On the cover: Clevelanders gather with their “stronger than hate” signs at

the “No Hate. No Fear.” march and rally Jan. 5, 2020, in New York City. The Jewish Federation of Cleveland worked quickly to plan a bus trip to bring Northeast Ohioans to the event, which drew an estimated 25,000 people who gathered at Foley Square and walked to the Brooklyn Bridge by way of Broadway, gathering at Cadman Plaza in Brooklyn for a rally that opened and closed with music by the Maccabeats and featured more than a dozen speakers. The march aimed to take a stand against anti-Semitism amid surging anti-Semitic violence across the country. To read the CJN’s coverage of the “No Hate. We’re glad we’re here. When Don and Dottie Kuhn started searching for a place to enjoy their senior years, one option stood out. With its 5-star health care, a venerable history, and not-for-profit status, Judson Park offered everything the couple was looking for.

“Judson has a good, long reputation in the community. They have really invested in their programs. There is always something interesting and engaging to do,” says Don. The Kuhns also sought out the best in care. “I’m retired from Cleveland Clinic, and Dottie is retired from University Hospitals. We are used to being well taken care of – and we knew we would be at Judson.” “After all these years we can truly say, Judson was absolutely the right decision,” says Dottie.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE

A network of kindness can topple hate

T

his past year undoubtedly has been one none of us will ever forget. As we all know, the world is a vastly different place than it was just one year ago, with new distances, worries and social injustices brought to light. As community storytellers at the Cleveland Jewish News, we report on the wealth of happenings in our community and bring to light issues here and beyond. One vivid example of advocacy is depicted on our SOURCE 2021 cover. About two months before we had any idea of the changes and challenges our community would soon face, CJN Staff Reporter Jane Kaufman joined the Jewish Federation of Cleveland and about 115 Northeast Ohioans on an overnight bus trip to New York City. The trip was made for the “No Hate. No Fear.” march and rally, which drew an estimated 25,000 people. The Jan. 5, 2020, event aimed to invoke unity amid a wave of anti-Semitic violence across the country. Although we didn’t know it then, in coming months the fight against hate would need to intensify. While the Jewish community is accustomed to dealing with discrimination and hate, the events of this year – affecting our community, people of color and other exploited groups – show there is so much more work ahead. The battle against systemic racism is one Black Americans have been fighting for centuries, and somehow in 2021, we are only beginning to turn a new corner in aiding with that fight. While Jews played a key role in the civil rights movement, today many of us still fail to see the diversity represented by Jews here and throughout the world. Anti-Semitism also continues. For example, when some Ohioans didn’t support the state orders issued to protect residents from the COVID-19 pandemic by former Ohio Department of Health director Dr. Amy Acton, they took to protesting outside her home with anti-Semitic signs and undertones. Yet, I have to remain hopeful that change and the long overdue reconciling with our society’s history of discrimination, as well as the end to the pandemic, are beginning. As I write this column, vaccines against COVID-19 have just arrived, offering a reason for optimism and hope. Amid this tenuous time, there are also examples of chesed, the Hebrew word for compassion or kindness. After Acton stepped down from her state role, she went on to become director of Kind Columbus at The Columbus Foundation, where she works to spread kindness. Kindland, an initiative led by the Values-in-Action Foundation, aims to promote kindness through actions and advocacy. The CJN is a foundational partner of Kindland and you can take

the #Kindland #JustBeKind pledge and share your acts of kindness across social media. Amid persistent needs and challenges, let’s pray those efforts help reduce hate, prejudice and discrimination in our world. To that end, the organizations, institutions and businesses in SOURCE – our guide to Jewish living in Cleveland – demonstrate the strong network of support we have. To help you remain connected with Jewish and secular organizations doing good and providing services, SOURCE functions as a directory to look to when you realize you need something, or perhaps want to give somewhere, but aren’t sure where. This year especially, it’s essential to recognize those working toward kindness and change, as well as the significant work we have left. And as we speak of doing good, recognition and change, be sure to turn to pages 72 and 73, for a look back at the 2020 CJN 18 Difference Makers and 12 Under 36: Members of the Tribe. The 30 individuals honored by the CJN truly exemplify agents of change we seek in our community, through the efforts they each put forth in repairing the world in which we live. May the year 2021 bring you kindness, safety and peace.

Designer Accents at Home

esigner Accents at Home is a locally owned Hunter Douglas Gallery selling custom window blinds, shades, shutters and drapery to transform the light in your home. Our convenient showroom has one of the widest selections in the area. We realize many of you have been staying home, doing work on your home and notice your window treatments are dated. We are here to help. Once you enter the showroom, the options are endless. Our window treatments offer multiple ways to raise and lower the blinds, including automation. Each product also has countless fabric options. No matter what your style, we have the right product for your home. Today many might say, Alexa and Siri are our best friends. We talk to our phones or our smart home systems to start our cars, turn on our lights, play our favorite music and more. Why not control your blinds with your voice, or a touch of a button? Hunter Douglas PowerView Automation gives you precise and convenient control of your Hunter Douglas window treatments. Shades operate independently, moving only when you choose to schedule them. Not only does an updated window treatment look good in your home, but it can also make your home more energy efficient. Most of your home’s heat loss is through your windows. During a gray Cleveland winter, many of us prefer to close our window coverings blocking out the snow! But if you raise those shades up, leave them open and let the winter sunshine and warmth inside, not only are you allowing natural light in your home, but you will also save on your heating costs. The opposite is true in the summer. While you are outside enjoying a beautiful Cleveland summer day, close your shades and block out the sunshine. Your air conditioning will run a little less and your home will use less energy. Did you go out for the day and forget to close your blinds? Using the Hunter Douglas app on your phone, you can close your motorized window treatments and still have the benefits of energy savings. Designer Accents understands what looks good online or in our showroom might not look best in your home, so an SILHOUETTE WINDOW WINDOW SHADINGS SHADINGS SILHOUETTE experienced knowledgeable designer will come to your home SILHOUETTE WINDOW SHADINGS to measure and help you select the right product and fabric. 2021 HOLIDAYS

