The Season

of Renewal

I

n Cleveland, we know a thing or two about winters. In a literal sense, this past winter was one of the coldest on record, and signs of spring blossomed much later than in recent years. Figuratively, Cleveland has experienced a different kind of winter – one marked not by piles of snow and sub-freezing temperatures but by decades of economic decline. But after every winter comes spring – and the rebirth and renewal associated with the season. A few words from Cleveland is emerging from its economic winter in various Lifestyles Editor ways, some quite noticeable. Visitors to downtown Cleveland have no doubt noticed Michael C. Butz the Flats East Bank project taking shape or the commanding presence of the Global Center for Health Innovation and Cleveland Convention Center. Perhaps they’ve seen increased pedestrian traffic as the residential occupancy rate hovers at about 95 percent. Other signs of renewal aren’t as noticeable but are no less important — and they aren’t just downtown. There’s been a groundswell of entrepreneurs, artists, chefs, brewers, musicians, small-business owners and creative people in recent years. Some are Northeast Ohio natives and some are transplants, but they all see Cleveland as an incubator for their aspirations and are doing much to transform a region better known for its factories and Rust Belt image. Greater Cleveland’s Jewish community is playing an integral role, and in this issue of Jstyle, we talk to several creatives and young professionals – all fashionably dressed, of course – to get their perspective on the change taking place and the community’s involvement in the transformation. We also highlight a variety of up-and-coming businesses symbolic of the region’s reshaping. Of course we shouldn’t lose sight of the fact the city and region still face challenges, income inequality among them. While neighborhoods like Tremont, Ohio City, DetroitShoreway, St. Clair-Superior, North Collinwood and University Circle are experiencing growth, neighborhoods like Fairfax and Hough, as The New York Times recently pointed out, aren’t seeing nearly the same uptick. While factors like that shouldn’t be ignored, they shouldn’t overshadow the renewal taking place and the important work – Anne Bradstreet, poet many are doing to bring about this season of positive change.

I

f we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant; if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome.”

ith progress comes change – and oftentimes issues to confront as a result of that change. In Cleveland’s case, some issues, like its east-west divide, are decades old, while other issues are unique to young professionals – including Jewish young professionals – making their way in the city. Five such Clevelanders – Elana Averbach, Len Gray, Kim Ponsky, Margaret Richards Frankel and Zac Sebo – sat down with Jstyle in the w xyz bar at Aloft Cleveland Downtown to take part in a wide-ranging conversation about such matters. Below are excerpts from that conversation. To read it in full, visit jstylemagazine. com/features. Jstyle: There’s a lot going on in Cleveland right now. A lot of buildings going up, and there’s a lot of development. It’s one thing, though, to see buildings, it’s another to be on the ground level working with people. From your perspective, how would you define and describe what’s happening in Cleveland? Zac Sebo: From a more broad spectrum, not specifically just about the economic development and the projects being built, the one thing I see going on in Cleveland that’s really important is that people are starting to reach out and try to help others – specifically from a business perspective. One of the things that excites me the most about Cleveland is all of the businesses that are starting. If we can get more people to come to Cleveland and stay in Cleveland to start a business, then more buildings will have to be built, more real estate will have to be developed – and that’s going to make a better overall atmosphere in the city and the community as a whole. Margaret Richards Frankel: I think Cleveland is going through a renaissance, and I think the people who are moving here are generally

jstylemagazine.com

happy and enthusiastic about recruiting more people. I think when you see buildings coming up, there is a desire among people who’ve moved back here (or moved here) to recruit friends. We can see that in Cleveland. The residential properties being built in (downtown) Cleveland are at capacity. Buildings are filling up, and that in and of itself is a motivating factor. Kim Ponsky: On that note, I think the feedback people are getting from the new residential buildings is that they’re as sophisticated and desirable to live in as anything in one of the bigger cities. Elana Averbach: I think one interesting tension that’s happening in Cleveland right now, though, is this east-west divide – especially with the young Jewish population. There’s a lot of culture, new opportunities and innovation happening on the West Side, but the Jewish part is still on the East Side. So, I think it’s a big decision – especially as people are starting to settle down, have families and look at Jewish schools. MRF: One thing I like, though, is that there’s no disputing where

downtown is – and that’s one of the greatest points of development going on right now. I think what’s really cool is that when you’re young, you’re professional and you’re not ready to start a family, there’s a desire to live downtown – and that’s what joins the East and West sides. I think, though, for sure when you start a family, people sort of pick a suburb and that can kind of divide culture a little bit. Len Gray: I’m in a little bit different position because everybody else here is from Cleveland. From an outsider’s perspective, my impression is that Cleveland has had a number of these periods in history – in the last 20 years in particular – where there’s been a lot of enthusiasm for what’s going on, but then it kind of doesn’t sustain itself. So, I get the sense that with this most recent one, maybe there’s a little bit of skepticism about whether this is actually coming together, but it actually sort of seems now that people are full-swing buying in. I think that there’s still a huge issue, and I think what you said about the East and West Side is exactly right.

