Community News Torah Nursery continues to expand and grow LISA MATKOWSKY CLEVELAND KESHER

orah Nursery at 1980 S. Green Road in South Euclid has been growing rapidly, creating the need to expand its building. The nursery school is for ages 6 weeks to 5 years old. Torah Nursery was originally started in a University Heights basement in 1979 by members of Chabad House of Cleveland before eventually moving to Case Western Reserve University’s campus in Cleveland’s University Circle neighborhood. It 1981, it left that site as well, and occupied various locations over the years. In 1995, Chemda and Rabbi Elly Jacobs arrived from Crown Heights in Brooklyn, N.Y., where Chemda had been teaching preschool after fleeing from Iran because of the revolution in 1978. The couple had been thinking of opening a preschool when they learned that the Chabad preschool in Cleveland was experiencing a change of hands, and they decided to make the move. After taking over, the couple held classes at Taylor Road Synagogue, the former Mayfield JCC, Oheb Zedek Cedar Sinai Synagogue, and most recently in their Cleveland Heights home. “We were constantly looking for the right space,” Director Chemda Jacobs told Cleveland Kesher. The nursery started with about 10 children, gradually growing, from about 2000 through 2012. They bought the current building in 2012, when they had three classes with 36 children. Soon after, they did some renovations to accommodate their growth to five classes of 60 children. Then they added mobile units when their registration expanded to 85 students and they completed the most recent renovations in 2022 for their current enrollment of 120. When asked about the reason for the program’s popularity, Executive Director Rabbi Elly Jacobs told Cleveland Kesher, “Everyone loves Chemda.” He added, “We’re passionate about 4 | Cleveland Kesher

education,” echoing the fifth Lubavitcher Rebbe’s philosophy on educating Jewish children. “We strive to maintain a heimish atmosphere of warmth, positivity and acceptance, as we try to build each child’s self-esteem and nurture each one to be self-motivated and happy in his or her early childhood experience,” Rabbi Elly Jacobs said. “Like a family, we keep in touch; families send their kids’ siblings here, and we try to keep the tuition reasonable.” Chemda Jacobs attributes the school’s popularity to Hashem and to their “warm, loving environment.” “A lot of the children spend more of their time here than at home,” she said. “We’re very mindful of that, and we are careful to hire the most warmhearted and caring staff to instill in the children a love for Torah and Yiddishkeit, and the parents love it. The 2-year-olds come home singing the davening and benching. Their minds are like sponges; learning about the parasha, Yom tov … everything is done through songs, games, arts and crafts … through fun.” Another factor is the baby class. She said there is no other program for babies under Jewish auspices in the area, and parents are frequently looking for such a program. “We originally opened the baby class for the teachers, but now it’s so in demand that it has the longest waiting list,” Rabbi Elly Jacobs said. “There are two baby sections: under 1 year has 12 spots and up to 18 months has nine spots. Plus, many people have moved and continue

He said that they also really love the school and its reputation, and often send siblings and even next generations back because the school is like a family and because their alumni are so successful when they go off to their next school. “Torah Nursery gives them a strong foundation,” he said. “We enable the children to make their own decisions, helping them gain independence and self-confidence.”

Rabbi Yaakov Jacobs, who has worked in education with all ages through high school, including with troubled youth, is enthusiastic about focusing his professional energies on the preschool stage. “The future of how the child is going to be is formed at this early stage,” he said. “The first five years of a child’s development are crucial to how they are going to turn out, and we help them develop the tools to form those essential social skills to become solid members of society and members of their community.”

