By Michael C. Butz & Jon Larson

Springtime in Kentucky is known for thoroughbred horse racing, but the Bluegrass State has much more to offer

V

isitors looking for blue grass in Kentucky, in a literal sense, will be disappointed to find none, but those looking to spend a weekend where the grass is greener, so to speak, will almost certainly be rewarded by a trip to the Bluegrass State. “It’s such a different scenery,” says Kentucky Department of Travel Commissioner Mike Mangeot. “In some of our research, we talk to folks up north, and they say that when they cross the Ohio River into Kentucky, everything is green.” Travel department media coordinator Marge Bateman – who lived in Cleveland’s West Park neighborhood until she and her husband moved to Kentucky in 1995 – called her new home state “beautiful.” “Once you cross the Ohio River, the land just starts to roll,” she says. “Especially since you’re probably coming down (Interstate) 71 from Columbus, where you have

that flat land. It’s like magic. “Spring comes so much earlier here,” says Bateman, comparing Kentucky to Northeast Ohio. “We mow the lawns in April. The daffodils are already blooming (in early March). By late March, all the daffodils are up, and by April, the redbud trees are blooming.” Scenery aside, Kentucky has much to offer out-oftowners, says Mangeot, adding that making the less-than-six-hour drive south is “really what you want it to be.” “If you want to relax and reconnect by unplugging, we have very nice bed and breakfasts and 17 state resort parks around Kentucky,

where you can hike, bike and ride horses,” he says. “If you want that urban night life, you have the Louisville-LexingtonCovington triangle.” Here’s a small taste of the Southern hospitality that spending a weekend – or longer – in Kentucky can offer.

Equestrian attractions While Louisville receives worldwide attention for the Kentucky Derby, held annually the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs, the state’s northern region offers much more. “There aren’t too many places crazier for horses than Kentucky,” Mangeot says. Churchill Downs is also home to the Kentucky Derby

Museum, which is open year-round and offers walking tours of the storied racetrack. Lexington is home to the Kentucky Horse Park, a working horse farm and “educational theme park” where more than 1,000 acres are devoted to equestrian activities and events. “While you’re there, you can book a tour of the horse farms,” Bateman says. Also in Lexington is Keeneland, another top-ofthe-line racetrack. “It’s a historic track and it’s a great place to watch thoroughbreds run,” Bateman says. In Georgetown, 16 miles north of Lexington, is Old Friends Equine, a retirement home and rescue facility for thoroughbreds whose racing and breeding days are behind them. Thirty-three miles east

Music lovers can plan a summer trip to Forecastle, an outdoor art and music festival first held in 2002. Akron natives The Black Keys are headlining this year’s festival, which will be held July 12-14 at Louisville’s 85acre Waterfront Park. Other acts scheduled to perform include The Avett Brothers, The Flaming Lips, Alabama Shakes, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, and Big Boi. “There’s a little bit of everything for everybody,” Mangeot says. “I don’t know if people think of Kentucky as they do Nashville as a place for music, but bluegrass was born in Kentucky. … Both Louisville and Lexington have very vibrant music scenes.”

Bed and breakfasts The state offers a number of picturesque places to stay, including 19 in the “Derby Region” surrounding Louisville and 24 in the “Bluegrass Region” surrounding Lexington, according to the Bed & Breakfast Association of Kentucky.

Mammoth Cave formations, the Jim Beam Distillery American Outpost and Churchill Downs spires are just a few of Kentucky's recognizable landmarks.

Noteworthy options include the 1851 Historic Maple Hill Manor B&B in Springfield, which is set in a renovated country estate home and is found on a working alpaca and llama farm; The Hill House Bed & Breakfast in Loretto, which is minutes from the Maker’s Mark distillery; and Pillow & Paddock Bed and Breakfast in La Grange, which offers a bed-and-breakfast experience close to Louisville.

