What Is Trichology & How Can It Help Your Hair Loss Or Scalp Problem? Jeffrey Paul, of Jeffrey Paul Hair Restoration Center, is the first in the United States, and exclusive to Ohio, to introduce a breakthrough method that can fight major scalp conditions including hair loss.

L

et’s be honest, a scalp problem or hair loss, cannot be solved through the use of just a shampoo or a conditioner. However, Trichology, the study of the health of your hair and scalp, can help identify what is taking place on your scalp. Through a synergy of targeted products and a serious and complete protocol my team is now able to fight the major causes that affect our hair and scalp condition. These include: • Hair Loss Prevention Protocol – Fights hair loss, gives hair volume, strength and new life to miniaturized, thin and weak hair.

In order to do this my certified team works with a patented software program, TricoTest®, that is designed to sense and view, both hydration and oil levels in the skin and hair and establish the cause of hair and skin problems. After analyzing skins condition with the patented TricoTest® Software, we create a personalized trichological treatment program, based on the recommendation of the software, where products, technology, and expertise, work together with one goal in mind – to create healthier scalp and hair.

If you would like to learn more about the TricoTest® Scalp Analysis, Fights persistent dry dandruff, helping those with scalp irritations, or to schedule your free Trichological Analysis scalp tenderness, redness, and (valued at excessive itch. $125), during the month of • Sebum Regulating Protocol – Purifies the scalp and frees it from June and July, please call my excess oil production that could affect hair metabolism making hair team at (440) 333-8939. dirty, heavy, weak and thin.

dgewater Park has come a long way. No, I don’t mean since the times pictured in these two old postcards I recently came across in the basement of a Chardon antique store, though I suppose that’s true. After all, you don’t see many people wearing top hats and suits or long dresses – like almost everyone depicted in these postcards – to the beach these days. Instead, what I’m referring to is the renaissance the West Side lakefront park has undergone in just the past two years, following Cleveland Metroparks’ agreement to take over management of the City of Cleveland-owned site from the State of Ohio. First, a quick history: The city purchased the parkland from industrialist Jacob B. Perkins in 1894, according to “The Encyclopedia of Cleveland History.” Construction of the Cleveland Memorial Shoreway decades later led to the destruction of portions of the park, which had been a popular attraction for years, and by the 1960s, Edgewater had fallen into disrepair. Unable to keep up with park maintenance and facing dwindling resources, the city leased the park to the state in 1978,

8

Jstyle Summer 2015

where oversight remained until the 2013 Cleveland Metroparks agreement. While the state undoubtedly put into the park what resources it felt were appropriate, its efforts paled in comparison to the local leadership Cleveland Metroparks has recently provided. Today, the park is an urban gem – not unlike I imagine it was in its heyday all those years ago. Picnickers, swimmers, paddle boarders and sunset watchers all seem to have increased in number, as have amenities such as beach volleyball nets and the availability of benches. And to its credit, the state is playing a helpful role by way of ODOT projects in the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood that are improving and increasing access for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists alike. Last year, Cleveland Metroparks also introduced Edgewater LIVE, a weekly event held throughout the summer that featured live music, food trucks and, well, Lake Erie. By all accounts, Edgewater LIVE was a hit – and it’s returned this year (every Thursday evening through Aug. 13, weather permitting). New this year: Citizens Bank Cinema at Sunset, with movies screened outdoors at the park the second Sunday evening of the month through August. Next year: Construction of a 12,000-square-foot, two-story beach house. I’ve enjoyed an up-close look at all these changes because I live just a short walk away from the park’s upper level in Cleveland’s Edgewater neighborhood. I’m excited that Jstyle readers will get a similar look by way of our summer fashion shoot – and I’m hopeful it will inspire anyone who hasn’t been to the park recently to pay it a long overdue visit. After all, it’s come a long way.

Edgewater Park offers some of the best views in Northeast Ohio. Looking east from the park’s upper level, visitors can watch the sun or moon rise over the Cleveland skyline. Looking west from the 900-foot swimming beach on the lower level, part of 6,000 total feet of shoreline, visitors are treated to picturesque Lake Erie sunsets. Whether it’s the views, swimming, picnicking, boating or fishing, Edgewater Park offers summer fun of all kinds.

Mobile Summer Fun in the sun

While you don’t want to keep your nose buried in your smartphone or tablet all summer, you can use your mobile device to better navigate many of Northeast Ohio’s recreational and entertainment offerings. From museums and zoos to parks and libraries, several area institutions offer official apps to guide users and visitors. Find these apps in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

The sun is shining and the weather warm, so go outside and enjoy. The Summit Metro Parks app offers maps, details on birding “hot spots,” and descriptions of 40 trails. If spending time with wild animals is more your (or your children’s) cup of tea, both the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and Akron Zoo also have helpful mobile apps.

Staycations

Art life

Why leave the Buckeye State when there’s so much to explore here? The Cleveland Historical app provides details on tours and the backstories of many notable landmarks, while the Official Ohio Travel Guide app by TourismOhio provides you with plenty of information on every corner of the state to plan your next trip.

Do you want the Cleveland Orchestra’s summer schedule at your fingertips? Or how about that of the Beachland Ballroom? Want to explore the Cleveland Museum of Art in a more personalized manner (via ArtLens), or would you like a comprehensive resource for what’s going on in and around University Circle? All of these arbiters of art have apps that allow you to do these things and more.

