Van Aken District continues to rise

T

he last time Jstyle visited the Van Aken District for a photo shoot depicted a very different scene. When we took photos there for our Winter 2018 issue, the mixed-use development was just getting started. Businesses were beginning to open in its Market Hall and surrounding streets. It held promise to become a central Shaker Heights hub for good food, shopping and more, often focusing on small and local businesses. Today, it has delivered on that promise. New boutiques, restaurants and other businesses have continued to pop up at a rate that’s hard to keep up with. I know each time I visit – which is pretty often since Jstyle’s office is just a couple miles away – there seems to be something new and interesting to check out. This June marked a big new addition to the northeast side of the development – Northstar Café, which is the Cleveland area’s first location. Northstar, which began in Columbus and has several locations around there, is a pleasant, modern space that serves American-style food with a healthy, sustainable twist. While Jstyle rarely returns to photograph at the same location within the scope of less than five years – typically opting to feature locations or neighborhoods we’ve never done before – we felt these vast new additions warranted returning to the socalled Shaker Heights city “centerpiece.” And to be completely honest, amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the many changes it has brought, five years seems like a much longer time ago. Paired with the photo shoot showing off the District on a sunny and typically bustling day, in this issue we also include short stories spotlighting a selection of businesses there, many of which are new or have Jewish connections. I hope the stories help promote their unique items and services, and introduce you to some places you may have missed on past visits.

Summer 2022

Taking a trip to the west side of Cleveland, in this issue we also check out chef Douglas Katz’s new Amba restaurant in Ohio City’s Hingetown neighborhood. While it has become somewhat of a pattern to see Katz continuing to innovate with ambitious dishes and unique dining experiences – which we’ve documented in Jstyle in years past – it’s certainly never boring to experience any of his food or spaces. And beyond Northeast Ohio, in this issue we explore a startup aiming to transform the fashion experience for those who choose to dress modestly. While the business is based in New York City, it has at least one Cleveland connection in its co-founder and is accessible anywhere via the web and social media. We also scope out some staycation opportunities in Northeast Ohio in a special advertising section. While summer is a popular time to travel, I also encourage you to check out the diverse local institutions in our area. I know for me personally, this summer is filled up with social obligations near and far – a couple for which I’ve had to do extensive planning. So any weekends I have free, I’m looking to do something that takes little to no planning, is relatively inexpensive and still transports me to somewhere that feels different and allows me to learn something new. I’d suspect many of you feel the same way. Whether it’s hanging out at the Van Aken District or exploring another awesome neighborhood or local establishment this summer – or all of the above – I hope you’ll take advantage of all the Cleveland area has to offer. It’s certainly an exciting time here.

Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink In 2019, chef Michael Schwartz’s Genuine Hospitality Group opened Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink at the Van Aken District. It is the restaurant’s second location, the first being in the Miami Design District in Florida. “I think what makes Michael’s Genuine unique, first off, is the food,” says Tim Pursifull, general manager at Michael’s Genuine in Shaker Heights. Pursifull says what drives the restaurant is the same concept for which Schwartz won a James Beard Award. “Michael is very definitive of what he wanted with Michael’s Food & Drink and to me, the best way to sum it up is to read the wall in the restaurant which talks about being genuine,” Pursifull says. He explains that the description speaks of being honest, straightforward and free of pretense or hypocrisy.

“I really feel like that is how Michael leads the design of his menus,” Pursifull notes. He says Schwartz likes to have food on the menu that is very seasonal, fresh and high quality. And he chose the Van Aken District, located at 3427 Tuttle Road, for his second restaurant because the location is set up in a way similar to the one in Miami, Pursifull says. “It’s kind of like this half-outdoor restaurant, half-indoor restaurant,” he explains. “When we open our patio during patio season, it really doubles the size of our restaurant.” This sets the tone for a Miami-like feel, even in Cleveland. “You can set the tone with how you want to dine,” Pursifull says. - Meghan Walsh

Northstar Cafe After debuting in Columbus in 2004, Northstar Cafe has grown throughout Central Ohio and beyond for its focus on creative, healthy and delicious menu options. The cafe in Shaker Heights, which officially opened June 1 at the Van Aken District following a soft launch, marks its Northeast Ohio entry. “We are beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to serve the Shaker Heights community,” says Kevin Malhame, Northstar founder and CEO, in a statement to Jstyle. “The Van Aken District is such a special project. We’re really grateful to be here.” Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, plus brunch on the weekend, Northstar highlights sustainable and artisanal ingredients. Its decor includes hardwood booths, benches, Italian leather

stools, copper light fixtures and a bar that seats 24. The indoor space can accommodate 130 guests, and it has an attached patio. Its menu boasts dishes like its popular Northstar burger – made with organic black beans, brown rice and beets – and pizzas, bowls/ salads, other sandwiches and unique breakfast options. As for drinks, it serves refreshing cocktails in addition to coffee, smoothies, wine, beer and other beverages. Malhame, who began Northstar with his brother Darren, also created Brassica, a Mediterranean fast-casual restaurant also at Van Aken and other locations in Central Ohio. - Amanda Koehn

