Northeast Ohio fosters entrepreneurship Y ou’ve likely heard of Israel referred to as a “startup nation” – and with good reason. Israel earned its moniker thanks in large part to the fact it creates about 1,400 startups each year, a level of innovation that’s resulted in some of the world’s largest tech companies – Apple, Google, Intel – taking notice and setting up shop in the country, according to a recent report by The Times of Israel. Further, Israel has developed a supportive entrepreneurial ecosystem – an effective combination of strong research and development, an educated and skilled workforce, and institutional and government support – that’s considered by many to be a global model. By comparison, entrepreneurial success has been more modest in Northeast Ohio, but there are plenty of reasons for optimism. For example, last year, Robert Half Technology, a job-fulfillment firm for technology companies and professionals, ranked Cleveland as the eighth best city in the U.S. for startup growth. And in 2017, the Kauffman Index of Growth Entrepreneurship, a study that measures startup growth at the city, state and national level, ranked Cleveland 18th in the country in terms of startup growth. More tangible than rankings are individuals and organizations that tirelessly work toward building our region into an innovation powerhouse. Leading the way in those efforts has been LaunchHouse, our partner, once again for the eighth annual Bootstrap Bash. With founder and CEO Todd Goldstein at the helm, LaunchHouse has been a visionary entrepreneurial leader in Northeast Ohio for more than a decade, during which time it’s created a nationally recognized technology accelerator program, launched a first-of-its-kind accelerator

program for high school students, and partnered with the likes of NASA and OneCommunity to strengthen the region’s resources. Another leader in Northeast Ohio’s entrepreneurial efforts has been Joe Kanfer, chair and venturer of Akron-based GOJO Industries, a world leader in the field of hygiene and skin care products. GOJO created PURELL Instant Hand Sanitizer, which is just one of the many reasons Kanfer is being honored tonight with LaunchHouse’s Visionary Entrepreneur Award. At the Cleveland Jewish News, we proudly chronicle the Jewish community’s entrepreneurial innovations and business successes, both in Israel and here at home in Northeast Ohio. From Todd and LaunchHouse to Joe and GOJO – and the countless other projects, programs and people making significant contributions in between – our coverage of the Jewish community’s innovative endeavors can be found in our weekly newspaper, on our website, cjn.org, or on any of our social media platforms. In part, that coverage helped lead the Press Club of Cleveland to name the CJN the best non-daily newspaper in Ohio in 2018. I encourage you to follow along with the CJN and share with friends and family the noteworthy news about Northeast Ohio’s ingenuity and creativity, and I invite you to enjoy the 2019 Bootstrap Bash, an event we at the CJN are proud to sponsor.

Kol Israel to acquire Shaarey Tikvah’s Face to Face program JANE KAUFMAN | STAFF REPORTER @jkaufmancjn jkaufman@cjn.org |
A
s Louise Freilich plans to retire as director of Face to Face on June 30, 2019, Kol Israel Foundation is preparing to acquire Congregation Shaarey Tikvah’s Holocaust education program. Leaders of both Shaarey Tikvah and Kol Israel said the Jan. 1, 2019 acquisition will lead to more robust funding, marketing and programming
for Face to Face, as well as streamlining two Holocaust education programs in Northeast Ohio. Rabbi Gary Robuck, former spiritual leader at Shaarey Tikvah, started Face to Face in 1994 after being influenced by the work of renowned Holocaust educator Leatrice Rabinsky at Cleveland Heights High School. He had been her student. Robuck designed a unique model for Holocaust education in a three-hour field trip that offered an introduction
to Judaism through a tour of the Beachwood synagogue with a rabbi or Jewish educator, then a slide presentation and guided tour of Shaarey Tikvah’s Holocaust exhibit, and finally a talk with a Holocaust survivor. Kol Israel was started in 1959 by Holocaust survivors. Since 2015, it’s had a traveling 45-minute Holocaust education program called Sharing Our Stories, which pairs video testimony of a survivor with a talk by a second- or third-generation Holocaust survivor.
That program will continue in tandem with Face to Face under the new educational director. “It’s going to allow the program to go to the next level,” said Jeff Epstein, president of Shaarey Tikvah, who praised Freilich for growing the program and positioning it “to have even more of an impact on the community.” Muriel Weber, president of

his past year, LaunchHouse celebrated its 10th anniversary. What started out as the brainstorm of two 20-somethings above Geraci’s Pizza has turned into a thriving coworking community spanning three locations with more than 180 members. Our success year in and year out would not be possible without support from people like you who believe in our mission of creating successful entrepreneurs. By the numbers, and with your support, LaunchHouse has achieved the following in its 10 years: • Assisted more than 10,500 entrepreneurs through its programs and events • Provided 4,000 hours of entrepreneurial support • Held more than 595 free community events • Provided co-working space for more than 225 companies • Educated and mentored Hiram College students as well as local area high school students with senior projects • Served as a resource to more than 25 area high schools and colleges • Invested in 65 companies that have raised more than $32 million in follow-on funding • Created more than 65 jobs through portfolio and member companies Part of what makes the LaunchHouse community so vibrant has been the contributions made by the people who shared their time and expertise with us through Lunch and Learns, One Million Cups of Coffee, Happy Hours and the How-to Series. To all of our speakers who volunteered their time, thank you. Tonight’s Bash would not have been possible without the help provided by Kevin S. Adelstein

