Congregation Beth Tikvah in Worthington was gifted four new stained glass windows last year, which can be viewed upon entrance to the temple and its library. The four windows depict themes of Torah study, service to G-d or prayer, acts of loving/kindness and holiness. As reported in the Columbus Jewish News, Beth Tikvah congregant David Binkovitz donated the stained glass windows to serve as a gateway to the congregation. They were designed by Israeli artist Ardyn Halter, and Chapel Studios of Kings Langley, England put the windows together – thus, they were developed across three continents. The windows are Halter’s first American stained glass commission and the first stained glass windows in a Central Ohio Jewish congregation that were made in England. During the Shabbat dedication ceremony July 31, 2020, Binkovitz said the windows, named “Upon These Things the World Stands,” are meant to educate and viewers may find their own unique meaning in them.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Seeking light for 2021 and beyond The events of this past year undoubtedly provide a reason to seek brightness. The tragedies and injustices experienced near and far since we published our inaugural edition of SOURCE Columbus – your annual guide to Jewish living in Central Ohio – more than a year ago have brought worry and grief to the community. And with that, there’s a renewed need to effect change and create light. Bringing in light is something Congregation Beth Tikvah in Worthington did quite literally last year. As reported in the Columbus Jewish News last summer, Beth Tikvah congregant David Binkovitz had the idea that four stained glass windows would serve as a colorful, meaningful gateway to the temple. With his leadership, the design of the windows became an effort across three continents, as Binkovitz sought the design of Israeli artist Ardyn Halter as well as assistance from Chapel Studios of Kings Langley, England to put the windows together. At a virtual Shabbat dedication July 31, 2020, Binkovitz said each window has a theme: Torah study, service to G-d or prayer, acts of loving/kindness and holiness. Moreover, viewers were invited to find their own meaning in the windows, collectively titled “Upon These Things the World Stands.” Binkovitz said at the dedication, “A friend of mine once told me, ‘Stained glass windows should be like poetry: One must read them and make them your own by coming to your own understanding of what you may see and feel based upon your own unique experiences.’” The stained glass windows – which serve as the cover of this year’s SOURCE Columbus – are a snapshot of the beauty, history and brightness created within the Columbus Jewish community this past year. Despite the unimaginable hardships in 2020 and the start of 2021, we have reason to believe more light is coming. And as our daily lives continue to unfold, the organizations, institutions and businesses in SOURCE Columbus demonstrate the strong foundation of support we have. To help you remain connected with Jewish and secular organizations doing good and providing services, SOURCE functions as a directory to look to when you realize you need something, or perhaps want to give somewhere, but aren’t sure where. In this issue, you’ll find: • Extensive listings from community organizations, agencies, synagogues, camps and schools;

• Additional listings from area businesses, from those that provide health care services, senior care services or professional/legal services to those that offer catering and other party services, arts and cultural opportunities, or banking and financial planning assistance; and • At-a-glance information regarding Jewish holidays as well as weekly candlelighting times. In other words, SOURCE Columbus is a must-read for area newcomers and longtime residents alike who are seeking information about the Jewish community and how best to navigate it, especially in ever-changing and challenging times like these. Binkovitz’s unique gift to his temple is just one example of the giving back mentality of Central Ohio Jews. Also included in this issue is a look back at the 2020 class of the Columbus Jewish News 18 Difference Makers. The 18 individuals honored by the CJN truly exemplify agents of change we seek in our community, through the efforts they each put forth in repairing the world in which we live. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic prevented us from honoring these fine and deserving individuals in person, however, you can watch our virtual event anytime at columbusjewishnews.com/18dm. This year, the CJN plans to shift and intensify the way in which it sheds light on the local community. While after the pandemic hit Ohio last spring we temporarily combined our Cleveland and Columbus Jewish News on a biweekly basis, we are excited to return the biweekly, standalone Columbus Jewish News in the coming weeks, later this year. Printing an independent Columbus Jewish News for our readers is something that has been on our minds all year, and we can’t wait to expand our local coverage. And as always, columbusjewishnews.com will continue to be updated daily with local and world news and features, some of which are also included in our daily morning e-newsletter, Boker Tov. I encourage you to continue following along. May the year 2021 bring you and your family light, safety and peace. And may you and your family go from strength to strength.

2021 HOLIDAYS

JEWISH HOLIDAYS and noteworthy dates PURIM

Thursday, Feb. 25 (begins at sunset) Friday, Feb. 26 (ends at nightfall) The jolly festival of Purim is celebrated every year on the 14th of the Hebrew month of Adar (late winter/early spring). It commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia from Haman’s plot “to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day,” as recorded in the Megillah (book of Esther).

PASSOVER

Saturday, March 27 (begins at sunset) Sunday, April 4 (ends at nightfall) The eight-day festival of Passover is celebrated in the early spring, from the 15th through the 22nd of the Hebrew month of Nissan. It commemorates the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. By following the rituals of Passover, we have the ability to relive and experience the true freedom that our ancestors gained.

