Paul and I have a swinging good time in Lincoln Park, Tremont’s central, public green space that frequently hosts outdoor performances and festivals.

Margi’s GREAT ESCAPE:

Tremont by margi herwald zitelli photography by matt defaveri

HOW many nights have I wiled away with Cleveland actors at Prosperity pub in Tremont? Cleveland’s historic Near West Side neighborhood started out as a largely Eastern European and Greek enclave. It was also the site in the 1850s of the former Cleveland University – hence its street names Professor, College and Literary. Today, Tremont is home to trendy bistros and pubs, some of Cleveland’s finest upscale dining (including Michael Symon’s Lolita, which to our chagrin, was closed when we visited), unique galleries and shops, and a popular art walk. On a sun-drenched afternoon, I rallied myself (despite a growing baby bump) to trek through Tremont with JStyle senior advertising account executive Paul Bram and graphic designer Jon Larson.

In Visible Voice Books, I find many cozy nooks in which to curl up with a good book. The five-year-old establishment also features café tables, snacks, author events and concerts, and a great collection of Cleveland-centric books.

Less than a year old, The Nest in Tremont (near Edison’s Pub) boasts an inviting collection of local handmade art. Paul and I peruse the jewelry and tchotchkes, but we are particularly struck by local artist Colleen Smith’s collages of Cleveland landmarks.

Jon and I wander into The Paul Duda Gallery and Rob Hartshorn Studio & Gallery, a double billing of local art. We took in Duda’s striking photographs of Cleveland landmarks, and Hartshorn let us watch him work on a painted portrait while we discussed the area’s art offerings.

Every even slightly fashionconscious girl in Cleveland loves Banyan Tree. Unfortunately, my bundle of joy makes it impossible for me to fit into any of the chic dresses or adorable shorts on display. Instead, I spend my time in the baby and toys section. (They also carry housewares and jewelry.) We spend way too much time exploring the two floors of treasures at the Cleveland Auction Company. A retail store of vintage clothing, furniture, housewares, knicknacks and oddities culled primarily from estates, four times a year it houses lively auctions of its goods. Paul discovers the sporting goods section – right next to the cigar store Indian section.

At the 10-year-old Eye Candy Gallery, Jon and I find eclectic ceramics, prints and even a guitar among the funky, brightly colored mix of work by Northeast Ohio artists.

Lilly Handmade Chocolates is a four-year-old, air-conditioned oasis of fancifully decorated truffles spiked with flavors like key lime. While I’m salivating over the chocolates, Jon is drawn to Lilly’s extensive collection of craft beers.

Of course we stopped for ice cream! Within the muraled walls of Tremont Scoops, we refresh ourselves with cones and shakes.

For a sweet finish, Jon and I stop at A Cookie & A Cupcake. The more than three-year-old bakery is expanding soon to include an ice cream shop using only local dairy. But for now, Jon contents himself with a decadent chocolate and salted caramel cupcake. â–˛

survive without our volunteers,” he says. “They are the lifeblood of our organization and provide the energy and inspiration for all of us.” MedWish’s yearly brigade trips to developing countries, led by the organization’s founder Dr. Lee Ponsky, involve a volunteer team of doctors, nurses and paraprofessionals who pay their own travel expenses including food and lodging. These volunteers help relieve overburdened medical staff in rural areas. Kravitz points to many reasons why a developing country might need aid. “It could be an unstable political situation, climate change or natural disasters,” he says. “There is a myth that the countries we help have no medical teams or extremely antiquated medical supplies. The truth is, there are some great clinics in these countries, but they are often vastly under resourced.” “Josh was the most sought-after recruit in the medical supply recovery industry; he knows the business extremely well and knows how to grow our organization responsibly,” said Ponsky. “With Josh’s leadership, I have no doubt we will continue to grow exponentially and maintain our impeccable integrity as a nonprofit organization. It speaks volumes of MedWish and Cleveland that we are able to recruit someone like Josh, and I have no doubt he will be pleasantly surprised with warmth and support of our community.” As executive director, Kravitz will oversee the implementation of a strategic plan to take MedWish to the next level. “There are so many opportunities in a medical resource-rich city like Cleveland to grow our surplus recovery organization,” he says. “A strategic plan will define the best avenues for growth to benefit our hospital partners and recipient agencies.” Kravitz also wants to explore sending medical experts to visit MedWish recipients after help has been given. “In our desire for sustainability, we 20

A ticket from the chief of

‘Fashion Police’

by arlene fine

COMEDIAN,

actress, red carpet interview pio-

neer and fashion maven Joan Rivers stopped in Cleveland this spring to bring her unique brand of stand-up comedy to PlayhouseSquare. JStyle caught up with the feisty host of the E! channel’s “Fashion Police” and asked her about styles and starlets.

Q.

What reaction do you get from celebrities

mentioned in a “Fashion Police” segment?

A.

