Glow on Your Dream Day with Non-Invasive Facial Treatments Your wedding is coming up and you have considered every detail in your planning. Of all the sights they will admire that day, none will receive more attention than your face as you look with joy at your partner and all those you love. The weeks leading up to your wedding are the ideal time to perfect your facial appearance by realizing the benefits of non-invasive therapies performed under the guidance of internationally renowned plastic surgeon, Dr. Bahman Guyuron. Through non-surgical methods that deliver almost immediate results and require minimal recovery time, Dr. Guyuron’s team can help you achieve the flawless wedding day Bahman Guyuron, MD look you desire. Skin Care Products Zeeba Clinic aesthetician, Shawn Guyuron who is endowed with unparalleled artistic vision and capabilities, can help you to prepare yourself for the big day to produce healthy and vibrant skin. Shawn knows the face and can advise you how to use make up to highlight the most attractive parts of your face. The skin products that she offers not only will improve your skin for your wedding they will halt the aging with continued use. Non-surgical Facial Enhancement For brides-to-be and family, facial enhancement is delivered using dermal fillers and injectables that can soften the face, producing an even more youthful, vibrant look. Volume increase in the thin lips can be achieved with these fillers as well to make the lips more luscious. Dermal fillers are used to fill both surface or deep lines and wrinkles, some of which appear in younger age, and reverse the signs of early aging. Filler used to treat areas such as cheeks that are beginning to sink, to add volume to lips and to eradicate depressions and scars in the skin from old acne. Injectable products, such as Botox, are used to relax facial muscles, effectively smoothing and reducing the appearance of early minor folds, including frown lines, crow’s feet and creases in the forehead, that become more discernable because of stress related to the big event. Some dermal fillers even trigger the body’s natural production of collagen, which improves the quality of the skin over time. The advantages of non-surgical facial enhancement for the brides and rejuvenation for the older family members are significant and include the following:

• Treatments can be administered in the physician’s office • Results are almost immediate • Recovery time is minimal • Methods are very safe, with a low risk of side effects and allergic reaction • Anesthesia is topical or often not required Skin Resurfacing Skin resurfacing is another option favored by brides for improving the tone and texture of their skin to realize a more youthful appearance and reduce the acne or other scars. This approach involves removing the outer layer of damaged or discolored skin to reveal the fresh, healthy skin beneath with a natural glow. Dr. Guyuron has state of the art laser devices for a variety of purposes. For those who have more time to prepare for their nuptials, ProFractional and Broadband Light (BBL) laser therapy offers a deeper, more targeted treatment option for delivering smoother skin with few flaws and improved elasticity. Benefits of laser skin resurfacing include the following: • Recovery can be short, the ill effects disappearing 2 to 10 days after treatment depending on the type of laser used • Lighter lasers require only a two-day recovery period • Lasers stimulate the body’s natural collagen, which is essential to healthy skin Fat Injection Fat injection has become the most valuable means of strategically and tastefully adding volume to the face to replenish the volume in certain parts of the face that starts diminishing in early age or by adding some volume in the cheek or chin to enhance the existing beauty. Additionally, fat contains stem cells which can maintain or reestablish the natural vibrancy in the face. Your dream day will soon be here. To learn more about non-invasive therapies that will make you glow your brightest, schedule a consultation with Dr. Guyuron and his team by calling Zeeba Clinic at 440-461-7999 or by visiting his website at drbahmanguyuron.com.

Something in the CJPC water

s you page through this fall issue of Jstyle Weddings, you might find it interesting to know that two Cleveland Jewish Publication Company staffers are currently engaged (not to each other) and planning their respective weddings – with a little extra help from the magazine you’re holding. One, a CJPC designer, has been with his girlfriend-turnedfiancee since 2012. They got engaged in July 2017 and have a wedding planned for this November. Their wedding will be held in North Royalton and their reception in Lakewood. The other, a writer here at the CJPC, got engaged to his girlfriend in April and has been dating her since December 2015. Their wedding is planned for June 2019 in Cleveland and their reception will be held in Westlake. Though my colleagues have the benefit of preparing for their weddings (at least a little bit) by way of contributing to the production of Jstyle Weddings, I think it’s safe to say they’d be turning to it as a valuable resource even if that wasn’t the case. After all, where else can you go to find so much great advice

