Musings and observations from Editor Michael C. Butz

Enjoying Summer Along the Lake O ne of my favorite parts of summer is taking advantage of Greater Cleveland’s access to Lake Erie. Sure, it’s sometimes argued that Northeast Ohio as a region doesn’t fully exploit its lakefront geography due to its relative lack of development – and there’s a strong case to be made for that. However, while I’d like to see more, I don’t let that prevent me from enjoying the amenities and access already – and readily – available. I live a stone’s throw from Cleveland’s Edgewater Park, and over the course of the summer, I’ll walk there several times to join others taking in a majestic sunset or join friends for a picnic and game of Frisbee or volleyball. There’s also plenty of activity on the water, whether it’s sailors competing in a weekend regatta or people zipping around on their personal watercrafts.

Jstyle Summer 2014

So, when it came time to plan the summer Jstyle, including Lake Erie – arguably Cleveland’s most fashionable summer accessory – seemed like a natural fit. To accomplish that, Jstyle headed to the Shoreby Club, a lakefront mansion and boat dock in Bratenahl that’s a model of style and elegance, and out onto Lake Erie by way of a 32-foot Chaparral to showcase looks that work both poolside and along the coastline. To go along with those summer styles, we also offer beauty tips for women and grooming tips for men – because there is more than just clothes to looking good while soaking up the sun. Jstyle has those more interested in what’s happening further inland covered, too. In this issue, we touch on delicious summer food and drink (and enjoying both on a favorite patio); a new development that’s redefining downtown Cleveland’s residential landscape; and three young professionals growing a sense of Jewish community in Cleveland Heights. Regardless of your warm-weather preferences, there’s no shortage of summer fun to be had in Cleveland. I hope you’ll join me in taking full advantage of it all.

Star-Spangled Spectacular July 2 | Public Square

The world-renowned Cleveland Orchestra returns to downtown Cleveland for its 25th annual free community concert in celebration of Independence Day – complete with food trucks and fireworks (weather permitting). The concert will feature popular patriotic works as well as John Williams’ “Superman March” (in recognition of the superhero’s Cleveland roots) and Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture.

Jerry Seinfeld

Summer in the City Concert Series

July 18 | State Theatre

July 16, July 23, Aug. 13, Aug. 27 | Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum

His extremely popular sitcom has been off the air for 16 years now, but Jerry Seinfeld continues to bring about laughs with his stand-up act – an act he’s bringing back to Cleveland. Whether Seinfeld’s routine includes Jewish humor like that which he and PlayhouseSquare Larry David brought to the TV show – like making out during “Schindler’s List” or the dentist who made Jewish jokes only two days after converting – can be learned by heading to PlayhouseSquare for the show.

The roar returns to the North Coast shore as the Rock Hall brings back its popular – and free – concert series. Catch St. Lucia with Seafair on July 16; Reignwolf with Thaddeus Anna Greene on July 23; Har Mar Superstar with Nowhere on Aug. 13; and Diarrhea Planet with Herzog on Aug. 27. Attending any of the shows gives audiences a chance to support local music as Seafair, Thaddeus Anna Greene, Nowhere and Herzog are all Cleveland-based acts.

House that’s a

Home

Led by three 20-somethings, Moishe House is helping young Jewish Clevelanders forge bonds, find their place

O

n a dusky spring night in June, there’s constant motion inside Moishe House. Ben cleans up after returning home from a softball game before logging onto his computer, Mandy pours herself a glass of water as she starts to pack for a trip to Israel she’ll embark on days later, and after a long day at work, Josh sits down for a late dinner consisting of a sandwich, chips and hummus.