Summer reading

Need a good book to take to the beach this summer or something to read during any layovers and long flights for summer vacation? Jews As mainstream acceptance of the LGBT community grows nationwide, snapshots from Northeast Ohio’s LGBT Jews suggest the same is happening in Greater Cleveland – with some room for improvement By Jonah L. Rosenblum Larry E. Highbaugh, Jr. for ThisisCleveland.com

Katy Fishman came out twice. The 26-year-old downtown Cleveland resident grew up in Shaker Heights – and The Temple-Tifereth Isræl in Beachwood. She had her first boyfriend six days into the sixth grade at Shaker Heights Middle School, and as teens and tweens sometimes do, she had several subsequent boyfriends. Then when she was 17, she had her first girlfriend. “I had never been in love before,” Fishman says over sandwiches at Corky & Lenny’s. “It was so different.” Her parents, she says, didn’t mind. Her mother’s reaction was simple if not slightly sarcastic: “I don’t care who you love, but don’t cut all your hair off.” After that relationship ended a little less than a year in, she ran into a “cute guy” at a bookstore: “Oh crap, I’m not a lesbian.” From straight to lesbian to bisexual, she says her family has always been right there beside her. “My family always has been hugely supportive,” says Fishman, a writer who recently completed a novel about a lesbian couple in suburban Ohio. “The rabbinate, as far as I know, has always been hugely supportive.” The book is to be released in November. Jake Green is camped out at his laptop at the corner table of the Starbucks at Cedar Center North. The South Euclid native and freshly minted Kent State marketing graduate proudly dons a black “Ohio Born and Raised” T-shirt. His parents responded similarly to Fishman’s when he came out. “They were totally accepting,” the 22-year-old says. “They’re very progressive people.”

jstylemagazine.com

In fact, his mother’s main question when Green announced his first significant other was a familiar refrain for any Jewish family: Is he Jewish? The answer was no. “At first, she wasn’t particularly happy about it, but at the end of the day, I’ll date whoever I’m comfortable with,” Green says. “I wouldn’t want to ever date someone that I couldn’t introduce to my parents. I want that relationship to exist.”

Tale of two cities That wasn’t Brynna Fish’s experience, but hers was 40 years ago. In the ’70s, being gay was something you didn’t mention. “Of course we didn’t talk about it,” the 58-year-old Cleveland Heights resident and longtime advocate says. “It was a big secret.” Fish knew she was lesbian in college – and her stepmom figured it out too. She told Fish she knew and that it was OK with her. There was a caveat. She was told not to tell her father, since the news would “kill him.” Fish describes that experience as a “lightning rod.” On one hand, someone in her family, her stepmom, knew and accepted her. On the other hand, not being able to tell her father hurt.

“There’s no ‘gayborhood’ in Cleveland, but there’s never been a time I’ve felt uncomfortable going out. It really is this pretty liberal mecca.” Jake Green

It was a double life. She had her girlfriends. She had her deep Jewish roots. She was the type of child who pleaded to have her own bat mitzvah, regardless of whether she got to have a party with it. “I had the Jewish and then I had the secret girlfriend,” Fish says. “It never occurred to me that there was a possibility for that to be whole.” It wasn’t just her. That year – 1978 – found Fish preparing a United Van Lines truck for her planned move to Boulder, Colo. with her girlfriend. Then, her girlfriend’s father found out about their relationship and threatened to “disown” his daughter if they didn’t break up. Their love – their dream life in Boulder – was dashed. That was when Fish’s stepmom told her it was time to tell her father. “My world was just shattered, and now I had to tell my father,” Fish says. She remembers the room. She remembers the two chairs and table lamp – the same place she sat as a kid when she got in trouble. This was where she told her father at long last that she was lesbian. As Fish recalls, he reached out and put his hand on her shoulder: “I don’t understand the way you are, but you’re my daughter and I love you anyway.”

Times change Are stories like Fish’s playing out today? It’s impossible to say what percentage of children today feel comfortable confiding in their parents. It’s also impossible to deny that the world has changed. Judaism has changed. “Cleveland itself and For example, Rabbi Stephen Weiss, a number of its inner- senior rabbi of the Conservative B’nai ring suburbs are a Jeshurun Congregation in Pepper Pike, announced in early June that he would great place to be LGBT. officiate same-sex weddings, and that Cuyahoga County is a same-sex couples would be recognized as tiny little blue dot in a family units, be invited to aliyot and have their anniversaries celebrated on the bimah. sea of red. … As fantastic Also, Rabbi Denise Eger recently was as Cleveland is for the installed as president of the Central LGBT population, Ohio is Conference of American Rabbis, the rabbinical arm of Reform Judaism. She’s the still a place you can be first openly gay president of the organization, fired for being gay.” replacing Rabbi Richard A. Block of The Katy Fishman Temple-Tifereth Israel in Beachwood.

46

Jstyle Summer 2015

The United States has changed too. Ten years ago, a single state allowed same-sex marriage. Today, 37 do, including heartland states like Indiana, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. And soon, perhaps, Ohio. The U.S. Supreme Court spent the spring deliberating on the constitutionality of Ohio’s constitutional amendment declaring marriage exclusive to a man and a woman. In the meantime, the people of Ohio have changed their tune. The same state that voted for that amendment – by a 62 percent margin – now favors samesex marriage by a 50-43 percent margin, according to a 2014 Quinnipiac poll. That includes 72 percent approval among those between the ages of 18 and 34. Ohio’s support for its LGBT citizenry took years to come out – but was never more evident than in the summer of 2014, when Gay Games 9 came to Northeast Ohio. It was a big deal. The previous eight hosts of the Gay Games read like a “who’s who” of classic LGBT cities: San Francisco, San Francisco again, Vancouver, New York, Amsterdam, Sydney, Chicago and Cologne, Germany. “Never before (had) a small Midwestern town hosted the Gay Games,” says Gregg Levine, a 57-year-old Pepper Pike resident who spent 33 years with BP and helped lead its marketing efforts at the 2012 Olympics before participating in the marketing of Gay Games 9. After the torch is passed, the Gay Games hands out a survey asking participants what they thought of the host city’s facilities, friendliness and (opening and closing) ceremonies. According to Levine, Cleveland ranked first in all three. The Jewish community joined in the celebration as well. In fact, the Jewish Federation of Cleveland served as a “bronze sponsor” of Gay Games 9 – and hosted the Israeli participants in the Games. “It was a real integration of our support for Israel, our support for the LGBT community and our support for the city of Cleveland,” says Amy Kaplan, assistant vice president of external affairs at the Jewish Federation of Cleveland. “The Jewish Federation of Cleveland and the Jewish community in general in Cleveland are very supportive of the LGBT community.”