Historic sites and museums Civil War buffs have a number of options, including the birthplace of former U.S. President Abraham Lincoln in Hodgenville – which serves as the starting site for Kentucky’s Lincoln Heritage Trail – and the birthplace of Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States, in Fairview. Civil War re-enactments are popular and offered at small towns throughout the region on actual battlefields. Rust Belt Chic Book suggests new ways to think about Cleveland By Carlo Wolff

A

nne Trubek chooses her words carefully when she discusses the concept of “Rust Belt Chic,” the name of the “Cleveland Anthology” she and Richey Piiparinen published last fall. She doesn’t speak gingerly of the book itself, however; she’s proud of the collection of writing the two assembled and published in a mere two months last year. The careful part enters into use of “rust belt chic” as a description. The term is catchy, indeed, particularly for Greater Cleveland residents familiar with the region’s trials, its gumption and – Trubek suggest – increasing optimism about its future. “Rust Belt Chic: The Cleveland Anthology” spans essays, photography and poetry all geared toward a critical celebration of Cleveland. For Trubek, the book is a form of giving back to an area that matters to her. It’s also a way to get people thinking about the city: what’s deplorable, what’s to tout,

what’s high style – even what to do to improve the place. One way to get at the thought behind the book is to separate its elements into “rust belt” and “chic.” The book is “an exercise that gives voice to a culture with a history of voicelessness,” Piiparinen says. That Greater Cleveland is associated with decay “has been the mesofact of our region,” a “fact that drives reality but not the total reality. We wanted to create a book that expanded beyond … all that’s lost.” One of the book’s aims is to change the psychology

of the region by helping it identify and affirm itself, suggests Piiparinen. There’s been a “huge diaspora of rust belt culture all over the country, so there’s a lot of potential to bringing all the human capital, intellectual capital and financial capital back,” he says. Another approach is to consider “rust belt” a view of the past, chic” as looking forward. An image of a renovated home that keeps a brick chimney exposed, rather than painted, may appear in the mind’s eye. “The goals of the book are to showcase local writers and develop this idea of rust belt chic, which focuses on what is distinctive about Cleveland and preserving that as we grow … as the region develops economically, there is sort of an economic development angle to it,” Trubek says in an interview at Dewey’s Coffee on Shaker Square. “It’s a very exciting time in town, and I think that what people are doing, a lot of it is looking to the past, from the very obvious things of renovating old warehouses and preserving some of the original industrial interiors to … a real emphasis on buying locally and frequenting local merchants.”

Giving back “Rust belt,” of course, also refers to the industrial past of the Midwest. “Chic” is

more generic. What ties them together is continuity and the notion of sustenance. It’s closely related to Trubek’s own motivation in conceiving the book: giving back, or what Trubek identifies as “mitzvah.” An associate professor of English at Oberlin College who moved to the area from Philadelphia in 1997, Trubek writes for local and national publications, including a “fair amount of pieces that are Cleveland-related,” she says. In “Rust Belt Chic,” she wrote about Cleveland poet Hart Crane; she also wrote about Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster for Smithsonian.com, the Smithsonian Institution’s online magazine. About a year ago, Trubek began organizing workshops for freelance writers seeking national outlets and came across Piiparinen’s work. An urban policy consultant, he has been featured on NPR’s Morning Edition and in the online magazine Salon. After discovering common concerns and ambitions, they decided to create “Rust Belt Chic” as testimonial to where they live. Trubek said it ”let us put our stamp on what’s happening in town rather than having it described by outsiders who are kind of observing what is happening in Cleveland.” Trubek left Oberlin for Shaker Heights in 2006 partially because of the area’s

t

Jewish community. She sees a lot of ”boomeranging” in that social segment. ”You grow up here, you go away for college, you establish your professional life, but then you return to raise a family,” says Trubek, a Reform Jew who attends The Temple-Tifereth Israel. Her 13-year-old son Simon attends the Ratner School in Pepper Pike.

