As we celebrated the fourth anniversary of Joan Herlong & Associates Sotheby’s International Realty this fall, I’ve reflected on our progress over four rapid years. The growth we’ve had as a company since September 2017 has been incredible, astounding, even shocking. Our growth can be tracked in our sales volume, which speaks for itself, or more tangible aspects such our new Clemson/ Lakes office, opened in July 2021. And then there’s our roster: We grew from ten Associates in 2017 to over 40, and counting, today. Success and growth like ours always begs two questions: Why? How? It’s the culture. That is, the unique relationship we have with our Associates, and that they enjoy with one another. Our strategy as a brokerage has been to foster a collaborative, helpful environment, by attracting the right kind of Associates, and then focusing on their individual growth.

There is a famous quote from Peter Drucker, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” To me, this means an organization’s success is determined by the people who comprise it, more than any topdown strategy that might be in place. Yet strategy still has its place.
