The Male Facelift: Reversing the Effects of Time Through Cosmetic Surgery Once sought almost exclusively by women, plastic surgery is now being performed on nearly 1.5 million men across the U.S. annually. While this figure represents a little more than 10% of the total number of cosmetic procedures performed each year, it demonstrates a 300% increase over the number Bahman Guyuron, MD of men seeking cosmetic surgery two decades ago. Like their female counterparts, men begin to notice the signs of aging and sun damage in their faces as early as their mid 30s. The men of Northeast Ohio are no exception. Fortunately, internationally renowned plastic surgeon Dr. Bahman Guyuron, has performed thousands of cosmetic procedures to help men achieve the youthful, rested look they desire and gain more confidence in a competitive job environment. One of the most common cosmetic surgeries among men is a facelift, a procedure that has become increasingly common as men strive to preserve or restore a youthful aesthetic and improve their confidence socially and professionally. A facelift can be successfully performed at any age, but the ideal age for men to purse this option is in their late 30s or early 40s, when the first visible signs of aging begin to manifest. This procedure is ideal for patients who wish to reverse the signs of aging around the mid- and lower-facial areas, which include the cheeks, mouth, jawline and chin. A male facelift performed by a highly-trained surgeon can make an individual look 7-15 years younger. While undergoing this highly effective corrective procedure, many men opt to simultaneously address other issues affecting the eyes, ears and nose. Dr. Guyuron can easily incorporate corrections to these areas into a

traditional facelift without extending the recovery period. The eyes are surrounded by delicate skin, so they are often among the first areas to show the signs of aging. Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, can correct the loose and sagging skin above and below the eye. This procedure can deliver particularly noticeable results because the eyes are the most prominent feature on the face. Otoplasty, or a procedure to cosmetically reshape the ear, is another appealing option for men who have concerns about oversized or protruding ears. The goal of this procedure is to achieve a more balanced look, particularly for men who choose to wear their hair in a short style. Dr. Guyuron performs otoplasty on male patients of all ages, including teens. Another procedure men often request in conjunction with a facelift is rhinoplasty, also known as nose reshaping surgery. This procedure is used to correct irregularities in the appearance of the nose due to injury or genetics. Rhinoplasty allows the surgeon to effectively straighten, shorten or lengthen the nose to achieve a more proportionate look with the patient’s face. Rhinoplasty is also used to correct a deviated septum, a condition that can result in breathing problems and snoring for the patient. The results of facelift surgery are permanent and can make a profound and lasting difference in an individual’s appearance. But surgery does not halt the effects of gravity on the face. In order to combat these forces on an ongoing basis, it is recommended facelift patients follow a comprehensive skin care routine which could include laser treatments and injectables. Used in complement to surgery, these therapies will ensure patients retain a youthful, rejuvenated look for decades. Dr. Bahman Guyuron has nearly four decades of experience in the field of facial plastic surgery for individuals with aesthetic and reconstructive needs. To learn more about these and other options for improving the appearance of the face, contact Zeeba Clinic at 440-461-7999.

FROM THE EDITOR

Enjoy summer in NE Ohio ummer has arrived in Northeast Ohio, though not before one of the soggiest springs in memory. Case in point: We were forced to dodge raindrops during our fashion photo shoot – the first such occurrence for a summer section in my more than five years as Jstyle editor. But with hopes of drying out in mind, we turn our attention to getting outside to enjoy the warm weather. We’ve long tried to replicate that in our summer fashion shoots, whether visiting the beaches of Cleveland’s Edgewater Park, the bars and restaurants along the east bank of The Flats and Cuyahoga River, getting up close to the eponymous falls of Chagrin Falls and even setting sail on Lake Erie from The Shoreby Club in Bratenahl. What those locations all have in common is proximity to Greater Cleveland’s lake and rivers – some of its most treasured natural resources. In this issue, we stick with that theme but take a slightly different approach by holding our fashion shoot in the picturesque woods of Bainbridge Township by way of the Pine Lake Trout Club. With its fishing ponds and cabins, the club offers what feels like the quintessential