RBC: a complex kid Piiparinen’s essay, “Anorexic Vampires, Cleveland Veins: The Story of Rust Belt Chic” sources the term to Joyce Brabner of Cleveland Heights. In 1992, Brabner, the widow of the late cartoonist-social commentator Harvey Pekar, said to an interviewer, “I’ll tell you the relationship between New York and Cleveland. We are the people that all those anorexic vampires with their little black miniskirts and their black leather jackets come to

Trubek

with their video cameras to document Rust Belt Chic.“ “We’re just basically these little pulsating jugular veins waiting for you guys to leech off some of our nice, homey, backwards Cleveland stuff,“ Brabner continued. Trubek says, “I think it’s important to get the complexity of the term. On one level, and this is what Joyce Brabner is referring to, it refers to a snotty perspective of those from the coasts

who think that the blue-collar aesthetic is cool but they are exploiting it, but on the other hand the term is saying there are specifics of this area, this city (Cleveland) in particular, that are distinctive and unique and we should celebrate them and build upon them rather than be ashamed or shy away or try to be glitzy in a different way. The polka hours hipsters are into now are a great example of taking an aspect of Cleveland’s past and culture and celebrating it in a new way by a new population.”

RBC fashion Those ’90s women in miniskirts and black leather jackets Brabner disdained may have symbolized New York fashion, but rust belt chic style is harder to sum up, Trubek suggests. Citing a Bert Stratton drawing of a guy in a Browns T-shirt “with his stomach showing and a can

of cheap beer,” Trubek says parody is one way to view it. Another honors and freshens the city’s past. “Buying clothes made in town or sold by local boutiques would be not just a tonguein-cheek aspect of it but a more serious aspect,” Trubek says, citing names linked to Cleveland’s legendary garment industry: The PrintzBiedermann Co., Richman Brothers, Joseph & Feiss Co. and Ohio Knitting Mills. At one point, 200 Jewish families were in that business, which at its peak employed 7 percent of the Cleveland work force, she says. Ohio Knitting Mills, revitalized by Cleveland Heights man Steven Tatar, is the survivor. Tatar, says Trubek, is doing “exactly what we’re talking about: renewal of the past, attention and respect for it, and making it work for today.” js

avigating the Cleveland International Film Festival is exhilarating but challenging. It can make you very hungry. Let’s connect the two. With movies playing Tower City Cinemas nonstop during the first two weeks of April, downtown Cleveland will be jammed; in 2012, 85,000 glued themselves in front of Tower City Center screens to view more than 320 movies, and this year, with an additional day on the schedule, last year’s attendance record might well be broken. (A few movies will screen at the Capitol Theatre in Cleveland’s Gordon Square Arts District, Cedar Lee Theatre in Cleveland Heights, and in Oberlin and Akron.) The numbers are staggering: 180 feature films and 164 shortsubject films from 65 countries are scheduled for this festival. No matter how much of a film buff you are, however, you have to eat (this is your Jewish mother talking) – particularly if you’re zipping from theater to theater, like fans that spend their vacation time at CIFF to see as many movies as they can jam into these very long days. The film festival is a feast for the eyes. But don’t forget to keep your eye on the feast. Give yourself a break. Check out these eateries. We’ve matched them to appropriate movies. Consider this a sampler; it doesn’t aim to be representative but it does transmit the flavor of the scene (we hope). Sometimes we stretch, but hey … The critical fact is that from Wednesday, April 3, to Sunday, April 14, movies are what Cleveland is about. But the city is also a top food destination. Downtown, above all, marries the two perfectly during the festival.

Aliyah

Khaana

Let’s start with “Aliyah” (the CJN is sponsoring the movie), a film about Alex, a Parisian Jew who dreams of getting to Tel Aviv, where his cousin Nathan is developing a restaurant. It sounds complicated and thrilling.

For an increased sense of urgency, we turn to “Khaana,” a short about a pregnant orthodox Muslim woman who lives in East London. It focuses on her preoccupation with food. Let’s try for an exotic pairing with this one.

