S

o, it is official: spring is here. We have packed away our winter clothes and whipped out our fave tees (we’re saving the bikinis for next month!). And we’re not the only ones getting into the spirit of spring; Marbella’s beach clubs are winding up for the summer season and kicking off with their opening parties. And what does that mean?? We’re out shopping for a whole wardrobe of new white dresses (top tip girls: remember to wear wedges as the decking at these parties is a killer on spiky heels). Look forward to seeing you at Ocean Club, Buddha Beach and Nikki Beach, where our team of fashion experts will be picking out our favourite white outfits – so the pressure is on to find the most glamorous and original outfit to make you stand out from the crowd.

You have seriously had your head in the sand if you live in Marbella and you haven’t heard about La Sala. Where have you been? In our world it seems impossible to get through a weekend without hearing the name mentioned over and over again, as the one and only place for the city’s beautiful people to hang out for drinks and dinner. Packed every week night and almost impossible to get into at the weekend, La Sala deserves its hard-earned notoriety. The décor is slick. The service is even slicker and the menu is top notch. This heady combination, as well as its central location, make it the place to be seen. Nowhere else in town is as busy or as buzzing as La Sala. We’ll see you there – if we can get a table.

Baby blue denim is back this season, and not just babyblue, oh no! Really any blue you wish, and that is the beauty of this ubiquitous trend. A wide expanse of bluehues is ripe for the picking, and, even if you don’t know it yet, there will be blue suits for each and every one of us. It wasn’t too long ago that we saw double-denim on the catwalks. A seemingly tricky trend to pull off, but thankfully this is the one trend we can all safely say we own. From wide-leg, rolled cuffs or the impending 70s trend, it’s all about baby blue to keep it fresh and spring-like. Pioneered by the lovely Kate Moss, and visible on the catwalks of Derek Lamb, Thakoon, Céline and McCartney, we are falling in love again with all that’s mistyblue! Understated sexy is where it’s at this spring, The era of Hervé Leger body-con is kind of, a bit, well, done! And like anything, if we see too much of it (in this case skin, super high heels that you can’t dance in, super short skirts and cleavage) we get bored. Isn’t it funny that Marilyn Monroe was considered one of the sexiest women in the world, and she was never seen in a short skirt? Anyway, this season we are treated to a plethora of sheer loveliness, from YSL, Chloé, Ferretti and Dior; all with a nod to our more demure, grown-up side. There’s also an emphasis on one of the staple parts of my wardrobe – the blouse. It’s one of my most trusted types of clothing, and worn with jeans or to the office, a sheer blouse can give you that womanly, self-assured kick. Alluring and sensuous, with skirts in great lengths and patterns to die for, I suggest we catch a breeze-in-chiffon and simply float into spring.

Dolce & Gabbana called its spring 2011 collection: Sicilian Sensuality, describing it as, “the sensual kind of elegance and tradition that characterises the typical trousseau of southern Italy.” Well, for the romantics in us, this hits every note. Almost entirely in white, this collection speaks of purity and feminine charm. Exquisitely delicate and effortlessly appealing, Stefano and Dominco revive a fabric more commonly associated with our grandmothers. Lace is chic again. Bottega Veneta and Céline offer the cutest of gauzy short-skirts, and the most artful of fine-spun filigree. The soft white designs this season are not only feminine, but powerful in their unassuming charm. With a choice of floor length maxis, sheer shifts and lace fronted play suits, I’m expecting this year’s white parties to be a rapturous sea of style.

DESIGNER FOCUS

Bespoke TREASURE ART JEWELLERY designer Katie Eula Thompson, talks to Daisy Omissi about the inspiration and passion that go into creating her one-off designs

Girls, it is time to open up your treasure chests and make space for the some new jewellery pieces to add to your collection. You are just going to love the kooky, quirky, adorable designs by up-and-coming “jewellery artist” Katie Eula Thompson. Her bespoke charm bracelets are all hand-made and so intricate in detail that you spot something new every time you look at them. Although she is based in London, Katie’s jewellery has become a global phenomenon thanks to the internet. We caught up with her in Marbella where she was working with author Ana Fischel to create a bespoke collection illustrating the themes in her children’s series The 12 Quests. When we met 29-year-old Katie, she and Ana had been up until 4am buzzing with ideas and inspiration for the unique TRÈS CHIC 27

we want to take with these designs.” Katie began making her own jewellery when her aunty gave her a pair of hand-made earrings for Christmas a few years ago. “I loved them and I thought, ‘hang on a minute, I could do this myself,’ so I started making jewellery for friends and family. Eventually I had so many pieces that I thought I’d have a go at selling them,” she explains while showing us a selection of her most popular designs. Her first port of call was Portobello market in London. “I absolutely loved having a stall there. It was amazing to interact with my customers and get their feedback,” she says bursting with enthusiasm. The next step for Katie was to put her pieces online at www.etsy.com – a website created especially for independent artists selling their hand-made or vintage products. This opened up a whole new world of potential clients, who now keep her busy with personalised commissions. “I started getting requests from all over the world, especially America,” she says. Business was soon booming, and Katie had to give up her day job to focus on her jewellery business. Each of Katie’s pieces is unique and they can take weeks to put together; they are made from a mix of semi-precious stones, vintage charms and charms that she makes from clay or wire. The whole process is incredibly labour intensive. “I spend a lot of my time sourcing materials and vintage pieces on the internet and in small boutiques and markets in London. Sometimes I am looking for something in particular then I spot something completely different, which takes me in a new direction,” she says. “That’s why I call my work ‘Treasure Art’, as I go on a treasure hunt every time I embark on a new creation.”

