The Power of Every
Vision
Jeffrey and Patricia (Trisha) Cole have worked for years to transform eye care for Cleveland Clinic patients. In 1999, a lead gift made by Jeff and his company established the Cole Eye Institute. In 2016, the couple made a significant commitment to expand the institute’s capabilities and physical footprint for the benefit of even more patients. Congratulations to our longtime friends on the Outstanding Philanthropist Leadership Award. You are truly visionary in your philanthropy and have brought the precious gift of sight to so many people.
WELCOME Welcome to our celebration of National Philanthropy Day 2020. It has been my honor and privilege to be the Chair of this important event for fundraising professionals. While, this year’s event is altered, like so much else going on in the world, I have been very fortunate to work with some of the most dedicated, bright and energetic professionals in the field. My heartfelt thanks. Today is the day we applaud and honor donors, leaders, advisors, volunteers and supporters, grantors and fundraisers for their work uniting our community through philanthropy. Although so much is different this year, one thing is constant: Our community still needs access to health care, food and shelter, safety, education, arts and entertainment. All of us have had to quickly pivot to keep up our commitment to our organizations’ missions. You will be inspired by the passion of our 2020 honorees and the remarkable impact they have had in the community. We are, and that’s why we decided that no matter what, we had to find a way to applaud them. Our virtual National Philanthropy Day ensures that their commitment won’t go by unnoticed … even if we can’t be together. We, the Association of Fundraising Professionals Greater Cleveland Chapter (AFPGC), are 300+ nonprofit professionals, fundraisers, volunteer coordinators, event planners. We are the voice of Cleveland’s fundraising community. We support each other to create the change we want to see in the world. Thank you for everything you do. Thank you for supporting AFP and staying connected. Thank you for congratulating our honorees. And next year, we hope to be together.
With much thanks,
Jane Furth National Philanthropy Day 2020 Chair

Uniting Our Community Through Philanthropy
WELCOME Dear Friends: I’ve been privileged to serve as chair of the Greater Cleveland Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals for most of the past two years. During that time I’ve worked with our board, our members and many others here in Cleveland and around the country to promote the mission of AFP. What our 300+ Greater Cleveland chapter members have accomplished in recent years and especially what they’ve done during the COVID-19 crisis is especially remarkable: • Completed a new strategic plan • Strengthened our mentoring program • Created a major new effort around Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access • Reached out to provide AFP membership scholarships to a range of small nonprofits and their fundraisers that otherwise couldn’t afford to be part of AFP • Initiated a study with Case Western Reserve’s Mandel School and funded by the Kelvin and Eleanor Smith Foundation aimed at shaping university-based educational opportunities for fundraising and nonprofit professionals going forward And, in response to the COVID-19 crisis and the strain it’s put on area nonprofits, we’ve: • Initiated a range of new and expanded professional development programs delivered virtually • Offered a range of conferences and new virtual programs through AFP Global • Created a new group of the nine Ohio AFP chapters that is now sharing information and producing joint programming • Provided COVID-19-related resources to help our members do their work as effectively as possible despite the pandemic Most important, our board and National Philanthropy Day Committee grabbed hold of the challenge of deciding how to take our decades-old NPD model and reshape it to fit today. Jane Furth and her committee led the charge to create the first-rate 2020 National Philanthropy Day program: great virtual program; terrific speakers; outstanding group of awardees; generous sponsors and supportive Tribute Book advertisers. As in the past, our members and supporters have come together during difficult times to demonstrate their support of our profession and to demonstrate how area nonprofits, philanthropists, volunteers and fundraisers work together to enhance the quality of life in Greater Cleveland. Thanks to all of you for truly making a difference.
Sincerely, Bob Cahen President, Association of Fundraising Professionals, Greater Cleveland Chapter

