A

recent analysis by a personal-finance website ranked Cleveland as only the 53rd best big city in the country to get married. As you might expect, we here at Jstyle Weddings humbly disagree. To determine and rate the most wedding-friendly destinations, WalletHub compared 182 U.S. cities across 23 indicators of costeffectiveness, convenience and enjoyment. The data set ranges from average wedding cost to venues and event spaces per capita to hotel availability, according to a news release. The top five cities were Orlando, Fla.; Las Vegas; Atlanta; Los Angeles; and Miami. The only Ohio city to crack the top 20 was Cincinnati (No. 19). Other Buckeye State cities to make the list were Columbus (No. 41), Toledo (No. 108) and Akron (No. 124). While we of course can’t dispute the sheer math involved, we can question – with all due respect to the 52 cities that ranked higher – how it scored so relatively poorly.

Cleveland is often considered one of the most “cost-effective” and “convenient” cities in the country, so it’s unclear why it doesn’t rank higher. If it’s a matter of “enjoyment,” well, perhaps those who crunched the numbers need simply to pay our beloved city a visit. That said, it’s worth noting that of the three broad categories the report measured – costs, facilities and services, and activities and attractions – Cleveland got its highest score in facilities and services, which likely comes as no surprise to regular readers of Jstyle Weddings. Comprising that category are the per-capita availability of things like venues and event spaces, party equipment rentals, photo booths, event planners, videographers, photographers, musicians and DJs, makeup

artists, hair salons, bridal shops, florists, hotels, limousine rentals, restaurants and caterers – almost all of which we showcase in Jstyle Weddings. We’ve said it before, and it bears repeating: Northeast Ohio is home to a wealth of talented professionals who make events – from weddings to b’nai mitzvah – memorable and truly special. We’re extremely fortunate in that regard – and we’re pleased to see this report at least acknowledged what the city and region has to offer. While we feel our fine city should be acknowledged for much more than that, we’re also willing to concede that perhaps we should simply savor our fine city’s status as one of the country’s best-kept secrets. Cleveland: It may be No. 53 on this list of best cities to get married, but it’s always No. 1 in our hearts.

The Hottest Topic in Plastic Surgery: Fat Injections for Natural Rejuvenation of the Face

F

or over a decade fat injections, to restore diminished face volume and glow, has been the most talked about topic in plastic surgery meetings. One of the most important signs of facial age is an imbalance of fat – too much of it in the wrong places, and not enough of it where it used to be. Aging skin is characterized by sagging and hollowness, often found around eyes and cheeks, coupled with undesirable fat deposits in places such as jowls and under the chin. Fat Bahman Guyuron, MD injection is now a common plastic surgery procedure that solves one of the problems while fat removal solves the other. Simply put, the procedure involves suctioning fat from one portion of the patient’s body and injecting it into the face to restore lost volume. Fat injections, also called fat transfers, replaces lost facial volume and replenishes the youthful glow to the skin. The secret to the glow is the stem cells found in the body’s own fat. Stem cells possess amazing capabilities that rejuvenate the skin by naturally repairing collagen to re-establish the radiance that is naturally lost over time. From the patient’s point of view, fat injections are a highly desirable procedure because there are no incisions and the surgery is not invasive. While fat injection can be performed under local anesthesia, it is often performed under light general anesthesia or deep sedation. Fat transfer is commonly performed to improve: • Facial creases – laugh lines, smile lines, crow’s feet • Thin lips • Depressions/indentations in the skin • Acne scars • Flat cheeks • Hollowing outside of the chin • Hollowing in the temples • Hollowing above and under the eye

the degree of correction needed. Minute amounts of fat are injected into each tiny space creating a honeycomb effect. Immediately after a fat injection procedure, there may be some swelling and bruising due to the introduction of the fat and fluid used during the procedure. This is normal. The newly placed fat will begin to settle into the area, and the excess fluid will dissipate relieving the swelling. Recovery time is 1-3 weeks depending on the patient. Dr. Guyuron will provide detailed instructions for recovery, including how to care for the donor sites, medications, and potential signs of complications. The bruising can be concealed with makeup. Infection can occur, but it will be rare. The potential for lumpiness is small, which can be corrected. The adverse effects are significantly fewer in experienced hands. Once the fat receives blood supply from the surrounding tissues, it will receive the proper nourishment for survival with a resultant restoration of the volume and pleasing complexion, which is essentially permanent. Fat injection is usually not painful, especially in the injected area. There will some tenderness in the area where fat has been harvested from.