It doesn’t sound like a new thing, it sounds like to an extent it’s getting better now, but it’s a tremendous problem that you’ve got this gulf between Cleveland State (University) and the (Cleveland) Clinic where it’s really hard to get people from the East Side to cross over. I think people are getting better about it, and it’s almost getting to the point where it’s unavoidable – where so much is happening downtown and on the near West Side that it’s dragging people across the gulf because they have no choice but to. Jstyle: Regarding what Len said – that there’s maybe a little less skepticism – do you see that? KP: I hope so. EA: I think that in the ‘90s, it was more top-down and right now it’s a really grassroots effort where you have a lot of people who are entrepreneurs who are coming here and saying, “Hey, there’s a ton of space and I can start a business in it, there’s a lot of opportunities to get attention from media and there’s a lot of people who need jobs who are willing to help and put their talents into recreating the city.” ZS: From an entrepreneur’s perspective, in addition to media resources, my outlook is always on the job and growth opportunities as an individual in the city. One of the things I really like about Cleveland – and why I’ve decided to keep my business

w xyz bar at Aloft Cleveland Downtown

One of downtown Cleveland’s newest hotspots is Aloft Cleveland Downtown’s trendy w xyz bar. The space is flush with interesting designs and art, and outside, a balcony offers views of Lake Erie as well as downtown Cleveland’s western edge. Whether staying the night in one of Aloft’s hotel rooms or visiting w xyz after work for a drink or a bite, visitors are sure to notice a decidedly cosmopolitan vibe. Aloft and w xyz are part of a bigger picture: the Wolstein Group and Fairmount Properties-led Flats East Bank project, which in many ways is symbolic of the transformation happening right now in Cleveland.

CoverStory here instead of trying to make a lot of money really quickly out in Silicon Valley – is because it’s easier, I feel, to get more attention in the city from people in the investment network or incubators and accelerators than it would be in a different area. We need to have a lot more traction and growth to even be considered out there as a legitimate entrepreneurial project, and here, I think one of the reasons it’s attracting people is because it’s a lot easier to work with people right off the bat. MRF: It does feel very grassroots. It feels like the young professionals really want to make a go of it and want to make the city livable and enjoyable for themselves in so many different facets. LG: It’s like you can do anything versus, say, coming from New York, where you might have a great idea but there’s just no way, realistically, unless you’re coming from a huge vault of money, you can do it. In Cleveland, it feels like no matter who you are ... the barriers to entry are just so much lower. MRF: And people are friendly! People want to help make you successful or make things work for you. I feel like it’s a community. Jstyle: What role has the Jewish community played? Has it contributed to your success? Has there been networking involved that’s helped along the way? Or has it not been prevalent? ZS: Networking is key. If you’re an MOT (member of the tribe), you always have people trying to help you get to the next connection. I mean, I can’t

In 2013, Gray decided to move, and after considering six different cities – including Cleveland, which he visited only to get his sister, a Beachwood resident, “off my back,” and Seattle – Gray decided on Cleveland, which he said emerged as the “no-brainer” option. Gray operates inlaw.me out of Bizdom, a Tower City Centerbased start-up incubator founded by Dan Gilbert. Favorite thing about Cleveland: “The amount there is to do here. There’s always something new.” Len Gray wears a shirt by Eton, Jacket by Pal Zileri and denim by Citizens of Humanity from J3 Clothing Company

CoverStory speak specifically on what each individual person who’s Jewish may be contributing to the rebirth and growth of Cleveland, but I do know that we like to stick together and help each other, so that’s something I think is great. There’s always a networking opportunity within the Jewish community – and you should definitely embrace that. It’s really important, and it’s something you instantly have in common, and it’s like an immediate icebreaker. KP: For me, I started my business in D.C., and when I chose two years into my business to move back to Cleveland, which was home, I had the comfort of knowing that I knew enough people in the Jewish community, and that it was a tight enough community, that I had a base for starting my business. It gave me the courage to leave what I’d already established and start from scratch again because I didn’t feel like I would literally be starting from scratch. So, the Jewish community for me was imperative for helping my business get back off the ground, and I think whether it’s yentas or just a close-knit community, it’s huge for small-business growth. LG: Again, just from an outsider’s perspective, everything they’ve said comes from a generation or two of their family living here, but I’ve actually seen the same. My sister has been here for a while, but she’s not from here either, and everybody (still) has been really great. You know, it’s like dating – everybody is trying to figure out who they can set you up with. (Laughter) It’s the same way with business – they

Kim Ponsky 34 | Cleveland Heights Park Synagogue Founder and photographer Kim Ponsky Photography High school photography classes at Hathaway Brown were what first got Ponsky interested in the trade, but she didn’t make it a profession until a stint in law school led her to realize she wanted to pursue creative endeavors. “I had to find a way to do photography but still feel intellectually stimulated and challenged, so starting my own business was the route that allowed me to do both.” That was 10 years ago, and since, Ponsky has enjoyed the creative exposure living in Cleveland has offered her over bigger cities as well as the professional community here. “There’s a strong community of photography small business owners, and even though we’re technically competitors, it’s really a close-knit and cooperative community.” Favorite thing about Cleveland: “How easy it is to live here. The affordability, accessibility and familial community – you just feel like you belong. ... Living in Cleveland doesn’t present the challenges that living in other cities might.” Kim Ponsky wears a jacket by Ark & Co. and denim from Sanity. Necklace from LINGG, bracelets by Alex and Ani and earrings from Israel are her own.

