About the Cause
The Mandel JCC is a nonpro t community center serving people in all stages of life. The J provides engaging and enriching programs and services to meet the needs of the community. The J prides itself on being inclusive, open and an inviting place where everyone is welcome.
For more than 75 years, The J has impacted people of all ages and abilities. From the participants in our early childhood program, to youth and teens gaining independence through our performing arts and summer camps, to active adults looking to stay healthy in body and mind, The J has programs bene ting all stages of life.
Like music, Mandel JCC provides the opportunity to bridge gaps between diverse groups and create connections among individuals who might not otherwise meet. Funds raised through Shining Star CLE help enhance vital programs for youth to aging adults in a setting that fosters a strong sense of belonging and invites others to be part of the community. Shining Star CLE celebrates and supports talented teen vocalists from Northeast Ohio’s high schools. Beyond the expert coaching, mentorship and opportunity for these budding performers to grace the big stage for a chance to earn life-changing scholarships, Shining Star CLE is now the annual fundraiser for Mandel JCC.
About the Audition Process
Round 1: Video Auditions
April 1-June 30, 2024
High school students with graduation dates of 2025-2028 from Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, Stark, Summit and Wayne counties were eligible to upload their video auditions to shiningstarcle. org, singing the song of their choice. Students were given a time limit of three minutes maximum and the choice to perform with piano accompaniment, personal instrument usage or a capella. A group of local music professionals reviewed the online submissions from 146 students representing 73 schools and selected the top students who advanced to the next round.
Round 2: Virtual Auditions
July 13-14, 2024
Eighty-two students were invited to individual Zoom auditions where they performed their songs live before a team of local music professionals. From this group, 25 students were invited to Semi nals.
Round 3: Semi nals
July 28, 2024
Twenty- ve students spent the day at Mandel JCC working on their songs under the direction of the judges, music director and artistic director. After the students’ in-person auditions, the judges selected the Top 10 Finalists and two alternates to perform in The Finals.
Round 4: The Finals
September 22, 2024
The Top 10 Finalists perform center stage at Playhouse Square! A multipiece band joins the students in the group performances and their solo performances.
Finalists will be judged by independent, accomplished music professionals from all over the country who are quali ed in a wide variety of musical genres including, but not limited to, pop, R&B, classical, jazz and musical theatre. Her bands have opened for wellknown national acts such as The Temptations, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Donnie Iris and the Cruisers, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, Hall and Oates, Eddie Money and Michael Stanley and the Resonators.
Mandel JCC is delighted to have Connor Bogart O’Brien return as artistic director for his fth year! A native of Ashtabula, Connor grew up as a classical violinist before ultimately studying vocal performance/opera at the Eastman School of Music in New York. During his time at Eastman, he was accepted into the nationally ranked male a capella group, The University of Rochester Yellowjackets (as seen on NBC’s The Sing O ) as a featured soloist.
Connor has been a soloist with the Cleveland Pops Orchestra, National Repertory Orchestra, New Haven Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and the Cleveland Orchestra. Two full-length albums followed, which led to performing as the opening act on more than 20 national tours including Jim Brickman, Huey Lewis and the News, Rick Spring eld, Hall & Oates and Mariah Carey.
Connor can be heard singing and recording jingles for companies such as Hasbro Toys and American Greetings, as well as in more than 32 countries worldwide as a headlining act on Princess, Holland America, Celebrity and Royal Caribbean cruise lines.
A round of applause for the Mandel JCC Shining Star finalists. And everyone in your audience.
Music illuminates the human experience. It connects us to each other, brings us closer, and reminds us of the incredible heights we’re capable of reaching. So from all of us at Huntington, a big thank you to Mandel JCC for reminding us how brightly we all can shine.

A Note from the Artistic Director
Welcome to Shining Star CLE 2024! A celebration of music, young artists, our community and the power of giving back.
What a year it has been. We are so thankful to have found a new home at Mandel JCC, which can continue our long tradition of melding music, scholarship and performance, all while giving so much back to the community. This competition not only gives our student performers a chance to grace the professional stages of Playhouse Square, but also a chance at a life-changing scholarship for college.
The singers you will hear tonight come from all walks of life and the majority are looking towards the same goal of being able to study music beyond high school. Funds raised tonight will not just make this a reality for some, but also make it possible for others.
I train these young artists to let themselves disappear into their song, the melody or the character. I coach them to tell a story above all else and to leave the worries and fears they may have in the theater wings. To trust the process and remember their training. I tell them we’ve got this, and we do. You, me and everyone who contributed tonight are holding them up so that they can let go and dream big. And dream big they shall.
Enjoy the show,
Connor Bogart O’Brien

It was a shock going from a big school in Texas to small town Newton Falls. She started singing at school events, sports games and assemblies. These opportunities led her to singing around town at the Eclipse event, the Memorial Day event and the Fourth of July event. She takes music lessons at Portage County Music and would like to thank her teacher Julia for introducing her to Shining Star CLE. She is also thankful to her community, teachers and principal at Newton Falls High School, and her mom for always supporting her.

Some of her favorite musicals are Mean Girls and Matilda. Natalie would like to thank all of the teachers and directors who have helped her develop artistically. She would especially like to thank her music directors Dr. Sloane Artis and Debra Fleming, as well as her vocal coaches Shiloh Hart and Dr. Amy Wooley. A special thanks to Natalie’s friends and family who have encouraged her to continue to grow.

“Hillel meant a lot to me over my college experience. In the midst of all the craziness in the world, it was a place I could have meaningful conversations and just feel comfortable. From getting involved with Jewish Learning Fellowship to serving on the student board, my experiences at the Hillel house are some of my most cherished memories at Elon.” —