President & CEO Kevin S. Adelstein

and insightful information from so many local experts? In this issue alone, we check in with wedding gown gurus, makeup maestros, cake and catering connoisseurs, planning professionals and venueselection virtuosos, among others. And new this issue: We talk to a few local purveyors of chuppot to see what’s trending. Also, if you’re keeping track, this is the second year we’ve done a fall issue of Jstyle Weddings – and it’s grown since the inaugural issue last year. In fact, this year we have an additional wedding spotlight – regularly one of the most popular elements of the magazine – for a total of four spotlights. We certainly love to showcase these beautiful local ceremonies issue after issue, and we hope you enjoy seeing them – and

drawing inspiration from them – as much as we do. As a friendly reminder, if you’re interested in having your wedding considered for a Jstyle Weddings spotlight, fill out the online form and provide us with a few wedding day images at cjn.org/jstyleweddings. (And don’t worry, CJPC employees are ineligible, so your wedding won’t have to compete with my colleagues’ weddings.) By connecting you to all of these resources, and by sharing with you so many wonderful local weddings, we hope to spark your creativity, to inspire your selections, and ultimately, to help make the process of planning and preparing for your wedding as smooth as possible. Just like we want our co-workers to enjoy their big days, we hope all of you, your family or your friends do, too, and we’re happy that Jstyle Weddings can help.

PLANNING

Blueprint for wedded bliss Planning is paramount to ensuring your wedding is as stress-free as can be By Ed Carroll

P

lanning a wedding is stressful. There are a lot of moving parts to track, such as the venue, photographer, food and even a limo driver – and the budget that connects them all. Having a plan in place can help keep costs from spiraling, but who’s there to ensure busy couples stick to the plan? That’s where a wedding planner – someone who can keep track of even the smallest details to make sure nothing slips through the cracks – can step in and ease the burden for brides and grooms, allowing them to enjoy their big day.

Emily Millay Fine Art Photography / Kirkbrides Wedding Planning & Design

Luckily, Northeast Ohio is home to plenty of top wedding professionals who can help couples navigate the demands and stress of planning a wedding. Kim Singerman from Noteworthy Events, LLC in Solon and Valerie Kirkbride Falvey from Kirkbrides Wedding Planning & Design in Mentor – both authorities on wedding preparation – share their advice for how to start planning while avoiding ceremony-related stress.

Budget your resources Once the couple is engaged and begins the planning process, Falvey says it’s best they “get started off on the right foot.” “The thing that we see people do that causes problems later is not having a clear picture of what they want and what their parameters are from the very beginning – and it spirals out of control from there,” she says. “You need to budget a realistic budget, not just a number you have in your head.” For Singerman, organization is key. “I think that people need to read their contracts; they need to stay on top of what they’re planning as opposed to putting it off for a later date because that’s when things become stressful,” Singerman says, adding it’s important for couples to designate someone to be in charge of the information and contracts from vendors, be it the bride, groom, mother of the bride or someone else. 14

PLANNING

Falvey

Singerman

Both Falvey and Singerman agree a budget is one of the first things a couple needs to set before moving forward. Singerman says the budget and a rough guest list need to come first. “One of the first things I tell people is they need to have a budget,” she says. “Sometimes people will say to me, ‘Well, we really haven’t done that yet.’You need to have a budget and guest list, because the list will control your budget. Every guest has a dollar sign attached (to them) and that dollar sign represents the meal, invitations, centerpieces – every aspect of the wedding.”

“(Stress) happens, but it’s also how you deal with it,” she says. “Many times, I have to talk my wedding clients off a ledge (due to stress). After we talk, they say they feel so much better. Sometimes people just need someone to explain what they think may be a big deal isn’t such a big deal. I tend to give my clients shorter task lists as the process develops. In the beginning, we might establish a budget and guest list, then move to a band, DJ and photographer, then a floral designer and videographer, if they need one.” Falvey says a lot of stress can be avoided if couples make a decision and then stick to it. “A lot of wedding planning stress comes from the issue of decision-making. So, how comfortable are you with making decisions and sticking with them and being confident in the decision you’ve made?” she says. “A lot of stress comes from people who are changing their minds about things that have already been decided. In the last few weeks (leading up to a wedding), people try to add on a bunch of things that aren’t really necessary. My biggest advice to people in terms of doing what you can to control your comfort level is to stick with your decisions. Once you’ve made them, leave them in place, because once you start changing things, it confuses everyone.” jsw

