Dr. Robert Rossio, originally from Cleveland, graduated from the University of Toledo with a B.S. in Biology and received his Medical Doctor degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1981. Dr. Rossio continued his training in Toledo, Ohio where he completed his residency program in general surgery. Robert (Reuvain) Dr. Rossio served in the US Air Rossio, MD Force, retiring as Lieutenant Colonel after 20 years of service. During his tenure in the US military, he completed his plastic surgery fellowship at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. Stories behind the celebration
I
f you are a regular reader of Jstyle Weddings, you know our primary focus, not surprisingly, is on the end product – photos and depictions of a day that appears perfect. We attempt to make the wedding planning process not only seem doable – thanks to advice from wedding planners and other vendors you’ll find in our Spring Issue – but provide inspiration for what your wedding could look like. But what’s missing in that idyllic picture is stories behind the day, beyond the celebration and into the couple’s past and future. After all, behind the glamour and excitement is their unique story, and a lot of love, effort and thinking ahead to get to that point. So in this issue, we explore those stories for the first time. Our Wedding Spotlights previously consisted of flawless photos and a list of planning resources that made one couple’s day come together. And they still do, but when you flip to the first

These stories aim to first glean insight into the couples behind the photos. But if you picked up this magazine because you are planning a wedding, I hope this addition helps motivate you to reflect on your own story behind the wedding. Within these pages, you will read the love story of one couple whose relationship came together not over impressive dates, but by saving money and hanging out at home, building an increasingly close partnership and supporting one another through life’s challenges. Another couple describes the sweet lead up to their first date. Two profiles
reflect on how the process of converting to Judaism brought the pair closer together and helped them learn new things about themselves. And as always, in this issue you will learn about the wealth of diverse and skilled vendors in Northeast Ohio – think elaborately layered wedding cakes, photos that capture the day’s essence and venues that offer much more than a pretty setting. We also share this season’s wedding fashions and trending color schemes. All together, I hope this magazine’s contents help relieve some stress around wedding planning and help you get excited about what’s to come. ow did you meet? We met the same way most young Jews meet these days – JSwipe.
What’s an interesting/fun/cute story about getting to know one another? I (Allison) knew I liked Brian before we even met. We had talked a bit on the phone, but when it came time for our first date, I canceled because I was sick. Instead of just rescheduling (which we of course did), he went out of his way to send soup to my apartment. He knew I lived above a deli that I often ate at, and knew the building I lived in, but didn’t know my apartment number. So when he called the deli he just said “I need to send soup to this girl I like, her name is Allie but I don’t know her apartment number.” Luckily they knew the “Allie” he was talking about, and he had food sent up to me. It was very sweet and was the first time I really saw how genuine and thoughtful he was. How long did you know each other before you got married? We were together 2 ½ years when we got married. When did you know you wanted to marry each other? (For Allison) about 10 months in – we had talked about it before we decided to move in together. For Brian, once we were living together and realized how easy it was together, he knew he wanted to take the next step. What was the best part of wedding planning? The donut and cake tasting. Actually, all the food. What was the most difficult part of wedding planning? Planning the wedding wasn’t difficult. We just wanted to be together and with our family and friends. We wanted great music, great food and warm weather. It was perfect.
“The best moment of our wedding was our first dance. We love to sing and it was almost like no one else was there. We just held on to each other and sang our song together. However, technically our first dance was something we call “the wacky inflatable tube man.” We imitate how a wacky inflatable tube man moves, like outside at those auto stores. Before our actual “first dance” song started, there was other music playing and we just ran to the dance floor and made fools of ourselves. It was wonderful and completely us.” - Allison
What spot-on advice did you receive prior to the big day? We were told the day of the wedding to just be present with each other. The day goes by so fast, and there are so many people pulling you in different directions. We were told to make sure we remembered that the day is about us. Don’t be distracted by the small things that are bound to go wrong. Just enjoy each other and celebrate. Were there any conflicts between the two of you or your families in the planning process? Did either of you have to make any sacrifices? We are very lucky. Our families get along very well and everyone just wanted us to be happy on our big day. There was no drama or conflict. What was the most fun or interesting Jewish aspect of your wedding/partnership? When it came to planning our wedding, we knew right away that we wanted to be married by someone who knew us, someone who loves us. So instead of bringing in a rabbi, we asked our friend Wes Lanzola to marry us. He was thrilled and said yes right away. Wes performed our wedding ceremony, and his wife Leora guided our family and friends through our ketubah ceremony. They are our very close friends, so it meant so much to us that they could be such a big part of our day. jstylemagazine.com

I
mpending nuptials can rack the soon-tobe-wed with major decisions, but planning the main event shouldn’t be agony.
To help combat big-day jitters, event designers Heather Thomas of HeatherLily in Cleveland and Pieter Bouterse of Pieter Bouterse Studio in Warrensville Heights offer advice for approaching the ceremony and celebration. “It is really important for a bride to understand and to deduce her own personal style, to not be led by media, family, parents, friends or any other peer pressures, but to just simply express what makes them feel glorious on one of the most important days of their life,” Bouterse says. A couple can honor their budget without compromising on style. The right planner, Bouterse explains, will “create an environment on the day, and weeks and months leading up to it, that is absolutely joyous and devoid of any stress imposed by making turns where one just simply should not go.” When a bride enters Pieter Bouterse Studio, Bouterse’s team first has her describe what she wants to express style-wise on her wedding day. The next step is figuring out how to bring her imagination to life while adhering to a budget. 20