DIVERSITY COMMITMENT Dear Friends: I’m a fundraiser. I want to tell you about one way that AFPGreater Cleveland is making a difference in our community and how you can help us have an even larger impact on the Greater Cleveland community. In recent years our chapter committed itself to a vision and strategies aimed at promoting Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access in all aspects of our chapter’s work. As we moved down that road, one piece of that work stood out to us: There are many small yet very effective nonprofit organizations in Cleveland, largely addressing needs of people of color. These organizations, however, do their work with at least one arm tied behind their back. That is, they don’t have the staff and often don’t have the skills to compete for charitable dollars; and they don’t have money to hire staff or train staff to do what we professional fundraisers do. We at AFP-Cleveland thought we’d try to remedy the situation; we thought we’d create a way for these organizations to compete … a way to level the fundraising playing field … and as a result to expand the “good work” these organizations already do. AFP-Cleveland and the United Black Fund of Cleveland created a partnership aimed at providing AFP memberships – which include access to our professional development programs, our mentoring program, our AFP Global conferences and webinars, and especially our networking opportunities - to selected UBF grantees. Initial funding for what we call membership scholarships came from AFP friend and 2017 Outstanding Fundraising Volunteer, Dick Pogue. The program is underway and is already demonstrating that it can make a difference. We want to expand it. At the start of this letter, I noted that I’m a fundraiser. Well, here’s the “ask.” Please consider making a donation to our UBF/AFP Fund so that we can work with these outstanding people representing outstanding organizations to make a difference in our community. If you’d like to help, please contact me at 216-403-6916 or at rcahen@aol.com. I’d be glad to provide you with additional information on this project. Thanks so much for considering helping out these amazing community organizations … and especially making a difference in the lives of the people they serve.

ABOUT AFPGC
The Association of Fundraising Professionals Greater Cleveland Chapter is dedicated to elevating the fundraising profession, providing valuable educational programming to our members, and serving the community by promoting ethical and professional practices in philanthropy. Membership has its privileges is a phrase that’s been used by all kinds of organizations – not-forprofit and for-profit alike – to get people to pay the cost of becoming a member of the particular organization. The essential message of this slogan is that you receive something of value in return for joining. The secondary message is that the value received equals or exceeds the investment. Sometimes, the value can be quantified, but in many cases, the value of membership is more subjective and harder to define. The good news about AFP membership is that many benefits are both objective and easy to define. Here are just a few Member Benefits: • Chapter and National Newsletters • Professional Development & Advancement • Scholarships • Webinars • Mentoring Program • Job Placement and Career Development • Resource Center Learn more and join today at afpcleveland.org/membership

National Philanthropy Day 2020 13
HONOREES Outstanding Philanthropist Leadership Award Jeffrey and Patricia Cole Jeffrey and Patricia Cole’s commitment to the Greater Cleveland community is felt each and every day. The couple’s immense generosity and compassion for people has created the potential to help millions of patients. They continue to work tirelessly to advance care for individuals and their loved ones throughout the health system and other distinguished institutions within the community. For decades Jeffrey has sought to commemorate his family’s commitment to Cleveland Clinic that began in the 1970s when Floyd Loop, M.D., performed open heart surgery on his father and subsequently, provided care of his mother. In appreciation for the care his parents received, Jeffrey facilitated strong support for Cleveland Clinic’s campaign to build a new heart center, which resulted in the construction of the Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Pavilion. Jeffrey and his company are recognized as members of Cleveland Clinic’s Medallion Society for their generous support of this endeavor. In 1999, the Cole Eye Institute was established by Jeffrey Cole and Cole International and ushered in a new era of ophthalmology and vision science. Under Jeffrey’s guidance on the Board of Trustees and the Cole Eye Institute Leadership Board, the program consistently ranks among the top in the nation and continues to expand access to its services in locations across Northeast Ohio. In 2016, Jeffrey’s conviction that the Cole Eye Institute should maintain its premier national position led him and Patricia to commit another transformational gift of $31.2 million for the expansion of the Cole Eye Institute and to support Cleveland Clinic Florida. Their monumental contribution will help to secure the Cole Eye Institute’s future of providing innovative research and eye care through the construction of the Jeffrey and Patricia Cole Building. Jeffrey and Patricia are celebrated as members of Cleveland Clinic’s 1921 Society, the organization’s most prestigious benefactor group, as well as the Pyramid Legacy Society for including the organization in their estate plans. In 2017, the Coles were named as Distinguished Fellows, the organization’s highest lifetime honor, for their leadership and service throughout Ohio and Florida. In 2016, the Coles donated $2.325 million to UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital to establish the Jeffrey and Trisha O’Brien Cole Fund. The fund supports pediatric orthopedics and was made in honor of the outstanding patient care Patricia received at UH Rainbow as a child and teenager. In recognition, UH renamed the performance area the Trisha O’Brien Pavilion, a fitting tribute to her background as a jazz vocalist. Patricia is the co-chair of the annual UH Palm Beach Circle of Friends benefit, which raises money for UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. An accomplished vocalist, Patricia also has lent her talents on several occasions to donor and patient gatherings. The Coles are recognized as members of UH’s Samuel Mather Society, which honors individuals, family foundations, associations, corporations, foundations and organizations whose cumulative, lifetime giving to UH totals $1 million or more. The Cole family’s guidance can also be felt in the corporate and nonprofit communities. Jeffery serves on the boards of Safilo and Hilco. Safilo is based in Padua, Italy, and is the world’s second largest eyeglass frame manufacturer. Hilco, based in Boston, MA, is the world’s largest optical accessories company with operations in North America and Europe. He has volunteered on the boards of The Cleveland Orchestra, Cleveland Ballet and Mount Sinai Hospital, and has been the principal benefactor for the Jack Kerouac Writers in Residence program in Orlando, Fla., since 1998. Jeffrey and Patricia also support FoundCare, a Palm Beach health system which provides pediatric and primary care, chronic disease management and behavioral health services. 14 National Philanthropy Day 2020