And yet for these 20-somethings, this is a relatively relaxed evening. Other nights, they’re hosting 20 to 30 people for Shabbat dinners at their namesake Cleveland Heights house, planning poker nights or other social activities the proceeds of which will benefit Jewish charities, or partnering with area synagogues or Jewish institutions for programs that build ties and strengthen bonds in the community. Of course between all of that, there’s still time for impromptu games of foosball – with house bragging rights on the line– and the exchange of lighthearted jabs at one another. “She’s the boss,” Josh says, rather businesslike, about Mandy. “We’ve had a running joke since Day 1 that Mandy is the ‘CEO of Moishe House.’” With her breezy smile, she counters, “It’s because they both moved out of their mothers’ homes. Now, they’re both essentially trained.” “Whatever she says, goes,” Josh concedes. It’s that familiar, comfortable, sharp-yetcozy family dynamic that’s at the core of Moishe House Cleveland’s early success. But this family is a different type of family – one providing millennials a sense of place and purpose in the Jewish community at a time in their lives when structure is often lacking and they’re susceptible to straying away.

Migrating to ‘The Moish’ Ben Sattin, 27, and Mandy DuBro and Josh Kramer, both 26, moved into Moishe House – a recently renovated 1924 Colonial on Idlewood Road affectionately nicknamed “The Moish” – in September 2013. It’s a three-story, four-bedroom affair with hardwood floors, a working fireplace and plenty of open space to move around chairs, couches and tables to accommodate large gatherings. That said, one room tends to be more popular than others. “Everyone congregates in the kitchen,” says DuBro, laughing, acknowledging that sometimes hampers her ability to prepare

jstylemagazine.com

and serve meals for guests. “But it’s where the food is, so I guess that’s where I’d be if I was coming over.” “Moishe House” doormats welcome visitors at the front porch and back deck, and Judaica – mezuzah, kiddush cups, Shabbat candles – and Cleveland-centric decorations help give the residence an identity. But it’s the residents who are Moishe House’s most interesting feature. Sattin and Kramer are native Northeast Ohioans. Sattin, an attorney, was born and raised in Cleveland Heights, his family members of Congregation Shaarey Tikvah. He earned an economics degree from Washington University in St. Louis before returning to Cleveland to earn a law degree from Case Western Reserve University. Between stints in higher education, he spent nine months volunteering in the Jewish community in Berlin. “When I was in law school, I was removed from the community by choice (due to studying),” Sattins says. “(Otherwise) I’d been active in a Jewish community in one way or another.” Kramer grew up in Shaker Heights and is a fifth-generation member of Park Synagogue. Now a government-relations consultant, he graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in political science and international affairs (and minored in Yiddish). When he lost his first post-grad state government job due to a political regime change, he landed a job with Army Continuing Education Services that sent him to Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan for seven months. “I blogged about my Jewish experiences while there,” he says, “and the Jewish experiences were some of the most interesting.” DuBro grew up in Dayton and graduated from Miami University in Oxford before moving to Cleveland to earn her master’s degree in social work from CWRU. She now works as an in-home child and family therapist. With no nearby family of her own,

Summer 2014 Jstyle 35

Moishe House

she felt she was fortunate to move in with a roommate who was already plugged into the community here. “I met so many people through her,” DuBro says. I’ve never had so many Jewish friends – just because wherever I lived, there weren’t that many Jews.” Sattin, Kramer and DuBro all were involved in Jewish life as teenagers and college students, and because that involvement carried over as young adults in Cleveland’s Jewish community, they became familiar – and friendly – with one another by way of attending a lot of the same events. When word spread that a Moishe House would be opened in Cleveland, the three applied to live there. Sattin and Kramer threw their hats in the ring first, along with a mutual friend who encouraged them to do so. When that friend dropped out of the process, DuBro stepped in. After a vetting process that spanned several months, the three were chosen to lead.

