Welcome

On behalf of the 2009 Charity Ball Board of Greenville and the Rose Ball Committee, we welcome you to the 20th Rose Ball. As the longest running charitable community benefit in Greenville, tonight’s Ball is truly a time to celebrate the generosity of the businesses, corporations, foundations, and individuals of our community. Over the past 38 years, the Rose Ball has raised more than $2.1 million to benefit the physical, emotional, educational, and cultural needs of the people of Greenville County. Since our inception, more than 50 nonprofit organizations in our community have received grant funding. Organized in 1971 by the Charity Ball Board and held biennially, the Rose Ball was initially formed to support the new St. Francis Hospital. Today, the Ball continues this commitment to St. Francis by dedicating a portion of each Ball’s proceeds to benefit a community project of the Hospital. In 2009, funds will be used to expand the Bon Secours St. Francis Bone Marrow Transplant Center. In addition, 14 charities in our community will receive proceeds from tonight’s event. These include A Child’s Haven, Alliance for Quality Education, Cancer Society of Greenville County, Greenville Free Medical Clinic, Greenville Hospital System Obstetrics Center, Greenville Tech Foundation, Junior Achievement, Loaves & Fishes, Meals on Wheels, Meyer Center for Special Children, Project Host Soup Kitchen, The Salvation Army, Triune Mercy Center, and United Ministries. The Rose Ball continues to be one of the most beautiful and elegant affairs in the Southeast. This evening was created to present an ambience of timeless elegance and features more than 5,000 gorgeous roses shared from the gardens of our neighbors and friends and donated by florists, horticulturists, and grocery markets. This spectacular display of beauty is one of the most cherished aspects of the Ball and distinguishes this event from any other. Over a year of planning and teamwork between the Charity Ball Board and the Rose Ball Committee went into making this event a reality. Please take a moment to thank these individuals when you see them. We also wish to thank our many devoted volunteers who have donated their resources, time and talent. Their dedication and enthusiasm have made this incredible evening a success and one that is more special each year. To our many donors and guests, we thank you. Your generous support, which funds the many needs of our growing community, is appreciated year after year. We are delighted and honored that you have joined us for “The Grandest Ball of Them All!” Please have a wonderful evening.

A Child’s Haven – Parent Education, Family Support, and Child Abuse Prevention Programs uplift and transform young children whose development has been delayed by poverty, abuse and neglect, advancing the learning activities essential to child safety and family stability.

increase in new patients occurred. With a current caseload of over 4,000 patients, approximately 50 new patients are being seen each week. With a projected increase in new patients in 2009 of over 62%, we will provide free health care services and prescription medications to more than 6,500 underserved residents.

Alliance for Quality Education – “New Teacher Toolkits” for first-time teachers improve teacher retention in Greenville County Schools and ensure that every child in our school district has access to a strong teacher. These toolkits contain extra help and proven strategies that empower teachers with the skills to succeed and help students excel.

Greenville Hospital System Obstetric Center – The GHS OB Center is the single largest provider of prenatal care in South Carolina, caring for more than 2,800 pregnant women annually. The “Perinatal Awareness for Successful Outcomes” Program improves access to care, helps immigrants navigate the health care system, and empowers Latino families to ensure healthy pregnancies. This is achieved by prenatal classes, high-risk home visits, community outreach, advocacy, and improving the cultural competency of health care providers. GHS is partnering with the South Carolina Public Health Institute and The Duke Endowment to expand this program in the Upstate.

Bon Secours St. Francis Health System – The Bone Marrow Transplant Center will be expanded into a Center for Hematological Malignancies and Stem Cell Transplantation. The downtown facility improves access to critical medical treatment within the Greenville community and alleviates the need to travel long distances for care. Cancer Society of Greenville County – A vital cancer prescription medication program ensures that local cancer patients receive life-saving chemotherapy and pain relief treatments. In 2008, over 3,400 Greenville County patients and their families received various forms of assistance reducing the cancer mortality rate of the underserved in our community. Greenville Free Medical Clinic – Clinical hours and services will be expanded for newly unemployed and uninsured Greenville County residents who do not have access to health care for acute and non-acute conditions. For the second half of 2008, a 47%

Greenville Tech Foundation – The “Quick Jobs With A Future” Program insures a better quality of life for Greenville County residents by providing access to job readiness training for a variety of high demand employment opportunities, some completed in 90 days or less. Junior Achievement of Greenville – Financial responsibility and economic literacy programs will be expanded to teach 375 Greenville County School District disadvantaged middle and high school students. The 7th grade “Economics for Success” Program and the 10th grade “Success Skills” Program are taught by business volunteers who utilize hands-on real life activities to

teach students the financial benefits of graduating and becoming self-supporting citizens in their community. Loaves & Fishes – This mobile perishable food program will be augmented with new communications systems facilitating the connection of food donors, recipient human service agencies, and community volunteers in Greenville County. In 2008, Loaves & Fishes delivered 989,313 pounds of perishable food to more than 100 local hunger relief agencies.

Meals on Wheels – MOW enhances the lives of homebound individuals by providing nutritious meals delivered daily by more than 100 volunteers throughout Greenville County. In 2008, MOW delivered 365,943 meals, served 721 new clients, and recruited 616 new volunteers. New refrigeration equipment to insure food safety during transportation will enable MOW to help these fragile citizens preserve their independence and dignity by remaining in their homes. The Meyer Center for Special Children – A new mini-bus will be purchased to safely transport children with disabilities from all areas of the Upstate to the Center and to enrichment activities. This bus will help accommodate 78 children served in these programs. Project Host Soup Kitchen – In 2008, Project Host Soup Kitchen served 78,727 meals with over 100 community volunteers for less than $2.00 a meal. During the last two years, Project Host has experienced a 23% increase in meals served. In 2008, Project Host’s C.C. Pearce Community Culinary School graduated 22 students, helping them achieve self sufficiency with culinary training and life skills.

The Salvation Army – Smart Centers, the after-school tutoring program of The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club, ensures that over 700 Greenville County children at risk of failing receive the tools and additional instruction needed to be successful in the classroom. Using a nationally proven structured approach to improve core competencies, Smart Centers provides an extra 3 to 4 hours of daily education activity during the school year. The goal is to stabilize and advance student performance through consistent one-onone tutoring. The Smart Centers program has a 95% success rate. Triune Mercy Center – “The Next Step Program” helps clients re-establish themselves in the community through intense case management that includes counseling, basic life skills, education, and job training. The goal is for these local individuals to secure stable jobs, safe affordable housing, and regain their dignity and independence. By 2010, Triune will assist 10 families in obtaining affordable housing. United Ministries – The “Family Stabilization Program” assists families who are in financial crisis to maintain their housing. The goal is to prevent homelessness for 10 families who have experienced recent job loss. This empowering program provides financial aid, financial counseling, and job search support to help families emerge from desperation and regain hope and independence.