District Gallery Turn onto Walker Road within the Van Aken District, and you’ll easily be drawn into the bright and contemporary District Gallery, an art space that opened in 2019. The gallery showcases a mix of local, national and international artists making work in a variety of media. For Carolina Kane, a District Gallery artist and the gallery’s manager, it’s important that the gallery be approachable. While art galleries can sometimes seem intimidating to the passerby, District Gallery wants to be inviting and to help educate, she says. “We are an educational space to share ideas, to educate about the artwork, techniques, stuff like that, and getting people passionate about art,” she says. “I am an artist, some of my employees are artists as well, and as artists we love sharing information about other artists. … I feel like our job is to close the gap between artwork and clients. So we act as this great conversational middle ground for all of that to happen.” Among upcoming happenings at District Gallery, artist Neill Wright will visit from South Africa for a solo show this July. District Gallery represents a range of artists and also shows work by some

new to the gallery, Kane says. The gallery was opened by owners Richard Uria, a member of the 2020 class of Cleveland Jewish News “18 Difference Makers,” the late Bob Roth, who passed away April 24, and Karen Chaikin. It has since started working with companies on curating artwork for their spaces, which Kane cites as one of her favorite parts of her job. She’s heard feedback that works selected for businesses have helped improve their companies’ culture. District Gallery also does residential projects and digital placements ahead of purchasing artwork, where potential buyers can try out pieces virtually in their spaces to see how they fit and feel. “We have grown incredibly since opening,” Kane says. “Both of the owners really didn’t anticipate that we were going to get this big, which is very exciting.” The gallery is at 20076 Walker Road. - Amanda Koehn

Mitchell’s Ice Cream A staple of the Van Aken District – and across Northeast Ohio – Mitchell’s Ice Cream is a consistently great way to beat the heat with sweet treats. After opening the location in 2018, the scoop shop owned by brothers Pete and Mike Mitchell offers classic menu items now quite well-known to Mitchell’s customers, while regularly featuring new flavors – including great dairy-free and vegan options. Jstyle shines a light on some more Van Aken District businesses – many of which are new to the area or have Jewish connections

Adun Spice Company Within Van Aken District’s Market Hall is a new spice and cooking shop, Adun Spice Company, founded and owned by chef Ramat Wiley. Adun is a curated shop of single spices, artisanal pantry items and spice blends developed by Wiley and based on her own cooking. The concept for Adun came to Wiley during the COVID-19 pandemic, when her culinary work paused and she had free time to explore an area she’d been interested in – spices. She graduated from Cuyahoga Community College’s culinary program in 2016 and has worked in non-traditional culinary jobs, such as food styling and cooking for private events. “I’ve always loved spice shops,” she says. “Everywhere I travel, I look for different spice shops just to see what people in different areas are gravitating toward (and) cooking. Every region is different in what their everyday staples are.” She decided to start Adun based on nine blends, herbs and salts “curated based on how I cook,” she explains. Beginning as a pop-up and online shop in early 2021, she opened the store at Van Aken in

February of this year. “I literally cook all different types of ways, and I think having that knowledge helped me be able to talk to different people about things that they want to cook,”Wiley says. Adun’s citrus garlic is its bestseller – “That’s kind of like the blend that started it all,” says Wiley, noting it’s good on nearly everything, including chicken, vegetables and seafood. Its golden milk is a drink blend of warm spices centering on turmeric as well as cinnamon, ginger, black pepper and cardamom. It can be blended warm with plant-based milk and a sweetener, or as a cold drink over ice or blended. The flavors also go well with ice cream, oatmeal and cereal. Adun’s single spices can also fill in pantry holes. Wiley says, “We have a variety of things you can’t normally find in traditional grocery stores – things you find in cookbooks that you are like, ‘where the heck do I get that at?’” - Amanda Koehn