Who are candidates for fat injection? Those who notice hollowing of the upper and the lower eyelids, temples, creases between the lips and cheek, thinning of the lips, mildly receding chin or hollowing on the sides of the chin are good candidates for fat injection. Voted by his peers and patients as one of the best doctors in America, Dr. Bahman Guyuron is a practicing board-certified plastic surgeon with over 38 years of experience and is one of the few plastic surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery who specializes and has limited his practice to the face and neck areas. For an appointment with Dr. Bahman Guyuron, please call 440-461-7999 or visit drbahmanguyuron.com.

A surgeon’s experience is a crucial factor in achieving ideal results with fat injections. Knowing how much fat to inject and exactly where comes with years of study and practice. When it is done properly, the skin will look refreshed with a healthy glimmer and naturally younger appearance.

Procedure Details Fat transfer is routinely performed on an outpatient basis. First, Dr. Guyuron will harvest the donor fat from the pre-determined location where there is unwanted fat. This could be the abdomen, thighs or even the knees. Most patients have enough donor fat, even if they are thin. After he has obtained enough fat, he will process it and prepare it for transfer. This involves cleansing and purifying the fat through a centrifuging process. Then, Dr. Guyuron will inject the purified fat into the treatment area using small needles. The number of injections and amount of fat used depends on

With ideas for floral arrangements or color schemes popping off a screen after a quick search online, some of the mundane but equally important parts of wedding planning may go by the wayside. PLANNING overspend on a wedding,” KhouriBedran advises. Having a goal allows the bride to set a guest list, but once that’s completed, Khouri-Bedran sees some brides make the mistake of changing it. She says this can ultimately harm later plans like budgeting for a photographer or venue. “I think a big thing is the guest count. (Brides) always under allow, so they say, ‘We’re only inviting 200,’ and then they end up having 300 – and that can affect the budget,” she says. Once a budget and guest list are set, it’s time to talk about who is paying for what. While everybody involved is family and wants the wedding to be a success, Zinkan recommends setting defined roles to avoid a conflict down the road. “While the budget is an incredibly important part of the decisions that need to be made, it is a very touchy subject in most families,” she says. “Who pays for what? Traditionally the groom’s parents pay for the rehearsal dinner, the liquor at the reception and the bride’s flowers. The bride’s parents pay for everything else, such as the bride’s gown, food and décor. Recently, we are seeing more couples paying for their own weddings.”

Preparing for trouble A few inevitable hiccups will happen as the big day approaches. Khouri-Bedran and Zinkan have seen brides-to-be panic over problems only to realize – in hindsight – how small the issue was. So, they encourage brides to be ready for anything while taking each issue in stride. Once a couple selects a vendor, Khouri-Bedran recommends they book it instead of putting it on the back burner. She said the sooner

20

Jstyle Weddings 2018

vendors are booked, the couple can start focusing on smaller details of the wedding. “The faster you can book your vendors, the easier your year will be because you’ll have everything done,” she said. Speaking of smaller details, Zinkan says to be aware of details like a tip envelope for vendors or a day-of schedule so as to avoid any last-minute decisions in the days leading up to the wedding. “Start making notes of favorite songs you want played at the wedding as soon as possible,” she says. “So many couples leave it to the very last few days and get stressed out about it.” Stress comes with planning a wedding, so when the RSVPs don’t come in on time as expected, Khouri-Bedran reminds brides to stay calm. Still, she suggests staying ahead of the game on invites by sending them out 12 weeks in advance and requiring RSVPs to be returned three weeks prior to the big day.