Food Pairing: For tips on how to run a classy restaurant,

Food Pairing: Nearby Middle Eastern mainstays include

cousin Nathan might want to visit Johnny’s Bar on Fulton (3164 Fulton Road), an eatery specializing in abbondanza – and the original Johnny’s (there are outposts on West 6th Street and on Frankfort Avenue). Johnny’s on Fulton is a visual treat, too. johnnyscleveland.com

Record Breaker

For cuisine of a different stripe, we turn to “Foodie,” about a man counseling a friend experiencing a “supernatural digestive disorder.”

One of the longer shorts is “Record Breaker,” a film about a health-food storeowner and his obsession with breaking records. His fix is creating new categories; he’s preparing to walk up Macchu Picchu on stilts.

Food Pairing: Spaghetti and pizza figure in this, so try

Food Pairing: A tough category – there’s no designated

Key of Life

On the Italian front, we turn to “The Sugar Wars: The Life Story of Angelo Lonardo,” a documentary about the son of Cleveland mob architect Joseph “Big Joe” Lonardo. It features an interview with Angelo after he returned from the witness protection program.

Can’t leave out Japan, which presents us “Key of Life,” billed as a “screwball comedy” about identity, crisis and more.

Food Pairing: Since the Capitol is in Gordon Square, try eclectic, stylish Luxe & Kitchen Lounge, 6605 Detroit Ave. luxecleveland.com For a downtown meal, try La Strada at 2050 E. 4th St. (we keep coming back to this strip). Terry Tarantino’s “world café” boasts cuisine that blends Mediterranean, Italian, Spanish and Greek flavors. No word on whether Terry is kin to Quentin. lastradacleveland.com INFO: 92 minutes, directed by Benoit Delepine and Gustave Kervern SCREENINGS: Friday, April 5, 4:15 p.m.; Saturday, April 6, 6:25 p.m.

Le Grand Soir A French flick that looks well worth seeing is “Le Grand Soir,” about a punk man and his square brother. When the square loses his job, the punk carries him, turning him onto the notion that survival means more than getting along. Looks rowdy and colorful.

Food Pairing: Sans Souci Mediterranean Cuisine in the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel has been taking armchair travelers to France for quite some time. Downeast On a nautical note, “Downeast” looks to be a fascinating inquiry into part of the economic shape shifting roiling American industry. It’s a documentary about the death of the sardine industry in Maine and the struggle to replace it with lobster business.

Food Pairing: Try these two, both in the Warehouse District: Blue Point Grille, 700 W. St. Clair Ave. 216-875-7827 and Nauti Mermaid, 1378 W. 6th St. thenautimermaid.com At Blue Point, the lobster Bolognese (lobster, penne pasta, spinach and Parmesan) looks good; at the far less formal Nauti, the Caribbean conch ceviche (a roadside shack standby in Jamaica) sounds juicy. Sardines? You’ll have to look elsewhere. js

pring cleaning can be more than just dusting and washing windows. Take some time to go through the house and look at each room. Clean up the aspects you don’t like. There are plenty of updates that can be made throughout to make things look fresh and exciting, and there are often tips and tricks to make them easy and affordable. indow treatments can be an easy and cost-effective way to breathe life into a tired dining room and can even make it more comfortable. “You don’t want to sit down at a dining room table with the sun in your eyes,” said Sharon Agin, president The right curtains and dressings can really unify the room. of Earl R. Agin & Associates, Photo / sharon agin Inc. With the right shades, you can bring them down just enough to still let you see outside and “have dinner without putting sunglasses on.” The right dining room window treatments can definitely “make it look more finished,” said Agin. Choosing a decorative window rod with end panels can “tie the room together” and complement the floors and “everything else going on in a room.” For something a little different, interior shutters are another way to control lighting and they’re “a big step up from a wood blind.”

here are many workarounds that can give the kitchen area a fresh look without costing as much as a full remodel. For those who are happy with their cabinets but want something new, “laminate countertops are starting to mimic the look of stone,” said Scott Herceg, president of Kitchen Design. “There are numerous edge treatments to make it look like real stone.” Cabinet re-facing is another way to make things look new without a complete makeover. This involves removing the drawers, door fronts and cabinet boxes and replacing them with new components. While re-facing, it’s even possible to add rollout drawers or other modifications. Herceg said, “Within a week, we can transform your kitchen. It’s half the cost and half the mess.”

