few years ago, I covered the Grand Menorah Lighting in downtown Cleveland for the Cleveland Jewish

News. It was a cold December night – one of the coldest of the season to that point, as I recall – and I was both too lightly dressed for the occasion and running late from the CJN’s Beachwood office, which didn’t allow me time to pick up a heavier jacket from home. After a light jog from my parking spot to Public Square, I made it right before the ceremony was scheduled to begin – and warmed up in the process. The mayor, however, was running late, which left me and my fellow media members attempting to stay warm by commiserating over the cold. In so doing, I struck up a conversation with a reporter that by the end of the event led to the exchange of phone numbers and eventually to us meeting up for dinner and drinks. Things went well, and in a relatively short amount of time, she invited me to join her and her friends for New Year’s Eve.

Things were going well, right? Wrong. Days before the ball dropped, attempts to gain details about her plans for that evening went unanswered – until New Year’s Eve, that is, when she posted photos of her ringing in the new year with another guy across every social media platform on which we were connected. It felt like something straight out of a sitcom. The moral of my story? It’s twofold. For starters, you’re holding in your hands the inaugural Jstyle Singles Issue. In it, you’ll find profiles of 10 Jewish singles who were selected by Jstyle from more than a hundred community nominations. You’ll also find advice from dating columnist Elana Averbach and an article by Andria Kaplan summarizing the local singles scene – both of which I hope help Jstyle’s single readers avoid situations like my New Year’s Eve fiasco. Secondly, we’ve all been single at one point or another and can share horror stories about dating’s highs and lows that we look back on and laugh about. The takeaway if you’re looking for love, though, is to always be ready for when opportunity comes knocking. Sure, in my case, the opportunity that presented itself that night on Public Square ultimately flamed out in spectacular fashion, but hey, I learned from it and moved on. And this New Year’s Eve, I’m happy to report, I already have a date lined up.

There are few better ways to take in all University Circle has to offer than by attending Holiday CircleFest, where visitors can enjoy the neighborhood’s many museums, gardens and galleries free of charge and also enjoy live music, craft-making activities and historic displays. Outside on Wade Oval, visitors will find horse-drawn carriage rides, ice-carving demonstrations and ice-skating. And as always, Holiday CircleFest will be capped by the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Winter Lights Lantern Procession. universitycircle.org

CLE Rocks NYE Dec. 31 | Cleveland

Downtown Cleveland will feel a little like New York City’s Times Square again this year when CLE Rocks NYE returns for its second New Year’s Eve bash. Why stay at home to watch the ball drop when you can ring in the new year and revel in all Cleveland has to offer by heading downtown for the big celebration? Last year’s event featured live music, food trucks, a beer garden and fireworks, and this year’s party promises to be equally entertaining. clenye.com

CHANUKAH GRAND MENORAH LIGHTING Dec. 16 | Cleveland

Northeast Ohio is fortunate to be home to many public menorah lightings, but only one happens in the heart of the city and region: Chabad of Downtown Cleveland’s Chanukah Grand Menorah Lighting on Public Square. Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson and Cavaliers Head Coach David Blatt will be among those to visit the square’s southwest quadrant in front of Terminal Tower to take part in the ceremony, which each year features music, latkes, jelly doughnuts and warm drinks. downtownchabad.com

DOWNTOWN CLEVELAND RESTAURANT WEEK

It seems the colder it gets, the more people enjoy this annual arts and music festival. Dozens of local and regional bands take over Ohio City’s Market Square District, playing on the square itself as well as inside shops and bars up, down and around West 25th Street. Food trucks, outdoor games and warming stations are also a staple of this free event, which is entering its fifth year. britewinter.com

Thaw out from winter’s chill with some warm dishes during the 8th annual Downtown Cleveland Restaurant Week. About 50 restaurants are expected to participate, and from them diners can expect $15 lunch specials and $30 three-course dinner menus. It’s a great way to try new places in the city’s growing yet already robust culinary scene.

This one time at summer camp … There was this zip line where you take it out and then fall into a lake, but there was basically a 10-foot strip of land before you got to the lake. I was terrified of heights at the time, but I decide to do it. I push off, but the swing doesn’t. I can’t hold on to the rope because it’s wet, and I fall onto the land – I didn’t even make it to the water. What’s your favorite memory of Israel? Probably being in the Old City. Jack’s or Corky & Lenny’s? Jack’s What’s the best part about living in Jewish Cleveland? It’s honestly more about Cleveland in general. We’re very much a city on the rise, and thankfully through my job and community activities like those of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland’s Young Leadership Division, I get to be a part of that.