Rabbis’ reasoning “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind; it is abomination.” Those words, or roughly those words depending on which version of the Old Testament you read, help explain why the LGBT community hasn’t always found itself at home in a synagogue (or church or mosque). The Temple-Tifereth Israel’s Rabbi Block notes, however, that Leviticus and the Old Testament contain a number of things that are “time-bound” and that the religion has “moved far beyond.” “One just has to see it as outmoded and in some ways a product of its own era,” Block says. B’nai Jeshurun’s Weiss went further, explaining in a letter to his congregation that “these two verses of Torah are not an expression of God’s will,” adding that “in my estimation, the prohibition of homosexuality is an example of a writer’s voice, not God’s.” He explains that, according to Conservative bible scholar Rabbi Robert Gordis, the Torah has “divine inspiration” but is occasionally subject to the biases of its writers. He also notes that Maimonides teaches that the Torah must take science into account. Given that science teaches that homosexuality is not a choice, Weiss writes that it doesn’t make sense that God would create homosexual human beings only to force them to live in pain and suffering. While the decision is remarkable, Weiss says the response has been overwhelmingly positive and that his congregation has always been accepting of LGBT congregants. Block notes that in his 2011 Yom Kippur sermon, he even saluted New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, and Republican state legislators for their work on passing same-sex marriage in the Empire State, calling them “profiles in courage.” Both Block and Weiss cite a significant LGBT presence in their congregations. “There’s no asking why they’re here. They’re just part of the congregation,” Block says of The Temple-Tifereth Israel. “It’s not just a safe place. It’s a welcoming place. It’s a nurturing place. It’s an accepting place.”

“There’s no asking why they’re here. They’re just part of the congregation. It’s not just a safe place. It’s a welcoming place. It’s a nurturing place. It’s an accepting place.” Rabbi Richard A. Block The Temple-Tifereth Israel

Nurturing and welcoming are key words. According to Weiss, it’s not enough to merely look past supposed transgressions. “It’s the difference between saying, ‘I love you as a person,’ and kind of the unspoken half of that is, ‘let’s not talk about what you’re doing, I just love you as a person,’ versus saying, ‘No, I really love you for everything you are and who you are,’” Weiss says. Weiss says he’s not alone. He says a majority of Conservative rabbis “accept and embrace” LGBT congregants. “It’s definitely a mainstream position,” Weiss says. “I don’t feel part of a small group or a fringe or that I’m a pioneer.”

Community speaks Levine got the message. “The rabbis in Cleveland have been extremely supportive,” Levine says. “There’s no way I could’ve spoken to any of my rabbis (growing up in University Heights). The students (now) feel welcome and they feel like they can talk to their rabbi or cantor.” Once upon a time, Levine says, Cleveland’s LGBT community needed its own home – and found it in Chevrei Tikva, now the LGBT arm (or chavurah) of Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple in Beachwood. Chevrei Tikva used to be its own synagogue with its own rabbi, drawing 200 to 300 people for the holidays. Fish estimates one-third were LGBT Jews, one-third were LGBT gentiles seeking spiritual connection and one-third were straight people seeking a progressive place of worship. “There was no synagogue that was welcoming LGBT people. None of the

synagogues had an open and affirming policy,” Levine says. “Today, there would be no need to start a Chevrei Tikva.” Fish recalls when Chevrei Tikva was first held at Fairmount Temple in 2005. Many LGBT members were afraid to enter. They were afraid of being targeted. “This was earth-shattering,” Fish says. “For some members, who were so closeted, it was like castration.” It’s different now. “I feel comfortable walking into any Reform or Conservative temple,” Fish says. Alan Hazzard, who teaches children at Suburban Temple-Kol Ami in Beachwood in addition to working in real estate at KeyBank, said the same of his Reform congregation. “Suburban has always been a very welcoming environment for LGBT families and congregants,” Hazzard says. “You just are or you just say this is my life. It’s not even a coming out as much as a statement of fact.” Green felt the same comfort at Kent State University’s Hillel chapter. He says that recently he has been considering the timeless question of which friends he will keep after he graduates from college, and came to the conclusion that most of the friends he will stay in contact with will be the ones he made at Hillel. “It has this very progressive energy,” Green says. “You can come and be whoever you are and talk about whatever you want, and that makes Hillel better.” When he returns to Park Synagogue, a Conservative synagogue in Pepper Pike, he’s confident he’ll receive the same warm welcome. “I know that I could go to Park and it would be totally fine,” Green says. “They’d be totally accepting. I honestly don’t think it’d be an issue.”