peaceful summer retreat. And the forest that surrounds it can inspire the imagination – or spark memories of summers gone by. I trust the club’s charm will shine through as it serves as a backdrop for our featured summer fashions. Also in this issue, our food section has a decidedly summer flavor to it. On one end of the spectrum, we indulge in ice cream by checking in with Pierre’s Ice Cream Company and its president, Shelley Roth, to learn about its new flavors and products – perfect for cooling down on hot summer days – as well as its community connections. On the other end of the spectrum, we nosh on something lighter when we visit with salad aficionados Scott and Jamie Hersch, coowners of Munch in Solon, to ask them about Israeli-inspired salads perfect for backyard gatherings of family and

friends or simply for a quick and easy-to-prepare meal. As for décor, we stop by Brickhaus Partners’ latest development, One Seventeen, a collection of stylish luxury townhomes on Cleveland’s West Side. Among One Seventeen’s many draws is its location. Not only is it in a walkable neighborhood that borders Lakewood, it’s within walking distance of Edgewater Park, which, again, is one of Northeast Ohio’s premier destinations in the summer. If, that is, the rain holds off long enough to get out and take advantage of it and the region’s many other attractions. When it does, I hope you’ll let this issue of Jstyle be your guide to enjoying summer in Northeast Ohio.

aesthetic When the weather warms, Northeast Ohioans head outside. Hitting the beach, taking a dip in the pool, sailing on Lake Erie – all are time-honored summer traditions. So, too, is getting in touch with nature. Pine Lake Trout Club in Bainbridge Township offers a picturesque and peaceful setting to do just that. And, of course, any time spent outdoors with friends and family this summer should be done wearing the season’s hottest fashions.

As a retired R.N., knowing that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime I knew I wanted to make a difference in this world by using my Beautycounter platform. As you start looking into clean beauty (all personal care products made without toxic chemicals) you quickly realize there is very little oversight and manufacturers can put whatever chemicals ( toxic or not) in products and put them on a shelf.

‘All-Star’ options

With the arrival of the All-Star Game to Cleveland’s own Progressive Field on July 9, a local father-son duo is introducing specialized menu items and drinks to their respective culinary and brewery stomping grounds. Julian Bruell, son of chef Zack Bruell and director of service at Collision Bend Brewing Company, will be serving an “All-Star Lager” at the brewery, located along the east bank of the Flats. “It’s a late German lager and brewers love to make beers like that,” says Brewmaster Luke Purcell. “It’s going to be a nice straw-colored brew. It will have those hops notes, but not like American hops that are more citrus-y. This is more earthy and is a nice, complex beer.” As for Zack Bruell, each location in the Zack Bruell Restaurant Group will offer something different for customers to enjoy starting July 6 to the day of the game. Offerings include the futomaki dog at Parallax, the banh mi mini baguette at L’Albatros and cracker jack wings at Cowell & Hubbard.

Katz empire expands

Chef Doug Katz recently announced two new restaurants, one at Van Aken District’s Market Hall in Shaker Heights and another in Cleveland Heights’ Cedar Fairmount neighborhood. The first, an Indian/Thai rice bowl concept named Chutney B, is slated for a summer opening at Van Aken. The menu will include freshly toasted and ground spices blended into a base stew and served on steamed rice with a protein and chutney. The second restaurant, Zhug, is still in the development phase but Katz’s goal is to open in October in Cleveland Heights. The restaurant will serve fire-style small plates. Katz is the owner and executive chef of fire food and drink in Cleveland’s Shaker Square neighborhood. He also leads the Fire Spice Company and is chef partner at the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Provenance and Provenance Café.

Red’s restaurant revamp

Change is on the way for the restaurants that comprise Brad Friedlander’s Red Restaurant Group. The brand’s now-defunct Moxie closed for good April 27 and plans to reopen as a new concept, Blu, the Restaurant. With a more accelerated timetable, this seafood concept aims to open this summer. When it comes to Red, the Steakhouse’s East Side location, construction started this past May at Pinecrest in Orange. The new venue, which will replace the former Beachwood spot, will be more than 7,500 square feet and feature a large dining room, private event spaces and a lounge. Those who like to eat outside can expect rooftop and street-level patios. Lora Brand of Falls Communications, which represents Pinecrest, said Red is slated for a fall 2019 opening.

