L

ate in his life, Thomas Jefferson envisioned vineyards and wines from his native state standing shoulder to shoulder with the great wines of the Old World. He planted his vineyards close to his home, atop Monticello mountain located adjacent to the small hamlet of Charlottesville, that year, but his efforts were in vain, and his vision remained unfulfilled. Some 200 years later, the counties surrounding Monticello were designated the Monticello Viticultural Area (AVA), in recognition of the region’s distinguished and burgeoning wine industry. Over half of Virginia’s 2000 vineyard acres grow within the Monticello AVA, and well over 20 wineries produce fine wines of national and international acclaim. Today, the Commonwealth of Virginia is the 5th largest producer of wine in the United States, with

the Monticello Wine Trail as its crown-jewel, truly fulfilling Jefferson’s vision of winemaking in Virginia. In no place are Jefferson’s vision and legacy more pronounced than at Monticello, his stunning mountain-top home and America’s only site listed on the World Register of Historic Places. A visit to Monticello remains a touchstone of American culture, a rite of passage for all who seek to understand from whence this country came, and an immersion into the greatest of American minds. The Monticello Wine Trail remains the wine world’s best kept secret, where boutique wineries produce small quantities of high-quality wines, shared with family, friends and visitors. With this in mind, we invite you to Discover the Birthplace of American Wine. Courtesy of Monticello Wine Trail

Complimentary Trolley from UVA to Downtown

Charlottesville’s historic areas begin with Thomas Jefferson’s University of Virginia and the Rotunda. University Avenue, “The Corner,” with its specialty shops, dining spots, and entertainment venues, is a fun way to begin a short walk through history. Continue your journey from University Avenue to West Main Street, then on to the historic Downtown Mall, noticing a variety of shops, hotels, and restaurants along the way. Main Street becomes a pedestrian mall at the Omni Hotel. Many businesses offer validation for the parking garages on Market and Water Streets. A free trolley is available to connect all three areas, and makes frequent stops along the way.

After the war it became Union occupied as a Freedmen’s Bureau. Come visit the newly renovated Museum and experience rooms lined with Civil War medical instruments, field supplies, original documents and much more. New exhibits display the

Charlottesville GUIDE

Spend a Day On Monticello Mountain During your stay in Charlottesville, make sure a journey up Monticello Mountain is on your itinerary with visits at area attractions and memorable stops along the way. You may want to purchase a Neighborhood Pass ahead of time, which offers a combination discounted ticket for touring the historic rural inn Michie Tavern, Monticello, and Ash Lawn-Highland, all located within minutes of one another. The Pass may be purchased at any of those locations. Before your tour of Monticello, you may want to take a walk on The Thomas Jefferson Parkway, developed to create a scenic entrance along Route 53 to Monticello. It has easy access and free parking. At the base of the Parkway along Route 53, Kemper Park includes an arboretum of native trees and shrubs, Carter Overlook, a two-acre pond, and a small trailhead parking lot. A 2-mile trail, Saunders-Monticello Trail, also winds through the park before ascending the side of Carter Mountain toward Monticello. The trail then leads directly to the Monticello ticket office over the stone-arch Saunders Bridge. A pedestrian underpass at the lower trailhead that leads to additional parking constitutes the final piece of the project. From Monticello, just half a mile to the right on Rt. 53, is historic Michie Tavern. You can enjoy a fine, Southern lunch and a visit to their charming country store. You’ll pass right by Jefferson Vineyards (for later in the day) on the way to James Monroe’s home, Ash Lawn-Highland, noted for the beautiful home, outbuildings, gardens, and outdoor Summer Theater. Both Jefferson Vineyards and Kluge Estate Winery and Farm Store are certainly “must” stops for wine tasting and enjoying the spirit of the area. You’ll experience award-winning wines in beautiful settings at each winery. Finally, you might want to leave just enough time to meander through mountaintop orchards with panoramic views of Charlottesville at Carter Mountain Orchards, located just below Michie Tavern on Rt. 53. The kids will love picking apples in October and November. This special journey might be the perfect compliment to your stay at an Inn or B&B.

amed in honor of Princess Charlotte, the wife of George III, Charlottesville was settled in the 18th century on a hill overlooking the Rivanna River. Today, the City of Charlottesville and the surrounding Albemarle County has a metropolitan population nearing 200,000 encompassing over 730 square miles of scenic and beautiful landscape. Charlottesville and Albemarle County offer a unique combination of natural beauty, a climate with four distinct seasons, rich historical and cultural attractions, and close proximity to both a national park and the nation’s capitol. The area consistently earns high marks as a desirable place to live; in recent years, it has appeared on top-ten lists of cities published by Money, Forbes, Kiplinger’s, and Men’s Health magazines as well as AARP and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Featuring the amenities of larger cities, Charlottesville is a vibrant university town that offer numerous outdoor recreational activities, organizations for senior citizens, fitness facilities, excellent private and public schools, indoor and outdoor shopping areas, indoor and outdoor entertainment venues, and residential communities that have developed through the years. These are just a few of the reasons why people choose to make Charlottesville and Albemarle County their home.
