Charlottesville GUIDE
Monticello wine trail
L
ate in his life, Thomas Jefferson envisioned vineyards and wines from his native state standing shoulder to shoulder with the great wines of the Old World. He planted his vineyards close to his home, atop Monticello mountain located adjacent to the small hamlet of Charlottesville, that year, but his efforts were in vain, and his vision remained unfulfilled. Some 200 years later, the counties surrounding Monticello were designated the Monticello Viticultural Area (AVA), in recognition of the region’s distinguished and burgeoning wine industry. Over half of Virginia’s 2000 vineyard acres grow within the Monticello AVA, and well over 20 wineries produce fine wines of national and international acclaim. Today, the Commonwealth of Virginia is the 5th largest producer of wine in the United States, with

the Monticello Wine Trail as its crown-jewel, truly fulfilling Jefferson’s vision of winemaking in Virginia. In no place are Jefferson’s vision and legacy more pronounced – than at Monticello, his stunning mountain-top home and America’s only site listed on the World Register of Historic Places. A visit to Monticello remains a touchstone of American culture, a rite of passage for all who seek to understand from whence this country came, and an immersion into the greatest of American minds. The Monticello Wine Trail remains the wine world’s best kept secret, where boutique wineries produce small quantities of high-quality wines, shared with family, friends and visitors. With this in mind, we invite you to Discover the Birthplace of American Wine. Courtesy of Monticello Wine Trail

M3 Visitors to Charlottesville will quickly see that its historic areas begin with Thomas Jefferson’s University of Virginia and the Rotunda (on the opposite side of the Downtown Charlottesville map). University Avenue, “The Corner,” M1 with its specialty shops, dining spots, and entertainment venues, is a fun way to begin a short walk through history. University Avenue leads directly to West Main Street and Midtown. Amtrak travelers arrive in Midtown and can easily walk in either direction to the University area or to the historic Downtown Mall, noticing a variety of shops, hotels, and restaurants along the way in Midtown. Main Street becomes a pedestrian mall at the Omni Hotel. Many businesses offer validation for the parking garages on Market and Water Streets, so be sure to ask. A free trolley is available to connect all three areas, and makes frequent stops along the way.

harlottesville and Albemarle County, tucked into the foothills of Central Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, are among the most desirable locations in the country. The area was home to three Founding Fathers and US Presidents—Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe—and their homes, Monticello, Montpelier, and Ash-Lawn Highland, are all open to visitors. The Presidents’ Pass combination discount ticket offers discounted admission to Presidential Homes (Monticello, Montpelier, Ash Lawn Highland and Woodrow Wilson in Staunton), as well as to Michie Tavern, a historic 18th century tavern. Charlottesville is also home to Thomas Jefferson’s University of Virginia, founded in 1819 and consistently ranked among the nation’s top public universities. The Charlottesville/Albemarle area truly has something for everyone. Adjacent to Historic Court Square is the Downtown Mall, a charming pedestrian mall filled with unique shops and distinctive restaurants and home to the Paramount Theater and the nTelos Wireless Pavilion, both highly rated music and entertainment venues. Another top rated venue, the 16,000-seat John Paul Jones Arena is home to the UVA Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams and a wide variety of concerts, family entertainment, and community events. The area has a vibrant arts scene and rich cultural history, showcased in a selection of first-rate museums, galleries, parks, and more. The area’s beautiful landscape, dotted with family farms, orchards, and award-winning vineyards, is just a short drive from the Blue Ridge Parkway, one of America’s most visited parks, and Shenandoah National Park via the Skyline Drive.

amed in honor of Princess Charlotte, the wife of George III, Charlottesville was settled in the 18th century on a hill overlooking the Rivanna River. Today, the City of Charlottesville and the surrounding Albemarle County has a metropolitan population nearing 200,000 encompassing over 730 square miles of scenic and beautiful landscape. Charlottesville and Albemarle County offer a unique combination of natural beauty, a climate with four distinct seasons, rich historical and cultural attractions, and close proximity to both a national park and the nation’s capitol. The area consistently earns high marks as a desirable place to live; in recent years, it has appeared on top-ten lists of cities published by Money, Forbes, Kiplinger’s, and Men’s Health magazines as well as AARP and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Featuring the amenities of larger cities, Charlottesville is a vibrant university town that offer numerous outdoor recreational activities, organizations for senior citizens, fitness facilities, excellent private and public schools, indoor and outdoor shopping areas, indoor and outdoor entertainment venues, and residential communities that have developed through the years. These are just a few of the reasons why people choose to make Charlottesville and Albemarle County their home.