HONOREES Corporate Leadership Award Giant Eagle For the past 24 years, Giant Eagle has been a valued and long-standing partner of the Greater Cleveland Food Bank (GCFB). Their partnership and corporate leadership demonstrates a dedicated commitment to the greater Cleveland community and continues to grow and evolve in order to best serve food insecure individuals throughout Northeast Ohio. Giant Eagle’s investment is evident through their multi-faceted approach that provides critical support and resources through financial contributions, board participation, event sponsorship, extensive in-kind donations and a point of sale campaign to engage their customers and the community. Currently, 83 Giant Eagle stores participate in the GCFB’s Harvest for Hunger campaign throughout Northeast Ohio every spring. This unique initiative is one of the largest of its kind in the nation that, in 2019, raised enough food and funds to help provide 22 million meals. These efforts provide opportunities to encourage the community to participate through a point of sale campaign, Check Out Hunger, where customers can donate to their local Food Bank when checking out at the store. This key fundraising initiative helps to raise critical funds and bring about increased community awareness. In spite of the tremendous efforts grocery stores are currently putting forth to best serve their customers during the COVID-19 pandemic, Giant Eagle has remained committed to continue their campaign and have even decided to extend their campaign well beyond its traditional six-week duration. Anthony Rego, Vice Chairman of Giant Eagle, has served on the Board of the GCFB for more than 17 years. Anthony also serves on the GCFB Executive Committee and Capital Advisory Committee. His dedication and guidance over these many years has helped the GCFB improve upon warehouse and distribution logistics, expand their network of connections and institute valuable best practices. Giant Eagle’s dedicated resources provide a tremendous impact through their financial and in-kind support. This includes matching gift opportunities among staff and leaders, Harvest for Hunger proceeds, sponsorship support and other corporate fundraising efforts. Since 1997, Giant Eagle has contributed more than $12.4 million in support of food insecurity in Northeast Ohio and they have been able to provide more than 49.6 million meals from Check Out Hunger. In a time of great uncertainty for the community and local businesses, Giant Eagle has grown its commitment to individuals struggling with food insecurity and those organizations working to support them during the COVID-19 pandemic.

