Wedding season is here As we wrap up this fall issue of Jstyle Weddings, I’m in the middle of a year in which I’ve been to more weddings than the last almost 10 years combined.

I’ve heard this “year of weddings” happens to many people in their late 20s or early 30s, but until now I’ve somehow managed to attend less than a handful of weddings in the last several years – likely due in part to the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced many to postpone bigger weddings.Among my five weddings this year –which I know, by no means, is a lot by some standards – is most notably, my sister’s. Lisa’s wedding on Sept. 3 at the Glendale Lyceum in Cincinnati is also the first time I’ll be in a wedding party, and as maid of honor. And even though I’ve been editing this magazine for almost three years now, due to the pandemic, there is still so much I didn’t know about actually planning a wedding.

PUBLICATION COMPANY

It all started in June 2021, when I planned a trip to New York City to visit Lisa and her then-boyfriend, Nik. A few weeks after I bought my plane ticket, Nik called and told me he was planning to propose during my trip. He was hoping I would covertly assist in getting Lisa to the spot of choice and take photos when he got down on one knee. While they had been looking at rings and knew they wanted to get engaged soon, Nik, especially, and I were nervous about making Lisa suspicious of exactly when it was coming. Every time I spoke with her around that time, I thought carefully through almost each word I said. Lisa was indeed surprised when Nik proposed at Washington Square Park on June 5, 2021. I used my photography skills I’ve learned here at Jstyle to take tons of Jstyle Weddings Editor Amanda Koehn, right, with her sister Lisa Koehn at Lisa’s bridal shower June 19, 2022 at Punderson State Park in Newbury Township. quick pictures from different angles and get lots of reaction shots. Although most of my job was taking photos and trying not to slip up, Nik put so much effort into the day – he even carried around a backpack for some time leading up to it so she wouldn’t be tipped off when he brought it that day, hiding a diamond ring inside. That’s part of the reason I wanted to include a story in this issue about planning a proposal, as there are many details involved that certainly need careful preparation. Then came the long stretch toward planning the wedding. While my role has mostly been being somewhat of a sounding board for the couple making the big choices, I never realized before to what extent a wedding is a whole family affair. Nearly every conversation I’ve had with Lisa or my mother over the past year has involved some detail regarding the wedding. I flew to New York twice since last summer – once last October to help Lisa choose a wedding dress, and once this June for the bachelorette party. My mom and I also hosted Lisa’s wedding shower at Punderson State Park’s Manor House this June. Now, we are finally in the home stretch. While I’m excited, I’m also nervous about even the slightest potential mishaps and looking forward to breathing a sigh of relief afterward. And I’m certainly taking the advice in this magazine to heart, and sharing it with Lisa and the rest of my family. For me personally, reading our spotlights on local couples who were married in the last year gives a great glimpse into the most important considerations for the big day, as well as planning each detail. Also in this issue, you’ll read about a local floral arrangements, fashion, planning the planning a much smaller celebration, I hope the advice and details in this issue of Jstyle Weddings get you excited about your own

Amarriage proposal is naturally a special moment in a person’s life. It’s a momentous decision to spend the rest of your life with another person that you love. And understandably, many want to make sure the moment is even more memorable. There’salot to consider, even if you already know your partner can’t wait to say “yes,” from choosing a ring to selecting the perfect location and backdrop, to finding a photographer for capturing the memories, to trusting a planner to make sure the logistics are set and you haven’t forgotten anything. Jstyle Weddings spoke with professionals from various industries – a photographer, an event planner, a venue operator and a jeweler – about different aspects to consider as you prepare to pop the question to the love of your life.

RING SHOPPING

Pros share tips, considerations for planning a proposal

Popping the question

“Unlike a mall store, as an independent

Bruce Botnick, owner of Robert & Gabriel Jewelers in Lyndhurst, says for proposals today, there are typically “very few“Insurprises.”mostcases, (the couple visits) our store together and shops options together, and then frequently the purchaser would then excuse himself from the other party and consummate things in the moment or a quick follow-up a day later, without the other person being here to observe,” he says. “So, it’s sort of a strange process. But I think total surprise doesn’t really happen very often anymore.”