“There are a lot of ways that you can get around to a compromise, if you will, that re-imagines their vision into a style that becomes succinctly their own,” Bouterse says. Brides often run into issues when they become fixated on recreating images they’ve seen online, which can be attributed, to some extent, to the power influencers have over millennials and Gen Zers. Moreover, he says couples “end up compromising each and every step of the way in order to satisfy the illusion that (they) can attain that style of grandeur.” “It is way more important to do whatever you do, however small it is, very well and execute things to perfection, rather than to take on a project that is way larger than your wallet will afford,” Bouterse says. Thomas recommends prioritizing with a “splurge versus

save mentality” in each vendor category, thus establishing where each ranks in terms of spending. She also urges couples not to be nervous about sharing their budget. She often asks couples, on a scale of one to 10, how important their budget is. “If a client writes down a seven,” Thomas explains, “it’s the professional’s job to let the
client know that some of their ideas are going to exceed their budget, then present different options if the budget isn’t flexible or non–negotiable.” Some small details make a big difference, while other things that might seem like a big deal can often be minimized. the decision-making process. For example, if photography is a main priority, budgeting for floral, decor and lighting is a necessity. If entertainment is the priority, their venue should have ample space for a band or deejay; and if food is the focus, they should take a look at their guest count. “It’s truly amazing how 50 less seats on a guest list can add to the overall experience of the day,” Thomas notes. To an extent, however, every area is important when creating a truly unforgettable experience for the couple and their guests. “You want to make sure that all the areas are balanced and not tipping the scales,” Thomas says. “For example, if you intend to have three bridal dress changes with hair and makeup artists on call all evening, but you’re only serving cheese and crackers at the cocktail hour, your guests are going to make that connection of the imbalance.” Planning a wedding in Northeast Ohio’s unpredictable climate also presents its own set of challenges, and according to Bouterse, there’s no foolproof approach when it comes to determining whether one’s wedding should be indoors or outdoors. If a couple can afford it, “having a contingency plan is the key success,” Bouterse says. A backup tent, gazebo or canopy can offer repose in the face of unruly weather. “Ultimately, the vibe of what the bride 22

Pieter Bouterse and the groom wants to impress on their friends is really the style that the wedding then should be,” Bouterse adds. “But you have to have a contingency plan that covers the comfort of those that you invite to your wedding.” To avoid wedding roadblocks, Thomas encourages couples to hire seasoned professionals with impeccable reputations,
especially if it’s the first wedding for one or both families. “This isn’t the time to hire a green vendor, or amateur in training with little experience just because they’re the least expensive,” she says. When someone quotes a low figure for their service, couples should be aware they may be paying for that on the job training, which can be very costly at the end of the day. “It’s not just about money and the bottom line when it comes to weddings,” Thomas says. “It’s about time and decreasing your chances of aggravations by ensuring that you’ve hired the right vendor – now that’s priceless.” js jstylemagazine.com

ooking for ideas inspired by past Northeast Ohio Jewish weddings, as well as Judaica from around the world? You can likely glean insight from a new exhibit at The Temple-Tifereth Israel in Beachwood, which features wedding fashion and keepsakes both from local congregants and Jewish couples as far as the Middle East and Europe, dating to as far as the mid-1800s. “My Beloved is Mine: Jewish Wedding Rituals, Stories and Sacred Objects,” housed in the Temple’s Museum of Jewish Art, Religion and Culture, will have the special items on display through August, rotating in and out different congregants’ wedding items. As part of the exhibit, members chose fabric for a chuppah, placed in the center of the museum. Two wedding dresses are also featured, one from a 1924 wedding at the Temple, and another first worn in 1964 and later redesigned to fit the bride’s three daughters at their subsequent weddings – a story told in a 2008 edition of Jstyle Weddings. The museum holds a range of ketubot from around the world, as well as photo albums and items from congregants’ weddings. Another hallway within the Temple displays congregants’ ketubot and marriage stories. Sue Koletsky, director of the museum, says she wanted to create

