MODERN FRENCH CUISINE Both the menu and the atmosphere embrace the savoir vivre of great food, amazing ambience and good friends.

“Tempo is the underlying beat that stays the same no matter the culture from which it comes, and it is in this vein that the carefully thought-out menu and wine list pay tribute to a dynamic mix of bright and international influences, while still being anchored in the tried-and-true art of French culinary tradition.

The Corner In the early 1900’s, this district literally was a corner, situated at the entrance to the University. Today, The Corner’s mix of history and modern nightlife makes it a must-see area of Charlottesville. Restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and retail outlets offer plenty to explore either before or after a rewarding visit to The Rotunda and Grounds.

A GUIDE FOR PARKING AT THE CORNER Many Corner-first timers gravitate towards the most obvious garage, next to the Biltmore on Elliewood. However, parking in this garage is overseen by a local towing company. If you choose to park here, make sure to have exact change (parking is less expensive if customers pay in cash, but the machines don’t offer any change) and to follow display directions on the ticket exactly. If you feel your vehicle has been towed unfairly, place a call to the police non-emergency number- CPD are very helpful. Do not park at the Bank of Americathe bank gets a lot of traffic and works diligently to keep spots open for customers. As a result, parking enforcement in their lot is strict. A much better option for parking is the open-air lot behind Ragged Mountain Running and the Virginian/Eddy’s bar block. (Turn in at the green and white sign for “Parking” after passing College Inn, coming from Rugby Rd, or after passing Little John’s, coming from 14th.) This lot has an attendant and is a pay-upon-exit option, so visitors don’t have to worry about how much time is left on their ticket while they’re trying to enjoy their evenings. This is also the least expensive option on the Corner. There’s also a lot on Wertland and 14th, which is covered, but pricier. However, it’s a better option for those who want to grab a slice at Mellow Mushroom or a cocktail from Cafe Caturra before heading down West Main to Midtown, or returning Alums who want to visit their mugs at St. Maarten. There are limited street parking areas up and down the Corner, with a row of metered spaces across from Mellow Mushroom and a few 15 minute spaces on every block. If a short walk isn’t out of the question, most UVA parking lots are free and open to the public after 5, M-F, and all day on weekends, as long as there isn’t a sporting event. UVA lots are clearly marked (look for white and gray signs at the entrance to lots, and blue lettered signs within lots) and are a great way to combine a walk up the Lawn with a visit to the corner. The lot at Bice on Brandon Avenue has ample parking and lends itself well to walking through the East Range- just park, and walk straight up Brandon onto grounds, and then straight through.

harlottesville and Albemarle County, tucked into the foothills of Central Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, are among the most desirable locations in the country. The area was home to three Founding Fathers and US Presidents— Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe—and their homes, Monticello, Montpelier, and Highland, are all open to visitors. The Presidents’ Pass combination discount ticket offers discounted admission to Presidential Homes (Monticello, Montpelier, Highland, and Woodrow Wilson in Staunton), as well as to Michie Tavern, a historic 18th century tavern. Charlottesville is also home to Thomas Jefferson’s University of Virginia, founded in 1819 and consistently ranked among the nation’s top public universities. The Charlottesville/Albemarle area truly has something for everyone. Adjacent to Historic Court Square is the Downtown Mall, a charming pedestrian mall filled with unique shops and distinctive restaurants and home to the Paramount Theater and the Sprint Wireless Pavilion, both highly rated music and entertainment venues. Another top rated venue, the 14,593seat John Paul Jones Arena, is home to the UVA Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams and a wide variety of concerts, family entertainment, and community events. The area has a vibrant arts scene and rich cultural history, showcased in a selection of first-rate museums, galleries, parks, and more. The area’s beautiful landscape, dotted with family farms, orchards, and award-winning vineyards, is just a short drive from the Blue Ridge Parkway, one of America’s most popular parks, and Shenandoah National Park via the Skyline Drive.