and his team at the Cleveland Jewish News. You have been terrific partners with us in hosting the Bash. Of course, I cannot forget John Gadd who opened up Red Space for us tonight. You’ve been a great friend to LaunchHouse over the years. Thank you to our two newest location operators – Michaeal DeAloia and his team at Front Porch Media and Janet Haar and her team at the Oberlin Business Partnership and CoWork Oberlin. You and your teams took a chance on LaunchHouse and believed in our mission enough to open your own co-working communities. We have big plans for both locations in 2019 and we are excited that you will be a part of our team. But many are asking, what’s next for 2019? LaunchHouse is going to expand its coworking community throughout Northeast Ohio and beyond. We are on track to open six new locations in 2019 and another six in 2020. What this means is that our reach and impact on entrepreneurs everywhere will be larger than it ever has been before. I know I can do all of this because of the great team I have working with me each and every day. If you are interested in opening your own LaunchHouse, let’s talk. Thank you for your support, and for being here to celebrate with us tonight. Cheers to a wonderful 2019 and 10 years of LaunchHouse! Sincerely,

oe Kanfer is Chair and Venturer of Akronbased GOJO, the inventor of PURELL® Hand Sanitizer, and the leading global producer and marketer of skin health and hygiene solutions. In 1946, Joe’s aunt and uncle, Goldie and Jerry Lippman (of blessed memory), co-founded GOJO Industries. At seven years old, Joe became involved in the family business, where his first job was sitting on boxes of GOJO Hand Cleaner to hold them closed while the glue dried. After high school, Joe received a B.S. degree in Economics from the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania and a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School. Throughout his law school years, he divided his time, spending half of every week at school and commuting to Akron the other half to serve as President of GOJO. Under Joe’s leadership, GOJO entered the commercial soap business and established itself as the world’s leading provider of SANITARY SEALED™ soap systems in away-from-home settings like hospitals, foodservice establishments, offices and other public settings. Numerous innovations followed, including the 1988 invention of PURELL® Hand Sanitizer, revolutionizing public health by making hand hygiene available anywhere. With an inspiring vision of the significant role PURELL® Hand Sanitizer could have in saving lives, Joe persistently drove for acceptance of this new hand hygiene solution. Under Joe’s leadership, product trials and scientific outcome studies proved that PURELL® Hand Sanitizer effectively improved hand hygiene behaviors, thereby reducing hospital-associated infections and workplace absenteeism. PURELL® Hand Sanitizer was launched as a consumer product in 1997, soon becoming a household name. Today, institutions worldwide – from airports to schools to hospitals to restaurants – trust the PURELL® brand and offer PURELL® products to their patients, patrons and employees. The PURELL® brand is an iconic brand that has extended into hand sanitizing wipes, handwashes and surface spray. In 2018, GOJO announced that Marcella Kanfer Rolnick, Joe’s daughter, is carrying on the legacy of family leadership as Executive Chair of GOJO. Joe, in his current role as Chair and Venturer, mentors, coaches, and contributes to GOJO strategy in
partnership with Marcella, and other GOJO leaders. Outside of GOJO, Joe is a venture investor in the United States and Israel, serving as Chairman of Startvest Partners, which develops biotech startups in Israel. An active leader in national Jewish affairs, Joe is the past Chair of JFNA/ The Jewish Federations of North America, the coordinating organization of the North American Jewish community which includes the 155 Jewish communities of North America. He served on the board of the Jewish Agency for Israel and is past Chair of JESNA/the Jewish Education Service of North America, the Akron Jewish Federation, and The Lippman School. He is also a Founding Chair of Lippman Kanfer Family Philanthropies. He currently serves as Chair of Honeymoon Israel, a new venture to bring young couples to Israel and foster Jewish community when they return, and a board member of Leading Edge, dedicated to building talent pipelines for leadership in Jewish organizations. Joe’s leadership in the Akron community has broad reach. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Greater Akron Chamber Board of Directors. He is the past Chair of Akron Tomorrow and past Vice Chair of The University of Akron Board of Trustees. His honors include the 2011 H. Peter Burg Award from the Greater Akron Chamber and the 2015 Bert A. Polsky Humanitarian Award from the Akron Community Foundation. Joe is married with four children and 14 grandchildren.