a wedding exhibit at the Temple for a long time and was ultimately inspired by the museum’s collection. “We have these beautiful, historic ketubot and I wanted to share them with the congregants and the community,” she says. “Then it just kind of made perfect sense to expand it so we have our stories – our contemporary stories, our memories – as part of this exhibition because part of what I love to do is bring and engage our congregation, the community and traditions. That’s what’s meaningful to us.” Want to hear the stories behind the items? At 2 p.m. Feb. 24, members will tell their wedding stories. Visitors are welcome to bring their own ketubot to share and discuss. What’s an interesting/fun/cute story to share about getting to know one another? Jeff and I met on Jdate, or what I like to call Jewish Tinder. When we met, we didn’t realize that we had crossed paths many times over the years. We both went to The Ohio State University, just two years apart, and we know all of the same people. We even lived in the same apartment building. How long did you know each other before you got married? Jeff and I have been together since 2015. We had lived together for four years prior to getting engaged. When did you know you wanted to marry your partner? Erika: Jeff and I have always connected emotionally and intellectually, especially through our mutual passion for social justice. I had never met a man who cared as much about people as I do, and who had a desire to commit his life to helping others. Jeff loves people. He loves to talk, engage and meet new people, which is something I struggle with. He is an extrovert where I am an introvert, and we constantly push each other outside of our own comfort zones in order to experience life with a new lens. Jeff has the kindest spirit of anyone I have ever met. He just wants to be loved and for people to love and take care of each other. I learned a lot from him about unconditional love and having strength for one another. Jeff: Erika’s empathy, kindness and depth made me certain she was the person I had to spend my life with. I still vividly remember our first dates and thinking, ‘how long will be I be lucky enough to continue seeing this girl for?’ Incredibly, she liked me back and our relationship blossomed. Our time together was never smooth sailing and that only made us become closer as partners. I was working on startup ventures and barely earning any money; Erika encouraged me every step of the way and believed in me more than anyone – so much so that it was almost shocking to me. jstylemagazine.com
For a very long time, I couldn’t afford nice dates or other perks of courtship, but we created our own special world. I am moved to tears now thinking of how much love I felt for Erika watching movies on her pullout couch on Saturday nights. Somehow everything was always OK when we were together regardless of the obstacles life had thrown our way. In those moments, I knew I was going to always be with Erika and that there was no one else who could ever even compare. What was the best part of wedding planning? The most incredible part of our wedding was the ceremony with Cantor Kathy Sebo. Cantor Kathy is one of my parents’ closest friends, and has known me (Erika) since I was born. She really took the time to get to know Jeff, and they immediately connected. Our ceremony was extremely intimate and special. You could feel the love behind every word.

What was the most fun or interesting Jewish aspect of your wedding/ partnership? Jeff and I were raised differently in regard to our religious upbringing, and we have made it a priority to have many interesting conversations about our belief systems, and this came into play majorly during our wedding year. I chose to go to the mikvah the week before the wedding. I was surrounded by the most important and impactful women in my life, and it was so unique and special. I felt more connected to myself and the women around me than I ever have.
What was the most difficult part of wedding planning? The most difficult part of the wedding was the year leading up to it and the immense planning process. Wedding planning can feel like a part-time job. What spot-on advice did you receive prior to the big day? Although white dresses remain the primary choice for brides, some opt for color – usually soft hues like blushes and champagnes, but darker colors, including black, are also making an appearance. However, if you go with white or ivory to keep tradition alive, choose a soft dress made of tulle or lace and grab color through decor and accessories. Bright tablecloths and napkins are a start for your reception. At the ceremony, choose naturally bright flowers like roses or carnations for bouquets and boutonnieres. These touches will bring color to the big day, and more importantly, create an eye-catching and playful aesthetic to look back on.

ow did you meet? Steve and I met while I was waitressing while I was in college at a place called Tinkers Creek Tavern. It was my very last day there before I started a new job, and he was there with his uncle and cousin. Near the end of my shift, he grew up the courage to come up to me and ask me out on a date, and we’ve been inseparable ever since. What’s an interesting/fun/cute story about getting to know one another? We both grew up on the water and are boaters. We love being on the water, especially together. When we first met, I (Alexandra) had mentioned I grew up boating, but it wasn’t until we took his boat out that he realized I could really be his first mate not only out at sea, but on land as well. How long did you know each other before you got married? We knew each other and dated for seven years before we got married. We were always having too much fun to really slow down and plan a wedding. When did you know you wanted to marry your partner? I (Alexandra) knew about a month into dating that he was special and was the one for me. One of our dates was at the African Safari Wildlife Park. I captured a photo of him feeding a giraffe through the sunroof, and every time I see his smile in that photo, it reminds me of the day I fell in love with him. (For Steven), the summer we met, which was one of our favorite and most fun summers, and would set the tone for our future. What was the best part of wedding planning? The best part of wedding planning was getting the opportunity to express our style as a couple and seeing this all come together on our big day. Then being able to share this with our family and friends was the cherry on top.

What was the most difficult part of wedding planning? The most difficult part of wedding planning was balancing life: work, social life, all while planning. We sometimes found it difficult to set aside time, but once we did, we found the idea of throwing a party for our family and friends makes it all worth it. What spot-on advice did you receive prior to the big day? Many people tell you “happy wife, happy life” but someone once told us, “happy spouse, happy house,” and we believe that’s more accurate and what we choose to live by. Were there any conflicts between the two of you or your families in the planning process? Did either of you have to make any sacrifices? Surprisingly, there wasn’t much conflict throughout our planning process, we tried to make the process as relaxed as possible. My (Alexandra’s) mother-in-law helped me plan mostly and Steve was more hands off, which at times could be a bit stressing as it felt like it was all on me. But my mother-in-law stepped in when I needed her most, which ultimately helped strengthen our relationship. What was the most fun or interesting Jewish aspect of your wedding/partnership? The most fun and interesting aspect of our wedding process was reclaiming my (Alexandra’s) Judaism throughout my conversion process. I had not been raised with any religion, but my mother came from a Jewish background, but had not known much about it. After taking a genetic test, I discovered I was 15% Ashkenazi Jewish, which made Steven’s concern to raise our children Jewish an easy decision for me to reclaim my own Judaism and recapture part of my family’s history. The reclaiming process helped bring Steve and I even closer, and we found it to be a lot of fun and exciting for our future and hopefully our children’s future.

