those poor pores by amy newman smith
THIS wasn’t supposed to happen. I thought I’d be discussing skin issues with my daughters when they entered their teens. Instead, my 2-year-old already knows the word “pimple” from pointing to a blemish on my chin and asking, “What’s that, Ima?” Like me, many women discover that leaving their teens behind doesn’t mean saying goodbye to the acne and hormonal breakouts that result when the skin’s natural oil combines with bacteria and other foreign substances. A study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found that 35.2% of women had acne in their 30s, with the number dropping to 26.3% for women in their 40s and 15.3% for women in their 50s.
what’s to blame? Most doctors and scientists point the finger for adult acne at something our bodies can’t do without: hormones. Stress and heredity also increase your risk of being troubled by acne, and both are hard to do much about. But, there are some other factors you may be able to change for the better. For starters, if you find your skin suddenly getting worse after starting a prescription, check with your doctor. Some prescription medicines can be the chief culprit in breakouts. Take a look at your current makeup and skin-care products. Avoid using items that aren’t labeled non-cosmetogenic or nonacnegenic. Bothering your face can also be things you don’t actually put on your face. For example, cutting back on daily hair washing will reduce the amount of oil that comes in contact with the skin. Pat Bilek, director of aesthetics with Mario’s International Spas & Hotels, recommends trying to wash your hands more often. Without realizing it, she notes, women introduce bacteria by leaning their hands against their face. Anything else that touches your face frequently can also cause problems, so clean your home and work phone, as well as your cell phone and glasses on a frequent basis.
turn over a new leaf Jill Gunton, an aesthetician at Beachwood Plastic Surgery & Medical Spa, points out that the key to better skin is keeping the skin cells moving, making sure dead cells are being taken off the top to open up pores and bring newer, moisture filled cells to the surface. Start with a good cleanser, one that is specific to your skin type. Gunton recommends applying the cleanser with a skin-care brush, which can do a better job of removing cosmet22

ics, oil and dirt. Both Bilek of Mario’s and Karmen Endress of Beachwood Plastic Surgery & Medical Spa stress the importance of cleansing your face before you go to bed at night. “It doesn’t matter if you are tired, you have to get your skin clean,” says Bilek. Clean skin is also able to “breathe” and better absorb moisturizer, she says. Endress and Gunton also recommend using a skin-care product that relies on Retin-A or Retinol to speed exfoliation and cell turnover. They caution, however, to take it slowly. Used too much or too often, these products can cause sideeffects such as redness or peeling. Products with salicylic acid and/or benzoyl peroxide — whether from a doctor’s office, spa or store — may also be the ticket, although aestheticians warn to be careful not to over-dry the skin with any of these products.
a little bit more If what you are trying at home isn’t working, spas can offer additional options. Among the most popular is microdermabrasion, which removes the dead skin cells from the skin’s surface (the stratum corneum). Chemical peels — which also cause the exterior layer of the skin to come off to reveal smoother skin below — come in a variety of strengths. Facials are particularly good for extracting both blackheads and whiteheads. Check with the spa or spas you are considering, as they may offer a free consultation before you commit to a procedure. It’s also worth looking at your healthcare insurance; some will cover skin-care products if they are prescribed by a doctor.
sunshine behind the clouds Some spas also offer light therapies that have proven effective in combating breakouts, but don’t fall prey to the myth that ordinary sunlight is a good treatment for acne. While the pigmentation of a light tan may cover the discoloration of blemishes, it’s not worth the wrinkles and other damage caused by sun exposure. Like everyone else, those with blemishes need to apply skincare product with sunscreen — such as a moisturizer, foundation or powder — each and every day. After all, one of the bright sides of having the oily skin that is prone to blemishes is that the extra oil blocking pores and trapping dirt also keeps the skin looking younger and more elastic. I may be on the far side of 30, but while my daughter learned “pimple” from studying my face, she doesn’t yet know the word “wrinkle”! L

snuggly bubele baby by ellen schur brown
DESIGNER Kris Weisblatt grew up Catholic in upstate New York. She didn’t know anyone Jewish. When she married Adam, she grew to love his Jewish traditions and heritage. “I love just being around his family. They’re very closeknit and open with each other,” she says. The warm welcome she received from the Weisblatt mishpochah (family) inspired her to raise her children, Dylan, 5, and Evan, 22 months, Jewish. She liked the easy way his family related to each other, for instance using bubele (sweet baby) as their pet name for, well, everyone. A complicated delivery with Evan caused Weisblatt to see everything in a new light. Recovering herself and caring for a newborn and a toddler wasn’t a comfortable fit with her old business of manufacturing and importing clothing. She found the simplicity of those sleepless days with a newborn – nurse the baby, change a diaper, change baby’s clothes, take a nap, take a walk – pulling her in a new direction. Weisblatt began designing baby clothes for little ones up 24