Clockwise from left: A piece from The 12 Quests collection; The design process; A book from Ana Fischel´s series The 12 Quests; Unique charms; Katie hand-making wire charms.

and unprecedented project. Katie’s four-day visit had already turned into a ten-day creative marathon. “Ana was researching on the internet for fairytale-inspired jewellery when she spotted my Hansel and Gretel bracelet. She made contact with me via email and we spent six months discussing ideas for a collection based around her children’s books,” Katie explains. “Now I am here in Marbella to make that collection a reality. It has been a very exciting experience working with Ana. We have a very similar idea of the direction cloc

Above: An intricate piece from the collection created for the 12 Quests. Right: Katie with Ana Fischel.

Each piece of jewellery tells a different story, but many of Katie’s designs are inspired by fairytales or other themes from popular culture – her Betty Boop bracelet is a big favourite among her customers. There are also recurring themes in her work such as the tiny cupcakes and gingerbread houses she makes from clay. “I have so many ideas; I am constantly pulling pieces apart and putting them back together. My house is full of notebooks that are crammed with sketches and notes; I don’t know if I will ever have time to make everything that is in my head,” she admits, smiling. Watch out for the collection that she is designing with Ana. There is one piece for each of the 12 books, and they include items from the story such as Blackbeard’s key from the first quest. Items from other fairytales also feature such as Sleeping Beauty’s spindle, a lock of Rapunzel’s hair and the Snow Queen’s mirror. We particularly loved the little bottles that have a story wrapped up inside them. The pieces retain a Victorian feel so they feel like they could come from the era that the books are set in. From these samples that Ana and Katie have created, people will be able to order a bespoke piece, made to order, online at: www.zorluna.com

FASHION’S MAN OF PEACE Designer Hatem Alakeel has created a bracelet that is not just funky but also sends a message of harmony across cultures

Saudi Arabian fashion designer Hatem Alakeel is spreading a very simple message across the world: PEACE. Fashion icons and celebrities from Marbella to the Middle East are wearing his Swarovski crystal studded PEACE bracelet with pride. Fans include king of shoes Christian Louboutin, Hollywood actors Stephen Dorff and Dolph Lundgren, who also lives in Marbella, and Diane Von Furstenberg. As well as Dolph and his family, many other Marbella residents have been spotted sporting the eye-catching arm candy. Socialite Saeko Hamada was snapped wearing her bracelet at a recent event, while other well-known faces on the social scene such as Carmen Lomana and Olivia Valere have also shown their support for the PEACE campaign. This international trend was spear-headed by another Marbella resident, Ahmed Ashmawi. Hatem Alakeel is an acclaimed international designer who has been dubbed the Middle Eastern Tom Ford for his sophisticated label: Toby by Hatem Alakeel. Known for his contemporary take on traditional Arabic menswear, Hatem has been crowned, “King of Thobes”. With the current social and political turmoil in the Middle East, the launch of his PEACE bracelet comes at a particularly relevant moment in history. Hatem says he designed the bracelet as a way of promoting his vision for global harmony that transcends nationality, race, religion and status. According to the talented designer, “Not only is PEACE the best option, it is the only solution.” The entire proceeds from the PEACE bracelet from Toby by Hatem Alakeel go to various international children’s charities. If you want to join the PEACE brigade, you can buy your PEACE bracelet exclusively at Kasser Rassu Gallery-Showroom (info@kasserrassu.com). Price 35€.

We were starting to wonder why so many Marbella kids were giving us a serious run for our money in the style stakes. How could it be that so many tots were looking trendier than us? Babes in Blumarine, diddies in D&G, bugs in UGGs? What is going on in this town? Then we happened upon Kings & Queens in Puerto Banús where we discovered the answer to this mystery. This designer boutique for kids stocks an amazing selection of clothes and accessories for girls and boys from 0-16. From Armani to Fendi, Guess, Roberto Cavalli and many more brands, Kings and Queens is THE place to shop for parents who want their kids to be cute with a touch of cool. It is also crammed with lovely gift ideas – we know where we’ll be heading next time one of our friends becomes a yummy mummy! The recently refurbished boutique is beautifully designed and as chic as any adult fashion boutique we know. Luckily there is another excuse for us to shop there – it stocks UGGs for adults as well as kids. Matching mummy and daughter UGGs? Too cute! And for those of you who are too busy to make down to Puerto Banús to pay Kings & Queens a personal visit – don’t panic – you can shop online too. TO DESIGN OR NOT DESIGN Watch out fashionistas, our catty columnist is on to you... This month our anonymous commentator gets her claws into Victoria Beckham I was listening to the radio the other day, when the chat show host and two women were discussing the input, or lack of, that Victoria Beckham puts into her clothes range. Woman A argued that being a style and fashion symbol made her eminently suitable to be a designer. Woman B said there were several ways to enter the fashion industry. One was to be so naturally gifted that at 10 or 12 years old, you were sketching dresses; not just children´s sketching, that only your mother liked, but sketches that showed real promise, and this promise continued through your teens. A slight variation on this is the ability at this early age of being able to make a dress from a roll of material, a pair of scissors and some pins. The more conventional approach is through college, work for a designer and any natural talent will show through. There can, of course, be a combination of any or all of these approaches. Woman B further argued that being a non-singing member of a girl group and then failing spectacularly in a solo singing career was not proof of artistic ability. How does the talented girl or boy who has genuine 54 TRÈS CHIC