The Rice Shop + Lox, Stock & Brisket You could say that to chef Anthony Zappola, small and complex are beautiful. Zappola, the award-winning chef/owner of The Rice Shop and Lox, Stock & Brisket Delicatessen at the Van Aken District, uses a similar approach to the menu at his two restaurants. With a short, focused menu, each relies on a strong, singular theme or concept. And each has a limited menu: The Rice Shop has just six items, with dishes like Mochiko Chicken, Kentucky Fried Fish, Steak Fried Rice and Tuna Poke. Emphasis is on flavorful sauces – such as yum yum, sambal sour cream and mostly cold sides like cabbage slaw and sesame salad. The concept, Zappola says, was to use American cooking technique and to add Asian flavors. Specials include straight-up Asian favorites such as won ton soup and egg rolls. Lox, Stock & Brisket’s menu includes just seven classic, and slightly reimagined, sandwiches. For example, the Lincoln Park, #2 has chicken schnitzel and features hot sauce aioli. Sides include matzo ball soup, potato salad and slaw. The menu also includes four breakfast sandwiches. Most include scrambled eggs. And the Ridge Lane – lox, cream cheese, cucumbers, dill and red onion on a bagel – makes an appearance on both breakfast and lunch menus. The singular breakfast side offering is home fries. The menu also includes quotations from actor Adam Driver, and this one from actor Michael J. Fox: “I’m going to marry a Jewish woman because I like the idea of getting up Sunday morning and going to the deli.” Zappola speaks of a similarity between top favorites on each menu, Kentucky Fried Fish from The Rice Shop and the Lincoln Park from Lox, Stock & Brisket.

Luster In December 2018, friends Tamar Brecher and Robin McCann opened Luster gift boutique in the Van Aken Market Hall with the mission of localizing unique gifts “We started to talk about how every time we travel to other places, other cities, we Earrings from Marlyn Schiff at Luster are designed with two small huggie hoops, pave stones and a connecting chain. “The sauce is the same, the spices that we use, the chicken spices in the flour are the same,” Zappola tells Jstyle. “Both have coleslaw (and) one has pickles and one has like a fish sauce vinaigrette, but they both use cabbage. SLFMKR When Kait Turshen decided to open SLFMKR, a curated clean beauty and selfcare shop at the Van Aken District in Shaker Heights in 2020, it was because it was something she wanted and needed but did not exist. “I started my journey of clean while living in New York and found myself bouncing from store to store on the weekend to pick up various clean beauty and self-care items I was using at the time,” she says. “The errands were endless. When I moved to Cleveland in 2018, I was then relying on either ordering most of my personal care items online or picking them up on trips while back in New York.” Realizing she couldn’t be the only Clevelander having this problem, she took to the drawing board – and SLFMKR was born. But why Van Aken District? Turshen says the area “immediately felt like home.” “We found ourselves driving across town frequently to spend time at Van Aken,” she recalls. “Eventually, we moved to Shaker Heights and found ourselves eating at Van

Aken nightly during our kitchen renovation. When the (COVID-19) pandemic hit and we were still in lockdown, I often biked to Van Aken with our daughter as an outing and I would envision SLFMKR there each trip.” Now two years into the business, Turshen says SLFMKR is unique due to its “incredibly personal, individualized approach” to clean beauty and self-care. “We are more than just another beauty store,” she says. “Our team is trained to go beyond a sales associate role but rather help to curate an individualized approach for every customer, skincare concern and selfcare goal.” For those first-time visitors to SLFMKR, Turshen says don’t be afraid to explore – that’s what being self-made is all about. “We believe in redefining the concept of what it means to be self-made in today’s society,” she says. “Rather than being defined by your wealth, celebrity, social status or even social media following, we believe that being self-made is to achieve success in your

REFLECTIVE REFRESH Shaker Heights native makes modest fashion accessible, aspirational

By Amanda Koehn

E

xploring how Judaism fit into her life as a recent college graduate, Danielle Immerman began dressing modestly to fit her evolving religious identity. Studying at a seminary in Jerusalem, Immerman, who grew up in Shaker Heights, found herself searching endlessly for clothing that was modest but on trend and in line with her personal style. “If you wanted to dress modestly, you really had to spend like five hours scouring the internet to find clothes that still felt trendy and of the times – like, it was not easy,” she says. Immerman Less than a year into her modest fashion journey, COVID-19 hit and Immerman and her friend Liza Sakhaie had time to think about how they could improve the modest fashion experience. With Sakhaie as CEO and Immerman as chief marketing officer, the pair founded The Reflective – a New York City-based startup that curates and sells modest and modern clothing, accessories and shoes to interfaith women, encouraging them to express their values, individuality and personal style. In addition to gathering highfashion modest finds on its website, the-reflective.com, the company sends newsletters, hosts a blog, and runs social media accounts and in-person events. The Reflective launched in October 2020. Nearing two years in business, it’s ever-relevant as web searches for modest fashion grow. And while the company isn’t trying to set any sort of standard for what’s modest and what’s not – that’s for the buyer to decide, Immerman says – it aims to increase fashionable options that are easily accessible, while also developing community across women of different religions and observance. “We really try to cultivate a sense of community because at the end of the day, our whole goal and our whole mission is to empower women to feel more connected to themselves, to express their internal self externally in a way that feels authentic to them – that’s modesty at the end of the day,” Immerman says.

