Celebrating Jewish Columbus amid challenging times

As our hearts are heavy with concern for those in Israel enduring the devastating effects of the ongoing war – and as concerns about antisemitism continue to grow near and far – it’s more important than ever for our community to be unified.

The war in Israel has undoubtedly cast a shadow over us, reminding us of the fragility of peace and the importance of standing together despite our differences. In times like these, it becomes even more crucial for us to support one another and those affected by the tragic war in our Holy and.

And although we face such challenges, I continue to be inspired by the Columbus Jewish community. Here, we are proud to be part of a generous community where those from diverse Jewish traditions, generations, hometowns and ethnic backgrounds consistently help ensure everyone is taken care of especially during hard times.

This connection is evidenced on the cover of SOURCE 2024, which shows students at The Ohio State University (my alma mater showing their support for Israel at an Oct. , 0 rally at the Oval on campus. Since the war began, many Jewish students on campuses across the country have felt unsafe and faced an increase in antisemitism, which the Columbus Jewish News explored via interviews with students at colleges around the country for a January 2024 front-page story. To read about those students’ experiences, visit columbusjewishnews.com/antisemitism.

On a happier note, were thrilled to celebrate this past year’s class of Columbus Jewish News ifference akers a group of ama ing individuals making a significant impact and shining a bright light on Central Ohio and beyond. We also honored the awe-inspiring leadership and tikkun olam repairing the world performed by Jay and Jeanie Schottenstein, the 0 ifetime Achievement Award recipients. The Schottensteins embody the spirit of benevolence, exemplifying that one’s success should be measured by the positive impact one leaves on the world. And at the core of their extraordinary journey lies their

steadfast devotion to family and education. ou can read about all the ifference akers at columbusjewishnews.com/ dm.

How does SO CE fit into all this Our annual maga ine shares resources and information about local institutions doing their part to make a difference, engage the community in new ways, and offer convenient services with respect to Jewish traditions and values. These institutions are the pillars of our energetic and compassionate community. ook to SO CE as a directory for when you need something, or want to give back, but aren’t sure where. art of the reason we publish SOURCE is to help do our part to share the strong network of support and resources we have in Jewish Columbus. I encourage you to continue to support these local mainstays, with which the Columbus Jewish ublication Company is grateful to partner.

I also thank you for your incredible support of all the CJ C does. On behalf of our professional staff and our board of directors, thank you for continuing to be an integral part of the caring community we’ve cultivated together since we began publishing the CJN on Aug. , 0 .

And, if you’re not already receiving the CJN in your mailbox on a biweekly basis, I encourage you to subscribe today – it’s free of charge for households in the communitywide home delivery area. Visit columbusjewishnews.com/ subscribe to receive your free subscription.

It is during these moments of adversity that we must lean on the values that define us as a Jewish people. Compassion, understanding and empathy should guide our actions, shape our responses and help us contribute to a more peaceful and just world. ay we all go from strength to strength.

JEWISH HOLIDAYS and noteworthy dates

PURIM

Saturday, March 23 (begins at sunset)

Sunday, March 24 (ends at nightfall)

The jolly festival of Purim is celebrated every year on the 14th of the Hebrew month of Adar (late winter/early spring). It commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia from Haman’s plot “to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day,” as recorded in the Megillah (book of Esther).

PASSOVER

Monday, April 22 (begins at sunset)

Tuesday, April 30 (ends at nightfall)

The eight-day festival of Passover is celebrated in the early spring, from the 15th through the 22nd of the Hebrew month of Nissan. It commemorates the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. By following the rituals of Passover, we have the ability to relive and experience the true freedom that our ancestors gained.