Blue dot, red sea Why would any LGBT person want to live in Cleveland – or in Ohio? To some extent, that was the assumption behind the popular TV show, “Glee,” which told the fictional tale of a show choir in Lima, Ohio, a city near the Indiana border. Throughout the show, heterosexual, homosexual and bisexual members

struggle with their identities – in conservative Ohio, of all places. That’s not the Cleveland Green and Fishman, both millennials, have come to know. Sure, Cleveland lacks the designated gay neighborhood of some of its American counterparts. New York has Chelsea, Chicago has Boystown and San Francisco has The Castro. What does Cleveland have? “There’s no ‘gayborhood’ in Cleveland, but there’s never been a time I’ve felt uncomfortable going out,” Green says. “It really is this pretty liberal mecca.” Much like Mecca, it is surrounded by desert, Fishman feels. “Cleveland itself and a number of its inner-ring suburbs are a great place to be LGBT,” Fishman says. “Cuyahoga County is a tiny little blue dot in a sea of red.” On the drive she used to make from Cleveland to Ohio University in Athens, on the other hand, “you probably didn’t want to tell anybody” about being gay, she says. “As fantastic as Cleveland is for the LGBT population, Ohio is still a place you can be fired for being gay,” Fishman says. That became an issue at a prior place of employment, some 25 minutes east of Cleveland, where she says a toxic work environment led her to keep quiet. “I found I was censoring myself,” Fishman says. Fish encountered a similar situation years ago as Midwest regional director of Central Region United Synagogue Youth. A couple of years in, during a Louisville shabbaton, Fish spoke up following the bullying of two LGBT Jewish children in Cincinnati. Rumors flew among the parents about her own sexuality. Not long after, she said she received a call from her boss. “What happened in Louisville?” “It was a teaching moment.” “Are you a lesbian?” “No.” That was a lie. Shortly thereafter, Fish says she lost her job. “I wasn’t bitter at Judaism,” Fish says. “I was brokenhearted, literally and spiritually.” Fish recently had the chance to talk with the rabbi who dismissed her. “I forgive you,” Fish recalls saying.

“It was a different time then,” she recalls him responding. “I know,” she said. Green adds that he feels a little uncomfortable with his car’s Human Rights Campaign sticker when he drives through towns that surround his alma mater. (HRC is a civil rights organization working to achieve equality for LGBT Americans.) Still, Green loves Cleveland – adores Cleveland – and couldn’t stop watching the Cavaliers chase the town’s first major sports title in 51 years. While current Ohio law bothers him – residents have no state governmental protection from being fired or evicted on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, as they do for race, age, religion and other factors – he still imagines himself in Cleveland. Like when Cavs superstar LeBron James went to Miami, Green is leaving for work (at a marketing firm in Chicago), but he expects that he too will come home. “I love Cleveland, its spirit, the promise of opportunity that exists here. It’s like nowhere else I’ve ever been or ever heard of,” Green says. “Cleveland’s a progressive city I couldn’t be prouder to call home.”

Hook a girl up Progress has been made, but we are not in the Promised Land yet, Fish says. She notes that Cleveland’s LGBT community is “relatively small” and adds that in a community that size, LGBT members may need help finding that special someone. She said that she longs for the day when a rabbi will help fix her up with someone – the same way a rabbi would a straight person.

“It’s the difference between saying, ‘I love you as a person,’ and kind of the unspoken half of that is ‘let’s not talk about what you’re doing, I just love you as a person,’ versus saying, ‘No, I really love you for everything you are and who you are.”

“It’s not enough to say ‘gay OK,’” Fish says. “You have to say, ‘What else can I do to make gay OK here?’” Fish worries whether children know that their synagogue will accept them. “How does a child in religious school know it’s OK to talk to their rabbi?” Fish says. “A flag isn’t enough.” Sermons like Block’s and statements like Weiss’ surely help. So does a changing national conversation outside of the synagogue. Hazzard notes a recent project in which he asked his students to engage in a contemporary social issue. They chose same-sex marriage on their own. Block adds that while synagogues have embraced the “L” and the “G” of LGBT, they may have work to do on the “T” – like many sectors of society. Caitlyn Jenner, who recently graced the cover of Vanity Fair as part of her public transition, has dramatized the contemporary struggle surrounding transsexuals – for the Jewish community and non-Jewish community alike. Editorials lauded her. The Tel Aviv gay pride parade invited her to participate. Others refuse to use the “she” pronoun. Finally, there’s the question of gay marriage in Ohio, potentially to be decided on by the U.S. Supreme Court in June. Regardless of the court’s ruling, the fight is not over, Fish says. She worries that the dizzying pace of change – like in the civil rights movement – will lead people to conclude that all is well far too early. As Cleveland saw in the wake of the Tamir Rice shooting and Michael Brelo trial, America’s struggle with race relations is far from over. There may well be parallels with America’s LGBT community. Levine, meanwhile, eagerly awaits the chance to marry his partner, Dr. Howard Epstein. “It will finally legally legitimize my 30-year relationship with Howard in my own home state,” he says. “I don’t want to live in New York or Chicago. I want to live in Cleveland, Ohio.” js

Jstyle Summer 2015

Looking for LGBT love Dear Elana, I am the mother of a gay son. When he came out to me and his father, we were supportive – and not surprised. He recently moved back home after college, and my concern is that he’s not going to meet a Jewish boyfriend here, and that he might start dating non-Jews, or else move to a larger city. Are there many gay, Jewish young professionals in Cleveland, and if so, where are they? - Looking For A Jewish Boyfriend For My Son Dear Looking, You sound like a loving and supportive mother. I can understand why your son felt comfortable sharing his identity with you, and why he chose to move home after college. I invited Ken Schneck, the Jewish producer and host of the podcast This Show Is So Gay, and a Clevelander (he’s taken, gentlemen!), to share his response to your question. There are many social venues for LGBT Clevelanders to connect, and there are also inclusive synagogues and Jewish networking opportunities, which I outline below. I understand your trepidation with your son’s possible choices: finding someone who isn’t Jewish or moving. But both of these choices are possibilities, and your best bet is to do what you’ve done well already: accept his path into adulthood. Your love and support brought him home once, and with any luck, he’ll keep coming home to celebrate Jewish holidays with a kind and caring man for years to come. Many local synagogues are LGBT-inclusive, and Chevrei Tikva is an LGBT chavurah that meets at Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple for shabbat services on the third Friday of each month. Cleveland’s annual Pride Parade, monthly happy hours, and other LGBT social events are places for your son to make friends, and possibly meet eligible Jewish singles. – Elana