“I just started really exploring what Judaism meant in the context of my life and how I wanted to live, and I found a lot of meaning and connection in it,” she says. Following graduation, she studied at the seminary in Jerusalem and met Sakhaie as her roommate. They both were interested in fashion and dressing more modestly as their religious identities formed. At the same time, as a former sorority member who enjoys going out and expressing herself through outfits, Immerman says she didn’t want to dress plainly. “It was very important to always be myself, and it was also very important to my friend Liza,” Immerman says. “She worked at Bloomingdale’s and was always interested in fashion. ... When she started dressing modestly, we both really felt there wasn’t an option out there that kind of catered to your modern needs.” After studying in Israel, both women moved to New York, where Immerman worked as a content manager at an advertising agency. Sakhaie was furloughed from Bloomingdale’s when the pandemic hit in 2020, which is when the business began to take off. The Reflective has three major components: its marketplace, Neriah Hadad

FINDING MODEST FASHION Immerman, 25, a graduate of Hathaway Brown School in Shaker Heights, grew up attending Reform services at The Temple-Tifereth Israel in Beachwood. While in college for communication and media studies at the University of Michigan, she wanted to become involved with Jewish groups on campus and connected with the Jewish Resource Center, which provides an outlet for students looking to remain or become more involved in Judaism, according to its website.

or website curating fashion finds at various prices, its content via newsletters, social media and style inspiration, and community engagement through events, ambassador programs and other initiatives to bring together interfaith women. “(Sakhaie) took the time to think, how can we actually make this modest shopping experience better so that women like us who are looking to feel good about themselves – stylish, fashion forward – can access all of those clothes that also meet their modest needs, and that’s how The Reflective was born,” Immerman says.

FASHIONING A LIFESTYLE Immerman identifies as a baal teshuvah, or a Jew from a secular background who becomes observant. She says for people who fit that description, there’s a benefit of having examples for how religious aspects new to them can fit with their identity. “You need to see how you can bring it into your life in an authentic way,” she says, adding that women also identify with The Reflective as a way to feel validated in the struggles of dressing modestly – like finding bathing suits or exercise clothing. Moreover, there is a misconception of what modesty means across religions. What’s modest for a Christian woman is not the same for a Muslim or Jewish woman, and vice versa. She cites the example that for Muslims, pants are considered modest – and a great option because dresses have to cover ankles to be deemed modest – while they aren’t for many religious Christians and Jews. For that reason, The Reflective’s picks include a wide variety of fashion finds with different degrees and types of modesty, and it doesn’t define the term in any hard and fast way.

The company also aims to educate on how modesty varies across religions as well as personal preferences, and what works for one person may not work for another. It’s all about having better options that are easier to find across the board, she explains. “(Modesty) has nothing to do with the length of your skirt,” Immerman says. “That’s a message we really aim to communicate through our content and through our in-person events because existing online is not enough. We really feel like by bringing women together in person, we are able to cultivate this greater sense of connection and facilitate impactful conversations in a way that’s just not possible online.” While some may say its items aren’t modest enough – or perhaps too modest for others – the aim isn’t to cater to any specific religious group, style or preference. It’s about making things easier for those who do want stylish, modest options, she says. “We are taking the five-hour search out of the equation in the hopes that you can spend time doing other things instead of searching the internet for a bridesmaid dress,” she says.

INCREASED DEMAND According to the Year in Fashion 2019 report by Lyst, a shopping app, modest fashion internet searches rose 90% in 2019 over the previous year, which is relayed in The Reflective’s media kit. The Reflective has amassed 10,500 followers on Instagram. “It’s definitely been a slow build,” Immerman says. “The past year and a half, like a huge part of our struggle was just building up our follower base and audience and community.” She says for Jewish followers of The Reflective, many are starting to increase their observance or are simply curious about modest fashion. While she says she doesn’t know why interest in modest fashion may be increasing, she suspects it’s partly due to the increasing Muslim

population in both the United States and the Middle East. “Even within Judaism there’s a huge trend toward people becoming more observant,” she says. “I definitely don’t think that’s any contributing factor to any search trend numbers because we are such a small minority, but I think it’s interesting to think about within the general trend of people becoming more observant in any faith they are in.”