This one time at summer camp … I went to sports camp for baseball, not sleepaway camp. What’s your favorite memory of Israel? I got to go with my oldest friend and family in the summer of 2006. I didn’t bring a guitar on that trip, and a week into it my calluses started going away. So I went to an Arab market and had to bargain with the owner of a stand who was trying to sell me a toy guitar. He wanted 250 shekels but I got it for 60 after some friendly but serious negotiation. And I finally got to play guitar. Jack’s or Corky & Lenny’s? Jack’s What’s the best part about living in Jewish Cleveland? The Jewish community in Cleveland is really special. It’s very strong and connected. I’ve lived in New Orleans and San Francisco – big cities with Jewish populations – but it wasn’t the same. Cleveland is as close as you can get to Israel in America, next to maybe Brooklyn, N.Y. It’s remarkable.

What’s the best part about living in Jewish Cleveland? I moved away from Cleveland for a while, to Chicago and Washington, D.C. for work. I came back to Cleveland and it’s awesome. It’s not a transient place, and everyplace else I went felt transient. It’s an awesome and exciting place, and there are passionate, innovative people here. Right now, this is the best time to live in Cleveland, especially if you’re a person with a great idea.

Singled Out

When JDates and swiping left and right lead to dead ends, it’s time to put yourself out there By Andria Kaplan

I

t’s late Thursday night, it’s been one event after another for weeks, and it feels like the only thing changing is the temperature outside. It’s turning cold, which also seems to sum up your love life. It’s been another evening – or week – of feeble love interests, and you’re mentally preparing yourself to spend the holidays single, flipping latkes with mom and lighting candles with friends. So just how and where are you supposed to meet eligible Jewish Clevelanders? A synagogue? Swiping through a dating app? Online? A young professionals event? The bar? The answer, in a sense, is any of the above, so long as one overcomes an unwillingness to venture into new territory – which often works against one’s stated desire to find love. “Most often, people stay within their network of friends,” says Michelle Hirsch, co-founder of Jewish matchmaking service Cleveland Yentas. “But you need to make an effort to do something different and build your network. You never know who the people you meet will know.” When thinking about matchmaking Jewish

Clevelanders, some may not realize just how many eligible Jewish Clevelanders there are. There are 80,800 Jews in Greater Cleveland, according to the Jewish Federation of Cleveland’s 2011 Greater Cleveland Jewish Population Study. Nearly 16,000 of those Jews are under the age of 40, and 50 percent of them are single. That means roughly 8,000 Jews in Cleveland are up for grabs. That’s 7,999 people you potentially haven’t met yet. The first step to putting yourself out there, Hirsch says, is admitting you want to find someone. And as more people do, she suggests that the singles scene will improve, and in the long run, perhaps increase and strengthen Northeast Ohio’s Jewish community. “If you can change the image of the singles scene in Cleveland, people will want to end up back here,” Hirsch says. “The more it changes for the better, the more of an effort people will make to stay here.” js

Jstyle Fall 2014

Plenty of Opportunities Dear Elana, I’m a transplant from a larger city. The dating scene in Cleveland is smaller than I’m used to, and I’m not sure how to proceed. I was in a relationship for a while, but it didn’t work out, and now it seems like everyone I meet is connected to my exgirlfriend. My question: How do you date in a small Jewish community where everyone seems to know each other? – Not a Double Dipper Dear NADD, Dating in a smaller town can be fraught with peril. You’re hitting it off with a redhead at The Velvet Tango Room when your ex’s brother walks in – and winks at you – to let you know he sees you. There’s no escape. Once you accept this loss of anonymity, dating in a smaller community can also have advantages. It can feel friendly and familiar, and you can develop strong bonds that will last a lifetime. People know who you are, and they remember how you acted in your last relationship, which is great if you’re a mensch. Unless you want the whole shtetl to know that you snore in your sleep, try to keep things civil with your ex. If anyone asks about her, speak well of your time together. Hopefully, she will follow suit. Remember, your ex doesn’t own the whole singles scene. Just because a woman went to the same Hillel as your ex doesn’t mean she’s off limits. The scene can be lean. Here are some statistics to calculate your chances of meeting a match in the CLE. The Jewish Federation of Cleveland released data from its 2011 Greater Cleveland Jewish Population Study, indicating there are roughly 80,800 Jews in the Cleveland area. • 23 percent of the population is children, which leaves 62,216 Jewish adults. • 49 percent of the population is men, so that leaves 31,730 Jewish women. • 51percent of the women are married,