JUST LIKE JEFFERSON (Copy courtesy of VisitCharlottesville)

Monticello is the only home in America recognized by the United Nations as a World Heritage Site, and it holds this distinction for good reason. Thomas Jefferson spent more than forty years designing and redesigning the home and furnishings, and cultivating plants ranging from the wild to the exotic in the expansive gardens, which include a fruit orchard, 1,000 ft. terraced vegetable garden, and a floral garden of ornamental and functional blossoms. Guided tours of the house are offered daily throughout the year; outdoor gardens and plantation tours are offered daily April-October. Michie Tavern, located ½ mile below Monticello, accommodated travelers in the traditional Tavern style more than 200 years ago. Today, visitors to Michie can get a taste of 18th-century tavern life. Servers in the rustic tavern don period attire and present patrons with a dining experience rich in southern culture and hospitality. The menu features a buffet of southern fried chicken, marinated baked chicken, hickory-smoked pork barbecue, stewed tomatoes, black-eyed peas, buttermilk biscuits and so much more. Guests may further savor the past through a self-guided exploration of “Old Michie’s Tavern.” The tour explores the experiences of 18th century travelers through interpretations on drinking, gaming, dining, sleeping and entertainment. After a leisurely lunch and tour, guests may enjoy relaxed shopping in four specialty shops housed in distinct historic structures. The Tavern-Museum Shop, The Metal Smith Shop, The Armory & Artifact Shop and The General Store each provide a one-of-a-kind shopping experience. Michie Tavern is open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Midday Fare is offered 11:30 to 3:00. Continuous tours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Take a leaf out of TJ’s book and visit Highland, the property of James Monroe, 5th president of the United States. Monroe’s estate is adjacent to Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, and the locations of the two president’s homes are anything but random. Jefferson encouraged Monroe to purchase the plot in order to “form a society to [their] tastes.” The rest, as you’ll see, is history.

Self-guided Walking Tour of Historic Downtown

1. C&O Train Station (1905) (600 Water St) This elegant building was the passenger and freight station for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad (C&O)—running east to west across Virginia. It first reached Charlottesville in 1850. Confederate General Stone-Wall Jackson passed through the city by train during the Civil War. 2. King Grocery Supply (1897) (410 E Water St) By 1915, King’s carried all the wholesale grocery products by horse and wagon to supply neighborhood stores. Rural orders were shipped by train to an outlying merchant. King’s grocery supply was open until 1979. 3. Timberlake’s Drug Store (1896) (322 E Main St) This drug store has been in this location since 1917. The building was constructed as a branch of the People’s National Bank. The soda fountain in the rear of the store still offers old-fashioned ammonia cake. 4. Paramount Theater (1931) (215 E Main St) The Paramount was built as a “movie palace” with a renaissance façade that could be a back drop for a film set in Italy. The theater has a separate entrance on Third Street, which was the entrance for African-American patrons prior to desegregation. In 2004, after undergoing a restoration, the building was re-opened as a venue for live performances and movies. 5. Three-Notch’d Road (Central Place Fountain) Below the pedestrian mall lies the road originally known as Three-Chopt Road. It began in the 1730’s as the first major east-west route from Richmond to the Shenandoah Valley. The name comes from the trees cut with three notches that marked the route, represented at this fountain by the three concrete “trees” cut at different heights. 6. Oldest buildings on the Mall (1843) (114 & 118 E Main) These two adjoining buildings are amongst the oldest on the mall. Both were built by businessman Jesse W. Jones and have housed numerous commercial enterprises. 118 hosted Sterling and Wood jewelry store in 1871. The built-in vault still remains today.

7. Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society (1919) (200 2nd NE) Located in the former McIntire Public Library built in 1919. It houses an outstanding geneology and local history collection. Open to the public. 8. Charlottesville’s Oldest Homes (c.1808,1830) (410 E Jefferson) 410 E Jefferson is the oldest residential home on this tour. Portions were built in 1785 by Edward Butler, a signer of the 1779 Albemarle Declaration during the American Revolution. Adjacent buildings date from the 1820’s on. 9. Albemarle County Courthouse (1803, c.1859, c.1870s, 1938) The first courthouse was a wooden building, replaced in 1803 by this brick structure. Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe attended meetings here during this period. The courtroom has been in continuous use for more than 200 years. As with other county courthouses of the period, the grounds originally featured a whipping post, stocks, and pillory for public punishment. 10. Number “Nothing” (1820s) and 6th St Buildings (1820s-1860s) This neoclassical structure with its pediment and fine proportions shows how Jefferson’s design for UVA filtered into local building practice. With surrounding buildings already numbered, the duplex acquired the unusual address of “0” Court Square. Auctions of goods and slaves were held adjacent to Number Nothing on the courthouse steps during the early nineteenth century. 11. County Jail (1876) (409 E High) This jail was located slightly beyond court square to distance prisoners from the rest of the population. The last public hanging—that of J. Samuel McCue, the mayor who was convicted of murdering his wife—took place here in 1904 The structure was in use as a jail until 1974. Courtesy of the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society

TRAILS AND BOARDWALK

Photo by abi.bhattachan, Fearless Goose, Monticello Trail, Virginia

The Saunders-Monticello Trail currently stretches 2 miles along the south side of the Thomas Jefferson Parkway (Rt. 53) and across Saunders Bridge to the Thomas Jefferson Visitor Center and Smith History Center. Comprised partly of on-grade sections made of finely crushed, packed stone and and partly of raised boardwalk, the trail is open to pedestrians, cyclists, and to those in wheelchairs. With a maximum grade of five percent, the trail is completely accessible as it climbs steadily from the trailhead parking lot to a point just across the road from the entrance to Monticello. The newly constructed Saunders Bridge is now open to vehicles, pedestrians, bicyclists, and wheelchairs, allowing all visitors to cross safely onto the Monticello grounds. Both the trail and the bridge are named in grateful recognition of a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Saunders III. Mr. Saunders is a former chairman of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation’s Board of Trustees. As it winds its way up the side of a steep mountain (Carter Mountain), the trail offers dramatic scenery of towering, native hardwood forest, deep ravines and panoramas of the Piedmont and Blue Ridge Mountains. The design of the trail was inspired, in part, by Thomas Jefferson’s description of how he wished to present the spectacular views from Monticello: “Of prospect I have a rich profusion...it may be successively offered, & in different portions through vistas...with the advantage of shifting the scenes as you advance on your way.” In addition to the Saunders-Monticello Trail, Parkway users can enjoy further trails through parts of Secluded Farm, a 100-acre property to the south of Kemper Park.

SCENIC ORANGE COUNTY

cenic Orange County offers history, wine, true Virginia BBQ, and a healthy dose of adrenaline for the thrill-seekers among us. The county is home to two aviation areas, Skydive Orange and the Orange County Airport, which allows public access- it’s not uncommon for divers to fly to the airport and then jump with the experienced staff at Skydive Orange. Consider hopping up on a horse for a guided trail ride at Indian Trace Trail Rides, or traveling on horseback down one of the trails that Thomas Jefferson and James Madison themselves used centuries ago at Oakland Heights Farm. Oakland Heights also offers authentic bull-riding rodeo shows every month between May and September. For non-equestrian adrenaline, check out the Rapidan River Kayak Company, located on the scenic Rapidan River. The company offers small group instruction and tours on the Rapidan, as well as on local rivers and lakes. Boats, paddles, and safety gear are provided, and instructors are certified by the American Canoe Association. For visitors that prefer paintball to paddling, WarPlay Paintball offers a tactical battlefield paintball experience. Designed by two Marine veterans who have played paintball since the ‘80’s, WarPlay is anything but your standard paintball experience. Their new laser tag option incorporates military grade laser guns capable of hitting targets at 1,000 feet, electronic