HONOREES Foundation Leadership Award Deaconess Foundation (Deborah Vesy) Deaconess Foundation has consistently been at the forefront of workforce development in Cuyahoga County. They go beyond monetary resources by utilizing their own workforce’s problemsolving skills and leadership qualities to create innovative new approaches to attaining their mission. Under the direction of Deborah Vesy, the foundation has grown into a county leader in workforce development funding and best practices. Since 1997, the Deaconess Foundation has operated in Cuyahoga County with a concentration on funding self-sufficiency programs. In 2013, the Foundation realigned its funding model toward supporting a wider range of employment programs. In the 2019 funding cycle, these organizations were supported: University Hospitals; The Center for Families and Children; Open Doors Academy; The Salvation Army of Greater Cleveland; Youth Opportunities Unlimited; Fund for Our Economic Future; City Club of Cleveland; Towards Employment; Jumpstart, Inc.; College Now Greater Cleveland; Boys & Girls Club of Northeast Ohio; MagnetOverall. Their investment in the community was over $1 million. The common theme in all of the supported programs is to eliminate the underlying drivers of poverty by creating new financial opportunities through education, training and counseling. In 2019, the Group launched a program called Workforce Connect. This expansion created an intermediary platform for employers to showcase their current openings in skill-based positions. The first identified fields were manufacturing, healthcare and information technology. Bringing these employers to the table allows them to share their needs and gives residents a chance to see the opportunities available to get on career pathways with family-sustaining wages. Following a year of meetings and strategy sessions, Deaconess Foundation awarded University Hospitals (UH) a three-year grant of $215,364 to establish the Pathway Coach Initiative. UH was one of the first recipients of a multi-year grant, as well as one of the first to be considered despite their status as a hospital. The foundation staff worked very closely with UH to conceive the Pathway Coach position to support and empower entry-level staff to succeed and advance within the system. The foundation was integral to developing the concept into an effective program. The Pathway Coach Initiative created a structured coaching program with the directive to inspire professional growth among low skilled workers within the organization. Focusing initially on non-degreed, noncredentialed staff earning less than $15/hr at UH Cleveland Medical Center, the Pathway Coach delivers coaching, workshops, and individual instruction to eligible staff. The Pathway Coach program has been an inspiring success and would not have been possible without Deaconess Foundation’s commitment and vision for workforce development. Current data shows that 65% of the individuals who have gone through the program have secured new roles and promotions at UH. Deaconess Foundation also has a long partnership with the United Church of Christ. Prior to the formation of the foundation, the Deaconess Hospital operated for 71 years in the Old Brooklyn area of Downtown Cleveland. The foundation’s initial funds were from the sale of the institution. Today, the Deaconess Foundation motivates the religious community members of the United Church of Christ through the Mission Outreach Fund to create projects to benefit the most vulnerable and disadvantaged. 18 National Philanthropy Day 2020

