FROM THE EDITOR

Singles Issue is back – and looking to make matches

T

his edition marks the seventh Jstyle Singles Issue, and I hope it’s a lucky one. It’s also the first Singles magazine since the COVID-19 pandemic hit Ohio two years ago, as the last issue published at the end of 2019. It certainly feels like a long time ago. Similarly, for those who were single during the height of the pandemic when in-person dates were risky, the return of dating – and not on Zoom – was probably a long time coming. Just as I hope people’s dating lives have improved over the past year or so, I hope this return issue sparks some renewed interest in dating and meeting new people more generally. I have a little wishful thinking, too, that this Singles Issue – and the release party we host for it – might have some matchmaking potential, which stems from some good news Jstyle received recently. It started when the Cleveland Jewish News, which publishes Jstyle, received an engagement announcement from two former Jstyle singles, who met after both being featured in the magazine. Josh Small and Erica Glazer were featured in different issues of the magazine, two years apart, but connected on social media after Josh saw Erica’s issue. One thing led to another, and a couple years later, they are set to be married this September. Of course, I was excited to reach out to them to be interviewed for this issue. You can read their story on Page 32. While Josh and Erica are the first couple we’re aware of who became engaged after first connecting over Jstyle, we’ve heard about a few other dates that have come, at least in part, from the magazine. While we don’t know if those dates turned into anything more serious, we take pride in the fact we had some small part in people meeting up and connecting in some way. After all, while it can be frustrating, the more dating experiences you have, the better you get at it.

Spring 2022

On a podcast I heard recently, Logan Ury, a Jewish behavioral scientist, dating coach and director of relationship science at the dating app Hinge, said something that hit on that idea. She said while love is natural, dating and knowing who will make a good partner is not – it’s a skill learned from experience. The more you do it, the more you learn what to focus on, what red flags to look for, what makes a good date and how it translates (or doesn’t!) into a real partnership, and more about yourself and what you are looking for. Along those lines, we took Logan’s advice for planning a fun date and compiled some Northeast Ohio ideas for readers, as well as activities and organizations that might lead to meeting people with similar interests and backgrounds. It’s important to note that all these ideas can also be done with a friend or already-established partner. Also in this issue, we check in with two new businesses: Pop Culture CLE, which opened almost a year ago, and Nubeigel, which is set to open this summer. We also feature a home improvement section for those looking to spruce up their living spaces this season, as well as our regular fashion and beauty features. While we always welcome feedback from readers at editor@jstylemagazine.com, we encourage you to reach out if you tried any of these date or meeting tips. And we’d especially love to hear if you met someone special – either a friend or more – through the magazine, as Erica and Josh did. And maybe our next Singles Issue will feature you or someone you know.

Leah Basch

About me... I care about others and have an empathic heart. I’m easy to talk to and love being an aunt (Ti-Ti). Family, friends and traditions are important to me. I’m charismatic, but not over the top; intelligent and educated, but not pretentious; down to earth, but likes to live well. I enjoy cuddling up by the fireplace with pizza and a movie, but equally enjoy a good excuse to don heels and a cocktail dress. I live healthily, but don’t deprive myself of life’s luxuries. I enjoy sunsets, yoga/meditation, travel, bubble baths, coffee, open fires, live music/sporting events, dining out and anything water. My favorite place for dinner... Flour, Luca, M Italian. I love Italian food. Yours Truly is definitely my happy place! My dating horror story... My friends tell me I could write a book. Maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, however, let’s just say at least a chapter or two. My favorite Jewish holiday... Definitely the High Holidays – there’s something special about the gift of reflection, renewal and asking for forgiveness that is very meaningful in so many ways. An annual check-in, moral self-assessment and chance to “be a better version of ourselves” than the year before and beyond. My last trip to Israel... Age 15, for six weeks with NFTY – amazing! My favorite part of Jewish Cleveland... Feeling a sense of community and support. If someone wants to connect with me, the best way is... Facebook or email (Lbsmile@aol.com) – yes, I still have and love my AOL account.

Leah wears an easy slip TENCEL dress in midnight by Neu Nomads, a camel duster cotton/cashmere blend sweater by Neu Nomads, and long Dorado necklace by Abacus Row, all from Ladder in Shaker Heights. Gem necklace by Beat Friends and black lucite red heart purse are from Toni in Style in Chagrin Falls. Shoes by Marc Fisher are her own.