Be wary of trends Pinterest can be a useful tool when looking for inspiration but tread carefully as it’s easy to fall down the rabbit hole of beautifully designed and everchanging trends. “(Pinterest) is invaluable to us,” Zinkan says. “While we do not replicate anything because we are a bespoke wedding company, ... we can use the pictures to better understand the bride and groom’s vision.” While every couple’s vision is to have a perfect and successful wedding, that vision can change over time. Though changes are a part of the planning process, too many changes can take away the couple’s personal touch. “Sometimes they come in with a clear-cut choice of what

they want and then their style changes based on the trend,” Khouri-Bedran says. “We focus on making it their wedding rather than what the trend is out there. We focus on who they are as people.” Khouri-Bedran noted couples searching the internet should remember where their wedding

is taking place as not all ideas can be executed the same across different venues. “Everything on Pinterest is beautiful but those are in particular settings,” she says. “You can’t make up an oceanfront wedding and put it in the middle of a backyard in Cleveland. It’s not going to look the same.” jsw

Honeymoon Israel encourages newlywed couples to explore Jewish identity and community in the context of their budding relationship while visiting the Promised Land

By Amanda Koehn

Dr. Dante Roulette grew up Christian but had long considered converting to Judaism. “The biggest thing was finding a religious and spiritual practice that aligned with me more,” says the 41-year-old Shaker Heights native. “I just liked the idea that you are allowed to have a relationship with God that also kind of always questions and evaluates what that relationship is and what that practice means to you.” Ian Lucash grew up in a Conservative Jewish household in New Jersey and moved to Northeast Ohio when he was 19. He’s always kept up with Jewish traditions but acknowledges there have been ups and downs in his level of observance and practice. About five years ago, the two met, hit it off and decided to spend the rest of their lives together. They married on Sept. 19, 2015, and 22

Jstyle Weddings 2018

as a result of their bond, both are living more Jewishly than before. Roulette officially converted to Judaism, and Lucash credits their relationship for living more observantly. Now, nearly every Friday, they make challah and light candles, and they’ve put up a sukkah for Sukkot the past two years. “These are things that I hadn’t done for years,” Lucash says. “So, he stepped up my game.” Despite the clarity of their own beliefs, when the Broadview Heights couple began considering having a child and how they would navigate incorporating Roulette’s nonJewish family into their new family’s traditions, things became a bit more complicated. Thus, when an opportunity arose to visit Israel on a 10-day trip with 19 other Northeast Ohio-based Jewish and interfaith couples grappling with similar questions, they applied.

On Sept. 7, 2017, they embarked on that trip through a national program called Honeymoon Israel. The excursion not only allowed them and the other couples to better understand their Jewish identities, but it encouraged them to explore their family histories, their connection to the Jewish community and their future.

Honeymoon Israel Honeymoon Israel, which launched its first trips in May 2015, provides group, city-based, honeymoon-style trips to Israel for couples looking to explore their connections to Judaism. To launch its Northeast Ohio program, which started in 2017, it partnered with jHUB, a Cleveland Heights-based organization that aims to connect interfaith couples to Jewish life. Nationally, about 70 percent of Honeymoon Israel couples are interfaith. Couples consisting of two people who were jstylemagazine.com

both born Jewish and couples in which one partner converted to Judaism also make the trip. A stipulation to participating in Honeymoon Israel is at least one partner must have never been on another organized trip to Israel as a teen or adult. “What we really are looking for are couples who have yet to make firm decisions of the way that they want to incorporate Judaism into their relationship, family or life,” says Rachel Zieleniec, vice president of marketing and communications at Honeymoon Israel, adding that it’s important Honeymoon Israel trips are reflective of the demographics of the community at large. “It’s important to us that it’s a healthy mix and balance of couples of diverse backgrounds because there is so much we can learn from each other.” The trip aims to incorporate Israeli staples, such as visiting Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and hiking Masada, but also includes visits to Christian sites and Arab-Israeli communities to better educate on diversity, politics and interfaith aspects of the country.

Additionally, Honeymoon Israel aims to be luxurious, including alone time for couples and special romantic components. These elements help differentiate it from other organized trips, like Birthright, which often engage participants in back-to-back adventures, leave little time for sleep and involve scrappily moving around hotels and sites. Samia Mansour, communications and events manager for jHUB, who was on the Northeast Ohio trip along with jHUB’s director, Rabbi Melinda Mersack, says the outing allowed couples to have conversations about their cultures and religions many had not yet addressed in their relationship. “For them to connect with people who are not only at the same stage in life but also have some of the same struggles coming from an interfaith family, or maybe a family where they are not so connected to Jewish life, and to experience Israel together with couples who are similar, was so wonderful,” Mansour says.