Botnick, who estimates that Robert & Gabriel Jewelers has sold in excess of 40,000 engagement rings in its 98-year history, says when it comes to the rings, usually the purchaser has some idea of what the other person wants and they are able to customize jewelry for the occasion.

THE PERFECT BACKDROP

A memorable backdrop and setting can make the moment all the more special when you ask someone for their hand in marriage. Luckily for those in Northeast Ohio, there is no shortage of beautiful space to enjoy and make a memory to last for a lifetime; at least 24,000 acres, to be specific, in the Cleveland Metroparks system throughout the area.

Jstyle Weddings 2022 13jstylemagazine.com

jeweler we offer pretty good services,” he says. “I’d say maybe 30% of the rings we sell are custom made for customers. Fortunately, I have good craftsmen who can easily take an idea and turn it into an image in about a week, and then we turn it into a ring in about 10 days.”

PICTURE PERFECT Once you have the ring and the spot picked out, you’ll undoubtedly want to find someone to help you remember the moment forever. You could ask a friend or family member to be there to record or take pictures of the proposal, but hiring a professional provides many benefits and a sense of security that your moment is beautifully documented. Beth Glorioso, owner and photographer

He says other than proposals at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, which requires an admission fee for entry most of the time, areas of the parks don’t need to be reserved ahead of time. “It’s finding that intimate location where you have that connection with your significant other,” he says. “But also trying to secure a location. Most of the time, couples want family and friends to participate, so they want to find an area for 10 to 20 people.”

Photo / Elizabeth Glorioso Photography Photos / Robert & Gabriel Jewelers

Sam Cario, director of events and experiences at the Cleveland Metroparks, says typically when people propose in the Cleveland Metroparks, it’s because they have a specific connection to that park or district. He says the willow tree at Edgewater Park on Cleveland’s west side and Squire’s Castle in Willoughby Hills are two popular proposal spots. “For us, it’s all about our backdrops,” he says. “We’ve got fantastic natural backdrops – that’s exactly what couples are looking for.”

She says often, people don’t consider the smaller details of a proposal, which is why it can be handy to have an event planner with you. “Let’s say they want to be at the top of the building, it might be loud, or you might need to get permission from whoever owns the building or the company,” she says. “Or if it’s a public space, they may need a permit. It depends on who they are and what they want, and then it’s really making it happen. … I think it’s really thinking through the details, and I think that’s my job, to think through the details so that everything comes off right and everything works.”

PLANNING FOR DETAILS

Photo / Elizabeth Glorioso Photography

It may seem like a lot of spinning plates to keep in the air if you’re planning to propose, but you can find help. Kim Singerman, founder and event director at Noteworthy Events, which operates in Northeast Ohio and the Cincinnati area, says as a planner, one of the first steps she’d take is to sit down with the client and get details.“I’dwant to know an overview of what it is that person wants,” she says. “I like to propose ideas, and then see how they feel about those ideas. And then the next step would be me making calls and putting things into place, to the point where then we arrange everything and are able to execute at that specific location.”

“Do they want their proposal to be intimate, or do they want onlookers to be looking on?” she asks. “Then, you’re adding a photographer into the mix to document the special moment, there may be bystanders in the background of your photos, things like that. “You may or may not consider those to be obvious when you’re looking. Some couples want a very public proposal –they’re very outgoing and want that kind of moment in front of everybody – where other couples might be a little more private and want a private moment between the two people, so that’s a consideration.” She says there are other logistics important to consider, such as lighting if you’re planning to propose somewhere like a dark restaurant, or ensuring there are unobstructed views of the proposal. She would sort through all those details during a consultation before the proposal, Glorioso says.

at Elizabeth Glorioso Photography in Cleveland, says it’s important to consider the venue where the proposal is happening, as it can affect the photos. People often don’t consider the number of bystanders who will be in the area, and potentially in the photo.

