Your grandparents’ weddings these are not—nor should they be. With new interests and inspirations, weddings are taking on a character of their own. Through the lens of Greenville’s Red Apple Tree Photography, we take a look at how three couples have remixed their Big Day into something truly personal and unique. BY JAC CHEBATORIS
FEBRUARY 2013 / 67
WINDOW SEAT: (Previous and this page) Allison and Justin Mast were inspired by the rustic charm of having an outdoor wedding near the North Carolina home of Allison's great-great grandmother. Justin and his groomsmen stayed in the home the night before the big day, and the groom bathed in a nearby creek before the ceremony (page 70).
Love, soft as an easy chair. Love, fresh as the morning air. Love is a many splendored thing. Love and marriage go together like a horse and carriage.
Unless, perhaps, like satirist from the late 1800s Ambrose Bierce, you have a more gimlet eye on the institution: “love: a temporary insanity curable by marriage.” Some things can usually be counted on at the memorable event of Your Wedding: one of the bridesmaids/groomsmen making a rather well-lubricated (from the preceding cocktail hour) toast—sufficient in its bawdiness to burn a full crimson flush on the faces of the guests; the near mishaps with last-minute emergencies turning plans A or B into C or D—such as the time a bride, while getting her hair done hours before the wedding receives a text from her DJ that he is canceling; and the inevitable probability of at least one meltdown—lucky if it’s just a stage-fright-shy flower girl. But these moments—the imperfect moments, like a marriage itself—is what makes it special, no? In an era that sees the inflated exorbitance on WE TV’s Platinum Weddings, or the frivolity of Britney Spears’s 55-hour-long marriage in 2004, or even the OCD wedding tendencies like that of the late Elizabeth Taylor, there is definitely not a one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to saying your “I Dos.” Whatever moral/political side of the fence you sit, marriage comes in as many shades and flavors and arrangements as unique as the two individuals entering into the union, which makes it fun (well, unless you’re asking the bridesmaid whose own closet might do double duty as a boutique specializing in taffeta).
functions as their office, though they’ve learned part of working together means they don’t work together in the same room. The photographer leading the seminar in Vegas the day that Crystal and Keith met was more than just their unwitting matchmaker. “His message was so clear, and it’s a principle that we keep at the core of Red Apple Tree Photography today,” says Crystal, “and it’s that this business is about relationships.” Both Crystal and Keith’s outgoing and down-to-earth personalities are helpful when trying to set their subjects, on the biggest day of their lives, at ease, but their “coupleness” adds another nuance to getting the best shots. You want to definitely avoid the dreaded “grip and grin,” an industry term Keith evokes, when it comes time to capturing intimate moments, for couples who might not be so adept at public displays of affection, no matter the occasion. “A lot of times people can feel funny in front of a camera, so we’ll put down the camera and embrace [to show them how to pose] so they feel comfortable.” Julia Roberts’s character, Shelby, from the film Steel Magnolias repeatedly says of her wedding palette, “My colors are blush and bashful,” thus securing from 1989, on, the idea of the “perfect wedding” for anyone who aspired to such elements, and that it doesn’t matter what anyone else says of your designs and desires for the day. Shelby had her own idea of what she wanted and so it went for her, as it does for countless couples (okay, mainly, let’s be honest, the brides) increasingly bearing toward an idea of who they are and what best represents them—and not so much what cookie-cutter bridal magazines advise, what the mothers and their mother’s-mother’s weddings would dictate, or any other untenable standards that don’t offer much comfort in their reflection. In other words, there are a lot of cupcakes lately instead of wedding cakes cemented in fondant, as the non-traditional wedding becomes, well, kind of a “new” tradition than ever before. Here, we take a peek at a few of the award-winning duo of Red Apple Tree’s (WeddingWire’s Bride’s Choice Award winners for two years in a row) outof-the-box wedded bliss moments.
K
eith Carson and Crystal Heart have been a big part of The Big Day for a lot of people. Together, they run Red Apple Tree Photography, a wedding and portrait photography business in Greenville. If fate and destiny have a hand in many love matches, theirs is one for the books. In 2009, Crystal, 33, a native of Kelowna, British Columbia, met Keith, 31, from Easley, “on the first day, of the first hour in a room full of 10,000 people” at a wedding photography convention. In Las Vegas, naturally. Less than a year later, the girl from Canada had moved (way) South to Greenville (“I had to exchange ‘eh’ for ‘y’all,’” she says), and soon after, the pair launched Red Apple Tree, an evolution of Keith’s former Keith J. Carson photography and graphic design business to include his business partner, and now life partner, to whom he proposed last March with a llyn strong–designed, 18-carat purple sapphire on a rose gold band. Appropriately unique for a couple whose photography style is such: fresh without being overly precious. “Modern brides do not want their parents’ traditional photography so much anymore,” says Crystal, over a steaming mug of blueberry tea in the house the couple shares, which also
GIVING TREE : Keith Carson and Crystal Heart (above) , the the creative forces behind Red Apple Tree Photography, have been privy to many Big Days. With Keith's proposal to Crystal in the form of a llyn strong–designed 18-carat purple sapphire ring (above right) , the couple is now embarking upon their own journey. FEBRUARY 2013 / 69