ability, goes to college for three or four years, works their socks off trying for a break only to see WAG1 promoting a clothing range obviously designed by a Roberto or some such. VB apparently once made the comment, “I can wrap material around me,” to which the obvious comment is, “I do that every time I get out of the bath dear.” Ask yourself the question: Do you think that if you gave VB a pencil, a piece of paper, or asked her to choose some material and gave her a pair of scissors, she could design a collection on her own? Woman A said artistic people always have teams around them, like chefs for example. This is such a poor analogy, as I have no doubt whatsoever that Jamie, Heston, Delia etc could rustle up a stunning meal completely on their own, I doubt VB could run her own bath. Now, of course, no-one knows whether anyone actually buys VB dresses, forget the spin emanating from Mr Fuller’s office. I saw her compared to Coleen Rooney the other day, however, I would argue that Coleen Rooney, who has just signed a contract to design for Asda, is in a totally different place. George at Asda is hugely successful, giving good value for money, and a lot of Asda customers, especially the young ones, will welcome the name Rooney on their label. If, on the other hand, you are a fashionista and spend thousands on an outfit, would you really want the name of a woman on your garment who´s only ability is forgiving her footballer husband’s indiscretions? Just a footnote to prove my point. Last year, Land Rover announced that VB had designed the dashboard on its new Land Rover. The following week, Autocar published a letter from a man who said he was in the market for a Range Rover, Cayenne, or a Toureg, but if the owner of Land Rover saw fit to waste money on such a ridiculous promotion, it was off his list. ¨What´s a dashboard David?¨

e are always in the thick of it at Marbella’s coolest parties, so of course, we couldn’t miss the launch of the world’s biggest party… ever! The Global Party, which is being billed as the social event of the decade, is an ambitious charity project that will aim to pull off 80 parties around the world within 24 hours on September 24 and 25. All the proceeds will go to charities such as ARK (Absolute Return for Kids). Guests will be invited to sip Champagne in Paris, Vodka Martinis in London, Manhattans in New York or Margaritas in Mexico, and with ARK’s celebrity supporters including the likes of Damien Hirst, Elizabeth Hurley, Simon Cowell, Jemima Khan and Boris Johnson, it will set a unique and glamorous scene for a global cause. To give a taste of what is to come the UK-based organisers splashed out on a huge launch event at Puente Romano on March 17, inviting a guest-list that included global jet-setters from as far away as LA and Tokyo. We loved rubbing shoulders with the A-list crowd who were given a golden key as their pass to complimentary drinks at the bar in Suite all night. Stephen Webster added some glamour to the evening by accessorising several stunning models with drop-dead gorgeous jewellery, while Fashion Villa put on a fabulous fashion show. We are counting down the weeks until the main party takes place in September.

GOING, GOING, GONE…

Why is it that some artistic geniuses do not conform to the accepted norms of society? The latest in a long line is Gibraltarian fashion designer John Galliano with his anti-semitic rant at two women. Did he not think his diatribe full of obscenities would damage his reputation? It has of course probably ended his career, as Dior has fired him, and let’s be honest who is going to wear a Galliano ensemble now? Is it conceit? Did he think that the normal rules of society don’t apply to him? Did he feel that because he was so revered that he could do and say as he wanted? Was it just a mental aberration that he now regrets? Whatever the reason it is a shame; the shame is not that he does not deserve his fate, for he surely does, the shame is that fashion has lost one of its leading lights. TRÈS CHIC 59

BEACH BIJOU By Daisy Omissi

We visit the stylish home of Marbella artist, Gabriela Girs, whose creativity transformed an old house by the beach into a unique and quirky family home TRÈS CHIC 61

abriela Girs is a shining example of how you can “take the girl out of Finland but you can’t take Finland out of the girl”. This talented artist may have lived in Marbella for 10 years, but she certainly hasn’t lost that innate sense of style that so many Scandinavian women are born with. The thing that makes Gabriela different is her ability to combine minimalist chic with the warmth of her personality and the depth of her creativity, to produce something that is indefinable; something that is totally unique. This magic “je ne sais quoi,” permeates every aspect of Gabriela’s life from her inspirational and emotive works of art, to the clothes she wears and the design of her beautiful, beachside home in Benamara. When we pull up outside her house in the Très Chic van, there is little to give away what is waiting inside for us. The white-wall façade is discreet with just a hint that it is hid-

ing something special – a large, single, silver contemporary plant pot holding a piece of gnarled, painted driftwood. We ring the doorbell and all hell lets loose – Gabriela’s dogs (a towering Great Dane named Brisa and Toby, a cuddly cross-breed) announce our arrival, and only calm down when their serene owner opens the gate with a welcoming smile. Gabriela may have been born in colder climes, but there is nothing Ice Queen-ish about her mischievous eyes and infectious laugh. She invites us into her one-level house, which is a maze of inter-connecting rooms and unexpected spaces, creating an Alice in Wonderland effect. As she leads us down the main corridor, which is lined with Gabriela’s fairytale paintings, it feels like we are following Alice down the white rabbit’s hole and into an enchanting Never-neverland. Once we had convinced Gabriela that she really didn’t need to open a bottle of champagne for us, she took us into her sleek kitchen and put on the Illy coffee machine instead. Generous by nature and in spirit, she insisted on serving croissants and fresh orange juice while we worked, and she talked about how she fell in love with this gem of a house. “My husband I spent a year driving around Marbella and looking at places. When other people saw this house they said it was a disaster, as it needed so much work, but we could see passed that. We knew we could make it into something special; it had real potential.” That was five years ago, and the Girs have since turned this 25-year-old villa into a charming family home that is chic but also homely. Gabriela did all the interior design herself and her husband, Sacha, took charge of all the architectural changes. “I love living here because I can throw on my tracksuit and take the dogs for a walk on the beach,” says Gabriela as she floats around the house in her Juicy Couture jumpsuit and Dior sandals. “At night we can hear the waves crashing on the shore and during the day there is a flock of parrots that visits the garden.”