JAMIE & JARED SPOTLIGHT Jamie Bergsman & Jared Unger Wedding Day June 25, 2022 Sapphire Creek Winery & Gardens | Chagrin Falls Today Ages: 31 & 32 Hometown: Solon Kayla Yanus / Kayla Rae Photography

This is just a funny story outside our wedding: Jared is also Jewish and I went on Birthright in 2013 (when we were still just friends). I was bugging him to go with me, and he didn’t. He still says he regrets this. Any last advice for future couples? We had a larger guest list and it was important to us that we talk to every table there. We had heard from so many friends and family that time does not always allow it. We wrote letters to each table, addressing each guest and thanking them. Some tables had people that had never met, so we shared favorite memories to break the ice. We had TKO (Entertainment) announce to everyone once cocktail hour was over to have one person read the letters aloud. Guests loved the letters and said it was so unique and personal. We’re glad we did this because we did not have time to see every table, but this was our way of reaching each guest and making them feel loved.

17 years When did you know you wanted to marry your partner?

Jared: When we started talking, Jamie was very hesitant to start dating. We were best friends and she didn’t want to lose that connection. I was scared, too, but wanted to give her space and time to figure out what she wanted. When we did start dating, I told her if we do date, I’m doing this to get married. I knew that might scare her, but I wanted to show her I was serious. We work so effortlessly together and helped each other through a lot. Once I saw how well we worked together, I knew she was the one. What was the best part of wedding planning? Just the overall excitement leading up to the big day. We had a long engagement due to COVID and had a lot of time to plan and take in all the feelings. My (Jamie’s) mom always tells people, “There was no drama with anything – it was easy.” Planning should be low stress and fun!

How long did you know each other before you got married?

Countless people told us to take in our big day and make time for just us two. Our wedding was very picture heavy, and that was intentional, as our photographer was (the best). We did have a few moments to ourselves, which was nice. What was the most fun or interesting Jewish aspect of your wedding? We had a non-traditional wedding ceremony. My (Jamie’s) father is Jewish and my mother Catholic. Growing up, I always had both religious influences, which was really valuable, but we kept our ceremony neutral.

-

How did you meet? We met in high school, we shared a class together and sat across from one another. Do you have any interesting stories to share about getting to know one another? We shared the same friend group for all of high school, but never really spoke. We started hanging out summer of sophomore year of college when we were the only two in our friend group to not have internships for the summer. We became best friends that summer.

“The entire day was incredible. Sapphire’s gardens are breathtaking. They have twinkle lights set up overlooking their wooded property. Jared and I took a moment to soak in the beauty and just appreciate the day.” Jamie

Jstyle Weddings 2022 17jstylemagazine.com

Jamie: I knew I wanted to marry Jared shortly into dating him. I was hesitant to start dating because he was my best friend. I broke up with my boyfriend and he helped me create a Bumble account. We were hanging out a lot, too, as we lived five streets over in Lakewood. I remember, I told him I got a lot of matches and he told me a few days later, “I don’t want to lose you to a Bumble boy.” There was no specific moment I knew I wanted to marry him, I think hearing him say something so silly was endearing. I slowly realized he had everything I was looking for and more. He also told me the day we started dating, “If we do this, I’m in it to marry you.” Something like that would typically send me running, but I was fine with it.

How did the COVID-19 pandemic a ect your wedding plan and wedding day? We got engaged at the end of the summer in 2020. We wanted to get married that following August. We toured and fell in love with Sapphire Creek and they didn’t have any available dates for 2021, so we held off. Besides that, things ran smoothly. Was there any spot-on advice you received prior to the big day, either in terms of the wedding or lasting relationship?

• Accommodations: AC Hotel by Marriott at Pinecrest in Orange

• Extras: Jared made our cake accents. We have two dogs, Sailor and Ace. Ace is a 5-year-old black lab/shepherd mix and we planned on having him in the ceremony. Once we got Sailor, a 1-year-old German shepherd/aussie mix, it was clear that he was too much dog for a formal event. We didn’t want to exclude him, so Jared made clay gurines to go on our cake instead (bottom right photo)

As the popular tradition goes, “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue,” this family heirloom continues to serve as that something old or borrowed for those who carry it on their wedding day.