which leaves 15,548 unmarried women. The study doesn’t break down the numbers further, but we can imagine based on similar numbers from the general population that there are approximately 9,800 Jewish women in Cleveland who are romantically unattached and interested in dating men. If you want to date someone who is near your age, we can divide by three to represent three major age groups, which limit the pool to roughly 3,266. Once you factor in other preferences: height, weight, education, socio-economics, her hamantaschen baking skills, if she likes Adam Sandler, if she can tell a good summer camp story, you further refine your numbers. Let’s estimate you could be compatible with about 10 percent of the available women. That means that out of the entire pool of Jewish singles in Cleveland, there are around 325 women who could be a match, which may not sound like many, but as my grandma always said, “You only need one.” If you dare disagree with grandma, here are some ways to expand your social network: • Check out groups and events like the Young Leadership Division, JCLE, Moishe House, Meetup.com, Jewish book and film festivals, charity happy hours, matchmaking services and speed dating events. • To further expand your reach, you can tap into the national (or international) catalog of eligible Jewish singles through online dating sites and attend Jewish retreats or parties like The Ball hosted by Let My People Go. The catch is that if you fall in love, you have to be willing to move, or have some cache to get your dream girl to relocate to the 216. • According to the Pew Research Center’s 2013 survey, 58 percent of Jews married non-Jews from 2000 to 2013. If dating a nonJew is an option, looking outside the tribe is another way to increase your pool of single women. I’ll look forward to seeing you around town – because it’s unavoidable. Wink. Happy dating!

aterloo Road in Cleveland’s North Collinwood neighborhood conjures underground comics from the 1960s. The buildings, many of them brick, are sturdy and vintage. Some feature huge graffiti, befitting such an arts-rich area. Others trumpet their function, like the Beachland Ballroom & Tavern and nearby record stores Music Saves and Blue Arrow Records. This stretch of Cleveland smacks of the city’s ethnic, industrial past. But all dressed up with new sidewalks and landscaping, Story by Carlo Wolff with many storefronts just renovated or about to Photography by Michael C. Butz be, it embodies a retro-futuro ethos. You could make a great Western movie here, it’s so flat and two-dimensional, so deadpan cool.

At the east end of the Waterloo Arts & Entertainment District, “Wheels on Waterloo,” a piece by neighborhood artists Lou Ross and Jerry Schmidt, lets visitors know they’ve arrived.

Waterloo’s resurgence has been coming since the opening of the indie-friendly Beachland. It seems to have turned a corner with this year’s completion of an ambitious streetscape project between East 151st and East 161st streets that makes it feel like a neighborhood on the move. “I think Waterloo has been a hub for culture in this city since the Beachland opened,” says Troy Schwartz, owner of Star POP Vintage + Modern, a nostalgiafilled toy and collectibles store. “I think things are beginning to come together, and with the new streetscape finished and new business coming in, we’re beginning to fill in some of the holes.” Schwartz’s Star POP, the record stores and the aptly named boutique Native Cleveland are filled with appealing wares, which compliment no fewer than 10 galleries, studios and other arts-related spaces in what’s become known as the Waterloo Arts and Entertainment District. “This is an area that’s just beginning to evolve,” says Susan Ross, who with her husband Louis owns Waterloo Studios, recently outfitted with a snazzy glass storefront. Alan Glazen, a former advertising magnate, just opened Waterloo Brew, the first of four neighborhood bars he aims to launch. As founder of A-Z Taverns, Glazen already has opened

similar establishments elsewhere in Cleveland: University Circle’s Uptown, the Gordon Square Arts District in the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood, and on West 25th Street in Ohio City – districts symbolic of Cleveland’s current renaissance. Coming soon: new restaurants like Luchita’s Mexican Restaurant, already a well-known West Side eatery, and a fiber workshop and gallery run by Jessica Pinsky, a Cleveland Institute of Art technical specialist who creates “sewn paintings.” And to bring it all together, the community mounts Walk All Over Waterloo, a first-Friday-of-the-month event similar to the Tremont Art Walk. It’s a neighborhood with a promising mix of art, entertainment and food – a mix stakeholders hope make it Northeast Ohio’s latest destination neighborhood.

Grassroots efforts Susan Ross works as an art therapist; Louis Ross does graphic design and sculpture at Waterloo Studios, a gallery on the first floor of a brick building that has been in his wife’s family since the 1960s. They live in Cleveland Heights. In 2010, Sue decided it was time for Louis to move his art projects out of their Cleveland Heights basement into the former headquarters of her family’s firm. When he began to clean up the place,

neighbors started to drop by to help. Louis even let a homeless man live there in exchange for handiwork. “It was pretty edgy and gritty,” says Sue. “It’s an urban setting. You’ve got to be careful. People come in, neighbors come in, we’ve never had a real problem here. It’s a city street.” What does the neighborhood lack? “People,” Louis says, recalling when the area sported ethnic clubs and the gangster Danny Greene lived down the street. It’s coming back, however, largely thanks to an infusion of money for renovation, home purchase and home improvement programs and storefront upgrades. The Rosses took advantage of the city’s Storefront Renovation Program to secure a $40,000 grant, 40 percent of it rebated, for their new storefront. They had to put up the money and agree to keep the building in good condition for five years. The neighborhood requires commitment. “I’ve been in and out of here for a long time,” says Jerry Schmidt, a sculptor who rents his studio across the street from the Rosses’ gallery. “I’ve seen nothing but positive. I’ve seen how the