About me... I am a passionate person who puts my heart and soul into everything I do. During the summer, I love being able to run around with the campers (while wearing my hot dog costume). In the off-season, I take full advantage of my weekends by traveling and exploring new places near and far. I enjoy going to the farmers market and buying fresh fruits and veggies for the week and exploring Shaker Lakes and the Metroparks with friends. My favorite place for dinner... Hola Tacos on Larchmere in Cleveland My favorite place for a drink... Cloak & Dagger in Tremont My bubbe would describe me to a prospective mate... “She’s the most terrific thing. She’s the best thing in Cleveland and in fact, all of Ohio” – my bubbe, who said I needed to quote her verbatim. “Kosher” or “non-kosher” dating habits... Kosher My dating horror story... Awkward Zoom dates during the height of the pandemic My celebrity crush... Zac Efron stole my heart in 2006 and still has it to this day At a Jewish wedding, you’d find me... Either on the dance floor or becoming best friends with your grandma My favorite bat mitzvah memory... The Torah I was carrying was essentially my size and I almost dropped it during the Torah parade. My favorite part of Jewish Cleveland... I love being able to connect with people who I haven’t seen in years and playing Jewish geography whenever I can! If someone wants to connect with me, the best way is... Find me on Facebook

He seems like a cool hang with a comparable sense of humor to me. My hidden talent... I play the guitar, viola and dabble at a few more instruments. My favorite Jewish holiday... Definitely Shabbos, especially after my experience at The Ohio State University where I attended Chabad with some regularity. It’s hard to beat being surrounded by good friends, good food and an opportunity to relax and step out of time. If someone wants to connect with me, the best way is... I’m not one to do much social media, however if you private message me via Facebook, I will get back to you.

Match by Couple engaged after meeting through the Singles Issue By Amanda Koehn Like all of Jstyle magazine’s Singles Issues, the most recent photoshoot in winter 2019 highlighted single Jewish community members. One Jewish Clevelander featured, Erica Glazer, quickly caught the eye of Josh Small – who was also featured in the Singles Issue a couple editions earlier in 2017. “I saw Erica’s issue of the Singles magazine and I thought she looked cute and I decided to reach out to her the only way I knew how – through Facebook,” Small told Jstyle during a March Zoom interview. “I asked her to go out, and we did and then we hit it off.” The pair initially chatted about a song she mentioned in her magazine profile, “Is It Love?” by Above & Beyond. They realized they had similar taste in electronic music, which was an easy branching off point. They met for their first date at Paladar Latin Kitchen & Rum Bar in Woodmere in December 2019.

“It was funny – I ended up telling one of my really good friends that I went out with this guy (and) she happened to know his family really well,” says Glazer, now 29, adding that her friend vouched for Small. Fast forward two years and a pandemic later, Glazer and Small are now engaged. “I liked her from the start,” says Small, 34. “It grew over time – our feelings and love for each other.” A turning point in their relationship was their first Passover together a few months after they met. “This was a really special moment for us – for him to meet my parents, meet my family and have a really nice like Jewish holiday together for the first time,” Glazer says. “I feel like we really grew from there at that point.” Small says it was around that time he first told Glazer he loved her. As the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic occurred early in their relationship, it factored into how they spent time together – which may have

actually been in their favor. Small is introverted and enjoyed getting to know Glazer while hanging out at each other’s houses rather than a booming social setting, he says. They learned they balance each other out well, Glazer adds. “He always jokes that we made it through COVID,” she says. They got engaged on Glazer’s birthday, Nov. 29, 2021. With a hectic career in wine sales, Glazer says Small is patient and supportive of the busyness in her life. “Being in sales I can have a lot of busy days – I have a busy career,” she says. “... And he’s just really patient with me between my career and everything else, and just kind of brings me to calm at some of the hard moments at times. He’s just such a loving person. I have no doubt he’s going to make a great husband, great father eventually. He’s just such a supportive person and my partner forever.” Small, who works in consulting and financial analytics, says he values Glazer’s drive, organizational skills and their

shared love for animals. Together, they adopted three cats, Hawthorn, Snickers and Chloe. In their free time, the pair enjoys hiking, going to concerts and checking out Cleveland’s restaurants. Their favorite date spots include The Fairmount and Gigi’s on Fairmount, both in Cleveland

Heights. Small is from Beachwood and Glazer is from Orange Village. They now live together in Solon and are planning a September wedding at Landerhaven in Mayfield Heights. The wedding will be officiated by Rabbi Sruly Koval of Jewish Family Experience (JFX).