CoverStory want to know what you do and everybody has ideas and suggestions about how they can help. From a small-business perspective, any connection is a good connection at this level. Everybody is very open and willing to do it, and if you figure out somebody you want to meet, it’s very easy to make a phone call or two and have the connection made for you. Which is great because I’ve actually been in other communities where the people who grew up in the community are kind of taken care of and it’s very hard for outsiders to break in. MRF: I don’t know how much the Jewish community has helped me professionally, but as chair of YLD (Jewish Federation of Cleveland’s Young Leadership Division), it’s my philanthropic home. The Jewish community is also why I call Cleveland home, because it makes it feel so much like a cozy, welcoming place. Professionally? Yes, to a degree, but I think it just helps make Cleveland feel more like a community. Jstyle: Whether it’s a community-wide group or through a synagogue, what about young professionals groups? How have they helped? Are they helping? ZS: I’ve only been to one young professional event, and it was The (YLD) Big Event. That event was awesome. I’d like to go to more things like that. I think those are great because taking everything we’ve already talked about in young professionals in Cleveland, you’re getting all of that in one room, in one kind of informal, cool experience. KP: One of the things that was really noticeable to me at

The city of Oberlin’s app is already up and running, and Sebo is currently working with cities like Euclid, Fairlawn, Mentor, Painesville and Strongsville. Favorite thing about Cleveland: “I used to not dig Cleveland when I was growing up.” But that changed in recent years when Sebo started taking advantage of Cleveland’s neighborhood festivals, like Taste of Tremont and the Warehouse District Street Festival, and found he could build community and camaraderie with those he met. “To be so close with people you don’t really even know is one of the coolest characteristics of this city.” Zac Sebo wears a jacket by Z Zegna, linen shirt by Sand, pants by Hiltl and pocket square by Simonnot-Godard from Kilgore Trout

CoverStory The Big Event … I mean, I’ve been on the board with Margaret for a number of years. I go to the Summer Soiree and the other YLD, and you see the usual suspects at all of those – we’ll call them the groupies, right? The Big Event reached beyond that. I ran into people I was very surprised and thrilled to see. What was great is that it reached beyond the people who are already sold. You have the people who are already engaged and involved in the Jewish community, but how do you stop preaching to the choir and get more people involved in seeing the benefits of being a part of the community, and something that’s great about The Big Event is it was a breath of fresh air as far as the type of event and the crowd that was there. Jstyle: Is there an aspect of it being a Jewish event that makes it different than, say, another young professionals group’s event? KP: I think one of the challenges – and this is something we talk about a lot at board meetings – with our age group is we’re so into equality and equal opportunities ... MRF: I think we’re philanthropically minded ... KP: Well, philanthropically minded – but we don’t want to feel involved in something that feels only Jewish. You know what I mean? It’s almost like, “Let’s get Jews to help with the big picture or the city as a whole, not just the Jewish city.” LG: On that note, from what I’ve seen there’s also a healthy bit of skepticism

Elana Averbach 28 | Shaker Heights Founder | KickStartLove Averbach started KickStartLove after moving back home in 2010 and realizing “how difficult it was for singles to meet in Cleveland after school.” In addition to organizing singles events and offering dating coaching, Averbach uses role playing (her background is in acting) to help those with social anxiety practice for real-life situations – which she says guys find particularly helpful when it comes to, say, asking a girl out. Today, business is steady. “It’s great. People who met in 2010, 2011, 2012 are getting engaged and married, and some of them are my friends.” Prior to moving back to Cleveland, Averbach spent time in New York City as well as the Pacific Northwest, and she currently teaches drama as an artist in residence at Suburban Temple-Kol Ami. Favorite thing about Cleveland: “How friendly and sincere people are. ... Also, the innovation coming out of Cleveland is really exciting, as is how many opportunities there are to create new ventures.” Elana Averbach wears a sweetheartneck dress by Ella Moss, vegan leather jacket by Blank NYC, wedge heels by BCBGeneration and handbag from Knuth’s.