How far in advance should skin care rituals begin? Davidov: It needs to be your lifestyle. If you’re not a regimen person and you don’t do anything for your skin type, it needs to be a few months before the wedding, not a few weeks or even a day before. Especially for women, building a routine is key. Everyone has a different skin concern. Some people suffer from acne, others with pigmentation. Certain concerns take time to heal, treat and recover.
How far in advance should skin care rituals begin? Newcomb: Skin rituals and testing out new products should begin eight to 12 months before your event.
When is it too close to the wedding to try something new? Davidov: I definitely don’t recommend trying something a few weeks before the wedding like a chemical peel or cleanser. Skin reacts and weddings are already stressful. You don’t need the extra shock to your skin. What is most important to get right? Davidov: For the makeup to lay smoothly on the skin, you need to take care to cleanse and exfoliate to make skin glow. But, it all depends on the person’s skin. Definitely though, six months prior to the wedding have a consultation with your aesthetician to make a plan for your skin care routine. It all depends on the skin for the makeup to lay nice. You have to take care of the base. Your makeup will only look as good as your skin does. What is a mistake people often make? Davidov: Taking advice from Instagram. It’s a problem right now because I see a lot of people come and we try to fix that Instagram advice. Social media can help, but social media also doesn’t know your skin type. It’s all general and not customized towards you.
When is it too close to the wedding to try something new? Newcomb: You want to try anything new at least one month before the event. That way, if you do experience an adverse reaction, you have time to let the skin settle down and heal. What role does the beard and facial hair play in skin care? Newcomb: Facial hair definitely plays a part in skin care. Beards and facial hair should be shampooed and conditioned with a beard oil daily. Exfoliating the skin around the hair is also helpful for ingrown hairs and bumps. What is important to get right? Newcomb: There are a few steps that should be taken when providing proper skin care. Everyone should cleanse, tone, treat and moisturize in the morning and evening. It is also important to exfoliate one to three times a week. What is a mistake people often make? Newcomb: Not moisturizing enough is a mistake that many people make when it comes to skin care. Even those with oily skin need to moisturize. If the skin is not properly moisturized daily, it will produce more oil to compensate, resulting in breakouts.

By Becky Raspe From the wedding dress to shoes and hair, details add up to tell a cohesive story for a bride’s big day. Kelly Miron, owner of The Powder Room Makeup Oasis & Boutique in Woodmere, says one of the most important parts of a bride’s full wedding plan is her makeup. With that in mind, Miron says there are a few things brides should consider when determining their look. What is your go-to approach to wedding makeup? Miron: It definitely has everything to do with a bride’s overall idea. You want to have a picture of the dress, first and foremost. The dress is going to set the theme of the wedding. Whether that is romantic, traditional or funky, the dress tells you everything. I always ask for pictures of the venue and their wedding party colors. The more information a bride can give me about her day, the better I can create a look and discuss it with her. How can a bride and her team balance a timeless, classic look with today’s trends? Miron: I think you need to be really careful with trends on your wedding day. You can look dated very quickly. I tend to go classic with my brides, but there is no one size fits all. There are some people who have a specific look for all of their clients, but I can’t do the same look on you that I would do on someone else. That is why you do a trial, so the bride can go back and ask for opinions and make sure she is comfortable with that look.

What should a bride tell her makeup artist in advance to make sure the look works? Miron: Complete honesty is key when you are choosing your makeup artist. You are both going to be spending a very long day together. So, you want to make sure this person gets you and knows what you want and are looking for. I do stray away from pictures as reference though, as the best thing to keep in mind is sticking close to who you are as a person. Don’t do anything super drastic. You won’t feel like yourself. How do you balance a look the bride is comfortable in, but also camera ready? Miron: There is a lot of talking off the ledge, so to speak, that I have to do. You have people who aren’t used to wearing makeup, but I have to be able to apply it in a certain way. They say they don’t wear foundation, but I say, ‘this is the day you will and thank me for it later.’ This is what it goes back to – you’ll look at those pictures and think how flawless your skin looked.

Whether it’s up or down, curled or pin straight, you won’t find a bride OK with a look that goes against her vision. In order to achieve the wedding hair of your dreams, Rachel Loveland, designer and member of the bridal coordination team at Lavish Color Salon in Warrensville Heights, offers some advice.