young have accepted the change and are understanding art. … I’ve taken a lot of these young kids off the streets and taught then how to weld.” Schmidt is a retired ironworker whose father was sculptor Frank Schmidt. Schmidt and Louis Ross, his landlord, have worked together on Wheels on Waterloo, a sculpture at the intersection of East 162nd Street, the Switch on Waterloo in front of his Waterloo 7 and on three “kinetic banners” at 152nd, 156th and 161st. Schmidt notes not one part of the 10 tons of steel he’s put on the street has been damaged. Despite his optimism, the self-styled neighborhood handyman – representing one of four generations to be a metal sculptor – says Waterloo isn’t all sunny. “There are downsides,” he says, noting realities inherent in many Cleveland neighborhoods. “The downsides are you cannot come into Waterloo with your eyes wide shut. You have to watch in the alleyways. When you walk, is it safe? It’s as safe as you make it.”

Investment means involvement If neighborhood poster girl and Beachland co-owner Cindy Barber is the Godmother of Waterloo, Brian Friedman is the

52

Jstyle Winter 2014

Godfather. As executive director of Northeast Shores, the area’s community development corporation, for the past 11 years, Friedman has been instrumental in linking people to money. “When I came here, the community really didn’t know whether to let blight and negative forces take over the neighborhood or if it was going to let the promise of a few people’s investments take hold and turn into positivity,” he says. “I was really fortunate that people like Cindy were really very stubborn about letting this neighborhood go away.” With the drive of people like Barber and Miles Kennedy, an artist, now deceased, who was instrumental in founding Arts Collinwood (now Waterloo Arts), the neighborhood hung on and more, Friedman said. Money – $11 million in a mix of federal funds, foundation support, city resources and private investment – has helped enormously. The cache, which includes $5.5 million in streetscape improvements, was many years in the making. “What makes us different from the other arts districts in the city is our obsession with owner occupancy and authenticity,” he says, “so all of the businesses on Waterloo Road are

independently owned. We actually don’t work with businesses that aren’t interested in being long-term investors because it’s a different mindset that comes with owning and it’s a long-term perspective that you don’t get when it’s a tenant with a three-year lease.” Homes in the area sell for $70,000 to $80,000, with some going for as little as $6,500. Home improvement grants are available, he says, as is a housing program aimed at keeping artists invested in the neighborhood. Waterloo is anti-chain and antifranchise, but if a property owner wants to sell to Starbucks, that’s fine, Friedman says. He has nothing against locals profiting on their equity. Michael D. Polensek grew up in Collinwood and Glenville and remembers when Collinwood was home to “the real old-core working-class Jews, especially those involved in labor unions.” These Jews attended synagogues in Euclid and Cleveland Heights, recalled Polensek, a Slovenian who for 36 years has represented the area as the Cleveland City Council member from Ward 8. “I think we’re on our way,” he says of Waterloo. “We still have some work to do. … We’re reinventing this

neighborhood through this development corporation,” he says during a recent visit to Northeast Shores. “You need to rebuild, reinvest or you disappear.” A core group of believers is key to any neighborhood, he suggests. The one in Waterloo is beginning to grow, “and when that takes hold, you’re really going to see the change.”

A neighborhood joint Alan Glazen remembers when the area between arts-heavy East 152nd and restaurant-rich East 185th was home to the Collinwood rail yards and bars were everywhere on Waterloo. Sitting in Waterloo Brew, the first A-Z Taverns outpost in Collinwood, Glazen says the “old-school neighborhood joint” is the first of several projects envisioned for the area. “I bought buildings I didn’t go inside,” says Glazen, whose father, a carpenter, grew up in Collinwood. “They weren’t that expensive. I wanted to make sure this neighborhood happens.” Ten years ago, at 55, he sold Glazen Advertising and Glazen Creative Studios to his companies’ managers, retiring from business to go back to school. A few years ago, with friends who knew their way around the restaurant

business, Glazen formed A-Z Taverns. There are ABC Taverns in University Circle and Ohio City, the XYZ Tavern in DetroitShoreway, the Ontario Street Café in the Gateway District – and now, Waterloo Brew in the Slovenian Workmen’s Home. Why Waterloo? “Because I am a big fan of Waterloo Road and the Collinwood neighborhood,” says Glazen, who has invested $500,000 in the neighborhood. “It’s the next Tremont, it’s the next Ohio City, it’s the next Detroit-Shoreway, and we wanted to be one of the first to lead the way. “Profitability now is redefined for me,” he says. “I won’t do anything that just makes money. LeBron plays basketball and I do business. We’re pushing toward 100 full-time jobs we’ve created in the last five years as a group, so at this point in a person’s career, you have to find your own way of giving back, and I don’t think it’s enough to write checks to organizations. It’s about helping people rebuild this community.”