CoverStory that anything that is Jewishfocused is focused on the East Side. Even though (The Big Event) was downtown, I get the sense that people feel like if it’s a Jewish event, the focus is not ... ZS: There aren’t too many Jews on the West Side. LG: Even still, right now you see all these articles about the sin tax and they’re about everybody in the outer communities paying their share to help bring Cleveland, the city, up. I think there is skepticism that everything that’s done by a Jewish organization is focused on keeping the Jewish community strong ... KP: … in Beachwood. LG: In Beachwood, in Shaker, in Pepper Pike and those places, and that – to say it harshly – if Cleveland was to burn down, but as long as Beachwood and Shaker were OK, it’d be OK. So, we were talking about equality, it was great that (The Big Event) was downtown, but ... EA: Back to what Kim was saying, one of her points was about how Gen-Xers and Millennials are about embracing diversity. Sometimes it feels almost old-fashioned to do just exclusively Jewish programming. I’m on the board of a group called Cleveland Gives, and it’s backed by NCJW, which of course is a Jewish organization, but we made a conscious choice to get people to do the Jewish values and the mission statement of tikkun olam (repair the world), but we do volunteer events at nonprofits and we say “NCJW” instead of “National Council of Jewish Women” to make it seem

Margaret Richards Frankel 30 | Shaker Heights Dentist | Richards Frankel Dentistry Richards Frankel’s decision to practice family dentistry in Northeast Ohio was intentional. Not only is her father a dentist, but she met her husband, Jonathan, now a resident doctor at University Hospitals, in graduate school at Case Western Reserve University. “We decided we both wanted to stay in Cleveland and pursue our medical careers here,” she said. When not at the office, Richards Frankel serves as board chair for the Jewish Federation of Cleveland’s Young Leadership Division. “It’s my passion. I love helping cultivate other leaders in the Jewish community,” she says. “Our generation wants to be involved with nonprofit work and philanthropy, and I think we’re really the voice of that young Jewish community.” Favorite thing about Cleveland: Its rich culture and history. Margaret Richards Frankel wears a white ruched sheath dress by L’AGENCE, leather sleeve and collar trench coat by Burberry (not pictured) and patent leather handbag by Chanel from Saks Fifth Avenue, Beachwood.

CoverStory really open and welcoming to everyone. KP: I think that’s exactly what I was getting at, and I think that’s one of the hurdles that the Jewish community faces, these stigmas that are affiliated with a Federation event or a Jewish event. I want to be able to bring my friends who aren’t Jewish, I don’t want to say, “Well, tonight I’m in my Jewish life, so you stay over there.” You know what I mean? I think having a Jewish community that is there for everybody who lives in the city and isn’t putting up walls and doesn’t have that feeling to outsiders – we might know that that’s not what’s going on because look at Bellefaire and all these organizations that are thriving because of help from the Jewish community, but I think the outside perception, even from some Jews, is a reluctance to get involved because it’s too “Jew-ey.” I think that’s a terrible misconception. I’m seeing a lot of efforts, especially coming from YLD, to kind of reset the impression people have. Even among members of our community. I have friends who are Jewish, practicing Jews, who have never once accepted one of my invitations to a YLD event because it’s “not their thing.” Well, why not? MRF: I think it’s important to take care of your own so that you can take care of everybody else. I definitely never would’ve seen myself being the spokesperson for the Young Leadership Division, like a Jewish organization, when I was younger. But I look back on my life growing up here, and you take a lot of the Jewish things for granted. Now maybe I want my child to grow up with

24 Jstyle

Spring 2014

those experiences. I want that community to continue to flourish, but I also want the greater community to continue to flourish. I think if people are happy, if our community of Jews is happy, then we have a better capacity to help other people. Jstyle: In terms of people who are from here, do you think the city has turned the corner and that there’s enough momentum to convince them to stay? Likewise, is there enough for an outsider to maybe see what’s happening here and decide to move here? LG: I think it’s at a very crucial point. There’s enough downtown where, like when my sister, who lives in Beachwood and has a 10-year-old and for a decade of living in Cleveland had a very suburban lifestyle, now when they do something and they have an anniversary or it’s somebody’s birthday, they come to Tremont or Ohio City or they go downtown. It’s getting to the point where there’s starting to be, I think, momentum behind going downtown. MRF: I’d say, so what’s behind these buildings? Buildings going up – what does that mean? It means there’s culture developing. I think Cleveland has enough culture now that it does drive people to want to stay or move here. I take people to the (Cleveland Museum of Art). There’s so much more programming there than there was 10 or 15 years ago. People are living and working downtown much more, and that does actually allow for a more exciting weeknight scene – which there wasn’t 10 to 15 years ago. It’s a paradigm shift for Clevelanders. I think we’re