Open-door policy Since moving in, they’ve organized 60 events and entertained 959 guests – 302 of whom have been first-time guests. They’re averaging 17 attendees per program,

36 Jstyle

Summer 2014

and their largest single-event draw was 60 people. They’ve also partnered with other groups 39 percent of the time – a figure that signifies more collaboration than at most other houses, says Jason Boschan, Moishe House’s director of marketing and communications at the international level. There are 64 houses across 14 countries worldwide. “They’re doing great,” Boschan says of Cleveland. “From what I can tell from the programs I’ve seen and the results coming through from their efforts, they have a pretty solid dynamic working there in a short amount of time.” Erika Rudin-Luria, community development vice president for the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, which is a partner and local funder of Moishe House, says Sattin, DuBro and Kramer have done a “tremendous job of engaging their peers as well as partnering with Jewish institutions.” “There’s a great want for involvement and activity among young people in Cleveland, and Moishe House has tapped into that,” she says, adding that Federation’s backing stems from its desire to provide as many avenues as possible for engagement in the Jewish community.

“We recognize that different aspects of Jewish life are interesting to people at different points in their lives, and that different things appeal to different people,” she says, explaining that young people who aren’t yet married and don’t have kids are less likely to join membership institutions like synagogues. “We’re always looking for new ways to attract people to Jewish life.”

Comfort zone In the demographic himself, Kramer acknowledges the potential gap in structured Jewish involvement between childhood and starting a family. “It’s a bell curve from bar mitzvah to having kids. (Structured involvement) drops and comes back up,” he says. “It’s probably even more pronounced after college. Colleges have Hillel and Chabad, and they’re catering to you. After that, there’s nothing – unless you’re lucky enough to live in a place like Cleveland.” Federation’s Young Leadership Division and Cleveland Hillel’s JCLE help bridge that gap, as do synagogue-affiliated young professionals groups. Moishe House does the same by emphasizing peer-to-peer connections in a home-based community with programming that falls into one of four categories:

Jewish culture and holidays, Jewish learning, social, and community-based service. While Moishe House partners with other Jewish organizations, it’s ultimately free of institutional ties or hierarchy that might intimidate or alienate some 20-somethings. “The whole idea of taking a synagogue and becoming a member is a decision a lot of my peers aren’t ready to make right now,” Sattin says. And Moishe House gives those peers a home. “It’s important to me that our programs and the atmosphere of the house be very inclusive,” DuBro says. “While our personalities come through in our programming, people can feel comfortable attending regardless of background – and you can see that in the house. There are Jewish themes, but they’re not overwhelming. Whatever background you have, you should be able to feel at home here.” But it’s those personalities DuBro mentions – the chemistry among the three of them – that really gives Moishe House its inviting, homelike environment and its guests a sense of belonging. “We’re all very different, interests-wise, and the way we function in life is completely different,” she says, “but together, it’s a really good match.” js

Just Be Yourself? The most common piece of dating advice has to be, “Just be yourself.” It’s something we’ve all heard our friends say as we grab our coats and race out the door to meet a new man or woman. But does it work? What does being yourself really mean? Is there a true self we can choose to perform or conceal? Or do our personalities shift and transform depending on our environments? We change. The side of ourselves we reveal at Bubbe’s seder table is drastically different from the self we present at a concert with friends. Yet, both versions of ourselves are authentic. The question then becomes, “Which version of myself should I present on a first date to attract a match?” Now we’re getting closer. If the version of yourself who appears on first dates is nervous, sweaty, and stammering, then you need to rethink your presentation. Try channeling the way you feel around your closest friends to help you make a great first impression on a date. Think about how you feel in the company of your closest friends: self-assured, secure and relaxed. You don’t need to brag about

your accomplishments or prove your worth because they already know and love you. You can crack a joke, handle a silence, and interpret non-verbal cues seamlessly. Sharing this comfortable side of yourself is attractive to matches. “Well Elana,” you might be thinking, “It’s all fine and good to tell me to act confident and relaxed when I’m on a date, but my date is out of my league, and I’m intimidated and afraid of rejection.” OK, got it. You really like this person, and you want the date to go off without a hitch. Here’s a game plan for presenting your best self on dates: n Get in the mood. Pull on that one outfit that shows all your best features, listen to a song that energizes you, and call a friend who thinks the world of you. n Do your research. Learn about the venue where you are meeting in advance, so you know what to expect, where to park, what to order and how to get the best seats. n Come prepared. Have at least five interesting conversation topics

to avoid any awkward silences. n Enjoy yourself. If you’re having fun, there’s a high likelihood your date will have fun too. n Keep a healthy perspective. Remember, this is only a first date and it won’t determine the rest of your life. If you’re a match, you’ll have the luxury of time to fall in love and build a life together. If not, then you get to meet someone new! js