The long view When Cindy Barber moved to the area in 1986, the population in Collinwood was starting to die off and younger people were moving to Eastlake or Mentor. Real estate agents were telling homeowners “the black population is coming; you better get out now, I’ll sell your house for you,” she says. And when her former husband went to get gas at the local station, hookers would proposition him.

At the same time, “there were a lot of artsy people who were already over here,” Barber says, “and as I saw Coventry (a cultural district in Cleveland Heights) getting taken over by outof-town investment firms buying up property and pricing people out of their little boutiquey places,” she figured Waterloo could take over the function. So she and her partner, Mark Leddy, put together a fiscal plan to take over the former Croatian Hall and turn it into the Beachland, which has earned a national reputation for maverick programming and community engagement. Eventually, a community banker helped the couple secure an FDA loan to buy the building at the heart of Waterloo. Barber and Leddy have never looked back. It’s been a slow march. “Cleveland still hasn’t gotten the message quite yet that the street looks really amazing now,” Barber says. “There’s more parking, more lighting, more things to do, amazing galleries, and there are starting to be more food options.” “At this point I think we have more active galleries than any other neighborhood I know in town shy of 78th Street Studios,” says Star POP’s Schwartz. “You can see a handful of openings, grab a bite to eat, see a concert. Certainly, when you include our immediate neighbors and some of the things that are slated to come, there’s no question you can have a full night.” Councilman Polensek is less reserved, conjuring a vibrant past when Waterloo was home to mom-and-pop stores, a hardware store, a delicatessen, all patronized by the many German Jews who lived there. When he was growing up, his neighbors were black, Jewish or Irish. Now the neighborhood has a chance to be rainbow. “This will be the East Side Arts and Entertainment District,” he says, “and what’s unique about this is because of its proximity to the lake – it’s 10 miles to downtown, four miles to the Lake County line – we have a real opportunity to create a multicultural, multiracial and multireligious neighborhood. Real cosmopolitan – an opportunity maybe the West Side doesn’t have.” js

Craving Health consciousness and Jewish identity behind millennials keeping kosher more than their parents Story and photography by Michael C. Butz

Kosher

n one counter, shredded cheese is added to a tossed salad and mocha smoothies are made in a blender, while on another across the kitchen, matzah balls are rolled and placed into a pot of chicken broth warming on a stove top. The occasion? A warm kosher meal on a snow-filled weeknight in midNovember at the home of Rabbi Yossi and Chaya Freedman, who lead Chabad of Downtown Cleveland. The cooks? Chaya and six 20-something millennials the couple has invited over for a meal at their downtown digs. The scene in the Freedmans’ kosher kitchen and around their dining table – involving not only the sound of a busy kitchen but also chit-chat and laughter among friends – is one many feel is playing out more frequently among this age set. Kosher food plays quite a part. “There’s a bigger awareness about eating kosher food in general,” says Rabbi Freedman, himself a millennial at age 29. “I can’t pinpoint people changing their lifestyle, but I know people are inquiring about it – which didn’t happen before.” Major media outlets like The New York Times, The Atlantic and NPR have all recently reported on trends surrounding the fact that millennials (generally defined as those born in the 1980s or later) keep kosher at a higher rate than their baby boomer parents (generally those born between 1946 and 1964). According to the Pew Research Center’s 2013 survey, “A Portrait of Jewish Americans,” Jews 18 to 29 years old and 30 to 49 years old keep kosher at home at rates of 27 percent and 28 percent, respectively. By comparison, only 17 percent of those 50 to 64 years old keep kosher, and only 15 percent of those 65 and older do so. What’s behind this? Three things, Freedman suggests: the common

56

Jstyle Winter 2014

conception that eating kosher is healthier, an increased availability of kosher options, and the desire among millennials to embrace their Jewish identity. “With millennials, there’s this idea of being out there and making an impact in the world. Being very aggressive with that probably also comes the push of showing off their Jewish identity,” he says. “It’s not very easy to do in other ways, but keeping kosher is an easy and more effective way to show that off.”