on the cusp of something positive because this culture is continuing to grow. EA: I don’t think we’re at a point yet where people are living in other parts of the country and thinking, “Wow, I should definitely move to Cleveland!” MRF: But we were written up in The New York Times like three times this year. That doesn’t happen. EA: Yes, we’re becoming the “new Brooklyn,” right? Wink, wink. But basically, I think we are a place where – I know a lot of people who’ve moved here for job opportunities at NASA, the (Cleveland) Clinic, the different financial institutions or the universities here, and when they get here, they’re pleasantly surprised by all the things that are happening – and they’re telling their friends. So maybe we will get to a point where we’re a hot destination city, but I think we need to embrace more of what we have here, too. I’m just going to throw this out there, but I think we should have some Superman attractions. Superman is from Cleveland, and by a couple of Jewish kids. MRF: I do think it’d be nice to get people to come back. It’s hard to recruit people from cities to come to Cleveland, but it’s nice to have people be pleasantly surprised when they move back home. KP: I think that’s Cleveland’s new tagline: “Pleasantly surprised.” (Laughter) LG: “Way less shitty than you thought.” (Laughter) MRF: But it is way less shitty than it was 15 or 20 years ago! Looking out (to Phase II of the Flats East Bank project), there’s development happening right outside the window. js

Mingle Jewish singles in Greater Cleveland have a new way to find their beshert By Kristen Mott

S

ome might argue that young Jews all have access to a personal matchmaking service – usually in the form of their bubbe or Aunt Miriam introducing them to a friend of a friend’s son or daughter at shul on a Friday night – but Cleveland-area singles know the dating game isn’t so simple. Those who didn’t fall in love on Birthright likely have sought out alternatives to keep the tribe alive, including online services like JDate or Jcrush – only to discover they’re filled with profiles belonging to those with whom they went to summer camp.

But now, there’s a new local – and anonymous – way to find one’s beshert: Cleveland Yentas, founded in November by Rachel Heiser. The 35-year-old Pepper Pike resident says she’s long had a talent for fixing up Jewish singles, and in fact the idea for starting a matchmaking service came to her 10 years ago. “People have asked me over the years to help fix them up and I figured why not actually give it some effort and formalize the process a little instead of just thinking in my head of people I know who are Jewish and single,” she says. That idea became a reality after Hesier received a micro grant from #MakeItHappen, a Schusterman Initiative that funds ideas by young Jewish professionals to create a vibrant Jewish future. “The main goal is to grow Jewish Cleveland through this service,” she says. “If we can get some people moving back to Cleveland by finding their match here, that would be great. I love Cleveland and I want to see a strong Jewish Cleveland.” Cleveland Yentas is open to any Jew who lives in Cleveland (or wants to

move to Cleveland) and who is single and at least 21 years old. Heiser says her database contains people ranging in age from 22 to 75. After obtaining general information about what a single guy or girl is looking for in a mate and relationship, Heiser gets to know each of them personally through a phone call or in-person meeting. She then meets monthly with a group of women to find potential matches in the service’s database. That group includes Michelle Hirsch, 32, who says Cleveland Yentas is ideal for people who haven’t had luck with dating websites or those who want to remain anonymous. “Everyone thinks that they already know everyone else,” she says. “There are a lot of people who are still hesitant or haven’t had luck with online services. This is an alternative way for people to be under the radar but still be set up by an actual human being – someone who is thinking with their heart and brain to make a good match.” Heiser adds that since the matchmaking service is anonymous it allows people to be more open about what they are looking for in a potential mate. “You can tell me honestly what you’re looking for and

not worry about someone judging you because it’s up on the Internet,” she says. “There’s a better success rate of finding a relationship if you’re honest about what you’re looking for.” Once a potential match is found, Heiser contacts both people to see if they would be interested in going on a date with each other. The two arrange their own date and Heiser then follows up with them to receive feedback. “Sometimes I encourage them to try it again or tell them to move on and focus on a different person. For a lot of people it will take multiple first dates to find the person for them,” says Heiser, a married nonpracticing attorney who’s a full-time mother of three. About 100 singles have filled out a Cleveland Yentas form since the service launched, and in that time, two couples are already in exclusive relationships. Hirsch says she, Heiser and everyone else involved with the service try to tailor matches to each applicant’s wants and needs. “Everyone is just looking for that special someone to make Cleveland his or her home forever,” she says. “The last thing we want is someone to leave Cleveland because they can’t find a mate.” js

First Impressions By Gina Lloyd

F

irst dates can be tricky. Just ask Marisa Saks. The former Shaker Heights resident and matchmaker for Bravo’s reality TV series “The Millionaire Matchmaker” once had a first date in Los Angeles in which the “gentleman” got so drunk that he vomited underneath their dinner table. “I ran out of the restaurant and hailed a cab,” says the

31-year-old Saks. To help Clevelanders get off to a better start than that, Saks offers Jstyle readers first-date fashion advice. “Wear something you feel comfortable in,” she says. “If you have a favorite outfit, wear it.” Women should show their figure but leave some mystery, says Saks, adding too much jewelry could either convey “high maintenance” or lead him to focus less on her and more

on her outfit. “You want him to focus on you,” she says. “Your first impression is key, and you only get one chance.” Men have it a little easier than women, Saks suggests. “Guys don’t have to dress to the extent as women do – they can look good in T-shirts and jeans,” she says. “But both can have it easy, if you let it happen.” js

T-shirt Season

W

ith the weather warming up and baseball season in full swing, Clevelanders will be heading en masse to Progressive Field to have some fun at the ballpark, and in doing so, many will sport their favorite T-shirt, the unofficial uniform of spring and summer. Greater Cleveland is home to several clothing companies, including three that have gained widespread attention for their sports-themed T-shirts: CLE Clothing Co., Fresh Brewed Tees and GV Art + Design. Here, they share their all-star lineups for the Indians’ 2014 season.

