FROM THE PUBLISHER

Columbus Jewish community continues to adapt, fill needs The past year has been one of cautious optimism. Although it’s been a slow process, Ohioans are continuing to get vaccinated against COVID-19 and many of us have received another dose to boost our immunity. Despite the omicron variant, breakthrough cases and the resulting measured return to in-person gatherings and celebrations, there’s reason to be encouraged as cases in Ohio are slowly decreasing. With relief, we at the Columbus Jewish Publication Company are hearing that reassurance from our partners, advertisers and readers, especially as we began returning to our own in-person events late last year. Our 2021 awards event for 18 Difference Makers returned to an in-person format at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Columbus in October, when we safely brought together 150 people to honor our 2021 class of change agents serving the local Jewish community and beyond. After holding the annual event virtually in 2020, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to return to an in-person celebration to mark its third year. And just like us, other local organizations – many of which are featured here in SOURCE 2022 – have taken a similar hybrid approach to bringing back events. While we continue to grapple with the pandemic and its lasting effects, we are also contending with increased antisemitism and other forms of violent extremism facing Jewish communities near and far. Most recently, we watched with a familiar sense of fear and sadness as a rabbi and three congregants were taken hostage at Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville, Texas. This time, the hostages freed themselves. Rabbi Charlie Cytron-Walker credited his training by Secure Community Network, the homeland security and safety initiative of the organized Jewish community in North America, for his ability to respond effectively, throwing a chair to distract the gunman and allowing the hostages to escape. It’s never been so clear that security training can be lifesaving. Locally, JewishColumbus serves as a central community convener and provides security for Jewish agencies, synagogues and schools. In conjunction with organizations and congregations, it works with SCN and local, state and federal law enforcement to act quickly, should any threats arise. While it’s horrifying and heartbreaking that protecting our community from antisemitic and other dangers is such a dominant yet normalized part of Jewish life, I have immense

gratitude for those keeping us safe. I’m grateful we have such strong resources, like JewishColumbus and SCN, to provide the security and safety training we all need in this reality. If you’d like to learn more about how SCN started as the vision of a Northeast Ohio Jewish Federation leader and the daily impact it has with local agencies and law enforcement everywhere, visit bit.ly/securecommunitynetwork to read a feature story recently published by the Columbus Jewish News on its history and impact. o does S fit into it all his annual magazine provides you with resources and information about the institutions doing their part locally and beyond to make a difference, engage the community in new ways, offer convenient, safe services with respect to Jewish traditions and values, and to ensure the health and safety of all. It functions as a directory to look to when you realize you need something, or perhaps want to give of your time, talent or treasure somewhere, but aren’t sure where to start. Part of the reason we publish SOURCE is to help do our part to relay the strong network of support and resources we have here in Jewish Columbus. As we continue to adapt with this ever-changing “new normal,” these organizations will continue to ste u and fill the needs that arise this year. I encourage you to continue to patronize and give back to these community stalwarts the CJPC is grateful to partner with, and I thank you for your enduring support of all we do in the local Jewish and secular communities. SOURCE reaches you as a helping hand, an anchor and as a way to connect, at a time when connection can feel difficult, strained or tenuous. he agencies listed can hel all of us grapple with the changes in our lives brought on by the pandemic and the ripple effect it has had. On behalf of all of us at the CJPC, our professional staff and our board of directors, thank you for continuing to give back, repair our world and do your part to ensure the health and safety of all of us. We are truly stronger together.

PASSOVER

Friday, April 15 (begins at sunset) Saturday, April 23 (ends at nightfall) The eight-day festival of Passover is celebrated in the early spring, from the 15th through the 22nd of the Hebrew month of Nissan. It commemorates the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. By following the rituals of Passover, we have the ability to relive and experience the true freedom that our ancestors gained.

SHAVUOT

Saturday, June 4 (begins at sunset) Monday, June 6 (ends at nightfall) Shavuot coincides with the date that God gave the Torah to the Jewish people at Mount Sinai more than 3,300 years ago. It comes after 49 days of eager counting, as we prepared ourselves for this special day. It is celebrated by lighting candles, staying up all night to learn Torah, hearing the reading of the Ten Commandments in synagogue, feasting on dairy foods and more.

TISHA B’AV

Saturday, Aug. 6 (begins at sunset) Sunday, Aug. 7 (ends at nightfall) The Three Weeks is an annual mourning period that falls in the summer during which we do not cut our hair, purchase new clothes, listen to music or hold weddings. 2022 HOLIDAYS

JEWISH HOLIDAYS and noteworthy dates ROSH HASHANAH

Sunday, Sept. 25 (begins at sunset) Tuesday, Sept. 27 (ends at nightfall) Rosh Hashanah is the birthday of the universe, the day G-d created Adam and Eve, and it’s celebrated as the head of the Jewish year. It’s celebrated with candlelighting in the evenings, festive meals with sweet delicacies during the night and day, prayer services that include the sounding of the ram’s horn (shofar) on both mornings and desisting from creative work.

YOM KIPPUR

Tuesday, Oct. 4 (begins at sunset) Wednesday, Oct. 5 (ends at nightfall) Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year – the day on which we are closest to God and to the quintessence of our own souls. It is the Day of Atonement – “For on this day He will forgive you, to purify you, that you be cleansed from all your sins before God” (Leviticus 16:30). For nearly 26 hours – from several minutes before sunset on ishrei to after nightfall on ishrei e af ict our souls, or a stain from food and drink, do not wash or anoint our bodies, do not wear leather footwear and abstain from marital relations.

SUKKOT

Sunday, Oct. 9 (begins at sunset) Sunday, Oct. 16 (ends at nightfall) For 40 years, as our ancestors traversed the Sinai Desert, following the Exodus from Egypt, miraculous “clouds of glory” surrounded and hovered over them, shielding them from the dangers and discomforts of the desert. er since, e remem er od s kindness and reaffirm our trust in is ro idence y d elling in a sukkah a hut of temporary construction with a roof covering of branches – for the duration of the Sukkot festival (on the Jewish calendar Tishrei 15-21). For seven days and nights, we eat all our meals in the sukkah and otherwise regard it as our home.

SHEMINI ATZERET / SIMCHAT TORAH Sunday, Oct. 16 (begins at sunset) Tuesday, Oct. 18 (ends at nightfall)

The holiday of Sukkot is followed by an independent holiday called Shemini Atzeret. In Israel, this is a one-day holiday; in the Diaspora, it is a two-day holiday, and the second day is known as Simchat Torah. This holiday is characterized by utterly unbridled joy, which surpasses even the joy of Sukkot. The joy reaches its climax on Simchat Torah, when we celebrate the conclusion – and restart – of the annual Torah-reading cycle.

CHANUKAH