Interfaith questions For Lee and Danielle Steinbock, a Shaker Heights couple, Honeymoon Israel came at an ideal time – after the birth of their first child, Lennox, 2, but before further expanding their family. Lee, 33, who was raised Jewish and attended The Temple-Tifereth Israel in Beachwood growing up, felt the trip would provide a good opportunity to engage Danielle, a Lutheran, about Judaism. The couple first met at Panini’s in Cleveland Heights about nine years ago and agree Danielle’s understanding of Judaism has grown significantly since then. They still laugh thinking about one of the first times they hung out, when Danielle baked pizza and left meat ingredients on the side since she was unsure of whether Lee kept kosher. Lee is the grandchild of a Holocaust survivor, and though he says he’s not personally attached to organized religion, cultural Judaism is meaningful to him. Differentiating between religious and cultural Judaism is a concept Danielle grasped gradually.

Lee and Danielle Steinbock

Left: Lee and Danielle Steinbock were married Oct. 6, 2012 in Brewster, Minn., on Danielle’s family farm. Right: The pair visits the Western Wall in Jerusalem.

“It was talked about fairly regularly, mostly because I grew up in an area where I didn’t know anyone who was Jewish,” says Danielle, who works as an operating room nurse at Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights. “It was a lot of curiosity questions for me.” When they were married on Oct. 6, 2012, at Danielle’s parents’ farm in Brewster, Minn., the couple had an interfaith wedding. A pastor and rabbi co-officiated, although finding a rabbi who would co-officiate for an interfaith couple who would not commit to raising children entirely Jewish was a struggle. They ended up flying in a willing rabbi from Albany, N.Y. “It’s pretty safe to guess it was the largest gathering of Jewish people in Brewster’s history,” says Lee, who is a project manager at The Freedonia Group in Mayfield Village. The Steinbocks decided they would educate their children on both families’ religions, and the Honeymoon Israel trip provided a chance to explore their feelings in greater depth with other couples. Danielle says going to Israel with the group helped 24

Jstyle Weddings 2018

her better understand cultural Judaism and provided insight into how couples in the same situation were handling related issues. “It’s nice because we have a resource,” she says. “We don’t just have a temple or pastor or someone to go to, we can go to a friend who’s in a similar situation and say, ‘hey how are you guys doing Easter and Passover?’” For Lee, a favorite trip moment was having dinner with families of Moroccan and Tunisian ethnicities in Beit Shean, Cleveland’s sister city, as well as going to natural springs outside the city. Although he had been to Israel on group trips twice before, seeing the country with his partner provided a new experience. He was especially glad she had the opportunity to gain “an appreciation of what it’s like to be a Christian in a Jewish world, as opposed to a Jew in a Christian world.” The Steinbocks agree the trip wasn’t about trying to convince members of the couples to convert, commit to raising kids in a solely Jewish household, to become more observant or other common stereotypes about group Israel trips.

“Really, 100 percent genuinely, that was not the case,” Lee says. “They really wanted to create this community that I think they were very successful in doing over a very short period of time.”

Traditions and transitions Roulette and Lucash met on Match.com and were married in Hershey, Pa., a location chosen for its proximal convenience for members of both families to attend after the pair got engaged in Hawaii. The small wedding comprised of three guests – Lucash’s brother and his girlfriend, and Roulette’s stepfather – as well as a mayor in a neighboring town as the officiant. Since then, they’ve spent years forming their own traditions, which includes being members of Park Synagogue in Cleveland Heights and Pepper Pike as well as visiting synagogues wherever they travel. Though Roulette and Lucash don’t face the challenge of incorporating multiple religions into their home as the Steinbocks, the trip still came at a critical time in their relationship. jstylemagazine.com