While they planned the major aspects of the wedding quickly, like nearly any couple many months out from their wedding, Glazer says there are still a “billion little things” to figure out. “It’s going to be here before we know it,” she says.

Report: Cleveland ranks No. 2 for singles

C

leveland trails only Detroit – and by less than 1% – as the leading hot spot to find a date, according to RentCafe, which based its findings on using U.S. Census data to rank cities by their number of single households. RentCafe is a national apartment search website, which identified the top 30 cities headed by singles in a Feb. 8 report. The U.S. Census Bureau’s 2019 American Community Survey was used to rank the cities. Cleveland ranked second, with 72.4% single households. Detroit was first with 73.1%. Three other Ohio cities made the top 30 list as well: • Dayton, with 68.9% single households, ranked fourth behind Rochester, N.Y. • Cincinnati, with 66% single households, ranked 13th. • Toledo, with 62.7% single households, ranked 28th. Columbus didn’t make the list.

jstylemagazine.com

“Recent Census data showed that almost half of U.S. adults are single, which translates to roughly 127 million people across the nation – there are plenty of fish in the sea, as the old saying goes,” RentCafe’s report by Laura Pop-Badiu reads. “This is especially true in Detroit, Mich., Cleveland, Ohio, and Rochester, N.Y., the top three hotspots with most single adults and, thus, the places with the highest chances of finding a date, according to our analysis of U.S. cities with the highest percentage of single households. And, with all three being large cities with dense populations and countless entertainment options for the dating scene, they check plenty of boxes for singles ready to mingle.” RentCafe’s story pointed out that southern cities may be more desirable for the number of entertainment venues. -Jane Kaufman

DATING IN JEWISH CLEVELAND

F

or daters in Cleveland, it’s easy to frequent the same places over and over again – often meeting for coffee or drinks somewhere convenient for both parties. While something simple and stress free may be a good bet for a first date, it never hurts to get more creative. According to Logan Ury, a behavioral scientist, dating coach and director of relationship science at the dating app Hinge, it’s best to get to know someone in a situation where you have

an opportunity to show who you are and actually have fun. Getting out of small-talk mode and moving quickly to talking about what you care about – and noticing how the other person makes you feel – can only improve dating experiences. Don’t know where to start? For this Singles issue, Jstyle shares some date ideas and information about the wealth of Jewish organizations and groups where meeting people comes a bit more naturally. - Compiled by Amanda Koehn

MEET AT... Synagogues and young professionals’ groups Northeast Ohio’s many synagogues and young professionals groups hold social events, often not requiring attendees to be members. Here’s a few to check out: • ATID: B’nai Jeshurun Congregation’s 20s and 30s social group. More information at facebook.com/groups/ AtidBnaiJeshurun. • Fairmount Young Professionals: Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple’s group to connect Jewish young professionals. More information at facebook.com/fairmountyp. • MoHo CLE: Moishe House Cleveland in downtown Cleveland houses three Jewish Clevelanders who use their space and connections to host small community events for other young adult Jews. The group hosts brunches, happy hours, watch parties, Shabbat dinners, outdoor activities and more. More information at facebook.com/mohocle. Jewish Federation of Cleveland gatherings The Jewish Federation of Cleveland provides many opportunities to get involved in Jewish communal life, whether volunteering, attending an event or celebrating a holiday or initiative. Its Young Leadership Division, which engages Clevelanders between the ages of 21 and 45, holds volunteer and social events around the city throughout the year. To get involved and start meeting folks with similar interests, visit jewishcleveland.org/involved/yld.

TRY A MATCHMAKER...

VOLUNTEER – ANYWHERE...

If dating apps or meeting new people in the wild just isn’t working, you may want to try a different method with a strong Jewish history: a matchmaker. Cleveland Yentas is a nonprofit matchmaking organization serving the Jewish community, and which aims to strengthen it. Visit cleyentas.com for more information.

Jewish and secular nonprofits in the Cleveland area are always in need of new volunteers – and giving back could be just the place to meet new people with similar interests. Plus, you’ll improve the community at the same time. Visit cjn.org/source to learn about organizations.