When Ruth Klinger Borstein walked down the aisle in 1932, chiffon handkerchief in hand, she began a tradition that has lasted 90 years, crossed four generations and connected more than 85 brides. After her own wedding, she passed the handkerchief on to friends and eventually her daughter, Joan Borstein Rogoff – the 12th bride to carry that handkerchief when she was married at the Tudor Arms Hotel in Cleveland on March 11, 1956, at the age of 20.

Rogoff, now 86, carried on her mother’s tradition of lending the hanky to her friends, and passing it down to her daughters, Debbie Rogoff Aronson and Marci Rogoff Moses, and daughterin-law, Neela Levey Rogoff. When Liza Friedman Aronson married Chad, the son of Debbie Rogoff Aronson, Aug. 19, 2017 at the Cuyahoga County Courthouse, she became the 84th bride and the first in the fourth-generation to carry the hanky.“It’s got more meaning than I can even say because to see it is still going down, and it’s almost tattered in spots,” Rogoff says. “I completely cherish it, and I just gave it to my daughter here a few (years) ago for her to be in charge of it now,” referring to

For 90 years, a local family’s brides – and close friends – have passed down a special heirloom Borrowed, Neela Levey Rogo , with the handkerchief exposed out of her sleeve, when she married Eric Rogo on May 1 at Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple in Beachwood. I would say the American Jewish community, our families came here, particularly mine more recently, with nothing. Some other families (in America), they always have heirlooms and things that they can pass on. So, it’s nice that nally our people, we’ve been around long enough here that we have our own heirlooms, our own tradition that we’re able to bring and continue on here.” Liza Friedman Aronson

As keeper, she says she enjoys presenting the heirloom to friends and family, explaining and bringing the tradition to more brides.

BECOMING PART OF THE FAMILY

While most brides carry the hanky wrapped around their bouquet, when Neela Levey Rogoff, 49, married Eric Rogoff on May 1 at Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple in Beachwood with their reception at Elle Restaurant & Lounge in Solon, she tucked it in her bolero sleeve, letting it hang out by her hand. She was the 85th bride to carry it. “When Marci and Eric told me about it, to me, it meant that I’m part of the family to marry a brother,” she says. “(Eric is) the

When Debbie Rogoff Aronson, 61, carried it at her Aug. 12, 1984 wedding at Landerhaven at the age of 23, it was special for both families involved as her husband’s aunt was her mother, Joan Rogoff’s best friend, and the hanky had been passed down and used by both families. The tradition has grown generation by generation, as friends pass the hanky down to their children. New friends are also welcomed to share in celebrating with the tradition. “This book will grow, God willing, and hopefully the hanky lasts,” Rogoff Aronson says. “And it will – even if it’s just a piece of it at some point.”

love of my life and it was just so special. … It meant so much to Eric, it meant so much to him for me to carry it, too. He’s like ‘You’re part of my family now.’”

Cohen, who was married Oct. 16, 1993 at Fairmount Temple. “And to be able to be a part of a huge tradition because it was so meaningful to Marci and her family.”

“To have an heirloom generally is very special,” says Liza Friedman Aronson, 29. “I would say the American Jewish community, our families came here, particularly mine more recently, with nothing. Some other families (in America), they always have heirlooms and things that they can pass on. So, it’s nice that finally our people, we’ve been around long enough here that we have our own heirlooms, our own tradition that we’re able to bring and continue on here.”

“When (friends) include you in their own family and their own traditions, it’s just so touching and it means so much,” says Miller

They added that it feels wonderful to be connected and join the family of all the brides who have carried the hanky. The women also look forward to having their daughters one day join in the tradition. “I’m thrilled when I see it all these years later because we’ve been married 66 years, so when I see it all these years later still being happily used,” it is clear the hanky and the family’s love is very treasured, Rogoff says. Over this year’s Fourth of July weekend, family and friends gathered to watch the 86th bride carry the hanky down the aisle, as Ruth Klinger Borstein had 90 years before, keeping the tradition alive. With the next generations eager to carry and pass on the heirloom to daughters and friends, the list will undoubtedly continue to grow in the years to come. js Fifteen of the 85 brides who carried the handkerchief at their weddings hold up the number corresponding with the order they carried it.