Mixed findings The Pew findings are unexpected to some. “I’m surprised,” says 25-year-old Cara Katz, one of the six millennials gathered at the Freedmans’ home. “Most of the people I’ve been around haven’t kept kosher. In college, I was definitely one of the only people who did that,” says 24-year-old Melissa Friedman, an Ohio University graduate. “It depends on the community. If you have people around you to support you … .” One local community – or entity that serves as a community – that supports keeping kosher is Moishe House, the

Cleveland Heights-based home that promotes Jewish connectedness among young adults through social activities like Shabbat dinners. It’s led by 20-somethings Mandy DuBro, Josh Kramer and Ben Sattin. “They had varying levels of observance, but I was by far the strictest,” says Sattin, 27, who started keeping kosher when he was 12 – the age at which his family moved to a house in Shaker Heights with a kosher kitchen. The decision to keep a kosher kitchen at Moishe House was in part personal to the three of them, Sattin says, but also to be more inviting to those who attended their events. “Even if I didn’t keep kosher, I think we still would’ve kept a kosher kitchen because we weren’t sure who we’d be inviting into the home and we didn’t want that to be a barrier,” he says. “I don’t

know if we’ve inspired anyone to keep kosher, but I do know there are people who keep kosher who’ve thanked us for providing for their needs.”

Of faith and health “Kosher is basically the Torah writing what is permissible for Jewish people to eat,” explains Freedman, referring to Chapter 11 of Leviticus. He also mentions chukim, or suprarational divine decrees that speak to the relationship between God and Jews. Freedman suggests that relational aspect might appeal to millennials. “It’s radical, it’s different and it’s rooted in faith,” he says. “It also gives a sense of discipline.” Expanding on the ties between keeping kosher and eating healthy, Freedman says they can go hand in hand. “In general, kosher over the long run has been associated more with ‘healthy’ than ‘nonhealthy.’ ... Because it was more meticulously watched (rabbis had to watch over the slaughtering, and there was a lot more inspection going on), people perceived it as a lot healthier,” he says. “Because that’s the common conception, and because of the increasing awareness about one’s own health and diet, it’s pushing more people toward the kosher standard. Like, if we’re going to try to be healthy, let’s try to adapt to kosher as well.” Freedman draws parallels to restaurants increasingly embracing the use of locally sourced food. “Because of the awareness of trying to eat healthier, people are trying to eat kosher – and that’s also why a lot of restaurants in downtown and in general are opening up the farm-to-table idea.”

Supply and demand Speaking of downtown, a new kosher

58

Jstyle Winter 2014

eatery is expected to soon open thanks in part to the neighborhood’s continued population growth. Downtown’s occupancy stands at 95.4 percent, and its residential population has grown to more than 13,000, according to Downtown Cleveland Alliance’s latest quarterly market update. Consider also that DCA projects that figure to nearly double to 25,000 by 2022 and that 25- to 34-year-olds have led the boom for the past decade, and it stands to reason that a good number of them will be millennials interested in kosher options. Enter Abby Aloni, the 35-year-old owner of Abby’s Soups and Salads. Her health-conscious food has taken her from cooking Shabbat dinners in her University Heights kitchen to a commercial facility in Cleveland’s MidTown district that allows her to distribute to local grocery stores and eventually to the atrium of 200 Public Square (formerly the BP Building), where by year’s end she plans to open a 300-square-foot takeout food stand to sell her vegetarian – and kosher – goods. “We hope 50 percent of business will be kosher and the other 50 percent will be from people who just want to eat good food,” says the congregant of Congregation Vichron Chaim in University Heights, whose Rabbi Moshe Garfunkel serves as her heksher. “I really believe healthy, fresh food can be made kosher in a way that’s appealing to everyone.” In deciding to open the food stand, Aloni cites the influx of millennials moving downtown as well as positive feedback she’s received for her stand from various downtown stakeholders. Also, she agrees with Freedman regarding similarities between keeping kosher and the farm-to-table movement and how people are more

in tune with what food they’re putting in their bodies. “The focus of my food is a little bit different than maybe what a lot of kosher food is typically seen as, which is matzah ball soup and other typically Jewish foods. My food is healthy, fresh, vegan and vegetarian food that happens to be kosher,” she says. “People who are health-conscious and working out, that would be the biggest pull to my food. I think that’s the appeal.”

Spread the word Back at the Freedmans’ home, where Chaya’s cheese lasagna left everyone smiling, all six of the millennial guests are residents of downtown Cleveland, and they agree that having more kosher dining options in their neighborhood would help broaden the Jewish community there among fellow residents and those who work downtown. “I think it’d be good,” says 23-year-old Heather Froimson. “The people I work with, they don’t really know many people who are Jewish, and that would help raise awareness.” Sattin says Moishe House’s kosher practices have helped raise awareness among non-Jews while also encouraging fellow Jews. “We’ve had non-Jewish friends who’ve learned about keeping kosher by joining us at Moishe House events,” he says. “For them, it’s a cultural interest. For Mandy, Josh and myself, it’s become subconscious. For others, it might be the only time they do something kosher.” Freedman says he recently was approached about preparing a kosher Browns tailgate for a group that included friends who don’t keep kosher but like the idea of it. For those interested in keeping kosher, Freedman suggests starting small. “I’d encourage people to start with baby steps, such as trying to keep milk and meat apart or buying things with kosher symbols, to slowly change your diet and slowly get used to it. Once you get used to it, it’s so easy,” he says. “If people can do it, it’s a very big mitzvah. Just like any other mitzvah, it’s very encouraging and feels very fulfilling.” js