W

ith this year’s Tribethemed designs, we wanted to do something vintage and unique. We looked to the history of Cleveland and baseball alike for inspiration and ideas. A lot of the designs are hand-drawn/lettered and worn/ distressed to give that vintage feel. We printed on super-soft heathered tees to complete that effect.” – Mike Kubinski, founder of CLE Clothing Co.

T

he Tribe is classic Cleveland and we wanted to tap into that. Our fans are loyal and have been for years. The 1948 World Champions T-shirt connects fans with the past and the Opening Day T-shirt connects fans with today, but also the tradition that is Opening Day. Opening Day is a holiday and some fans haven’t missed an Opening Day in years. The limited edition T-shirt commemorates that.” – Tony Madalone, founder of Fresh Brewed Tees

very year we try to plan ahead and design a few new shirts and do a launch around Opening Day. We knew we wanted to capitalize on the “Goon Squad” T-shirt from last year. The “Keep the Chief” shirt is new and it got a great response and keeps selling out. We also teamed up with (outfielder) Michael Brantley. He started wearing our shirts under his jersey almost every game last year – it became almost superstitious for him. We teamed up with him to make the “Dr. Smooth” T-shirt since that’s his nickname. We wanted that one to just be a cool, Cleveland Indians shirt.” – Greg Vlosich, co-founder of GV Art + Design

Tribe Time By Kristen Mott

pening Day for the Cleveland Indians has become a tradition in the city, with tens of thousands of fans flocking to Progressive Field each year to witness the start of baseball season. As the city celebrates the 20th anniversary of Progressive Field, and after the Indians’ playoff run last season, Clevelanders are more excited than ever before to watch the Indians compete. “The Indians have been an institution in Cleveland since 1901. The history is there,” says sports-talk radio personality Aaron Goldhammer, who co-hosts “The Really Big Show” on ESPN Cleveland 850 (WKNR-AM) with

32 Jstyle

Spring 2014

Tony Rizzo. “If you’re a Clevelander and you have a lot of family and for generations they’ve lived here, you can almost feel like you’re walking the same path at the ballpark that maybe your dad took or your grandfather took, or even your great-grandfather took. In the beginning of spring it’s like a rite of passage.” Goldhammer, 31, says Opening Day brings back memories of going to the ballpark with his father. Spending a night at the stadium has become a favorite activity for many Clevelanders, especially families. “Baseball is called a national pastime, but it’s a game that’s so much about history and family,” Goldhammer says. “Whereas football is so much about violence and contact and basketball is all about quickness and athleticism, baseball lends itself to a family going and spending time together

and being able to talk to each other between pitches.” An air of excitement surrounds the Indians this year after their playoff run last season. Goldhammer says he had the opportunity to spend several weeks at the Indians’ spring training facility in Arizona as they prepared for the regular season. Between the team’s chemistry and manager Terry Francona’s expertise, Goldhammer says he expects the team to contend for a playoff spot again this year – and possibly go even further. “The Indians have the best clubhouse chemistry of any team I’ve ever covered in Cleveland,” he says. “They get along with each other, they play pranks on each other, they’re comfortable with each other, which is really important. The chemistry is really going to help them this year.”js

anielle Serino insists she isn’t as trendy as fellow native New Yorkers, adding she looked up to her mother, Paula, for style inspiration while growing up. Today, the 47-year-old WOIO-TV 19 Action News anchor/reporter and Suburban TempleKol Ami member describes her style as simple yet classic. “I have about 20 black pencil skirts that I pair with a form-fitting sweater and skinny belt. It’s my uniform.” Serino accessorizes with a gold watch, diamond necklace and stud earrings. For three years, Serino has relied on the style advice of Art McKay, Chanel Beauté Business Manager at Saks Fifth Avenue, Beachwood, who has introduced her to designers like St. John and Alice + Olivia. She trusts McKay with putting her in clothes she’ll love – although it’s not always an inexpensive task. “Every time I receive the bill from Art, I have what I like to call an ‘Art Attack!’ she says, laughing. – Gina Lloyd

loral prints have always been a go-to for spring fashion, but this year the botanical print is inspired by abstract paintings of the Impressionist era. Wear only one piece of the trend at time, and keep everything else minimal. Designers such as Tory Burch, Matthew Williamson, Christian Dior and Rebecca Taylor, to name a few, have showered their collections with the trend. his winter has been one of the harshest in Cleveland history. The cold weather not only affects our emotions (seasonal depression, anyone?) but our skin, hair and nails. The following beauty regimen will help rejuvenate your internal and external body, and will prepare you for a warm and sunny spring. By Gina Lloyd

“City Swept” finishing spray by Bumble and bumble from Dino Palmieri Salon & Spa The newest addition to Bumble and bumble is a great lightweight misting balm for an easy, “street-styled” look that was seen at New York Fashion Week’s spring/summer collections.