Stick to your choices As couples get deeper into the planning process, they likely will realize they need to compromise on their initial vision, be it due to logistics, budget or family politics. Falvey says couples need to realize it’s OK if a wedding isn’t exactly the way they plan it. “One thing we see people stress over is they’re worried that something isn’t exactly what they want from the beginning, like a floral proposal,” she says. “It’s why we sometimes say this is ‘wedding planning’ and not ‘wedding decision-making.’ There’s a process to go through. Just stay calm and communicate what you want and what changes (need to be made), and we can get it to what you need.” Singerman says wedding stress, while it can be unpleasant, is normal. 16

The best moment of our wedding was when the rabbi asked us to turn around during the ceremony and look around. Seeing all of the people who loved us the most in one room was an incredibly special moment for us. To start, dress yourself in a simple, sleek gown. Think Meghan Markle’s wedding day style (whether her first dress or her second) and use modern jewelry to complement the clean look of your gown. Add your handsome groom to the mix by putting him on a navy or brighter blue suit to complete your wedding day look. Your bridal party will look the part in long dresses that are classic and structured in a color to match your palette.

Beaming brides By Becky Raspe Whether the look you’re going for is clean and simple or bold and beautiful – or somewhere in between – your makeup artist can help you choose the mix that best suits you. Bridal trends this season cover a wide range of options, from the “no-makeup” makeup look to the full-face, heavily highlighted look, say the professionals at Lavish Color Salon in Warrensville Heights and The Powder Room Makeup Oasis & Boutique in Woodmere. Quintana’s Barber & Dream Spa

Though it’s fine to go with the flow, it’s important to know the latest trends before committing to a hairstyle. No one wants to appear outdated when looking back on their big day. The owners of Quintana’s Barber & Dream Spa in Cleveland Heights and j. bellezza salon in Orange say brides and grooms alike should think sleek looks as well as purposefully placed products and accessories to stay fresh for this season’s ceremonies.

We’re seeing a lot of shorter, more aggressively short haircuts, specifically on the sides. It’s still a basic barber-type fade, but we’re not doing hard parts as much as we did before. Also, beards are big, whether it’s a full beard or otherwise.

– Alex Quintana, owner, Quintana’s Barber & Dream Spa

Styled, long-on-top haircut with trimmed beard We’re using a lot of Aveda products, like the Control Paste, specifically on dry hair. The Grooming Clay has also been big here, especially for a textured style. The Aveda Composition Oil helps us smooth down beards and shape them better.

Sweet memories By Becky Raspe & Marissa Nichol Whether you opt for the traditional wedding cake or expand your options to include other sweet treats, one thing is for sure: timehonored themes are dominating the wedding dessert market. Baking specialists at Luna Bakery & Cafe in Cleveland Heights and Moreland Hills, White Flower Cake Shoppe in Beachwood and Solon, and Cake Bites & Other Delights in Akron, say couples this season are choosing classic treats with personalized twists.

Popular requests from us are elegant, simple and timeless designs, which are more traditional, but we also get couples that are looking for a cake that is unique to them, which we love. Some trends we are seeing are couples being more adventurous and adding a pop of color or metallic. – Annalisa DiGiantonio, lead cake designer/decorator, Luna Bakery & Cafe

Naked cakes or the unfrosted cakes trend is dying down. Fresh fruit is being replaced with decadent fillings, like salted caramel or hazelnut. Fondant cakes are also being less requested. – Marianne Carroll, co-owner, White Flower Cake Shoppe 56

We have found that a dessert bar is becoming increasingly popular – sometimes with a small wedding cake, for cutting purposes, and sometimes without. It is fun for guests to be able to choose a couple of itty bitty desserts in varying flavors because usually everyone can find something they like. Customization is all the rage, too. – Natalie Winer, co-owner, Cake Bites & Other Delights