What is your general philosophy for choosing a wedding hair style? Loveland: The ultimate goal for whenever we have a bride come in is always choosing the perfect silhouette. We want to make sure from every angle that she looks and feels the way she imagined she would for her big day, and a big part of that is her hair style. What goes into conceptualizing a hair style? Loveland: When a bride comes in with a specific style goal in mind, that makes it a lot simpler. But, we also have to take into account her natural texture, length, how it sits and how she styles it on a daily basis. If she doesn’t have a goal in mind, the big question we need to ask is what her dress looks like. We want to make sure we have a cohesive look. From there, we talk about whether she wants a full up or a full down, or somewhere in between, and how she typically wears her hair. Comfort is a big thing. There is a lot that goes into it, but it goes back to that perfect version of herself. What is trending right now? Loveland: For the last few years, there has been a lean to the undone style, like more of a bohemian and loose-braided look. But within the last year or so, I’ve seen a shift to classic styling, but with a little bit more going into it. We’ve also seen the big 1940s blowout as well. So, the trends are shifting back to more styled looks. What should brides avoid in terms of their hair to prevent disaster? What can they do in the event there is a problem? Loveland: For the girls who do like a ton of styling, the biggest thing I do before all the brides leave, I have them do the jump test to make sure everything is in place. The jumping mimics the dancing, so if anything is tugging or slipping, we can take care of it right there. We also suggest the bridal party keeps a little bag of bobby pins with them just in case a piece slips or they lose a pin. We also send our brides out the door with little bottles of hair spray. It is anything they need to feel prepared.

ow did you meet? I (Maggie) was working at a restaurant downtown and Steven came in for lunch. He started coming in more frequently after that and asked me out on a date. What’s an interesting/fun/cute story about getting to know one another? A few months before we met, I had purchased a beautiful necklace with a hamsa charm on it. Something about it caught my eye. The salesperson explained to me that it was a symbol of protection and was meant to bring good luck and blessings. On our first date, Steven noticed my necklace and asked me if I was Jewish. At the time I was not and he explained that it was a symbol he knew from his religion and we started discussing it together. Looking back now, I can’t help but smile and think that the hamsa did in fact bring me good luck and my greatest blessing after all. It brought me love. How long did you know each other before you got married? About 5 years. When did you know you wanted to marry your partner? Maggie: I knew early on in our relationship, but I didn’t want him to know that. Steven: Right away, as soon as I got to know her. What was the best part of wedding planning? Picking everything out together and taste testing all of the food.

What was the most difficult part of wedding planning? Staying organized and remembering all the little details. Luckily, we had Kristen Mercurio who was fantastic and made planning a lot easier. What spot-on advice did you receive prior to the big day? To take a step back on our wedding day and realize that everyone is here for us and that the day is about celebrating our love; to be grateful for that and enjoy the moment. Were there any conflicts between the two of you or your families in the planning process? Did either of you have to make any sacrifices? Honestly, our families helped us plan the wedding and it was fun for everyone to be involved. It was a great way for our families to get to know each other. What was the most fun or interesting Jewish aspect of your wedding/partnership? The “Hava Nagila” was so much fun at our wedding. We also really enjoyed the process of me converting to Judaism. We got to expand our faith together and grow as a couple.

lassi a es By Amanda Koehn While in the last couple years, naked-style wedding cakes, or perhaps a unique non-cake dessert, have had their moment at weddings, this year the simple and elegant cake is back. Think designs that highlight texture, colorful flowers and even incorporate natural elements, like plant clippings. The classic cake is back, but with some personalized twists.
Handmade, elaborate layered cakes served by Lucy’s Sweet Surrender For Lucy’s Sweet Surrender owner Michael Feigenbaum, taste comes first. The scratch, Eastern European/European bakery in Shaker Heights boasts cakes with a seemingly impossible number of layers and a focus on fresh ingredients. Feigenbaum says the bakery dates back to a pre-commercialized style of cooking, when there was a focus on seasonal and classic ingredients. He describes a Lucy’s classic, the Dobos torte, a Hungarian seven-layer – or more – cake assembled with chocolate buttercream and glazed with caramelized sugar topping. “There’s really only a few people in Cleveland that even try to make that cake commercially,” he says. For weddings, Feigenbaum says he often gets requests for pastry trays to place on tables prior to the cake cutting. He also advises those thinking about cake options to consider temperature – in warmer summer months, buttercream frostings hold up better than those that melt more easily. However, he says if a customer requests a cassata cake – or one that must be refrigerated – a work-around can include ordering a smaller buttercream cake for photos and display, and having the cassata cake pre-cut and decorated in the refrigerator until serving time. The buttercream cake can also make a good addition to the next morning’s brunch, if it doesn’t get eaten that night. Moreover, Feigenbaum says he doesn’t dabble much in outrageous designs, opting for simple, clean looking and delicious cakes. “Because we are old school, I’m more focused on how it should taste. I make my cakes almost exclusively the same day they are getting served,” he says, adding he will often bake the cake layers a day or two in advance, and save assembling and decorating until the day of. “Usually within two hours of finishing the decorating, I’m leaving to go to the wedding to deliver the cake.”