ew York. New Orleans. Chicago. These have long been considered food destinations in America. And these days, so is Cleveland. The explosion of Northeast Ohio’s now-thriving food scene can in part be traced back 10 years, when dedicated local chefs and restaurateurs banded together to create Cleveland Independents, an organization that promotes independently owned restaurants. “Back then a lot of people didn’t realize the importance of independent restaurants in the market, not just the fact that they were there, but also the impact they have on the economy” says Myra Orenstein, who eight years ago became executive director of Cleveland Independents. “In Northeast Ohio, it is one of the top financial generators in the area. It’s had a huge impact on the local economy.” The organization, which today includes more than 90 locally owned and operated restaurants, spreads awareness of the burgeoning food scene. It also encourages foodies to explore local restaurants by hosting the annual Cleveland Restaurant Week and by offering The Deck, playing card-size savings at member restaurants. From Jonathan Bennett and Zack Bruell to Douglas Katz and Rocco Whalen, local chefs and restaurateurs are raising the bar when it comes to dining in Cleveland. “Most restaurants unfortunately have a short life,” Orenstein says. “Almost every one of the founding members (of Cleveland Independents) is still in business. That’s huge. We’re looking at people who have become household names in Cleveland. They’re still in business, they’re still thriving and many of them now have multiple units. To me, that’s a very big deal.”

We also cure our own graviax and smoke our own meats. Changing our menu almost daily makes this restaurant a constant source of food excitement.” – Ruth Levine, owner

hether long days at the office or short deadlines lead you to bring work home at night or write reports over the weekend or your start-up business is ready for upgrade from the garage to a more formal or professional space, there are many reasons to consider carving out a proper home office. And while functionality will likely be top of mind, design shouldn’t be overlooked. In fact, the right design can increase productivity and improve creativity. Someone with a unique handle on this concept is David Rosenberg, whose entire business is located inside a house in Lakewood. “We’re comfortably creative,” he says of Rosenberg Advertising. When he founded his marketing firm in 1981, he was the lone employee at a small office on South Miles Road that “didn’t have a lot of

66 Jstyle

personality.” In 1984, he and a handful of employees moved the business to downtown Cleveland’s Warehouse District, where it remained until 1999. “It was on the early side of the loft-style business spaces in downtown Cleveland,” he says, noting his three combined West Ninth Street spaces all had exposed-brick walls and wood ceilings. “We liked the feel, and it tied in with our culture. We wanted a space that was cool, that was fun.” By the time his lease was due to expire in 1999,

Rosenberg was interested in moving to a property he could own – and that would accommodate his company, which had grown to 12 employees. He searched Cleveland’s Ohio City and Tremont neighborhoods as well as its MidTown corridor to no avail. Then one of Rosenberg’s employees asked the native East Sider whether he’d considered Lakewood. A drive down Detroit Avenue eventually led him to a four-story, 4,000-squarefoot, 115-year-old house (“it has a lot of character”) across

from city hall that for the past 15 years now has served as home to Rosenberg Advertising. “We love it. It really complements the personality of the business; our culture is very family-friendly, and I think the home fits in with that,” says Rosenberg, noting his son, Austin, works for the company. “The space has really been perfect for us.” So how do you make your home office that “perfect space”? While housing a 14-employee business in a home might not directly translate to developing a personal home office, there are plenty of pointers to take from Rosenberg’s experience, the heart of which requires

Design elements to consider One of the first things visitors to Rosenberg Advertising notice is the house’s welcoming and comfortable environs. But how comfortable is too comfortable? For Rosenberg, the comfort level of the house is beneficial for employees and customers alike. “I think the house has attracted clients and people who are drawn to it, who think it’s cool and fun to work in,” he says. “It’s more of a motivator.” For home offices, though, be careful not to let the comfort level – can you honestly tune out the call of the flat screen TV in the neighboring room? – turn from motivation to distraction. Another focal point for Rosenberg Advertising is a couch that has become a place where employees can exchange ideas. “We actually just ordered some furniture for that. The couch is so well used that we’re ordering another couch and two more chairs to create more comfortable settings,” he says. The takeaway? Sometimes the best ideas don’t come while sitting at a desk. Other design elements to factor in are lighting, including natural lighting, of which there’s no shortage at Rosenberg Advertising thanks to the house’s large windows; colors conducive to productivity and that

don’t conflict with other rooms in your house; and privacy, which if necessary can be established by using boundary-setting dividers that double as bookshelves to provide adequate storage space – another essential for any oft-used home office.