There is something amazing about walking into Israel the first time, kind of coming out of the tunnel and seeing Jerusalem for the first time – Dr. Dante Roulette Just a month after the Honeymoon Israel trip, their family grew when a newborn foster child was placed with them. Should they adopt him, they plan on raising him Jewish. However, having gained perspective by spending time with interfaith couples on the trip, they would also honor both their foster son’s heritage and the religions and heritages of non-Jewish members of their extended family. “Seeing how (the other couples) were doing it in their marriages, reaffirmed how we could do it with our extended families,” Lucash says. Although Lucash, who is a social worker and assistant treatment director at Specialized Alternatives for Families and Youth in Shaker Heights, had visited Israel before on a group trip, he says going to the Western Wall with his spouse was meaningful both for their relationship and because of the familial significance the time held. The visit took place the day after the 15th anniversary of his father’s death, and to commemorate it, he wrote a prayer on a family photo and placed it in the wall. For Roulette, it was meaningful to visit Israel not just as a convert who had never been before, but because his late grandfather visited Israel and had often shared how special the experience was to him with his family. “There is something amazing about walking into Israel the first time, kind of coming out of the tunnel and seeing Jerusalem for the first time,” says Roulette, who is medical director for robotic surgery for Akron-based Summa Health. “On top of that, you get to go with 19 other couples who in some way, shape or form are experiencing the same thing you are, and (you can) have really pointed and meaningful conversations with your spouse or significant other and these other couples. And then you come back home and they are still there and you continue those conversations.”

are planning the second Cleveland trip for early winter in 2019. She adds that in working with the Greater Cleveland community, she’s noticed a trend where at least one partner of a couple has been raised in Northeast Ohio, lived elsewhere much of their early adult life, and then move back to Cleveland once they were ready to raise a family. The area pulls people back at a critical life juncture, she says. “A lot of couples are rooted there – Cleveland, Akron or Ohio in general,” says Zieleniec, a graduate of Beachwood High School and the Joseph & Florence Mandel Jewish Day School in Beachwood. “It’s a great place to raise a family and so there are a lot of benefits to moving back.” However, while such couples may have family around, it can be difficult to start over in terms of making friends when moving to a new place as an adult. Zieleniec says a goal of Honeymoon Israel trips is to ensure people

who have similar stories and backgrounds can navigate faith, culture and lifecycle changes together when they return home. Several events have been hosted by jHUB since the trip concluded, on top of which both the Steinbocks and Lucash and Roulette say they’ve gotten together with the other couples on their own terms. “Jewish Cleveland can be intimidating if you didn’t grow up in that environment, so Danielle and I haven’t been overly active,” Lee Steinbock says. “The trip has really, in my opinion, given us connections to a whole group of people that are in the exact same life situation as us. If we hadn’t gone to the other side of the world with them, we would have never met them.” jsw

Mark your calendar Honeymoon Israel’s next Cleveland trip will be from Jan. 10-20, 2019. Applications will be available for eligible couples from May 1 to June 17, 2018. To sign up to be notified when applications open or to check eligibility, visit honeymoonisrael.org/sign-up.

ROYAL TREATMENT

Royal treatment By Jessica Simon

The traditional wedding is back! With a royal wedding right around the corner (May 19), there is no better time to bring back tradition. Think beautiful and classic when looking for your princess dress. A ball or A-line gown with lace detailing is a good place to start. Whether it is strapless, cap-sleeved or V-neck, a long train, tiara and shimmery drop earring are sure to make you feel like royalty on your big day. Begin planning your fairytale wedding by using natural surroundings flush with greenery. Set the scene using organic centerpieces full of light pinks, soft purples, whites and greens, and fill the space with candles and tea lights to get that moonlit glow. Choose a gown that is light and airy as you walk down the aisle with floral or lace embellishments throughout. Dress up your bridesmaids in floor-length, flowy frocks and floral headpieces to create an ethereal atmosphere.

Tie the knot in a simple, elegant space featuring a few statement pieces for a modern feel. Use white flowers and greenery to keep the décor modest. Match your dress to the contemporary style by selecting a structured gown with minimal embellishments. To complete the look, pick up some simple but shimmery studs or small hoop earrings. BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL

Bold and beautiful By Jessica Simon

Searching for a dramatic look for your wedding? Start with a statement dress and build from there. For a classic look with a twist, try a white dress with a wow factor, like a giant bow, feathers, a fun capelet or black accents. Take it a step further by choosing a colored gown, employing either soft pinks or champagnes. Dress your man up in royal blue or navy tux and your bridesmaids in bright jewel-tone dresses to make your wedding party really pop.