Dear Looking, Let’s start with the plethora of good news: There are a ton of Jews in Cleveland, a ton of gay men in Cleveland, and there are a ton of single folks in Cleveland. The tsuris comes with the bad news: there are not a ton of gay, Jewish singles in Cleveland. A quick jaunt through JSwipe and JDate (online/app-based dating sites for Jewish singles) highlights extraordinarily appealing future bridegrooms. Unfortunately, your son would have to save up his gas money as the closest ones geographically are in Chicago. Yet not all hope is lost! New people move to Cleveland every day and the more connected your son is to the Jewish-related resources, the greater the chance he will be able to pounce on a newly relocated opportunity. I did just that in 2014 and had scheduled a date with a Jewish bachelor within (no joke!) 36 hours of his arrival in Cleveland, having been pre-alerted to his relocation by my matchmaker friends. But a Star-of-David necklace does not a great boyfriend make. I quickly realized that while my parents breathed a sigh of relief at my catch, his on-paper faith was simply not enough to sustain a relationship. Since then I have done heaps of soulsearching and even more heaps of dating. The incredible man upon whom I eventually stumbled is (gasp!) not Jewish. But he is a family-oriented, music-loving, social-justiceminded, community-service-dedicated, youthempowering, spiritually centered gem of a catch. He is respectful and encouraging of my Judaism, and the utmost in supportive of my faith journey. Although Jewish single gay men might be a limited population in Cleveland, single gay men who evince Jewish core values can be found all around the Rust Belt. And, trust me, men from that latter group are just as enjoyable in a hora as any of those gay Jews from Chicago. – Ken

FOOD BOMBA TACOS & RUM | GRIND BURGER

Savor the

CARIBBEAN FLAVORS Andy Himmel’s new BOMBA Tacos & Rum adds Latin spice to Greater Cleveland cuisine Story by Carlo Wolff | Photography by Michael C. Butz

ite into the braised beef taco at BOMBA Tacos & Rum to see why BOMBA creator Andy Himmel likes the dish so much. It’s a symphony of flavors, from the smoky beef to the fruity pickled jalapenos and the juicy pepper aioli that gives it slide and crunch. A pick-me-up of substance and style, it’s also hot, befitting the Latin-American cuisine it’s based on. It goes down easy, a slow burn its aftermath. That taco, a downsized version of the Braised Beef Ropa Vieja “large plate,” is one of 20 available at The Paladar Group’s first BOMBA Tacos & Rum, a “premium casual” restaurant on Detroit Avenue in Rocky River. Whether this BOMBA is the start of a new brand or simply an extension of Paladar Latin Kitchen & Rum Bar, The Paladar Group’s original outpost at Eton Chagrin Boulevard, remains to be seen. In any case, it’s a distillation of the swankier Paladar in menu, atmosphere and convenience. Judging from a visit to BOMBA, which feels seasoned though it’s only been open since mid-April, The Paladar Group has another hit on its hands. The outdoor patio was nicely populated one afternoon in late May, and inside, busy bartenders were pouring drinks, many based on the sophisticated array of rums that is a signature of Paladar Group restaurants.

54

Himmel, who is 34, was to the restaurant business born. His father, Marty, owned and operated The Boarding House, a long-gone restaurant in University Circle, and, after earning a degree in finance at The Ohio State University, he launched Boulevard Blue, a restaurant in Cleveland’s Larchmere neighborhood off Shaker Square in 2004. Three years later, he established Paladar, the Woodmere restaurant that serves as incubator for BOMBA. Boulevard Blue, which also was known as a jazz club, closed in 2009, shortly after Himmel turned his attention full time to Paladar. Now he’s training his sights on BOMBA. “It’s our first new concept in a long time,” says Himmel, who living in Orange with his wife and two young children feels deeply connected to Cleveland’s Jewish community. “It’s been energizing. Not that I was uninterested before, but this kind of adds a new dimension. We’ve learned a lot about the benefits of simplicity, not trying to be everything to anyone, and I think we’re bringing some of that back to Paladar, too.” Named after a heavily rhythmic style of Puerto Rican music and rum casks repurposed as drums, the 4,500-square-foot BOMBA is largely earth-toned, with exposed industrial ceilings, sturdy, low-key furniture and artfully deployed dark hues befitting the smoke at the heart of its cuisine. above the big, rectangular bar are the many varieties of rums Paladar Group eateries are known for. Why the focus on rum? “It really started as a differentiation point with the first concept, Paladar,” Himmel says. “A big part of our focus is Cuba and the Caribbean, both in terms of the cuisine and the culture, and certainly rum is the main spirit of that region. “Part of our brand is the thrill of discovery, introducing Latin flavors and rum to people who really haven’t been exposed to that. … We were excited about rum because it’s such a diverse spirit. For bourbon lovers and whiskey lovers, there are some great rums we transition them to.” One type of rum he’d like to be able to offer his guests is Cuban rum. Himmel says he’ll bring in the storied Havana Club label as soon as the U.S. embargo on Cuba is finally lifted. That can’t be too soon, he says, adding he’s never been to that off-limits island 90 miles south of Miami.