Summer 2019

After getting their first taste at this summer's All-Star Game, visiting baseball fans will cheer for one of Cleveland’s hometown teams: Pierre’s Ice Cream Company

jstylemagazine.com

A

s thousands of baseball fans gather in Cleveland for the 2019 Major League Baseball All-Star Game this summer, Pierre’s Ice Cream Company. will take center stage. The official ice cream of the Cleveland Indians will be available as Pierre’s Fresh – piped from a soft serve machine that will give fans a taste of the experience of eating ice cream fresh off the line at the Euclid Avenue plant just over two miles from Progressive Field. Hard ice cream will also be an option. In addition, Pierre’s will partner with Destination Cleveland to welcome fans and families to town for the July 9 All-Star Game. Travelers arriving July 5-6 at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport will be treated to free ice cream. Not attending the game? No worries, the 87-year-old company is rolling out plenty of new flavors and products this season, including a line of ice cream sandwiches that goes beyond the traditional vanilla filling. “We actually started at Christmas time, Chanukah time, with a peppermint version,” says Shelley Roth, president of Pierre’s Ice Cream Company. “It was just an in-and-out for the holidays. We’ll have it again this fall. We followed this spring with sea

salt caramel, chocolate and peanut butter.” Roth says customers appreciate having the portion control and convenience of ice cream sandwiches. In fact, Pierre’s vanilla ice cream sandwich is its most popular novelty in Northeast Ohio. “They’re such a convenient, delicious snack – and people want convenience, they want portion control, they want quality,” she says. Each sandwich contains 150 calories. In its Premium, red-carton line of ice creams, Pierre’s is rolling out Mint-Night Snack: half vanilla and half

peppermint ice cream with peppermint sandwich cookies threading through the base. And Pierre’s is expanding its Signature Collection, which Roth describes as its “most indulgent flavors packaged in pints.” Aside from Exquisite Vanilla, “everything is loaded with inclusions,” she says. Think chunks and swirls. The newest flavors are Honey Roasted Peanut Sundae, with honey-roasted peanuts and sea salt caramel swirled into praline ice cream, and French Toast, featuring maple ice cream, walnuts and cinnamon shortbread. “And then we have this one called Peanut Butter Commotion,” which Roth says starts with peanut butter ice cream and is loaded with

chocolate sandwich cookies and fudge chunks. Coconut Almond Fudge Chunk features coconut ice cream and has almonds and fudge chunks. Speaking of coconut, Pierre’s is introducing a coconut sorbet, which – like its entire line of sorbets, including chocolate and mango – is Orthodox Union koshercertified and pareve. In fact, all but one of its 250 products are kosher certified. And while baseball fans from around the country at the All-Star Game who visit Progressive Field won’t see outward signs of that status, Roth says in today’s technologically connected world, it probably won’t take them long to figure out.

As part of its pride in place, Pierre’s has rolled out flavors over the years named for Cleveland institutions: Sundae at the Museum for the Cleveland Museum of Art and Emerald Necklace for Cleveland Metroparks. It also named a flavor for The Ohio State University’s football team: Nuts Over Buckeye. These homages are not just window dressing. They reflect a deep, deliberate and long-held dedication to Cleveland that Roth continues to build upon at the helm of Pierre’s. “Pierre’s Ice Cream has always been located within like one square mile of our current location,” she says. The story begins in 1932, when the Bassett family opened an ice cream shop on Euclid Avenue at East 82nd Street, at that time a thriving area. Roth’s father, Sol, returned from World War II service and began work delivering milk and dairy products. He first purchased Royal Ice Cream Company, which, like Pierre’s, had a small ice cream shop. Later, after the two companies together built a factory on Hough Avenue, he bought out Pierre’s as well. “And so my dad grew it, and it outgrew the Hough Avenue location and moved to Carnegie Avenue,” Roth says. “I came along in ’79 on a full-time basis.” In the early 1990s, as Pierre’s outgrew the Carnegie Avenue factory, the company undertook a master plan, acquired 8 acres on Euclid Avenue and built a distribution center and office with plans for a state-of-the-art factory, which opened in 2011. Pierre’s recycles cardboard and plastic and collects its ice cream waste for a