he told her guests ahead of time to wear comfortable shoes. Oh, no—this was not just some backyard garden wedding where sinking heels in the grass would be the main issue. At Allison and Justin Mast’s wedding on August 13, 2011, guests were going to be hiking just a bit through some gravel and dirt roads to reach the top of Yellow Mountain, near Highlands, North Carolina, where the ceremony would take place. Not in a lodge or cabin or shelter. On the rock face. Which would explain, in this case especially, the bride’s choice of cowboy boots, which, like BBQ and biscuits at the reception, have become one of the latest wedding trends. Allison’s great-great grandparents had lived in the area, and she has fond memories of her family always getting together there. The couple decided to forgo the church for the expanse of nature. The “old mountain home,” where the family had gathered for years still stands but is without running water, and served as the accommodations for the groom and his groomsmen the night before. The morning of his own wedding, Justin bathed in the creek that runs nearby; perhaps a telling testament to his being able to go with the flow from that day forward.

ARM & HAMMER : A pre-packaged wedding was simply not for Irene and Steve Butera. DIY elements and personal interests featured prominently on their wedding day: nature-themed decorations and invitations from her, home-brewed beer from him, and an Indian-food reception for the both of them.
FLOW CHART: John Pendarvis's dual identities as artist and computer programmer are complementary: symmetry, logic, flow, and balance are integral to both professions. Find out more about Pendarvis at artistsguildgallery ofgreenville.com
After receiving a degree in math from South Carolina State University and pursuing graduate work at Clemson in numerical analysis, Pendarvis moved to New York to attend The Art Students League. It was during art school that the artist made the decision to take his work to the next level. “One of my professors was talking about decisions you make in your life,” says Pendarvis, “and that at some point you’re going to have to decide you’re no longer an amateur. So after that when anyone asked me what I did, I would say I was a professional artist.” The computer geek in him has always been in perfect harmony with the artist. “Computer programming is a lot like art,” says Pendarvis. “It has symmetry, it has logic, it has flow, it has balance—art has all of those things.” It has been said the best computer programmers are musicians for their ability to see beauty in complex numerical systems. It should come as no surprise Pendarvis plays an instrument. “I went to college on a saxophone scholarship,” he says. Pendarvis has no fixed subject matter, but when something strikes him, be it masks, dogs, or even saxophones, he goes at it full steam, creating a series which often develops into 40 or 50 works spanning two to four years. “As you’re working on one piece, it may lead you in a direction to try this or try that,” says
82 TOWN / towncarolina.com
Pendarvis. “I like working on a lot of pieces at one time.” His media are just as varied as his subject matter. Now working on a series of 36 12-by-12-inch self-portraits, Pendarvis is experimenting with mixed media, collage, conte crayon, palette knife, charcoal, and encaustic, which is painting with hot wax. “I’ve been working with encaustic for a couple of years,” says Pendarvis. “It’s a little different technique, but I really like the texture.” Pendarvis notes that even though painting with wax has been around for centuries, it’s recently become the “in” thing to do. “So I’ve backed off of it a little bit because of that,” he says. “I don’t want to be en vogue—what fun is that?”

The average burger gets a makeover at Grille 33. Each burger (named after downtown Greenville districts) starts out with an Angus patty before getting a neat twist. Try the Stone, which is topped with cheddar and sandwiched between a glazed donut, or add a little breakfast flavor with the Southern Connector’s waffle, bacon, eggs, and syrup. This restaurant funds the Channel, an all-ages community space and music venue. $-$$, L (Sun–Mon),

The newest concept in the Larkin’s family, Grill Marks marries oldschool charm with creative twists for a modern burger joint. Brioche buns sourced from a local baker and 100-percent-certified Angus beef form the base of these succulent burgers. Gourmet cheeses, mushrooms, and bacon round out the list of toppings. Quality is the key ingredient at this deli franchise begun in Columbia in 1941. Specialty sandwiches cover the bases, from the Cole Special Dipper (turkey and bacon crumbles blanketed in cheddar cheese) to the Brown Moose (a roast beef and provolone melt with Groucho’s signature Formula 45 sauce, a spicy, herb-infused blend of Russian and Thousand Island dressings). South by Southwest
Joe Comin recently donated 25 pieces of Southwestern Native American pottery to the Fine Arts Center, Greenville County’s fine arts high school. The collection represents New Mexico tribes such as Acoma, San Juan, San Ildefonso, and Santa Domingo (currently known as Tewa Pueblo). Also included are works from Arizona’s Hopi Reservation. The collection spans more than 100 years of history—one of the finest and most comprehensive collections of Native American pottery at any high school in the country.—Andrew Huang The Fine Arts Center will have the complete pottery collection on public display beginning in February. The school’s hours are Mon–Fri, 9am–3:30pm, at 102 Pine Knoll Dr, Greenville.