to size 24 months in simple, bright colors, often in vivid combinations and patterns. The family term of endearment provided the name for her line. Bubele Baby is available at www.bubelebaby.com. What makes her designs so unique? • Bubele onesies have a loop for attaching a pacifier or a toy. What parent hasn’t frantically looked for a lost “sucky thing,” as Weisblatt calls it? “Parents find them years later behind the couch. Now they won’t get lost.” • The Bubele Bib has a soft terrycloth roll around the neck to catch dribbles and keep baby clean and dry. • The swaddling blankets are a soft stretchy knit. Weisblatt found traditional receiving blankets too stiff to tuck in the ends and keep the baby wrapped tightly. It’s also big enough to use as a cover-up for nursing, she adds. • Bubele Baby’s slightly retro color combinations, like chocolate brown and blue; or sage green and vanilla, are a far shout from typical baby pastels. • Moms and dads also will love the prices – $12 to $16 for onesies and “lounge pants.”L

THE first thing Ellen Cohn does upon moving to a new house is hang her wall of family photos. She’s had lots of practice. Ellen, her husband Steve, and their two sons, now grown, have lived in eight different homes in the 29 years the couple has been married. Three years ago, they moved into their current Pepper Pike house, a spacious fieldstone and taupe-sided colonial with multiple rooflines. For the previous four years, they lived in a nearby home that they sold after an unsolicited buyer offered them a price they could not refuse. Prior to that, they resided in Boca Raton, Atlanta and Connecticut. “We look forward to moving,” says Ellen, a Toledo native. “We like the challenge.” “We like change,” echoes Steve, an Orange High School grad whose lifelong friends and family live in the Cleveland area. The Cohns’ secret to retaining their sanity and enjoying every move? French country décor. ¢

Except for their brief foray as newlyweds into contemporary glass, Lucite, and gray hues, every home the Cohns have owned has been decorated throughout in charming, colorful French country. Most of their furniture was purchased in Florida and has worked in every subsequent house “like it was meant to be,” Ellen says. In every home, she reuses and reshuffles all her favorite furnishings, perhaps moving an armoire from the bedroom to the office or a living room end table to an upstairs guest bedroom. “I have a sentimental attachment to my things,” says Ellen. “All are meaningful to me. I don’t like to part with anything. Our home defines who we are.” Their home also reflects Ellen’s love of rich florals and her flair for mixing different patterns. Home handyman Scott Kinsell created a customized basement workshop complete with large overhead lights, high voltage power lines, plumbing, multiple storage units, dust collection system and an area to make wine and beer.
‘socket’ to me
home handymen workshops by arlene fine
FINANCIAL planner Scott Kinsell wishes he could fix the economy as well as he can repair a broken window frame. “I enjoy working with my hands because my progress is tangible,” says the Solon resident. “I talk to my clients all day, and even though I give solid advice, forces beyond my control can affect their financial outcomes.” But he can control the final products he creates or mends in his home workshop. “And I’m not worrying about losing money,” he quips, “just my fingers.” When Kinsell and his wife Lauren designed their home, they divided their spacious basement into three sections. One was his workshop, and the other two areas were dedicated to fam40

ily activities, including a separate play area for the couple’s twin daughters. Although his workshop is never picture-perfect, it is extremely functional. “When I told the builder to install six four-foot overhead lights, he asked me if I was planning to cut diamonds downstairs. But when he saw all my tools and woodworking equipment, my request made sense to him.” Kinsell also had his builder wire the area with high-voltage lines, install plumbing for a large sink, and put in a dust collection system. “Along with repairing, building and painting all sorts of things, I make wine and beer in my workshop,” he explains. “My wife is thrilled that she never sees any of this