PLAN A DATE TO... 78th Street Studios See some art created by local makers at the 78th Street Studios, located in Cleveland’s Detroit Shoreway neighborhood. A date among the 60-plus various galleries within the arts complex will give you a chance to talk about creative works that resonate with you, leading to discussions about what you like and dislike. Every third Friday of the month, the 78th Street Studios host an art walk, where the galleries are open, and many have new exhibitions on view in the evening. Cleveland Metroparks Take a hike at one of the 18 Cleveland Metroparks reservations for a scenic and active date. A Metropark date is not only free, but offers a chance for some light exercise and experiences with nature. Talk about the animals and plant life you see, and the importance of experiencing new spaces. Museums Explore Cleveland’s rich museum scene. Visit one or more of the museums near Cleveland’s University Circle, including the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Museum of Contemporary Art and Cleveland History Center. Or, head to Beachwood to visit the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage to learn more about Jewish heritage and history.

Catch a show Greater Cleveland is home to a variety of theaters showing both new local productions and national touring plays and musicals. From the renowned Playhouse Square theaters, to Cleveland Heights’ Dobama Theatre, to Cleveland Public Theatre in the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood, to Karamu House in Fairfax, to Chagrin Valley Little Theatre in Chagrin Falls, there are plenty of options for finding a show that sparks your interest and will give you something to talk about after.

Marshall Carpet One and Rug Gallery 56 years and 3 generations

S

hown are Tyler, Matt, Ryan and Nate Wien, the third generation of Marshall Carpet One and Rug Gallery with their father, Marc. They are both proud and excited to continue this family-owned business and the legacy of their grandfather, Marshall, who opened the store in 1966. Each has grown up in the business and learned it from the bottom up. But the real reason for their continued success is understanding each customer’s needs and making sure the choices they make are the right ones for them. This third generation, family-owned business has enjoyed a long history of serving generations of families. Another reason for this longevity is the personal and professional service from trained flooring professionals. Matt Wien stated, “There may be a perception that because we’re family owned and provide such consistent professional service, we’re more expensive than the chains and big box stores. You’ll be surprised to find we’re not. What you will find is what we believe to be the largest and most comprehensive selection of commercial and residential flooring options in Ohio. Options include a wide range of carpet for any

application along with special designer carpets only found at Marshall, a full range of hardwood, luxury vinyl flooring and ceramic tile. You’ll also find a selection of over 1,000 area rugs from around the world, which is more than any Northeast Ohio retailer. Marshall Carpet One and Rug Gallery can even provide custom applications, custom color carpets and make custom area rugs. So, if you are looking for flooring and are looking for options, then there is only one place you need to go – Marshall Carpet One and Rug Gallery. Marshall Carpet One and Rug Gallery is located in the Eastgate Shopping Center. Hours: 9:30-8 Mon. 9-5:30 Tues. -Sat. Closed Sun. marshallcarpet.com

Sustainability + Cost Efficiency Local professionals offer tips for making your home energy efficient

By Ed Carroll Making your home energy efficient isn’t just something that’s good for the environment. It also offers a slew of benefits to homeowners and condo-dwellers alike. An energy-efficient home can reduce your heat loss, making it more comfortable and helping save money on utility bills. There’s a wide range of options available to potentially make a home more energy efficient, some more extensive than others. Industry professionals John Hansen, president at Suntrol in Bedford Heights, Tristan Rader, Ohio program director at Solar United Neighbors, and John Marcus, president at Designer Accents at Home in Bedford Hts., share their thoughts on why energy efficiency is so important and improvements you can make to your home, condo or even apartment. Hansen says it’s “common sense” to make your home more efficient. “Basically, it reduces the amount of heat you put into your house from disappearing,” he says. “It also would reduce the air conditioning that you’re paying for to cool the house from escaping. You’re paying for items that are disappearing.” The options available to apartment renters are likely limited, as most of the issues energy efficiency addresses are handled by the landlord, he says, but there are some fixes. While renters may not be able to replace the old glass in inefficient windows,

Hansen

Rader

they may be able to put up window film to keep more of the hot or cold air inside the apartment – though it won’t stop it from escaping completely. Hansen says some of his customers are initially skeptical that a relatively small piece of film can make a big difference, but it can. If anyone is curious about adding window treatments, Suntrol offers free estimates and they like to help inform people about their options, he adds. Window treatments can also benefit those living in houses or condos, though sometimes condo associations have rules or limitations on the types of treatments owners can use, Marcus says. He says Designer Accents at Home works with customers to find a window treatment that works for them and fits their interior design. The company sends a designer out to the house