MOVING FORWARD Next for The Reflective is overhauling its website for a September launch, which will make the shopping experience even easier, Immerman says. Among advances, it will allow users to check out on The Reflective’s website, rather than being directed to the brand or retailer. The Reflective also plans to increase its in-person programming, bring on new brands and partner with new influencers, Immerman says, in order to expand its reach across faiths. Overall, Immerman says feedback has been generally appreciative. Women will reach out and explain that before The Reflective, they were struggling to feel good about their clothes, she says. They didn’t know how to shop or put pieces together “because a lot of the women who come to us are newcomers to modesty. They really don’t have any kind of framework for what modesty looks like within the context of a modern life.” On a personal level for Immerman, starting The Reflective has not only improved her relationship to fashion as an observant Jewish woman. She’s also learned about and connected with nonJewish religious groups that dress modestly. “There are so many nuances that are fascinating to learn about,” she says. “… It’s amazing to see the ability that modesty really can have in uniting people of different faiths.” js

Pretty patterns By Becky Raspe Everyone loves a good accessory, no matter their gender. This summer, consider accentuating one of our built-in accessories – our nails. Anyone can fashionably sport a good manicure, and according to Jamie Spaid, founder of Manifest at the Van Aken District in Shaker Heights, there is an emerging trend for every style this summer. While most trends point to patterns and prints, individuals can play it up or tone it down in any way they like, with wild prints or floral motifs that Spaid says are “a great way to spice up your basic manicure,” or going the minimalist route, which she says “is trending in a big way.” “You can’t go wrong with adding a little shimmer to the already classic neutral manicure,” she says of accented minimalist nails. For those who want a happy medium of wild and reserved as a way to usher in a fun summer, Spaid says rainbow French tips are also a popular choice in beauty circles for the season. “French manicures have been making their way back into the nail scene for quite some time now, but trust us, this is not your mother’s French,” Spaid says. “You’ll be seeing vibrant tips all summer. The coolest part is it’s completely customizable. Pick one color or 10 – this is the one thing you can’t overdo.” No matter the direction you go, Spaid makes one thing clear – “have fun with it.” “I think people now more than ever are having a ‘why not, it’s just nails?’ kind of attitude, and it’s so much fun,” she says. Summery shift By Amanda Koehn This season, fashion is telling us to embrace bright colors and comfort with trends pointing toward vibrant hues and clothes that flow, appearing a bit more casual than we’ve seen in seasons past. Some examples are sporty sandals, baggy jeans and flowy dresses. For a slightly dressier look, try a flatform sandal and outfits with details like exaggerated necklines and embroidery. For dressing up or down, don’t be afraid to make it colorful. Need creative ideas? Local retailers like Knuth’s in Pepper Pike, J3 Clothing Company in Moreland Hills and Mar-Lou Shoes in Lyndhurst offer pieces to help select bold, bright and comfy choices this summer.

Nosh News Appetizing bites about Jewish chefs,

restaurateurs and community staples

By Becky Raspe

Kosher barbecue spot coming to Shaker Heights Mendel’s Kansas City BBQ is planning a late summer or early fall opening at the former Lucy’s Sweet Surrender bakery building at 20314 Chagrin Blvd. in Shaker Heights. Its namesake, Mendel Segal, told the Cleveland Jewish News he was attracted to the area because his wife has family in Cleveland. Another iteration of the concept is based in Miami, Fla., called Mendel’s Backyard Barbecue, which has been open for five years.

“I did some research on the community and saw the Jewish community is growing like crazy,” Segal says. “I think it’s right for the business. And the Shaker Heights area too is growing, and it’s become a real food destination.” The restaurant will be a full-service kosher operation, specializing in dishes like brisket, smoked pastrami, beef ribs, beef back ribs, smoked veal brisket, lamb ribs, smoked

turkey, burnt ends and smoked chicken. A full craft beer menu and liquor license is also planned. Other menu items will include soups, salads, wings, burgers, fish and steak. “I don’t just want to sell good kosher barbecue – I want to sell good barbecue, period,” Segal says. “It’s exciting stuff.” More details will come as the shop readies to open. Visit cjn.org for updates.

Crumbl Cookies sweetens Beachwood shopping center Crumbl Cookies is open at Pavilion Shopping Center in Beachwood, bringing a bit of sweetness to the community. At 23435 Chagrin Blvd., the location is owned by a Utah-based couple, Ian and Katie Robertson, and locally managed and operated by their business partner, Alyssa Schlegel of Westlake. Originally set to be managed by Schlegel’s friend, the COVID-19 pandemic had other plans when the first proposed location was put on hold. Her friend was no longer interested when the idea resurfaced, Schlegel told the Cleveland Jewish News. This isn’t Schlegel’s first foray into the food industry. She’s worked with Driftwood Restaurant Group and at catering events with chef Zack Bruell. Growing up in Sagamore Hills, she is also aptly versed in all things Beachwood, she says. “It’s always been a great retail destination and the community has always been

top-notch,” Schlegel says. “The community has always been so supportive and excited about businesses, especially food-based ones. It was a no-brainer that way.” A Crumbl fan herself, Schlegel says she’s excited for guests to stop in and try the cookies, which she referred to as “tiny little art pieces.” “I love the experience of it all,” she says, adding her favorite is the waffle cookie that

comes with a butter cream butter pad and syrup cup. Hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays and from 8 a.m. to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. The store is closed Sundays so staff can prepare the week’s menu – which is always different, but milk chocolate chip is always available as the bakery’s first cookie.