Perfume by Dolce & Gabbana from Saks Fifth Avenue, Beachwood. ”Strength Cure” restorative hair masque by Pureology from Lavish Color Salon “Jack Frost” has caused our hair to be dry and brittle. The new restorative mask from Pureology protects and rejuvenates damaged hair.

“Dolce,” the latest perfume by Dolce & Gabanna, is a fresh scent with floral undertones.

Nail polish by Uslu Airlines from La Look Boutique Retire your dark, oxblood nail polish this spring for bright pinks and corals.

Tinted moisturizer by Hourglass from The Powder Room Tinted moisturizers with SPF are much lighter than foundation and will protect your skin from the sun’s UV rays.

“Tan Towel” from Bluemercury If you’re searching for a safe alternative to lying in a tanning bed or sun bathing, look no further. “Tan Towels” are a quick and easy way to obtain glowing skin all year round.

Assortment of cold-pressed juices from Beet Jar Juice Bar During the cold winter months, we are more likely to eat heavy foods, which in turn makes us fatigued and bloated. According to Molly Pamela, co-owner of Beet Jar Juice Bar in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood, “occasional juicing regimens are a good way to rinse your body of toxins and re-energize yourself.”

The

pair Pairing dinners have become increasingly popular around Greater Cleveland By Carlo Wolff

P

airing dinners can be epic. One might suspect that by the time patrons entered their fourth Bruell restaurant of a fiverestaurant night, they had difficulty identifying precisely what they were eating and drinking.

Zach Bruell’s Progressive Wine Dinner in February brought 40 fans of the legendary Cleveland tastemaker to all of his restaurants, starting with Table 45 in the InterContintental Hotel at the Cleveland Clinic and ending at L’Albatros Brasserie in University Circle. By the time they washed down their last morsel, they were ready to go back to the InterContinental, Bruell suggests. The event, which speaks to Bruell’s inner Texan in range and ambition, cost $140 per person. It lasted five-and-a-half hours. Bruell’s restaurants – also including Chinato and Cowell & Hubbard downtown and Parallax in Ohio City – do pairing dinners once a month, rotating among all five, he says. “I’ve been doing these pairing and tasting meals since 1985,” Bruell says in late March, calling from Palm Springs, Calif. “We do a lot of wines by the glass so it’s easy to do a tasting menu with the wines we’re pouring by the glass. Usually, tasting menus are four people or more; they want to pair the wine with the food, and there’s two ways to go about it. You work the food around the wine or you work the wine around the food. It’s up to the customer, really. If you want to do a tasting, we do a tasting.

If there are six people, you need two bottles of wine, but if there are just two, you can’t do bottles of wine, they can do tastes of wine by the glass.” Unlike some other restaurants, Bruell’s pairing dinners come from the bottom up, as it were. They’re designed and promoted within one or another Bruell restaurant, are not to be found on the menu, and are promoted by word of mouth. Consider them semi-private. The case is more public at Bistro 185, a Cleveland restaurant that has been presenting pairing dinners for six or seven years, according to owner Ruth Levine. Bistro 185 plans such dinners three to four months in advance – and promotes them – and already has a local wine

dinner in mind for July or August, peak season for local produce. “There are different kinds of pairings,” Levine says. “Wine comes to everybody’s mind right away. But we’ve also done pairings with Sake and with beer and we’ve done tequila pairings, which is a lot of fun, and we’ve done scotch pairings.” She once “did a vodka pairing, which was fabulous. It was vodka and Russian food together, kind of a Dr. Zhivago feel.” She even presented an Israeli fusion dinner with all-Israeli wine. The flavors of food and drink must complement each other, Levine suggests. That’s why she and her staff will prepare halibut or chicken for a summer white wine dinner, say, along with a “citrusy salad.”

At Washington Place Bistro & Inn in Cleveland’s Little Italy area, general manager Megan LeFebvre works with staff to choose the proper pairings for “Foodie Night Out!” the third Thursday of the month. Washington Place took over the former Baricelli Inn three years ago, and such dinners have become more regular in the past two. Local does well there, says LeFebvre. “People really enjoy the most popular local beer meals,” she says, along with food grown in Greater Cleveland. These dinners feature “maybe not the most common beers people have had.” The March 20 “Foodies Night Out!” offered both beer and wine as complements to dishes including bacon-wrapped smoked scallops and braised

beef short ribs. That adventurous approach seems to go hand-in-hand with the changing seasons, LeFebvre suggests. “People really like to get out and experience things that they’re a little bit unfamiliar with and they’re interested in,” she says. “Especially with the weather changing, people want to get out and about and not be cooped up so much.” js