22 Jstyle Weddings 2022 jstylemagazine.com

Many in the Rogoff family and close friends are aware of the story behind the hanky and excited for the opportunity to carry and pass on the tradition, the women say. For friends or those marrying into the family, the hanky serves as the official seal that they are a part of the family and are connected to all the other brides that have come before and those who will come after them. For example, two of Rogoff Moses’ college friends, Amy Blocker Drechsler and Debbi Miller Cohen, were asked to carry the hanky in their weddings, becoming the 55th and 62nd brides, respectively, to do so.

She says there is a clip in her wedding video of Rogoff Moses explaining the tradition and the women who have carried the hanky.“Inever really had lifelong friends or bonds, and I didn’t grow up in a Jewish area, and this was really the first time I felt that kind of community,” says Blocker Drechsler, whose wedding was Nov. 30, 1991 at Fairmount Temple. “This just helps solidify and give me something I never ever had or felt before in my life –this Jewish connection, friendship connection.”

Most of the weddings that have featured the hanky have been Jewish weddings, which adds another layer to the treasured heirloom.

Cleveland Cavaliers power forward Kevin Love and model and entrepreneur Kate Bock were married in a ceremony with nods to her Jewish heritage and celebrated with an Old Hollywood glam, old-school New York style bash. The wedding took place June 25 at the New York Public Library, Vogue and other news outlets reported. Their ceremony honored Bock’s Jewish heritage, as the couple was wrapped in a tallit. They also signed a ketubah and stood under a white cherry-blossom chuppah. It was officiated by Love’s agent, Jeff Schwartz, and Bock wore two dresses designed by Jewish gown designer Danielle Frankel, The Forward reported. For the ceremony, she wore a dress by Ralph Lauren and worked with the fashion designer’s team to bring the concept to life. Love was also dressed by RalphTheLauren.pairmet in 2015, after being set up by a photographer who worked with both of them and thought they would hit it off, according to Vogue. They got engaged in January 2021. The couple broke tradition by getting ready and arriving at their wedding together. “Kevin and I didn’t feel it was important to keep things separate,” Bock told People magazine. “We planned the wedding together, got ready together and went to the library together.”

Kevin Love, Kate Bock marry in old Hollywood glam celebration

Celebrities like former Cavs teammates LeBron James, Channing Frye and Richard Jefferson were in attendance.“Itwasalot of work, but we had so much fun doing it,” Bock told Vogue. “We love being creative, and it was amazing to see the process of how our dream celebration came to life. I create mood boards all the time for my brand Love Kate, so making them for my wedding was natural for me. I would create mood board after mood board and ask for Kevin to provide his input. We both envisioned an old-school New York City, Great Gatbsy-inspired, black-and-white ball for the big day. That was the easy part! The hard part was just making the small detailed decisions – whether it was a specific linen, the seating chart or where to get ready. Our amazing wedding planner Marcy and her team guided us along and helped us through everything.” -Amanda Koehn

Do you have any interesting stories to share about getting to know one another?

What was the best part of wedding planning?

Were there any conflicts between the two of you or your families in the planning process? Did either of you have to make any sacrifices? Even before the pandemic, we had talked about wanting to have a smaller and more intimate wedding. An intimate wedding was the most comfortable for us. When we announced our engagement to our friends and families and told them that we were planning to have an intimate wedding, there was some disappointment from them. They were hoping that we would have a larger/more traditional wedding. Luckily, they were understanding and supported how we wanted to have our wedding. What was the most fun or interesting Jewish aspect of your wedding/partnership? It was important for us to put thought into our wedding ceremony and incorporate both of our traditions. Since we come from different cultures, it was essential to make our wedding our own with traditions that were meaningful to us. I was able to integrate different Jewish traditions and people from my Jewish upbringing. We took a “Planning your Jew-ish wedding” class with Rabbi Chase Foster from jHUB. Chase is my camp friend from Goldman Union Camp Institute. This class helped us to figure out how we wanted the overall feeling of our ceremony to be and what parts of the Jewish culture and Anthony’s Lao culture that we could integrate. We had Renee Blau from Temple Am Shalom as our officiant. Renee was a big part of my Jewish education growing up and knows my family well.