Her latest painting is for her first solo exhibition at Kasser Rassu gallery and features an enormous Nordic horse; this is a theme that crops up again and again in her work. The inspiration for this recurring subject obviously comes from the large wooden Trojan horse that takes pride of place in the living room, and is Gabriela’s prize possession. “My father gave me the horse for my 21st birthday. It is 400 years old and comes from Venice. Of course, I didn’t appreciate it all when I was younger,” she admits. “Now I can’t imagine life without it.” The horse theme even follows through into the bedroom of Gabriela’s three-year old daughter, which features a brightly coloured pony on the wall. This room is every little girl’s dream – ballet shoes and princess dresses hang from the walls alongside more fairytale illustrations from Gabriela. Next door is the master bedroom, which has more of an African theme than the rest of the house. “From the beach you can see the lights of Africa, which inspired much of the décor for the house, but particularly our bedroom,” explains Gabriela. The zebra wallpaper combined with animal skins on the floor give it a safari style that is currently as popular in the interior design world as it is on the catwalks of Paris. Fashion is obviously a big part of Gabriela’s life. From her designer wardrobe to the Louis Vuitton bags and Van Cleef & Arpels candles in her room, she obviously has impeccable taste. Even her Persian cat, Figaro, is the perfect shade of grey to complement her curtains and carpets, as well as the Elle Morgan dress that she has changed into. Unfortunately, just like every good fairytale, our visit had to come to an end. All that was left was to bid Gabriela and her family farewell, and to hope that they all live happily ever after in their house by the sea.

The real heart of Gabriela’s house is the cosy living room that is connected to almost every other room in the house. A Buddha sitting in the fireplace, candles, incense and a chill out lounge soundtrack give this room a particularly Zen atmosphere. “In the summer, we spend most of our time outside; we turn the garden into another living area,” she says as she opens up the patio doors, which lead to a chic terrace. Gabriela also does much of her work outside in the garden. Her paintings are generally huge and take up far too much room inside the house, although if it is raining she often paints on the floor in the kitchen. TRÈS CHIC 65

Osteopath Hilary Maclise sheds some light on the mysteries behind yoga and the benefits of individual postures on your body YOGA is key to self-sufficient health! The first rule I learned about health in my studies of osteopathy was that the body´s structure and function are inter-related. This means that where the body structures are functioning well or in balance, then health is optimised. I have been an athlete most of my life and have accumulated injuries that sometimes accompany intense sports. I have old injuries that cause patterns and tendencies in certain areas of my body. When I went running, my left hip would always tighten up and result in sciatica. I have been big on running most of my life but I was unable to run for about 10 years until four years ago, when I began a regular Hatha Yoga practice. Thanks to a weekly practice, I am running again for the past three years pain-free and have a self-sufficient way to help keep it that way. The most important part of Hatha Yoga is to practice it regularly. This is when you will experience the benefits. There are basic poses that are common in all schools of Hatha Yoga that are easy to do and have great benefits for your health and well-being. Make sure you have comfortable and breathable clothing and a yoga mat. The mat makes it easier to fully extend the body into each posture and prevents you from sliding and possibly injuring yourself. And take off your socks until the end when you do a relaxation pose.

FAB ABS! Tone your tum for the sunwith tips from Sean McShea Having a body that you would be proud to show off on the beach is something a lot of people strive for. It gives them the extra motivation they need to train harder and to stick to a healthy diet. There is one thing you should try and do yourself, even if you aren’t planning a beach holiday and that is set yourself goals. If your goal is beach body abs, then you have a time frame to work to and know what you have to do. There are hundreds of muscles in the core of your body – the abdominals (all layers), lower and mid back, pelvic region, obliques and the popular “love handle” areas are loaded with muscles of all different sizes, shapes, lengths and angles, which require specific exercises to produce the desired training effect for optimal fitness and a hot looking midsection. A big mistake many people, even trainers, make is to mimic the abdominal routines of bodybuilders or power-lifters. The problem with that is most people are not bodybuilders or power-lifters – and these people tend to over-train anyway. The problems here range from a lot of wasted time to serious, long-term injuries. This happens every day to people who try to exercise without proper guidance and it’s one of the reasons why personal trainers are so busy these days! The proper workout must be designed to provide the most effective exercise training stimulus to the entire midsection, in the shortest amount of time

because we are all very busy people, right?), with minimal risk of injury. There are lots of core exercises out there, I recommend starting with just the basic types (plank, side plank etc) and developing your training from there, as your core strengthens. TRAINING ABS WITH MACHINES & HOME EQUIPMENT

Typically, any machine that involves gripping handles out to the side and in front for support isn’t ideal. Once you begin to get tired, your body will naturally have a tendency to use the arms grips to force the abdominal motion, taking the abs out of the picture almost completely and asking your back to do more work, which sets you up for an injury – the exact opposite of what you need in your situation. One piece of simple exercise equipment that I highly recommend you invest in is called a Swiss ball (also known as a stability ball). The Swiss ball is more versatile than any piece of infomercial ab equipment ever will be. It’s also safer and more effective. To achieve a “flat” toned stomach area, it is not necessary to use any weights or equipment, your own body weight is sufficient, unless you want the bulging body builder look. Results Remember, to achieve the best results from your ab and core training, cardio exercise and a good diet is extremely important, as you need to have a low body fat percentage.