With that in mind, the team at Pierre’s suggests perfect pairings for warm-weather meals. • Meal: barbecue chicken; Dessert: peach sorbet • Meal: veggie kabobs; Dessert: peach pie with French Vanilla Premium Ice Cream (pictured at right) or coconut sorbet • Meal: hot dogs and hamburgers; Dessert: raspberry sorbet • Meal: eggplant Parmesan; Dessert: Mocha Mud Pie Signature Ultimate Ice Cream, Emerald Necklace Premium Ice Cream or lemon sorbet • Meal: roasted halibut; Dessert: Sea Salt Caramel Toffee Crunch Premium Ice Cream, Black Raspberry Chip Premium Ice Cream or chocolate sorbet biodigester, which turns waste into energy. “We’ve remained in the heart of the city of Cleveland – and at times when this part was not as desirable,” Roth says. “So, I think that’s one major contribution of leadership and commitment that we made a long time ago that’s had an impact.” On the occasion of Sol Roth’s 75th birthday, the company opened a Pierre’s stand at Menorah Park in Beachwood. He had been a board member and supporter. “We know that has brought a lot of joy to residents and their families,” Roth said. Pierre’s has also shown interest in its city in other ways: sponsoring the VIP lounge at the Cleveland International Film Festival, contracting with Vocational Services to do upkeep at its facilities,

donating surplus ice cream to the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, donating ice cream to the Cleveland Police Department’s Let’s Chill Together events and for its Night Out Against Crime and donating ice cream to the Catholic community’s annual one-day FEST.

Where Judaism comes in Roth credits Judaism with imbuing her with a certain vision as a corporate citizen. Born in Cleveland, Roth, 63, graduated from Beachwood High School. She now lives in Shaker Heights and belongs to Park Synagogue in Cleveland Heights and Pepper Pike as well as Celebrating Jewish Life. “It’s hard to put in words,” she says. “Being raised Jewish with certain values, we’re sensitive and concerned to do wherever we can to better our community.”

Her parents, Sol and Harriet Roth, both had an influence. “Both my parents were amazing teachers and also led by example,” she says. “I think there’s just an important message in that. There may not have been a key directive or ‘aha’ moment. I find it’s just do things that, if you can, help out and do something. Do the right thing.” Roth was living in New York City when her father asked her to join the business in 1979. “I wasn’t going to be one of those that came back and complained,” she recalls. “It took awhile, but look at what’s happening now. We have a lot to be proud of in this community.” Baseball enthusiasts agree. A survey of 130,000 MLB fans in 2017, in which baseball stadiums were reviewed on a multitude of metrics, noted Progressive Field got high ranks for ice cream.

“If you’re in Cleveland, the thing to do, apparently, is eat ice cream,” the Voice of the Fan Report stated. “Progressive Field has almost twice the amount of mentions of ice cream as the next stadium. The reason is Pierre’s, a local Cleveland ice cream brand that has been in operation since 1932. The most popular flavor we saw mentioned by name was ‘Moose Tracks,’ so be ready for peanut butter cups in your ice cream.” As for the game, Roth will likely be at the office that day. “Tickets are hard to come by,” she says. “I’ll probably be at work, where you can find me most of the time. So, I’ll have (the game) on the radio or on TV, but (I’m) very excited that it’s here. I love the Cleveland Indians. They’re just awesome. They’re great people to deal with, and it means a lot to our city.” js

ummertime activities in Tel Aviv, including dining, are at times dictated by the daytime heat. When traversing the city and its arid desert air work up Israelis’ appetites, they turn to light bites, like salads filled with fresh market produce. Cleveland’s summer heat is different but eating light and healthy is no less advantageous here during the warmweather months. And salads offer the same benefits – they’re easy to make and won’t slow you down – on the shores of Lake Erie as they do those of the Mediterranean Sea. So, why not eat like an Israeli this summer? One Northeast Ohioan willing to take that approach is Scott Hersch, who along with his wife, Jamie, co-owns Munch, a salad-centric eatery in Solon. He’s traveled to Israel on multiple occasions, and his must-get dish when there is, perhaps not surprisingly, an Israeli salad. “I just loved eating there,” Hersch says. “Last time I went – I’m not a vegan, but I went and I ate vegan the entire trip and it was so easy. That’s a good thing. Menus there, while there are a lot more burgers than there used to be, you can find lots of vegan stuff on every menu.” One of Munch’s regular menu items is a salad Hersch says fits the bill for eating Israeli: “The Falafel,” made with romaine lettuce, Israeli salad, baba ghanoush, tabbouleh and falafel with tahini dressing. Hersch also likes to experiment and offered some non-menu suggestions for salad lovers to try: • A fattoush salad made with romaine lettuce, radishes, English cucumbers, tomatoes, onions and garlic with dressing made of olive oil, lemon juice and sumac. “It’s a Lebanese salad but you find it in Israel as well,” he says. “It has some of the classic (ingredients) you find in Israel.” • A salat yirakot made with tomatoes, green and red peppers, cucumbers, olive oil, red onion, scallions, parsley, mint and dill with dressing made of lemon juice, vinegar, garlic, sumac, salt and pepper. “It’s a little like the Israeli salad we already make, only it’s a little more complicated,” he says.