In the first couple years of dating, we went on a hiking trip to Zion National Park. At the beginning of the Angel’s Landing hike, we went off the main trail and found a log to sit on near the river while we ate a snack. Before we knew it, there was a large mule deer that came from the tall brush, and walked within 10 feet from us. We stared at the deer and the deer stared at us. We were not sure what was going to happen and it was quite scary at the moment. Luckily, the deer was not interested in us and then walked across the river. Four years later, we went back to Zion National Park as it had become one of our favorite places. We went to find the same spot where we encountered the deer and that was where Anthony proposed. How long did you know each other before you got married? We knew each other for six years before getting married. When did you know you wanted to marry your partner?

Rachel: Anthony and I went on a two-and-half month trip to Central/Eastern Europe. During that trip, we made an effort to travel to different cities/countries that have significance in the Jewish culture. Some of the sites we visited were Auschwitz in Oswiecim, Poland, Dohany Street Synagogue in Budapest, Hungary and the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Visiting these sites created a lot of good conversations between Anthony and me. This was the first time I was really open about my Jewish culture and saw how accepting and interested Anthony was. This, along with becoming closer by being together 24/7 through travel, made me realize I wanted Anthony to be my forever travel buddy.

The best parts of wedding planning were working together on a big project and getting to know the Cleveland area better. We grew a lot as a couple with our communication skills and learned more about one another’s needs/wants. I am from the Cleveland area and had lived out of state for over a decade. Anthony is from the Minneapolis area. Through researching various vendors, restaurants and visiting potential wedding venues, we learned more about the Cleveland area. The wedding planning was a good opportunity for us to discover Cleveland and to find unique restaurants and fun things to do.

How did you meet? We have an inside joke that we met while in college because a friend asked us where we met and if we went to the same college. We both went to the same college, but at different times – I (Rachel) attended University of Central Florida for undergrad and Anthony for grad school. Really, we met on a dating app. Anthony has the habit of making pun jokes. The initial message Anthony sent to me was “Since we are a match, does that mean that we are an inter-Rachel couple?” I thought this was pretty forward, also creative and thoughtful, and thought to myself, “I have to meet this guy.”

Anthony: I knew that I wanted to marry Rachel when she supported me through a career change into technology. I left a good position working in finance and I was nervous about the transition. I attended an intensive software development program and there had been a great deal of late night studying and questioning of my abilities. Rachel’s encouragement and knowing that we were going through this together allowed me to excel in the program and land a rewarding career as a software developer. Going through the program with Rachel’s assistance reinforced to me that we work well as a team and that she is always there to help achieve my goals.

Some spot-on advice we received was to pick the most important aspects to us and design our wedding around those. No matter how much you prepare, the day won’t go 100% as planned and things will always happen to make the day go awry. The most important part of the wedding is having those important to you there to celebrate. Make sure to take continuous moments to be present, look around and soak it in. For us, we actually did soak it in as it rained on our wedding day and my dress got wet during pictures.

How did the COVID-19 pandemic affect your wedding plan and wedding day? We started wedding planning in early 2021. At the time, many places were still closed/under restrictions. We were unsure if the places we were looking at would still in fact be open or what kind of restrictions would be imposed. Was there any spot-on advice you received prior to the big day, either in terms of the wedding or lasting relationship?

“The best part of our wedding was integrating both of our cultural traditions and involving our intimate guest list in the traditions. Performing the Baci ceremony underneath the chuppah held by our siblings was special. The Baci ceremony is a Laotian tradition of tying strings around one’s wrists to commemorate happy occasions. The Baci strings were made by Anthony’s mother and the portable chuppah was made by my mother.” - Rachel

By Amanda Koehn T ake inspiration from the season for fall weddings this year. Colors like marigold, cranberry, peach, black and earth tones set the mood. Then, incorporate autumn natural elements like pumpkins, acorns and sage, and terra cotta ceramics and festive candles. For wedding dresses, consider leaf-like detailing, flowing sleeves and soft romantic touches. Suits in earthy shades can also contribute to a festive fall style.