ammo boxes, remote “bombs,” motion sensor mines, and a gameplay experience like no other. Paintball play is available every weekend, rain or shine, and welcomes walk-ons; the laser course requires reservations. The Liberty Mills Farm Corn Maze offers a more erudite approach to strategy. Test your map skills, sense of direction, and work as a group to answer trivia questions and collect punches throughout the largest Corn Maze in Central Virginia. The 25 acre field offers eight miles of maze trails with four different completion options, all based around their yearly theme- this year, the Alice in Wonderland theme promises a colorful adventure for all ages. Liberty Mills Farm also invites visitors to pick their own strawberries or pumpkins. Orange is home to a number of pick-yourown farms. Berry picking experiences include Gold Hill Blueberry farm, a pesticide-free family farm established in 1847, which offers sweet, sun-ripened “U-Pick” blueberries, as well as pre-picked raspberries, and Miller Farms Market, which proffers pick-your-own strawberries and seasonal farm-fresh produce, as well as fresh local honey. If you’re looking to harvest with a view, check out The Market at Grelen, a destination Farm Market, Garden Shop & Event Venue set on Grelen Nursery’s spacious 600 acres in Somerset, next to James Madison’s Montpelier (see Grelen featured in this itinerary section).

LOCAL GOVERNOR’S CUP GOLD MEDALISTS Charlottesville Vineyards put out a good showing at this year’s Governor’s Cup awards, with fourteen wines from eight local wineries pulling gold medals. In Barboursville, the steel-aged 2014 Vermentino Reserve from Barboursville Vineyards stunned judges with its vivid citrus nose and finessed finish. While the Vermentino isn’t on their tasting menu any longer, it is available by the bottle. Barboursville tasting menu ($7) offers a well rounded flight, including sparkling wines, a dessert wine, and their famous Octagon. Two Afton wines were included in the Governor’s Selection: Veritas 2013 Vintner’s Reserve and Cardinal Point’s 2014 Cabernet Franc. Veritas (tasting fee $7) is a family-owned vineyard known for their intricate whites and breathtaking venue. Cardinal Point is a vibrant, dog-friendly venue offering crisp, fruity whites, bright reds, and an original India Pale hopped chardonnay. Tasting fee of $7 is discounted for military personnel and teachers. Out of Horton in Gordonsville, the 2013 Petit Manseng was recognized. Horton’s wines range from traditional Nortons and Viogniers to their Blanco Xoco, a white wine infused with chocolate, and a number of fruit wines, from raspberry to pear and cranberry. Tasting fee is $5. Keswick Vineyards were awarded two gold medals, one for the 2013 Signature Series Cabernet Franc, and one for the 2014 Cabernet Franc Estate Reserve. Obviously, Keswick, based in Greenville, knows how to make a great Cab Franc. The dog-friendly vineyard has a fenced-in park for pups to run off leash while owners taste from their basic tasting menu (7 wines, $10) or reserve menu (9 wines, $15.) Michael Shaps, located on Harris Creek Road in Charlottesville, with an extended winework on Avon street, was recognized for the most wines of any Governor’s Cup vineyard this year. Their 2013 Raisin D’Etre White, 2013 Meritage, 2013 L. Scott, 2013 Tannat, and 2014 Petit Manseng were all gold medal winners. Their tasting room offers the opportunity to taste their both French-bottled and Virginia wines. Pollack, in Greenwood, was recognized for two of their 2012 vintages, the 2012 Meritage and the 2012 Merlot. These awards are emblematic of their reputation for well-made reds, available along with their whites and intriguing Port of Viognier in their shop and tasting room. (7 wines, $10.)

amed in honor of Princess Charlotte, the wife of George III, Charlottesville was settled in the 18th century on a hill overlooking the Rivanna River. Today, the City of Charlottesville and surrounding Albemarle County has a metropolitan population nearing 200,000 encompassing over 730 square miles of scenic and beautiful landscape. Charlottesville and Albemarle County offer a unique combination of natural beauty, a climate with four distinct seasons, rich historical and cultural attractions, and close proximity to both a national park and the nation’s capitol. The area consistently earns high marks as a desirable place to live; in recent years, it has appeared on top-ten lists of cities published by Money, Forbes, Kiplinger’s, and Men’s Health magazines as well as AARP and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Featuring the amenities of larger cities, Charlottesville is a vibrant university town that offers numerous outdoor recreational activities, organizations for senior citizens, fitness facilities, excellent private and public schools, indoor and outdoor shopping areas and entertainment venues, and residential communities that have developed through the years. These are just a few of the reasons why people choose to make Charlottesville and Albemarle County their home.