They either love me or hate me – it doesn’t

bother me either way. My job is allegiance to the audience, so I have to tell the truth as I see it. The same is true with a theater critic – if you get a great review, you love the critic, and if you are panned, the critic is an idiotic. I don’t worry if Halle Berry gets upset because I don’t like her dress – if I don’t tell the truth, it is the end of the show. Viewers expect me to be honest.

Q. What are some current fashion trends noncelebrities should look for?

A. Pleats are in, but no one should wear pleats. Floral prints are big – I love them. Feminine lace is great, and you’ll see sparkles and sequins for day and night. It’s great because women can dress like Barbie dolls.

Q. What’s the rule of thumb with fashion? A. Your clothes should make you feel happy, and it’s fun playing dress-up with real clothes. If you make a fashion mistake – what’s the worst that can happen? You look foolish – big deal. Go home and change.

Q. What is your fashion style? A. Over the top dowager – or a cross between Margaret Thatcher and Madonna. I love lace and furs, particularly when I can add them to a vintage piece of clothing. I shop my closet, but I adore going shopping with (daughter and “Fashion Police” executive producer) Melissa (Rivers) at Barneys or Bergdorf’s. I realize money isn’t the key to happiness, but with lots of money, you can have the key made.

Q. What is your fashion guilty pleasure? A. I buy some of my shoes at Payless, and I adore shopping at the cheap jewelry stores in malls and at airports for anything that sparkles. And tell me, why not? ▲ 24

swimming pool does not reflect a desire to swim laps or cool off. The sprawling, irregularly shaped pool was created out of love for his wife Linda. It is the central feature in a sanctuary of flower gardens, patios, a Florida room extension, and a second-floor porch. “The pool and whole backyard are an expression of my love for my wife,” says Joseph, a retired real estate attorney and consultant. “As an aside, it has served as a wonderful magnet for bringing the kids back home.” Joseph, 65, conceived of the project after his wife Linda was in an automobile accident in July 2002. She suffered a traumatic brain injury and needed to be close to a Cleveland hospital, which meant the couple

Building an in-ground pool Once you decide to build an in-ground pool, several details need to be considered, according to Dave Hastings, a pool construction consultant and owner of Hastings Water Works, which maintains the Beachwood Family Aquatic Center among some 200 commercial and residential pools.

Primary goal “Sit down and speak with your spouse,” Hastings says. “What are you using the pool for? Is it strictly for the kids or for mom and dad for entertaining? Next time you go to a pool, watch.” Are family members primarily using the diving board, or are they mainly in water that’s 3 to 5 feet deep? The intended use of the pool helps dictate the size and depth needed. For example, if a person wants a pool mainly for lap swimming, the pool will need to be longer and narrower.

Diving boards and slides “A diving board can be a blast,” Hastings says. “Just know it’s taking a large portion of the pool.” In fact, with size and depth requirements, a diving board consumes about a third or more of the pool, he notes. A sliding board requires only 5 to 6 feet of depth, but may become a less popular feature as children get older.

Location “Most people want a pool in the backyard for convenience,” Hastings says. “But stand out there at 5, 6, 7 and 8 o’clock. A lot of people like to swim in the evening. Let’s see where the shade is. Notice the trajectory of the sun. It’s much cooler in the shade than in the sun.” Also look at the trees, he advises. If they’re 20 feet tall now, they could be much taller in a few years.

A hot tub with room for most of the extended family is conveniently located at the shallow end of the pool. “We had never wanted a pool before because it was a liability,” Joseph says. However, the protected retreat took on new purpose for his wife and their children and grandchildren. “To coin another cliché, we wanted a slice of paradise.” The pool, which stretches across the yard, ranges from three inches to six feet in depth. “We have a lot of babies,” Joseph says. “A mother can be on a lounge chair in the water with her

don’t need two separate ovens or even two prep areas to

maintain a kosher kitchen and cook traditional favorites for Shabbat and Jewish holidays. But it certainly makes keeping the laws of kashrut a lot easier. The state-of-the-art kosher kitchen in Shaker Heights pictured on these pages was designed with two ovens, two cooktops, three sinks (one exclusively for dairy prep), two microwaves and two dishwashers, arranged in two side-by-side work areas. One kitchen is used to prepare dairy foods, and one, for meat dishes. During the remodeling, the homeowner bumped out walls to increase the size of the kitchen, incorporating a little-used porch. Creating two kitchens is a trend for larger homes when the homeowner keeps kosher, says Georgia Gancz, a Realtor with Howard Hanna. “People who can afford it are looking for two separate kitchen areas.” But there’s more to keeping kosher than not mixing dairy and meat preparation. For religiously observant Jews, work, which includes even turning on the oven, is prohibited on Shabbat. To obey Jewish law, the Shaker Heights homeowner installed KitchenAid appliances, which have special modes for kashrut cooking and a heksher (kosher seal of approval) from Star-K, a kosher certification agency based in Baltimore. Other manufacturers of high-end appliances also make Sabbath- and yom tovcompliant equipment that carry the Star-K heksher. Those keeping kosher cook the food before Shabbat begins and use a warming tray or drawer to keep the food hot, said Gancz, who keeps kosher and has two free-standing ovens and two separate kitchen areas in her own home. Cooks also use a