YOM HASHOAH

YOM HAZIKARON

Wednesday, April 7 (begins at sunset) Thursday, April 8 (ends at nightfall) Holocaust Remembrance Day

Tuesday, April 13 (begins at sundown) Wednesday, April 14 (ends at nightfall) Israel Memorial Day

YOM HA’ATZMAUT

Wednesday, April 14 (begins at sundown) Thursday, April 15 (ends at nightfall) Israel Independence Day

SHAVUOT Sunday, May 16 (begins at sunset) Tuesday, May 18 (ends at nightfall) Shavuot coincides with the date that G-d gave the Torah to the Jewish people at Mount Sinai more than 3,300 years ago. It comes after 49 days of eager counting, as we prepared ourselves for this special day. It is celebrated by lighting candles, staying up all night to learn Torah, hearing the reading of the Ten Commandments in synagogue, feasting on dairy foods and more.

TISHA B’AV

Saturday, July 17 (begins at sunset) Sunday, July 18 (ends at nightfall) The Three Weeks is an annual mourning period that falls in the summer during which we do not cut our hair, purchase new clothes, listen to music or hold weddings. It reaches its climax and concludes with the fast of the ninth of Av, the date when both Holy Temples were set aflame. This is the saddest day of the Jewish calendar, and it is also the date that many other tragedies befell our people. The fast of Tisha b’Av begins at sunset the previous evening. Besides fasting, we abstain from additional pleasures: washing, applying lotions or creams, wearing leather shoes and marital relations. Until midday, we sit on the floor or on low stools.

2021 HOLIDAYS

JEWISH HOLIDAYS and noteworthy dates ROSH HASHANAH

Monday, Sept. 6 (begins at sunset) Wednesday, Sept. 8 (ends at nightfall) Rosh Hashanah is the birthday of the universe, the day G‑d created Adam and Eve, and it’s celebrated as the head of the Jewish year. It’s celebrated with candlelighting in the evenings, festive meals with sweet delicacies during the night and day, prayer services that include the sounding of the ram’s horn (shofar) on both mornings and desisting from creative work.

YOM KIPPUR

Wednesday, Sept. 15 (begins at sunset) Thursday, Sept. 16 (ends at nightfall) Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year – the day on which we are closest to G-d and to the quintessence of our own souls. It is the Day of Atonement – “For on this day He will forgive you, to purify you, that you be cleansed from all your sins before G-d” (Leviticus 16:30). For nearly 26 hours – from several minutes before sunset on 9 Tishrei to after nightfall on 10 Tishrei – we “afflict our souls,” or abstain from food and drink, do not wash or anoint our bodies, do not wear leather footwear and abstain from marital relations.

SUKKOT

Monday, Sept. 20 (begins at sunset) Monday, Sept. 27 (ends at nightfall) For 40 years, as our ancestors traversed the Sinai Desert, following the Exodus from Egypt, miraculous “clouds of glory” surrounded and hovered over them, shielding them from the dangers and discomforts of the desert. Ever since, we remember G-d’s kindness and reaffirm our trust in His providence by dwelling in a sukkah – a hut of temporary construction with a roof covering of branches – for the duration of the Sukkot festival (on the Jewish calendar Tishrei 15-21). For seven days and nights, we eat all our meals in the sukkah and otherwise regard it as our home.

SIMCHAT TORAH

Monday, Sept. 27 (begins at sunset) Wednesday, Sept. 29, (ends at nightfall) The holiday of Sukkot is followed by an independent holiday called Shemini Atzeret. In Israel, this is a one-day holiday; in the Diaspora, it is a two-day holiday, and the second day is known as Simchat Torah. This holiday is characterized by utterly unbridled joy, which surpasses even the joy of Sukkot. The joy reaches its climax on Simchat Torah, when we celebrate the conclusion – and restart – of the annual Torah-reading cycle.

CHANUKAH

Sunday, Nov. 28 (begins at sunset) Monday, Dec. 6 (ends at nightfall) Chanukah is the Jewish eight-day, wintertime “festival of lights,” celebrated with a nightly menorah lighting, special prayers and fried foods. At the heart of the festival is the nightly menorah lighting. The menorah holds nine flames, one of which is the shamash (“attendant”), which is used to kindle the other eight lights. On the first night, we light just one flame. On the second night, an additional flame is lit. By the eighth night of Chanukah, all eight lights are kindled. Special blessings are recited, often to a traditional melody, before the menorah is lit, and traditional songs are sung afterward.

Independent living. Assisted living. Emphasis on living.

At Wexner Heritage Village, our approach to care revolves around a sense of community. To truly “live” together. Fully and purposefully. This has been our guiding philosophy for 70 years. It’s how we engage with independent and assisted living residents in our Creekside community. It guides the memory care we provide at The Geraldine Schottenstein Cottage. It ensures that we make the most of every moment through our Zusman Hospice services. It’s why our highly rated rehabilitation and long-term care at Heritage House has been trusted for generations. Every moment of life is special and precious. We honor every life. And every moment.

Every moment.