Bedroom A bed frame with storage can help clear the room of excess furniture and unwanted clutter. Photo / Ligna

Treat yourself like royalty hese days, beds have become “more of a lifestyle item,” said Michael Rogoff, owner of Metro Home. “One thing people should consider is upsizing the bed to a king size.” Rogoff says people are doing more from the comfort of their beds, like reading or watching TV, and having the extra space is a benefit. Some refrain from a king-size bed because they already have a queen-size headboard, but “it doesn’t have to match,” Rogoff said. Storage beds are great investments because they can eliminate the need for other furniture in the room and free some space. In terms of de-cluttering, Rogoff also says to get rid of excess pillows. “Make your life easy. You sleep on your bed. You don’t show it off to guests.”

eep the bathroom in mind when updating the house for spring. After all, it’s a room most people visit first thing in the morning. A luxurious bathroom can help you “put the spring in your step as you wake up,” said Liza Blackman, co-owner of Pink Pineapple Home. Blackman offered several simple suggestions. Adding a more decorative mirror with borders can completely change the room. “Make it a piece of artwork,” she said. You can also add a decorative light fixture or chandelier to the bathroom. “A new light can make you feel happier,” Blackman said. Try adding candles and soaps with matching fragrances to make sure you’re surrounded by pleasant scents. “A bathroom doesn’t have to be a place you just walk in and out of,” Blackman said. “It can be a place just to enjoy relaxing. Turn it into a luxury pad."

ecks can be a source of joy of frustration. Consider the options when choosing to add or upgrade. Many materials that cost less up front can require more maintenance. Cedar needs to be painted or stained every year, said Heidi O’Neill, owner of O’Neill Landscape Design and Installation. Synthetic materials like Trex can cost more, but they’re much more resistant to the elements. All the moisture in our climate can cause wood support systems to rot if uncared for, but now there are metal support systems, O’Neill said. As long as the support system is in good shape, you can resurface an old or weathered deck for a new, clean look. A covering can extend the enjoyment of a deck or patio. “We have a lot of evenings that are warm but drizzly,” O’Neill said. And keep in mind, “south or west-facing spaces need shade.”

Family Room Lighting plays a role in family room comfort

T

he family room is an important gathering space for having guests over and even for day-to-day family get-togethers. Re-furnishing it can be costly and involve a lot of work. Give it a figurative coat of fresh paint by rethinking the windows. “New window treatments should focus on light, airy views, privacy, versatility and energy efficiency,” said Bob Bernstein, owner of Miles Park Window Treatments. “Today’s window coverings have adapted well for all of these concerns.” Bernstein recommends Silhouette and Pirouette window shades to filter out harsh light and eliminate “almost all” ultraviolet rays. Adding the right shades can add privacy and even insulation if desired. Screen shades are a great way to save on cooling costs by shading the interior without much compromise when it comes to a view of the outdoors. Adding shades can save on cooling costs and increase comfort.

What are you having? Jewish Clevelanders share their signature drinks

Andrew Zelman

Adam S. Kaufman

Michael Friedman

Realtor, Howard Hanna Realty

General manager, Ganley Bedford Imports

What is your favorite drink? Moscow Mule. How is it made? It's made with vodka, ginger beer and a lime wedge. Where is it made the best, and where do you enjoy drinking it? Fahrenheit Restaurant, where it is served in a copper mug. Why a Moscow Mule? This may be an odd answer because I've only had this drink one time. I chose it because the first and only time was at my 30th birthday dinner. It was an amazing night spent with family and friends, and the Moscow Mule will now be my go-to drink.