aims to give the gastronomically adventurous a communal, inspiring experience. Enter Amba from West 28th Street, follow the lamp to the hostess stand, and a unique restaurant slowly emerges. and Co. of Cleveland first catches the eye. Shred and Co. also charred Amba’s walls, giving them unusual depth. Years ago, the space was occupied by Schaefer Printing Company. A big Kelsey hand press, its two steel plates coming together to print, was at the heart of what is now an ultramodern restaurant. Circular wall sconces, illuminated to exude a subtle nimbus, are Amba designer Kelley Shaffer’s homage to the building’s industrial past. Named after a condiment based in pickled mango, Amba is two spaces, each with its own entrance: the restaurant, which can accommodate 80, and Bar Amba, a cocktail incubator with room for 40. It occupies twothirds of a single-story art deco building on West 28th Street between Detroit Avenue and Church Street. “The space is all about light and shadows, so if you look at all of the detail, it’s all about using light in different ways,” Katz says, citing the restaurant’s dramatic window treatments and sculptural touches. “Depending on the light outside, you’re not sure if you’re looking at something that has depth or doesn’t have depth.”

A rope ceiling adds to the earthy ambiance, and 24 speakers above the rope “will add some really exciting music to the space,” Katz says in an interview a few weeks before Amba’s May 24 opening. Small, battery-operated table lamps – an ingenious feature that addresses Amba’s communal intent – can be moved around the table for easier menu reading. Amba is “very world-focused and very locally inspired,” Katz says. “It’s not a place that you can really say is anywhere, and that was on purpose because we are creating a food experience that is a fusion of flavors. It is inspired by India, but it is definitely our take on these flavors using ingredients you can get here. It’s not meant to be this traditional Indian experience.” The judiciously lit Bar Amba, which Katz calls “our drink lab,” is even more intimate. Master mixologist Noah Biddle, like Amba chef Cameron Pishnery a Katz veteran, thinks Porcelain & Pine, a clarified milk punch involving “liquor infused with a variety of spices,” will be a big seller. Different kinds of cocktails will be served at Amba’s two bars, which Biddle oversees. Amba began as a ghost kitchen, as did Katz’s South Americainspired Chimi. Currently dormant, he hopes to find a brick-andmortar home for Chimi in 2023. Zhug, Katz’s Middle Eastern-style restaurant in Cleveland Heights’ Cedar-Fairmount neighborhood, opened in November 2019, shifted to takeout only during the pandemic and is now back as a popular in-person dining spot. The idea behind ghost kitchens was “research and development for the restaurants we wanted to create after the pandemic,” Katz says. But it was never his intent to be a ghost-kitchen chef. Katz also is chef-partner at Provenance at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Provenance has yet to reopen since the pandemic. His empire has shrunk, “but we’re going to regrow,” he says. Amba, his latest laboratory, is quite a growth spurt.

COOKING WITH KATZ A “white Jewish kid from Shaker Heights,” Katz says he has known he wanted to be a chef since he was 7 years old. “I loved eating,” he says. “I was very chubby, and I’ve been chubby my whole life; I finally got it under control in the last five years.” The way Katz grows as a chef is by using new ingredients and challenging himself to learn new food culture. He put a cheese plate on the fire menu to learn about cheese, he toasted and ground spices to find out about spices, and he makes dishes with unfamiliar ingredients to see how they come together. “My education is about exploring cultures, so over the last 10 years I’ve been lucky to be able to do that” he says, through his ventures where he “learned what was selling.” He also absorbs through travel. He spent time in northern India about seven years ago, and for years worked with Radhika Rajwade, who cooked Indian dinners with him at fire. Rajwade, he says, sparked his Fire Spice Company and Chutney B, his short-lived rice bowl concept at the Van Aken District’s Market Hall in Shaker Heights. Amba is Indian, though “not in any way traditional Indian,” Katz says. Amba’s menu was set up so service staff can guide diners to the right blend of dishes. “If it sounds good to you,

you should order it” is another guidepost. It also has suggested menus, by size and component. “Our servers are our guides, and the idea is you’re exploring food,” Katz says. Like Zhug, Amba doesn’t take reservations. Like Zhug, Amba encourages sharing – it’s a menu of “shareable plates.” But Katz calls Amba “more transportive, from the outside to the inside.” In addition, its servers are happy to suggest pairings from a menu offering numerous vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free dishes, some seafood, chicken and a venison curry. An Amba meal is not about a first course, a second course and dessert. “It’s about ordering several dishes and, much like you would at a Chinese restaurant, eating them together,” Katz says. The bigger the group, the more dishes to try and the more experiences to share. Those menu experiences, developed by chef Pishnery, are likely quite a bit different.