HONOREES Outstanding Fundraising Volunteer Award Jill Harrington Jill Harrington epitomizes what it means to be an outstanding fundraising volunteer. Over the last decade, she has tirelessly devoted her time and talents to a number of organizations throughout Northeast Ohio. From her exhaustive work chairing gala benefits, to her board service, fundraising travel and solicitation of sponsors and potential donors, there is nothing Jill hasn’t done to improve the lives of children. In addition to her family’s incredible philanthropy, Jill is a passionate, hands-on volunteer for UH Rainbow. A prime example of her outstanding fundraising volunteer service is her time as 2016 co-chair of the immensely successful Ride the Rainbow benefit. Through innumerable face-to-face solicitations, phone calls, letters and emails, she connected with hundreds of community leaders and philanthropists to secure their support. Her extraordinary work paid off, as Ride the Rainbow raised $1.5 million, the most in its history. Jill is not one to sit on the sidelines. She has hosted donor events at her home, traveled in support of UH Rainbow and is a tireless advocate for the health system in the community. While vice president of the Rainbow Foundation overseeing development, she led every aspect of fundraising. This involved coordinating events including the Children’s Miracle Network campaign, dozens of Circle of Friends events and countless others. Her exceptional leadership exceeded all expectations. It’s safe to say Jill has single-handedly raised millions of dollars for the children of Northeast Ohio. At Lawrence School, the only K-12 school in northeast Ohio serving children with learning differences, Jill is a philanthropic leader, initiating support at every opportunity. Her heart for children is evident in her work there. Jill serves on the Board of Trustees and tirelessly commits herself to support the mission of the school. She helped organize the school’s annual fundraiser, Bloom, which raised over $500,000 thanks to her enthusiasm and support. Her deep commitment to children and families is evident in her every action. When looking for opportunities to raise funds in her own community of Hudson, Ohio, Jill created her own Rainbow Circle of Friends and organized a night of entertainment and camaraderie. The Howl in Hudson Circle of Friends benefit was Jill’s vision from conception to execution. She recruited a volunteer committee, handled all sponsorship fundraising, executed the event and raised $50,000 from the sellout crowd of more than 100 people. Over the years, Jill and the Harrington family have contributed philanthropically to a number of other Cleveland organizations including The Gathering Place, Cleveland Botanical Gardens and Western Reserve Academy. The Harrington family are co-founders of The Gathering Place and Jill has been involved in that organization since day one. Jill and the Harrington family have also been deeply involved philanthropically with Old Trail Schools and were nominated by the school in 2010 as the AFP Outstanding Philanthropist, which they won. They have also supported Fieldstone Farm Therapeutic Riding Center, the Akron Food Bank and New Directions. She truly immerses herself in the needs of the organizations she supports and serves as an inspiration for the next generation of philanthropists across Northeast Ohio. Her passion for fundraising and for serving as a strong, impactful volunteer leader comes through in everything she does. She is a fundraising volunteer without equal in the Cleveland community. 20 National Philanthropy Day 2020

BLESSING OF PEACE
Planned or deferred gifts to Malachi House are one of the most important ways you can help us build our endowment to ensure our home will always be there in perpetuity for those who need us most, when they need us most. It is difficult to see our residents come to Malachi House in their terminal state, many times with fear and confusion in their eyes. As the days and weeks go by, it is truly a blessing to witness their transformation as they smile, enjoy home cooked meals, feel a sense of family and engage with volunteers, hospice teams, staff and board members. The peace they ultimately experience is a result of the loving care they receive. Won’t you consider being a part of that peace?

HONOREES Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy Award Elisabeth Lendal Avon Lake High School Junior Elisabeth Lendal is committed to giving back to her community and is a role model for youth who want to make a philanthropic impact in Northeast Ohio. In her high school career, she has developed an impressive resume of defining opportunities to address problems and enlisting broad-based community participation in providing solutions for people in need. Elisabeth has provided unwavering service and philanthropic support to the nonprofit organization Avon Lake Community Resource Service (CRS). In recognition of her outstanding commitment, she was elected as the youngest board member of the CRS Board of Directors. In the last year alone, she has helped organize and support several fundraising events for CRS, from their largest fundraiser the Pearl Gala, which raised over $75,000, to several local races (Homeruns for Hunger), and a food collection event (SOUPer Bowl). Elisabeth was recognized for her ongoing commitment to the community by the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio in May 2019 when she was awarded the “Leader of Tomorrow Scholarship Award.” In September 2020, the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW Lorain County Section) honored a single teenager in the community, Elisabeth, with a Trailblazer’s Award for her perseverance in improving the lives of families in her community. In addition to recruiting volunteers for numerous fundraising events, she has also promoted the importance of graduating high school with a volunteer background and to that end has helped several students with volunteer involvement. In March 2020, when the Coronavirus hit the community, Elisabeth gathered the troops and reached out to family and friends for help. She called, emailed, and texted as many people as she could and within three days, she had collected enough money to donate over 450 hygiene products (soap, body wash, shampoos, etc.) and cleaning products to help CRS clients fight off this pandemic. Besides her school involvement in Student Council, French Honor Society, Honor Society, and Pep Club, she is also involved in her Girl Scout Troop and has participated in two 10-day mission trips with her youth group where she helped build, roof, and paint houses in Maine and New Orleans. Academic success has never come easily to Elisabeth. Aside from learning to cope with dyslexia, this young lady has also had to overcome the challenge of learning a new language as a youngster. Hard work is the norm for this junior. She applies her acquired skills of hard work and dedication to achieve success in all facets of her life, including leading others in doing good works for the community. In her day-to-day student and athletic life, Elisabeth shines as a role model and leader both on and off the field and court. Both a Varsity Lacrosse and Tennis player, she was recently selected as a student representative for the SWC leadership conference (January 2020) for her leadership skills and all-around sportsmanship. She is now also the lacrosse team captain and has earned several gold medals during her tennis season as a junior.