Suntrol

to help customers refine their style and select a product to match their needs. Motorization options that allow you to adjust things from your phone, whether you’re at home or away, are also becoming increasingly popular, he says. “That helps in your energy efficiency as well, so you can time our PowerView window treatments which allow you to set a time for when your shades go up or go down,” he says. “It also gives you the benefit that (if) you’re going to be away, and you forgot to put your blinds in the down position or in the up position, you can go right on your phone and adjust your blinds.” Another option for homeowners to make their houses more energy efficient is far more sweeping than adding window treatments: converting your home to use solar energy. Rader, who is also a Lakewood city councilman, says a solar-powered home isn’t necessarily a winterized home, though it is better for the environment. His organization, Solar United Neighbors, which partners with the Cuyahoga County Department of Sustainability, is a nonprofit that arranges for solar co-ops, or groups of neighbors, to purchase the panels necessary for solar energy. Solar United Neighbors has teams around the country that work with communities and residents. “For efficiency, you want to ensure the fuels you are burning, or the electricity you’re using to heat your home ... (is) not losing that heat,” he says. “The first and foremost thing you can do is home weatherization, making sure you have enough insulation and types of insulation in your walls, (and) the right types of windows to make sure you’re not losing that heat. You lose that heat, you lose money.” As for solar, there are two main types of options – solar heating, which isn’t as common in Ohio due to the weather

jstylemagazine.com

Suntrol

and climate, and photovoltaic (PV) solar, which is where the majority of Solar United Neighbors’ work lies. The organization helps people install the panels on their homes to convert the sunlight directly into electricity, replacing what they’d use from a traditional energy grid. Once financing is in line and everything is ready for homeowners, installation of the panels is quick – typically only two days – and it’s handled completely by solar installers, Rader says. They will also help take care of the necessary permits, much like a contractor would for a more traditional home repair job. “They actually do all that for you, so it’s not as scary as it sounds,” he says. js

Bold Comeback By Courtney Byrnes Fashion and home decor trends seem to follow a cyclical pattern with fads of the past making a comeback every few years. Sun-kissed serves By Becky Raspe

The Powder Room Makeup Oasis & Boutique

As the weather begins to warm up and Northeast Ohio starts to see more sunshine, makeup trends are leaning toward sun-kissed, peachy looks to complement the season. The professionals at The Powder Room Makeup Oasis & Boutique in Woodmere suggest pairing a warm bronzer with a light flush of rosy blush to the cheeks, and a clear lip gloss over a rose-toned lip-liner, or flesh-toned lip gloss for lush, juicy lips. If you really want to flex your makeup skills, use your blush and contour as eyeshadow to bring the whole look together. Think dewy, warmed up skin, paired with glossy lips and glitter eye shadows that can reflect the sun’s rays as you enjoy more time outside this spring.

Elle’s charity brunch raises $5K for Ukraine Elle Restaurant & Lounge, a FrenchItalian restaurant in Solon created by co-owners Jay Leitson and Izzy Schachner, held an “Embracing Ukraine” charity brunch, resulting in a fullybooked reservation schedule and an approximately $5,000 donation to causes supporting Ukrainian women and children. Tickets for the March brunch were $25 per person, with 100% of the proceeds going to those affected by the Russian invasion. Leitson told the Cleveland Jewish News at the time that due to the busy week staff had prior to the event, it was limited to about 150 guests to allow for a comfortable work flow and ample time for guests to order and eat. Donations were accepted as well. “There was a really good flow and it was always relatively full,” Leitson says. “We gave people about an hour to eat so we could get new guests in quickly.

Tommy’s turns 50 Tommy’s Restaurant in Cleveland Heights is celebrating its 50th year. The restaurant, which opened in 1972 at the corner of Coventry Road and Euclid Heights Boulevard, started as a small soda fountain shop and later moved to two other locations – 1820 Coventry Road in April 1978 and to its current location in 1988. For a time, Tommy’s operated kitchen service in its second location and dining service in its current location, when a fire destroyed half of a block of Coventry Road, including Tommy’s dining room. All operations moved to the current location, 1824 Coventry Road, in May 1993. Owner Tom Fello told the CJN early this year that hitting the 50th anniversary is “unbelievable.” “It went by so fast, and I wouldn’t have done it any differently,” he says. “I love it, and I love what I do. I was lucky to find something to do in my teens and start this.