mess in the rest of the house.” Some home handymen guard their workshops and don’t like other people working with their tools, notes Kinsell. Not him. “I’m grateful that my relatives and neighbors feel comfortable dropping by and borrowing a tool or asking me to fix something for them,” he says. “And my father-in-law takes all the credit for organizing my workshop. I’d be happy working in a jumbled hodgepodge, but he’s the one putting labels on nail boxes and arranging my tools and supplies on pegboards and shelves.”
... Dentist Dick Cohen might be called a closet home handyman. When he and his wife Judy moved to their Shaker Heights condominium, he consolidated all his tools into a large guest closet. He installed pegboard on the sides of the closet and put in a small workbench. “Although I don’t use my tools very much now, when workmen come to our place and need a special tool, I share one of mine,” says Cohen proudly. Cohen began collecting tools so he could make repairs in his family’s vacation home in Canada. “Out of necessity I became a home handyman,” he admits.
... When Herb Wainer attended high school at Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, his fellow students received merit awards for excellence in subjects like mathematics, French,

English history and Latin. “I was a very good student, but unlike many of my classmates, I loved working with my hands,” relates Wainer. “When the awards were announced, my award was in shop. I had built a boat in woodworking class and was recognized for that accomplishment.” Wainer’s love of woodworking continues to sail along and is reflected in his basement home workshop. The large, inviting space, which is permeated with the smell of freshly sawn and newly planed wood, is a welcome haven for the Moreland Hills resident. Woods of varying colors, textures and shapes fill the shelves along with an assortment of power and hand tools Wainer has collected and customized over the years. There are also sketchpads in Wainer’s workshop filled with drawings. “An essential part of woodworking is the planning and thinking about a project before the actual execution,” he explains. “I have to know ahead of time how I plan to have things fit together and the type of ideal wood for the project.” The fruits of Wainer’s efforts can be seen throughout his home. Stools with inlaid wood, multi-hued coffee tables, decorative Lazy Susans with inlaid designs, and a customized dry bar are among his functional furniture and decorative pieces. His love of woodworking is so … ingrained … in him that Wainer even enjoys drudgery jobs like sanding and planing. “I like to go downstairs before I go to my company (Horizons Inc.), just to sand a board for a few minutes so I can feel and smell the wood beneath my hands,” he says. yukon hybrid: five thousand pounds of quiet ride by douglas j. guth
The 2009 GMC Yukon Hybrid offers a 50% improvement in gas mileage over most SUVs.
THE only way to truly appreciate the 2009 GMC Yukon Hybrid is to drive with the radio off and all the windows rolled up. Just do it, and you’ll experience how eerily quiet this 5,000pound behemoth gets, even at high speeds. The sound of silence and the SUV’s 50% improvement in gas mileage over similar models are the Yukon’s two most noteworthy calling cards. While the solidly built vehicle’s heft takes some getting used to, overall the Yukon offers a friendly (if pricey) ride. The hybrid Yukon’s 21 miles per gallon is, frankly, amazing for a full-sized SUV, as normally drivers would be hard-pressed to get 14 city mpg from one of these two-and-a-half ton beasts. Happily, this excellent fuel economy still comes with a powerful V-8 engine, room for eight passengers, and 6,000 pounds of towing capacity. Helping the environment comes at a price. The front-wheeldrive Yukon hybrid starts at around $52,000, while the fourwheel-drive model begins at $55,000. You should expect to pay about a $10,000 premium for the hybrid technology, which will likely take a few years to recoup in fuel savings alone.

“Hybrid”
The hybrid’s “two-mode” technology starts with a burly 6.0liter V-8, which is coupled with a pair of 60-kW motors packaged within the transmission. Together, they produce 332 hp and 367 lb.-ft. of torque. Similar to other full hybrids, the Yukon can be propelled up to around 25 mph solely under electric power, while the V-8’s cylinder-deactivation system helps reduce fuel consumption at higher speeds. When the electric motor kicks in during braking, the transition from gas to electric is virtually undetectable. Driving the full-sized Yukon does take some work. The vehicle’s mass makes curving around exit ramps or hitting sharp corners a bit of an adventure at first. I also found braking to be tricky initially, as the SUV does not come to an immediate stop even when you forcefully depress the brake pedal. Inside, the Yukon’s leather-wrapped interior is handsome and spacious. It includes a two-tone instrument panel with LEDbacklit instrumentation, chrome trim, and a high center stack for the climate control and audio systems. Its easy-to-use center display screen incorporates animation showing the flow of power through the hybrid drivetrain. If you need a vehicle this large, the Yukon hybrid’s fuel economy; quiet, spacious cabin; and towing capacity make this SUV a solid, environmentally friendly purchase. L Car for review provided courtesy of Jay Pontiac.