Beauty

Light Bites S ummertime in Cleveland means spending afternoons and evenings on restaurant patios with family, friends or a significant other – as well as hanging out by the pool in your bathing suit. How does a girl enjoy both without losing her beach body? Fortunately, many local menus offer healthy-yet-flavorful options. The next time you visit one of your favorite eateries, consider some of the following delicious – and light – choices.

Men are especially prone to feeling nature’s effects since their skin is often more susceptible to irritation or dryness. Looking F cool orget staying cool – guys want to look cool during the warm summer months. Few accessories help guys pull that off – from beaches to bars – as well as a fashionable pair of sunglasses. Classic frames like aviators and wayfarers are still popular, but this year, many popular styles are inspired by designs from the 1920s and ’30s. By adding subtle details, like unique designs or color blocking, guys can give their summer style a retro flair.

fter suffering through a long, brutal winter, Clevelanders are eager to get outside and enjoy the sunshine. As the temperature increases, the patios of some of Cleveland’s finest restaurants will be filled with guests sipping on cocktails, eating delectable dishes and celebrating the long-awaited summer. Besides providing an opportunity to dine outside, the warm months also present an exciting challenge for Cleveland-area chefs as they tweak their menus for summer dining. “In the summer, we take a much more simple, reverential look at dishes and ingredients,” says Chef Jonathon Sawyer, owner of The Greenhouse Tavern and Noodlecat in downtown Cleveland and the soon-to-open Trentina in University Circle. Rather than create seasonal menus, Sawyer says he likes to change a specific item every week or two. “That way, we’re always on the season and in the season,” he explains. “We like to see what we’re getting from the Red Basket Farm, Basketeria and all of our farmers, and then change our dishes accordingly.” Chef Douglas Katz tries to incorporate lighter options into his menu during the summer to better suit diners’ palates. “People tend to eat much lighter in the summer. As the temperature goes up, you may change to cold food, to sauces that aren’t quite as heavy or to dishes that are more ambient or room temperature,” says Katz, who is chef and proprietor of fire food and drink in Shaker Square and The Katz Club Diner in Cleveland Heights, and chefpartner at Provenance and Provenance Café at the Cleveland Museum of Art in University Circle. Ingredients play a key role in Katz’s dishes. He often meets with local farmers to find out which products are available that season and then uses the ingredients in specific dishes. A few of his summer staples include strawberries in June, blueberries, zucchini and yellow squash in July, corn, peaches and watermelon in August, and onions and apples in September. “We try to find something special and we normally go to specific farms and list on our menu where that food came

hen planning menus, whether at home or in restaurants, it’s really important to know where your food comes from and to start with the ingredient. It’s better to find the great ingredients available at that moment and then find a recipe that works with them than vice versa. – Chef Douglas Katz