As much as we love living “la vida loca” in Marbella, sometimes we just can’t take any more hedonism and need a break from it all. Our latest discovery, for those well-earned weekends away, is a boutique retreat that Tatler nominated as its most “Heavenly Hideaway” in 2010, and we couldn’t agree more. Hacienda de San Raphael is just a couple of hour’s drive from Marbella, tucked away in the countryside between two of our favourite cities: Seville and Jerez. As you drive through the peace and quiet of the rolling Andalusian landscape it feels as if you are a world away from the craziness of the Costa – you may also wonder more than once if your Satnav has gone haywire and is leading you astray, as you really do feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. Once you reach your destination, along a final, long and dusty track, the idyllic panorama continues – the views from the gleaming, white-washed hotel are stunning. With our love for all things “Chic”, this stylish 11-bedroom Hacienda positively ticks all our boxes in terms of décor and atmosphere. Chilling out is obligatory from the moment you walk through the door. A beautifully restored 18th century former olive farm, the hotel retains a rustic charm without skimping on any 21st century mod cons. As you look out over the gorgeous bougainvillea-lined courtyard from one of the 11 deluxe rooms, it’s easy to imagine yourself in a Zorro movie. Antonio Banderas certainly wouldn’t look out place galloping through the main gates on a black stallion. A stay at Hacienda de San Raphael

feels more like visiting the home of old friends rather than staying in a hotel, although the service is exemplary and extremely subtle – we loved the sprig of lavender on the pillows at night and the iced lemon tea we were served on arrival. The charming rooms are simple with the original wooden beams of the vaulted ceilings exposed in contrast with the crisp, white sheets on the beds. In keeping with the historic Hispanic ambience, the rooms are lovingly accessorised with antiques, furniture and paintings from the area – although the overall look is somehow fused with a hint of contemporary Asian style. Huge shuttered windows let the Spanish sun splash into the rooms and over the flagstone floors, giving a feeling of space and light. Hacienda de San Raphael actually is a family affair – which probably explains why a visit feels so personal. The farm, which was fully-operational up until the 1960s, has been in the Reid family for a century and a half. It is now run by the youngest generation of the family – two brothers –who have given it a fresh lease of life and turned it into an uber-cool, place-tobe for global jet setters. The brothers’ mum is Spanish – she comes from Jerez and always dreamed of turning the family farm into a guesthouse. Their British father used to work for Mandarin Oriental Hotel group. or two about hospitality – and it shows. There isn’t an international travel publication that hasn’t raved about the property, which is also on Condé Nast Traveller’s Gold List. It is not surprising the retreat has had such amazing reviews. Set in five acres, the hotel boasts beautiful gardens that are crammed with lemon trees, palm trees and bourgainvillea. It also offers guests the choice of three pools and various patio areas for just sitting outside and soaking up the Andalusian atmosphere. We would highly recommend checking into one of the three private “casitas”. Away from the main house, the thatched cottages offer even more peace and quiet, a private pool and an individual terrace. Nights sat under the pagoda looking up at

the Spanish night sky, sipping on Manzanilla and listening to live flamenco music couldn’t be more romantic. Hard as it is to drag yourself away from the idyllic surroundings of this perfect Spanish setting, don’t forget there are oodles of things to do in the vicinity. And if you are feeling too laid back to organise anything yourself; let the hotel do it for you. They are, after all, the experts and they can provide guides to cater to your every whim. A tour of the historic city of Seville? Sherry tasting in the bodegas of Jerez? Cooking classes in a nearby Spanish home? Not a problem! You name it and Hacienda de San Raphael can help. Nothing is too much trouble. A highlight of our visit was a morning ride on horseback out into the Andalusian countryside. The hotel’s chef and his team make a mean picnic, which we took along to enjoy al fresco under the forest canopy. Impressive as the picnic was, nothing could match the meals we ate in the hotel itself. From breakfast on the terrace outside our room, to dinner cooked with fresh, local ingredients – every bite was a delight. The next time we have a crazy week of events and deadlines down on the coast, we’ll be dreaming of these days relaxing under a palm tree at Hacienda de San Raphael and wishing to be whisked away by our own Spanish caballero! Main picture: The retreat is most romantic at night; Above: We love the simple but super chic interiors.

1. Trim the asparagus stalks, discarding the tough ends, then tie them in a bundle. Cook in a tall pan of boiling, salted water over a medium heat for seven-10 minutes. 2. Stir enough of the reserved cooking liquid to form a smooth paste then stir in the remaining liquid. Bring to the boil, stirring constantly, and cook over a low heat until the sauce thickens slightly. Stir in the sugar then remove the pan from the heat. Set the sauce aside until it cools slightly. 4. Beat the egg yolks with the lemon juice. Gradually stir the mixture into the cooled sauce. Cook over a very low heat, stirring constantly, until the sauce is fairly thick. Immediately remove the pan from the heat and continue stirring for one minute. 5. Taste the sauce and add the sugar or salt if needed. Let it cool slightly, then pour a little over the asparagus. Cover and chill for at least two hours before serving the rest of the sauce.