Experts provide tips from food to venue and everything in-between LISA MATKOWSKY CLEVELAND KESHER

lanning an event can be stressful. There are many different aspects and details, and knowing how to navigate them can alleviate the pressure and help focus on the joy of the day. To make the simcha more pleasant for the hosts, they must be methodical and wellorganized in preparation. Whether for a wedding, bar or bas mitzvah, sheva brachos, vort, or bris, the first considerations are determining the date, venue and budget. It’s important to decide on this first as many sites are booked months beforehand. “For bnei mitzvah, dates can be booked up to two years in advance,” Rachel Epstein, executive director of Green Road Synagogue in Beachwood, told Cleveland Kesher. “Knowing how flexible you can be with your dates is helpful.” When looking for a venue, Epstein recommended having an approximate guest head count as early in the process as possible to ensure reserving adequate space. “People often underestimate, rent out one size space, end up needing more and then bleed out, adding to the stress and the cost,” she said. “Always overestimate. I also recommend looking through the space to see if they have

the equipment and outlets you will need. I try to be as proactive as possible so people avoid surcharges and enjoy their event to the fullest.” Before booking a venue, Epstein suggests asking about flexibility, deadlines for refunds, cancellations or changes, and security deposit terms. She also recommends asking if other events will be occurring on the date you choose as having one space dedicated to your event often provides the best experience. “It’s a good idea to have an experienced party planner,” Epstein said. “Coordinating all the details takes up a significant amount of time and it’s nice to have someone help that has a relationship with vendors and knows what questions to ask.” After selecting the venue, you need to decide on catering, keeping your budget in mind. Ask friends, colleagues and acquaintances about the companies they used for similar events, and think about the menu you and your guests would enjoy. First, check date availability, then questions to ask should include menu options and choices available. Seth Bromberg, owner of Kantina Katering in Cleveland, recommended discussing the

He also suggested making sure to have an open dialogue about budget and service expectations. “Sometimes the menu is the simple part,” Bromberg told Cleveland Kesher. “You need to be on the same page about logistics and salient details, such as whether it will be a buffet, family-style, or plated; if it’s buffet style and there are 400 people, you don’t want guests waiting in line like an airport. The caterer needs to know how to make you understand how your vision can be best executed. Also, discuss food sensitivities and allergies, and staffing. Then ask for detailed proposals with exactly what the cost covers. With date, venue and food considered, you now can concentrate on the other details that make a party a party. Considering entertainment, many think about music, such as a DJ. In considering

how to choose one, AY Nakidem of AY Nakidem Productions has many recommendations for what to ask and what to look for. Sometimes an experienced vendor who has done your type of event, especially in your venue before, can let you know about any details you did not think of, and can almost take the place of a party planner. “A client made a bris and thought, what’s the big deal, but forgot a lot of little things,” Nakidem told Cleveland Kesher. “That’s why people hire a party planner. They know things you won’t, things that an experienced vendor like myself might know as well, such as which venue to use if you need an elevator, or what size kitchen is required, or if there’s only one entrance, crucial logistical details like that.” Nakidem also said it’s important to ask around to find out how easy it is to communicate with the vendors before selecting them, which is another reason he also likes party planners.

Community News SIMCHA | 10 “They can help with whom to call for flowers, music, and decor,” Nakidem said. “For example, sometimes hosts might think they need up lights, but I suggest their money would be better spent on a second musician because, in my experience, that would make that event more fun for the boys at a bar mitzvah, which I specialize in. Or they might be insecure about having it in their house due to budgetary constraints, but I can reassure them that you often get the best participation in houses.” Overall, the best advice to reduce stress and maximize the pleasure of your celebration might lie in wisely choosing experienced support, whether by well-chosen vendors, practiced party planners, or even online software and shareware. There are programs that generate timelines, help you develop a budget, and keep track of vendors and costs so your event can be about the milestone, not the anxiety.

Community News OU’s Bane praises community during visit CLEVELAND KESHER

s he visited Jewish communities across the country, Orthodox Union President Mark (Moishe) Bane made a recent stop in Cleveland to learn about the community and bring ideas to and from other communities. He visited schools and synagogues, speaking at Green Road Synagogue and Young Israel of Greater Cleveland, both in Beachwood, to meet Bane with the Jewish community. Bane said he has previously been to Cleveland in 1974 while in camp and frequently in the 1980s as a restructuring lawyer when LTV, a steel and aerospace company, was headquartered here. While he said he has not been back much since then, he spoke about how impressive the