ICY IDEA

Pop Culture CLE brings creative gourmet desserts to Solon By Courtney Byrnes

S

earching for a tasty and refreshing treat to cool you down as the days get warmer? Or maybe you’re looking to serve spring party guests a unique, one-of-a-kind dessert? Look no further than Pop Culture CLE in Solon. What started in 2018 as an original treat shared with friends became a food truck, and has since turned into a brickand-mortar store that offers fun creations on a stick and other gourmet desserts. “I made a strawberry basil popsicle and put it in prosecco,” says Nicole Dauria, founder and CEO of Pop Culture CLE. “It was so good that one of my girlfriends said to me ‘Oh my gosh, this is the best thing I’ve ever had. You should start a business making these.’” From there, Dauria says she began to do some research and found there was little competition in the world of gourmet ice-pops. She started making other flavors and in a snowball effect, her business took off. Operating at first as a food truck with a fleet of five carts, Dauria served over 100 events in her first year. In May 2021, she opened her first shop in Solon. Approaching its first birthday, business has been great, she says.

college, she moved back to Northeast Ohio to raise her family and now lives in the city she grew up in with her wife, Tracie, and children, Mia and Dominic. The Pop Culture CLE owner had always dreamed of having her own business. She started off with a corporate concierge service which morphed into a delivery service out of college, where she says she learned much about running a business. Prior to becoming a manufacturer of gourmet ice cream and whimsical, decadent desserts, her previous career was in executive search as companies hired her to find top talent. Dauria is also adopted, and out of curiosity took a couple athome DNA test kits to find out more about herself and where she comes from. When the results came in, there were many new discoveries. First, she found she is 50% Ashkenazi Jewish. Second, she has a brother, and a father who is 100% Ashkenazi and lives in Alabama with his wife. “Through that program I realized ... there was somebody labeled my brother,” Dauria says. “So I did a little bit of research and found out who he was, and I reached out to him and just mentioned that his father is potentially my father.” Her biological brother, who was initially shocked by the news of this potential sister, reached out to their biological father, who was equally as surprised to learn about his daughter who was given up for adoption, she says. After taking a day to process the news, he contacted her. Dauria says his first words to her were “If I knew that I had a child, you would have never been given up for adoption, and I would have raised you on my own.” From that moment forward, Dauria has stayed in contact

and flown out to spend time with her newly-found biological family. She says although she will always consider the couple that raised her to be her parents, her family has certainly grown since that discovery.

MORE (TASTY) GROWTH Also experiencing plenty of growth is Dauria’s business. While the opening of a store location in 2021 was a big milestone, Dauria’s ambitions have not slowed. New in 2022 was the addition of another dessert truck, bringing on pastry chef Shelby Costo and possibly adding a liquor license. As soon as Pop Culture CLE gets the liquor license, they will be able to make bakery items and ice cream infused with alcohol – much like the prosecco ice pop that first inspired the business, she says. Located in a two-story house on Solon Road, Pop Culture CLE’s shop has both a front and back patio. Inside, the space is decorated fittingly with dessert-centric modern pop art. The natural light filtering in gives it a spacious feel, yet remains cozy enough to feel at home. The business now includes the store location, two operating food trucks and a catering business that serves all types of events from b’nai mitzvahs, weddings, birthday parties, corporate catering and school fundraisers. It serves 20 to 30 events a month, Dauria says. What makes Pop Culture CLE stand out is the unique frozen treat flavors, with some that are seasonal and some year-round staples. Its website shows creations like gelato on a stick, with flavors like key lime pie, Italian pistachio, orange creamsicle, Mexican chocolate and banana Nutella, to name a few. Sorbet

And much of the menu is vegan. Beyond frozen treats for those hot spring and summer days, Pop Culture CLE also makes Liège waffles, offered with a selection of delectable toppings, as well as caramel apples, rice crispy pops and hot chocolate bombs. On any given day, Dauria says there are about 16 frozen treat flavors to choose from. She notes hits like Fruity Pebbles, crème brulée and the most popular – s’mores. “(S’mores) is a chocolate-custard popsicle with roasted marshmallow cream and then rolled in graham crackers,” she says. “It’s so good, and that is our best-selling popsicle.” js Amanda Koehn