GREAT expectations

Dinner at Güey is way out of this world

Words by Daisy Omissi

We are always a little wary about eating in a restaurant that is the talk of the town. Usually our expectations are far too high and we are horribly disappointed. So it was with an element of trepidation that we sat down for dinner at Güey on a busy Friday night surrounded by Marbella’s movers and shakers. The big question on all our lips was, “Is this just the latest trendy joint that will attract the crowds until they get bored and move onto the next big thing?” Call us cynical, but we have seen so many “it” places come and go along the coast that we have become a little jaded. Opened in Dec 2010, Güey (pronounced “Way”) is three months into its new life and its popularity is still growing – we had to sweat blood and tears to get a table on a Friday night, and when we arrived the restaurant was visibly bursting at the seams. A calm and collected waiter – who didn’t seem at all flustered by the fact he had another four diners to add to his list – showed us to our table. He talked us through the eclectic menu, which is one of the most interesting and diverse we have seen for a while. As the owners of the restaurant come from Mexico, there are a few Mexican dishes, such as ceviche and tacos, mixed in with a selection of otherwise mainly Mediterranean options. An unexpected twist to the menu is a wide selection of sushi, which goes to show that the restaurant isn’t afraid to shake things up a little and do things their own way. It is

this confidence that has given the restaurant the “cojones” to take the lead and quickly become one of the most popular places to eat out on the coast. Sat at a great table near the front of the restaurant, we soon got sucked into the buzzing atmosphere of Güey. We were in a fantastic spot for watching people come and go, celebrate birthdays and enjoy the live entertainment. The focus of the contemporary restaurant is really its long bar and wall of tequilas – there are 103 different types for tequila aficionados to taste, if they are feeling brave. In keeping with the subtle hints of Mexico, a sign on the wall announces, “Hecho en Mexico” and above our table is a painting of Mexico City. Even our waitress is Mexican, but don’t expect to find any tacky cactus or mariachis at Güey, it is super stylish and as cutting-edge cool as restaurants come. Having savoured Güey’s ambiance and décor it was time to try the food. Stand out starters were the Foie Gras soup, which was creamy and perfected with a drizzle of truffle oil on top, and a light, crisp plate of super-fresh Ceviche. A typical starter for the area, Pil Pil Prawns, was given the Güey treatment and served in whisky or tequila, which we also loved. For mains we couldn’t get enough of the rack of lamb, which was incredibly tender, full of flavour and dripping in an amazing lamb jus. It’s no wonder this is a house specialty. Instead of the thin-sliced tuna steaks that are normally served in restaurants, Güey’s chefs sent out huge chunks of tuna cooked exactly as we requested it – medium rare. The chips were equally chunky and went down a treat. Before dessert was served, the ladies in our group were presented with white roses embossed with the Güey logo – a nice touch, especially as they were presented by the restaurant manager Johnnie Gomez. The success of the restaurant is in no small part down to Johnnie, who has given the place his magic touch and continues to weave his spell on all who meet him. Unfortunately for Johnnie, his limelight was stolen by the arrival of two irresistible looking desserts. What girl can resist the charm of a home-made chocolate cake and a chocolate and truffle torte with Bailey’s and Chantilly cream? Sorry Johnnie, it was nothing personal! Washing dinner down with a final glass of fiery Mexican Coffee (think Irish coffee with Kahlua instead of Whiskey), we came to the conclusion that Güey is definitely here to stay. If you can make time for yourself every day even a relaxing bath with essential oils and putting on soothing music would be beneficial and will put the body into a healing state. If you would like to contact me I will send a meditation/relaxation technique to you. Hello everyone, Welcome to my new column I hope it will help you to relate to troubles you too may have in your life and assist you in resolving them.

Dear Sharon, I have been experiencing frequent panic attacks for the past few months and now they are getting out of control. I feel completely washed out from them both mentally and physically. Can you please help me to deal with them? Eleanor, Mijas. Dear Eleanor, Firstly it is important not to fight against it, the same as one does when a car goes into a skid, you go with it; this allows the body to recover quicker. Secondly take in three deep breaths and let them

Dear Sharon, I have been with my boyfriend for three years now but he refuses to make any form of commitment to me although I do everything I can to please him he often breaks dates at the last minute, how can I turn this around? Claudia, Malaga Dear Claudia, The problem is by making yourself always available to him and constantly wanting to please him not only boosts his ego but gives him the upper hand. Now it is time for him to show you some respect. Next time he wants to see you tell him that you are busy and

can’t change your plans the same way as if you had a date with him, you wouldn’t let him down. Then tell him you have to go because you are busy and will speak to him later. He will soon wonder where you are going and who with and he will be racing to your office with a big bunch of flowers declaring his undying love.

Dear Sharon, My family moved to Spain six months ago from England and I am finding it very difficult to settle here and make new friends is there anything you can suggest? Deborah Fuengirola Dear Deborah, I know it is hard leaving behind your friends and settling into a new country and culture. If you look on-line there are many websites about the Costa del Sol listing what’s on in your area and a list of dance classes, gyms and social event etc where you will meet women, to both socialise and exercise with. There are also Networking Groups in your area that promote new businesses and are very supportive. Having new friends to socialise with will help you to integrate here.