My favorite drink is ‌. a Bombay Sapphire on the rocks with a wedge of lemon. How is it made? It's made by pouring the delicious gin over ice cubes and squeezing the lemon into it. Where did you first drink it? I had it in Naples, Fla. about seven years ago when a friend who drinks it had too much to drink. I took the drink meant for him and drank it. I loved it. To me there is not a better drink. It's got a great taste, and I find it much more interesting than vodka!

Spring 2013

My favorite drink ‌. other than the five bottles of water I try to drink every day, is Ciroc vodka on the rocks with an orange slice. How is it made? It is very simple to make. It is made by pouring Ciroc vodka into a glass with ice cubes and cutting an orange slice. When will you order it? I am a very casual drinker. I prefer to drink it on Saturday nights after a long day of work or when I go out for dinner. Any bartender could make it; it is very simple. Why Ciroc when there are so many choices? The most I will drink is two drinks. I tend to only drink on Saturday nights when I am out at a nice restaurant such as Fleming’s or Hyde Park. When I am halfway through with my drink, I pour water into it to extend the drink, and so I am not tempted to drink more. Most of my friends drink Grey Goose or Ketel One, but I like to be different, so that's why I chose Ciroc. I also love to eat the orange at the end of my drink because that's where the alcohol is.

Sherry Foxman Owner, Party 411 What is your favorite drink? A white russian, but I haven't had one in 20 years because I get in trouble. How is it made? Vodka, coffee or chocolate liqueur (I prefer chocolate), mixed with half-and-half. Where is it made the best, and where do you enjoy drinking it? It's made well everywhere... especially at Rick's Cafe in Chagrin Falls. I love it because it doesn't taste like liquor. When was the first time that you tried a White Russian? The First time I had it was at the Winking Lizard on Miles Road when they were just one restaurant. It made me feel so giddy. I approached a complete stranger whom I ended up dating for quite a long time. Thus, I no longer drink.

What'sMyStyle

Style What's My

DEBBIE ROTHSCHILD

DIRECTOR, NORTHERN OHIO JEWISH NATIONAL FUND MY STYLE: Simple, comfortable and easy. FASHION LESSON: My mother, Estee Timbers, passed away very recently. Everyone always commented on my mother’s beautiful style and the way she carried herself. She was a very attractive woman who loved to shop for, critique and wear stylish clothing and accessories. The best advice she gave me was to buy good quality. It’s worth the extra cost if you buy something that holds up well and you truly enjoy wearing. IN MY CLOSET: A good pair of black leggings and cool boots. I love to wear them with a fun tunic. You can go anywhere with that look. I could not live without a flowing black cardigan that I can throw over just about anything. The truth is, I love jewelry. I love the good stuff. I love the fun stuff. I love having a lot of different funky pieces that I can wear to add style to my otherwise fairly plain clothing. SHOPPING IN CLE: I have found that a lot of my favorite items are from Fine Points on Larchmere. SPRING 2013 FASHION MUSTHAVE: I’ve got my eye out for a fabulous black and white jacket. I love polka dots. FASHION IDOL: My mom knew what to wear to any occasion. She had an eye for dressing appropriately. I used to hate showing up someplace and worrying about whether my mom was going to tell me what she thought of my clothing choices. The truth is – even when I didn’t want to hear it – she was always right. FAVORITE SPRING 2013 TREND: Black-and-white color block. I love that yellow gold is making a comeback.