It’s hard to pick a favorite moment from the best day of our lives, but if I had to choose one, it would be the ceremony. We wanted to put our own personal touch on every part of our wedding day and we particularly focused on the ceremony. My best childhood friend, who has grown to be one of Keith’s closest friends, was our officiant and was able to script the entire ceremony around who we are as a couple. He sent us separate questionnaires prior to our wedding day and worked in our answers throughout. It was the perfect blend of serious, emotional and hilarious. We also put other personal touches on our ceremony that made it perfect to us. ... Our ceremony really set the perfect tone for the evening and our lives together! – Alex

Timeless looks By Becky Raspe

Spring and summer brides should embrace a classic and simple makeup look for their big day. According to professionals at Studio MZ and The Powder Room Makeup Oasis & Boutique, both in Woodmere, if you think traditional and timeless – you’ll look back on your big day knowing you looked your best while staying true to yourself. From left: Liquid Minerals Foundation in “Bisque” ; PureMoist lipstick in “Susan”; Smooth Affair Facial Primer and Brightener; and PurePressed Eyeshadow Triple in “Soft Kiss,” all from Studio MZ Jane Iredale

The way we look at it, it should be a classic look. Not overdone but very natural. You don’t want to look like anyone else - just yourself but more enhanced. You don’t want to look back on pictures and see someone that isn’t you. … Classic makeup allows you to transcend time. - Tracy Malone, co-owner, Studio MZ

Makeup is only as good as the skin underneath, so a great skincare regimen is important to look your best on your big day. Your wedding gown leads you to the makeup you’re going to wear - your makeup should match the theme of the dress. … A classic, elegant dress pairs perfectly with a red lip, while a lacy, bohemian dress pairs well with a soft, romantic eye and a noticeable shimmer on the skin. - Kelly Miron, owner, The Powder Room Makeup Oasis & Boutique

HAIR

Texturized techniques By Becky Raspe

When thinking about how to wear one’s hair on the big day, brides should think romantic and flowy, while grooms should consider textured and stylistically messy looks, according to the experts at Lavish Color Salon in Warrensville Heights and Sgro’s Barbershop in Shaker Heights. Some looks just work - and these approaches can help you look your wonderful for your wedding.

Lavish Color Salon Romantic cascading curls in a half up and half down style

Lavish Color Salon High bun updo

The wedding trends for 2018 are bold and structured hair styles for a stand-out look or soft, romantic and natural hair for a beautiful natural look. … Redken’s Iron Shape Thermal Holding Spray and Hot Sets Thermal Setting Mist are used to prep hair before curling or putting any heat on the hair. Windblow Dry Finishing Spray is used as a very soft finishing spray so the hair stays soft, romantic and touchable.

Redken

Regardless of the side length of the hairstyle you choose, the front top of the hair is trending longer to allow for style-ability and texturizing. If you choose a parted style, don’t hesitate to ask for a carved in part or dive into a short, faded look on the sides and or a traditional tapered finish on the back of the hairline. … I am a big fan of putty, gels and paste products. Today, most men don’t care for a shiny or stiff finish so I tend to recommend product lines like Redken Brews for Men. This product line is generally water based and does not dry to a crispy finish.

Satisfying sweets By Alyssa Schmitt

Luna Bakery & Café / Making the Moment Photography

Brides are throwing away the traditional tiered white wedding cake found in their parents’ wedding album and opting for more personalized cakes – or they’re taking completely different approaches to the post-dinner treats they select. Sweets specialists from All City Candy in Richmond Heights and Mentor, Luna Bakery & Café in Cleveland Heights and Wild Flour Bakery in Rocky River are dishing on trendy ideas to end your night on a sweet note.