SECOND SERVING • A Middle Eastern bean salad made with chickpeas, black beans, tomatoes, onions, parsley and mint with dressing made of lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, cumin, salt and pepper. “You really don’t find (black beans) in Israeli cooking, but I think it’s a more Sephardic dish than it is an Ashkenazi dish,” he says. The benefits of salads are many, Hersh says. “For one, they’re super fresh. You’re cutting all the vegetables (and) you’re going to eat them right away. They’re refreshing,” he says. “Even the spices we’re using – the sumac, the mint – make them very refreshing.” There’s beauty in their simplicity, too, whether one is eating on the go, meal prepping for the week or making something that’s both delicious and a feast for the eyes to entertain guests. “There’s not a ton of ingredients, (and) they’re all similar ingredients because they’re just the things they use there (in Israel),” he says. “They’re easy to put together.” Simple though they may be, there’s room for creativity – particularly with dressings. “If you’re going to look these up and make the dressings, for me, I like dressings with only a little bit of oil. These dressing recipes call for lots of oil and very little lemon juice – that’s not how I ended up making them. I reduced the amount of oil,” he says. “Make sure before you marinate (a salad), you like the dressing.” For those making a bean salad, Hersch advises skipping the can if your schedule allows. “You’re better off using, instead of canned beans, dry beans,” he says. “Soak them overnight, refrigerate them and it’ll taste much better.” js

oug Rosenthal drove by his new home every day last fall and winter, itching to move in. But he had to wait until this grudging spring because One Seventeen, the new Brickhaus Partners development at West 117th Street and Lake Avenue in Cleveland, was still under construction. The excitement mounted until Rosenthal moved into his three-story, two-bedroom home in the first week of April. The excitement has not abated. Rosenthal, who is director, mortgage banking for Quicken Loans, left his apartment at Flats at East Bank Apartments in Cleveland for a townhome of about 1,900 square feet. His new home is probably three times the size of his old one, he figures. In addition to wanting more room, he craved a different scene. “I’d been there for three years, and it was time for a change,” he says. “I wanted to buy something, and I wanted a bigger city (and more fully developed urban scene).” One Seventeen, on the eastern edge of Lakewood and a beneficiary of both Cleveland and its densest suburb, called to him. Rosenthal started looking into One Seventeen a little more than a year ago, committing to the purchase last summer. Besides, he knew Andrew Brickman, the “Brick” in Brickhaus. The decision wasn’t hard. “I had known Andrew previously as a developer and we’d talked about other things in the past,” says Rosenthal, adding mutual friends included “people who’d bought from him in the past.”

One Seventeen’s charms Rosenthal looked at a few other developments but says he chose this one because of the “location, the structure, size, amenities … it had a little bit of everything that I was looking for.” The architectural plans and renderings convinced him a One Seventeen home was his destiny long before the move. “I watched it being built step by step,” says Rosenthal, who attends Chabad of Cleveland. “I would drive by, first once a week, then every day.” It wasn’t simply the location that made One Seventeen so desirable, says the 27-year-old. Proximity to downtown and to attractions like the Gordon Square Arts District and Edgewater Park are distinct lures. But the complex is so unusual it is its own destination, he suggests. “I like how tall it is, with the high ceilings, and the structure itself is really

cool,” Rosenthal says. He also likes his large, rooftop deck. “It’s a huge thing with a really nice view, and the structure is very powerful, just very impactful. The presence and the structure just stand out.”