The sundae’s foundation is built with homemade brownies. “These rich, fudgy brownies are made from scratch using Dutch cocoa, melted chocolate and a lot of butter and eggs. The result is a texture that’s a cross between fudge and a flourless chocolate cake,” he says. “The brownie is topped by scoops of our homemade Bananas Foster ice cream. We use more than 20 bananas just to make a single 2.5-gallon tub of this flavor. The recipe also includes our own kettle-cooked cinnamon-caramel sauce and Myers dark rum. The ice cream is then topped with both homemade hot fudge and caramel sauces, and finished with another brownie piece, whipped cream and a cherry.” Like Sweet Moses, Coquette Patisserie, designed to evoke a Paris café and doing so well it’s had to be staffed twice as heavily as the

Coquette is a few blocks east of the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland and a few blocks farther east of the Cleveland Museum of Art, University Hospitals and Case Western Reserve University. These are spots dedicated to making people smile. “There’s an amazing thing that happens when somebody walks into Coquette or we see somebody at the farmer’s market (in Shaker Square, where Coquette has a stand),” says Shane Culey. “Somebody comes in with a frown or maybe has a bad day – all that changes when they come in the door. he first thing you notice about the Penfield House Frank Lloyd Wright designed is how it hugs the land. The second is its neutrality: brown wood, ochre panels, gray cement block and patio. Because its three roofs are flat, it sits squat, effortlessly and organically binding to the wild, riverfront nature that is its context. At the same time, its length, accented by the carport, gives it sweep and flair. It’s a rakish place. Strong-lined and curvefree, its ruddy wooden beams framing and elongating the horizontal, scored cement blocks that give it power and bulk, Penfield House exemplifies what Wright called Usonian design reflecting America as a land not bound to European architectural tradition. One of only 11 Wright buildings in Ohio, Penfield House is a National Historic Landmark and a magnet for cultural enthusiasts. How it came about is a story in itself. Flattery went a long way with Wright, the imperious American architect known for his timeless modernism. Flattery and a challenge to think outside his tightly controlled box. Those are among the reasons Louis and Pauline Penfield could enlist Wright to design their dream house on part of the 30-acre spread the Penfield family owns along the Chagrin River in Willoughby Hills, according to their son, Paul. Designing the Penfield House in 1953, then building it over the next two years, cost $25,000. At the time, Louis made $5,000 a year; like Louis, Pauline worked as an art teacher, generating some additional income. Wright collected a 10-percent commission on the project,

one of several Midwestern landmarks-to-be he worked on in the early 1950s. These include Fallingwater, a residence near Pittsburgh designed for department store magnate Edgar J. Kaufmann Sr., and the Beth Sholom Congregation in suburban Philadelphia, the only synagogue Wright designed. But the Penfield family has something extra: In addition to owning Penfield House, it owns the plans and site for Riverrock, a house Louis Penfield wanted to build near Penfield House on a bluff overlooking the Chagrin River. Riverrock remains a landmark in waiting. Clearly, Louis Penfield and Frank Lloyd Wright bonded. Louis Penfield had a direct route to Wright through Eugene Masselink, a friend from college days at The Ohio State University during World War II. Masselink was Wright’s private secretary, so when Louis called his old friend Eugene to see whether Wright would build the Penfields a house, no problem. What a house it is. While Paul Penfield and his wife, Donna, no longer live in it, they rent it out at $300 a night (with a two-night minimum) and, Paul says, occupancy runs around 80 percent year-round. Like Fallingwater, Penfield

House looks as if it sprang from the earth, and the 12-foot-tall living room windows seem to invite the forest in. Penfield House feels rangy, befitting a home where the living room runs 25 feet. The words that come to mind when you walk inside are “thin” and “tall,” reflecting its original owner, who helped build and then maintained it. Another is the word “comfortable,” like the living room’s long banquette, low tables and vintage butterfly chair. While it’s a National Historic Landmark, Penfield House was – and still is – ahead of its time. You’d think all that glass would make it particularly vulnerable to the wild temperature swings the area is known for. But no. Pad in your stocking feet over to the heating grate where the kitchen meets the living room and it’s “as

52 Jstyle

Spring 2014

warm as a beach in Cancun,” as Paul says. Radiant tubing runs through the floor tiles, and during the summer, portable air conditioners do the reverse trick. Protecting the furniture – some vintage, all classic modernist – and the select wall art is ultraviolet film manufactured by Suntrol Co. of Cleveland. How idiosyncratic the house is shows on the staircase leading to the second floor: It’s 22 inches wide, with treads 17 inches deep. It was clearly built for the man of the house, and the exterior windows that flank it are as tall as he was. Louis Penfield had big feet and stood 6 feet 8 inches. Paul Penfield grew up in Penfield House and spent the last three decades living in it and keeping it up; the biggest hassle is keeping the roofs clean. “It was a very, very artistic household,” he says. It’s a very artistic house. js