Classic white cakes with white frosting can be the perfect way to tie together any wedding. These traditional cakes are still going strong, says Jay Davis, vice president of operations at Davis Bakery in Woodmere and Warrensville Heights. “A lot of people just really find our white cake to be delicious,” Davis says. “We add a touch of almond flavor to our white cake, so it gives it a nice, distinct flavor.”

By Meghan Walsh At most weddings, the couple and guests alike eagerly anticipate the cutting of the cake. Today, bakeries are serving up cakes and small desserts galore to appeal to a variety of tastes. From large, traditional wedding cakes to pastries and macarons, two local bakeries offer their ideas for something tasty for everyone.

Decadent Desserts

Overall, Davis says traditional flavors and designs take the cake.“Iwould say that we’re still seeing a vast majority of our cakes are white and elegant, white buttercream iced,” he says.

Occasionally, some people want a fruit filling, such as lemon or another citrus, between the cake layers. Davis says he has noticed couples seeking smaller cakes lately, sometimes for the sole purpose of having a cake cutting ceremony.“Then, they’re kind of accompanying it with an eclectic mix of desserts, whether it’s our cream cheese pastries or our mini coconut bars to go with that small cake,” he explains. Couples also frequently accentuate their cakes with floral details.“Alot of people want nice floral arrangements with the real, live flowers that the florist will place on the cake, and it really does give the cakes a nice, elegant look,” he says.

Some may say the best part of a meal is dessert, and weddings usually have some sort of baked goods to satisfy a guest’s sweet tooth. But in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, weddings have gotten smaller and henceforth, so have the cakes. “Everyone has sort of shifted towards this smaller tiered cake with a lot of mini desserts,” says Brynn Keefe, cake shop manager at Luna Bakery in Cleveland Heights and Moreland Hills. “We don’t have a lot of big wedding cakes that serve three or four hundred people.”Keefe says a lot of people are looking for fruit-based flavors this time of year, such as lemon-raspberry. Hazelnut-mocha is also a trendingToday’sflavor.couples have been in search of non-traditional sweet treats, such as mini tarts, macarons, cookies and other desserts that are more casual, she adds. “People are really looking for alternatives to cake, which Luna does offer, and so I feel like that is something more (popular) this year than we did in years past,” Keefe says. js

How did you meet? Through mutual friends. Do you have any interesting stories to share about getting to know one another? We met through mutual friends at Kent State University, although Kevin had already graduated college and I (Samantha) was finishing my senior year. Kevin came back to visit friends during Kent’s homecoming weekend. We didn’t get an opportunity to talk a lot that weekend, but it was just enough to spark interest in each other. A couple months later after a couple more encounters with mutual friends, Kevin finally asked me out on a first date. We went to Deagan’s Kitchen & Bar in Lakewood for dinner followed by bowling at Madison-Square Lanes. This restaurant is also where we had dinner the night we got engaged. One of our favorite things to do together is travel. After only a few months of dating we traveled to Florida with the same two friends that we met through. That same year we took a weekend trip to Pittsburgh, Pa., and Gatlinburg, Tenn. Over the next few years, we traveled to Washington, D.C., Surfside, S.C., San Antonio, Texas, Newport, R.I., and Charleston, S.C. And finally, our favorite trip of them all was our honeymoon to Maui, Hawaii. We hope to continue traveling the world together! How long did you know each other before you got married?

Samantha: After our first few dates it was very obvious that Kevin and I shared something special and unique. It was and always has been so effortless between us and from the start our relationship has been filled with so much laughter.

Advice for our wedding day: Don’t forget to take little moments to stop and take it all in, the day goes by so quickly. Advice for marriage: Never stop dating each other. What was the most fun or interesting Jewish aspect of your wedding/partnership? The chuppah and breaking of the glass because we love the symbolism it represents. We also loved the Jewish hora because it was such a fun way to get all of our friends and family on the dance floor!