HINGETOWN CALLING Curiosity drives Katz – and not just in regard to food. He chooses neighborhoods for his restaurants, hanging out in them for years before he commits. The longtime Cleveland Heights resident, whose family attends both Park Synagogue in Pepper Pike and Cleveland Heights and The Temple-Tifereth Israel in Beachwood, has had his eye on Hingetown since before it was known by that name.

After sampling local attractions like Rising Star Coffee, Jeremy Umansky’s Larder Delicatessen and Bakery, Cleveland Tea Revival and Transformer Station art museum over several years, Katz and business partner Todd Thompson decided they wanted to join the Hingetown conversation. Katz says he is happy to help animate West 28th, a street slightly off the beaten track. He notes the “beautiful hangar buildings,” futuristic Quonset huts next to Amba, and predicts that “this street will really activate.” Graham Veysey, a developer involved in several Hingetown ventures, showed Katz the old printing press site. “It was a raw space, but I love that,” Katz says. “It was just so hidden from the street, but when I saw the tiger mural … I was looking for an Indian restaurant, and tigers in India are very popular.” That vivid mural, which Michela Picchi painted in 2016, stretches the West 28th Street length of the building. It was a very loud sign that Katz had found the right place for Amba. Katz is impressed by what Veysey, now his landlord, accomplished with Church + State, a two-building apartment complex Veysey, his wife, the architect Marika Shioiri-Clark, and their partner Michael Panzica developed on West 29th Street next to Amba. Katz calls Veysey and Shioiri-Clark “the most creative couple I’ve ever met.” Talk about birds of a feather. js

tepping into the main lobby of Beachwood Apartments by Albion, a visitor is struck by clean contemporary lines with touches of homeyness and references to – and a reverence for – Cleveland. In the lobby of the east building, showcasing a boutique artisan style, there are coffee-table books, among them “Ohio in Photographs” and “Faces of Cleveland.” There is also a fireplace, a flat-screen television and glass windows offering natural light. Among the soft touches are color schemes in grays and pinks, a fainting chair along with overstuffed lounge-style armchairs, and display shelves with objets d’art. Photographs of Cleveland sports figures and celebrities, including Halle Berry, hang in the common corridor. Village Green Management works to enhance the environment by offering social opportunities for residents to connect in the club room. “We often host monthly residential events in this space,” Ginley says. “That’s when we bring the community together twice a month. If they would want to meet their neighbors, we’ll host a wind-down Wednesday, a pizza party, things like that, just to show them our appreciation for choosing our community as their home.” Giving that room a sense of place are black and white photographs of Cleveland landmarks, including the interior of the Old Arcade. While residents may reserve use of the club room for four hours for a $350 fee and additional security deposit, use of outdoor common spaces are open to residents for use on a firstcome, first-served basis. “Many residents have hosted a private party in the club room

area for a birthday, anniversary or a holiday,” Ginley says. The patio area off the club room has been landscaped with shrubbery, grasses and Japanese maple trees. Urns are planted with pansies. A picnic table is located near a grilling station. There is also an outdoor fireplace. A round table set with eight chairs fits under a pergola. Stone paths are threaded through the outdoor common spaces outside the club room.

Back indoors, the east building has a locked Luxer mailroom for all delivered packages. It also has a fitness center, with views to the back patio. That room is open 24 hours a day and features Peloton machines, treadmills, free weights, floor-to-ceiling mirrors and a television. Beachwood Apartments by Albion has 29 different unit styles ranging from one- to four-bedrooms. The east building has about 90 units, the north and south buildings each have 50. The three garden villa-style buildings feature approximately 15 courtyard-style apartments each, near the complex’s pool. Underground parking garages are available for the complex, with parking available at a rate of $75 per month per vehicle. The model apartment is a two-bedroom, two-bathroom open-concept style in the east building with 1,255 square feet. “(Apartments) can be smaller, a little bit more conservative depending on how much space you’re looking for,” Ginley says. “Or they can be larger. Our two-bed styles specifically range from 1,050 square feet up to 1,610 depending on how much space someone may be looking for.” Rental prices change regularly under flex pricing. “I’ve seen the rates go up. I’ve also seen them go down,” Ginley says. “Beachwood, Ohio is very much in demand. So with any style – whether it be our one-, two-, three- or four-bed styles that we have to offer for the community – the rental rates could change every single day.”

IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR JUST THE RIGHT FLOORING – YOU NEED CHOICES.

Above: The club room. Below: A model unit’s kitchen and breakfast bar.