from,” Katz says. “We try to pick sustainable fishes that we can use on the menu and local meats as well.” Sawyer also stressed the importance of ingredients and says he likes to use apples, wild chamomile, clover and garden greens in his summer dishes. He tends to avoid heavy dishes, like braises or roasts, during hot months. Fish is a popular summer item at The Greenhouse Tavern, Sawyer says, including one specific dish of pan-seared sable placed atop a combination of fresh, raw and slightly cooked beans and peas that are ground up with fresh mint and cilantro. Sawyer adds that one of his favorite summertime dishes at Noodlecat is the chilled soba noodle salad with wakame seaweed and Japanese flavorings. Noodlecat isn’t the only restaurant serving up soba noodles during the summer. Zippy Noodles, a June special at Johnny Mango World Café and Bar in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood, features soba noodles, scallions and toasted sesame seeds tossed in a homemade ginger and lemon dressing. “It’s a special people always look forward to and wait for in the summer. Customers always ask me, ‘Are the Zippy Noodles on the menu yet?’” says owner Shelley Underwood, adding the dish is also available at other times during the summer. Johnny Mango’s menu has been consistent for about the last 18 years, but each month Underwood and her team create a special menu item to feature. The specials largely depend on the meats and produce available that month at the West Side Market a few blocks from Johnny Mango. “We like to try something new every month,” Underwood says. “We usually choose customer favorites from years past.” Johnny Mango features salad specials in July and tacos in August, including the popular vegan tacos made with fresh zucchini, eggplant, mushrooms, green peppers, onion, lettuce, tomato and pepita salsa in hard corn tortillas. Crafting summer dishes isn’t exclusive to professional chefs. Katz encourages home cooks to experiment with ingredients when creating dishes this summer for family and friends. “When planning menus, whether at home or in restaurants, it’s really important to know where your food comes from and to start with the ingredients,” he explains. “It’s better to find the great ingredients available at that moment and then find a recipe that works with them than vice versa.” js

alk into Porco Lounge and Tiki Room and you’ll enter a cooler, darker world – an exotic escape from Cleveland’s summertime heat found along the Tremont-Ohio City border. You’ll naturally gravitate toward the bar, a cleverly laminated affair featuring swizzle sticks, mostly from Las Vegas, trapped in plastic. You look up to see an eclectic collection of alcoholic accessories, from rhubarb liqueur to amaros to truly exotic aperitifs. On the top row, toward the left, is a gaggle of parakeet mugs made for sipping (don’t rush) such custom drinks as the turquoise Mare Blu (the baseline blend is vodka and blue curacao) and the Planet of the Apes, a blond bomber based on rum. Other glasses abound, like the snifter that houses the Fogg Cutter, a tawny, opaque drink based on dark and light rums bartender Andy Avner dresses up with dry ice. Besides the rum, Avner says, there’s gin, brand and orgeat, an almond syrup frequently encountered in the Mai Tai, another island mainstay. You expect a miniature rock ‘n’ roll band to pop out of this drink, so strong it walks a fine line between the intoxicating and the anesthetic. Porco brings the hammer down even harder with Tiki Bob’s Concussion, a $25 drink available only one time an evening and not available after 10 p.m. It’s summertime and the living is tropical in Porco, a relative newcomer on West 25th Street, about a half-mile south of the West Side Market. It claims to be the first true Tiki bar in Cleveland since the fabled Kon Tiki in the old Sheraton hotel downtown closed in 1976. Avner says all Porco’s simple syrups, like the orgeat, are made in-house, in a nod to pre-Prohibition bartending tradition. The place is fun, blending kitsch and cool in a way that’s characteristically Cleveland – and slightly mysterious: All Avner will say about one of Porco’s newest drinks, the Planet of the Apes, is that it includes rums

jstylemagazine.com

and banana liqueur. Those plastic monkeys clambering around its neck hint at the refreshing, sunny pleasures to come. Across town, at the BottleHouse Brewery in Cleveland Heights, bartender Jason Kalligracas suggests the Americano, a milder precursor of the famous Negroni, as just the thing for the summertime. The Negroni includes gin, Campari and sweet vermouth; the Americano is a level lighter, swapping club soda for the gin. “You can make it by the pitcher,” he says, concocting the tall, burnished drink in a shaker. Legend has it that a Count Negroni, looking for a deeper buzz, told his bartender, who was making an Americano, to strengthen it. And so the gin-forward, bracing and slightly bitter Negroni was born. The Americano, however, is a handsomer quaff. At the BottleHouse, the Americano’s assembly starts with a premium sweet vermouth called Antica, then that neon-pink aperitif known as Campari, then a slice each of lemon and orange, and finally, the soda water. The astringent and the sweet blend beautifully in this light drink, Kalligracas says. He’s right. For something quite a bit stronger, try the Seventh Heaven, a variation on the Aviation featuring gin, maraschino liqueur (Luxardo works well), grapefruit juice and fresh mint. Like the Aviation, which adds violet liqueur (like St. Germain), it’s a milky-looking concoction best served in a cocktail glass. As Kalligracas says, the Seventh Heaven is a ginforward drink. You don’t really need the mint for flavor – but you do for the look. “Take a sprig over the glass and tear it” is the key to entering this particular variation of heaven, Kalligracas suggests. Whatever your summertime pleasure – don’t overlook tequila drinks or rum drinks – there’s a cocktail to match your mood. And pleasure your design sense. js