56

Jstyle Summer 2015

The BOMBA cuisine that pairs with the rum is based on exceptional, standalone restaurants Himmel and his crew have visited, like a small New York eatery serving a taco with a pineapple flavor. “It’s great to find places that do certain things really well,” he says. “In terms of inspiration for this cuisine, we went into Miami and New York, and got into some of the really, really great taco concepts that exist,” Himmel says. “A lot of them are single-unit, smaller ones that have unbelievable food. We spent a lot of time learning about those restaurants, took that and compared that to what’s been working well at Paladar.” Perhaps, he suggests, BOMBA is on the tip of a “better tacos movement,” similar to the “better burger movement” exemplified by, he says, B Spot and Flip Side restaurants. Like those, BOMBA is “premium casual,” aimed at customers who want some of the formality of a fullservice restaurant but also crave an atmosphere – and

cuisine – that feel instantly comfortable. “To us, it’s a concept,” he says. “It still has elements of full service, but it feels more like you’re dining at a bar table as opposed to sitting in a dining room.” Today’s adventurous diners “are looking for less commitment,” he says. At BOMBA, B Spot and Flip Side, “it’s first come, first serve, (at) an easy place to go any day of the week. It means different things to different people; I think people default to what they consider simple.” Himmel and his investors own six restaurants: the Paladar at Eton; three in suburban Washington, D.C.; one in Annapolis, Md.; one in Hallandale Beach, Fla.; and the BOMBA in Rocky River. A seventh Paladar is set to open in the Philadelphia area next spring. If the growth of the past eight years is an evolution, what Paladar has evolved to is tweaking, Himmel says. Fine-tuning and adapting are critical. Over the years, the group

has brought “unbelievably talented chefs and managers” onto its staff, which numbers about 500, including part-timers, Himmel says. These executives – there are eight to 10 managers at every Paladar restaurant – are world travelers who add “years of experience cooking this kind of food to our company,” he says. “It also forced us to get out to other markets, and taking everything together, it just added more depth and layers to what we were doing.” While refining the menu is critical to The Paladar Group, what really turns Himmel on is getting the business “to the next level.” “It takes us at least six months to figure out how to really operate, and get ourselves on stable footing,” he says. “None of our restaurants are identical. As a company, we’re constantly looking at what is the next step? Where does the menu go from here? How do we make our systems better? Every restaurant is constantly part of that process.” js

FOOD BOMBA TACOS & RUM | GRIND BURGER

Here’s the

Through Grind Burger, Michelle and Craig Ozan bring their quest for the perfect hamburger to Northeast Ohio Story by Jacqueline Mitchell Photography by Michael C. Butz

58

Jstyle Summer 2015

jstylemagazine.com

You’d

be hard-pressed to find a couple more passionate about burgers than Michelle and Craig Ozan. “We’re burger people,” says Michelle. “To us, the best burger is when juice is dripping down your arms. I want something where I barely need to chew. It’s more enjoyable than a fine steak.” The husband-and-wife duo own Grind Burger, a 6-month-old Highland Heights restaurant that uses locally sourced ingredients and a homegrown aesthetic. The Ozans recently moved to Northeast Ohio from Scottsdale, Ariz., not to break into the restaurant industry, but to raise their 2-year-old daughter, Aria, in the city where they both grew up, They also wanted to return to Craig’s childhood synagogue, The Temple Tifereth-Israel in Beachwood. “The Cleveland market is an up-and-coming market, so that was definitely something that was appealing to us, but we wanted to raise our daughter in Cleveland,” says Craig. “It’s such a good family city, so we wanted to bring her back here.” Craig and Michelle were both involved in the restaurant business in Scottsdale. Craig was a general manager of a boutique restaurant group, and Michelle was in sales and business development. Upon their return to Cleveland, they realized they wanted to open a burger restaurant reminiscent of their trendy, high-end favorites in cities like Los Angeles, Chicago and New York.

jstylemagazine.com

“When you think about opening up a restaurant, you’re planted there for a very long time,” Michelle says. “Where we felt most at home, where we felt like this concept would be really well received, was in Cleveland. There are a lot of other concepts like this everywhere. It takes a little while; it’s not the quick in-andout Five Guys or that sort of thing. We wanted to bring something that was a little more of an elevated experience.” The Ozans focused in on the East Side for their ideal demographic. “We had to find people who would appreciate quality,” says Michelle. “What we’re doing takes time. What we’re doing costs money. We don’t use weights or presses. We don’t pre-cook beef. When an order comes in is right when it’s made. It doesn’t hit the grill

Summer 2015 Jstyle 59

FOOD BOMBA TACOS & RUM | GRIND BURGER before that. So we needed to find people who would appreciate that and that would understand it’s not a whambam-thankyou-ma’am kind of burger place. People who appreciate the love we’re putting in, the time and the effort; that say, ‘OK, I can pay a couple extra dollars, because there’s no antibiotics, and there’s no trans fats.’ We’re doing it the right way.” The idea for Grind Burger evolved from the quest for the perfect burger. “We’ve always been on the hunt for the best burger, any time we go to a city, any time we want to go out to eat,” says Michelle. “And we would often struggle to find that. So we started on our own adventure. We bought a little grinder and we started grinding our own beef at home. Then we took things even further and started educating ourselves. Just through trial and error, we figured out the exact everything. It’s like a mathematical equation.” That equation includes the meat to fat ratio, temperature and sear, says Craig.

60

Jstyle Summer 2015

Included on the menu at Michelle and Craig Ozan’s Grind Burger are the BuildYour-Own Burger, which as pictured includes lettuce, tomato and onion rings; a side order of hand-cut house fries; and Cookies & Cream Milkshake.