Stylish Clevelanders share their fashion tips, must-have items and favorite shopping destinations. By Gina Fabian

HARLAN MILLER SENIOR VP AND PRINCIPAL, VIVIDFRONT My style: I’ve changed a lot over the years, but haven’t we all? Today, in two words, I guess I’d have to say “fashionably conservative.” AGENCY FASHION THROUGH THE YEARS: When I started in the ad business, it was at the end of the “Mad Men” era, and all the – men including the creatives (writers and art directors) – wore jackets and ties. As we moved into the late ’60s and early ’70s, the business and account staff continued to wear jackets and ties while the creatives began wearing just about anything they wanted – jeans, bandanas, long hair. There were some crazy looks, but those were some crazy times. Today, casual is the norm across the board, with the exception of some client meetings. TREND YOU WISH NEVER EXISTED: All fashion from the ’70s should be expunged from the history books. Fat, gaudy ties, huge jacket lapels, giant shirt collars, funky flowerpatterned shirts, Fu Manchu mustaches, long sideburns. I have never seen a photo of any guy from that era that looked good – including myself. Shopping in CLE: I tend to shop at different stores for different things. The ones I frequent most are J3 Clothing, Gentleman’s Quarters, Ticknors and Nordstrom. FASHION MUST-HAVE: Unlike days gone by, I have to have a variety of great jeans in different colors, black dress slacks and sport jackets, so I can dress up or down. RECENT PURCHASE: It was yet another pair of great jeans from Gentleman’s Quarters. They – along with J3 Clothing – have the best.

Trend you wish never existed: Whoever came up with the “empire waist” tops? I put them on and immediately look like I’m five months pregnant.

Fashion advice: While I consider myself to have a pretty good taste level, I really trust my wife Barbara when it comes to what’s hot and what’s not, what’s in and what’s out, and what looks good (on me), and that’s really important when buying. Even though it’s in and fashionable, it may not be right for you.

JUDI FENIGER

Myra G. Orenstein

PRESIDENT & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, GORDON SQUARE ARTS DISTRICT (home of 78th Street Studios) Favorite season:I like winter because there are so many great ways to mix and match as you bundle up against the cold: tights, scarves, leggings, coats and boots. IN MY CLOSET: This past winter, it was cashmere leggings in black and in charcoal. SHOPPING IN CLE: Nola True in Chagrin Falls, and I can’t wait for the expanded Yellowcake to reopen in Gordon Square. Also, Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th. Spring Must-Have: A new pair of sunglasses. FASHION IDOL: Jackie O, who looked as perfectly put together in jeans and a turtleneck as in a Chanel suit. FAVORITE SPRING TREND: They’re showing great monochromatic looks. I love black and white together. ONE TREND I WISH NEVER EXISTED: I finally got used to Uggs, but never figured out Crocs on adults. RECENT PURCHASE: A terrific Boho Chic dress from Knuth’s in Landerwood Plaza; it’s comfortable, versatile, colorful and always looks great. Look by Lafayette 148 from Lisa Moran Ltd. Sunglasses by Jimmy Choo from Safilo Group

OWNER, CATV, INC. My style: Classic but trendy. Fashion lesson: I’ve learned over the years to purchase traditional pieces. Favorite season: Fall, because I love sweaters and I am partial to black, grays, and browns colors. They work the best with my hair and skin tone. GO-TO DESIGNERS: Helmut Lang for asymmetrical pieces. Vince for sweaters. Also, Max Mara. IN MY CLOSET: A black dress and a really nice white blouse. Shopping in CLE: Knuth’s SPRING MUST-HAVE: A duffle shape handbag in yellow or orange. FASHION IDOL: Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel. She was ahead of her time and a strong woman. Her styling was impeccable. SIGNATURE STYLE: I look at my style more as a palette then a particular clothing style. For example, dresses are a background to hair and makeup. I work with Dior’s cosmetic line and have learned to appreciate what makeup can do. SPRING TREND: I love Kate Spade’s spring line. The collection is filled with bowdetailed accessories. It’s very retro Jackie Kennedy. The bow accents add a nice surprise to classic pieces. TREND YOU WISH NEVER EXISTED: Teased hair. The whole Disco era – along with satin shirts – was awful. LATEST FASHION PURCHASE: A simple silk peach dress. It’s a perfect dress to wear day or night. For work, I can wear it with simple shoes, or I can accessorize it for evenings. TRUST WORTHY SOURCE FOR FASHION ADVICE: Colin Lively, a former Clevelander hair-stylist based in New York City. He has an uncanny ability to look at women, truly appreciate what they should be wearing and address it with great style and flare. He has the ability to assess what works for every woman based on her lifestyle and her interests. Makeup by Dior from Nordstrom Clutch with bow details by Kate Spade from Nordstrom