Dear Sharon, My mother is driving me mad, she is recently divorced and has become very clingy and tearful, I don’t want to appear mean but I don’t know how to help her? Frankie Estepona Dear Frankie, You are obviously used to her being the supportive one and not the other way around. Divorce is a very scary time especially after being married for 25 years. Encourage her to go to social events and go with her the first time so she doesn’t feel like she is on her own. Also arrange a girly mum and daughter evening on a regular basis, such as beauty night, romcom and popcorn or just a heart to heart chat. It will make her feel normal again, and will be a stepping stone to getting her life back on track and rebuilding her confidence, and you will feel like you have made a contribution to her well being.

Dandy Warhol Check out Andy Warhol in these one-of-a-kind portraits, which are available right here in Marbella This is Andy Warhol as you have never seen him before. The collection of 20 digital pigment prints of Andy posing as his favourite divas have become absolute collectors’ items. The ANDYDANDY collection combines images from photographer Makos’ “Altered Image” portraits of Andy with flower images from photographer Solberg’s “Bloom” series. In the shots Warhol slightly altered his appearance with make-up and a wig, otherwise remaining in his street clothes. It was all the outward change Warhol felt he needed. Andy said, “I’m not trying to look beautiful like Elizabeth Taylor, I’m trying to show what it feels like to be beautiful like Elizabeth Taylor.” Andy wasn’t the kind of dandy to wear a flower in his lapel, but as ANDYDANDY demonstrates, sometimes by just altering the image of one’s work or oneself, a new beauty blooms. Jessy J, Justin Bieber and JLo, we are seeing even the most hardened FASHIONISTA going Hollywood glam, our in house reporter Ashton Easter has all the CELEBRITY GOSSIP Jessie J

She first hit our radio waves with her single Do it Like a Dude, and has since been dominating the music charts with her killer vocals and weird and wonderful performances. I became a huge fan when I heard Jessie on the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge singing her hit song Price Tag, and she was crazy good. I haven’t been able to stop listening to her music and watching her live performances on youtube videos. She is amazing. It’s so good to hear someone who can sing even better live than on her records. It’s rare nowadays and I love it! I think she has just started what’s going to be an incredible career. Need to know: Her real name is Jessica Ellen Cornish. She is just 22 years old. Bieber Fever has become a known medical condition for sometime now and I have taken medication but still it doesn’t seem to go away. Most people over the age of 17 years old instantly dismiss this teen star, but I have taken the time to research and listen to a potential world-wide superstar and at just 17 years old he is very close to becoming just that. Celebrity Couples HOT or NOT When it comes to love I am a hopeless romantic so I am always rooting for people’s relationships to last, but in Hollywood it seems that love is a battlefield. has he gone insane?

Where to start? Charlie Sheen was known for his movie career, his role in his hit sitcom Two and a Half Men and his partying ways, but now it seems that the focus is on his mental state. Is he acting or has he gone insane? My theory is that he is sober for the first time in years and his body has gone into shock causing him to go a bit crazy. Just look at his eyes and the way he talks when being interviewed, it’s like he is on another planet. Charlie began his train wreck when making bold and rather crazy statements on radio shows, calling in and telling people that it’s ok to do drugs and insulting the creator of his hit show Two and a Half Men. Next he was taken to hospital after a night filled with prostitutes, drugs and alcohol. Charlie then wanted to prove his sanity and sobriety by doing an interview with Good Morning America. He was extremely candid and made no excuses for his behavior, only calling his craziness “passion” and the drug he was on “The Charlie Sheen Drug”. He also took a drug test which was clean! This can only mean he has just gone slightly mad. When asked if he was bipolar, he said, “no just BI-WINNING!” This has now become a famous slogan that is being plastered over Twitter, websites and t-shirts simply saying “I’m Winning”. When confronted with the question, “When was the last time you used,” he said, “I use a blender, a hoover…” He claims he is clean

and that he survived the entire drug taking because, “I am me, I am different, I have tiger blood!” This is where the whole tiger blood phenomenon started! What is tiger blood?! I am still unable to fully understand and answer that question. He says he was proud of his partying as he exposed people to magic and gave them memories that would last forever. Also since this whole crazy train started, Charlie has got divorced and become a potential Hugh Hefner, as he lives with his two new girlfriends – an ex-porn star and a nanny. Dubbed by Charlie as his “Goddesses”, both these girls have now made names for themselves. Both claim to love Charlie, and Charlie states they are the loves of his life. What is that all about? Nuts! In the midst of all his crazy behaviour, Charlie was fired from his hit TV show Two and Half Men and he isn’t taking it lightly – he is trying to sue them for over US$100 million dollars. He has now taken to creating his own gigs, which include a new live-streaming talk show Sheen’s Korner on uStream, and is planning a live stage tour called the My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat Is Not an Option Show, which is already sold out. Sheen is also taking this opportunity to make more money with Twitter, merchandise and by launching his own official website www.charliesheen.com. While the website’s content is currently limited, fans are able to buy Charlie Sheen t-shirts with slogans including “That’s what winners do”, and “You’re either in Sheen’s Korner or you’re with the trolls”. After the website officially launched, Sheen posted on his Twitter page, “After years of being at the mercy of a decaying troll, charliesheen.com is finally in the hands of its Warlock owner!” Are those the word of a sane man? With the newspapers, internet, magazines, TV shows and radio going mad for Charlie Sheen, it looks like this crazy train will be taking lots of twists and turns.