BAGEL BEGINNINGS Craft bagel shop coming to Cleveland Heights

By Becky Raspe

C

leveland Heights bagel lovers are set to get a new option – and one that happens to be kosher – when Nubeigel opens this summer. Headed up by chef and baker Josh Admon, Nubeigel’s entire concept and vibe are encapsulated in its name, he told Admon Jstyle. With the old, European spelling of bagel and the Jewish word “nu,” Admon says as a proud Jew, he was keen to incorporate both the cultural aspect of his business as well as the theme he wants to carry through it. “The name itself really says a lot about what I’m trying to do in general,” says Admon, 41. “It came about because people were asking what I was doing and when I would open (a business here). And when I realized I wanted to open a bagel shop, I felt some internal resistance to say that. People have this notion and idea of what a bagel shop is. And while it’s not going to be this radical, new idea, I want to treat (Nubeigel) a little differently.” After growing up in Los Angeles, Admon lived and worked throughout Europe and settled in Israel for 15 years. While living in Jerusalem, he created, owned and ran a coffee and pastry shop at the Shuk. He moved to University Heights with his wife, Raquel, and their five children less than two years ago with the plan to come back to America and settle in a family-oriented city. He says similar to his shop in Jerusalem, he’s going for a “very authentic, raw, noncommercial – real type of feel,” for Nubeigel. “It’s this idea of the traditional quality,

Stone Yavne High School in Beachwood. “People look at bagels as this mass-produced and bulk product, banging out as many bagels as we can get. This is more like a craft product, doing smaller batches.” He’s aiming for the feel of a coffee shop, with an open kitchen so patrons can see

the action. It will serve bagels, schmears and sandwiches, with a focus on quality. Coffee will also be emphasized and Admon is now looking at local roasters. “I will have a little bit more fun – I’m not going to stick to the rules,” he says, adding he also will feel out what customers want. Implementing his experience with baking, he’s using, “natural fermentation and yeast, a cold-proofing fermentation process that has a lot of benefits physically

and adds a lot of taste and texture to the product,” to create his bagels. As someone who keeps strictly kosher, Admon says one of the reasons he decided to open a bagel shop is because the product is inherently kosher itself. He is already exploring local kosher certification, but wants the customers to understand that being a kosher shop isn’t the focus for him. “I didn’t want to get into this business as a kosher restaurant,” he explains. “The idea is that I am building a business and opening my doors to as many people as I can. I really respect and gain a lot of diversity from different people. Nubeigel is a bagel shop that happens to be kosher, not a kosher bagel shop.” The diversity aspect of the business was one of the reasons he chose Cleveland Heights. The bagel shop will be at 2254 Lee Road. “I wanted something that has a lot of life,” he says. “I feel like things here are missing a little bit of beat. You’d never go into a bagel shop and get a playlist you’d hear at a bar. I want people to come – whether they’re here for two minutes or 20 – and enjoy the warmth. And I chose Cleveland Heights because of that – I love funky, authentic places. I like soul. I am a very uncommon person by nature, and I felt like (Lee Road) had a lot of character. You don’t find that a lot.” While there is a lot of work ahead for Nubeigel to be ready for its projected early summer opening, Admon says it all boils down to the sheer excitement he’s feeling. “I am most excited about just being out there again, creating and meeting and connecting with people,” he says. “I always found that with my work and career, that is where I can really be myself. Let my hair down and just be me. It’s been a year and a half since we left Israel and since my last job, and I’ve really been missing that. I love to cook and create, and overall building communities and connecting people.”

By Carlo Wolff Downtown Cleveland has experienced far more than a facelift in the past five years, making a decisive transition to being a place to live, not just work. It now offers various kinds of home in projects such as The Lumen, the Residences at Halle, The 9, The Athlon, and, opening its doors during the COVID-19 pandemic in August 2020, the mixed-use development called The May.

The May repurposes an iconic Cleveland building

All feature high-quality finishes, state-of-the-art appliances, technology as high as the ceilings, parking, great views of downtown, and sophisticated style. Pet friendliness rules. What makes The May different? For one, there’s its history. For another, there’s a synergistic hotel component. Opened in 1914 as The May Company, the massive building with its impressive terra-cotta façade was said to be the third-