Spring 2013

Still, warmer weather would be nice. “I’m so done with winter,” says Monica Lacks, a 48-year-old Shaker Heights attorney and member of Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple in Beachwood. “Once I’m out there, I’m fine with it, but it takes me so much longer to do a winter run,” she says, noting the time involved with wearing extra articles of clothing and keeping her running shoes in good condition. Steve Tepper, a 47-year-old locksmith from Beachwood, agreed, adding, “You deal with it” to avoid running on the so-called “dreadmill.” “In Cleveland, you don’t have much choice,” said Tepper, a member of Park Synagogue in Cleveland and Pepper Pike. “I’m definitely looking forward to the warm weather.” As that warm weather takes hold over Northeast Ohio, both Tepper and Lacks will be training for the various races in which they’ll participate this year. Lacks will take part in the 2013 Hermes Cleveland 10 Miler on April 27 in Cleveland; the UPMC Health Plan Pittsburgh Half Marathon on May 5 in Pittsburgh; The Gathering Place’s 2013 Race for the Place on June 2 in Beachwood; and the 2013 Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus

Marathon on Oct. 20 in Columbus. Lacks admitted she hasn’t always been a runner. “I didn’t start running until college when I put on my ‘freshman 15.’ I came home and ran with my father that summer,” she says, explaining that her father had long enjoyed running. From that point forward, her interest in running grew. “I’d always done 3- to 5-mile runs throughout grad school just to stay in shape,” Lacks says, adding that as she approached her 40s, she became interested in running long-distance races. “I found it meditative, and it was a time in my life that I wanted to start setting goals. … (Running) keeps me in shape and keeps me emotionally charged at the same time.” She now runs four to five times a week year-round, and this year’s Columbus marathon will be Lacks’ fourth. She’s previously run the New York marathon (2010), the Akron Marathon (2011) and the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon (2012) in Minneapolis-Saint. Paul. “When I’m training for a marathon, I usually do a 16to 18-week plan,” she says, adding that she prefers to have a regiment to follow and intends to run distances of 18, 20 and 22 miles in preparation for the 26.1-mile race in October. Tepper will run in the Fools Trail Run 25K on April 7 in Peninsula; the Rite Aid Cleveland Half Marathon May 19 in Cleveland; the

Bank of America Chicago Marathon on Oct. 13 in Chicago; and the ING New York City Marathon on Nov. 3 in New York. Tepper didn’t start running until about the time he turned 40. “It was Thanksgiving or something, and everyone was sitting around the table talking about what exercise equipment they use and what machines they use at the JCC – even my father, who was approaching 80 at the time,” he says. “I thought to myself ‘I don’t do anything. I have to do something, I can’t just sit here.’ “I started off on the treadmill, and eventually thought I’d try doing a race,” he said. “I did a 10K – I didn’t even know how far 10K was." To date, Tepper has competed in five marathons. In doing so, he’s become familiar with how his body responds to various conditions and adjusts his training accordingly. “There’s a training schedule I use, but I tweak it to fit around my schedule,” he says. “If I feel good one day, I’ll run farther, or if I don’t feel good, I’ll cut it short.” Locally, he said one of his favorite places to run is the Cleveland Metroparks’ North Chagrin Reservation. However, he also enjoys the races he runs in other cities. “It’s nice to run in different places,” he says. “It’s nice to see another city and the sites, and it’s a different course.” js