Other than Tweeting, celebrities are also showing their support in other ways. Lady Gaga has put on sale a self-designed bracelet intended to raise funds for the victims of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. She announced her commitment to helping the devastated country via Twitter and a blog post on her official website. The statement read, “Lady GaGa designed a ‘We Pray For Japan’ bracelet, buy yours now for US$5 in the web store and all proceeds go to Japan tsunami relief.” Fans can also add a donation of up to US$100 with their purchase of GaGa’s wristband. Charlie Sheen has also announced that he will donate a portion of the profits from his live stage shows to victims of the natural disasters in Japan. Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park has designed a t-shirt to benefit Music for Relief’s Tsunami Relief in Japan. Rapper P. Diddy, talk show host Conan O’Brien and R&B singer Chris Brown implored their Twitter followers to help the victims of the disaster and Miss Katy Perry Tweeted: Imagine if we ALL texted REDCROSS to 90999 we’d have raised over 60million dollars for JAPAN REFLIEF! BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE! BE! Katy Perry is also donating proceeds from the sales of light wands at her European concerts to the Red Cross. Teen stars have also pulled together to help: Demi Lovato has apparently donated US$50 million dollars to the Japan recovery effort along with Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers, Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber, and Taylor Swift who also stepped up to provide assistance, with sources saying Taylor donated close to US$100 million. The amounts donated by the other named celebs are unknown at this time. It’s nice to see them doing something good with their money and fame by raising awareness and encouraging donations following this devastating disaster.

Celebrities share and spread their love and support for Japan The events that unfolded in Japan last month were truly tragic and my thoughts go out to all involved. Despite some people thinking certain celebrities aren’t human-beings, it’s times like this when they show that they do care about things other than themselves. It’s also a time when celebrities take to their Twitter accounts to tweet away their love and support. Meanwhile, Hilton’s mother Kathy has given her sign of approval, stating that she would never “pressure” Paris into marrying Waits, but she believes Paris would be an “incredible” parent and sees babies and a wedding in the future. Hilton previously confirmed that she would like to have “three or four” children before turning 40. Do you think she would make them all wear pink?

“When I was growing up I felt a complete freak. Very strange, I felt weird at five. At the age of 12, it was me against the world.”

Paris Hilton feeling Broody? Paris has managed to stay out of the headlines, rehab and jail recently, so this headline is no surprise. After turning 30 last year, and dating her

Who has taken the crown as king of Facebook? Who would you guess is the most popular person on Facebook? No it isn’t Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga! It’s rapper Eminem! He has reportedly taken over the late Michael Jackson as Facebook’s most popular person. The rapper had previously beaten Lady GaGa as the world’s most popular living person in February, and has now gathered more followers than Jackson to take pole position. Eminem has surpassed 30 million “likes” on Facebook, while Jackson is in second place with 29.8 million “likes”. However, on Twitter, Lady GaGa is the most popular musician with 8.7 million followers, while Eminem is just inside the list of top 20 artists. I bet this was better than winning his Grammys! TRÈS CHIC Movies

Some popcorn please!

There are some great films coming out on DVD this month, says Natasha Lutz, so many in fact that she found it difficult to choose just three, but here it goes... TITLE: Burlesque GENRE: Musical/Drama/Romance

Two divas, one stage, kinda scary but here’s the story. We have our wide-eyed blonde girl from Hicksville, also known as Ali (Christina Aguilera) who leaves home and ventures into the big city, LA. She stumbles upon a Burlesque club in Sunset Boulevard, and is immediately dazzled and intrigued when she sees Tess (Cher) performing onstage. Stubborn and resourceful she finds herself a job as a cocktail waitress in that very club and begins to hound Tess for an on-stage role. It doesn’t take very long for the whole club to hear the pipes on this petite blonde. Suddenly she’s in the limelight and the club’s very existence rides on her performances. I’ll be honest with you the critics have been ruthless when comes to Cher’s expressionless face and Christina’s lack of acting ability, however, many have said that its cliché-filled moments, and over-the-top everything actually make this a fun movie to watch. So what the hell? I’m all for two hours of glitter, eyelashes, extensions, super vocals and some backstage bitching, enjoy ladies!

TITLE: Paranormal Activity GENRE: Horror/Thriller

This is not the American sequel to Paranormal Activity but the Japanese sequel version. Following on from the Oren Peli original, it tells the story of a Japanese girl called Haruka (Noriko Aoyama) who visits San Diego, and returns home to Tokyo with an evil force in tow. Soon after her arrival, strange and inexplicable things begin to occur. Encouraged by her brother Koichi (Aoi Nakamura) she lets 106 TRÈS CHIC

him set up a video camera to capture the events on film. Cue: screams of horror. Seriously though, is it just me or are Japanese horror films way scarier than the American versions? I have a love/hate relationship with horror movies; I love watching them, but hate the fact that I need to turn on every single light in my apartment, and get my boyfriend to check under the bed. This film looks so freaky and just so “arghhhh!!!” that my electricity bill might benefit if I don’t watch it, but who am I kidding? I’m so going to watch it!

TITLE: Little Fockers GENRE: Comedy

The sequel to Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers, in the third film of this franchise Greg (Ben Stiller) and Pam (Teri Polo) are parents to twins. Greg still needs to deal with Pam’s suspicious father who this time round suspects him of cheating on his daughter with a sexy drug saleswoman (Jessica Alba). Of course, we see Greg’s parents, played by Barbra Streisand and Dustin Hoffmann, return for his kid’s birthday. Adding to this already star-studded cast, Owen Wilson makes an appearance as Pam’s obsessive ex-boyfriend and sports a lovely tattoo of her face on his back. I liked the first and second film, and this one promises to be just as light-hearted and fun. Kick back, relax and enjoy!

Thank you for photographing our wedding so beautifully, you captured the spirt, love and emotion of the day. Luke & Sarah