Texture is the new traditional. I’d say that soft-textured buttercream with fresh flowers in an organic arrangement on the cake is our most requested design. We love it and never get tired of it because every cake ends up taking on its own personality once we put the flowers on at the venue and all of the elements come together. – Annalisa DiGiantonio, lead cake designer and decorator, Luna Bakery & Café

Cake is still very strong for us; that’s our backbone. The trend where each tier of the cake is identical is rare, and we’re seeing a lot of texture, a lot of different patterns, and more color – as well as bolder color. We’re seeing a lot of metallic. Cakes used to be silver, but gold will always outshine everything. – Sue Johansen, owner, Wild Flour Bakery Wild Flour Bakery / EM Event Photography

One of the things we have been hearing constantly from brides is ditch the cake. People aren’t eating cake and they’re not doing cakes. They’re either doing cupcakes or ditching them all together to do an area of sweets — cookies, candy buffets, cake pops and doughnuts. – Elisabeth Sapell, founder and CEO, All City Candy 68

The bride and groom are the stars of every wedding, but caterers provide a strong supporting cast once the reception begins. Good food can enhance a reception and great food can take your celebration to the next level. Experts from the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Cleveland in Cleveland’s University Circle neighborhood, Jim Alesci’s Place in Solon, Dino’s Catering in Beachwood and The Ritz-Carlton, Cleveland in downtown Cleveland share what they hear about catering from happy couples in Northeast Ohio. Whether it’s kosher or not, the expectation is The Ritz-Carlton experience, right? So, what you can expect is a team of very experienced staff members who will take care of your A-to-Z needs. The Ritz-Carlton is known for creating memorable experiences, and this is as good as is it gets. We do not compromise for anything on any part, and quality is what you are going to see 100 percent. – Yael Ron, general manager, The Ritz-Carlton, Cleveland

CATERING I would say at the end of weddings, a lot of times what used to be traditional was there was this sendoff of the bride and the groom; you really don’t see that any more. REHEARSAL DINNERS

Casual celebration By Becky Raspe

As more couples organize their own rehearsal dinners, venues are noticing a shift to casual and communal dinning. Untraditional is the new traditional when it comes to rehearsal dinners, say dining professionals at Granite City Food & Brewery at Legacy Village in Lyndhurst; Play Arcade + Kitchen in Mayfield Heights; The Driftwood Group, which in addition to its catering division oversees Bin 216, Cibreo Italian Kitchen and Hodge’s in downtown Cleveland, Washington Place Bistro & Inn in Cleveland’s Little Italy neighborhood and Welshfield Inn in Burton; and RED Restaurant Group, which oversees Moxie, the Restaurant in Beachwood and Red, the Steakhouse locations in Beachwood and downtown Cleveland.

We cover different culinary genres, whether it’s modern American or Italian and I think we’re versatile in that way. But, even with those spaces, we have private spaces within those restaurants where we can create something from a blank canvas if that’s what we need to do. We’re not one particular style, we’ve got a broad customer base and I think our ability to make a wide variety of people happy is one of our strengths. – Scott Kuhn, founder and CEO, Driftwood Group

FOOD

REHEARSAL DINNERS We have noticed an increased popularity of food stations and appetizers. It gives the clients and guests more flexibility with what food they want and how much they get. We have (a rehearsal dinner) coming up in late 2018 that will be an appetizer-heavy cocktail hour, like a social event, so it’s easier to interact with others. – Darryl Margolis, owner, Play Arcade + Kitchen

I have noticed that people are going from that really formal sit-down type of dinner to the more casual, mingling and heavy appetizer style. One of the reasons we see that is because people want to invite other people like friends and families. – Melissa Myers, director of sales, private dining and catering, RED Restaurant Group RED Restaurant Group

From rustic centerpieces to traditional bouquets, the flowers a couple selects set the mood of their wedding day while their next stage of life blooms in front of them. Floral experts from Lowe’s Greenhouse, Florists and Gift Shop in Bainbridge Township, Joe Mineo Creative in Canfield, HeatherLily Floral & Event Design in downtown Cleveland and Blooms by Plantscaping in Cleveland’s Goodrich-Kirtland Park neighborhood provide insight into what’s trending in weddings. Brides are choosing to be a lot more eclectic in their centerpieces, where they may have two or three different styles of centerpieces at the venue. There’s a lot of greenery with centerpieces, more loose in style, that have some unusual materials in them. We’re seeing people get away from tight, all-floral (designs). – Denise Monsman, floral designer, Lowe’s Greenhouse, Florists and Gift Shop 84