largest department store in the country. Designed by the famous urban planner Daniel Burnham, who also designed Cleveland’s Mall, it is massive at 148 feet tall and 880,000 square feet. In 1931, the addition of the seventh and eighth floors expanded its sales area to more than 1 million square feet. It was a key shopping destination for Clevelanders until it closed in January 1993, a victim of flight to the suburbs and changing shopping habits. The May spans a city block, from Euclid Avenue to Prospect Avenue. Talk about footprint. This singular, steel-frame structure was vacant for years after the store closed, and much of the interior architecture was gutted, according to the website clevelandhistorical.org. Remnants of its former glory adorn its rebirth, like the thick, tall (and waterproofed) pillars in its open-air, three-story atrium on the sixth floor, and some of the windows in its interior staircases. Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert’s Detroit-based Bedrock real estate firm acquired the building in 2017. It redeveloped The May as apartments, offering as of March 11, rental units at monthly market rates of $1,270 for a 663-square-foot one-bedroom to $2,990 for a 1,548-square-foot two-bedroom. Readying The May for residential living was challenging, says Ivy Greaner, Bedrock’s chief operating officer. “Some of the challenges Bedrock had to overcome included turning the former department store’s 100,000-square-foot floor plates into apartments, designing an interior 500-space parking garage and an open-air atrium space, and restoring or replacing the exterior terra-cotta façade,” Greaner writes in a Jstyle email interview.

Inside The May The May’s website lists units spanning a studio of 570 square feet, onebedrooms of 663 to 1,080 square feet, two-bedrooms of 955 to 1,528 square feet, and a three-bedroom of 1,413 square feet. There are 45 different floor plans. Each apartment has a washer-dryer stack. The first floor is earmarked for retail.

Bedrock Opposite page: The May’s colorful open-air atrium. Above: The May building looks out to downtown Cleveland’s Public Square.

For now, longtime tenants Cuyahoga Community College, Taco Bell Cantina and the restaurant Pura Vida are The May’s nonresidential anchors. The May includes about 900,000 square feet of residential, with approximately 80,000 square feet available for retail. And Bedrock officials say there is significant interest in the available retail space. Bedrock does not disclose specific financial information, Greaner says, at the same time noting that Federal Historic Preservation Tax Incentives were applied to the building’s restoration. Bedrock also does not release occupancy information. “Dedicated time, resources and consideration were devoted to the project to respect the landmark’s history, including restoring features such as the

original wall sconces, the illuminated May Company signage and pediment clock,” Greaner says. “We also recreated some of the interior historic column bases and column capitals, the upper-level windows, and we refurbished the original lower-level windows with the iconic ‘M’ insignia.” A tour of the building, including a look at apartments of various sizes, attests to its personality. The May exudes confidence, even power. Bedrock’s restoration has carved it into various configurations, all of which feel airy. The living rooms and kitchen areas, graced by the natural light streaming through the tall windows, are spacious. The smaller bedrooms feel cozy at worst, not cramped. Wide hallways add to the building’s breathable

atmosphere. The color palette is greige, with dark accents. It’s soothing. The May is anything but cookie-cutter. Its 300-plus apartments are an inviting blend of the historic and the contemporary, including a large “makerspace,” a yoga studio, a 6,000-squarefoot fitness center said to be downtown’s largest, and a touch of whimsy in playful lobby furniture. All these are available to The May’s residents. There’s an outdoor patio on the roof with gas grills, fire pits and commanding views of Public Square. As of March 16, all these also became available to guests of a more transitory nature.

Enter the ROOST The May is Bedrock’s first residential venture in Cleveland. It’s also the first ROOST Apartment Hotel outside of Philadelphia, the headquarters of the extended-stay hotel brand owned by Method Co. As of March 15, 62 apartments on three floors of The May are now available for both short- and long-term ROOST accommodations, according to a news release. The release stresses the sophisticated design and luxuries of the ROOST apartments, from Danish-modern coffee tables to vintage Turkish rugs, artisanal in-room coffee and a bike share program. The vibe is business-boutique. It seems urbanity is the goal at both The May and Cleveland’s first ROOST.

“We are thrilled to open ROOST Cleveland in the May Company building in the heart of downtown Cleveland,” Randall Cook, CEO and co-founder of Method Co, says in the release. “The 62 ROOST units are stunning with the largest floor plans in our portfolio, oversized windows that flood the units with natural light and access to The May’s incredible amenities.” “The May caters to everyone who seeks a welcoming environment to live, work and play in downtown Cleveland,” Greaner says. She calls The May “one of the largest adaptive reuse projects in the city’s history,” and its incorporation of current and nostalgic elements “rather unique.” With emphasis on the unique. js