blech, a thin metal plate put on top of a gas burner that’s left on very low before Shabbat begins, she said. The flame is covered, but there still is adequate heat to keep food, such as chicken soup, hot for the Shabbat meal. On yom tov (the day of a Jewish holiday), once the oven is on, you can raise or lower the temperature, but there can be no digital display, icon, light or fan that signals the oven’s operation, says Gancz. She disconnected a light in one of her two ovens because there was no other way to keep the light from turning on ➣ CLEVELAND JEWISH NEWS

kitchen, she simply removed the light bulb so she doesn’t have to remember to unscrew it for Shabbat and holidays. However, some kosher cooks will install under-counter freezer and refrigerator drawers to maintain separation between meat and dairy products, says Leah Heinsius, senior designer at Faralli Kitchen & Bath in Willoughby Hills. Sub-Zero and Wolf are the first appliance manufacturers to integrate their appliances into a home’s electrical wiring, says Heinsius. “You can program your appliances to automatically go off or into the Sabbath mode, without your having to switch something on or off.” Beyond appliances, kosher kitchens require separate drawers and cabinets for storage of milk and meat dishes, utensils and pots, says Heinsius. Some kosher homeowners install an additional dishwasher, often a small one, such as an 18-inch-wide dishwasher made by Miele, she says. Samuel “Jack” Horwitz, M.D., of Beachwood recently finished a cherry table for one of his granddaughters, but he likes to use a variety of more exotic woods, like wenge from Africa, for his personal projects and often mixes them to create unique pieces. “I don’t usually sketch my projects ahead of time,” he says, so he often designs as he creates the piece. His pieces include a mahogany armoire with wenge legs, cherry trim, and butterfly inserts of purpleheart; a silverware cabinet, right, made of striped maple and walnut; and this table, with a top made from bubinga with wenge inlays and the leg/frame in walnut ebonized with India ink. The South Africa native has been making furniture since shortly after he was married, including out of necessity making a changing table for his first baby. 42

Albert Pollack of South Euclid built this tall china cabinet and dining room table, which when expanded accommodated 28 holiday guests, and installed hardwood floors throughout his home, choosing ash for its durability. He also made the divided dish and the tray on top, which was designed to protect hands from a hot ceramic dish. His grandchildren have enjoyed handmade jewelry boxes and recipe boxes as gifts. After a table’s glass top broke, Pollack made a replacement from leftover floorboards. His house is filled with examples of his craftsmanship, but he doesn’t consider it a hobby. “I make what I need,” he explains. Pollack’s many other projects include decks, a hot tub enclosure, a pantry that utilizes oftenwasted space near the basement stairs, and a narrow table for an end of the kitchen. “With the economy how it is,” he says, “people should try to do things themselves.” Pollack’s philosophy of self-sufficiency is not limited to building furniture: He and his wife Madelyn grow their own vegetables, berries and herbs, which are irrigated with water collected in a system of

realized he was staring at the storage situation in a corner of her small kitchen. Levine, of University Heights, built Sachs a customized storage unit to fit between the refrigerator and wall, carefully measuring her tallest cookbooks to make sure the shelves would accommodate them. The cabinet’s deep drawer holds the less-used small appliances that were taking up her counter space, while a shallow drawer holds bags. A basket hangs on a swinging arm to store produce out of the way. Levine jokingly calls himself the “original ecologist,” as many of his creations are from recycled or repurposed materials. People have offered to pay him to build them similar pieces, but the retired carpenter isn’t working for pay anymore. “When I make it,” he says, “it’s a labor of love.” ▲

WHEN Cafe 56 Express in Beachwood’s executive chef Roger Friedman thinks of summer herbs, he circles in on cilantro (the Spanish name for coriander). “I appreciate the green herb’s refreshing, unique flavor profile and its cool citrus overtones,” he says. “Cilantro also marinates well with other ingredients, particularly lemon juice and vinegar.” Friedman’s recipe for marinated flank steak is great for the grill. “This is a simple, delicious recipe for the home cook,” he explains. “Just a little bit of advance preparation will yield a delicious result.” ▲

Lay flank steak out on cutting board. Score the surface of the steak with 1/4” deep knife cuts, about an inch apart, across the grain of the meat. In a medium bowl, mix all other ingredients. Place meat in a onegallon, zip-top bag and pour in marinade. Zip top closed and place in shallow dish, then put in cooler or refrigerate for six hours (the longer the better; overnight is best). Clean grill grates well. Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Place marinated steak on the hot grill. Grill for 4 - 6 minutes then turn 45 degrees for another 4 - 6 minutes to get nice criss-cross grill marks. Turn over and cook an additional 4 - 6 minutes, then check for doneness. After grilling, let meat rest for at least 10 minutes, tented with foil. Lay meat on cutting board and cut strips about an inch apart, against the grain of the steak, with deep angle (bias) cuts.