YOM HASHOAH

Sunday, May 5 (begins at sunset)

Monday, May 6 (ends at nightfall)

Holocaust Remembrance Day

YOM HAZIKARON

Sunday, May 12 (begins at sunset)

Monday, May 13 (ends at nightfall)

Israel Memorial Day

YOM HA’ATZMAUT

Monday, May 13 (begins at sunset)

Tuesday, May 14 (ends at nightfall)

Israel Independence Day

SHAVUOT

Tuesday, June 11 (begins at sunset)

Thursday, June 13 (ends at nightfall)

Shavuot coincides with the date that God gave the Torah to the Jewish people at Mount Sinai more than 3,300 years ago. It comes after 49 days of eager counting, as we prepared ourselves for this special day. It is celebrated by lighting candles, staying up all night to learn Torah, hearing the reading of the Ten Commandments in synagogue, feasting on dairy foods and more.

TISHA B’AV

Monday, Aug. 12 (begins at sunset)

Tuesday, Aug. 13 (ends at nightfall)

The Three Weeks is an annual mourning period that falls in the summer during which we do not cut our hair, purchase new clothes, listen to music or hold weddings. It reaches its climax and concludes with the fast of the ninth of Av, the date when both Holy Temples were set aflame. This is the saddest day of the Jewish calendar, and it is also the date that many other tragedies befell our people. The fast of Tisha b’Av begins at sunset the previous evening. Besides fasting, we abstain from additional pleasures: washing, applying lotions or creams, wearing leather shoes and marital relations. Until midday, we sit on the floor or on low stools.

ROSH HASHANAH

Wednesday, Oct. 2 (begins at sunset)

Friday, Oct. 4 (ends at nightfall)

Rosh Hashanah is the birthday of the universe, the day G-d created Adam and Eve, and it’s celebrated as the head of the Jewish year. It’s celebrated with candlelighting in the evenings, festive meals with sweet delicacies during the night and day, prayer services that include the sounding of the ram’s horn (shofar) on both mornings and desisting from creative work.

YOM KIPPUR

Friday, Oct. 11 (begins at sunset)

Saturday, Oct. 12 (ends at nightfall)

Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year – the day on which we are closest to God and to the quintessence of our own souls. It is the Day of Atonement –“For on this day He will forgive you, to purify you, that you be cleansed from all your sins before God” (Leviticus 16:30). For nearly 26 hours – from several minutes before sunset on 9 Tishrei to after nightfall on 10 Tishrei – we “afflict our souls,” or abstain from food and drink, do not wash or anoint our bodies, do not wear leather footwear and abstain from marital relations.

SUKKOT

Wednesday, Oct. 16 (begins at sunset)

Wednesday, Oct. 23 (ends at nightfall)

For 40 years, as our ancestors traversed the Sinai Desert, following the Exodus from Egypt, miraculous “clouds of glory” surrounded and hovered over them, shielding them from the dangers and discomforts of the desert. Ever since, we remember God’s kindness and reaffirm our trust in His providence by dwelling in a sukkah – a hut of temporary construction with a roof covering of branches – for the duration of the Sukkot festival (on the Jewish calendar Tishrei 15-21). For seven days and nights, we eat all our meals in the sukkah and otherwise regard it as our home.

SHEMINI ATZERET / SIMCHAT TORAH

Wednesday, Oct. 23 (begins at sunset)

Friday, Oct. 25 (ends at nightfall)

The holiday of Sukkot is followed by an independent holiday called Shemini Atzeret. In Israel, this is aone-day holiday; in the Diaspora, it is a two-day holiday, and the second day is known as Simchat Torah. This holiday is characterized by utterly unbridled joy, which surpasses even the joy of Sukkot. The joy reaches its climax on Simchat Torah, when we celebrate the conclusion – and restart – of the annual Torah-reading cycle.

CHANUKAH

Wednesday, Dec. 25 (begins at sunset)

Thursday, Jan. 2, 2025 (ends at nightfall)

Chanukah is the Jewish eight-day, wintertime “festival of lights,” celebrated with a nightly menorah lighting, special prayers and fried foods. At the heart of the festival is the nightly menorah lighting. The menorah holds nine flames, one of which is the shamash (“attendant”), which is used to kindle the other eight lights. On the first night, we light just one flame. On the second night, an additional flame is lit. By the eighth night of Chanukah, all eight lights are kindled. Special blessings are recited, often to a traditional melody, before the menorah is lit, and traditional songs are sung afterward.