JEWISH HOLIDAYS and noteworthy dates TU B’SHEVAT Thursday, Jan. 28

Tu b’Shevat, the 15th of Shevat on the Jewish calendar, is the day that marks the beginning of a “new year” for trees. This is the season in which the earliest-blooming trees in the Land of Israel emerge from their winter sleep and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle. We mark the day of Tu b’Shevat by eating fruit, particularly the kinds singled out by the Torah in its praise of the bounty of the Holy Land: grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and dates. On this day, we remember that “man is a tree of the field” (Deuteronomy 20:19) and reflect on the lessons we can derive from our botanical analogue.

PURIM

Thursday, Feb. 25 (begins at sunset) Friday, Feb. 26 (ends at nightfall) The jolly festival of Purim is celebrated every year on the 14th of the Hebrew month of Adar (late winter/early spring). It commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia from Haman’s plot “to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day,” as recorded in the Megillah (book of Esther).

PASSOVER

Saturday, March 27 (begins at sunset) Sunday, April 4 (ends at nightfall) The eight-day festival of Passover is celebrated in the early spring, from the 15th through the 22nd of the Hebrew month of Nissan. It commemorates the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. By following the rituals of Passover, we have the ability to relive and experience the true freedom that our ancestors gained.

YOM HASHOAH

YOM HAZIKARON

Wednesday, April 7 (begins at sunset) Thursday, April 8 (ends at nightfall) Holocaust Remembrance Day

SHAVUOT Sunday, May 16 (begins at sunset) Tuesday, May 18 (ends at nightfall) Shavuot coincides with the date that God gave the Torah to the Jewish people at Mount Sinai more than 3,300 years ago. It comes after 49 days of eager counting, as we prepared ourselves for this special day. It is celebrated by lighting candles, staying up all night to learn Torah, hearing the reading of the Ten Commandments in synagogue, feasting on dairy foods and more.

2021 HOLIDAYS TISHA B’AV

Saturday, July 17 (begins at sunset) Sunday, July 18 (ends at nightfall) The Three Weeks is an annual mourning period that falls in the summer during which we do not cut our hair, purchase new clothes, listen to music or hold weddings. It reaches its climax and concludes with the fast of the ninth of Av, the date when both Holy Temples were set aflame. This is the saddest day of the Jewish calendar, and it is also the date that many other tragedies befell our people. The fast of Tisha b’Av begins at sunset the previous evening. Besides fasting, we abstain from additional pleasures: washing, applying lotions or creams, wearing leather shoes and marital relations. Until midday, we sit on the floor or on low stools.

ROSH HASHANAH

Monday, Sept. 6 (begins at sunset) Wednesday, Sept. 8 (ends at nightfall) Rosh Hashanah is the birthday of the universe, the day G‑d created Adam and Eve, and it’s celebrated as the head of the Jewish year. It’s celebrated with candlelighting in the evenings, festive meals with sweet delicacies during the night and day, prayer services that include the sounding of the ram’s horn (shofar) on both mornings and desisting from creative work.

YOM KIPPUR

Wednesday, Sept. 15 (begins at sunset) Thursday, Sept. 16 (ends at nightfall) Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year – the day on which we are closest to God and to the quintessence of our own souls. It is the Day of Atonement – “For on this day He will forgive you, to purify you, that you be cleansed from all your sins before God” (Leviticus 16:30). For nearly 26 hours – from several minutes before sunset on 9 Tishrei to after nightfall on 10 Tishrei – we “afflict our souls,” or abstain from food and drink, do not wash or anoint our bodies, do not wear leather footwear and abstain from marital relations.

SUKKOT

Monday, Sept. 20 (begins at sunset) Monday, Sept. 27 (ends at nightfall) For 40 years, as our ancestors traversed the Sinai Desert, following the Exodus from Egypt, miraculous “clouds of glory” surrounded and hovered over them, shielding them from the dangers and discomforts of the desert. Ever since, we remember God’s kindness and reaffirm our trust in His providence by dwelling in a sukkah – a hut of temporary construction with a roof covering of branches – for the duration of the Sukkot festival (on the Jewish calendar Tishrei 15-21). For seven days and nights, we eat all our meals in the sukkah and otherwise regard it as our home.

SIMCHAT TORAH

Monday, Sept. 27 (begins at sunset) Wednesday, Sept. 29, (ends at nightfall) The holiday of Sukkot is followed by an independent holiday called Shemini Atzeret. In Israel, this is a one-day holiday; in the Diaspora, it is a two-day holiday, and the second day is known as Simchat Torah. This holiday is characterized by utterly unbridled joy, which surpasses even the joy of Sukkot. The joy reaches its climax on Simchat Torah, when we celebrate the conclusion – and restart – of the annual Torah-reading cycle.

CHANUKAH

Sunday, Nov. 28 (begins at sunset) Monday, Dec. 6 (ends at nightfall) Chanukah is the Jewish eight-day, wintertime “festival of lights,” celebrated with a nightly menorah lighting, special prayers and fried foods. At the heart of the festival is the nightly menorah lighting. The menorah holds nine flames, one of which is the shamash (“attendant”), which is used to kindle the other eight lights. On the first night, we light just one flame. On the second night, an additional flame is lit. By the eighth night of Chanukah, all eight lights are kindled. Special blessings are recited, often to a traditional melody, before the menorah is lit, and traditional songs are sung afterward.