eople who dream of living in downtown Cleveland fantasize about having city life – dining, nightlife, theaters and sports – at their doorstep. A unique new development taking shape at the intersection of East Ninth Street and Euclid Avenue aims to take that one step further by offering some of those amenities – and more – within its stylish confines. jstylemagazine.com

Summer 2014 Jstyle 53

A 25th-floor Sky Suite at The 9 offers views of the Terminal Tower, Progressive Field and the rest of downtown Cleveland while its open living spaces complement classic and modern designs. Residents and visitors alike will have access to the exquisite Ameritrust rotunda, where a Heinen’s is scheduled to open in February.

Welcome to the makeover of the former Ameritrust complex: The 9, linking apartments, a hotel, a supermarket, and bars and restaurants at the heart of the city. Two of its key elements are The Tower at The 9, joining luxury rentals to a four-star hotel and all of its amenities, and The Rotunda at The 9, Heinen’s Fine Foods’ first downtown outpost. Stand in a 25th-floor Sky Suite in The 9 to catch a glimpse of the dream. Look through the deeply recessed window openings of the 28-story profile-defining tower designed by Marcel Breuer, a Swiss architect of Jewish descent, to see a Cleveland on the move again. A corner Sky Suite affords views of the Terminal Tower and Lake Erie shoreline to the west and Progressive Field to

54 Jstyle

the south. Retreat from the living room into one of the two bedrooms, lie down on the bed and bask in the openness of one sleek habitat. Dressed in colors earth and lighter, it effortlessly blends the organic and the high-tech. The big flat-screen TVs seem to float in a mirrored armature past the galley kitchen, outfitted with the latest energy-efficient equipment. A vase trumpeting a daffodil separates the two bathroom sinks. Functional and fashionable but not flashy, rooms feel more like public areas – their governing design principle openness in concert with privacy. The Sky Suites are posh, high-tech and ultramodern. The 9 synergizes its luxury apartments and a branded boutique hotel in a

building designed for what the developer, Streetsborobased Geis Properties, calls “concierge living.” Once the bustling project is fully operational – plans call for The 9 to open in September and for Heinen’s to open in February 2015 – residents (and overnight guests of the hotel) who so choose could embrace the development’s cushy cocoon effect. They could pick up a craft brew from Heinen’s, which will have the largest selection of such beers in Cleveland; eat in a hotel restaurant like Adega, an upscale eatery with what will be downtown’s largest patio at 2,000 square feet; burn off that meal at Energy Fitness, its state-ofthe-art gym; take a canine friend for a stroll in Bark Dog Park, the enclosed rooftop dog park; check out

a cinematic or theatrical offering at the 68-seat Alex Theater; and kick back at Azure, the 8,000-square-foot sun deck with a lounge and club. Ultimately, they could work their way into the Beaux-Arts building’s basement to close the evening with a cocktail at The Vault, a Prohibition-era speakeasy in – you guessed it – a large bank vault. It’s an ambitious venture. The project also extends east to the former Sweatland Building at 1010 Euclid Ave., to be called 1010 at The 9. There, both Geis and the Downtown Cleveland Alliance will maintain offices, and yet more apartments will be offered, though they’ll be far smaller than those in the tower. Between them, 1010 and the tower will house 194 apartments.