Colorful, floral seasonal accents lead at White Flower Cake Shoppe Recent wedding cake trends have centered around “naked cakes” – which have no or minimal frosting on the outside – but according to Kelly Holtz, wedding account manager at White Flower Cake
Shoppe, that trend is fading. She says this season, her cake shop, which creates all wedding cakes at its Beachwood shop and also has a Solon location, has seen more simple designs accentuating colors, texture and floral designs. “We are also seeing a lot of gold – that’s one of our biggest requests is adding gold elements, which we can do in a number of ways,” she says. Customers are also seeking modern, clean lines, as well a hint of nature – think succulents and fresh flowers atop the cake. Holtz says early meetings with couples can include drawing inspiration from a photo the customers saw on Pinterest or elsewhere. Or, they may have no idea what want they want – White Flower is accustomed to assisting both types. Tasting comes first, then they will consider colors and consult White Flower’s design book to get ideas about what the couple likes and dislikes, which altogether often lead to the design’s inception.

“I want them to get the style they are looking for, but I also want to make sure it’s something we are going to be able to deliver for them,” Holtz says. A tip? Book early. Holtz says right now, her shop is booking wedding cakes earlier than in the past, with dates filling up into later in the year.
Nothing Bundt Cakes offers unique, efficient option When Dennis Looney first tasted Nothing Bundt Cakes’ desserts, he was hooked. “I took my first bite when Janette introduced me to it 11 years ago, and now we own two stores and are opening a third,” he says, referring to his wife with whom he co-owns shops in South Euclid since September 2019 and Avon since 2017. The co-owners say they’ve seen a trend where wedding parties are moving away from tiered cakes and toward unique options like bundt cakes, and adding an assortment of cupcakes. Janette says it likely has something to do with the ease with which cupcakes – or bundtinis, Nothing Bundt Cakes’ take on cupcakes – can be served, versus the sometimes messy process of cutting a wedding cake and delivering it around. The cakes are certified kosher at the South Euclid location. The Nothing Bundt Cakes business is also efficient – the cakes can be prepared with 24-hour notice. Moreover, the co-owners say there’s something fun and different about choosing their cakes. While customization is limited to options like one of the 10 flavors, the popular drizzle frosting, decorations and size, the quality is guaranteed, Janette says. “One of the best things about having Nothing Bundt Cakes as your wedding cake is when you try it, you know exactly what your cake is going to taste like,” she says. “When you go to a lot of other people who make wedding cakes, you try a few different flavors and then they will make one that you want, and you really never know if what you are going to get is going to taste or look exactly the way you want it.” jstylemagazine.com

The crew at InterContinental Cleveland says they anticipate such diversity in each wedding’s look and feel, knowing from the outset the food will be customized to suit the couple. “I think so many people are becoming foodies these days, and so (they) really want to have an opportunity with the food to kind of highlight different things or have more options, more variety and more show than just simply a sit-down dinner,” says Craig Campbell, area director of sales and marketing at InterContinental. Among other helpful highlights, Campbell says InterContinental ensures the catering manager working with a couple is with them from the beginning to the big day. It also works with other vendors, such as the florist, to make sure everything comes together smoothly. Another notable trend? Late-night snacks via food truck favorites. Terri Kufel, director of sales and catering, says late-night food is among requests – such as creating a specialty cocktail or artistic, special table numbers – she hears frequently from couples looking to express their individuality through their special day. “People are looking to do things that they love, that they want to share with their guests, because it speaks to who the two of them are,” Kufel says. 68

Customization, family style at StoneWater Golf Club At StoneWater Golf Club in Highland Heights, couples can come in with a vision, and StoneWater creates it from scratch. And if the pair doesn’t have such a clear idea at the outset, it’s no problem for general manager Whitney Neidus – she says the team will look at the budget and create a menu that fits both their finances and taste. “They take ownership of it, and it’s fun for them,” she says of wedding clients. Today, Neidus says family style dinners are trending. At StoneWater, that means after the salad course, each table gets everything on the menu. She says the concept is in keeping with couples choosing a less formal setting than others may have in the past. It also takes away pressure on the couple to collect everyone’s entree preference via RSVP card – only dietary restrictions are needed. Neidus says StoneWater has fun with couples who are “foodies” and those willing to let the staff be creative in developing a menu that suits the wedding’s vibe. Another plus of customization is both sides of the new family can likely get what they want. “And they are getting really creative with it,” Neidus says. “So, they might say, ‘OK we want two proteins – my bride really likes fish, the groom really likes steak. And then to bring in some of our culture and family history, we need this pasta.’ So it’s kind of fun – we are bringing family traditions into their menu.”