Jewish community in Cleveland is, especially with programs such as Bikur Cholim. “Cleveland has extensively, very impressively, a system to provide food for families who have family members in the hospital and are in severe situations,” Bane said. Dr. Louis Malcmacher, president of the board of Hebrew Academy of Cleveland in Cleveland Heights, told Cleveland Kesher, “He was very impressed with the Cleveland Jewish community because we are a very well-organized and well-developed city when it comes to the Jewish community. A Dose of Inspiration A tale of two journeys By: Rabbi Avery Joel

e are nearing the end of our reading of Sefer Shemos, where the focus has been on our leaving Mitzrayim and becoming a liberated nation of our own. Interestingly, much of what we find in this sefer comes up again in Sefer B’midbar. Both of them: • Are about journeys • Show that Bnei Yisrael are at times ungrateful • Have Bnei Yisrael complaining specifically about food and water • Tell of major sins – Cheit Ha’egel in Shemos, and the Meraglim in B’midbar Hashem leans toward wiping out Bnei Yisrael and starting again with Moshe, until Moshe intervenes.

In many ways, it feels like the same thing all over again. Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks explains that even with all of the similarities, there is a critical difference between the sefarim. Shemos is about a journey from; B’midbar is about a journey to. Shemos tells of an enslaved nation escaping from their masters. B’midbar tells of a Bnei Yisrael who already left Mitzrayim in their rear view mirror and have been in the Midbar for a long time. They already received the Torah and are ready to move on; they are looking forward, not back. Based on this, you would expect Sefer B’midbar to be more optimistic, positive, and

A Dose of Inspiration TORAH | 18 hopeful – it should be all about the promise that lies ahead of this nation. And yet, the mood seems darker. The rebellions are more serious, and Moshe grows more angry with Bnei Yisrael. Why is that the case? The Torah is teaching us an important lesson here. The journey from is always easier than the journey to. For nations, it is one thing to overthrow a tyrant. But to then build a society based on law, freedom, and human rights – that is much harder to do. It is true of individuals, too – and there is a reason for it. When we are facing danger, when we have to flee from something, we dig down deep and find strength we didn’t know we possessed. Our adrenaline kicks in, and we find a way to do it. But fleeing to is different. It requires building something that doesn’t exist yet. As Rabbi

Sacks states, “Fleeing to is a journey into the unknown.” To successfully do that requires accepting new responsibilities, learning new skills and a lot of willpower. That’s what the Torah is trying to teach us. Life is a journey, but it isn’t enough for it to be a journey from. It must be a journey to, and our challenge is to identify where we are trying to go, and to persevere through the challenges we encounter. As we celebrate Pesach in a few weeks, let us remember that we aren’t just celebrating our journey out of Mitzrayim. We are celebrating our journey towards our destiny at Har Sinai and our entry into Eretz Yisrael.

Time for School CHAVIVA HIGH SCHOOL O

ne of the highlights during a Chaviva student’s four years of high school is our leadership elective that is offered every other year. During the first semester of this school year, ninth- and 10th-grade students delved into a variety of topics related to the concept of leadership, including learning Torah sources about leadership, comparing and contrasting the leadership of Avraham and Noach, and Moshe versus Paroh. Students watched videos about qualities necessary for effective leadership by Simon Sinek and Brene Brown and discussed the important role of the follower as well. The class spent time building skills such as budgeting, marketing, spreadsheet formatting, graphic design, and market research. The final assignment of the course is a “Shark Tank”-style presentation to the Chaviva executive board. The project required students to collaborate in groups and craft a creative plan for a fundraiser that would benefit their school. Five groups created their pitches with effective slide shows

and researched data. After the presentation, board members asked follow-up questions that clarified details about their budget and challenged them to problem-solve possible hurdles. The board was amazed at how professional and prepared the students were and had a hard time determining a winner. Congratulations to Batya Newman, Kayla Goldish, and Bina Reyz, who walked away the winners with their tuition raffle pitch. The students gained important perspective and life skills while having a great time using their creativity and honing their public speaking skills and growing their confidence as leaders.