Something different One Seventeen consists of 11 threestory modern brownstones, each with its own entrance, that pay homage to the Fifth Church of Christ that used to occupy the site in the Edgewater neighborhood of Cleveland. As the church used to, One Seventeen boasts classical features, unlike most other Brickhaus developments. Each townhome has a thoroughly finished rooftop deck, along with plaster exteriors, arched windows, French doors, ceilings 10 feet high in the main living area and the bedroom, and balconies. Lucky’s Market, a grocery store specializing in

58

value-priced natural and organic foods, is right behind it on Clifton Boulevard. The townhomes cost in the “high $400,000s,” says Brickman, the developer. They range in size from 1,826 square feet to 2,022 square feet. Only one remained unsold as of the end of May. Brickman likes how the dynamic design of One Seventeen by Scott and Analia Dimit of Dimit Architects contrasts a classical, monumental exterior with an airy, contemporary interior. He also suggests that bringing this project home was challenging, as it involved a national competition. “The city chose us to develop the site after going through a request for proposal (RFP) process,” Brickman says. Brickhaus beat out some 50 other developers, an honor – but also a lot of work. Still, Brickman is pleased.

Most Brickhaus projects are “quite modern,” Brickman says. “I think this mixes the elements of the best modern design with classic design as well as being an homage to the church that was on the site.” The church’s datestone – 1926 – is prominently displayed in front of the complex, and decorative sandstone squares from the church are embedded in the façade fronting on West 117th. “There was a lot of history in that church with the neighborhood, so it’s nice to be able to contribute to it in that way.” Brickhaus Partners is certainly busy. In Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood, it is at the drywall stage of converting the Zion United Church of Christ into 40 apartments. Other Brickhaus projects include Twenty Four Hundred, 12 “modern farm homes” off Richmond Road in Beachwood; 700 Lake, a 27-condominium project that also

includes 13 three-story townhomes in four buildings on the Lake Erie shore in Rocky River with design elements similar to those at One Seventeen; and RiverHaus Chagrin Falls, six riverfront “modern mountain homes” overlooking the Chagrin River next to Whitesburg Park, across from the former Ivex Co. paper mill.

Extending a legacy The Edgewater area was the neighborhood where all the movers and shakers – judges and politicians – used to live when to be a mover and shaker required you to live in Cleveland, says Brickman, noting there are a “lot of milliondollar homes” within walking distance. The market for One Seventeen? “The buyer is anyone from empty nesters to young professionals to a couple young families as well,” says Brickman, acknowledging that One Seventeen is a “luxury product” – and not the priciest in the Brickhaus portfolio. “I think there’s a lot of people who are embracing the modern architecture,” he says. “I don’t think anybody is doing it to the same level of sophistication and finish that we are.” Since Brickhaus Partners began 12 years ago, more modern developments have been popping up in Greater Cleveland, which Brickman says flatters him. He notes that he lives nearby, in 95 Lake, a Brickhaus development at West 95th Street and Lake Avenue. “The fact that I live in one of my own communities, I think, is a testament to the quality of what we’re doing in terms of design and landscaping, in terms of everything.” What’s not to like about One Seventeen? Nothing, according to Lynard Zingale, an Allstate Insurance executive who runs offices in Lakewood, Parma and Euclid. Zingale wanted the vibrancy

of a city larger than Willoughby Hills, the western Lake County suburb where he used to have a large, single-family home. He has downsized, he suggests, but he’s also scaled up and gone contemporary. The color scheme of Zingale’s home at One Seventeen is black, white and shades of gray, with earth tones sprinkled in; stainless steel accents gleam, and the treated wood banisters are calming yet also dramatic. The interior of the insurance executive’s residence feels decidedly more modern than the exterior, a medley of bold architectural gestures that provides heft as an anchor of the

southwest corner of West 117th and Lake. Zingale also has outfitted his home with state-of-the-art sound, kitchen and exercise equipment. Zingale travels a lot, so Uber and Lyft rides to the airport are a natural. He likes the urban feel of his new neighborhood. “It was the ideal location for me,” says Zingale, a buff 45. “A friend, a loan officer from a local bank who knows me, said, ‘I think I have the perfect project for you. They’re building a property at 117th and Lake.” Zingale mentioned it to his Realtor, “(and) my Realtor looked up Brickhaus – that’s all she wrote.” js