Let The 9 handle the details The team at The 9 in downtown Cleveland is used to customizing wedding fare based on a couple’s cultures and tastes. And one way they take it further is to match that food with the “whole package,” says Zeina Kleib, senior catering sales manager. Kleib says each bride she’s talked with over the last six months at the hotel has indicated an interest in ”something (where) I don’t have to worry about 18 different people who I’m working with, and 18 different bills and different venues, and getting everybody on the same page.” Think food, venue, beverage, cake, linens and set-up, all handled by the same planner or team. The 9 can work it out so the only outside vendors might be the photographer, DJ and florist. Specifically, as the average age at which people marry shifts upward, and they tend to be in a career-focused mode of life, couples 70

Focusing on food, Kleib says she’s seen a trend toward stations, hors d’oeuvres and a “moving style wedding,” where a long sit-down dinner is eschewed, and food is enjoyed in shifts between dancing, socializing and generally celebrating. The 9 also has a celebrity factor – chef Natalie Blake is a “Hell’s Kitchen” season 9 alum. What’s an interesting/fun/cute story about getting to know one another? After meeting for the first time, Stuart asked Rachel for her contact information. She demurred, saying she would get back to him. Several days later, Stuart received a note through the JDate site that Rachel had Googled him, and found that he was not an “ax murderer.” Stuart quipped back, “How far back did you check?” Another story: (They) had Thanksgiving at a friend’s house. After dinner, Stuart asked everyone around the table to say what they are thankful for. When it was Stuart’s turn, he said he was thankful for friends, food and for having Rachel in his life. He then got down on one knee, ring in hand, and proposed. How long did you know each other before you got married? Almost two years.

After a Shabbat dinner at Rachel’s house, Stuart felt the beauty and warmth of the meal and the hospitality, and was convinced this could be a beautiful way to spend the rest of his life. What was the best part of wedding planning? Meeting with Rabbis (Stephen) Weiss and (Scott) Roland to discuss the wedding contract, the ceremony and the blending of the two families. Designing and creating the chuppah, the ketubah, the aufruf bags and the wedding cake (carrot cake, Stuart’s favorite). Rachel designed and made them all. What was the most difficult part of wedding planning? Finding and purchasing (their) forever together home to move into after the wedding. What spot-on advice did you receive prior to the big day? “At our age, most people told us to have fun and enjoy the magic of our relationship.” What was the most fun or interesting Jewish aspect of your wedding/partnership? “Finding a partner – after the loss of both of our previous spouses – to share life, love and laughter.”

Coughlin: It is important to consider

It’s important to find out who will be at the venue on the day of, and the support they would provide you and the other vendors that are on site for the day of your wedding. What is important to consider at the outset of wedding planning? Coughlin: Find a venue that allows you to be creative and add personal flare throughout the venue itself, whether that is through design, the set up, etc. It’s also important to consider what is included in the fee when you rent a venue. Don’t just look at the price, see what goes into that. (Couples) might get sticker shock from a venue, but they don’t know what is included in the fee.
What do people often overlook? Benninger: Couples often overlook how great views and access to beautiful outdoor spaces can lift the spirits of their attendees. They also tend to forget about the importance of quality sound systems when searching for a wedding venue. What is important to consider at the outset of wedding planning? Benninger: We feel it is very important for couples to check reviews and accolades of the venue before making a decision. Reading others’ experiences is the best and most honest way to discover if a venue is right for you.

What advice do you have for those searching for a venue? Coughlin: For ceremonies specifically, it is very important to have a Plan B, especially in Cleveland. Our primary ceremony spot at CMA is the South Terrace, which is outdoors. It can be pretty unpredictable with the weather. On site, we offer the Plan B within our West Atrium, which still offers that natural light and marble.

What advice do you have for those searching for a venue? Benninger: It is very important for couples to read reviews and visit at least three to four venues before making their decision. Couples should not pre-determine that they

O A O S Bob Bellamy Venue Sales Manager | Severance Hall What does your venue offer that is unique? Bellamy: The space itself is different from nearly any other interior in the Cleveland area. There are similar types of venues but none of them are truly as pristine as Severance and we’ve kept it that way. We also have a very hands-on events team. I can’t say we’re really a wedding planner, but we take care of everything that happens within these four walls. What do people often overlook? Bellamy: It’s the little things, the details that we do that we don’t charge extra for. People just don’t think about how much work goes into off-site weddings and out-of-the-ordinary weddings. We’ve done enough of them that it just happens without you really having to think about it.
What is important to consider at the outset of wedding planning? Bellamy: It might be a bad answer, but it is the entire event from beginning to end. Even the parking and how people get from parking to the event space. Cost is also going to be a factor. We’re certainly not an inexpensive venue, especially if you add in catering. But, we’ve had younger couples on their first wedding or older couples on their third. We have something for everyone. It’s for people looking for something classier. What advice do you have for those searching for a venue? Bellamy: I always tell people that it is their day, so do what makes you happy. Whether it’s the beautiful Severance Hall foyer or the laser tag facility you met at, go somewhere that means something to you. It makes the memories of the day special.