Buttercream cakes and flowers are definitely going strong. Brides are also loving the trend where the cake matches their dress. Cupcake weddings are also popular since this option allows for more fun flavor combinations and options for guests. – Marianne Carroll, co-owner, White Flower Cake Shoppe

A dessert bar adds to the entertainment aspect of the event. Guests are not just sitting in their seats waiting for a piece of wedding cake to be brought to them. They can walk over to the dessert bar, look at the beautiful layout, find what treat they would like and take it back to their table. It gets the non-dancing guests out of their seats. CATERING

Fancying food By Ed Carroll and Marissa Nichol Weddings are joyous occasions at which those in attendance celebrate the love of a special couple. However, wedding guests can’t eat that couple’s special love, so they usually expect to be fed, too. For those who are planning their wedding but are unsure of how to approach the catering aspect, experts from Zack Bruell Events in Cleveland, Executive Caterers in Mayfield Heights and Spice Catering Co. in Cleveland shared what they’re noticing is popular at weddings across Northeast Ohio.

We create a custom experience. Couples are designing their menus and event spaces with items and themes that represent their roots and personalities. We see requests for small-batch microbrews, doughnut walls, gourmet cocktails and custom design elements that are significant to the couple. Unique touches like these are what make your big day truly special. – Bryce Humbarger, director of marketing, Executive Caterers 62

I find (couples are) doing a lot of small bites or appetizer stations rather than a plated meal. Because we’re Zack Bruell catering, and Zack has six restaurants, I’m able to pull from any of those menus. ... We’ve done stations where it’s kind of the Tour of CLE. I’ve been calling it the ‘Tour of CLE by ZBE.’ ... There’s no more ‘cookie-cutter weddings’ anymore; everyone’s putting their different spin on it. ... People are getting married on a farm or at a museum rather than a (house of worship), which I find more interesting. – Kim Paradise-Adelstein, catering director, Zack Bruell Events

One trend involves customized or personalized menus that sort of fit the character or personality of the bride and groom. Recently, we did one we affectionately called ‘trio, trio, trio.’ It was a three-course menu: a trio of salads for the first course, a trio of tacos with black bean and corn salsa as a side was the second course, and the last course was three different sliders. People want to tailor things to a moment in time in their relationship or (to a place) where they like to eat, and we try to incorporate whatever that personalized item is into the style of food we do. – Missy Chambless, event planner and director of sales, Spice Catering Co.

VENUES

Celebratory settings By Michael C. Butz & Marissa Nichol A couple can choose whether to forgo alcohol, flowers or formal wear at their wedding, but one aspect that isn’t optional is the venue. In fact, choosing the celebration’s setting is one of the very first – and most important – decisions to be made because it will set the tone for the big day and inform the choice of décor, attire and vendors. Purveyors of wedding venues from The Bertram – a Trademark Collection Hotel by Wyndham in Aurora, Cleveland Metroparks, which has locations throughout Greater Cleveland, and The Metropolitan at The 9 in downtown Cleveland offer insight regarding what’s trending in Northeast Ohio venue selection.

One of the trends that we’ve been seeing over the past couple of years actually is the experiential piece, so a lot of our guests that come through are looking for something special that they can actually experience with their friends or family. – Kelly Manderfield, chief marketing officer, Cleveland Metroparks Cleveland Metroparks

Newly engaged couples are looking for a unique one-stop shop for their weekend celebration. The Metropolitan at The 9 offers all of the iconic needs these couples are looking for. The 9 not only has the space for a flawless wedding from start to finish, but also an on-site restaurant, three one-of-a-kind cocktail outlets and plush accommodations. – Jessica Massa, downtown marketing coordinator, Geis Hospitality Group / The Metropolitan at The 9 Personalization (is a big trend). More and more couples are incorporating their stories, family traditions and other touches into their receptions. We love this! Cookie tables, favors that relate to how the couple met or even the family business are making their way into more and more receptions. We provide so much of the basics (linens, centerpieces, etc.) in our packages that couples are finding they have room to do a little more with specialty décor. – Victoria Kay Hudson, group sales manager, The Bertram – a Trademark Collection Hotel by Wyndham

PHOTOGRAPHERS

Perfect pictures By Alyssa Schmitt Unlike the food, music and flowers at your wedding, photographs aren’t something you can taste, hear or see — at least at first. Couples don’t know what they’re getting until after the big day is over. Finding the right photographer to capture those fleeting moments is an important task the couple needs to research. Local photographers Ian Miller of Swordfish Media Productions in Canton; Matthew Evers, co-owner of The Cleveland Photographic Co. in Eastlake; and Jonathan Koslen, owner of New Image Photography in Chagrin Falls shed light on what couples should look for in a photographer.