CURRENT

KITCHENS Quartz countertops, integrated designs and job-specific ovens are among this year’s kitchen trends By Ed Carroll

T

he kitchen may be the most cherished room of a home. And while today’s updated gadgetry may allow for less time in front of the range than just a few years ago, the form and function of the kitchen remains constant: a space to cook and share meals in informal repast. But kitchens today are not your grandmother’s plain, white kitchens. They

are both stylish and functional, often with technology that wasn’t available as recently as just a few years ago. Experts John Hall, owner of the Hall Design Group in Beachwood and a certified kitchen designer; Elise Masaoka, interior designer at Litt’s Plumbing Kitchen & Bath Gallery in Parma Heights; and Amy Finch, sales designer and architect at Somrak Kitchens in Bedford Heights share

what they are seeing when their customers come to them in search of a new kitchen. “We’re noticing a tendency for something more contemporary, like a slab door versus a shaker-style raised panel,” Finch says. “This year alone, the increase has been incredible. Everybody coming through the door wants the same thing. Going with that style is no crown molding, the cabinets are often

held down from the ceiling a little bit, maybe a foot. ... Now it’s sort of a cleaner, European style.” Losing popularity, Masaoka says, are stained cabinets in which one can see the wood grain through. “Any stained finish is not as popular now,” she says. “People are mainly wanting painted finishes.” Hall says his clients usually come to him with an open mind and few preconceived ideas of what they want, relying on a professional like him to guide them. Clients usually end up with “moodier tones” than kitchens usually had in the past to create more of an atmosphere, he said. “Traditionally, we’ve always gone with white cabinetry,” Hall says. “Then all the sudden, they threw in a gray island and things like that. Now, all the sudden, what’s happening is almost a reversal of that, where they’re starting to do gray kitchens (or) blue kitchens that have white as the accent.” Both Hall and Masaoka say that countertops have moved from the traditional material, granite, to quartz. “Traditionally, countertops, as far as material, granite stone, up until about two years ago, has been about 70% to 80% of my sales,” Hall says. “Now, all the sudden, the stone is probably about 10% of my sales and quartz has taken over.” Masaoka says, in addition to quartz, quartzite has been popular. “Quartz countertops are still very trendy,” she says. “But I’ve been selling, more lately, quartzite countertops, which I think is an upcoming trend and kind of has been for the last year. I particularly like that quartzite countertop. So, they’re natural stone as opposed to quartz, which is partially man-made. ... Quartzite is natural light granite, and I see that coming up a lot more in design.” The design process extends to the appliances, too. Hall, Finch and Masaoka all say customers want an integrated look in their kitchen, including appliances. “We sell appliances,” Finch says. “We tend to sell the higher-end appliances, but that’s also part of the trend – the fully integrated kitchen, where everything looks like cabinetry. So, the refrigerator has cabinet panels on it, the dishwasher has

cabinet panels on it – it’s very streamlined. That also lends itself well to the slab look. It’s very uniform.” Masaoka agreed, explaining that while she wouldn’t consider any specific brands of appliances to be particularly popular, the integrated appliances trend is. “The type of appliances, for instance, refrigerators now, everyone wants a custom, built-in look,” she says. “Refrigerators, we’re basically only selling and suggesting counter depth, so everything is a little more flush (and) nothing is sticking out too far.” Hall says the question he used to ask his customers was whether they wanted one oven or two. Now, there are more options, including both a speed oven and a steam oven. He gave a hypothetical of him going to a football game a half-hour away after work. In his hypothetical, he does not

want to eat out and does not have time to cook a full meal. “If I had a speed oven, I could go home (and) put a baked potato in the speed oven,” Hall says. “By the time I let the dogs out and come back, that potato is done, oven-roasted (and) restaurant quality. I could have leftovers from last night done (or) I can do a chicken breast in probably four or five minutes.” The steam oven, on the other hand, is what Hall says is the “healthiest way of cooking.” “It can do vegetables, pasta, fish – you’ll never have a better cut of fish than out of the steam oven,” he says. “That’s a steam oven. Those are as hot as they come. So, (with) my clients, very seldomly am I putting two ovens in. Basically, I’m putting one main oven in, and then a steam or speed (oven), or all three.” js
