he City of Solon, a suburb of Cleveland that was established in 1917 as a village and became a city in 1961, has many programs, opportunities, resources and channels that make it easy for residents to become involved with the city. Solon Mayor Susan Drucker and Drucker Solon City Schools superintendent Joseph Regano said the city prides itself on its ability to provide citizens the city services, events and community programs they desire while also offering a level of accessibility Regano and transparency that keeps residents well informed and involved.

“There are several ways (Solon) makes (itself) available to its citizens,” Drucker said. “We have televised city council and committee meetings. We also have, through our website, the opportunity to live stream our meetings as well.” Regano agreed Solon makes itself accessible to citizens – and that it does so efficiently. “I think the community interacts with its people along the common needs,” he said. “Those are safety and protection, city services and schools. Every community tries to maximize their work in those areas. I think in Solon, people have those great city services, great protection and even greater education opportunities available for students.” Drucker, who isn’t seeking re-election when her term ends later this year, said she’s directly involved in promoting what the city has to offer via various community events it hosts. “I have an event called Tea with the Mayor where I meet with Solon seniors to answer their questions and hear their

concerns,” she said. “I also do business visits with various businesses around the city. We share a strong relationship with the Solon Chamber (of Commerce) and I also attend all of the events I am invited to.” In addition to Tea with the Mayor, Solon offers Solon Home Days, Solon Earth Day and the Citizens Police Academy, a nine-week program designed to give citizens a working knowledge of the Solon Police Department. “We also have ‘notify me’ options on the website, so if people need to contact the city directly, they can send direct communication through our website as well,” Drucker said. “We try to make ourselves as available as possible.” CITY SCHOOLS A TOP ATTRACTION Solon City Schools, a district consisting of seven schools, has long been recognized as one of Northeast Ohio’s – and Ohio’s – strongest districts. Drucker said the success of the city’s schools would be considered as the “No. 1 reason people move to Solon.” “The success of the schools are connected to the success of Solon,” she said. “The city administration shares an

incredible relationship with the school board, which also aids (Solon’s) success. People are proud of the schools and the city’s positive exposure.” Regano agreed Solon’s schools are top of the line and a major reason people move to Solon. Because of that quality, he said the schools set a standard for themselves and are obliged to uphold it. “The more that people are interested in the success of the schools and education, the more it primes the pump for more people to come here,” he said. Key to the districts’ success, Regano said, is that everyone in the Solon community is working toward the same goals – to give families the best schooling possible. “The real secret is the gift of being a homogenous community,” he said. “Everyone here wants the same things. Whether you’re in school, out of school, a factory worker or a city professional, they all want great schools and we give that to them.” Looking to the future, Regano said he is hopeful because Solon has always adapted to the changing needs of residents and students.

“I think we retain citizens (in Solon) because of the schools and that people rarely move away because of a bad experience,” he said. “The one thing that is constant is change. People, students and expectations change. And as long as we stand willing to change along with that, we will be OK.”

Through the Solon Arts Center, the city also offers dancing programs, camps and special event days, music lessons and adult craft classes. Drucker said the arts center will be holding a November Veterans Day Art Exhibit, which is new for 2017. The exhibit will include art by veterans or art depicting veterans. Not only does the city have an active arts center, it also has the Solon Senior Center and the Solon Community Center, which focus on getting citizens involved in various aspects of the city. In conjunction with the Solon Community Center, the city also offers a “blue ribbon program,” which provides programming for citizens with developmental disabilities. “It’s an outstanding community center and it’s a huge draw to our city,” Drucker said. “We also have membership opportunities for people who work but don’t necessarily live in Solon as well.” One of the most loved aspects of the city, Drucker said, is its parks system. The city has several different outdoor areas in its park system – the Solon Community Park, Timberlake Park, Little Fields Playground, Portz Parkway Trail and the Grantwood Golf Course. Little Field Playground is also ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) accessible. With all of these offerings – city services, schools, arts and parks – Drucker said Solon’s future is bright. But it isn’t just because of those amenities, it’s because residents and city employees take pride in the community. “People want to live in a place where they can play, work and raise a family,” she said. “People are proud of the accomplishments and want to be part of that. I would say Solon is a community that offers a unique mix of attributes, all of which make it ideal for citizens. There is financial stability and a great mix of residential and business opportunities as well.”

Nobody Does it Better.

City connects to Jewish roots The Jewish Federation of Cleveland’s 2011 Greater Cleveland Jewish Population Study reported that 80,800 Jewish citizens live in the Greater Cleveland area, to which Solon belongs. Drucker said Solon takes great pride in its diversity and especially in its Jewish presence. Solon is home to a number of Jewish-led organizations and businesses, including Solon Orthodontics, Camp Gan Izzy Solon, Solon Jewish Preschool, Forrest City Hebrew Benevolent Association, Mount Olive Cemetery Association, Action Travel Center and the Solon Chabad. “The Solon Chabad has made incredible improvements to the area as a religious hub,” she said. “They’ve embraced the community and the community has embraced them right back. It’s great to see them thriving. Every year when we light the menorah, the community is out in full force – even non-Jewish community members.” Solon embraces arts, recreation To say Solon cares deeply about the arts would be an understatement, Drucker said. “(The Solon Arts Center) plays a huge role in the community,” she said. “We have programs like the Youth Theatre Production, which includes theater and dance. We also now have the Solon Community Band, which is a volunteer group that isn’t directly through Solon but we work with them to provide performance venues. ... They always put on fantastic performances.”