Who are our entrepreneurs?
aunchHouse has been home to entrepreneurs in Cleveland since 2008. Back then, there were very few resources and organizations that supported idea-stage entrepreneurs. Today, we are thrilled there are dozens of local organizations eager to mentor, fund, educate and support startups of all stages. If there is one thing we have learned over the past 10 years, it’s that it takes a community to help an entrepreneur succeed. Thank you for showing your support for Cleveland’s startup community. We invite you to meet each of our showcase companies this evening. Looking to get more involved with LaunchHouse and our entrepreneurs? Please contact us at info@launchhouse.com to learn more.
2019 BOOTSTRAP BASH EXHIBITORS FOUNT Husband-and-wife duo Jackie and Phillip Wachter started FOUNT after deciding to create handmade leather gifts for each other. They realized there was a lack of high-quality American leather goods on the market and began FOUNT in their Cleveland Heights apartment, which they quickly outgrew, ending up in a studio space in downtown Cleveland. Their team has grown in the past four years to nearly 50 local employees and FOUNT now caters to a national audience, as well as their brick-and-mortar store clients located in Gordon Square Cleveland and Short North Columbus.

Entrepreneurs HYR MEDICAL A “perfect storm” has hit health care human resourcing! By 2025, the United States will have a shortage of more than 100,000 physicians and 1 million nurses. Freelance practitioners are used to relieve these shortages ($15 billion industry; projected to double in five years), but the current supply chain for connecting health care practitioners and providers is labor intensive, document-driven and painfully slow. As a result, practitioner burnout and associated medical errors are on the rise, which increases system costs and decreases the quality of care. Hyr Medical solves this important problem. Our dynamic team has built a transparent, webbased marketplace with no “middle man!” Direct communication occurs between practitioners and hospitals with no rate haggling. Our NCQAcertified credentialing process is automated (Rocket Credentialing™) and therefore faster than current, low-tech staffing agency methods. Up to 30 percent higher rates for practitioners, speed, transparency, ease of use, fewer shortages and improved patient care. We are taking healthcare staffing to a Hyr level! Hyr Medical is proud to be a Northeast Ohiobased BioEnterprise and LaunchHouse portfolio company.

J BANDZ HEADBANDS/TEEN ENTERPRISE LLC I am Josette “Lovie” Stewart, the 17-yearold owner of JBandz Headbands. My mom and I absolutely love to wear headbands, but we were bored with the common elastic, solid-color headbands. Josette Stewart My mom kept hunting through stores unable to find ones we wanted until one day she said, “You should just make your own.” I wanted something that was stylish and I wanted cloth ... so I began making my own. It started with me making them by hand, my family wearing them and posting on social media. Then I decided to start selling them. After a few weeks of sales over my summer break; I was able to purchase my very own sewing machine, which moved production from a 20-minute hand process to a 5-minute production process. I now seek various fabric types to create fashionable headbands that can be worn at the gym, to school or a weekend out with friends. I chose to donate a portion of the proceeds to the “Alive on Purpose” suicide prevention organization and hope to inspire other teens to follow their dreams.
Tory Coats is the Founder and Director of Teen Enterprise, a youth organization whose Tory Coats purpose is to empower youth through providing experiential learning opportunities and resources for teens to develop entrepreneurial skills. Teen Enterprise provides a platform for young entrepreneurs to “learn business by doing business” through its Dare 2 Believe Young Entrepreneur Pop Up Shop events. This initiative is designed to renovate vacant store front properties in the city of Cleveland and host marketplace events for teen entrepreneurs. Tory and this project won the Grand Prize during Cleveland Leadership Center Accelerate 2018.

Entrepreneurs LANDI INDUSTRIES Landi Industries is an endto-end rapid prototyping company. To put it briefly, the “one stop shop for engineering.” Our goal is to eliminate the engineering practices of yesteryear, where an inventor would work with multiple companies all doing different parts of a complex project. We saw (first hand) how this leads Jeremiah Landi to bloated budgets and subpar end results for projects. We created a company of sharp, diversified individuals who can do every part of a project (i.e. design, PCB, FEA,
firmware, apps, certification, production) while working in an agile method to prevent projects from derailing during the process. We demonstrated this by the business’ success over the past two-and-a-half years from building projects from high density servers to bear-stuffing machines. We plan to keep on demonstrating how an agile hardware company works and plan to keep bringing great products to market. As we tell everyone, bring us an idea and we will make it a reality. Entrepreneurs YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR INSTITUTE At Young Entrepreneur Institute (YEI), we believe every child should understand and experience entrepreneurship. We believe that entrepreneurship education and experience can make subjects such as math and writing more relevant to students. We also believe that the intangibles learned through entrepreneurship - perseverance, hard work, managing adversity, overcoming failure, problem solving - directly mirror characteristics necessary for success in life, regardless of whether one is an entrepreneur. YEI was founded in 2006 by its current director, Greg Malkin. YEI has grown to impact thousands of students and educators across our region. For example, more than 500 public and private school educators attended our recent Enspire 2018 conference; more than 3,000 students participate in our Lemonade Day program; and more than 750 students participated in our Selling Bee video pitch competition. Altogether, our programs touch the lives of tens of thousands of kids at hundreds of schools and organizations.