Look at your budget. If you’re going to spend $1,000 on a photographer, you’re going to get a $1,000 photographer. If you spend $5,000 on a photographer, you’re going to get a $5,000 photographer – and you’re going to get the equipment and expertise that go along with those price tags. If you’re the type of person that sits down and opens up the photo album regularly or flips through photos on your iPad, spend more on the photos than you do on the flowers. – Ian Miller, owner, lead photographer and videographer, Swordfish Media Productions

New Image Photography

One of the things we always tell our clients is make sure you find a style that matches what you have envisioned in your mind. There are thousands of photographers out there that have thousands of different styles. It’s important that you find a photographer that mirrors what you envisioned, because if not, we feel like you’re going to be let down when you get your images. – Matthew Evers, co-owner, The Cleveland Photographic Co. The most important thing is who can (the couple) relate to and connect with. There are lots of questions (photographers) can ask, you don’t want someone showing up to the wedding in jeans and not very presentable. You also want to know, most importantly, who you’re getting. They should meet with the actual photographer, not (with) the big studios that just send somebody. You’ll also get better results if you do an engagement shoot and get to know the photographer. If they have a bad engagement shoot experience, they might want to consider getting a different photographer. – Jonathan Koslen, owner, New Image Photography

Chuppot happiness By Alyssa Schmitt & Marissa Nichol The chuppah is more than a centerpiece of a wedding ceremony, it symbolizes the newlyweds’ first home. Like any home, there are endless decorative options and many ways to incorporate meaning, whether by weaving in garments from one side of the family with the other or draping vines to create an elegant look. Chuppot designers Saundra Stavis Bohl, owner of Chuppahs to Cherish in Shaker Heights; Toni Byrne, owner of PF Design in South Euclid; and Heather Thomas, owner and creative director of HeatherLily Floral & Event Design in Cleveland share what they’ve been seeing in chuppot designs. A lot of people want it to be more meaningful. If they’re not having a florist do it, then they want the chuppah itself to be more meaningful and more generational. People want to include other members of the family that are no longer with them or I’ve used pieces of the mother’s wedding dress or pieces of the bride’s wedding gown and I use it from the other side of the family. The chuppah is the first home of the new couple, so it’s a home that brings in other families and friends.

This year, our chuppahs were either designed with all natural elements of trailing vines and birch branches with an emphasis on florals or fabric-covered structures with accents of floral. Going into 2019, we’re seeing a large influx of client’s requesting modern-style chuppahs. Very clean and crisp, elegant but not fussy, melding classic and modern styles together to create a timeless design is where the trend is going. – Heather Thomas, owner and creative director, HeatherLily Floral & Event Design

The brides that have come recently, there’s a lot of floral. Sometimes in the past, the chuppahs were mostly fabric with just little accents of florals here and there. These chuppahs have fabric, but across the top and down the sides, there is a lot of floral – not necessarily color, but a lot of beautiful large flowers, like peonies and roses, and a lot of trailing greens.

What made our wedding most special was that we were surrounded by love. The flowers were beautiful, the band was beautiful and the food was beautiful, but what was most beautiful was we felt the love in the room. We felt the energy. – Shlomit

Shlomit Steynovitz & Ryan Haber Shlomit and Ryan were married July 29, 2018, at The Ritz-Carlton, Cleveland in downtown Cleveland, where Rabbi Zushe Greenberg officiated. Their wedding party consisted entirely of close family, and their celebration had an international and multicultural feel as they were joined by family and friends from across the U.S., Israel, Germany, France and Spain. Also worth noting, the couple’s reception was the first catered by The Ritz-Carlton’s kosher kitchen. Today, Shlomit, 28, and Ryan, 34, live in Lyndhurst and attend Solon Chabad.