and restaurant options within the community. Another thing I like about Solon is the U.S. Route 422 extension that gets you downtown quickly (and that allows) access to rural Geauga. It’s a great mix in what the area offers to its residents.” Simon suggests Solon has already experienced its building boom, citing developments like Thornbury and Signature of Solon, but adds a renaissance could occur if space is available. “At some point, you’ll see people tearing homes down and rebuilding, but there are still scattered lots available within Solon for those new developments,” he said. “You’re going to see decently priced homes and many families will do add-value renovations to fix and add worth to the homes. Maybe you’ll see people rehabbing homes in the future.” Simon said Simcon Homes has been building homes in Solon since 1999. “I saw potential here – that people wanted to live here,” he said. “As areas like Beachwood and Pepper Pike were filling up, they were moving

east and saw there were spaces to develop (in Solon). Solon was the next logical step.” Benjamin agreed Solon’s biggest selling point is its strong school system, noting the class sizes are small – in part because of few new developments popping up in the city. “Solon is sort of on the reverse right now because though people are living in Solon, they are staying in their homes because there is nowhere to really move to in Solon,” he said. “What happens is, people are staying in their existing homes but there is not a lot of new people coming into the community now. There are opportunities for resales but you have to mix in new developments as well.” Benjamin said there could be opportunities for home developers in Solon – especially for those targeting the market for “empty nesters,” or people who are looking to downsize their living space because their children have gone through school. “There are not a lot of opportunities (right now) for people to have that empty nester onefloor style of living,” he said, suggesting that could change. “That’s the biggest thing on the

Simon residential side. These homes would be smaller, cluster homes that are maintenance free. If that product can be developed in Solon, I think that’s a great opportunity.” For commercial developers, Benjamin recognized businesses would need places to build. Though there has been a resurgence of restaurants, he said the city would have to work with current landowners regarding how they could help them develop. “That way, Solon could become a nice area for people to stop, shop and dine,” he said. “There are definitely opportunities if they can put a plan in place and execute it.”

T

he Chabad Jewish Center of Solon, more commonly known as the Solon Chabad, has been a staple for the Jewish community in Solon for more than 25 years. As other Jewish entities in the area have come and gone, Rabbi Zushe Greenberg said the Solon Chabad has stood the test of time because of the relationships cultivated there. “I believe that the No. 1 attraction of Solon Chabad is the personal relationships that all of the families have with (my wife) Miriam and myself,” he said. “They know that there is someone that is there for their family, who really cares for their children and is reachable at all times. Solon Chabad is kind of a mom-and-pop shop where every customer feels at home.” Greenberg said the approach of sharing Jewish experiences regardless of background or affiliation creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere at the Solon Chabad, which allows them to serve better. “The secret to the Solon Chabad is that this is a place where being Jewish is a lot of fun,” he said. “We were lucky to attract young families that were excited about creating a community where long-lasting friendships were formed and their children could be raised in a fun and vibrant Jewish environment.” Solon Chabad offers many programs, which Greenberg said are for every age and milestone. The programs include preschool, Hebrew school, summer camps, after-school programs, family services and holiday celebrations. Greenberg said Solon Chabad has played a vital role in the city. As Northeast Ohio’s Jewish population moved to Solon over the years, Solon Chabad provided community where some felt a Jewish presence was lacking. “Solon Chabad filled this void by providing a Jewish anchor and fulfilling the Jewish needs for the residents,” he said. “Since we have been here for so many years, we formed many strong bonds and long-lasting relationships. The community knows that they can count on Solon Chabad for many years to come.” Looking ahead, Solon Chabad leaders are looking south. Since many families that move to Solon come from Twinsburg, Greenberg said, Solon Chabad has plans to create a Chabad there. “The Jewish population is growing steadily yet there is no Jewish presence there,” he said. “In time for the upcoming High Holidays, our son Rabbi Mendy and his wife Mussie Greenberg will be launching the start of the Twinsburg Chabad together with their newborn daughter, Rochel, as a new beginning.” JILL AND CORY KWAIT RE/MAX TRADITIONS 216-313-1688 • 216-598-8693 thekwaitteam@aol.com

reeway Lanes recently rebranded itself as Rollhouse Entertainment, a name intended to better represent the multiple entertainment options and full range of services available at each of its Northeast Ohio locations. Rollhouse Entertainment’s Solon location, 33185 Bainbridge Road, will still offer 26 lanes of bowling but will expand its gaming room and add a lounge. The location will also install a laser tag course, an American Ninja Warrior course and party rooms. Owner Glenn Gable said customers of the Solon location and community members could expect to see new signage in about two weeks. “We took our time and tried to come

up with a name that made sense with what we were doing,” he said of the rebranding. “Every location will be named Rollhouse Entertainment, so we will have an overall brand. We wanted a name that encompassed who we are. We come from bowling and we’re going to stay in bowling.” Customers should expect the same level of customer service Freeway Lanes has always supplied, said Gable, adding other Freeway Lanes locations already using the more inclusive Rollhouse Entertainment name are in Parma and Mentor. “We’re just working to diversify our entertainment by giving our customers more options other than bowling,” he said. “It’s working toward a whole experience.”
