Meeting Every Level, Every Need It doesn’t seem like fourteen years, but it has been just that long since Summit Hills Retirement Community first opened its gates. What began as over 50 acres of cleared land in the shadow of Mary Black Memorial Hospital, is now Spartanburg’s premier retirement community. With expansions three years ago that included a comprehensive wellness center and a skilled nursing center, Summit Hills has grown to serve all levels of care and almost every need that older adults experience. Residents of Summit Hills have witnessed the growth of this award-winning community and seen it rise to meet the requests and lifestyle changes of an active adult population. With its flexible dollar dining restaurant plans, person-centered healthcare, and abundant wellness and exercise offerings, Summit Hills delivers progressive options in healthy and social living. Residents at Summit Hills can choose from single-family homes or apartments in independent living or from assisted living, Alzheimer’s care and skilled nursing in our healthcare centers. The wellness program and rehabilitation options are offered in all levels of care. Residents of Spartanburg in need of healthcare services do not have to be a previous or current member of Summit Hills to benefit from the healthcare centers. Tours are currently offered every day of the week.

The King of Wellness For Older Adults Is Crowned Again Summit Hills, a Spartanburg, SC based retirement community, announced that the community’s wellness program has won the Assisted Living Federation of America’s (ALFA) 2012 ‘Best of the Best’ Award in the category of Clinical Wellness. The community’s “purpose-based wellness programming” took home top honors in one of the most competitive categories, Clinical Wellness. Purpose-based wellness programming is a collection of wellness programs developed specifically to counter the effects of chronic diseases or afflictions common among older adults. The impetus for developing the wellness initiative was recent data which showed that a majority of Medicare, Medicaid and personal health care expenditures for adults 65 and older fall into two categories: the long-term management of chronic diseases and the immediate care required following a major health event such as a fall or stroke. 2

Wellness Director Tonya Ray says the community’s purposebased wellness programming addresses these needs by offering members alternative solutions to managing certain chronic diseases and by seeking to prevent avoidable health events such as falls. If a negative health event is considered unavoidable, she says the programming seeks to reduce a member’s length-of-stay in a long-term care setting. One program, called ‘Muscles in Motion,’ was designed to improve stability and mobility for older adults with Parkinson’s and other muscular diseases. After completing the program, members noted a 19.2% improvement in their performance on a timed assessment. “These wellness programs are changing our members’ lives,” said Ray. “This award is a formal acknowledgement of the good work we see our members and team doing every day in our wellness center.” Program submissions were judged for their uniqueness in the industry, innovative use of ideas from outside the industry, impact on residents, their families, staff and operations, embrace of industry core principles, the strength of quantitative and qualitative results, and strategic vision.
