses, or have been sexually abused. Some have never seen a medical professional making it extremely important that each child receive a complete medical evaluation.

RoseBall_2011_RLB.indd 7

Project Host – The “Feeding Hungry Children Project” prepares healthy, well-balanced meals for children of low-income families enrolled in after school enrichment programs. It will provide nearly 15,000 nourishing meals to children who may or may not get fed at home. These children will be better able to focus and perform in school and stay healthier and happier throughout their childhood. Safe Harbor – Safe Harbor will create the first children’s program for counseling and advocacy for children who have been affected by domestic violence. Safe Harbor provides both shelter and support services for victims of domestic violence and their dependent children. Similar to Safe Harbor’s treatment model for adults, one of its most important goals for a children’s program is to build resiliency in the children affected by domestic violence and to promote long-term healing. YMCA Judson Community Center – Scholarships will be provided to low-income families with children in need of preschool programming. The children of Judson community are among the most at-risk children in Greenville County for poor economic, educational, and social well-being. The goal of the preschool program is to foster optimal learning for children ages 3 to 5. The program helps the children meet developmental milestones, engage in language and cognitive activities, and increase the opportunities for parents to be involved in their child’s educational growth.