Vinyl plank flooring is featured in common areas of the apartment, with wall-to-wall carpeting in the bedrooms. The kitchen has granite counter tops, Shaker style soft-close cabinetry, subway tile backsplash, stainless steel Frigidaire appliances, gas range stove, microwave oven and dishwasher. The kitchen sink has a detachable sprayer. Apartments come with wooden blinds as window treatments. Each apartment has a Bosch energy-efficient washer and dryer. The guest bathroom has a tub-style bath and shower. The master bedroom includes a walk-in closet. While there is no balcony or patio access from the model unit, other apartment styles include balconies or a paved patio area, where residents may keep plants and outdoor furniture. At the patio near the heated swimming pool, there are rocking chairs, a fireplace with stones, table tennis, a bar area and a post-and-beam style pavilion, along with three covered cabanas. There are poolside chaise longues. Each year in June at the pool, there is a Splash Day in which residents are invited to support the Ronald McDonald House in Cleveland. With many layouts and choices of activities, residents of Beachwood Apartments by Albion might choose to lead an active and enjoyable life – both indoors and outside – without ever leaving home. js

Local destinations bring a taste of vacation at home By Ed Carroll

A

s the temperatures increase in Northeast Ohio, so do the opportunities to have fun. While many families plan vacations to take advantage of the summer break, you don’t need to escape the area for an entertaining and enriching summer experience. Summertime in Cleveland has plenty to explore, and with a little planning, you can easily make a day trip or weekend excursion out of it. Though there’s no shortage of options to choose from, Jstyle spoke with leaders from Play: CLE in Avon, the Great Lakes Science Center in downtown Cleveland, and the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage in Beachwood, who share what makes these locations excellent destinations for your next staycation. If you’re looking for a location that has a little bit of something for everyone, Play: CLE is waiting for you. Owner Greg Carlin says this is part of the draw of active entertainment. “We’re one of the few places that has multiple activities under one environment,” he says. “That in itself is really part of the attraction, it allows for different abilities and different skill sets for just about anyone.” Carlin says among the attractions Play: CLE offers are an indoor zip line, an all-ages ropes course, a parkour course, ninja courses, and rock-climbing walls for all skill levels. He also says in addition to its standard climbing walls, this summer brings a new climbing wall using augmented reality to gamify the climbing experience. The wall will display imagery onto the climbing wall that guests can interact with, both individually and competitively with another climber. The climbers won’t need to wear a virtual reality-style headset or any sort of eyewear to see the images, as they’re projected onto the wall using cameras and technology. “It’s a pretty new technology for this type of entertainment style of activity, and it’s one we’re really excited to introduce,” he said. “We’re one of only a few people in the country rolling this out this year. It’s a pretty innovative leap for climbing.” If you are seeking to mix in some education, the Great Lakes Science Center, located right on the shores of Lake Erie, should make your staycation itinerary. Scott Vollmer, vice president of education and exhibits, says in addition to regular exhibits it has monthly themes. June’s theme is the environment, with activities and exhibits ranging from the “Wild Weather Science Show,” focusing on rain, thunder, lightning and more, to going around the center testing the pH levels of different substances. July’s programming wasn’t yet set, but Vollmer says it will be space month. The center also has a marquee exhibit, “The Science of Rock N’ Roll,” which runs through Labor Day. This exhibit mixes science, technology, engineering and math activities with rock and roll music and lets attendees explore the process of recording music, learn about the physiological effects of listening to your favorite song, and find out how transistor radios and distortion pedals work. “It keeps you sharp,”Vollmer says. “You’re on summer vacation, you’re doing a lot of fun things, most of which probably aren’t planted

in the education side. So, I think it keeps you on your toes, it keeps you sharp, but also the exploration here, you can start to find an identity around STEM, around science, technology, engineering and math. Kids can have a pretty open mind in the summer when they’re not going through the grid of school. When they’re presented with interactive and fun activities around science, technology, engineering and math, they really get the confidence that they can be and do STEM all year round. That’s a critical learning objective.” You may decide you want to feel more connected with your heritage as you learn and play, which is one reason it’s great to have the Maltz Museum here. Dahlia Fisher, director of external relations, highlighted its current showcase exhibit, “Chagall for Children.” The exhibit celebrates the life and art of Marc Chagall, who is considered the quintessential Jewish artist of the 21st century, she says. A hands-on exhibit specially designed for small bodies, ages 2 to 12, Fisher says kids can touch and play with the art in the exhibit. “It’s actually 14 exploration stations, and each station features a replica of one of Chagall’s famous artworks, paired with a little quote – which is so charming,” she notes. “It has the name and year the piece was created, and also an interactive that mimics the energy and meaning of the piece in some way where the kids are touching and playing with the concept of the painting.” She says one example includes a Chagall painting made into puzzle pieces. Kids can re-arrange the pieces to create a new painting. Another station showcases stained glass on a light board, and kids can re-create the painting while switching the light board on and off to see the impact on the glass and art. One of Fisher’s favorites uses a specialty cape, which the kids put on and use to blend into a painting projected onto the screen. “They actually become part of the scene,” she says. “It’s really cool, they get a kick out of it.” js