Personalizing your space and changing things up All work and no play can sometimes make for unproductive – or worse, stressful – days. Thus, personalizing your workspace

with family photos or vacation souvenirs to bring balance to your work life is often a good thing. “Everybody customizes their individual space and makes it their own,” says Rosenberg of his employees. “There are a lot of different motifs going on.” Indeed. From an office space that includes a pinball machine and streetlight to another that houses an extensive bobblehead collection to Rosenberg’s own office, which includes bleacher seats from old Municipal Stadium in which guests and clients sit, the rooms that make up Rosenberg Advertising are interesting homes away from

home for employees. There’s also a wall-sized chalkboard in the snack room opposite a classic neon “Rosenberg Advertising” sign. Both add personality to the space. If your home office feels stagnant despite its personalizing, you could consider buying artwork or something else equally interesting to freshen things up – or simply moving around the items you already have. The latter has worked for Rosenberg. “In 15 years, we’ve made tweaks. We’ve rearranged seating patterns, we’ve knocked down some walls, we’ve moved furniture, we’ve repainted it and re-carpeted

it,” he says. “We’ve definitely changed the look of it. “Right now, we have five creative people – three designers and two social media people – in a space. We had them spread out at one point between the first and second floors, and we moved that around. Now, all the creative people are on the first floor and account executives are on the second floor,” he says. “Basically, it improved idea sharing between people who had similar functions.” While you might not want to knock down any walls for your home office, the takeaway from Rosenberg is that it’s worth re-evaluating your setup from time to

time to make sure it’s still conducive to completing the work you’re doing. Hominess and personality – and the willingness to modify your workspace as your needs change – can set the scene for both professional creativity and personal comfort. All those have worked for Rosenberg, who says the Lakewood house has been a “perfect space” for his business. “It’s worked out even better than I planned 15 years ago. It really has fit in not only with how we perceive ourselves but also how our clients perceive us,” he says. “Clients have told me they can’t see us working anywhere else, and I agree.” js

ADVERTORIAL

YOUR HOUSE TODAY, YOUR DREAM HOME

TOMORROW H ello,my name is Tali Israeli, and I would like to share my “Dream Home” story with you. Renovating a home can be a stressful and even intimidating challenge, but as a lifelong architect and designer in Israel, who recently emigrated to the US, I was excited to tackle converting our newly purchased condo into our families dream home.

3656 Massillon Rd. Uniontown, OH 44685 www.thevillagehandyman.com 330-896-2000

The challenge that I ran into was that here in the US, versus in Israel, renovation professionals of various trades (contractors, architects, designers) do not typically work under one operation, and the homeowner is stuck trying to cobble together everything that is needed to design, draw, and execute the perfect renovation. After interviewing 6 different contractors in a row, with none of the the things we were looking for, my husband Aviad and I were beginning to lose heart. I found what I was looking for in The Village Craftsmen, a true one stop shop for the seamless conversion of our 1980s condo into something truly special, reflective of my families unique taste and needs. With a staff architect, designers and 8 employee craftsmen instead of the usual train of lackluster subcontractors, our homes transformation was completed on budget and on time. As an architect, I have over 25 years of experience in assisting customers to make a decision whether to renovate their existing home or to build a new one. Many times this is not only a financial decision but an emotional decision as well. There are so many different details to consider! If you like your existing house and its location you may seriously consider renovating and upgrading what you already have. Once the renovation decision has been made, here are some considerations that I have distilled from decades of helping others modify theirs, and most recently renovating my own home: Do not settle for a generic design! Always work with professionals. When you need medical care you always seek a professional’s advice, the same with your car, why not do the same with

renovations before dumping thousands of dollar into a project that doesn’t meet your expectations? Renovating your investment is no less important.

1

Always work with an architect (when you do major design) or interior designer (when you do aesthetic updates), and always ask for recommendations and referrals from these professionals.

2

Renovate with a professional contractor. Ask to see previous projects (completed and in progress). Make sure your contractor is financially stable and does not sell the job to sub-contractors; instead look for a contractor that has in-house staff craftsmen for most of the work you need done to ensure the quality of the work. Talk with the contractor’s past clients and hear about their experiences.

3

Include all the variables and components of the project in the written proposal. Do not allow yourself (or your budget) to be at the mercy of unforeseen events, insist that all the work and materials will be included in the quote. This is a big one, and this is where it really pays to have true professionals guiding you through the process! If you follow these intuitive steps, you will have the home renovating experience that we dream about, not the kind we have nightmares about. Home remodeling should be a fun and fulfilling way to express yourself and create something that is truly unique and is yours, so take the time to find the right professionals to work with, and take the first step out of the house you live in today and into the dream home of your future!