Pay attention to how long (a photographer has) been in business. There are a lot of newer photographers out there, and that’s fine, everyone has to start somewhere, but I think a lot more experience is needed day-of – when problems happen and they have to think quick on their feet and know how to light certain things. Just by having overall general experience, (a photographer) brings a sense of ease to the day, because they’re not worried about what they’re doing. Couples should ask (photographers) if they have backup equipment, what’s the turn around for the pictures (and) what would they be getting per picture because sometimes photographers don’t give high resolution images or they put a watermark (on the photos). Would they get a USB drive with all the high resolution images so they can print them themselves, and make a turnaround in less than a week? What happens if the photographer gets sick and who would fill in for them? Make sure you know what to expect from the photographer by not going off of their Instagram or Facebook page. It’s easy to just post one or two really great pictures from a wedding, and then people think, ‘this photographer is amazing.’ You really need to see how they capture each part of the day, because it’s so different in terms of lighting and that kind of thing. Most of my brides are picking a big vibrant, bold color. And they’re doing a little bit more mix-and-match of their bridesmaids dresses, so you can have a different color palette in your bouquets because the bridesmaids dresses aren’t all matchy-matchy in one color. Other florals trending right now are a lot of spray-painted flowers, dried flowers and bleached flowers. People are also starting to stray away from doing flower arrangements on every table at a venue and making one huge focal piece – maybe it’s in the center of the dance floor, maybe it’s a really cool floral arrangement above a bar, maybe it’s a hanging bridge over a head table. F ORA I think the biggest misconception is that flowers are inexpensive and easy. There is a lot more to wedding flowers than the flowers themselves, so try not to get sticker shock because the cost will include labor and set up as well. All flowers are specially ordered, hand sorted and processed properly to ensure that everything looks beautiful. Florists then create custom, one-of-a-kind designs personally for each wedding. Generally, I think a lot of people are unaware of the amount of time and work that actually goes into designing and setting up wedding flowers – they aren’t just thrown together. Remember, you get what you pay for, so your expectations should be reasonable for the work being provided and quoted. My first piece of advice is to always make sure you have your bridesmaids dresses before finding a florist. It sounds silly, but I’ve seen so many times where brides come in without those dresses, and they pick a completely different color or shade than we had talked about and the whole wedding changes. After that, I would say the best thing is to pick a florist who is going to connect with you. Make sure you trust your florist, and open communication with them is big because they’re working with perishable products. Not everything can come in the way people see it on a magazine or on Pinterest. During the wedding planning process, some brides enthuse over glamorous aspects like buying a gown, picking out flowers and taste testing reception foods and cake. But a truly enjoyable wedding reception doesn’t overlook the importance of entertaining guests. So before hiring your cousin’s coworker’s brother to deejay the event for free booze, consider what Troy Entertainment President Pete Troy and Shari Conn of Marty Conn Entertainment have to say. A good deejay has both talent and experience, Troy says. Referencing what he calls “the Amazon effect,” Troy says nowadays, people tend to go for the quickest and most convenient option. “But this is something that is talent driven or, I should say, is magic,” explains Troy, whose company is based in Strongsville. “It’s intangible. It’s not like it has a serial number or a model or a make.” The best way to ensure you’ll be happy with the entertainment on your big day is to see the performer beforehand, whether it be at an event or in a showroom, such as the one Troy Entertainment has. To guarantee a couple will be happy with their wedding playlist, Troy Entertainment creates an online account, allowing them to login anytime and anywhere. In the account, the couple will see a music request form, a planning form and a timeline to fill out. They can listen to songs and create lists like “must play,”“play if you have time,” and “do not play.” The deejay will also meet with the couple prior to the event to go over specifics. “We talk about who’s going to be there, what they like, what they don’t like, what they’ve seen at other events,” Troy says. “We (also) ask questions in regards to the demographics of their guest list.” 88

If a couple is in search of a live performer, Marty Conn Entertainment works with a variety of regional and national bands from all musical genres. “There’s three stages to a wedding,” Conn explains, listing the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception.
Conn also works with a number of musicians who will write custom ceremony music for a couple’s big day. “(There could be) a four- or five-piece band just for the music for the ceremony,” Conn says. During cocktail hour, she notes, some jstylemagazine.com

couples may want a keyboard player or vocalist, while others might prefer to keep it simple by just playing background music. “Then you have your band – some people want us to start right away,” Conn says. “So it’s very personal, everything’s changing; there’s no right thing and there’s no wrong thing.” Often arriving at the venue hours before the event’s start time to set up lighting, Troy says not only does his company provide uplighting, “there’s ceiling washes and different lighting fixtures.” Other options Troy says set his company apart include a deejay console made to look like a sheet of glass. “It’s like (the movie) ‘Minority Report.’ The audience sees the other side of the screen as the deejay is playing on this large touchscreen,” Troy explains. “They’re seeing how he’s mixing music, and it plays music videos and that type of thing.” Troy Entertainment also boasts a 360-degree photo booth, as well as a robotic photo booth that travels around the room to photograph guests. After tapping on the center screen, guests can choose to take a boomerang – or a short video that loops back and forth – or select “Snapchat-type filters,” Troy says. “It brands it as well and then it sends it right to their phone or their email, whatever they would like to do. It’s very unique. I think I have the only one in Ohio and my partner has a patent on it.” At the end of the day, a couple should choose wedding entertainment that speaks to their hearts. We had a reception that was a mix of Jewish and non-Jewish guests, so it was awesome to see everybody go crazy when the hora started. It felt like a blur, but I was told by many guests that they thought it was the most fun hora that they had ever participated in. It must have been due to the Froimson family. Today, Samantha, 31, and Daniel, 30, live in the German Village neighborhood of Columbus and attend Torat Emet in Bexley, a Columbus suburb, as well as Park Synagogue in Cleveland Heights and Pepper Pike.