Wedding whereabouts The Cleveland Museum of Natural History

By Ed Carroll

Weddings are special, and even though every day spent with a soon-to-be-spouse should also be special, brides and grooms alike want their wedding to be a singular experience. Fortunately, Northeast Ohio is home to a variety of unique venues that can help ensure one’s big day is one of the biggest – and best – of all. Specialists from B’nai Jeshurun Congregation in Pepper Pike, The Cleveland Museum of Natural History in Cleveland’s University Circle neighborhood, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in downtown Cleveland and The Tangier in Akron share what makes a wedding at their location feel like one of a kind.

I think people are surprised to learn when you do your event at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, you have access to pretty much all the galleries and exhibits on the main level. The event takes place right in the galleries. It’s really kind of cool. – Anne Thompson, manager of group sales and private events, The Cleveland Museum of Natural History The Cleveland Museum of Natural History

“I think it’s nice to stay in one place (when you have your wedding at the synagogue), it’s nice that people don’t have to go from Point A to Point B. I think more convenience than anything else, especially when you’re dealing with people who are coming from out of town. They only have to go to one location and they don’t have to start going to lots of places.” – Paula Botkin, accounting, cemeteries and calendaring, B’nai Jeshurun Congregation

“There’s only one (Rock & Roll Hall of Fame) in the world. Having something like this in Cleveland is obviously a fantastic benefit to everyone from this area. If couples are really looking to entertain a lot of family and friends that maybe are traveling in from different parts of the United States or even the globe, this is a great venue to showcase. Lots of cities have art museums, lots of cities have aquariums (and) lots of cities have similar venues. The prominent wedding bands in Cleveland generally don’t know a lot of Jewish music, which is not to knock them, but I’ve spent 30 years studying Jewish music and I know a lot more than ‘Hatikvah.’ – Bert Stratton, band leader, Funk a Deli (formerly known as Yiddishe Cup Klezmer Band)

By Ed Carroll

Following a joyous yet solemn ceremony that celebrates the love of two people who want to spend the rest of their lives together, many attendees spend the rest of the night in spirited celebration on the reception dance floor. Without proper entertainment, however, things can quickly go south. Entertainment experts from Cleveland Music Group in Valley View, Mike Wojtila in Chardon and Funk a Deli (formerly known as Yiddishe Cup Klezmer Band) in Cleveland Heights discuss what gets wedding guests on the floor to dance the night away.

For (us), we’re about a 50-50 office – half of our brides and grooms look for bands, half look for a DJ. I think it just depends on where their budget falls. Country music is finding its way into weddings more and more, but for an amazing dance party, you have to think past personal taste and more toward what’s popular. It was incredible to celebrate the weekend and wedding with our family and friends, and to bring together people from different parts of our lives and different parts of the world. Everyone had so much energy and the room was so full of love! - Rivka & Aron

Jstyle Weddings 2018

Are you “Wedding Ready”? Weddings are probably the single most photographed events for families, creating pictures that are cherished and viewed decades later. There is nothing more frustrating than spending months toning up, watching your diet and picking out THE perfect outfit, only to look in the mirror a few weeks before the event looking tired and (in your mind) old. The sagging neck, bags under the eyes or love handles, that you meant to do something about, are still there.

The Experience You Trust and The Skill You Deserve.

Now is the time to consider doing something about those problem areas before it’s too late. If you’re considering a face or neck lift, tummy tuck or breast lift, you will need to provide adequate time for recovery, at least a month. Other procedures, such as liposuction, laser treatment of fine lines, or eyelid surgery, won’t require as much recovery time. When planning a cosmetic procedure, people often overlook the time that it takes to get an appointment with a preferred surgeon for a consultation (possibly two) and then to get on the surgeon’s schedule for the procedure. Although you may be ready to have a surgery, there may not be openings in a surgeon’s schedule immediately. As a rule, an experienced, well regarded surgeon, is a busy one and will have their calendar filled many weeks to months in advance. There are occasionally cancellations that can be filled but it’s always better to be safe than sorry and plan-ahead.