Together, the transformation of Breuer’s 1971 Modernist tower, the landmark 1905 rotunda and the Sweatland Building amount to a $170 million project. The new Cuyahoga County government headquarters Geis is building just south of the tower represents another $86 million. Worth noting is that the Breuer tower and the 33,000-square-foot rotunda, which prior to Ameritrust belonged to Cleveland Trust, have been closed for 20 years. The multimillion-dollar, mixeduse project should revive what used to be the city’s

financial center, says Joseph Marinucci, president and CEO of the Downtown Cleveland Alliance. Not only will The 9 offer a new level of residential living, bringing a grocery store downtown “has galvanized a lot of retail interest,” he says. The 194 Geis apartments under construction are part of 1,100 underway in downtown Cleveland, where apartment occupancy rate has ranked at at least 95 percent for the last twoand-a-half years, he says. All 1,100 should be open by the end of 2015. The 9 will stack its luxury

apartments on floors 14 to 28 of the tower. The top three floors are reserved for its 16 Sky Suites, distinctive units that run 1,867 to 3,004 square feet and rent, respectively, for $3,725 to $5,995 a month. The floors below The 9 apartments will house the Metropolitan, a 156-unit branded boutique hotel on floors four to 13. It aims to make the amenities accruing to Marriott Hotels and Resorts Autograph properties, like housekeeping, valet and concierge services, available to people who rent the apartments.

The hotel will offer 16 different room types, with enclosed glass-walled showers, zebra wood cabinets and large, flat-screen TVs. The floor plan is open, the units flowing. Though the hotel is sophisticated and stylish in its own right, visitors will get but a taste of what The 9’s more permanent residents will experience. The idea behind the complex is to create a toney platform for urban living. You can do everything you need within it, but it’s also a door opening to the greater world of downtown Cleveland. js

he look of your home will pop like a Sky Suite in The 9 if you outfit your place with furniture like this. While texture and materials vary widely, from the space age bed to the surreal-industrial coffee table to the faux fur pillow, these pieces have distinctiveness and timelessness in common. And they go together as if to your manor born.

HomeTech

Modern Living

S

martphones and tablets provide convenience and fingertip access to almost anything – and home technology is starting to follow suit. Home tech products – especially those that utilize mobile technology – are growing in popularity and offer users convenience, modernity, and in some cases, they provide a sense of security. “If you’re on vacation or away from home, with a home automation system you can check in on things, pull up some of the security cameras, check thermostats to make sure the furnace is working in the winter and the pipes aren’t freezing,” says Tony Fabrick, president and owner of Xtend Technologies in Broadview Heights. “It gives you peace of mind when you’re away that everything is all right at home.” – Kristen Mott

tNest Thermostat This next-generation thermostat programs itself to create an ideal home environment – and is arguably leading the way in home technology. “Nest is a smart home thermostat. It kind of learns your schedule and what you want to better control the temperature in your house,” Fabrick says. The thermostat can be controlled from a smartphone or tablet and has been shown to lower heating and cooling bills by up to 20 percent. The thermostat automatically changes the temperature in a house based on a user’s patterns. It also can detect when a house is empty and will adjust its heating and cooling settings accordingly.

tELAN g! Entertainment and Control System This product is a complete home automation system that lets users control everything from home entertainment systems, lighting, thermostats and security cameras. It even has the ability to lock or unlock doors remotely from the convenience of a mobile device. “It’s a full-on home automation system that gives people the ability to control anything they want right from their smartphones,” Fabrick says.

tSonos Controller App Recently launched, this app allows users to stream different music in each room of their house. “If you want to listen to iTunes music or cloud-based services like Pandora or Spotify, you can pull up the app on your smartphone or tablet and you have full control and access to all of that information,” Fabrick says. The app is compatible with the Sonos system of HiFi wireless speakers and audio components and gives music lovers the ability to adjust volume levels, manage their song queue and quickly search for music.