“Our ‘ rst look’ was a really special moment for us. It was so nice to step away from everyone and everything for a little while, and have time together. And we read our vows privately at that time! But overall, we were so incredibly happy to have our favorite people all gathered in one place, that really meant a lot to us.” - Samantha

Kevin: I knew shortly after our first date because it was so easy to be myself around Samantha in a way I’ve never felt before. What was the best part of wedding planning? It’s hard to pick just one. We loved all the celebrations with friends and family along the way – dress shopping, the bridal shower, bachelorette and bachelor parties. And it was also so special to see all the little details slowly come together leading up to our big day. Was there any spot-on advice you received prior to the big day, either in terms of the wedding or lasting relationship?

Today, the biggest trend in wedding receptions is to individualize them to reflect the couple’s vision – whether that be black-tie formal, barnyard chic, outdoor summer garden party or somewhere in between. Gone are the days of cookie-cutter receptions where the food, flowers, decor and playlists were all similar from wedding to wedding, local industry experts“Everysay.bride and groom are different. And the goal of today’s wedding receptions is to reflect that individuality,” says Carla Randau, director of private dining for Savour Hospitality Group’s St. Clair Ballroom in downtown Cleveland. “Some brides choose to have their event at a ballroom like ours, with gorgeous floor-toceiling windows overlooking Lake Erie and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, while others may think that an outdoor location such as Patterson Fruit Farm is the perfect venue for their special day.”

Websites like Etsy have really opened the door for personalization of traditional wedding decor.”

Party Perfection

“Personalized touches are a very special way for a couple to share a unique experience with their guests,” she says. “From a custom dance floor monogram to a fun wedding hashtag, each offers a different way to share the couple’s style. Instead of numbering tables in the traditional way, naming them with the places the couple has visited and creating custom signs is a fun way to personalize something that is normally more generic.

Tammy Bloebaum, director of catering at Cleveland Marriott East in Warrensville Heights, emphasizes that this focus on individuality is reflected not only in the venue choice, but also in the originality and distinctiveness of reception decor.

PARTY SETTING THE SCENE

“On the whole, receptions include less formalities than they did 10 years ago,” he says. “Bridal party dances, mother-son and fatherdaughter dances, removing and throwing the garter, and even throwing the bouquet to unmarried female guests are no longer part of most receptions. Receptions have become more danceparty focused. After dinner, it is all about the entertainment. That’s St. Clair Ballroom in downtown Cleveland. Photo / Genevieve Nisly Photography

Pete Troy, owner and founder of Troy Entertainment, an entertainment and event production company based in Strongsville, says lately, parties have trended less toward classic traditions and more toward dancing and having fun.

Although receptions strive to reflect a couple’s vision, it is also vital to balance their wishes with the needs of their guests. “It is important that when you invite people to celebrate with you, you make sure that they are engaged and having fun,” Troy says. “We do that by creating energy and excitement in the room while including everybody. It is imperative that your entertainment focuses on that balance. The right mix of lighting, music and reacting to the mood of the night as it unfolds creates the magic that guests remember.” js St. Clair Ballroom. 52 Jstyle Weddings 2022 jstylemagazine.com what keeps the guests there. And if the bride and groom are out on the dance floor having a good time, the guests will follow.” Reception food has also evolved. “Twenty or 30 years ago, reception food was all about the volume – the more the better,” Randau explains. “That led to big buffets overladen with choices. Now, brides are trending toward an ultimate culinary experience. Everyone is a foodie nowadays, and receptions reflect that.” She adds that their culinary team can offer steaks and sushi from the Marble Room or homemade pasta from Il Venetian, two of Savour Hospitality’s upscale restaurants, just to name a few of the many possibilities. But no matter the style or vibe the couple is trying to create, or what menu they will serve to their guests, “first impressions are everything. It’s the warm feeling people get from great service, wonderful food and ambiance that guests remember. They make the night magical,” RandauBloebaumsays. adds, “A well-planned timeline can also truly make a difference in the flow and feel of the reception. Working with your planner and DJ and/or band to plan out the night ensures that no dead zones ruin the momentum of the party.” Making sure guests are physically comfortable and there is enough room for them to move about and enjoy the night is also crucial, says Bloebaum.

“The Cleveland Marriott East offers flexible seating styles so family and friends can enjoy the event together,” she explains. “In addition, our cocktail reception area has ample seating as well so that guests won’t have to find themselves juggling plates and drinks while finding nowhere to rest their feet.”