They perfect their burgers by double-grinding beef in-house, for all to see. “Nobody else is grinding their own beef,” says Craig. “You see the freshness of it.” They have a butcher on staff. A display window and an open kitchen allow customers to watch each step of the burger’s journey from grinder to grill to plate. “The kitchen back there is all scratch,” says Michelle. “Our onions take seven hours to make; sauerkraut balls take two days to make. Those are actually all of my recipes. Everyone always asks, ‘Who’s the chef? Are you culinary trained?’ I’m not trained in any sort of standard school. I come from a line of chefs.” In addition to the burgers, the signature cocktails are all handcrafted, with scratch-made Bloody Mary mix, simple syrup, cucumber juice and sour mix. The Ozans also source all their ingredients locally. The beef is hormonefree, certified Angus Wagyu from Wooster farms. Cheeses come from the West Side Market, and On the Rise

in Cleveland Heights bakes buns daily. A portion of their produce grows before customers’ eyes in a live garden next to patio seating. The restaurant also features a lounge area, where a blown-up 8-by-10-foot photograph from an Elyria butcher shop in 1903 stretches across an entire wall and chandeliers made from upturned wine glasses hang from the ceiling. Every Friday and Saturday night, guests can sip drinks and listen to music performed by local acoustic singersongwriters. The Ozans say the taste of their burgers is what sets them apart from the others. The burgers are cooked on a flat top at a high temperature, so when the burger hits the grill, all of the flavors and juices are locked in, living up to Grind Burger’s slogan, “Perfection is messy.” “It’s a different texture; it’s a different mouth feel,” says Michelle. “It is incredibly juicy but without the greasy. The perfect burger is messy.” “We’re happy to give you as many napkins as you need,” adds Craig. js

Modern FLOW Clifton Pointe in Lakewood offers contemporary, eco-friendly living along the Rocky River

Story by Carlo Wolff | Photography by Michael C. Butz 62

Jstyle Summer 2015

jstylemagazine.com

M

arci and Brian Alegant have lived in the Cleveland area for 19 years and clearly like it here. But they are native Philadelphians who missed the feeling of East Coast living, and after 18 years in bucolic Oberlin, where Brian is a professor and director of the music theory division at Oberlin Conservatory, it was time to find just that. Besides, they wanted a home that required less maintenance on a site they could manage – a site to revel in, too, and one with unique views.

The Alegants and their dog, Kip, found just the spot in Lakewood, where the western border of that West Side suburb meets the Rocky River’s east bank. Since December, they’ve occupied one of the 22 Clifton Pointe Luxury Ecohomes, part of Andrew Brickman’s second project in that area. (Eleven River Luxury Townhomes in Rocky River, his first, is on the west bank of that same picturesque waterway.) Let’s take a seat at the marble table on the second floor of the brand-new, three-story Alegant home. Developed by Brickhaus Partners, Brickman’s sustainable, luxury firm, the Alegant residence, like its neighbors on their narrow street, is tall and narrow, modular and modern. That style is a hallmark of Brickhaus

jstylemagazine.com

developments, including ones soon to come in Cleveland’s Edgewater neighborhood and in Beachwood. Let’s walk, and climb, the Alegant abode floor by floor. On the first is Brian’s office, where there’s an upright piano, a desk and a computer. There’s also a space the size of a vanity room where he roasts his own, very good coffee. Consider this floor the house’s launch pad. The second – which to many acts like a first floor – is the heart, a combination living room, dining room and kitchen ideal for sociability. The design is open, the space filled with light and window-rich. It’s airy, its colors soft, its ambience flowing.

On the third floor you’ll find the master bedroom and master bathroom, along with a guest room that doubles as a yoga retreat. The colors are darker here, perhaps more soothing. They are full of textural play, from area rugs spanning the abstract and the Persian, furniture ranging from ’50s modern to the occasional more traditional. Atop it all is a rooftop deck, which rises above other homes in the neighborhood.

64

Jstyle Summer 2015

Mirrors matter in this house. The master bedroom, like the living room, features them prominently. In the bathroom, they’re anchored to ceiling and countertop. In the living room/dining room, two mirrors 8 feet tall and about half that width lean against the wall and give the space an unusual feeling of depth, along with a kind of virtual company. An unusually resonant design element, they act as a

reflecting pool echoing the Rocky River that runs past the development. And if, with its 10-foot ceilings, the Alegant abode is very different from its much older near-neighbors between Sloane Avenue and Clifton Boulevard, it’s also anything but jarring. Overlooking Rocky River but not quite on the water, it, like Brickman’s other developments, seems to its environment born. The Alegants, who are

nonobservant, secular Jews, are an artistic couple, so an artistic house is in order. And when it’s this sustainable – Brickhaus uses ClearSpan construction, meaning the only load-bearing walls are the exterior ones, and installs energy-efficient, centralized technology – so much the better. Homes in Clifton Pointe cost $550,000 to $850,000. They came with 10-year, 100-percent tax abatements.

jstylemagazine.com

Getting to Clifton Pointe Marci tells the story, Brian fills in the holes. This is the second home they helped design, she says. Their first, in Oberlin, was “in a very sweet college town surrounded by soybean fields and corn fields,” but they wanted something more urban. Brian required a place within reach of Oberlin, and Marci, as director of fine arts for the I CAN charter schools

jstylemagazine.com

network, needed a locale convenient to Cleveland, Akron and Canton. The west end of Lakewood was the perfect compromise. In designing their home, they conceptualized doors with custom grooving and – in a stroke of utilitarian and aesthetic genius – selected floors of handscraped white oak. Call those pre-distressed; Kip, predominantly a Labrador retriever, can’t hurt them. And those floors look natural, not chemically weathered. No carpeting for this home, despite the occasional area rug. The walls bear modern art. There are choice books. There are plants. Inside and outside coexist gracefully. The kitchen, chef Brian’s domain (she picked the materials, he the appliances), is sleek yet warm; a “killer pantry” just off it is Brian’s beer brewing station.