Over the course of his 15-plus year tenure at UH, Ryan has helped to inspire gifts of more than $200 million to University Hospitals. In 2010, Ryan led UH’s $1.5 billion Discover the Difference campaign. This entailed working closely with UH senior leaders, the campaign cabinet and volunteer advisors. In addition to his leadership with key stakeholders, Ryan personally facilitated transformational gifts from the Fowler family, Barbara Ruhlman and Rainbow Babies & Children’s Foundation. At the time, the gift from the Rainbow Foundation was the single largest gift received by UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. Since the completion of Discover the Difference, Ryan has secured several substantial gifts that will benefit vital capital and programmatic improvements at UH. In 2018, Ryan’s mother, Mary Ann, lost her decades-long battle with cancer. His mother’s exceptional care inspired him to organize an event to benefit the advancement of treatments at UH Seidman Cancer Center. In September 2019, Cross Out Cancer was held at the Shoreby Club in Bratenahl. Ryan was involved with every stage of the process and he crafted a memorable night that involved hundreds in the mission of overcoming cancer. The fundraiser sold out and was filled with many of Cleveland’s most notable names in philanthropy and business. In total, over $200,000 was raised to help grow the immunotherapy cancer program at UH, which is one of the industry’s leading new developments in oncology. Ryan began his career at Case Western Reserve University. He quickly rose through the ranks to Director while fundraising for the College of Engineering, focusing on alumni and external relations. His next position, before joining UH, was the Director of Development for the Taussig Cancer Center at the Cleveland Clinic. His contributions early in his profession were recognized in 2009 when he was named to Crain’s “Forty Under 40.” In every new chapter of his professional growth, Ryan has surpassed expectations and led his colleagues in supporting the charitable mission of the institution. As a longtime member of the Association for Fundraising Professionals, Ryan has continuously gone above and beyond his own work to support community organizations. Outside of health care, he tries to focus his free time on supporting arts and education-based entities. Ryan currently sits on the boards of several Cleveland organizations: Baldwin Wallace University; The Cleveland Playhouse; Cleveland Ballet; Gordon Square Arts District. Due to his own personal generous giving, Ryan is also a member of University Hospitals’ Diamond Legacy Society and the Society of 1866. Ryan has accomplished much on behalf of the Greater Cleveland community and his dedication to the fundraising profession is unmatched. 24 National Philanthropy Day 2020

SIGNATURE DRINKS Sapphire Martini: a Delightful Blue Gin Cocktail
from The Spruce Eats
Total: 3 mins Prep: 3mins Cook: 0 mins Serving: 1 serving The sapphire martini is an absolute delight, adding a little color and orange flavor to your classic gin martini. It is a nice way to up your martini routine and the blue color is a fabulous addition to any affair. The color of the sapphire martini comes from the use of blue curacao. It is an orange-flavored liqueur that has a beautiful blue hue which we find so useful when making cocktails.
S&C Design Studios
Like the diamond martini, one of the characteristics of this cocktail is that the gin and cocktail glass are both “frozen” and no ice is used while mixing. Since gin cannot actually freeze, this simply means that you’ll place the bottle in the freezer for a while until it is nice and cold.
Ingredients
2 ounces gin (Bombay Sapphire or other premium gin, frozen) 2 dashes dry vermouth 2 dashes blue curacao Garnish: lemon twist
Steps to Make It 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Chill a cocktail glass. Add a couple of dashes each of dry vermouth and blue curacao to the glass. Pour in the gin. Garnish with the lemon twist. If you like, stir the ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice and strain it into the frozen glass.