All is in its very elegant, very functional, highly curated and very natural place. “This is exactly the aesthetic we wanted,” Marci says. Two years ago, the couple began to chafe at the maintenance their Oberlin home demanded. Marci happened upon information about Eleven River online, connected with Brickman, saw an Eleven River residence as well as one at 27 Coltman, Brickman’s development in Cleveland’s Little Italy neighborhood, and became more than intrigued. But they needed just the right locale. Eleven River was close, but it troubled Marci. “Eleven River is on the water, which made me nervous,” she says. “Being near the water, you feel you can weather the storms more easily.”

Enter Clifton Pointe. At about that same time, Clifton Pointe had a unit available, but the Alegants weren’t quite ready. But soon, a site, occupied at the time by a gift shop that sold Irish wares, came on the market one street over. A second phase of Clifton Pointe was built, and the couple went for it. Things moved rapidly after they committed to buying the house in March 2014. That weary Irish cottage was razed, they sold their home in Oberlin before it even went on the market, and they worked with Brickhaus architects and designers to make their home very much their own. “It was amazing to watch it go from nothing to my dream house,” says Marci, suggesting the only thing left for her to do is decorate the rooftop deck. “That’s what it did.” js

Kitchens are largely about function, but stylish form shouldn’t be overlooked – and can be easily achieved By Kristen Mott

T

he kitchen is one of the most important rooms in a house. Not only is it a space to prepare delicious meals, it also serves as an area in which to entertain friends and relatives. Create a modern and functional kitchen with a few simple upgrades recommended by Nikki Trivisonno of Somrak Kitchens in Bedford Heights, Rick Ritt of Snow Bros. Appliance in Lyndhurst, and Marc Blumenthal of B&B Appliance in Euclid and Middleburg Heights. Before updating your kitchen, it’s important to decide on a budget and which aspects of the kitchen you want to focus on. “For some people, replacing their countertops and cabinets will make all the difference in the world and will make dreary appliances look new again,” Trivisonno says. “For other people, just changing out cabinet handles or adding a new backsplash can make an impact.”

DÉCOR CLIFTON POINTE | GET THE LOOK | ROOM SERVICE Stainless steel appliances remain the most popular option, Blumenthal says. “A majority of appliances are available in stainless steel,” he says. “For something slightly different, General Electric has a color called Slate and KitchenAid just came out with a new color called black stainless steel.” Gray is a popular color for countertops and cabinets, Trivisonno says, because it’s neutral and complements stainless steel appliances. She added that homeowners also are incorporating a splash of color into their kitchens, whether it’s a decorative backsplash or a piece of art. Ritt says one of the biggest changes he has seen in kitchen design is over-therange microwaves going by the wayside. “People are placing their microwaves in the kitchen island, like on a microwave drawer. The microwave actually slides out instead of having a normal microwave above the stove,” he says. As for trends, Trivisonno says more people are opting for quartz countertops rather than traditional granite, since quartz is scratch- and heatresistant, nonporous and generally less expensive than granite. She also works with many clients who request clean lines, whether they’re incorporated through cabinet handles or sleek design accents. “Less is more,” she says. “Cleveland isn’t a contemporary market for the most part, but we are seeing a transitional style being more popular than the typical ornate traditional style.” js

Suntrol Glass Enhancing Films 216.663.0801 • suntrol.com

F

or more than 40 years, Suntrol has been leading the way in glass enhancing films. By simply adding a window film to already existing windows, Suntrol has helped customers save up to one-third on their yearly energy bills. During Northeast Ohio’s cold winters, window film acts like an additional layer of insulation, keeping the warm air in. On those hot summer days, the same window film keeps the cool air in and the hot air out! The product not only helps save the customer money, but also helps them remain healthy. Although natural sunlight is beautiful, it can be the cause of many different health problems, including skin cancer. By simply adding a film to the window, 99.9 percent of harmful UV rays get reflected while still allowing the natural light into the home.

78 Jstyle

Summer 2015

Suntrol is able to do this by using a breakthrough technology called Selective Sun Control. It allows the good light in and keeps the harmful rays out. Not only do these rays cause harm to the human body, but they also take a toll on the interior of many houses and businesses. These unprotected windows allow the bad rays to reach the interior and cause major fading and heat damage. Suntrol’s window films keep the inside of houses looking new and safe! With more than 100 years of combined expertise, it’s no surprise that Suntrol’s staff have been the recipients of more than 40 awards and honors, including the most recent appearance on 2014 Angie’s List Super Service Award. They are also recommended by The Skin Cancer Foundation as well as many other recognized groups. Don’t replace your windows – Suntrol them! jstylemagazine.com

What are your favorite things to do during summer in Cleveland?

Going out downtown to East Fourth Street and West Sixth Street, and going to Indians games.” – Amanda Goldie

I love going out to Ohio City and Tremont. I like to go to events, and I golf a lot (at Shawnee Hills Golf Course in Bedford and Punderson State Park Golf Course in Newbury Township).” Play baseball, go to concerts and events, going to Indians games and visiting pools wherever I can find them. I usually grill out, play cornhole, play Frisbee, and at some point, catch a ride on a boat.” – Aaron Krieger

– Dustin Kaplan

Indians games are probably one of my favorite things to do in the summer. … I like how upbeat downtown Cleveland has gotten.” – Abby Grossman
